Learn to ''Sell Yourself" OU splendid boys and girls, preparing yourselves in the various grades of Birmingham's schools for the business of meeting the problems of life, will do well to learn this very important thing: to be able to sell yourself in the trade, business, or vocation that you enter when you leave high school or college.

At best, your schooling has definite limitations in an ability to fit you into a place of economic security in the adult world. Schools teach you dates in history, something of the languages used by people to convey thoughts from one to another, certain technical and scientific knowledge about the physical world in which you live, and a meagre smattering about human nature.

Let's assume that you, a boy or a girl, graduated from high school or college with high marks, eminently fitted to enter, let us say, journalism. You may be a master of good English, know a great deal of the scholastic background of the newspaper business, and very decidedly in need of a job. You approach a prospective employer with youthful shyness-almost bordering on an inferiority cpmplex- and hesitatingly ask: "I'd like a place on the staff of your newspaper."

The average newspaper editor reacts to this request negatively; for already he has a long waiting list of graduates who seek employment. Nothing about the seeker for a job has impressed the editor- who may not know that before him stands a boy or a girl who, with a certain amount of helpful supervision and kindly direction, would become a great reporter and writer. So the seeker for the job doesn't get one-and both the editor and the graduate are thus prevented from enjoying the mutual good that could have come from their making a business b~rgain.

For you must always remember, boys and girls, that the average newspaper editor is a busy man, with many after the jobs that open· from time to time. (This is also true of employers in most other lines, too.)

Now, suppose the hoy or girl came into the newspaper office and said something like this: "I've just graduated from high school or college, took a course in journalism, have been a great reader of history and good literature, like people, am able to get along with them, have read your newspaper for a long time, believe I can make good on it if you'll give me a trial- I don't want much to start- am even willing to work a month without pay if necessary- and please, Mr. Editor, just give me, as a representative of this year's crop of scholastic graduates, a chance to earn a living."

I'll bet that this sort of "selling" will tum the trick more times than it fails.

The world today wants people who are able to do a good selling job-and selling one's own talents and eagerness to work is not a science or art taught in high schools and colleges.

Learn to place yourself, as you would a piece of merchandise, upon the shelves, in the shopwindows, wrapped in such manner that you will display to a busy, hurrying world, the good value of your services.

I do not mean that you should become bold and raucous in presenting yourself to a prospective employer- not at all. But I do suggest that you learn, from the biographies, the lips, of others, and from your own observations, how to add to the things you learn, in school and college, a bit of the art of successfully selling yourself to an employer- selling in such a way that you impress the employer with your ability, your personality, and your willingness to assume and ably discharge responsibilities given to you.

Truth Is Beauty

N

EAR the close of the last century, on a small Finnish farm, was born a man who was destined to become one of the world's most famous architects. Eliel Saarinen, creative genius and exponent of self-expression in art, brought to this country a new mind and a fresh appreciation of the beauty in our surroundings. His was the triumph of competition in America. His entry in the Chicago Tribune competition won for him the acclaim of American art lovers and presented him to the New World.

From the early scribblings on his school hooks in Finland, Eliel Saarinen took up the study of architecture in the University of Helsingfors, the small nation's capital.

Much of his youth he spent in travelling throughout Europe. Russia, Esthonia, Sweden and Germany fed the hunger for knowledge which was his constant companion. All of these tongues he mastered, and all of the art of these countries he absorbed.

As we entered his studio in the Cranhrook Art Center, we were immediately conscious of his magnetic appeal and found DD difficulty in understanding his phenomenal SUCCe88.

"Draw up your chairs and tell me what you want to know," he said with a gesture of his fine artistic hands.

Immediately we asked the question which was uppermost in our minds. "How did you first begin to study art?"

"Ever since my school days in Finland, I have studied art. My other studies suffered, but I was doing the thing that I loved. When I won the Chicago Tribune competition, I came to America to further my knowledge. The heart is the dictator and art must be in one before it may he drawn out," he answered, and his expressive actions gave an added emphasis to his words.

He taught at the University of Michigan prior to his engagement as instn.•ctor at Cranhrook Academy.

We asked his opinion of modern art, lmpreBBionism, and Sur-realism.

"Art," he said, "is fundamentally the method of one's own projection of emotion or expression. The Impressionists do good work when they do not attempt too much.

The great evil is that the so-called 'modern' art is likely to be artificial."

On our school system, in relation to creative efforts being allowed to operate freely, he said, "Beauty must come from within. Without that inner beauty of character, art is dead. You would not prefer a girl who is pretty of face and full of deceit, to one whose pulchritude lies beneath the surface, would you?"

"You have seen the art of the World's Fair buildings, Mr. Saarinen. Would you tell us your opinions? Is it an indication of the new American Style of architecture?" we queried.

"As Fair buildings they were ideal, but as for American architecture, that is impossible. Architecture is as much our self-expression as any other thing. This style lacks cultural beauty; hut in time we will find ourselves, and then we will have a style of buildings strictly American.

The time was growing short, and we rose to take our leave. As we walked out of his house, a splendid example of the fulfillment of his teachings and philosophy of art, we felt the poignancy of Keats's expression: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty,"-that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."

On Thought If you were to ask the average man of the street what the word "thought" means, you would probably receive a very sketchy definition. After many er's and ah's, he would undoubtedly say something such as, "A thought is an idea," or, "A thought is mental concentration on a subject."

Although this subject is probably one of the most vague to him, it is the most im• portant thing in his life. We are what we think. All that affects us; whether we fee] well or ill, old or young, rich or poor, our thoughts are directly responsible. We are as strong as our faith, or as cowardly as our fears.

Dr. Charles Mayo once said, "Man as analyzed in our laboratories is worth about ninety-eight cents. Seven bars of soap, lime enough to whitewash a chicken coop, phosphorous enough to cover the heads of about a thousand matches is not very much.

It is the brain that counts." Without a mind man would be a brute, a stone, merely a mass of earth. As he exists today, he is the ultimate in perfection, the most wonderful thing in the world.

It is easy to perceive that we live in our minds. Our thoughts are the only things that really matter. Man has conquered the sea and defeated the elements. He can accumulate vast wealth and erect gigantic edifices for his tomb. But when the end comes, they remain behind only to mock his puny pride.

One thousand years from today, no one will remember you or me. We are hut pebbles on the beach of eternity. The rocks that stand out to be viewed by all are the scientists and the philosophers. And they are great only because they have attained the ultimate in their minds.

We are born with minds that are totally blank, but with vast potentialities. Everything we do, everything we see, all that we think, make us what we are. Therefore, it is imperative that we strive for only the better things in life. Today, you are the sum of all your experiences and your thoughts. What you will be ten years from now rests entirely with you. Your mind is your own, and only your own possession. Put in it what you desire to. But remember, it is the world you will inhabit in the years to come.

Fred Waring Born into a family of hankers in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, Fred M. Waring seemed destined to follow a career of finance. But inclinations of his later youth proved to be away from bank notes and toward musical notes. The following of those natural tendencies plus happy circumstances has made him an international figure in the field of popular music.

The orchestra which later became known as Waring's Pennsylvanians originated during Fred's high school days. Composed of four members, including brother Tom and "Poley" McClintock, it operated for the pleasure of the home town folks. At Penn State College greater demands were made upon this little band, and new members were added to make a respectable showing at house parties and school dances. So smooth was the music, and so ingenious the entertainment produced that their fame spread. and they began to receive engagements from other schools.

So it happened that back in 1921 they were engaged to play for the University of Michigan J-Hop, their first big break. They came West, twelve strong, carrying their belongings in three suitcases, and delighted the Hop attenders so much that they were 8

Smooth "HOW do you do, Mr. Waring?" This most gratifying expnience of speaking face to face with Fred Waring came only after a succession of attempts that ended in naught. The evening before, four of us had hurried down to the Stage entrance of the Michigan Theater at 7:00 p. m. whence an interview with the renowned Fred Waring would supposedly evolve. It was only after four trials, however, that on the afternoon following our first attempt, through a letter of introduction kindly written by Mr. Rupp, we finally succeeded in obtaining a private conference with Mr. Waring himself. Jubilant indeed were we when Mr. Waring's secretary revealed he would see us and asked us to step into his office.

We were cordially received by a man about 35 years old, of rather small stature, and clean-cut features. The ingenuous nature peculiar to a man of his walk made him seem possessed with youthful qualities, although lines of grey on the side of his head indicated years of hard work and long hours. His sensitive face betrayed the high pitch to which he was strung by the nerve-racking feat of producing five stage shows and two rehearsals daily and two radio programs each week continuously for weeks in a row.

Small wonder that when asked what the hardest part of being an orchestra leader was, he spontaneously answered with a whimsical smile, "At present, it seems to he keeping in a good humor." It was evident that our presence meant the sacrifice of precious minutes of repo11e. So we lost no time in getting to the point.

"When and how did you decide to follow a musical career?"

"Probably while I was in college or shortly after I graduated. I earned my way through college by organizing a band and playing for dances during my spare time. Although I took a course in architecture at Penn and intended to follow this line, I never left music."

"Does your hand now consist of many of the original members?"

"The nucleus is still made up of the original members, but we occasionally add to or make changes in the organization."

"In the many years of the 'Pennsylvanians' existence, you must have run up against many problems. What single one would you say is the hardest to solve?"

"It is, without a doubt, accommodating the fickle tastes of the public. Their likes and dislikes change so often that it's difficult for us to know just what type of music is most pleasing to the majority of people."

"Then you don't arrange your programs according to what you yourselves, as listen• ers, would like to hear?"

"Not at all. Very few good hands play the pieces the members like best. It is necessary for us to feel out and play the numbers which most appeal to the public at the time, with little regard to the players' own opinions."

"Where do you most enjoy playing? Is it at theaters, on the radio, in foreign countries, at hotels, or at college proms?"

"At theaters. The reason is purely a selfish one. We enjoy playing where we are the center of attraction. At dances, the girls and fellows are the main interests, and the band is secondary; on the radio we can't see the enjoyment we give our audience; but at theaters, the people come for the express purpose of hearing and seeing us play, and it's there we like best to show off everything we have."

"Have you ever played abroad?"

"Yes. We made a tour of Europe in 1928."

"How were you received there, and what did they enjoy most?"

A New Deal for the Baldwin Track T earn HE Baldwin track team is badly in need of a home field. Most of the other schools with which we have athletic relations have good tracks, but we have never had a suitable one. This fact necessitates our having all of our meets away from home.

When the plans for Pierce Field were drawn up, they provided for a three-lane, four-hundred-forty-yard track and high-jumping and broad-jumping pits. These were to be placed around the outside of the football field. A baseball diamond was also provided for. The infield was to be placed in the southwest corner of the field with the outfield extending into the football field. There were to be concrete stands on the east side of the field and temporary stands on the west side, to be taken down at the end of the football season. These plans, if carried out, would provide a very suitable athletic field for the various teams.

Baldwin has usually had good track teams, but they would have been much better if they had had a suitable place to train. No athlete can train properly on hard, rough ground, and no race can be run on a track that is marked off with stakes on a rough field.

The Varsity Club is doing its part to secure a new track, but it needs outside support. Now is the time for all the loyal sons and daughters of Baldwin to come to the aid of their track team. The team works hard to win glory for the !:'chool; the school should do something for the track team.

Sports Bosses same time most important organization in our Achool, is the Athletic Board of Control. Everybody seems to be a trifle vague on just what it is, what it does, and where it meets. It would be a good idea if a little information on this subject were brought to light.

After interviewing the sports' hig shots in the school and delving into old reconlR, here is what we find: The Athletic Board of Control is the power behind the throne at Bal,lwin when it comes to sport activitieR. With it rests the responsibility of making many important decisions, and it has the entire say-so in regards to whether Joe Doaks is J!OinJ! to get a letter for running his head off around a track.

Golf from the Locker Room

O

N a warm afternoon last summer, I walked into the locker room of one of the dis-

trict golf clubs. Seated at a table was a short, rather plump man, with an extremely pink face. Around him sat a half dozen men who were clinking glasses and patting him on the back. He had broken one hundred for the first time, and was as happy as a four-year-old boy on Christmas.

Ten minutes later the club champion stalked in. His shirt was wet with sweat, his tie was tom half off, and he was carrying a mashie that was bent like a pretzel. Painfully he dropped into a chair. Slowly he ran his hand through a head of disheveled hair.

"Have a drink, Joe?" asked the fellow who had just played the best game of his career. He nodded his head negatively for an answer.

"How did you go?" one of the more optimistic members of the group questioned.

"Oh, my god," he replied, "I hooked three five iron shots into traps, and topped a drive. It all adds up to a lousy seventy-nine. I'm going to quit the game." He grabbed a towel and limped sadly off to the showers.

Turning on my heel, I started off to the grille, resolving always to remain in the ninety to one hundred claBS. - JOHN Neerken

Our T earns Come Through

OOTBALL, baseball, basketball and track; these are the mainstays of sport. They all

are fast, hard games which hold up the competitive spirit of many schools.

Let us look back just a few years in the history of Baldwin High School and look at the teams. In 1933, the great year in Birmingham sports, our football team won the class B championship. The track team, not to be out done by the football team, ran off with the class B crown. The basketball team with such stars as "Ken" McBride and "Fred" Schwarze went through a fine season.

In 1934 Birmingham did not shine in any sport except track. The track team came through again to get high honors in the State meet. In 1935 Birmingham improved in all fields in which she took part. Track again was a highlight. The basketball team of 1935 and 1936, after passing through a fair season, ran wild in the district tourney and became district champions.

If we took a rapid picture of the past three years, we could safely say that Binningham has made a splendid name for herself in the field of sport.

Charles Hoyt

Coach "Charlie" Hoyt come to Michigan in 1923 in the capacity of trainer and assistant to the beloved "Steve" Farrell. Following the latter's death, in 1931, Mr. Hoyt became head track coach. He is a graduate of Grinnell College, where he was an outstanding track man. His world's record in the 220 yard event over a coned track stood many years. He was also holder of the 100 yard National Interscholastic Record.

Mr. Hoyt's record at Michigan, as a coach, has been brilliant; each year since Hoyt took charge of the Wolverines, his teams have won the Indoor or Outdoor Conference Championship. He has come to be justly regarded as one of the nation's outstanding trainers and teachers of track men.

He is tall and slim with a mouth that reflects good humor and determination as well.

"I suppose you fellows wou]<l like to know how we're goin1,t to fare in the conference meet this year. eh?" he began. We nodded assent, and he continued, "Well, as nearly as I can see we have a 50-50 chance with Ohio State, or possihly Wisconsin. You see we were hit rather hard by ineli1dbi1ity this year, but the boys have picked up every point that I considered it possib]e for them to do under the circumstances."

"Yon see," he went on with a wistful smile, "Jesse Owens has recently become eligible for Ohio State under their quarterly system, and you have to concede Ohio twenty points right there. They are virtually won before the meet; so Michigan will have to depend, as she did Jast year, on her all-around balance to pick up place point8 instead of firsts."

Hi8 intense interest and enthusiasm in a11 of our discussion seemed to explain, in a great sense, the secret of his success as a coach. He seemed to he one who was not only keenly interested in the sport and the team as a who]e, hut also in the hoys who worked under him as individuals. This we were to find out shortly afterwaril when we ca1led his attention to the fact that several boy8 from Birmingham had made good in track at the University. "Yes," he said, "I remember them all very well. Rod Cox held the national intercoUegiate record for the hammer-throw. Then there was Tom Ellerby, captain of the 1933 team, and an exce1lent middle distance man.

"Now we have Clayt Brelsford from Birmingham who it, probably the 1,treatest miler that we've ever had at Michigan. I look for him to rea11y go next year when he gains confidence and experience: he is one of the fastest boys I have ever seen.'· "Just how great a part does physica] fitnel!s play in track?" we queried.

"Well, of course," he began slowly, "In track, as in any other sport, one must be in physical shape to compete. But, however great a factor this may he, the fe1low ·must he in a good menta] condition as welJ. I believe that this plays a great part in Michigan's success in track. You see," he added, "Michigan has a fine tradition for good track teams, and I believe this adds greatly to the mora1e of the teams."

"To illustrate this," he continued, leaning back in his chair, "let u@ take, for example, last year's Conference Meet, which was the greatest track meet that I have ever witnessed. There was plenty at stake, and the boys were up against what is probably the toughest competition in the country. We had some tough breaks in the form of injuries before the meet, but instead of folding up, the fellows went out there to win, and despite the great exhibition of Jesse Owens who broke three world's records, they won the meet. That's what I mean by good mental condition.''

"I can see that it entails good coaching as well, though, to keep that spirit," we put in.

"Yes, but the boys themeelves deserve the credit primarily," he cow1tered with typica] modesty. "You see," he went on, "a11 these boys are clean ]ivers and train naturaUy. We don't have to watch them. Almost all of them work for their board over here, and have neither the time nor the inclination to break traininir."

"What do you think of high school competition as preparation for col1ege track?" we asked.

"If it isn't overdone, high school track is ideal in building up boys for collegiate Continued on Page 72

Pockets F ALL the pockets in the world were made into one large pocket, you could place in it the Empire State Building and still have space left for a handkerchief.

Pockets are most used by the more civilized nations of the world, the complexity of modern life being reflected in the more numerous pockets of men's clothing. The completely attired man carries from fifteen to twenty objects in seventeen pockets.

In making this statement all figures have been slightly understated, and mathematical computations are approximations. There are about one billion men. Each man has an average of fifty pockets. The average man has around four outfits; and there are five pockets in a pair of trousers, one in a shirt, four in a vest, and four or more pockets in a coat. Persons with large wardrobes are balanced by such people as Mahatma Gandhi and his followers. An average pocket has a capacity of eight cubic inches. Four hundred billion cubic inches are more than two hundred million cubic feet. Considering the Empire State Building as having a volume of one hundred sixty million cubic feet, we have left forty million cubic feet, which would be sufficient for our handkerchief.

In his top coat there are three pockets. He carries his gloves and automobile keys in the side pockets and possibly a flask or cardcase in the inside ,breast pocket. There are five pockets in his coat. Fashion has decreed against bulging side pockets; so probably the only thing carried in them are his hands. The little chan_ge pocket inside the right side pocket is used to carry small coins for tips and other minor remunerations.

From the left breast pocket a handkerchief shyly peeps forth. Tliis handkerchief is for ornamental purposes and is used only in emergencies. Our gentleman will carry letters and a cigarette case in the inner pocket of his coat. However, if he smokes cigars, an imposing row of them is generally placed in the upper left vest pocket. Otherwise, a watch and penknife linked together with a chain are carried in the upper vest pockets, while the lower vest pockets contain matches or a cigar lighter. In case the man carries a fountain pen or pencil, he places them in an upper vest pocket and the watch in the watch pocket of the trousers with the knife in the right trousers pocket. In the left trousers pocket keys, except automobile keys, are carried. The two remaining pockets are known as hip pockets. The one on the left side was made to carry a wallet or billfold and can be buttoned to prevent loss of its contents. In early days men carried a pistol or flask in the right hip pocket. Both have proved very uncomfortable when sat upon; and their pl~ce is now taken hy the handkerchief. The shirt pocket is used only when no vest is worn.

Perhaps some reader, noting all this, may remark, "How obvious!" Yet I wager that he is guilty of some grave offense against the sensible use of pockets. The most common crime is that of carrying coins and keys intermingled in a trousers pocket. There are three objections to this: loss of money while seated, wear and tear upon the pocket, and the difficulty of extracting the proper coins or keys with one hand, plus the annoyance of jingling the various metals.

Camping in Its True Light "HOW foolish people are to huddle in their silly, soft beds in their stuffy, little houses when they might be lying on a fragrant, springy bed of cedar, listening to the breeze sighing through the pine needles and watching the white beams of the northern lights shoot higher and higher across the sky."

Such were my thoughts as I lay peacefully and securely under my blankets and poncho, protected from marauding insects by a mosquito bar. I was taking my first fling at real camping in the wilds of northern Ontario. In this frame of mind, I drifted off to sleep, drugged by long hours of paddling in the open air and a goodly meal of salmon lake trout under my belt.

Several hours later I was awakened from my peaceful slumbers by a loud crash: Something wet and cold and altogether unearthly had draped itself about my face. I sat bolt upright and began struggling frantically with this ghostly presence, when I suddenly realized that it was merely my mosquito bar. Rain was coming down in torrents, and the offending bar had become so weighted down with water that it sagged onto my bed. Hoping to rid myself of it altogether, I gave it a husky yank, which effort netted me only a cascade of water from the tree to which it was fastened. Feeling extremely foolish, I subsided under my sodden blankets and tried vainly to contract my• self into a small enough huddle to get under the poncho. There I waited for the dawn, growing colder, wetter, and more cramped as the hours ticked slowly by. My bed seemed made of roots and stones, each one intent upon boring a hole into my back, and at every move I made, water seeped slyly in somewhere.

The sky in the east grew grayer and grayer, until finally the red sun leered at me over the tree tops. Gingerly I extracted myself from my blankets and the toils of the mosquito bar, and hastened to the beach, there to build a fire and thaw my thoroughly benumbed self out. As the wood was wet and my fingers stiff and cold, I had no little difficulty in getting my fire started; but finally it blazed up, and I hovered over it, my damp clothes steaming.

Camping, I decided, is not all hearts and flowers, but even so, I believe I prefer it to the stuffy little houses.

A VE you ever noticed the calm silence that precedes a raging storm?

The sky darkens, not a leaf is so much as stirred by a breeze; the atmosphere is "leaden, as if sensing the approaching torrent. Then suddenly the wind increases to a gale, the rain begins falling, not as a gentle spring shower, but a raging, crashing electric storm. Hell seemingly breaks loose everywhere.

Such is the calm that prevails over a certain all night restaurant in Birmingham, known as Evernutts. About 11 :45 an observer looking through the window would see a deserted, empty establishment. Twelve o'clock. The dance is over and the storm descends.

Cars, loaded to overflowing, emerge from every direction and come to a shrieking stop at the curb. Fellows and girls literally pour themselves from the vehicles, and charge madly on this favorite eating house. Not bothering to open the door sedately, they ram it back on its stops and dive for the nearest chair. "Two hamburgs and a cup of coffee- ." "G'me a milkshake- " "Make mine a toasted roll- ." Oh- I'll take a large glass of tomato juice - quick."

Then the songs begin, laEting 'til all food has been consumed. The hour is getting late. The. crowd is gradually thinning out. The pendulum swings back, and then descends another period of calm- that following the storm.

Con£essions of An American Piper NE March day after school, I strolled aimlessly into one of the classrooms. Seeing a book that looked interesting, I picked it up, dropped into a seat, and started to read. A short time later I looked up to find the room empty, with the exception of a handful of students and two teachers, and the door locked. I was about to ask to be let out, when a fellow with a businesslike look on his face (I later found he was the editor of the school magazine) and a stack of papers in his hand, came up to me.

"You working on The Piper?" I said innocently.

He gave a disgusted snort, dropped a pile of papers in my lap, and replied, "So are you. Think up tricky titles for these two, rewrite this one, and come hack in ten minutes for more work."

"You see . . . but I . . . that is . . ." I mumbled trying to explain that I really couldn't write, and didn't give a hoot for all the bagpipes in Scotland anyway. However, after several menacing glances from my English teacher, and a threat to give mt> a "D," I sat down to work.

I came in the next night, and the next, and the next. That was three weeks ago.

Now I am a full-blooded Piper. I have acquired the knack of going around school with the top of my shirt open and my tie halfway down. Whenever I look in the mirror I find my hair disheveled, my cheeks sunken, and a far-away look in my eyes. Even now you may see me walk down the hall and suddenly, with a vicious smile, grip someone with a taloned hand and ask for his opinion or a subscription.

Although I am but a shadow of my former self, I have not yet gone through a complete metamorphosis. Sometimes I even become sentimental enough to reminisce, and in my heart I cherish fond memories of the days when I was "footloose and fancy free."

What's In a Name?

HILE perusing the records of Baldwin's student enrollment, we were very surprised to discover that our school is represented in every line of endeavor. The wisdom of a Sage; the Good of the King and Church; the hardiness of a Forester and the cunning of the Fox are all here, as is the canny Scott; and light fiction is well sponsored by Holmes and Watson, right out of Conan Doyle's detective thrillers.

History, too, gives us Generals Sheridan, Jackson, and Meade; and the New Deal presents us with Morehouses and Barnes. Taylor is hand in hand with Spinning and Weaver, and although we may neglect the butcher, we have a Baker, Miller, and

Porter.

The world of industry offers a Packard, and aviation gives us Wright; but we saunter into the country to find the Shepherd tending his White flocks, with here and there a Black sheep, a Bell hanging from his neck.

From the roster of hobbies we derive the Walker, the Gardner, and the Fischer, Archery gives its Bauman, and there are many who would resort to their old Gunn if their partner should Trump an ace. Everyone has his Price, however; but whether he is Cross or Gay or Savage, a good Mixer can make the Day brighter with Welch's grape juice.

Belgium makes us a present of the Hague; chocolate yields its Hersey; storm clouds form in the Upper atmosphere and it looks a little Rainey in the West; the Wood all about us seems to be closing in like a Wall, so we head breathlessly for home.

Three Don'ts For Egotists

D

ON'T think that "All the world's a stage," and that the principal actor and star player is none other than yourself. You must realize that there are other sterling actors who are much superior in their portrayal of the egotist to yourself. There are many things at which others excel of which you may never have even been aware. Some of these things are perhaps so complex as to leave you in a state of nervous prostration if you should attempt to analyze them. You didn't think that was po88ible, did you?

The world is definitely NOT your oyster unless you are willing to plnmb the depths of a cold, deep sea of worldly effort to acquire it.

Don't allow yourself to become so narrow minded as to cause the loss of your perspective when you measure human equality. You must realize that others are striving to overcome obstacles in the forms of habits and complexes, both inferiority and superiority. That aloof manner and haughty demeanor that you flaunt in the faces of your slower classmates, does not become a being who is only as free and equal as they. Forget that you may know a little more about a few things than some people! Ten chances to one, the things that you pride yourself on knowing are not even of interest to the vast majority and they would not trouble to learn them if they had the opportunity!

Don't allow yourself to be dazzled and blinded by the brilliance of your own intellectual light!

The most pitiable thing about your whole simple self is that you not only try to fool others, but you lay it on so thickly that you find yourself stuck with it and eventually you believe it yourself! There is something very radically wrong. You must first be true to yourself before you can convince others of your sincerity. What kind of a dumb-sliow is this puppetry? You who profess to he so righteous and so far above the crowd are even false to yourself! This is deserving of the leather medal! Wake up!

Snap out of the masquerade and start living on the same plane as the rest of us! Don't continue in this acting, but rather allow yourself to be taught and humble your proud self to listen to and profit by the examples of others.

Do We Know What We're Doing?

T SEEMS that we all, whether we like it or not,

are being educated. But we all have wondered at one time or another just what this is all about; just what it is that our educational system is trying to accomplish. Frankly, until we looked into the subject a little more deeply, we thought that anythini connected with school could hardly he anything hut boring reading, but when we examined the case we actually found it quite interesting. Here is what we discovered in a good reference, expressed in rather flowery English:

"The word education evolved from the Latin 'e', meaning out, and 'duco' to lead or draw out. This derivation expresses the fundamental aims and purposes of education.

But more broadly its essential function is to develop the individual's social inheritance, to prepare him for the responsibilities of modern life, and to assure him a useful future and occupation. It should, furthermore, equip him with a normal healthy mind, and promote the gradual development of wisdom and sound judgment of values, which may enable him to select wisely for himself a praiseworthy and useful vocation, and avocation us well."

After wading through this we were about ready to quit, for reasons all too obvious.

What Is This Thing ((School Spirit"?

CHOOL spirit is not a concrete form of matter that one can easily lay his hands upon. It is a quality, a feeling that exists in and about the student body and faculty of a school.

Yet, in its broadest sense, it is not a spirit confined to the school alone. It is a part of that universal brotherhood of mankind ( discounting wars and other upheavals that would seem to make for a contradiction of this statement) and a part of patriotism, love for one's country.

School spirit is a kindred feeling, a regard for the welfare and wishes of others. It is characterized by a forgetfulness of self and a consciousness of other persons, their ideals, and their ambitions. It is a spirit of unity, comradeship, and cooperation.

The patriotic angle of school spirit is shown by a love for the building and an enthusiasm for the activities of the particular institution of learning where one is a member of either the student body or the faculty. There is a feeling of united effort for the promotion of shared ideals.

Examples of school spirit may be shown by a large attendance of students at a football game, by the restraint or open condemnation on the part of the majority of the members of the student body towards a boring assembly program, or it may be displayed by an interest taken by the student body as a whole in the misfortunes or achievements of one of its members.

To put it as briefly as possible, which is none too briefly, school spirit is a group feeling of fellowship and cooperation. It is a standing-together against outside opposition and a sharing-together of trials and triumphs in a like manner on the part of all.

Attitudes N A certain sense, attitudes have a very dominating influence upon academic courses.

For further analysis and consideration, it is necessary to separate these attitudes into two parts: first, attitude toward teacher, and second, attitude toward subject pursued.

All the teachers, to a certain extent, have developed a degree of reputation based upon the opinions of the student body and former classes. Now, the question is: Should new students develop their attitude toward teachers upon the opinions laid down by others? If they wish to succeed in school, the answer is no. Instead of relying upon others, they must develop their own individual attitudes. In the course of development, they should endeavor to find the teacher's good points, not the worst.

School subjects, also, have obtained a reputation. These reputations are usually deceiving, and they try to hide the true nature of the subjects. In order to combat these fallacious ideas, the students must create an optimistic attitude toward the courses and tackle them regardless of former opinions.

The students must not accept the advice or opinion of others or become skeptical.

Instead they should develop a favorable attitude toward teachers and subjects in the light of their own personal experience.

Cutting Our Teeth TUDENT government is an experiment in our school; it is the first time anything of this sort has ever been tried, and so it is not strange that it should have a painful beginning. Why should a Student Congress be a rip roaring success until it has been going for several years? It's foolish for anyone to think that something that is new and as experimental as the Student Congress should be run as smoothly as a weH-oiled set of ball bearings. Perfection or even productive cooperation is a process of evolution; it takes time and experimentation; unlike most things, it can't be achieved by pushing a flock of buttons.

The organization now known as the Ford Motor Company didn't attain its present worldwide reputation for efficiency and fine management in two or three years.

It took nearly a decade, and during that time changes and improvements were being constantly advanced. We don't intend to indicate that it will take the Student Congress ten years to establish itself, but it's true that it does take time. An organiza• tion of this sort can't he expected to achieve its ultimate place in the scheme of things in any less than three years. In the meantime let's be tolerant and give this new or• ganization a chance. It wiJI come through if it is given the proper backing and en• couragement.

We have heard it said that a student organization of any kind is impractical in our school. This is a defeatist's attitude and no thinking person would express such an opm1on. There is really a place for such an organization in the school and a real need for it. Arbitrary discipline is distasteful to everybody, and the sooner the students have a say in the matter the better it will be. We feel that if the Student Con•

gress is given proper support, it will eventually he the most important organization in the school, and one with a real voice in the administration of Mchool affairs. Certainly not many would turn thumbs down on this idea.

"But," you ask, "how can we achieve this rather idealistic place?" The formula is really quite simple.

Let us be constructive as well as critical in our opm1ons of the Congress. Let's quit dragging the anchor; it's certain we can't make much headway with this handicap. What the Congress needs is united support. There's a percental(e in it; the benefactors are nobody but ourselves.

The Activity Period F THERE is any factor that can be criticized in making the present school schedule it is that which has resulted in the so-called "activity period." Althouith designed to benefit the students, it has degenerated into a worthless waste of time, a "bugaboo" to both students and faculty. It is Jong enouJth to make the time lost a big factor, and too short to be of any good use.

Each Tuesday at l :15 everyone trips off to a club, and one half hour later everyone trips back, not an iota smarter for the time spent. The active clubs haven't time to get started, and the inactive clubs just remain inactive.

Occasionally the period is given over to study. Pardon us, hut did we say study?

The time is spent, a~ everyone knows, in empty conversation: and although aJI mean well, no one works.

The activity period is not spent constructively more than once every two weeks, and we find it the most boring part of the day. This thirty minutes is looked upon as a joke by all concerned, and anything, even starting classes at l: 15, would be vastly superior.

Extra-curricular activities could be taken care of after school to the best advantage. The Publications Club and athletic teams, two of the most successful school organizations, serve as shining examples of what can be done when genuinely interested students willingly give up their own time to get the values activities have to offer.

Today many students go to meetings just to while away their time. If their organizations met outside of school, a tremendous amount of the dead-wood would be Jost.

Starting classes at l : 15 and holding club meetings after school is our suggestion.

Lanny Ross

Lancelot Patrick Ross was horn January 19, 1906, in Seattle, Washington. He comes of theatrical people. His father, Douglas Ross, was a Shakespearian actor. His mother was an accomplished musician. He went to high school at Taft in Watertown, Connecticut. At Yale, Lanny established many track records and acquired an A. B. degree. He was asked to participate in the Olympics, but passed up the opportunity to perform in a concert by the Yale Glee Club. While a law student at Columbia, he earned money as a member of a radio orchestra. He later had his own program as the Troubador of the Moon. His first picture was a failure; so he intends to study before he tries again. He married his business manager, Olive White.

The New Launcelot One of the most pleasing personalities of the stage, screen, or radio today is Lanny RoBB. His manly perfection has won for him a niche in the annals of the theatre that is exceeded only by his marvelous lyrical voice and his dynamic personality. Geniality and good fellowship are expressed in his every gesture.

His entrance onto the stage is greeted with a spontaneous burst of applause, an~ one notices the listeners' attention is immediately focused on his commanding presence.

But it is after the performance that we obtain our most intimate glimpse of Mr. Ross. He greets us in his dressing room in a hearty, boyish manner.

"Shall we sit down?" he queries, in a voice which has lost none of its smooth, lyric qualities, "And what may I do for you?"

We immediately feel entirely at ease under his friendly glance, and feel that we really would like to know him better. We asked if he has any favorite city, his travels having taken him over all the United States.

"No," he replied, "I have no favorite city. 'Any old place I hang my hat,' you know." He laughed.

"Will you tell us about your career, how you became a singer?"

His face became serious, and his eyes assumed a depth of reflection which served to illustrate to us the true artistry which lay beneath the airy exterior of Launcelot RoBB, the light-hearted tenor.

"When I was six years old, I made my first public appearance; it seems I have never stopped singing since that time. I first sang as a boy soprano, then as a tenor with the Yale Glee Club. I was told, however, that a singing career would never pay, and so I decided to become a lawyer."

Lanny graduated from Yale with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and proceeded to Columbia University to complete his law studies.

"I worked my way through college singing on the radio," he added with a wry smile, '"but they didn' t always pay me. Eventually I was offered the magnificent sum of $200 instead of the usual $10 for my radio work, and I felt that there u:as something to be gained in a singing career after all."

We inquired what advice he felt free to give us concerning a career on the stage or radio.

"I think a college education furnishes the best background for almost any career. It gives one a broader outlook and a better appreciation of one's surroundings," he advised.

"Mr. Ross," we asked, "What is your opinion of the value of radio amateur programs?"

"I really think that amateur shows are doing a great deal of harm in encouraging people to think they have talent. In most cases the amateurs are very mediocre performers. A really talented artist works to success gradually."

"Are you planning to make any more pictures?" we inquired.

"Oh, yes, I hope to make more pictures in the near future. You know, I worked with George Arliss when I was a boy, and he is still my favorite actor. We are still the best of friends."

"What is your ambition in life?"

"Well, my greatest ambition is to become a concert singer. My mother's ambition for me is to sing concerts and eventually to sing opera."

A deeper, mellower tone crept into his lyrical voice and we left feeling certain that he would certainly some day fulfill his mother's desires.

Tops TAMER OF CHAOS JAMES ALLEN, "Gentleman Jim," as he is known, probably deserves the title of Leader of Baldwin. His cool, matter-of-fact manner and vast supply of general knowledge mark him as outstanding. One thing few students and teachers suspect, and that's Jim's capacity for hard work and complete reliability. With the exception of the junior year, Jim has been president of his class throughout its high school course. He is, however, especially known to underclassmen as the man who presides over assemblies. He has served on the football program staff and as Editor-in-Chief of The Piper. In addition to all his other activities, he has maintained an honor record for most of his high school course. His fearless aggressiveness and intellectual honesty mark him as most independent of student leaders.

MEGAPHONE MAN CHARLES BOYNTON, properly named "G-man Chuck," certainly earns his place in any "Who's Who." He has acquired a splendid scholastic record and his association with almost every school activity demonstrates his capacity for leadership and responsibility. Chuck's cheerh;ading ability is second to none. His hobby is fingerprinting, and we sincerely expect to find him some day in the Government Intelligence Service.

BAND WIZARD ARNOLD BERNDT is noted for the fine bands he turns out at Baldwin. His keen sense of humor and embarrassing command of sarcasm, plus a complete knowledge of instruments and teaching, make him 100% efficient in getting results. He has the happy faculty of being able to tone down squeaks. He is a past master of the art of playing a cornet and has served as judge in the national cornet solo contests. His favorite pa~ time is tinkering with radios and electricity. He has constructed an electrical bassoon that can be played like a piano; all he needs to complete it is a keyboard.

CLEAN-UP MAN TOM ASHWELL, the jovial Keeper of the Keys, has become a permanent part of Baldwin, having been here twenty years. He has started many a constructive clean-up campaign and is primarily responsible for our spotless shining halls. Tom's very obliging nature is seasoned with a dash of common sense that stumps many a freshman. He guards fiercely the cleanly painted walls and keeps them the pride of his staff.

ROUGH CUT ROBERT HARRINGTON might well be called the original strong, silent man of Baldwin. Having many times proved his ability on the football field, he has been justly chosen captain of the 1936 football squad. His excellent artistic ability makes him Baldwin's McClelland Barclay. His favorite pastime consists of eating peanut butter sandwiches and chocolate malteds.

CAPABLE BETTY SPINNING has carved a real niche for herself in school affairs. Her leadership is undoubted, for we find evidence of it in scholarship, dramatics, and school politics. She had served in the Student Congress and has made many worthwhile suggestions. Besides those qualities which make her noteworthy in school life, we understand that she is a most artistic knitter and a capable cook.

The Sophisticate

T

WO girls came in Schettler's Drug Store Tuesday noon; one was a fourteen year sophisticate, the other a fourteen year old that families would approve of. I am going to call them Margot and Terry for their own sake as well as for mine.

"Of course you don't smoke." Margot said, taking out a package of Camels and lighting one.

"No, but I'd like to", was the eager reply.

"Don't do it. It's a horrible habit, darling," Margot drawled as with an air of disdain she blew smoke over everyone.

"What are you going to have to eat?" Terry asked.

"I suppose I'll have a toasted tuna and a milk shake," was the answer.

"I'm going to have that too." The tone of Terry's voice meant "Whatever you have is perfect."

After the sandwiches came, Margot said, "I do hope I have my money. I'm always losing something. Last week I lost my whole allowance, and I did so want to have my hair touched up. I just couldn't bear to have it get dark."

"I don't think it ever would. It's such a beautiful blonde color now," said darkhaired . Terry as her eyes drank in Margot's blonde loveliness. "I wish I could have mine cut short like yours, but mother wants me to keep it this long until I'm sixteen," she added.

"Yes, I'm always losing something. Last Friday at the barn dance I lost my seal muff. Mother was furious. It turned out to be an awful brawl, and besides that there were so many young kids there." Margot blew smoke through her nose in a very sophisticated manner.

"Did it last very late?" Terry asked, eager to hear all she could.

"Oh, I got home about a quarter of three. I hope mother doesn't walk in. She's so inconsistent. She doesn't mind my taking a cocktail, but she hates to see me smoke."

"You're doubling up on your school work, aren't you?" another question from Terry.

"Yes, I'm trying to get through high school as quickly as possible. Why, I just couldn't bear to stay here three more years. The boys are so young as it is." Margot said as she roughed up the back of her hair.

"Won't you have to study hard?"

"Yes, I suppose so, but it will be worth it. After having dates with college inen it's such a bore to date these kids around here," Margot smiled pityingly with her mouth full of food.

The Kid Brother of Vesuvius In the last days of Pompeii, when Mr. Toothacker was just a little hoy, there was a great volcanic eruption. He was too young to remember any of the details, but they were related to him by Pliny the Younger, who had witnessed the eruption. In later years, this experience provided the inspiration for a science project.

About three years ago, this project was carried out. A working model of a volcano and geyser was constructed by the Physics and Physiography classes. Although this was a satisfactory experiment, Mr. Toothacker desired to have a model built on a larger scale. This was finally accomplished, and today there exists as fine a model as may be found anywhere.

The model is made of cement and weighs about three hundred pounds. At one end is a rugged peak from which flows a small mountain stream. At the other end is the model volcano. This volcano produces a very realistic eruption, beginning with a rumble and then throwing up smoke, fire, and hot lava ash. The eruption is produced by heating certain crystals, the formula for which Mr. Toothacker will not disclose. The crystals become so hot that they explode and fly into the air exactly as do the rocks in a real volcano. At the base of the mountains is a geyser which erupts intermittently, every two or three minutes, shooting a stream of water high into the air. The geyser is also operated by a heating unit. Of special interest are the natural caves which are found in the side of the mountain. In them are iridescent crystals which were formed by the evaporation of concentrated solutions of various chemicals. In one cave are stalactites and stalagmites which are actually forming by themselves.

The art department deserves as much credit for the formation of the scenery as the science department deserves for the working parts. The lakes, roads, rivers, and caves add much to the realistic appearance of the model. The school should be proud to possess this model, the like of which, Mr. Toothacker believes, does not exist in the United States.

The Student Philosopher SHORT time ago, we were sitting in a car with some other fellows, having a "hull session." Gradually the conversation drifted to talk of success. Whenever we walk down the corridor, we see groups of students conversing. In every group there seem to he some that do all the talking and a few that appear to he lost in a world of thought. People in general are too much impressed by a person's outward appearance. If one would take the time and effort, he could find a great quantity of silver inside the exterior of mud and iron the social outcasts seem to have. The intelligence of the students in a high school is, of course, greatly varied.

N THE first place this ideal girl is formed according to my own taste, and though she isn't one who would be satisfactory to everyone, I believe that she will not leave very much to be desired.

I do not want her to be the bored, eophisticated type, and yet I'd like her to have a fair knowledge of what the signals are and not put out a red flag if I happen to come closer than twelve inches. She must not be too young, too uninformed, or too silly.

The Utopian Teacher ,..-,EACHERS, like other people, are human. One often expects to find a teacher perJ. feet and always ready to serve. Teachers are not allowed to be tired or "blow off steam," but always they are forced to put forth the perfect front.

To me, the vi11ion of an ideal teacher is mistily blended into that of a perfect friend. This imaginary teacher does not have to be pretty; in fact, it is better that she isn't. Good looks, with a touch of vanity, often lead a teacher to display herself as a bait for admiring looks.

The Utopian teacher has the subject she teaches well in hand and can answer clearly all reasonable questions that may arise in a student's mind. She is also well informed on current and school topics.

In class, she does not show favoritism, even though outside events may induce her to do so. She does not seek personal revenge on the class by giving them hard and unexpected tests. The ideal teacher will not smile graciously on one in class and "high hat" one when she passes him on the street.

We have all contributed our ideas and have listened to the opinions of authorities on this important topic. But please, no matter what has been said, if it is at all possible, financially and mentally, do go to college!

There are numerous reasons why young men should attend college. They are basically the wage earners of the world. They must go out into the world and work to earn enough to support themselves and their families. Without going to college a man can get a job and earn his bread, hut with the aid of a college education he has a better chance of earning a little jam for that same bread. But let's leave the men in favor of the girls.

Of course she's going to get married. It's the natural, human thing to do; when her chance comes, certainly she'll take it. And there is where the _college education comes. in. It is a security and a satisfaction for a woman to know that she has a means of earning her own living in case something should happen to her husband. It gives her a feeling of independence and just the right degree of that thing is a great boon to happiness. With a college education she is enabled to live a more rich and full life, and to appreciate the finer things in life which otherwise would have escaped her entirely.

Pet Peeves FTER a good deal of investigation we have reached the conclusion that almost every person, be he great or small, weak or strong, has a pet peeve. Of course, it is only normal that one person should have numerous dislikes, such as spinach, crooners, red nail polish, and people who crack their gum. Therefore, it is only normal that a pet peeve is cultivated.

Before pa88ing on to you a few peeves that have been told to us, let us confe88 that we also have a peeve. It is noisy people. When we say noisy people, we mean that certain kind that comes rushing up to a group of acquaintances in a public place, greets everyone loudly, starts talking in a boisterous voice, laughs, and cuts capers much to the chagrin of hie companions. In our opinion this kind of a person is society's worst menace.

We have discovered that peeves are as varied as the people who possess them. A few reticent people refused to confide in us, using either bashfulness or the fact that they had none as their excuse. As to the latter, we feel pretty sure they are trying to give us the impre88ion that they are some of those good-natured bodies with an easycome, easy-go disposition.

However, one of our victims seemed almost eager to make known the fact that in his opinion he considers girls who talk baby talk the leading peeve of all. We agree with him. There is nothing so irritating as to listen to a constant stream of affected lisping. We are in sympathy with him and only hope that he isn't one of those unlucky individuals who has had the misfortune of meeting too many girls of that kind.

question. She was a shy little thing and was apparently afraid of being overheard, for she lowered her voice and whispered softly in our ears.

"It's suspenders," she said with another quick glance around. "I just can't stand the sight of the things, especially striped ones."

At this we kept quiet, for we aren't in a position to involve ourselves, and we always say, "Everyone to his own taste. A peeve is a peeve, no matter who has it nor what it is."

MORE ABOUT GOLF The game of golf is, perhaps, the most widely played sport in the world. Young and old, men and women, rich and poor- all feel the urge to try their luck. This fact undoubtedly accounts for the tremendous increase in the sales of golfing manuals, books of rules, etc. After reading all this literature, however, I am thoroughly convinced that a very important factor is being overlooked. I refer to the gentle art of chili throwing.

I don't know of a golfer today that could give me the four fundamental rules of club throwing etiquette. Having made a comprehensive study of this phase of the game, I can truthfully say that no person can be absolutely proficient at the game without the mastery of this art.

Let us first consider stance. As in the actual hitting of the ball in the proper direction, stance determines the distance and direction of the throw. Any novice can heave a mashie twenty yards, but it takes real savoir-faire to throw one seventy yards and in the desired direction. Incidentally, special attention must be given to direction, as many a club-throwing enthusiast has, in a moment of ecstacy, thrown hie club in a water hazard by mistake. This error is costly as the water doesn't help the club any, and the caddie won't retrieve it for lees than a quarter.

Point No. 2 concerns the psychological moment to throw the club. Many a golfer has gypped himself out of a good gallery by being too impatient. A good throw reflects just as much credit on the participant as a long putt and for future reference, perhaps in the locker room, witneeses are eesential. If you must throw your club near the green, take special care that the greenskeeper is not in sight.

The third point, and perhaps the most important, deals with facial expre88ion. If you can't throw a chm with a straight face, don't throw it. Under no circumstances must you let a soul know you're under any emotional strain. At a recent club throwing contest at St. Andrews, T. Divot was disqualified for saying, "Oh, goody!" when he broke the world's record for the niblick throw. The face must hold an absolutely blank expre88ion, or be just a wee bit on the bored side.

Point No. 4 has to do with throwing a whole bag of clubs. The regulation bag should contain three wood clubs and seven irons for men, and two woods, five irons for women. There are as yet no set rules for bag throwUJ.g, as their dimensions vary a great deal. Merely take hold any way you can and let fly. •

In demonstrating the benefit of being a sterling bag thrower, let me call attention to the case of Mr. I. M. Ahasher. Mr. Ahasher says, "I never could seem to break one hundred and thirty. Then one day, I astounded my foursome by throwing a bag and a caddie one hundred and ten yards into a lake. From that moment on, I knew why I was created. I practice every day, and am now the envy of everybody in the club." Mr. Ahasher now holds the heavyweight bag throwing championship of the world.

to pull it out. Thus it was that we found ourselves reflecting on this subject of education, even against our will. It is quite apparent to most of us that the quotation above is all too idealistic. In such a broad assertion of the intrinsic values of education there are all too many implications that are hidden beneath the surface. Aren't we a hit too certain that our modern educational system always accomplishes its purpose? Take the case of the average young person for example. We wonder just how much modern educational methods are doing for us. Is it accomplishing its rather idealistic aims? We all know that to a great degree it isn't, hut where is the weakness in the system? The more we thought on the subject, the more apparent the answer became. The weakness is not in the system: it is in us! The accomplishment of the ideals of education depends upon how much imagination and conception is possessed by the individual exposed to our system. In other words he must possess certain attributes of mind and character in order to receive the greatest possible benefit. Curiosity, and a will to learn; these are such attributes. The aims of education are idealistic, its accomplishments not always so. Perhaps even those who benefit least from our democratic system of education become better citizens and more valuable members of society under its tutelage. Civic sense and good citizenship do amount to a great deal in our democracy. after all.

HE word note has several different meanings. One interpretation is, "to listen at,. tentively, or to show respect." Another is to make a summary of a speech. Some students are familiar with these meanings but fail to put their knowledge to any practical use.

The most common meaning of the word in a high school vocabulary is "a short letter." Defined as a short letter, the note plays an important part in high school life.

At least one note is passed between two persons in every clase.

Speech is the natural medium of communication, but when threatened with an hour after school, a student resorts to notes. The note is written on a small scrap of paper, wadded up, and passed to the receiver. All this is done very carefully, while the X-ray eyes of the teacher are turned away. But the instructor wasn't born yesterday. He is very likely to tell someone to go ahead and pase the note and get it over with.

The content of a note varies greatly. There is the one that asks for the answer to number seven during a test, and the one that carries a cartoon of the teacher. Then there's the one that is full of school gossip, or a description of the new hoy friend.

Still another, and probably the most famous, is the note written by the boy or girl in the stages of "puppy love". Its contents are a deep dark secret, and held sacred by the writer. This type of note is passed quickly and stuck in a -hook for future reading.

Then later, when the receiver is in a more private place, he scans the page eagerly for its meseage of affection.

"Mr. Waring, I'm sure our readers would enjoy knowing something of your personal life. Do you find much time to compose pieces yourself?" "~o, I have never done any real composing to speak of, although my brother, Tom, and other members of the hand have written quite a number of pieces."

"Do you do much of your own arranging?"

"Only insofar as I supervise the work of the arrangers. We have four or five experts who do most of the actual arranging after I've given them an idea of what is wanted."

"What is your favorite song?"

"This is a difficult question to ~nswer because songs rise and fall in popularity so rapidly. My favorite song of all time is Sleep; it is the one piece I have never grown tired of hearing. Of the last two years, I like best Smoke Gets In Your Eyes; I think With All My Heart expresses the sweetest thought of any song written during the past year."

"What are your favorite sports?"

"I enjoy watching baseball and especially football games. I play golf in the summer, squash in the winter, and a great deal of ping pong during all seasons. This, by the way, is a very strenuous game if played as it should he."

The Piper's Short Short George Meredith was the sort of a fellow whom everybody liked. When his friends needed anything, they didn't go to the hank- they went to George. The shirt off his back for his friends; that was George. Did I say was? I'm· getting ahead of my story. I had better start at the beginning.

George and Helen started their marital career by being very broke, hut very happy. She was his ideal; never scolded nor became unreasonable, and he was a good husband except for one small detail. George was, perhaps through some childhood incident or maybe some inherent fear of being trapped, afraid of choking or suffoca• tion. He was very particular about the things he ate, and this irritated Helen at times until she almost screamed. Laugh if you will, hut George never ate his morning egg without cutting it into pieces and examining it minutely. He had read somewhere of a man who had choked on a bit of eggshell which had lodged in his throat.

When the Meredithe dined out, the mere mention of fish on the menu would send a shiver down his spine. George had even checked the statistics in his morbid fear of this horrible death .

The younger set of which the happy couple were a part often invited them to weekend parties at their summer cottages. These trips were an occasion of great enjoyment to all hut George. There was no pleasure in swimming so far as he was concerned. Too many people drowned by suffocation.

After returning from one of these week-end trips late one Sunday night, the pair sat down to a light lunch, as the only things in the house, they found, were a can of beans and one of tuna. Helen served the beans to George and ate the tuna with a smile.

After finishing the lunch with evident relish, George became ill and Helen called the doctor, who ordered the emergency ambulance from a nearby hospital ....

* * * * Two internee were speaking in hushed tones just outside of the emergency room door. "What was that last one, another drowning case?" asked the first.

"No," replied the other. "Some guy named Meredith-ptomaine poison case.

Funny thing though, the doctor said that that guy's throat was twice the size of a normal guzzler; not much danger of that guy ever having choked to death."

Now Fred and his gang travel in a private railroad car, listeners eagerly await hia music from coast to coast and across the seas, and it is said that he collects a pay check of $12,000 each and every week. Not bad~ven for a banker's hoy.

LUCK Luck is a rather abstruse thing, somewhat of a superstitution. It is defined as a casual event or accident, fortune, either good or had, or success. A personal experience will serve as an illustration.

I was once invited to ride in a fellow's rumble seat, but because of circumstances which I cannot recall, I declined the offer. I followed this fellow in my own car and saw one of the most beautiful wrecks that I have ever witnessed. The rumble seat, in which I would have been riding, was a tangled mass. If I had been there, I would have assumed the appearance of so much hash or cubed steak. By a mere turn of fate I had been saved from a "lovely" death. That, dear reader, is what I call luck.

competition," he answered. "If, however, the boy is burned out, that is, over run in high school, he is often on the down grade when he reaches the University. We have found that almost all of our stars here have not been terribly highly touted in high school. It seems that the fellows who have had just enough training to keep them physically fit keep coming on and improve greatly in college, while the high school 'flash' is likely to have reached his capacity there, and be unable to sustain the pace in college. I think that your own Clayt Brelsford is the best example of this that one could find. He was trained just enough and keeps on coming along all the time."

"Over here," he added, "we try to keep them keen and always wanting to do more.

We find that by the Saturday meets they are always on edge and ready to go, while if we had let them do all they wanted, they might become stale."

"What about your own records in track?" we questioned.

"Well," he grinned modestly, "those were set a long while ago. The boys weren't so fast in those days, you know."

As a final query we asked concerning the effects of football on track men.

"As a rule, we don't have many men who duplicate these sports," he replied. "But it is quite harmful when they do, because it tends "to make them rigid and hard, when a track man must be relaxed and loose to be at his best. I used to train the football men until three years ago, and the muscle tension required is quite different. It used to take us weeks to get Willis Ward ready for track after he finished football. He was never so good just because of that," the coach said ruefully.

A couple of track candidates burst in and ended our conference. As we rose and thanked him for his time and information, he replied, "Don't thank me, boys, just send me a couple more Birmingham runners like these others and I'll he more than repaid for this."

Generosity HE finished the last typed page and ran her ink-besmirched hands through her S hair. Thus after a year of hard labor, was completed Stephanie Rimsky's first novel, Green Grows the Grass. She called to her author friend, Thalia Blye, "Thalia, I've fin. ished ! I've finished!"

Several months later Stephanie's book was still unpublished. She had no money to write her manuscript on paper acceptable to a publishing house or to secure a copyright. Thalia had read the book and assured Stephanie it would be a great 1mccess.

Thalia and Stephanie parted in the course of the following seven years. One day Stephanie opened a magazine to the current hook reviews. At the top of the page was a smiling picture of her friend, Thalia. She started to read the review under the picture. But no! This could not be! This was her book!

Stephanie located Thalia's apartment and called on her. When Thalia saw her, she looked rather frightened. Stephanie smiled at her and said, "I'm so happy that at least one of us has achieved success!"

The Chiseler HISELERS are of various assorted types. First, and in my opinion the worst, is C the cigarette "moocher". He may be found almost anywhere, and his usual greeting is, "Have ya got a weed?" Second is the ride beggar. He is always asking you to take him somewhere and has never been known to return the favor. Another despised type is the perpetual stag. He has never had a date and never plans to. He figures that he can save money and still have just as much fun as the poor "suckers" who bring the girls. A large group of chiselers is represented by the "big-shot" racketeers. This group is a study in itself and one which I will not discuss at this time. All in all, these people are a grasping, sponging lot. They are the lowest form of life to be found in society and are despised by all.

BORE A bore is that type of individual who makes a person open his mouth wide at regular intervals during an evening. He is the type who during a visit opens his mouth only to eat. Then, he may be the kind who helps keep the fuel bill down by constantly keeping the room full of hot air emerging from conversation about how many dates he has lined up for the same evening, how he simply hates his curly hair, or in other words, •'his truly" in general. He is the kind who would say the following poem and mean it.

BOOKWORM A bookworm is a mousey, reticent, meek, and inoffensive specimen of humanity. He generally wears large horn-rimmed glasses and looks as if when you spoke to him, he would crawl back into his shell. He has to he spoken to four times before he hears and answers only if you address him in a direct question. His answer (if he answers at all) is always uncivil. H you have brought upon yourself the ponderous task of entering into a new set of books of which the pages are tightly sealed, he is the one to call upon. He takes great delight in hearing the paper cutter opening new realms of enchantment for his book-hungry soul.

ALUMNI NOTES The University of Michigan has claimed a large number of our B. H. S. alumni.

John Parker, Ralph DuBois, Bob Harris, Harry and Clayton Brelsford, Jimmy Walker and Fred Schwarze are all members of Phi Kappa Si. Fred Cushing and Fred Boynton are Beta Theta Pi members. Don Parry is an Alpha Kappa Psi and Jack Mills chose Alpha Delta Phi. Roberta Chissus and Barbara Horton are members of Gamma Phi Beta, and Dorothy Ray is a Delta Delta Delta. Some of the other Baldwin grads at Michigan are: Victor Canever, Lloyd Tremper, Earl Wilson, Bennett Root and Bob Judson. Elizabeth White, Adelaide Ely, Mary Elizabeth Staley and Janet Peabody all think Michigan is a grand college. · Bob Bender, Don Donaldson, and John Wilson chose Michigan State. Carol Dwelley is an Alpha Phi at State, and Betty Sears is an Alpha Chi Omega. Elizabeth Adams and Bob Aldrich are at Albion.

Bob Vinton, Dean Beier, Scott Walker, Mildred White, and Mary Quinn are all freshmen at Dennison.

They say that after graduation a class splits up. This group certainly has. Mary Wibel is at Mt. Holyoke and Bill Wibel is marching around Culver. Jane Brede's choice was Hollins, and Dorothy Porritt is studying hard at National Park Seminary. Peg Allen is at Stephens and Jack Murphy is at the General Motors School of Technology.

Being Nice to Junior Junior is the son of Dad's boss, and when the Mr. and Mrs. pay us their frequent Sunday calls, he has to he entertained. My brother and sister always manage to he absent when the Joneses arrive and the job of acting as host to Junior falls to me.

The Joneses, full of noisy good humor, arrive never later than 10:30, the morning hour when I sleep soundest. The country air stimulates Junior's appetite, and judging from the meals his parents consume, theirs also.

Picture my having retired late the night before, urgently in need of sleep. My bedroom door flies noisily open, disclosing the beaming, confident face of little Junior.

"We're here," he shouts, as one assured of a hearty welcome.

"So I see!" I reply sleepily, trying to appear glad to see him. "My gosh! I think, 'Is there no privacy in this house?'"

He prods me. "Come on and get up. Come see our new car. It's much bigger than yours!"

To his astonishment my interest remains unaroused. "Why don't you go find Tom and tell him about it?" I say.

"I wanna play with the microscope," he says, totally ignoring my suggestion.

"You run downstairs while I get dressed, and I'll bring it to you when I come," I say.

"I want it now. I know where it is."

"Very well," I reply reluctantly, "but for Pete's sake don't break it."

Junior proceeds to enter the closet and for a few seconds I hear him rummaging among my possessions.

"Oh, here it is!" he shouts, simultaneously with a loud crash, the splintering of glass.

"Was that the microscope?" I utter weekly.

"I won't tell!" and he rushes wildly from the room.

I lie there mustering up courage to look in the closet at my dearest treasure in fragments on the floor, when another crash issues from the hall followed by loud bawls.

A feeling of guilt seizes me. Little Junior has taken the stair the hard way.

"He pushed me!" I hear him shriek. "He pushed me downstairs."

I get out of bed cautiously and peer down the stairway, and then, oh, kind recompense, little Junior is seated on the bottom step, ruefully rubbing a goose egg, half the size of a billiard ball. 'Mid a murmur of sympathy, four excited parents are administering cold water and smelling salts to the httle liar.

"Are you hurt, Junior?" I inquire with simulated concern.

"Yes, I'm hurt," he wails, "and it's all your fault."

Ignoring this repetition of the false charges, I seek the seclusion of my room. A few minutes later, having delayed as long as possible, I descend for breakfast attired in bathrobe and slippers. I take my accustomed seat at the table to enjoy a belated breakfast of pancakes and sausage.

The house is strangely tranquil. Evidently the guests have departed earlier than anticipated. With a feeling of great relief, I dawdle through my favorite breakfast and scan the morning paper. Still with that feeling of relief born of Junior's early departure, I attempt to rise only to find myself mysteriously retarded. As a parting shot, it seems Junior has thoroughly anointed my seat with maple syrup.

Annapolis and Randall Kidder is a gob in Uncle Sam's Navy. Vincent Holbel rises at the crack of dawn to deliver milk, and Charles Dean works at the Eccentric. Bud Botting and Jack Cummings work at Stroup's, and Harry Stark and Darby Taylor both have jobs in Detroit. Edith Babcock works at Edison's, and Betty Jane McCormick is a telephone operator. Harvey Whalen works at Green's, and Frank and Bob Savage both have jobs. Harriet Brelsford works in Detroit and is planning to enter Michigan State next fall.

Now let's see what some of our old friends are doing that have moved away. Bill Loud is in Newtonville High, at Newtonville, Ma88achusetts, and Jim Martindale is a senior at Lower Merion in Philadelphia. Bob Good and Kirk Martin go to Howe and John Bagby and Dick Royal are at Exeter. John Owens is at Tome, and Tom Chancellor goes to Lake Forest Military Academy. Bob Peebles is at Waterbury High in Connecticut. Margaret Scriven and Betty Dick are at St. Mary's Academy with Claire McGregor, and Louise Cobb is a senior at Penn Hall.

SCHOOL SPIRIT School spirit is a welling-up of emotions that brings tears to one's eyes when the school song is played or makes one feel proud and happy. It is that loyalty which makes one grieve not if one's team loses. It is one's team; that is sufficient reason to support it.

It is that indomitable something that makes one sit out in a drizzling rain to watch and encourage the football squad. It is that force which makes the ''timid soul" an aggressive leader, because it is for the good of the school. It is that which can say to the school, "Not my will but thine be done."
