Welcome Welcome to your autumn season access brochure, including world-class musicals, ballet, comedy, new family shows and much more. We’ve had a busy summer season and have attended lots of fantastic events such as DeafFest, Deaf Expo and Birmingham Disability Festival, all were incredibly informative and inspiring. At the Hippodrome, we ran a brilliant drop-in session during Deaf Awareness Week. The valuable contribution from everyone who attended helped us create an action plan to better support our D/deaf customers, thank you again if you supported this event. Our SEN Youth Theatre had their debut performance in our Patrick Studio in spring with 15 young people taking part in a professional production of Over the Waves, which was a devised performance created by the cast. We were delighted to welcome 20 young people from SEN schools and colleges for our SEN Work Experience week. The group learnt about the many jobs in theatre and had a brilliant week with our teams. Furthering our skills development work, our Access and Inclusion Advocates will be taking part in job shadowing later this year. While our Advocates will have a chance to learn more about our work, they will also support our colleagues in exploring how we can continue to be more accessible and support employees with access needs. On our main stage, we are looking forward to Relaxed performances of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker and our spectacular pantomime Sleeping Beauty. We will be hosting an access social drop in after Sleeping Beauty. In the Patrick Studio, we are thrilled to be hosting two Relaxed performances of One Tiny Penguin, the next in our My First Musical series. You can find all accessible performances in this brochure, which is also available on our website in audio form, and in large print and braille at our Access Assistance Point at the Hippodrome. To find out more, visit our website or speak to a member of our team. If you would prefer to book your tickets over the phone, you can continue to do so by calling the Hippodrome’s dedicated Access Line on 0121 689 1060. We look forward to welcoming you to the Hippodrome soon.

Charlotte Boyer, Access Lead and Vidar Hjardeng, MBE. Board Access Champion Front Cover: Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Sylvia and CATS.

Accessible Performances Audio Described Performances We offer Auri headsets that give access to show relay and audio description. We have a limited number of headsets so please reserve yours when booking tickets to ensure you get one on the day. You are also welcome to connect using your own device if it is Bluetooth compatible and has Auracast installed.

“I’m really enjoying using Auri at the Hippodrome. We can now have audio wherever we are sitting which makes it much easier to be wherever our friends are. The sound quality is great and there are future ready features which I look forward to using as they roll out.” Paul Hopkins, Access & Inclusion Advocate

BSL Interpreted Performances Productions are interpreted in British Sign Language (BSL), the most common form of sign language used in the UK. We will always try to make sure you are in view of the interpreter on stage.

Captioned Performances Similar to television subtitling, watch the script unfold on a display board at the same time as lines are sung and spoken. We will allocate you seats suitable for seeing the captions.

T

Touch Tours For Audio Described performances, we usually offer a Touch Tour before the show. It’s a chance to familiarise yourself with the set, props and costumes beforehand. Depending on the production, we can’t always guarantee stage access. Times for Touch Tours are confirmed 2-3 weeks in advance and must be booked before the day.

Relaxed Performances Our Relaxed Performances are open to all, but created for people with specific needs who may find the theatre challenging. This includes people who identify as neurodiverse; have a learning, sensory, communication or mobility need; or those who need to access our BSL, Captioning or Audio Described provision. We encourage and create an atmosphere where everyone feels safe and able to react to a show as they wish. We sell fewer seats, which means more room for wheelchairs and more space and comfort. Auditorium doors remain open throughout the performance to enable attendees freedom of movement. Certain aspects of staging are also adapted to suit the audience. The script may be simpler, bright lights and loud noises reduced, and house lights raised so the auditorium is not completely dark. We also have calm spaces on every foyer level for our Main House Relaxed Performances and use our conference spaces for our Patrick Studio Relaxed Performances. A Relaxed Performance pack is provided in the pre-visit email and also available on site for those wanting further assistance with the narrative. For further information, please contact hippodromeaccess@birminghamhippodrome.com

Meet our Access & Inclusion Advocates Read all about Bengy’s experience as an advocate and the difference being part of the Hippodrome has made to his life. What’s your background? Backgrounds are hard to differentiate when you have come from a low income family to being homeless because of ill health. Through losing my mum I felt lost and had no direction, I knew I was capable of changing, but barriers are unfortunately put up for families that do not have much disposable income. However, I found a different home when I reached Birmingham Hippodrome as an Access & Inclusion Advocate; they never put up barriers or made me feel unwanted, even with my learning difficulties. They embraced my love for theatre and I couldn’t have gained that kind of strength and being able to make great changes in my life and in the lives of others without them.

What does it mean to be an A & I Advocate? Being an advocate means reaching people who would otherwise feel rejected at the door because of either cultural differences, low income and disabilities. However, bringing people into the Hippodrome has given me a new lease of life. I now thrive under pressure, because I’ve become stronger at going for other interviews. I feel that I have a home and it's given me the confidence to apply for other roles as well, which I wouldn’t have done if it wasn’t for the A & I Advocates programme.

What is your most memorable theatre going experience? In December 2025, we saw the ballet ‘The Nutcracker’ for the very first time, which was my also first ever experience of seeing it live as an accessible performance. As somebody who did ballet as a child, I never felt included, but just seeing the whole staging and sitting with the group and my partner was my best Christmas ever. Describe accessibility at the Hippodrome in three words. - Kind - Powerful - Inclusive

Our Facilities Access Assistance Point Located inside the entrance near the main doors, dedicated and specially trained team members are ready to welcome guests and can provide any advice or assistance required. There are resources and equipment available to borrow from this desk, such as hearing assistance headsets, audio description headsets (available for AD performances only), noise cancelling headphones, fidget toys, light reducing glasses, and pre-booked wheelchairs. There are scribble pads for staff to communicate with guests if required. Our staff can also issue Access Lanyards that highlight to our staff that the guest has additional access needs for which they may need assistance during their visit.

Assistance Dogs Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the theatre, including inside the auditorium. If you prefer, our staff can also look after your dog during performances. Please book your dog in with Ticket Sales in advance of your visit. Our team will also try and make sure you are assigned the most appropriate seat, for instance next to an exit.

BSL interpreters on demand Convo offers access to BSL interpreters through a QR code – anytime and anywhere. Scan the QR code on posters around the venue to access this service.

Hearing Assisted Facilities If you’d like a receiver for our infrared amplification system, just ask at our Access Assistance Point. Please note that these can be used in the auditorium or Patrick Studio for a show only and are not available to use in the Front of House areas.

8

Wheelchair and Mobility Facilities Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Studio. Please book these spaces in advance. Transfer seats can be booked online when selecting seats or via the access line on 0121 689 1060. These are specially designed chairs that allow audiences who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters to transfer from the wheelchair or mobility scooter to the theatre seat, and vice versa. We have accessible gender neutral and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service.

Box Office Counter To enter the building every visitor needs to present a valid ticket. Please ensure tickets are distributed among your party to avoid any confusion at the doors. If you don't have your tickets or have any queries, please head to the Box Office Counter at our Thorp Street entrance rather than the main front doors. Thank you.

Car Parking and Train Travel The closest and most accessible car park for wheelchair users and patrons with impaired mobility is the Arcadian Centre Car Park. This has bays with easy access to street level and is about 150 yards to our entrance. Another nearby car park is the Gallan Car Park. This is directly opposite our Thorp Street entrance. Please note, both car parks can become very busy and full at times. Limited on-street disabled parking is also available on Hurst Street and Thorp Street. We recommend dropping off at Inge Street. New Street Station is 0.4 km/0.3 miles from the Hippodrome and Moor Street Station is 0.6 km/0.4 miles.

Be Part of the Conversation Birmingham Hippodrome is on a mission to make theatre accessible to all. From BSL, audio described, captioned and relaxed performances to touch tours and beyond, our Creative Partnerships team strives to create opportunities for all communities to experience world-class theatre. Our free Access Social Drop-Ins are one of the ways you can discover more, and lend your voice to the conversation...

A WARM WELCOME As Access Lead Charlotte Boyer explains, Drop-Ins welcome “anyone who wants to find out more about our access and inclusion work, give feedback and meet members of the team.” Taking place after select performances (see our website for more details), attendees can connect over cake and a cuppa, share experiences, and offer ideas on how we can improve accessibility and inclusion in our venue. The Drop-Ins were designed in response to our Access and Inclusion Advocates, a group of individuals - many of whom have lived experience of disability - who meet monthly to discuss how to further break down barriers to access. “The Advocates use their own lived experiences to inform and inspire us to make our access offer the best it can be. Off the back of that, we wanted to create an informal space for more people to drop in and share their thoughts” says Charlotte.

TALK OF THE TOWN Advocates Sophie Jackson and Paul Hopkins regularly attend Drop-Ins, where they welcome guests and help them feel comfortable in the space. Paul enjoys how the Drop-Ins generate “informal but knowledgeable conversations,” stressing how important it is that access is

10

valued, not treated as an afterthought. “I was impressed when I saw that the latest Drop-in was on Hippodrome’s main events calendar, front and centre of theatre activities” says Paul. For Sophie, the Drop-Ins create a genuine two-way conversation between attendees and Birmingham Hippodrome: “The relaxed setting of the Drop-Ins helps remove barriers that can “Attendees aren’t just providing feedback” she explains, “they’re part of an ongoing dialogue about shaping the venue to better meet diverse needs.” “We couldn’t do what we do without the insight from our Advocates and all the people we meet at Drop-Ins”, echoes Charlotte. “Ultimately, it’s their voices that help us to improve, to discover new technologies and ways to work.”

ACCESS MATTERS “There are still so many people who don’t think that theatre is accessible for them”, says Charlotte, “it’s vital we let them know that Birmingham Hippodrome is open to everyone, at whatever level they feel comfortable. They can attend a show, come to a Drop-in, or join in an Artist or Young People’s programme. Our Drop-Ins are another way of saying: if there’s any way we can support you, we’re here, we’re listening.” Sophie’s passion for discussing access was motivated by her own experience of disability:

“Before becoming unwell, I attended the theatre regularly and felt completely at home. When I began navigating a new dynamic disability as a wheelchair user with a medical alert assistance dog, attending theatre suddenly felt overwhelming. It highlighted how out of reach cultural spaces can feel when access isn’t considered.”

Charlotte

“Talking openly about access felt like a way to bridge that gap. Theatre should be a place of connection and creativity for everyone.”

A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS

Sophie & Tashi

The Drop-Ins provide a space to get together and socialise, which was hugely important to Sophie: “By bringing together like-minded individuals, Drop-Ins encourage connection as well as consultation. People can learn from each other, validate shared experiences and build confidence in speaking up.” Charlotte hopes that these connections have a lasting impact, helping to encourage more people to confidently access the magic of live theatre.

Paul & Pyrgo

“It's been great to see the journey of people that have come to the Drop-Ins” says Charlotte. “We had one attendee who was struggling to find her place and figure out her own access needs within the arts. We mentioned the Relaxed Performances at Birmingham Hippodrome, which she’d not heard of before, and she joined us for The Nutcracker in its Relaxed format. That chat, that moment of connection, meant she could say to herself: This is me. I’ve found my place within theatre.” “Hippodrome Access has given me the confidence to come to theatre”, says Paul, “I want to share that confidence building journey with as many people as possible, so they can feel just as inspired.” Want to join us for our next Social-Drop In?
