The 1942 Washington Group will probably bo the lcat from Baldwin to visit the nation's Capital UI1til the war ls over. For the many yeans alnce ii WOii instituted al Baldwin. 11tudoota who have gone on the Washing1on Trip have considered ii the highlight of their high school cmoers.

Certainly the ninety students who boarded the specially Ughted Washington-bound train in Union Central 11tatio11 April 2 wore thrilled· and e xcited at the proepects of the trip.

Despite the War and the crowded conhaion ln Waahlngtoa, the only features eliminated from this year's trip were the visit to Annapolin and the tour th.r ough the Bureau of Printing ond

Slight, elusive Paul Robert Kelley captained the MarOOllJ$ of '41. His fighting apirit and auperb athletic ability accounted for many a vidory.

Bullet Bob Carnahan waa the ramming fullback of the Maples. A junior, Bob is expecied to pick up more speed and pounds for next season.

Gaining a taclde p<»iti~ on the third team of the official all-state selections, Norman Porter proved the outlltand.ing tackle of last year'a equad.

The part of a manager is always an important and hard one. That was the job of senior Gene Hadjisky last season. Gene did his job well and efficiently.

The last of a brother combination, Jo Armstrong is one of those boys whose game come11 before bodily safety. To was an outstanding player with worlds ol football prowess cmd judgment. Due to an injury, he was forced to miss part of the season.

Big Al Jones, the strong man of the team, proved himaell many times, to his opponenlB' chagrin. Al was a vicioUBly charging tackle whose bite more than equaled his bark.

The new lights at Pierce Field were fittingly d edicated by a 45 to O victory over Cranbrook. A capacity crowd of 4000 fans watched Birmingham g o on a scoring jamboree with Bill Spiege l, Hank Dahlquist, and Bill Golling scoring two touchdowns apiece. Fullback Bob Carnahan added another marker to make the d efeat the w orst in years for the Cranes.

Jo Armstrong revived the onci&nt "quarter• back sneak" for one tally and then bucked the line for a nother. The grinding line play of Al Jones and Norm Porter helped pave the way for both scores.

On the tail end of a: 19 to 13 half-lime score. Baldwin came back magnificently in the second haU to nose out Dearbom 21 to 19 in the next encounter at Pierce. The magic boot of Paul Kelley provided the three points olte1 touchdowns that saved the game for the local lads. Bill Spiegel provided fans with a view of several sensational off-tackle runs.

The first blot on an otherwise spotless Maple record came when Femdale's cleanplaying Rail.splitters invaciad home territory and held the Birmingham running attack to a scoreless tie. Several times cm alert Maple line stopped Femdale's drives doep in pay dirt. Statistics proved that Ferndale out-qainetl the local lads in one of the most exciting encounters of the year.

Birmingham trimmed Ecorse 40 to 19 with Bob Carnahan running the ball back 95 yards on a kick-off to score. Gaining the lead on two touchdowns early in the first frame, the Mopies added score alter score in a light roin.

The next game was the T. V. A. A. championship battle with Plymouth. Bogged down in mud, hampered by illness and injuries. and facing a power attack composed mainly of 220-pound Jack Baker and Seguin, the Moples surrendered unwillingly. Paul Kelley sparked the Leafs through four soggy quarters. The Maples' victory march was stalled, however, and the Twin Valley Crown was divided among Plymouth, Birmingham, and Dearborn.

The saddest day of the year was Wider a bleak and wintry sky in the annual. Turkey Day classic at Royal Oak. The finest Acom team in yeam mauled and manhandled a badly bruised Maroon squad for four quarters 'as the Oaks rolled up a 27 to O score.

The defeat was a heart-breaker for a Maple team that was much better than it appeared to be in that game. But 1942 will be another year!

His outstand ing ability to click in a tight spot served rum well when he made the free throw that won the Henry Ford game. Forward Bob Murray possessed more spark for his size than any two other boys on the squad. Fiery and fast, he will be one of the main factors in the success of any Maroon squad next year. A jwtlor. he has acquired one letter and an all-A average .

Ted Corson, guard, was equally fine on offensiv e and defensiv e play. His graduat ion in mid-sea son was a heavy blow to Leaf tournam ent hopes.

Paul Kelley three years, Paul Kelley tied for the Johnson Memori al Plaque for achieve ment in athletics and scholars hip. He was elected captain of the basketball squad by his admirin g teammates and w as high scorer for the latter part of the season. A fighting guard, he graduate s with three letters.

Another fine guard with still a year left is Stan Peterson . Tall and cool, he plugged up many a hole in the Birming ham defense. A fine shot with plenty of speed, he has earned two letters in basketb all Dick Hopkins

Jo Armstrong Dennis Therrian was highpoint man for the half-seaso n he played. He is extremely tall and was counted on for at least ten points per gcone. Popular with the crowd, he gn;tduate d in January with three letters.

Hank Dahlquist was another capable defense man. He furnished a great deal of color by his belligeren t attitude on and off the floor. He graduate s in June with one letter.

A mid-seas on sensation was Bob Hopper, barrel-ch ested Tarzan guard, who vaulted into a first team berth by scoring ten points in the East Detroit game.

Illness hampered Dick Hopkins, but in the latter part of the season his performa nce as a pivot man proved that he possessed both brains and ability.

The first cross country team since the sport was abandone<I in 1932 completed a season that could be classed by many coaches a, lat above average.

The harriers won twice and were deleate<I live times. They took Hazel Parle and Wayne and lost to Ypsilanti, River Rouge, Royal Oak. Lincoln Parle, and Dearborn. They also took a third In the T. V. A. A. meet and fourth in the regionals.

Letter-winner& this season were Jack Brown, the only letterwinner who graduate<!; Frank Wangberg, Dick Morrison, Jack Hipple Fred Zoellin. Bob Hipple, Doug Groves, and Fred Kaarsberg Coach Engel. who thinks cross country a good sport in itself but also a good developer of clistance men for track. was lnslru• mental in reviving the tough two-mile race.

The chili has a plan for projr,cts ii would undertake. Among the activities are taking over duties at Pierce Field; operation ol the scoreboard; encowaging scholarship; holding one honor dance a year; keeping up the Johnson Memorial Plaque; goveming the wearing of letters; engraving of trophies; keeping of records and photographs of 1:1thletea; helping 011 publicity; working for au activity ticket; and having at least two assemblies a year.

Baldwin's former Varsity Club wcm disbanded because of "cra:y" inltlatioos, losing activities, disorderly moolings. nothing to do and not always paying out on its projects. All winners of athletic letters would be eligible for memben,hip in the Varsity Club. and it is expected that the club will prove a great asset both to the school and to our athletet. Until it. !oat year or so, the former club enjoyed more prestige then any other Baldwin _organization.

+ It was as if a chill cloud suddenly swept over Birmingham when the community received the news of Midge J oslyn's untimely death.

Perhaps friends and associations are the most important things a person can acquire in life which never will be lost; and Midge Joslyn had friends, so many that anyone who was at all associated with her gained something of her cheerful manner and qttiet willingness.

A friendly word imparted, a witticism exchanged, or a merry hello given as she passed will echo forever in the hearts of her fellow students as the living essence of Midge.

Although popular with both boys and girls and with faculty members, a leader in school affairs and Student Congress activities, Midge never failed to greet her every acquamtance, never failed to give a word of encouragement or lend a hand, but kept that unspoiled attitude so endearing both to those who knew her best and those acquaintances to whom she was gay, popular Midge Joslyn, a leader in her homeroom, class, and school.
