Again it faded, and soft 1111011 the screen there fell A picture of the Homestead Old; Where lovers strolled and drccwwd and vowed.

Once more it shifted and ugciin I viewed A row of trees!

Bnt where was now the cottcigc white, The grassy lawn, the fiowers bright?

For lo, the victure I did sec Was of the school I now do lccw c.

Growing dim, then faint, then blank, The last from ont my sight receded, And once agciin o'er all the scene The pristine forest waved.

Editorial The desire of the Staff in composing this Baldwinian is that its readers shall find, in perusing its pages, memories which they wish to keep and cherish; memories which might otherwise be lost. We shall not leave it satisfactorily completed, however, until several things are given mention.

Our efforts have been to leave on these printed pages recollections that shall account for several years of pleasant times spent in absorbing our education-years in which our very youthful lives have developed into something more resembling the maturing dignity of young men and women-years of friendships-years of the delightful companionships of classmates, schoolmates, and teachers-the stuff of which memories are made. Such a little book to have so great a purpose as its responsibility!

We know it will be with grateful pleasure that we will recall the efforts of those who did their share to make possible this book, which shall be a delight to its owner and to the class which it represents.

This acknowledgment is what indeed is needed to complete our Annual; and, as is fitting and proper, should not end, but begin this account; for without the work and time spent by them, this book would not ever have had the courage to start, and would never have been assured the success we are confident it will attain.

We are indebted to the classes, all of which brought forward sales records worthy of commendation, especially the tenth grade, which finally bore the banner at the head.

Here, too, is the place we feel is proper for the expressions of our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Horwath for the time and effort she was always ready to give, and for the enthusiasm with which she rewarded each completed task; to Miss Taylor, Miss W estenfelder, and Mrs. Kidder goes equal gratitude.

The greatest reward of each senior who helped in the Annual work will be the reward of knowing he was given the privilege of taking a part in placing happy memories between two covers that they might never be lost to the seniors who are leaving their school and scattering to the four winds, each to find his own way to success, taking much enjoyment from his Baldwinian.

History Of The Senior Class Slowly, slowly, has it come to an end, our high school career.

Slowly, but all too fast, have the days terminated and are now ready to bloom. As a shipwrecked sailor who, finding each day, more and new trials and tests and barriers, longs, when at last rescued, to embark once again on the sea and hazard such tests anew; so, too, we leave, feeling a pang of regret at leaving our high school days behind; days, all of which were not pleasant, but of which all have played an important part in moulding our future lives. Let us look back over the six years which we have spent and see if our time has been worthily used.

Six years ago we entered the Baldwin High School, small, frightened, bashful; but nevertheless with considerable self importance because we no longer would say, "Our teacher," but "Our teachers." That self importance was augmented a great deal when we met together and chose our officers and advisors. The seventh grade was marked with many parties and it was at these affairs that our friendships were started which made it possible for us to go through high school together as a class and to accomplish the things we have accomplished.

Our next year was spent in winning academic honors and was remarkably successful in this matter. Our social functions were not neglected for we met frequently at parties. On the whole it was a year well spent.

And now! what joy is there greater than becoming a freshman? At last we were in a position to be recognized even by the upper classmen, and we felt very proud in being called the infants. Due to the able guidance of Miss Fearron, Miss Kriekard and Mr. McBain, and of the class officers, this year gave us a firm foothold on the road to fame. We started things moving by winning the tug-of-war. Looking back now we feel that no other event in our freshman year aided more in developing school and class spirit than this one did. Well, a freshman year is always full of action and ours was no exception. Then, too, there was the Freshman Reception which was indeed a splendid party.

No matter how much we liked our freshman year it was necessary that we advance and so the following September found us Lord Sophomores, renowned in fables and story-books, and the bogey-man of the freshmen; perhaps we were too busy in building the best class in the Baldwin High School or else we took compassion on them, for they endured no trouble of our making. During this year many of our members proved their worth on the athletic field, many more proved their ability along academic lines, and the whole class proved its comradeship and good feeling in the outdoor events which were so numerous that year. It is to Miss Walker, Miss Kriekard and Mr. Gee that we owe the success and achievements of that year.

And now the sequence of time brings us to one of the most successful years in the history of our class. As juniors the things we did were manifold and startling. Our athletic members, and there are many of them, exhibited sportsmanship and fight second only to that shown by them in the senior year. Debating and oratory claimed a high percentage of the juniors and the Bond Staff was composed of our classmates. The class during this year sponsored several shows, all of which were successful to a greater or less degree. Due to the efforts of Miss Walker and Mrs. Cook, the Junior Play was a success from both the (Continued on Page 120)

The Class Prophecy As I was sitting in an easy chair on a transcontinental air liner smoking and reading the Saturday Evening Post, I suddenly heard a crash. Naturally wondering, I, along with my fellow passengers, rushed to the Captain to inquire about the accident.

In a few minutes we were told all, that a propeller had been lost and that it would be necessary to make a forced landing. Looking out the window I perceived that we were approaching a thriving city. I saw a huge building being erected, and as we skimmed over it I saw in flaring letters five feet high, the sign "Guthrie & Clark, Construction Engineers."

"Ah," I mused, "the names have a familiar twang to them. Did I not know a person named Guthrie and one named Clark? Why, yes, Al Guthrie was president of the class and Les Clark was his perpetual side kick!"

The plane settled to rest in a field outside the city. Stepping to the ground, I perceived a tall lanky figure approaching, a figure with a vaguely familiar air about it. "Welcome to the city of Birmingham," it shouted, "and allow me to introduce myself: I am Emerson N. Gravlin, editor of the 'Birmingham Daily Screwdriver.' Noticing your accident I came to get a scoop on it. But, you, you look familiar; you look like a person with whom I had many merry times in Virgil Class.''

"Stop," cried I, " 'Tis enough, you know me. But in truth, if this be Birmingham, where is that memory of my long lost youth, the M. E. Church?"

"Did you notice that great skyscraper being erected by Guthrie & Clark?" asked Emerson. "That stands on the site of the old church.

But come, there are several old grads in town; we shall visit them.''

So saying he escorted me to his car and ordered the chauffeur to drive to the Fiasco Manufacturing Company. "We are going to see Jack Ali," he said. "Jack always did invent useless machines, and now his life long ambition is realized. Say, by the way, have you heard of Walnie Kliewer? He has mounted to the dizziest heights of glory as a renowned violinist."

The machine pulled to a stop in front of a large factory. We were met at the door by Jack Ali. He joyfully conducted us through his factory, showing us many wonderful machines whose only defect was they wouldn't work.

Leaving the Fiasco Manufacturing Company we entered the car and were conveyed down Woodward Avenue. We passed a big hotel.

"That," said Emerson, "is the latest masterpiece of Bill Plotkin; he is following in his father's footsteps. And Bob Cromie has attained his ambition, he runs the elevator in Bill's hotel.''

We passed a large theater. "That," said Emerson, "is operated jointly by Carl Schwarze and Rossman Smith; their two main attractions are Margaret (Spaghetti) Ross and Kathryn Butler. Spaghetti lectures on how to remain a flapper at sixty, and Kathryn is their Premiere Danseuse. Poor girl, she broke a leg the other day, trying to do a new tango. Birmingham," continued Emerson, "has been favored by the installation of a beauty parlor operated by Mildred Roode, Zella Gill, and Bernice Haddrill. Mable Cook and Irene Hanley do a sort of a song dance act there, to relieve the sufferings of those martyrs enduring a permanent wave.

"Say, Chuck Taylor has gone in for professional football. Poor boy, the lure of gold o'erpowered him. Pat Austin is a confirmed hero

worshipper; she still jumps every time she hears a 'bell.'

"You know how Miss Hickox used to say that some members of our civics class would be elected President of the United States? Well, Chuck Latham has made a good start; he was just elected president of Birmingham."

Just then I heard a piercing whistle, the car stopped and a big fat traffic cop came rushing out. "Where ja think you're goin'?" he thundered. "This is a city, not a burg. If you can't obey the laws I'll have to lock you up."

"Why, Clifford Currin," admonished Emerson, "would you speak like that to me?"

"Oh, excuse me," said Cliff, "I have to get back to my station."

Emerson continued, "Fanny Giles runs the Home for the Deaf and Dumb. The poor inmates can't hear her talk and have no causes for complaint. Hazel Black and Helen Savage are on a vaudeville team; they present a little skit entitled, 'Is Hazel Black?' or 'Is Helen Savage?'

It's a knockout. Johnny Parks and Preston Parks are both professors of agriculture at the University of Michigan.

"Birmingham had a great trial a short while ago," continued Emerson. "That insidious society crook, 'Sticky Fingered' Don Bell, alias 'Dan the Dip,' has been apprehended. Ah, I got a great scoop from that case.

"We have an author among us, ioo. Hilda Bowden has just written two more verses to 'God Save the King.' Zella Andrews is making great progress as a poetess; her works are on sale at almost every book store.

"Paul Kurth has taken over Huston's Hardware and has established a large department store.

"Bob Townend is foreman of ihe print shop on my paper, the 'Daily Screwdriver,' " Emerson spoke on. "I went in to a dancing school the other day just to look over the conditions and who do you think were the teachers'! Ernie Mann and Ernie Shave.

"Dorothy McClelland has taken over the feed store, only she has the grain powdered into dusi. She sells it to Jack Ali who is experimenting on a machine which runs on dust.

"Elmer Long is a well established architect; he draws all the plans for the Guthrie & Clark Construction Company.

"George Schorr is the leading trumpeter in the orchestra of the theater operated by Carl Schwarze and Rossman Smith.

"Fenton Westerby has been appointed head janitor at B. H. S. and seems to be making good.

"Joe Donnelly has developed into a wonderful cynic; every time I write an editorial I get several letters from Joe telling me how terrible it is.

"Mary Curry and Oakel Morse are regular reformers; they're against tobacco and alcohol in any form. I give them space in the paper every day and you should read some of their articles.

"Frances Looney has risen to the position of choir leader in the Methodist Church. Perseverance always wins.

"Jeanette Brown is still looking for her millionaire-he hasn't come yet.

"I have engaged Helen Shepherd to draw all the sketches for my paper; believe me, she is some artist.

To the Senior class of 1927, we bequeath our deficiency of dignity and trustworthiness (according to Miss Boone) and those unprecedented achievements in scholastic, athletic, and dramatic spheres of activity which we have attained.

To Elizabeth Bray, Zella Andrews reluctantly, very reluctantly in fact, leaves her precious Gen. Murray Ross .

To Master William (Tiny) Dawson, William Plotkin bequeaths his magnificent and entertaining falsetto voice.

To Garnet Stell is bequeathed, with all due affection from a farmer to a farmerette, a good portion of Clifford Currin's excessive width.

To Robert McLaughlin, Oakel Morse bequeaths her solemn demeanor and bearing.

To the senior class president of 927, Al Guthrie's executive and successful administrative ability.

To Fred Whittlesey, Chuck Taylor's hasty temper which ought to equalize Fred's mild temperament.

To the junior class, since she will shortly have no further use for it, Frances Looney bequeaths her much heralded surname.

To Lawrence Smith, Margaret Edgar wills her dilapidated, antiquated, fumigated Dodge barouche, hoping that it will prove to be to him as valuable an alibi for tardiness as it has for her.

To Thelma Flower, Joseph Donnelly leaves his sophisticated aloofness.

To Alice Upward, Mary Lammert wills a portion of her excessive vertical dimension, thus making it unnecessary for her to stand on a soap box to kick a duck in the instep.

To anybody, Ernest Shave leaves, with regret, his inveterate position in Mrs. Horwath's English class, and what little remains of the jolly feud.

To Raymond Chatfield, Walter Guthrie bequeaths his contumacious obstinacy, that he may argue as convincingly as "Bud" has.

To Ringling Bros., Barnum and Bailey Combined Shows, Mable Cook magnanimously bequeaths several pieces of her wardrobe, trusting that they will prove of sufficient dimensions to be used as tents.

To George Winborn, Preston Parks' professorship in Birmingham's foremost school of antiseptic dancing.

To Virginia Taylor, Walnie Kliewer consigns his marvelous musical talent, which has surpassed Nero's, Kriesler's and Mellie Dunham's accomplishments on the fiddle.

To Mr. Andrew Gump, Mary Curry bequeaths with unparalleled generosity one of her beautiful and comely chins.

To Arthur Kitchen, Carl Schwarze leaves that paternal precaution with which he has miraculously kept us out of mischief and earned for himself the nomenclature of "Grandpa."

To William Pollock, Helen Shepherd's artistic aptitude, trusting that his cartoons and her commercial art will harmonize.

To Miss Florence Ackerly, Emerson N. Gravlin entrusts his sarcasm, which has proved a valuable asset in his ironical assaults against his teachers and fellow students.

To Loretta Porritt, John Parks leaves his daily milk route, supposing that it will at least, through the exercise provided therein, permit her to maintain her present avoirdupois.

To any Englishman, Hilda Bowden bequeaths her loyalty to His Majesty, King George V, and to His Royal Highness, Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David Windsor of Wales.

To Elizabeth Geisel Mildred Roode's masculine tonsorial achievement, which embellished her cranium and represented our greatest proximity to utter hirsute devastation.

Hark Ye! To the glorious past and present of the "Gay Young Juniors"!

To give a complete history of the class of 1927 would only impose upon the patience and forbearance of my hearers, and also might disclose to the public ear, certain wonderful and carefully guarded secrets of the past. Realizing this, I have endeavored to relate in the briefest manner possible, the most important events of our school career.

Life in the primary grades was made both interesting and happy for us. But when we entered B. H. S., we could not see into the future; we little realized the knowledge we could gain, the happiness we were to find, or the character we would build. Not until we reached high school and were greatly honored at the Freshman Reception and encountered the terrible subjects of algebra and Latin, did our school troubles become a reality.

The next year we entered as gay young sophomores and we, in our turn, found enjoyment at the expense of the poor "Freshies." We

marched bravely forth with Caesar and his legions into Gaul, and over the Alps with Hannibal.

The next title of honor awaiting us was that of "Junior," we, the happy-go-lucky jolly juniors. Our athletes have made very commendable showings, for we have many representatives on the teams. There has not been much activity in our class this year, as we have been pounding away at our studies and trying to make the teachers think we know something whether we do or not. The Junior Play was a sumptuous affair with villians en' fights en' everything. Next comes the most pleasant time of the year, the excitement of the one great event, that of the Junior-Senior banquet. It, of course, will prove to be another feather in our hat after the "Dignified Seniors" have seen the handsome decorations and "nifty" programs and have disposed of our bounteous banquet.

Dearest Betty, Perhaps you know that I've been here for the past week visiting some of our old friends and dear old B. H. S. I wish you were with me.

Don't you get awfully lonesome in London? How does it feel being a Countess? Give the dear Count my love.

Oh, I'm just bursting with news. I can hardly wait to get it all out.

As my train pulled into the beautiful Grand Trunk Station I noticed it was gorgeously draped with flags and bunting, and it was packed with people. I wondered what was to take place. I was soon to find out, for just then another train pulled in and amid much cheering and clapping two exquisitely dressed personages alighted from the train.

I pushed my way through the crowd to get a better view and was greatly surprised to find they were none other than Maxine Jewell, a famous movie star, and Carp Hewitt, her business manager. Outside of business hours :;he does the managing, Carp said. They were awfully glad to see me and we decided to go sight seeing together. Carp hailed a taxi and the .driver proved to be our old classmate, Johnnie Palmer.

Ever since the Junior Play he has taken to taxi driving. He said he'd drive us around while we were here if we wanted him to. He also proved to be a valuable source of information. He told us how By Winborn had worked himself up from office boy and was now editor of the Birmingham Eccentric and drawer of cartoons in his spare time. Ivy Haack is radio announcer for station vV. 0. W. which has exclusive rights for broadcasting Liz Luscombe, the retired grand opera star. I know you're anxious to know about Dave. He's on the All-American Basket Ball Team. He's engaged to a girl in New York. I can't imagine it. He used to be so bashful.

When we were riding along this afternoon a huge car of foreign make passed us. The occupants were Gin Taylor and "E" Thompson, her lawyer. Johnnie said she was going to court. She's suing for (Continuecl on Page 136)

'fhe Class of Nineteen Twenty--Eight Long ago in the seventh grade a few of our members belonged to organizations, Radio Club, Junior Chorus and Natural Science Club.

We also had a member on the Baldwinian staff. The eighth grade was similar except for our better knowledge of the school. However, this history really starts the Class of 1928 entering its freshman year. That year was a big one. We had members in the Radio Club, N. S. ., and Hi-Y and we contributed much to the Baldwinian. Our turn out for teams was large. We had one member on the baseball team, one on the second team in football, two on the track team and two or three on the second in basket-ball. Our girls proved to be athletes, too, for there were four of them on the second team in basket-ball and one on the first team.

Soon after this illustrious class started its high school subjects, a class meeting was held; officers were elected, advisors were chosen, and an organization started that fate had decreed to struggle through four long years of picking up knowledge here and there-mostly there.

A few parties were held which were enjoyed by all; and our class followed the time honored custom by winning the Tug of War. After a very successful Freshman Pageant, at which all of the members of the class were presented with handsome diplomas which graduated us to front seats in the Senior Session Room, ,ve started the second year of our illustrious career as superior sophomores. In addition to the organizations of our freshman year we have members of the class in the "Varsity Club ."

Sophomores always make up a good part of the Honor Roll and we have turned out candidates for debating teams. We have possession of a silk banner which we won for selling annuals; and at the "Field Day" the sophomores "did themselves proud." We have plenty of "Fight" and school spirit and are not afraid to show it.

This year we sta1'ted our ""\V"ashington Group," and we now have one of the best groups in the high school. We have earned much money and are still "going strong."

We hope to have more good times and to make more than a passing. impression upon the large and everknowing face of old B. H. S. MORGAN CARTER, GEORGE COONEY.

'The Baldwin Rough Riders CHAPTER ONE

On Christmas Eve, in the year 1937, Almon Ryder, a wealthy El Cajon rancher, was sitting by his fireside in the rambling ranch house of the Triangle R. His thoughts wandered back over the many years that had passed since his high school days at old Baldwin High, and he seemed to see his old classmates enjoying the hospitality of his roomy abode.

The Triangle R covered an area of a hundred and fifty thousand acres of spacious ranchland . The house itself was a low, white rambling structure, surrounded by a white picket fence; while the bunkhouses and corrals lay to the northeast. A meandering road wound its way past the house, over the mountains and into El Cajon. The landscape was set off by great mountains which rose majestically in the background.

The fire was dying out and Almon had been sitting there, unconscious of time, thinking of happy days at B. H. S. He arose from his chair, determined that before another year should pass he would see his friends. They should come to the Triangle R !

With the coming of the New Year he started his plans: He decided that his friends should come during the month of May; and soon after his supplies came from Los Angeles, and then the real task began.

At the end of a week the invitations were ready to be sent. On Saturday afternoon Al saddled his favorite horse "Black Star" and rode toward El Cajon. Arriving there, he jumped from his horse and strode, with jangling spurs, into the postoffice. A few town loafers standing nearby, heard him say in a commanding voice, "Please see that these are mailed immediately!"

The postmaster looked up in surprise, for this was the largest bunch of mail that had ever gone out of El Cajon at one time!

CHAPTER TWO

After a few weeks, letters began to arrive. The postmaster was more surprised than ever! Among the first were those from Cornelia Adrian, a missionary in Honolulu, who stated that she could be spared from her untiring work; Prof. Roger Toothacker, thinking it would help his work immen"ely, accepted the invitation. Another, which took Al quite by surprise, was postmarked Chicago; upon opening it, he learned that Katie Brown and her wealthy fiance would come on their honeymoon! Other missives like these came daily. By the incoming mail Al felt assured that his friends would arrive about the first week of May, and accordingly he began making new arrangements at the Triangle R. One bright morning in the latter part of March, Almon decided to break the news to his Major Domo, Ambert Peterson. The sun shone brightly as Al walked down the path to the corrals. "I wonder how Pete will take it," he thought as he drew nearer. He found Pete a little later with his horse, ''Bright Eyes." "Heh, Pete, come here a minute!"

"All right, Boss."

As Pete came nearer Al saw that he ,vas thinking.

"What's the matter, old top'? You iook worried."

"Yes, there is something the matter around here."

"Let me hear aLout it, won't you?" questioned Al. ''Well, things have been going sort of funny around here lately; lots of moving, reairanging the house and bunks, with new furniture coming and all the things being changed. It's caused lots of commotion among the boys. We want to know what's up!"

A twinkle had come into Al's eyes as he watched his friend . .. Well, well, Pete! So you've been wondering, too," laughed he.

Pete looked surprised as he said, "Yes, I have."

"I suppose I should have told you sooner, but I thought I'd surprise you. The old gang of '28 is coming out here!"

CHAPTER THREE

It was the first week of May. On the early train arrived Bid Potter, a bathing beauty at Atlantic City; Georgie Cooney, a newspaper reporter for the New York Herald; Slim Gravlin, a gym teacher in Hookerville, Massachusetts; Bill Pollock, a world known artist; Peg Strand, the "Apple Queen of Michigan"; Bill Spence, the world famous harmonica player, who received his education from E. M. Tilton at B. H. S. As they were waiting on the platform a tall, good-looking man appeared in the doorway of the station. It was Al! Amid exclamations and laughter, he piled them all in a big buckboard and started for the Triangle R. They had gone about three miles when shots were heard!

"I just know we're all going to be 'scalloped' by those Indians! Get down, girls! Hide your valuables!" ~ried Peg. The "Indians" drew nearer and the shots louder! They surrounded the wagon and to the surprise of everyone, they beheld not Indians, but Al's cowboys!

"By cracky ! If it isn't Shorty Woodard, himself," shouted Bill Pollock after a minute.

The "Indians" turned out to be Earl Shultz, Nick Carter, Dave Bell, Pres Green, Tom Townend, Johnny Parks, and George Winborn.

The Great Orchard There is a grei;it orchard through which we pass. That orchard was first planted in our primary years and the trees were saplings in our youth. We watched them grow bit by bit, unconscious that our very contact with them was the progress and growth of our minds.

In this orchard are the trees of life, of classic knowledge and trees of social life. "\iVhen we first entered upon this area we inhaled the sweet aroma from the blossoms of life. We passed down through the paths, never retracing our steps. We lingered by the row of knowledge and tempted by the luscious fruit partook, sometimes, of the ones most appealing, but not of those which had the eternal quality of solid learning.

We must pass out of this orchard as we have gone into it, but before our destination is reached we must taste of the fruit of adversity and s1:1bsist upon the fruit of experience.

Will you upon gazing back upon that broad expanse be able to feel that you have gotten the best out of life and the most of education?

9--A Class History As we, the ninth grade, look backward and see Lilly Baldwin, Roderick Cox, David Doherty, George Evans, Beatrice Green, Robert Hatch, Carl Hilty, Irene Johnson, Margaret Johnson, Katherine McCutcheon Ray Mix, Roberta Meeker, Alfred Myers, Alfred Pote, John Savage, Ruth Stahl, Dorothy Peck, Bill Spreen, Harry Weller, Bertha Wendt and Mary Jane Wilson all standing in a line we recognize them to be ourselves as we stood with passing slips ready to enter Baldwin High School.

We filled the seventh grade seats in February, 1923, with Mrs. Waterman as session room teacher and Miss Grey, Miss Wilson and Miss Grattan as advi!-ors. VVe gave chapels and had parties. Maud Curry and Jack Ogden .joined in the seventh grade to help us enjoy our happy times.

We completed the seventh grade and entered the eighth with Miss Ackerly as our advisor. We celebrated parties and a sleigh ride, afterwards going to the Community House to eat. Jane Porter and Elmer Root came in for the good times we had in arithmetic class, the party at Ruth Stahl's and at the Community House. Oh, how we worked for the "Knights and Ladies of the Round Table!"

Then we held our heads higher and proudly walked up to Miss

Peacock's nine B session room. Here Lawrence Johnstone, Elton Buck, and Hazel Ward entered the class and here we mastered Latin and algebra.

But the highest goal that we have reached is the nine A which we are duly celebrating with Miss Packard as our advisor. Clark Smith, Irene Wilkinson and Robert Voss joined us this year. We had a party in the lower hall with dancing, hot dogs, and hot chocolate and as our orchestra the "Ninth Grade Special."

Fresh1nan Constitution We, the students of the freshman class, in order to form a more perfect class, establish justice, insure class room tranquillity, provide for the exams and lessons, promote delightful parties and dances, and secure the blessing of the faculty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the "Freshman Class" of the "Baldwin High School" of Birmingham.

ARTICLE I SECTION I

The officers shall be composed of a president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. Duties of the former may be received from the faculty advisors.

SECTION II

The class must be composed of liberal students who will not kick at losing two or four bits, once in awhile, for a party.

SECTION III

Each member must be over four years of age before he can hold the highly responsible position of voting in the class polls.

SECTION IV

The officers must be good friends of the faculty and janitors as well as Mr. Randall, in order to secure party permits.

SECTION V

The aforesaid officers must not borrow the class money for candy or sodas. (The penalty is a dark and guilty conscience.)

ARTICLE II SECTION I

Gate crashers are sentenced to pay one dollar and bring a fair lady or a manly gentleman friend before they are allowed to participate in parties.

SECTION II

Our faculty advisors should be good looking as well as useful.

(They must be over sixteen.)

SECTION III

Our officers must be stern and bashful so their decisive decisions will not be moved by the beautiful faces and words of fairer female sex.

SECTION IV

Class dues will soon have to be a dime because our debtors begrudge every quarter.

SECTION V

We hereby state that all teachers and students are created equally bright; therefore, faculty of the aforesaid school shall not practice tyranny on the smaller members of the aforesaid class.

A History of the Class of 1926 Coming over from the Hill School, where we were under the supervision of three teachers and a principal, to whom we looked in awe, we took our places in the Junior High Session Room where one teacher was in charge of about one hundred and seventy-five pupils. My! What a relief it was, and what a good time we had! Of course, we though.t we were the whole thing. Most of the time not spent in recitations was utilized in going to and from the library, passing a few dainty refreshments to our neighbors and discussing current events, not political or literary ones, by the way. At length the year came to a close and the long vacation was spent in recuperating from our hard year's work.

Soon September rolled around and again we assembled in the same room. A new teacher was on the job. Stately and grand she towered before us. What a hard first day! We were so worn out, you would have thought we had never had any vacation at all, for when four o'clock came around most of our names had been taken for some misdemeanor which we had unwittingly committed during the day. We were all kept after school and given many admonitions; but this being our first offense, we were soon allowed to go home. The next day we started in much as on the previous day and by night so many names were taken that the monitor system started. There were monitors for everything; they had one to report the bad pupil, and another to report said monitor if he didn't report the pupil. Not one thing was overlooked. We sat very erect in our seats, not daring to look at our n~ighbor, for fear he might be a monitor. In spite of this, every night saw some of us with pen and paper, writing down a few (?) of the things we must not do. To overcome our unruly spirits and to bring out the best that was in us, the "Knights and Ladies" was formed, which was founded on the standard of Service, Character and Scholarship. With this aim in view, our room eventually became known as the best conducted room in the school.

The following year, we became not freshies, but freshmen, and we challenge any sophomore, junior or senior, to have any aspirations beyond our reach.

8--B Class History At the opening day of school there was noise and excitement everywhere, but soon everything was running smoothly. During the first five weeks we had the annual masquerade and Mr. Hatt claimed that it was the best ever given.

After a time came the announcement of "Hobo Day." I don't remember who won the prizes, but there were some of the oddest looking hobo costumes that any of us had ever seen. We couldn't take many pictures, not because we didn't want to, but because there was no sun and it looked as if it were going to rain any minute.

We had our five weeks' exams and almost everybody got through.

The next thing of importance was the Eighth Grade Party that took place in the Community House. \Ve had doughnuts, games, dancing, and cider, and everyone enjoyed a good time.

Then came another five weeks' test followed by the football dance.

There was nothing more for some time; then as Christmas neared, the Junior Session Room gave a Christmas party. All the teachers dressed as children and the real boys and girls acted as sponsors for the party. We had a stage entertainment representing an old-fashioned school room. Mr. Vliet cut up considerably causing all the actors to laugh. There were several side-shows that furnished amusement, too. tly that time the football season was over and the basket-ball season started, and there were always plenty of us at the games to cheer the players on.

Then the time came for our final examinations. Some of us were pretty well ttustered, but the majority came through all right. We are now 10oking forward (some with pleasure and some in horror, most of us in pleasure) to another year.

GORDON CHAMBERLIN.

Heard On The Telephone "Hello, is this Doris Hoffman?" "*!**!*--Plop." 0 ! that was that funny Chinaman that answered.

I guess he doesn't know that his rings are three long and two short because he answers the phone every time it rings!

"One long, three short- 0 ! that's Drury's-I've got it, I guess I'll listen in, Sh-sh-" Then on the other line someone spoke and said, "Hello, is Laura there?"

"Yes, she is, just one minute, please."

"Hello, this is Laura speaking.

"So I notice. Say, have you your class history?"

"Say, who is this?"

"Oh! this is Dorothy Belle Kist."

"Oh, yes. Why, how stupid of you, Dorothy. Don't you remember September 7, 1924, we all came back and were full of vacation, and we were put into the 8-B and we all thought we were so smart?"

"Oh! yes. Then we fixed our schedules all alike and it caused so much trouble!"

"But, Dorothy, how could you forget? You know the time we had our class meeting and we chose Miss Graves and our old pal, "Miss Rip," and ME, secretary and treasurer. Betty Brown, vice-president; my bea-er-a-1-I mean they chose Jimmy Winborn for president."

"Yes, that's all you think of. Remember when 'Hobo Day' came we looked like a bunch of dead roosters after our heads had been cut off, and there were prizes for the funniest, too. First prize was one package of gum for best boy or funniest, and the same for the funniest girl; two sticks for second best and one stick for third best, etc."

"Then we went to the Freshman reception and had oodles of fun; they had prizes for the funniest best boy, and best girl.

"Yes, yes, that was a lot of fun."

"Listen, Laura, don't forget to say, or I mean tell about the Hardtime party when we all dressed like hard-timers and went to the Community House and to our surprise we found it all decorated up with newspaper curtains, etc. Then we had dances with victrola music and we played winkum and so many other things. 0 ! and they fined me (Continued on Page 116)

7--A Class History We left our homes in the far East to make a long pilgrimage to the high and mighty man "Wisdom" at his castle Baldwin.

We soon were wandering among the rooms of the great castle, peeping in here and there and gazing at many wonderful things.

We soon settled down, however, and were working with a will when "Giant Five Weeks" came among us. Then there were terrible times and many of our class mates were caught. He soon was gone again and all went well for many weeks. Next time he came we, remembering our experience, were not so helpless before the giant's attacks and few were caught.

We then elected our officers to guide us safely on our journeyDoris Hoffman, President; James Winborn, vice-president; Esther Rainey, treasurer; Betty Brown, secretary. They were chosen well and guided us safely through many perils.

Something then seemed to warn us that the giant was to reappear and fewer still were caught by this raid.

The next weeks dragged slowly and again the giant appeared and made his last terrible attack. Many mates were crippled to be held prisoners for another year. Those who escaped were saved by our good and patient advisors, Miss Reh and Mr. Crull.

We started in again, those who had been caught by the giant staying behind. We ethers had advanced a step on the castle retinue and were called fullfledged "Seven A's." However, our old enemy the giant, put in his appearance, catching many class mates.

We again elected officers: Thomas Martindale, president; Virginia Hugg, vice-president; Stoddard White, secretary-treasurer.

A huge wiener roast was planned and carried through nicely and the boys thought it a success on account of the cider.

Once again the giant hit and made many people sore and stiff in more ways than one. Twice more he struck, each time harder than the last, people being struck down for another stay in the same class, while the majority went on to try and advance another step in Baldwin Castle.

HAROLD GILES.

In The Forest Of Wisdom Two wise men were walking one day in the Forest of Wisdom. All around them were Book Trees with shiny new books hanging from their branches. On the tall bushes were hung countless A's and B's. While on the ivy which clung to the oaks hung the C's. On the low creeping vines under which lived the insect grew the few D's and F's.

At last one wise man broke the silence by saying, "Let's hie ourselves to Oracle Hornback to ask her who shall next come to this forest."

When they reached a certain tall rock in the forest they found the Oracle sitting with chin in hands.

They approached her, saying, "Oh, Mistress Hornback, tell us about those who shall next invade this forest?"

She spoke.

"From the different schools comes a class of bright faced boys and girls who shall hold their heads high and pluck the A's and B's. While others shall be satisfied with C's. Still others will stumble over D's and F's.

"Around those who gather in the A's and B's shall spring an organization called the Round Table with its knights and ladies. The fortunate shall penetrate into the Inner Circle and wear a shining badge for their deeds.

"From the group I see some who shall rise up to become leaders. A certain Doris Hoffman is to be president, her helper will be James Winborn. The caretaker of the money and the recorder of deeds in the class will be Esther Rainey. That is all now. I am tired; come another day."

Time has elapsed. The 7th graders wander in the Forest of Wisdom.

Acquiring some of the Wisdom they decide that "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." So a picnic is given June thirteenth, nineteen hundred and twenty-five.

Meanwhile summer arrived. The 7B's trooped home, and returned in the fall as 7 A's. Immediately they elected for their leader Thomas (Continued on Pcige 132)

The Seven B History Story History, as you all know, is the record of all important events, and in this case will cover the wonderful and interesting times· we've had in our class of 7B. There have been unpleasant moments to be sure, but the good times have more than outweighed them. There have been election of officers, important duties and rules to be enacted; but the parties we've had, have of course held the truly big moments.

The first as I recall was a masquerade; second, a Hobo day, in which Lucile Lowman and John Shepherd held particular honors; the third was the much planned Hallowe'en party where cornstalks and weird decorations prevailed. At last came the big Xmas affair, when time really turned backward for an evening and made our stern and commanding teachers mere children, with us as their protecting and much dressed-up parents. There were votes for the best and worst costumes, but to me every one was a prize.

Many other happy times have been spent and altogether they make up a pleasant memory for our class of Seven B. VIRGINIA REUTTER.

The Year As Seven--B' s

.

Oh! what a dark and dismal morning to be writing all the joys of our old class 7B. It ought to be a bright shining day to bring back all the pleasant memories.

We all felt pretty big to be coming over to the high school, but the feeling soon passed away when we found ourselves in the large session room and a scared sort of feeling passed over us as we gazed on new and strange faces.

After many odd adventures we soon quieted down and set to work; "What a relief" all the teachers sighed.

We elected our officers, which came out Barbara Drury, president; Betty Neal, vice-president; Morris Winborn, secretary; we were all very pleased with our officers.

Days rolled by and we began to plan for the Masquerade party. I went costumed as a gypsy. It was a grand success, and we spent a very delightful evening.

But soon after a blur seemed to swoop down upon us all. It was exams. But they were not to hinder our good times, as they disappeared almost as soon as they had come.

But now something new was coming up, "Hobo Day"; it was very funny to see all the different costumes. Lucile Lowman and John Shepherd won the prizes for the funniest costumes.

Days came and days went, each bringing some new experience to us.

But what is that golden cloud appearing in the distance'! Why, it is none other than the football dance. For the next week all that could be heard was, "What are you going to wear?" "How long can you stay?" Even the birds seemed to know all about it. At last the golden night arrived adorned in brilliant colors, but there is always something to spoil everything, for it was raining just as hard as it could, but we all went just the same as if the rain had stayed home in bed. We were having glorious dances when I saw Daddy, who had come to take me home. It seemed as if I had only stayed a minute, but I soon found out how tired I was when I found myself in bed.

But next, were exams. Pupils were looking forlorn and saying, "Oh! what if I don't get 'threw.'" After exams were over, we went home for our Christmas vacation glad of a little rest.

But when Monday morning appeared on the scene it almost seemed as if we had been having glorious dreams.

Every pupil came back to school full of new zeal ready to start in the last part of the semester.

Most of the conversation during those days was about the gifts we had given and received. But when the holiday spirit had drifted away, we began looking forward with little interest to the semester exams.

Pupils were forever roaming about in and out of different class rooms, interviewing their ever patient teachers. But I will not relate to you the final exams for I know that you have some idea of what they were and meant to us. I am glad to say that every pupil except a few passed with flying colors.

Then I left school with my pass slips grasped tight in my hand, with a happy smile upon my face; but still just a hint of regret of leaving dear old 7B beneath my smile.

Pussy's Part Little Puss flaunted her tail, a soft gray plumelike tail, defiantly.

Mistress Margaret would take in stray cats, would she! Well, Little Puss wasn't one to associate with ill-bred cats who didn't wash their paws and purr their thanks before they drank their milk.

It must be admitted that Little Puss was spoiled, but we mustn't blame her altogether, for Mistress Margaret thought there never was such a puss as hers, soft gray, with pink nose and small gray paws; Mistress Margaret had received Little Puss for a Christmas present when she was but a kitten, little and helpless. She had brought her up to be well mannered, but still Little Puss couldn't countenance strays; and so often she had to share her cushion, or her saucer, and most of all, Mistress Margaret's attention.

This time had been the last straw. Mistress Margaret had just given Little Puss her weekly bath and had freshly combed her silky fur and let her curl up on her favorite cushion by the fire, when there had been a great commotion outside and Mistress Margaret had run out to see what was the matter. Little Puss had been annoyed, she was sleepy and wanted it quiet. Then her mistress had brought It in.

Little Puss hardened her heart now when she thought how dreadfully tired and hurt that kitty had been. Puss had felt sorry for it until Mistress Margaret had said gently, but firmly, "Go on, Little Puss, let this poor kitty have your cushion by the fire," and had taken her own white saucer to feed the little stray.

Really there was nothing in this to make Little Puss angry, but she was sadly out of humor that day, and had decided Mistress Margaret needed reproof. That was why Little Puss waved her tail defiantly and slipped out of the back yard fence into the street, and with a toss of her whiskers entered a world that is often cruel to little kittens.

In the very first fray she lost her ribbon, this with the dog in her block. She had often seen this dog, but then she had eyed him with arched back and swelling tail from the safety of the sitting room window. Now, however, she had to run and scramble up a tree to get away from him, and the way he carried on, barking and all,-why, Little Pussy's heart was all a-flutter. Finally he went away and she came down and scampered away.

Nothing frightened her for a time and she was meditating on how he.r Mistress Margaret would feel when she couldn't find Little Puss, and how sorry she would be that she had given the little stray her saucer. How glad she would be when her kitten came back, having been gone just long enough to make her repent.

Alas for the best laid plans of little kittens! An auto "honked" suddenly and Little Puss just escaped being-well, rather, not being!

A small boy cried, "Oh, look at the cat! C'mere pussy. C'mere."

Puss was unsuspecting and walked over to the boy. He grabbed her rudely and howled gleefully, "Will she cry like our pussy does when I pull her tail? See!" When she escaped him, she thought fleetingly of the boy's pussy and pitied it. No time now to pity any pussy but herself. So many trials-dogs, dogs! Why did people like great big shaggy dogs that frightened pussies out of their wits?

She ran up onto a porch away from one of the terrible creatures, and a woman with a broom hissed at her, "Go away! I don't like stray cats."

A stray! Little Puss was indignant. She didn't know she looked so bedraggled. She was hungry; now she began to wonder if Mistress Margaret had been punished enough. When she found herself in a strange neighborhood she began to cry softly.

"Whats a' matter cat?" wheezed a big black and white cat looming up beside her. "Hungry? I just got this bone out of a garbage can up the alley. It has a little meat on it. Good thing for us, all housewives ain't learnin' to make a meal out of a lettuce leaf and a bone!"

Little Puss looked at the cat in wonder. She looked like an old timer. Mistress Margaret sometimes brought that kind home, battle scarred, with many fearsome tales to tell. They never stayed long though-born adventurers. Before, Little Puss had felt very superior to this kind, she with a home and Mistress, and a cushion all her own!

This time she gazed with interest and gratefully shared the bone, with many sighs for her saucer of warm milk. The big cat gave Little Puss some sound advice.

"You better go home, simpleton," she said. "You don't know when you're well off!" With this she left.

After a miserable night Litt~e Puss was ready to take the advice; but forsooth, home was far away. She wandered breakfastless for some time, and then-now for this we consider Little Puss very fortunate-then a somebody picked up Little Puss, saying with a pleasantly gruff voice, "See what's here. A cat! Just what I need for company.

Gee, I'm lonesome!"

If Little Puss could have described the man, her deliverer, she might have said briefly: "Very handsome, very capable looking, nice wavy hair, um-very nice indeed! Tall, well built, and carefully tailored."

Something like that perhaps. Maybe she might have mentioned his eyes, and hands, and voice, which were also "very nice"! Indeed Little Puss was fortunate.

An hour or so later she had had a bath-he had been rather awkward, but very gentle, and Little Puss didn't scratch or cry-and plenty of warm milk, and now, she was sleeping comfortably at the man's feet.

Several days passed and Little Puss was very happy with the Man, only a pang of homesickness on thought of Mistress Margaret. Pussy spent the evenings happily, 'cause then the Man was home; lots of (Continued on Page 119)

The Oaks In the south of Devon, between the little villages of Sampford and Halberton, there is a hill known as Rock Hill, spoken of in awed whispers by the neighboring folk, although few of them have seen it.

During the French Revolution a massive house of stone was built on the top of the hill overlooking the country side. Large wide-spreading oaks guarded it and made the name "The Oaks" quite fitting. As it had been designed for experiments in explosives, it was far away from all the surrounding houses. On one side was a canal little used but for water lilies, which grew there in the summer. The old trees and the massive old house in its desolate surroundings furnished a grim and forbidding picture.

Many years after the end of the Revolution the house was let to a rich man who was practically a recluse, since he lived a very secluded life and was scarcely ever seen by anyone.

One early morning in summer two men rowed into the village along the stream which came from the canal by the old house on the hill; with them they had the body of the owner of "The Oaks" with a dagger wound in his back! It was a strange story that these two men had to tell when an inquest was held at the morgue where the stiff body had been taken. They gave their names as John Barton and his son Joe of the village. They contended that they had been picking water lilies in the canal by "The Oaks" when Mr. Barton, in reaching for an elusive lily, had fallen overboard. Joe, fearing his father's lack of strength, dived in after him and brought up, not his father, for the elder Barton had gained the shore-but the stiff, dead body of the rich owner of "The Oaks." Nobody believed this story, for Joe and his father were suspicious characters in the neighborhood, Mr. Barton often having been arrested for poaching and stealing.

A complete search of "The Oaks" was made. The house was in terrible disorder; every drawer or cupboard had been opened and its contents strewn across the floor, coins scattered around, chairs ripped open, rugs torn up from the floor. Certainly the murderer had been looking for something.

Things now appeared black for the Bartons, for the murdered man was known to have had a considerable sum of money in his possession.

Just at this point the mayor, who lived next to the Bartons, volunteered the information that Barton Senior had been ill for two weeks and that Joe had been nursing him. On the testimony of so reliable a citizen, and since the murder had been committed within the last two days, the Bartons were acquitted.

From then on, no one would live in the house, for the murderer might be still at large; and so, until the outbreak of the World War, the house stood vacant. Strange stories about it grew; people passing late at night saw lights in the upper windows, others heard awful shrieks.

The village policeman, called upon to investigate the matter, shuddered, glanced nervously in the direction of "The Oaks" and laughed it off, saying that it was just foolish women's tales, and refused to do anything about the matter. But still the stories persisted. Some said ihat the former resident had returned to haunt the people because his death had not been avenged; others, that it was probably some German spy who was using these means to keep people away. Of course if this had happened in the United States it could have been attributed to a

"blind pig," but this happened in Merrie England, where there is no prohibition; therefore, no such simple answer could be given to the persistent question as to the doings at "The Oaks."

Still the lights and noises persisted and no one dared to stir out late at night, much less go past the desolate old house. It was fast falling to ruin; the owner did not care to get it fixed up; for, in the first place, no one would enter to fix it, and, in the second place, no one would live in it afterwards. Finally, the chief of police of that County was commissioned by the executive in London to investigate. Accordingly, with a chosen band of men, he arrived in the village of Halberton early one morning. It was his plan to explore by daylight, for he did not believe he could rely upon his men remaining after nightfall. Followed by a band of anxious, timid villagers, the police approached the house. As they pushed open the door and stepped across the threshold a long, shrill, blood-curdling shriek was heard, followed by a low moan. It seemed to echo from the innermost recesses of the walls, ceilings and floors. The whole party fled, terror stricken, and never stopped till they reached the village.

That evening a young man was passing "The Oaks." He was a stranger in the country, and was very tired from walking. He had seen no house or shelter of any kind since night fall, so he entered the gate to ask a night's lodging. It was a dreary scene that met his eye: the old, grim house, falling into ruins; the massive, embracing oaks; the loneliness. However, looking up, he perceived a light in an upstairs window. He knocked, but no answer. Again he knocked and the echo resounded through the house. The silence was ominous. He looked around uneasily. The desolation and lonelineRs affected him strangely; but he was very tired, he could go no farther; if no one would let him in, he would enter himself. The door was slightly ajar, just as it had been left by the searchers of the afternoon. He entered and closed the door behind him. Fumbling in his pocket he drew out a match and struck it; there was a candle on the table in the center of the room and he lit it. The place was strangely silent; but suddenly he felt the presence of someone in the room, someone behind him; he felt the breath of someone on his neck. Turning quickly, he recoiled in horror. A man, or what had once been a man, stood before him; now it was a hoary beast, with wide bulging eyes, beard long and unkempt, clothes in rags.

The young man drew back with fear as this figure drew stealthily nearer-nearer. Suddenly uttering a horrible scream, the figure gave a spring. The young man now realized that he had to do with a mad man. Back and forth he rocked in the monster's horrid embrace; and then suddenly, when it seemed he could never escape, the figure in his arms went limp, and relaxing its hold, dropped to the ground with a hollow laugh-lay dead.

Shuddering, the young man began exploring this terrible place.

Ascending the stairs he found the room with the light and on a table a document confessing the murder of the former owner for his money.

He who had committed the crime had been tormented by terrible thoughts, memories, and remorse, and finally had gone mad. He had lived alone in the house ever since the murder, sustained by the stores of food, and concealed in a secret hiding place. Before completely losing his mind he had written the confession which was found in the upstairs room. When the true story came out, the house was burned down and the place was never used again.

The Senior Play The senior class this year produced for their annual play "The Intimate Strangers" by Booth Tarkington.

The play opened in a junction railroad station where were marooned the "Intimate Strangers," Mr. Ames, who was Paul Kurth, and Miss Isabel Stuart, taken by Kathryn Butler. When left to spend the night as best they could together, Mr. Ames, a middle aged bachelor, was quite disturbed. Miss Stuart, with difficulty, consoled him by telling him very wisely that "when railroads break down, passengers can't travel, can they?" and by feeding him "one hard boiled egg, and one chicken sandwich, left over from a lunch, a very light lunch." Thus left together according to "nature" they fell in love with each other.

All was not to run smoothly, however, for with the end of the first act and the second, Florence, the flapper, came upon the scene with Johnny, and decided that she needed "an affair with an older man before she settled down." Thereupon, we began to fear for Isabel and her heart, and Mr. Ames.

Johnny White, Jack Ali, made a great success with his role of a lovesick young man, devoted to Florence and very jealous of her attentions to Mr. Ames. He turns to Isabel for comfort, sympathy, and a means of making Florence jealous, as he naively explains. He showed great talent in his role and convinced everyone that he was disappointed in love indeed.

Florence, Margaret Austin, was most delightful in her flapper role and almost irresistible even to the bachelor.

Ellen, Winona Singers, was the sweet maiden aunt whom Johnny said was "a hundred or a hundred and fifty, anyway, at least sixty!"

She was the one who mixed affairs up by being Miss Stuart's niece.

When Isabel discovered Mr. Ames' propensity to youth, she led him to confusion in a convincing way, and upon the confusion of her age was based the story. 8.he led him to believe her to be a rejuvenated old maid.

Finally the family Bible solved the mystery, by exposing a second marriage of Isabel's father. Mr. Ames declared he didn't care if she wer e one hundred years old, he loved her.

He had successfully escaped Florence's wiles, and all ended happily.

Matty, Kathleen Miller, was a saucy Irish maid, pigtails, brogue and all. She brought humor whenever she entered.

George Schorr, as Henry, was the slow-spoken hired man, and did splendidly.

Clifford Currin was the station master in the first act, and his portrayal of a funny junction station master was a great hit.

A great deal of credit goes to Miss Barker and Miss Van Winkle for the success of the play, for their untiring work as directors. Credit should also be given to Mr. Crull who managed the properties, lighting, and stage settings so effectively.

Junior Play "The Whole Town's Talking" was presented by the junior class in the High School Auditorium Thursday evening, April 1, and it truly lived up to its name, for the whole town has been talking since over the splendid success which it achieved. It was a good play to start with, filled with action, tense situations and rollicking humor and well within the range of high school capability. Then a cast was chosen admirably fitted for the various parts, the characters carefully drilled and the thing staged in a way befitting a professional performance.

To Carpenter Hewitt, who portrayed the part of Chester Binney, justly goes first honors, for he acted the part in a most excellent and finished manner. Rarely does a high school boy display the dramatic talent that characterized his work throughout the entire performance.

Elizabeth Luscombe, Margaret Smith, William Spence, Fred Whittlesey and Mary Louise Lipka received generous applause; for they interpreted their particular parts in a way which placed them decidedly above the average. Ralph Thompson, Virginia Taylor, Ruth Armstrong, Cornelia Schorr, Maxine Jewell, and John Palmer each did a different part in a highly creditable manner and completed a cast which had no weak spots.

Miss Beulah Packard and Miss Geraldine Travis deserve unstinted praise for their capable direction of the play; while Mr. Charles Ritchie, ably assisted by Frank Higby and Ralph Wilson, played no small part in the success of the play by the splendid staging and management of properties.

America's Child On June 10, 1925, "America's Child" was given by the ninth grade in the High School Auditorium. The pageant was divided into three parts of which a brief synopsis follows: PART I-His Heritage.

The Spirit of Progress prays for a justice loving people. Father Time is sent to answer her prayer. He calls on the nations of Europe to help. The Spirit of Britain responds with the Morris dancers ,and the Pilgrims. The Spirit of France responds with the French dancers, followed by the Early American Pioneers, the Dutch dancers, and American Soldiers and Pioneers. This part was followed by a trumpet solo

by George Schorr.

PART II-His Country.

The Spirit of Progress prays for a land for America's Child. The Spirit of the Woods responds with the Wood Nymphs, the Water Sprites, and the Birds. The Spirit of the Fields responds with the Fruit Maidens and the Grain Fairies, the Spirit of the Plains with the Flowers, Butterflies, and the Bees and Bugs. Between Parts II and III Winifred Huntoon sang.

PART III-His Nation.

The Spirit of Progress begs for a nation for America's Child. The Spirit of the Home responds with the Cleaners, the Bread Makers, and the Gardeners. The Spirit of Schools with the Three R's, and the Basket-ball Girls. The Spirit of State responds and America's children appear on the stage.

The Value of Extra Curricular Activities During the school year, now drawing to a close, practically every one of the 350 boys and girls enrolled in the four upper grades has engaged in some activity outside of the regular classroom work. That teachers are hired with the understanding that they must help with some particular activity, that equipment is furnished to carry on the same, and that a pupil at the time of graduation is required to present a full unit of credit earned in one or more activities, bespeaks with more prod than anything which I may write of the value which the administration of the school places on ext1:a curricular work.

It is our idea that there is a close correlation between the regular academic work and these many varied school activities. The operetta, orchestra and musical programs are outgrowths of work actually done each day in the Music Department. School plays, debating, oratory and declamation spring from public speaking classes; oral English and expression and the school paper and Annual form the outlet for English composition and journalism. In other words, every club and organization carried on throughout the year provides the laboratory in which our boys and girls actually practice the things which they are taught to do in class.

Dr. Thomas H. Briggs of Columbia University says, "The first duty of the school is to teach pupils to do better the desirable things they are likely to do anyway." It is natural and desirable that adults in any community form groups that they may further some particular interest to which they are willing to give their time and energy. How fine it is that many of these people may have training in high school under capable supervision in the art of organizing and governing themselves to the end that some very worthwhile task is consummated. Leaders are developed who will some day direct larger groups in formulating policies of great institutions and communities, and the members of an organization who have had previous training will be more capable in helping to shape an intelligent public opinion.

With all due respect to our academic work, and surely it is indispensable, it seems fair to say that a pupil gains quite as much from participation in extra curricular activities and it is our desire to constantly improve and perfect them that they may prove of even greater value to the individual, the school and the community.

The Bond With the beginning of the school year, the Bond Staff met and decided on the policies under which the school paper would be issued in the future. Previously the Bond had appeared spasmodically, due to an ever-lacking supply of material, and occasionally to the inefficiency of the beginning printing classes.

But this year we were determined that the date of the Bond's publication would be the second Wednesday of each month. Since all the members of the staff were familiar with their duties, and the scope of their positions, and the printing classes this year were partially composed of last year's veterans, there would be no reasonable excuse for a tardy publication. In addition, whereas the Bond of last year was comprised largely of the various literary efforts of star English pupils, this year the Bond should consist of the noble efforts of said precocious students in the form of current news.

During the year, six issues have made their appearance, one being a football issue, one a Washington Group special, and another concerning the seniors, while the remaining ones were ordinary issues.

The staff has done its best to maintain its policy throughout the year, and has earnestly endeavored to make the paper a real news sheet. Although it has not always appeared punctually, we must be forgiven because we have been working so tirelessly to make each publication a success that we have neglected time.

Acta Baldwiniana "A little paper which publishes Latin and English literary efforts of well-meaning Latin Students" would be the definition of one who has not studied Latin.

But to Latin students the Acta means much more. It is a help in studying: ofttimes troublesome word forms are discussed in it. There is always a cheery editorial, always some word study, and always some advice given by recognized authorities. And moreover, the Acta represents the Latin classes, for it can be just what they make it. So every Latin student has or should have a vital interest in it.

The majority of the literature in the Acta is in English, and what Latin there is, is very simply written.

The Acta Baldwiniana was organized in 1923, by Miss Almira Bassett, who was formerly instructor in the Latin department of this high school. The paper was a success from the start owing to the personal touch given to it by Miss Bassett and the Latin students.

The publication was well established when came that much bemoaned day on which Miss Bassett signified her intention of leaving our high school.

The reins were passed to Miss Hickox, our present instructor in the dead language. However, Miss Hickox's methods of teaching make the Latin language seem not dead, but alive with interest.

Miss Hickox took over the Acta and under her guidance it has thrived, and progressed. We take pride in saying that the Acta is constantly improving and that the whole school looks forward to each issue.

The Senior Washington Group In our freshman year we formed an organization, known as the Chi Psi Omega Society, to earn money to go to Washington. This group was small, consisting of only fifteen members, but we made over a hundred dollars and had a wonderful time. . In the eleventh grade we reorganized our group calling ourselves the Junior Washington Group, and invited the other juniors to join us.

Our membership was increased to about thirty-three and under the officers chosen at the reorganization the group progressed splendidly.

We gave many movies and bakesales, took subscriptions for magazines, collected old newspapers for sale, ran an excursion to Bob-Lo, worked the school print-shop, and greatest of all, gave a minstrel show, which was a huge success. Among other ventures was the "Ark," the old village hearse, painted, remcdeled and a familiar sight with its cargo of hot dogs and candy.

After a great deal of work and fun we finally started on our journey for Washington on April 10, 1926, at 3 :45. We spent a very enjoyable, b~t rather sleepless night on the train, arriving at Harpers Ferry in time for a real old southern breakfast at Hill Top House. After a tour of the town, including Jefferson's Rock and old John Brown's Fort, we again entrained for Washington.

We arrived in Washington that morning and spent four wonderful days in fun and sightseeing. We visited the New National Cathedral, (Continued on Page 127)

Debating Out from the misty past in that remote time when most of the present day seniors were freshmen, there comes, from the musty pages of an old annual, the knowledge that the debating team of 1921-22 got as far as the first elimination contest. Verily, history repeats itself, for the performance of that never-to-be-forgotten debating squad has been equaled by those participants of the forensic art who have just completed the 1925-26 debating season.

When, early in October of last year, debating activities were started, a small but enthusiastic corps of recruits offered their services along with those debaters who had "been through the fire." Progress was rapid on the question "Resolved: That the proposed Child Labor Amendment to the constitution should be adopted by the United States," and on Friday evening, November 20th, the affirmative team, composed of Leslie Clark, Kathryn Butler and Paul Kurth, officially opened the season by crushing Royal Oak's strong negative team in an intensely interesting contest held at Birmingham. The team is deserving of much credit for this victory, since it is the first time in three years that Birmingham has defeated Royal Oak. The performance of the team is adequate evidence of their ability for there was a unanimous decision rendered in their favor.

The next engagement of the affirmative was scheduled with Farmington on Friday, December 11th. Thither the followers of the wordy

a1 t took themselves to listen to a one-sided argument which ended in a second unanimous decision for Birmingham.

The beginning of the year 1926 found the negative team, composed of Kathryn Butler, Albert Guthrie and Carpenter Hewitt, ready to begin its work.

'I'he first real test of this team came when it met Ferndale here on Thursday evening, January 14th. The good work of the affirmative team came perilously close to destruction, but the negative managed to come out ahead on a two to one decision. After the debate the two teams, their coaches and the judges were entertained with a lunch given by Miss Speaker in her class room.

Then came Thursday, February 11th! By some queer turn of fate Birmingham had drawn Plymouth with whom they had debated just one month before in a practice contest! However, this did not dampen their ardor, and they mounted the platform with determination and fire in their eyes. Good arguments were offered on both sides, but in spite of the negative efforts the judges rendered a two-to-one decision against Birmingham.

The high schools of Michigan are organized to form a debating league. Birmingham is a member of such an organization and the four debates which have just been chronicled constitute the so-called "preliminaries." A maximum of four points is allowed for the winning of a debate, one point for each judge's decision and an additional point for the victory. After the preliminaries comes the "elimination" contest.

In order to qualify in this series a school must have a minimum of twelve points to its credit.

At the close of the preliminaries Birmingham had the necessary twelve points. Birmingham drew Monroe in the first round. Accordingly a team composed of Leslie Clark, Kathryn Butler and Paul Kurth, defending the affirmative side of the question, met Monroe here on Friday evening, March 5th. At last the eventful evening arrived. As usual, the judges were late; so there was some delay in starting. The scene of combat was destined to be Miss Barker's session room. Thither the teams went and took their respective places. For the next hour and a half Birmingham's fate hung in the balance. Now the negative would gain a point-then the affirmative would refute their arguments. At last it '\_Vas over. The audience was silent with expectancy. The ushers brought the judges' decisions forward. The chairman calmly (?) unfolded them and announced the decision unanimously in favor of Monroe! Thus ended the actual debating activities for the season.

This year the Detroit Free Press awarded a wall plaque to all teams who had gained at least twelve points. Birmingham is to have such a trophy in the near future.

On the 10th of May the squad journeyed to Ann Arbor where they witnessed the final debate of the season held between Hudson and Kalamazoo Central.

To Kathryn Butler justly goes first debating honors for she was the only girl on the squad and she debated the question pro and con with exceptional ability. The success of both teams was due to the excellent coaching on the part of Principal Melvin C. Hart, Miss Speaker and Miss Boone.

Prospects are bright for next year and it is hoped that a large number of students will avail themselves of the opportunity offered in debating.

Declamations and Orations The annual revival in interest in public speaking took place early in the winter; and by the first of February there was an eager search of the library for famous speeches suitable for declamation, and a constant look-out for vital topics which would serve as a suitable basis for a winning oration.

The local contest in March saw the desired masterpieces discovered, the topics found, the orations written, and all ready to be delivered before the public as the students' best efforts. The following declamations were given: "The Rider of the Black Horse," Dorothy Peck; "Peace, the Policy of the Nation," Mary Wenzel; "Children of the Poor," Jack Savage; "Why Am ALENE FELL I an American?" Alice Smith; "A Vision of War," Dorothy Manson; "The Death Penalty,'' Paul Savage; "I Am an American,'' Alfred Pote; "Life's Retrospect," Vera Gill; "The Secret of Lincoln's Power," Alene Fell; and "A Message to Garcia," Elizabeth Bray. Such a high standard of excellence was achieved by the declaimers generally that it was with difficulty that the judges, Miss Speaker, Mr. Hornback, and Mr. Toothacker, made the decision, giving Alene Fell first place and Dorothy Peck second.

Mildred Patterson, the only contestant in oratory, showed herself capable of withstanding strong opposition in her delivery of "The Hope of Democracy."

A dictionary of fine quality was awarded to the winners of each of the contests by the Detroit News, which offered additional rewards to the orator in the sub-district and district contests.

I The eliminations for the district contest were held at Pontiac, April 9, where representatives from Holly, Milford, Mt. Clemens, New Baltimore, Richmond, Royal Oak, Romeo, Utica, Oxford, and Birmingham gathered. Royal Oak was victorious in both contests. Edward Aldinger, who received second place in 1925, led in declamation with an editorial from the Detroit News, entitled "Don't Die on Third;" and Frank Peck carried off honors in oratory, delivering his speech, "War Debts and Justice" most effectively. These two people represented our sub-district in the contest which took place in Detroit.

''Captain Crossbones'' "Captain Cro sbones," the Comic Opera given by the music department, was a decided success. The plot of the opera was very amusing, not lacking in ex.dtement and romance. Don Cubeb de Cigarro, a haughty old Spanish Grandee, desires that his daughter Theresa marry a nobleman of Spain, to which arrangement she is very much opposed.

She is desperately in love with Richard Stoneybroke, an American planter. Fearing an elopement the Don has his mansion locked tight, but this does not daunt the daring young planter. He forms a band of pirates bold, with himself as chief, and carries off Theresa, as well as Miss Pelling, her governess, and Eleanor, an American heiress, her best friend. They carry out such a bold deed right under the nose of the Don, who fumes and fusses, and roars in vain.

Act two is laid in the ~irates' lair, and after much excitement and loud cries, Richard Stoneybroke succeeds in wiping the pirate band and their chief off the earth, leaving not a trace, save some resemblance between the pirates and the nice appearing gentlemen who turn up after the pirate band disappears. Richard returns Theresa to the Don. For his bravery the Don introduces Richard Stoneybroke as his future son-in-law and sole heir.

Choruses of maid and men servants, relations of the Don, and fierce pirates, added much to the atmosphere of the scenes, and these choruses were well done.

The songs, so beautifully given by the principals, were well received.

Monzelle Hoffman and Claude Streb are to be heartily commended on their acting as well as their singing. Monzelle, as the black-haired Senorita Theresa, was captivating. Winona Singers upheld the traditions of pretty American girls in a charming manner. With her singing it is no wonder she was irresistible to the fiery Captain Bambaster. William Spence, as the Captain, was a most ardent lover. Ernie Mann, as the fiery Spanish Grandee, and his wife, the Donna, added much to the production of the opera, the first pretentious attempt of the kind in our school.

Girls'~Qlee Club

The Music Department The Department of Music established in Birmingham High School last fall has, through the efforts of Miss Tilton, accomplished wonders during the year. Much musical talent has been revealed which no one suspected existed. Voice classes were held several periods a week so tha,t every student who would avail himself of the opportunity might go to the music room for at least two periods every week in order to become better acquainted with the rudiments and fundamental principles of singing.

Persons interested in instrumental music had an equal chance to receive instruction in playing instruments which they desired. In addition to this, for a portion of the year, a special instructor of violin playing came to the high school building one day each week.

Junior Chorus The results of the different classes were surprising, also very fine. Now B. H. S. has a reputable Girls' Glee Club which entered the Music Contest at Ypsilanti on May 13. Also, a Boys' Glee Club, an organization lacking to B. H. S. last year, has been organized and deserves much credit. We must not neglect to mention the fine large Junior Chorus which has been doing much good work this year.

As a result of the instrumental classes, a high school orchestra has been making a good name for itself.

Through the combined efforts of glee clubs, singing classes, orchestra and our accompanist, Mildred Green, and Miss Tilton as the most efficient of directors, the opera "Captain Crossbones" was put across very successfully.

So it is certainly very evident that the Department of Music has been a great benefit, both to the school as a unit and to the students individually.

The Varsity Club The Varsity Club, consisting of all men who have won letters in any one of the four major sports, reorganized at the beginning of the school year by electing the fallowing men as officers: Donald Bell, president; Charles Latham, vice-president; Charles Taylor, secretary; and William Plotkin, treasurer.

Football schedules were printed and distributed throughout t he school, while several of the members took care of the football field and collected the admission to the games.

During the football season an Athletic Board of Control was formed, composed of two seniors, one junior, one sophomore, Mr. Hart and Coach Van Winkle, which will settle all questions which may come up concerning athletics.

Besides the usual basketball schedules, two editions of a paper, called "Birmingham Athletic Review," were edited and sold at the games.

The pins worn by the members are a gold "B" with the word "Club" across them, and it is considered a serious offense for a member to loan his pin or allow it to get out of his immediate possession.

It is hoped that next year's club will not only carry on this work, but will also obtain the privilege of equipping the teams.

Birmingham Hi-Y Club It is the purpose of the Hi-Y Club to "Create, maintain and extend throughout the high school and community high standards of Christian character." At the beginning of this year there was only a small percentage of last year's members back to carry on this work. However, they enlisted about fifteen new members and properly initiated them into the club. This initiation was one that will not be forgotten for some time-by the new members.

After the initiations, the Club was thoroughly organized and a plan, which has been praised by Hi-Y leaders throughout Oakland County, was formed by the club for conducting the weekly meetings.

At the weekly meetings a time was set aside for the discussion of boys' problems. Of course this discussion was strictly confidential, which encouraged frank talks among the boys. As Mr. Hart was always present at these meetings many boys were given much needed advice.

Among other things the club gave a movie, took charge of the ticket sale for the Father and Son banquet and conducted two council meetings. Besides, the club was very well represented at the Older Boys' Conference held at Lansing and has always had a good crowd at council meetings away from home. As most of the club will be back next year great things are expected in the future.

The club owes its si-ncere thangs to Mr. Robert Lynd who has long been a guiding hand to our club and to other Hi-Y clubs of Oakland County. In Mr. Hart the club has one of the ablest leaders in the Oakland County Council, one who is always first with a helpful suggestion at council meetings and who takes a real interest in the club.

The Girl Reserves In May, 1925, an organization which was entirely new in Birmingham was organized under the direction of Mrs. George A. Moore. This club was the Girl Reserves, a high school branch of the Y. W. C. A. The purpose of the Girl Reserves is "To find and give the best" and the slogan "To face life squarely." In general the Girl Reserve movement is striving to attain the highest development of the character of the American girl.

The local group started with fifteen members, and the first officers elected were: president, Jane Wall; vice-president, Virginia Neal; recording secretary, Rosemary Lamond; corresponding secretary, Helen Harris; treasurer, Hilda Trumbull.

With Mrs. Moore as counselor, the group progressed rapidly during the short time left before the closing of school for the summer. The most important event of the season was that, through the help of the Community House Board, the club was able to send Hilda Trumbull as a representative to a summer conference at Saugatuck.

When the girls were brought together again in the fall new plans were made and the following officers elected: president, Betty Utter; vice-president, Kathleen Miller; secretary, Margaret Martindale; treasurer, Jane Shepherd.

The Radio Club The Birmingham High School Radio Club has now been organized for seven years, and, since radio is not such a novelty as formerly, the club is not so well known to the townspeople; however, it i~ doing work in the school.

For the whole year the club has been working on a super weather vane, designed by the Radio Club's advisor, Mr. Toothacker. This weather vane, placed on the top of an aerial mast on the roof of the school, is connected to a circle of lights in the laboratory, and lights the bulb which points in the direction that the wind is blowing. While this is being written the vane is yet unfinished, but it is hoped that it will soon adorn the comely mast of the club's antenna.

The club has been found useful by some in servicing of radio sets and accessories; and, while the meetings are few and far between, the members learn much concerning radio in the gatherings which they do attend. The membership is smaller than formerly, probably because radio has lost some of its novelty; but a few of the old-time bugs still remain, finding that radio still has as many marvels as ever.

Athletics Athletics in modern schools are a part of the course in Physical Education which is designed to secure a better physical development for all boys and girls. Athletics afford adolescent students an outlet for their physical energy into constructive, helpful activities rather than to permit its dissipation in harmful, injurious ways.

Athletics emphasize a careful, rational bodily hygiene for all contestants as the foundation for the quick, clear thinking necessary in the successful prosecution of all competitive games. Athletics have codes of honor, courtesy and fair play toward opponents, which react favorably on all contestants. Athletics call for close co-operation and yet permit individual excellence in planning or playing to be easily recognized and rewarded. Every senior high school boy should participate in at least one branch of athletics during the school year. Football, basketball, baseball, track and tennis afford a wide list from which to select a sport adapted to the individual student, the participation in which will produce that desired end of all education, "A sound mind in a sound body."

Varsity Football, r925 When the mud was allowed to dry on the uniforms and they were packed away not to be used again until the next season, the members of the Varsity football squad were able to look back upon a very successful season.

Led by Captain Bell the team was able to win five games, tie three and lose only two, both of which were lost to class "A" teams.

The team being light and fast was allowed to show its ability only upon two or three occasions, when the field was hard enough to warrant scientific football; and it will be remembered that upon these occasions Birmingham overwhelmed strong opposition.

The season was opened Sept. 26 at Ann Arbor, where the team held their opponents scoreless in the first and third quarters; but lack of condition told, and during the other two quarters the heavy Ann Arbor team scored easily.

After the Ann Arbor game the team got down to business and on Oct. 2 met Rochester for their first home game, and the fellows had their first taste of mud. The field was very slippery and Birmingham was held to a scoreless tie.

The following week, Oct. 9, the strong Redford team came to Birmingham, and again neither team was allowed to score because of the muddy, slippery field.

The next week, Oct. 13, Birmingham journeyed to Ypsilanti and there beat Dobbie's team by a good score after a hard fought battle.

Reserve Football, 1925 When the call was given for football candidates in the early part of September, there were some fifteen or twenty fellows who responded who had played little or no football.

These men, under the direction of Coach Groves, were taught the fundamentals of the game and developed into one of the best reserve teams that has ever represented Birmingham.

When the season ended they had played six games, winning two, tieing one and losing three. Their most exciting contest was the game with the Highland Park reserves there. The game looked promising for Highland Park until a touchdown resulting from a blocked punt turned the tables for Birmingham.

Next year when the call for candidates comes we hope to see the berths on the first eleven filled by the members of last year's reserve squad.

In the inter-class track meet, which was won by the sophomores, the winners of each event were divided into two track teams called the "Reds" and the "Whites." The event winners of this meet were declared the track team.

At Rochester, our first track meet with another school, we easily came out with the larger score. We then went to Redford. They had a powerful squad, and won an argument, but lost the track meet.

At the tri-school meet held at Ferndale we met our old friends, Royal Oak. We easily vanquished them, but fell before Ferndale. The score was as follows: Ferndale, 851/::! ; Birmingham, 45 ½; Royal Oak, 13½.

In the next meet, at Dearborn, our team showed their ability to procure nearly all the firsts and seconds.

Our first meet at home was held with Pontiac. We lost 79 to 50, but nevertheless the team put up a hard fight against a larger school.

The return meet with Rochester was a success (for Birmingham), for we again defeated them, 94-24.

We yet have the Oakland County meet and the S. E. A. A. meet in which to prove our ability to win. We expect to give our utmost to retain the trophies won last year.

The team loses several men this year: Taylor, high point man and outstanding star throughout the season; Captain Latham, who, hindered by an operation, was unable to compete the latter part of the season; C. Schwarze, who throws the javelin; and Mann, our 220, relay, and Javelin star. These men will be a great loss to the team, but there are many new men waiting for their places. The season has been successful so far and we hope it will continue to be so.

\1arsity Basket Ball The Varsity squad of this year was very unfortunate. After Coach Van Winkle had prepared a team which looked as if it would take state honors, as it had won four of the first six games which had been played, two of which were league games, the men, who had received awards for football from the school, were declared ineligible. The reason was that high school athletes are not allowed to receive, from any source, anything which is worth more than a dollar. Eight of the ten players were now unable to play and as the Royal Oak game was coming soon, it did not look very good for old B. H. S.; but to the surprise of the school, Coach succeeded in turning out a team, which, although they were unable to beat Royal Oak, showed the old fight which is characteristic of our teams.

Finally, after a meeting of the State Athletic Board, the boys were reinstated. Every one was joyous, but the team was unable to get into shape in time to have a show in the tournament; and, although entered, they were unable "to come through." Basket Ball Reserves The second team of this year won about two-thirds of their games; but they are not expected to win all of them, for the purpose of the subs is to develop a good varsity team.

Cox and McClure took turns at center; Peterson and Bradley held the left and right forward positions respectively, while Cooney played running guard and Doherty took care of the other forward. Several of the squad show great promise and will be strong candidates for the varsity next year.

Cooney and Bradley led the scoring while the others contributed a few points from time to time.

We hope that next year's subs will have as good luck as we have had and will develop a good varsity team.

"Ben" Brown: "Big Ben." A valuable man; they tried and tried to get around him.

"Jeff" Bell: A fast guard; no one starred who played against "Jeff."

Claude Streb ("Strebbie") : He may be a standing guard, but he doesn't stand for many baskets.

"Dave" Gafill: A new man this year. Watch Dave next year.

"Bill" Plotkin: A guard. The opponents found it hard to get by him.

When Coach Van Winkle called for candidates for baseball, about forty answered the summons.

Among these were the veterans of the preceding season, namely, C. Taylor, captain, Plotkin, Latham, Currin, and Mann, who will graduate in the course of the year. Besides these there were Bradley, Cooney, Thompson and Streb, all of whom are now juniors, with the exception of Cooney.

The material did not look as green as it did last year and there are good hopes for a better team.

Girls' Basket Ball Looking back over the past season in girls' basketball, it is safe to say that it has been most successful. Several of the girls on the team were new and had never played to an audience before.

Helen Reid made an excellent captain, and player as well. Mabel Cook who played center with her was up on her toes every minute.

Avis Gravlin, captain-elect, could play either center or forward with an ability that promises much for the 1926-1927 team. Kate Miller knew how to pile up points every minute. Helen Crawford always knew where the basket was and how to drop the ball into it. Fuzz Pullin was one of the nerviest players on the team when it came to getting the ball. Spaghetti Ross never exhausted her superfluous supply of pep, even in the hardest game. Gin Taylor, a guard, was right after the ball every second. Cornelia Schorr, though little, could certainly play.

Lily Belle Baldwin promises to be a star in the future; and coming right up along with her are Joan Winborn and Peggy Haldane, two of the youngest members on the team.

Resume of Games The first game on Dec. 11, was with Farmington, and in a hard, fast game, with everyone getting a chance to play, the girls won their first victory.

On Dec. 18 they had the second chance to show their metal in the game with Northville. This game had been looked forward to with some apprehension, for rumor had it that Northville was out for the championship. Birmingham was again victorious, and N orthville's hopes were blasted.

'I he next game, on Dec. 1, was with the Alumnae on the high school floor. This time we met a superior team. It was a good close game, but the older girls had two points more than Birmingham.

Perhaps this game was responsible for the loss of the following game, Jan. 7, when Southwestern came out and defeated us.

After losing two successive games, the team decided to get back into their old stride, and play winning basket ball. On Jan. 22 Farmington came to Birmingham to get revenge for their first game. However, the Maroon and White were again victorious.

The next game was with Rochester. Because of the banquet given by the senior boys, some of the seniors did not go to this game and the "subs" had a good chance to play. Again, Birmingham won safely.

It is always interesting to see a coach take a team to her home town, and on Feb. 12, Miss Mac took her girls to Tecumseh. The first pep meeting for girls in the history of Birmingham was held that day. Three of the "regulars" were ill and for a while things looked pretty black; but when the team began to play,. their nerve came back and they won the game.

On Feb. 19 Rochester came here for their return game, but again they were defeated.

The last game of the season did not turn out so well for Birmingham. We went down to Ferndale full of hope, but the fates were against the girls and the game was lost.

Credit is due Miss MacIntyre, who coached the girls. Under her direction, the team put in a lot of hard practice and the results were all that could be asked for.

Tennis Tennis teams in Birmingham High School are comparatively new; but this year it seems that the girls have put forth a real effort, and are getting results. Monzelle Hoffman and Avis Gravlin, with Kate Miller and Mary Louise Lipka as alternates, are on the team. Although the girls have not won all of the games, they are making a good showing.

The first game, with Royal Oak on April 29, went to our opponents, with a score of 3-0. In the next game, though, with Farmington on May 3, Birmingham was victorious with the score reversed, 0-3. Three days later we were credited with another game through Holly's forfeiting. On May 11 Rochester came here and defeated us, 2-1. This was followed by another game with Royal Oak on May 17, and again our opponents won, 2-1. On May 20, however, Birmingham went to Farmington, where they were victorious, winning 3-0.

Taken all in all, the team has been successful; and since Min, Avis and Mary Louise will all be here next year, much may be expected of the team in '27.

The Freshman Reception Each year the babies of the high school are tendered a warm welcome by the older members of the senior high school.

This year the party took the form of a masquerade which was held, as always, in the gymnasium. Many very pretty, original costumes mingled with the funny ones, and a great many national dresses added to the attractiveness of the picture presented. A Spanish costume took the first prize for the most attractive. A lovely, plump, colored "mammy" was awarded the prize for the funniest outfit; and to the amazement of everyone the lady under it all proved to be not a "mammy" at all, but an "uncle."

The auditorium w~s all dressed up in long streamers in pastel shades. During the evening very appropriate fav Jrs for the freshmen were handed out, being none other than peppermint baby sticks. Other refreshments were se1 ved between dances.

At eleven-thirty the orchestra, which was exceptionally good, played "Home Sweet Home," and a happy group left for home.

Football Dance As the football season came to a close, the customary football dance was given for those who had fought so fard and faithfully. The dance was held in the auditorium on the evening of December 4.

A unique idea was carried out in decorations. College pennants and school pennants were placed on the backboards and gave a pleasing effect. At either end of the hall were the goal posts wound in maroon and white, with small pennants strung across both posts, one for every member on the football squad. A football was suspended in such a manner as to give the impression of being "put over." Two large pennants were hung from in front of the goal posts, one for ex-captain Gerald Bell, and the other for captain-elect Bennett Brown.

During the intermission the football sweaters were brought in and presented to the members of the first team and letters were given to the reserves.

The parents of the members of the team and a few invited guests acted as chaperons for the party.

Dancing ceased at 11 :30, when all apparently had spent a very enjoyable evening.

The Basket Ball Dance The greatest event of the year as far as the social side of high school The probable reason for the greater interest shown in this function is the fact that it is given in honor of both boys and girls instead of only the boys.

to decorate the auditorium and gave a most pleasing effect. The clever dance programs were booklets resembling basketballs and were tied with a tiny bow of maroon and white.

The party was chaperoned by the faculty and the proud parents of the members of the teams. Punch was served during the evening and was very refreshing to the dancers. The orchestra was fine and peppy and furnished the most enchanting music.

It is very apprcpriate that in appreciation of the honor they bestow upon the school, the members of the basketball squads should be awarded some tokens of appreciation. This time, after a few ceremonies and speeches, letters were presented by Mr. Hart.

The dance then continued until "closing time" and with many happy memories we left the party and went home.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A HIGH SCHOOL ERASER

Alas! Mine has been a hard time! Young and straight, I was sent forth from the felt factory to a huge school supply ware-house; and ,( now I am dying on a chalk shelf in a class-room in a high school, known as Baldwin, relating these, my last words, to a new ruler and half a piece of chalk. As soon as I was delivered to this building I was sent to one of the classrooms. My back was immediately broken with a resounding crack. During a shortage of erasers in the senior session room, I was transferred there, only to be used in one of the longest and most painful eraser fights in history. More than one eye have I caused to swell and smart. Well, after the hectic fight, all the erasers were distributed to other rooms and I took up chalk gathering here. I have been the victim of many games of catch, and many times cruelly abused.

At the beginning of last hour, old, weary and battered, I was placed at the back of the room. A cruel pupil thought this was fine chance to test his sharp knife. So, at the end of the hour he left me in this condition, with but a few minutes of life left. I am not angry at the boy with the knife, for presently I will go, I hope, to a far better land.

We have at last discovered the cause of a large percentake of the disturbances in the session room. Thumbtacks. No, they have not been sat upon, but they now reside in Claude Streb's heel and a rumbling noise like hobnails is heard when he trips gaily down the aisle.

Numerous epithets proceeding from the end of the hall denote that Mick Thompson and Phil Henry can't agree.

Savory odors from the cafeteria. There ought to be a smell-proof door there.

The sponsors were Mrs. Hornback , Miss Densmore, and Miss Ackerly. The dances were instructed by Miss Kriekard; drills by Mr. Crull and Mr. Van Winkle; costumes by Miss Van Winkle; music, Miss Grattan, and Mildred Green, pianist. The program was in charge of Helen Joyce, Margaret Truax, Milford Clark, and Alfred Wahl.

The pageant was indeed a decided "roaring success" and the audience was well satisfied. Most of the participants were also satisfied, especially those who received, at the close of the program, diplomas promoting them to senior high school.

BOARD OF CONTROL OF ATHLETICS (Continued from Page 81) of all athletic affairs of the high school.

It was decided to have on this board, the principal of the high school, the athleti•~ director, one senior girl, two senior boys, one junior boy and one sophomore boy.

This is the first attempt at anything of this kind in our high school and for this year it has been active in the athletic affairs of the school and has helped the athletic managers in deciding athletic problems.

The following are a few of the puzzling questions that were decided by the board this year: How many quarters should ll

person be required to play in order to win a letter? Should a person receive the reserve award who has been carried on the squad all season but who has not played enough quarters to win a varsity letter? Should a person who has played basketball all season up to February but who graduates then recf'ive a letter?

What size letters should be awarded for the different sports? And many other questions too numerous to mention.

The Board has been permanently organized, a constitution has been drawn up, and it is hoped that next year will see a great advantage along the line of athletic administration.

About six o'clock the next morning the telephone rang frantically. When Al answered it he learned that about twenty-five more of his excited friends were waiting for him at the station. He had six buckboards hitched up, and riding on Black Star, he and the cowboys starteJ for El Cajon. The rest remained at the Triangle R. As Al and the boys rode down Main Street a great yell came from the station! Everyone was surprised to see the other fellows here in the west.

Among those at the station was a group of girls busily discussing the art of riding. Dot Bowden, Jean Heacock, Bernice Smith, Shorty Pote, Liz Geisel, Al Parks, Dot Cook, Helen Joyce, Mary Anne Quarton, and Marie Larsen were anxiously waiting for a ride on Ar:; horses.

In another group, which occupied most of the platform, were people of world renown: Red Palmer, Henry's chief salesman in Detroit; So Plotkin, a dancer from "Gay Paree"; Bob Porritt, the world's famous saxophonist; Charles Klingensmith, a gentleman of society; Vera Gill, a famous Latin teacher; Nellie ·woltman, a famous cartoonist; Mick Thompson and Babs Hill in "Pursuit or Happiness Just 'As They Like It;' " Bill

Swehla, a football coach in St. Louis, Missouri; Leland Gunn, chief bell-hop at the Statler in New York; Fuzzy Pullin, All-American basket ball player; Phil Henry, an auto racer, who drives his Chevy just like he did at the Soph party at Maceday Lake in '25; Peg Truax, president of national Girl Reserves; Zeke Wood, a member of the Royal N. W. Mounted Police; and Bill McClure, the president of Oregon State College.

With much confusion, they reached the Triangle R. As they came up the road Bill Spence was heard playing, "Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here!"

In a few days a program was arranged and the real fun began.

One evening they had an old fashioned Clance and lt really was surprising some of those old steps (the Charleston) those girls did do!

Pete, Al, and Nellie, Long Larry and Bill Spence afforded the music.

It surely was a gay time !

Al planned a riding expedition into the mountains. This was a royal treat, especially to the boys who had loads of fun watching the girls learning to ride! This was the happiest time of all.

Although miles and miles away from Baldwin High they had a wonderful time remembering the happy days together in school; and going home in the twilight they all sang, "The Old Maroon and White."

Often, though, she wondered about Mistress Margaret and felt very, very sorry.

Just a few evenings passed, about a week or more; then one evening when Little Puss was on the Man's shoulder he suddenly sat up straight and layin~ aside his pipe whistled softly. He seemea intent on some news in the paper. Then he picked up Little Puss and loked at her carefully.

"You are pearl gray, you are like a Persian, you are pretty.

Now are you the gray kitten lost by-'Miss M"lrgaret Day, 342 N. Capitol Ave?'" This he read from the paper. "Now are you, 1 wonder. By Jove, we'll go find out. Get your bonnet!"

A few minutes later little Puss wa.;, unceremoniously dumped into a basket and covered up. At all the noises she heard following, she was not so "terribly" scared because she knew by this time that the man was always kind anu gentle with her.

Joy, ah Joy! Mistress Margaret's own voice saying, "Yes, I am Miss Margaret Day who advertised for my kitten. Have you-?"

What was a little blanket to Puss when she heard that longed-for voice?

She scrambled out and with one leap was on Mistress Margaret's shoulders. Then she was in the old sitting room; there was her own cushion, and, why there was the "stray" that had come that dreadful day.

When later Mistress Margaret put her on the floor saying, "There, Little Puss, I want to thank him for bringing you back," Little Puss went right over to the little stray and very sweetly began to make friends. She had been a "stray", too, now·.

The man stayed for some time. Little Puss heard him telling of his being a stranger and very lonesome . By this time Mistress Margaret and the man had discovered mutual friends and were talking like old acquaintances.

When he rose to go Puss was very s:id and cried.

Then Mistress Margaret said, "Never mind, Puss, you'll see him again, I'm sure, if he'll be pleased to come back."

The man left no doubt in Mistress Margaret's mind as to that. He was sure he'd be delighted.

He did come often , too. Little Puss saw him all the time it seemed, and then one day-one day there was a great deal of excitement. Puss thought Mistress Margaret looked like an angel, all In white, and the man was there, too; he stood beside Mistress Margaret. Then Little Puss went to a new home and the man was there all the time.

Our activities did not stop here for many more things occurred than have been enumerated; then, too, it is a difficult matter to state, in a history, the spirit and morale of the members of the class while pursuing their various objectives; so it will not be attempted here, but let it be sufficient to say that no class h,ul any better co-operation or comradeship.

This, our senior year, is proving to be all that had been expected and all that we have hoped for. Being bound together, as we are, with such bonds of friendship and goodwill as have been manifest throughout our early years, it is no wonder that we assume the position which we now enjoy. We realized that in order to become a live class it was first necessary to re-establish ourselves; so at the beginning of the term the senior class gave a camp-fire party which was declared to be the best party ever given by the present senior class. Impromptu stunts, "good eats," and good will were responsible for the success. The Senior Play, directed by Miss Barker and Miss Van Winkle, was decidedly satisfactory from all angles, and the cas1, and property committees deserve special comment. This year the class boasts of its splendid athletes as it has in the past, and we believe that the school will feel quite a loss when they are gone. Just as in athletics, the class is prominent In academic work, with about fifty per cent of the class on the permanent honor roll, surpassing the standards of any revious class. Debating and journalistic work receive contributions from the senior class.

Perhaps, when you reach this point you wonder at the absence of facts, figures and names, but the writer wishes to state that the lack of these things is due not to carelessness on his part, but rather to the fact that he feels that the senior class are more concerned with the better times of the future and not on the revival of past glory and distinction; and furthermore, a history is usually meant to convey the idea that the thing has ceased to be; (Continued on Page 182)

THE SENIOR VVASHINGTON GROUP (Continued from Page 127) the Congressional Library, the museums and art galleries, the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the White House, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving and the Pan-American Building. We drove through the Zoological Gardens anct Georgetown, where ,vashington made ill:o headquarters while laying out the Capitol. We went to Arlington and saw the new ampitheatre and paid homage at ti1e Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We visited beautiful old Mount Vernon, laying a wreath on Washington's tomb, and returned to Washington by boat. We aiso visited the inspiring Lincoln Memorial and many considered this the most Jmpressive thing of all.

We had a great deal of fun in Washington. On Tuesday evening we had a surprise party for "Spaghetti" Ross and Helen Reid who birthday it was, and on Wednesday evening part of the party saw "Blossom Time" and the other part saw "Three Live Ghosts".

Thursday morning after an early breakfast we caught the train for Baltimore, from where we took buses for Gettysburg. We had lunch there, drove around the battlefields, and returned tu Baltimore where we took the Steamer State of Virginia for a trip down tile Chesapeake. We had a delicious dinner

on board, danced a little, gave our mlllstrel show and then spent the evening on deck.

We got off early the next morning a~ Old Point Comfort.

Breakfast wa:.1 served us at the Officers' Mess and then we were shown old Fortress Monroe.

We took the train for Williamsburg ana saw the points of interest there, including· Bruton Parish Church. We had dinner at William and Mary's College ana then went on to Richmond, where we took a sight-seeing tour around the clty.

After dinner at the Hotel Richmond, we went to the show and then got on our Pullman. All the next day we roae through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the delightful scenery of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohto.

Arriving at Cincinnatti, we had dinner and then saw the downtown section or the city. We arrived in Detroit at 7 :4 5 the next morning.

There is no question but that the trip was a most profitable one, educationally and otherwise; and probably everyone or us would enjoy it just as much and perhaps more a second time.

Emerson-I like to hear that professor lecture on chemistry. He brings things home to me that I have never seen before.

CONANT & OSBORNE THE GIRL RESERVES (Continued froni Page 78) in the year, Mrs. Hartsuch, who was formerly a Girl Reserve counselor in Battle Creek, was also elected.

The year's activities were numerou'I and included two informal dances, hikes, and teas. At Christmas/ time the members gave presents to the Indian children at Mt. Pleasant.

One disappointment came to the group during the year, and that was the resignation of its skillful president, Betty Utter, who spent the winter in Arizona.

In February Mrs. T. R. Donavon entertained the girls at an informal tea at her home in Bloomfield Hills.

The main

event of March was the initiation of ten new members. In the same month Mrs. J. B. Williams t old the girls at one of the meetings about her experiences during i. summer she spent in Labrador on the hospital ship of the famous Doctor Grenfell.

A nature study meeting was held ln May at Cranbrook. A June swimming party given at Pine Lake by Mrs. T. R. Donavon brought the year to a happy conclusion.

The members feel that this club has benefitted them considerably and we all hope that the Girl Reserves will always be as successful as they have been this year.

The first social event was a wienie roast.

It was followed by a dance ing party for the winter months; this was a grand and grown-up affair.

Meanwhile the studies proceeded and finals came. After many misgivings the 7 A's became dignifed 8B's. It has been decided that the same officers preside.

When the dues are collected we shall have another party.

For the future of this wisdom seeking class the fates must be consulted.

Ferndale came to Birmingham on Oct. 30 and on a fairly dry field Birmingham easily defeated them.

On a very slippery, rainy and muddy field at Port Huron, Birmingham was beaten by the heavy Port Huron team on Nov. 7 Friday, Nov. 13, Wyandotte came to Birmingham and on a fairly dry field met an overwhelming defeat at the hands of our local boys.

The Northville game was cancelled and we played Tecumseh on Nov. 20; this game was easily won on a dry field .

On Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, the season was brought to a close with the annual Royal Oak game. After a hard fought battle Royal Oak won the game which was later forfeited to Bin11ingham.

In the minds of all, the season, although wet and muddy, was a very successful one; and may the teams that represent Birmingham in the future have as great if not greater success.

I turned to the sport news. Heavens above! There was a picture of Florence Hagerman. She had just won a roundthe-world flight in her new monoplane, which she designed herself.

Dear me, I almost forgot to tell you what Fred is doing. He's a Professor of Latin at Harvard. Florence is taking us over to see him tomorrow. Won't that be jolly?
