3Juuinr C!tla.as llli.atnry 'Twas in the memorable month of September, 1916, when we,, the Jolly Juniors, as the greenest of Freshies entered Birmingham High School, which was then held in the Old Hill School.

During the Freshman year we were a source of amusement to the higher grades. Many were the grinds on us; but, like the good-natured people we were, we took them all smilingly and were g~ad that we were not "simply good; but good for something."

The class held its election shortly after school opened. Thelma Morrow was elected President; Victor Peck, Secretary and Treasurer. Miss Hayden was selected as our Advisor. Among the most striking events of the year was a Chapel Program in which the talent of the class was represented. That program will not soon be forgotten. The year closed with a large party at the home of one of our members.

At the beginning of our Sophomore year we were left school-less since ~he new high was not yet completed. Classes were held in the church house and many and wild were the escapades of the Sophs there. The class officers fur the year were Melbourne Roberts, President, and Harold Shaw, Secretary and Treasurer. Miss Vail was our advisor'" We entered the new high school 111 November, there to enjoy many privileges of which hitherto we had been Lleprived.

In September our class burst forth again upon the horizon of the B. H. S., this time as Juniors. Class election was held and Norman Schlaack was cho3en President; Sallie Brennan, Treasurer, and Helen Walker, Secretary. Mi.ss Hebblewhite was appointed Junior Advisor. Our first party was a "weenie·• roast early in the fall. Then came the Junior-Senior spread held in the ca.fe~ teria of our building. It was the first affair of its kind and the Juniors won much fame by it.

The Class has been always well represented in school activities and always strives to "Be not simply good; but good for something.''

Our class entered the high school in the year of 1917 in the Hill building, as the new Baldwin High was not yet completed. The class then had about fifty students. We had made for ourselves a good reput~tion in the grammar school and so were well received in the high school.

In the ninth grade we were, of course, the laughing stock of the upp~r classmen, but we lived through that as many other freshman classes have. .As Freshmen, we had several very successful parties with Miss Dorris as our class supervisor.

At the beginning of the second semester, we moved to the Baldwin High School, the first and largest class to enter there. Our program was then changed very much for we had several new studies opened to us such as Domestic Science, Domestic Art, Gymnasium work and Manual Training. It was also a great relief as we had been very crowded in our former building with two pupils to a seat. Our standings have certainly shown the difference of having a place to study.

In September of 1918, we started high school life again as Sophomores with our chance to turn around and poke fun at the Freshmen. We are now running along smoothly as we are more accustomed to a larger number of students. We had a lot of fun at our Hallowe'en party with Miss Isherwood as class supervisor, and our skating party which we had at Wing lake with Mr. Toothacker will be long remembered. The Chapel programs which we have given have been well received. What we have done this year as Sophomores gives just a glimpse of what we are going to do next year as Junior.;.

We, the members of the Freshman Class of '19, after serious setbacks and difficulties, have arrived at last at this stage in our High School career. We think we have a right to think that we are "someone" instead of "just Freshies"; furthermore we consider ourselves almost on the same footing as the Seniors, for are we not the Seniors of the Junior High School?

At our first business meeting of the year we elected the following officers: Russell McGorey President Donald Mann Vice President Henrietta Field Secretary and Treasurer Entertainment and Refreshment Committee Maxwell Purdy Florence Wendorph Samuel Hayes Eliot Coryell Katherine Trumbull Dorothy Wilson Our class is interested not only in scholastic affairs but also in social nffairs. Our first party was held at Donald Mann's, the second at Florence Wendorph dorph's. A "Weenie Roast" was held at E liot Coryell's and a Hallowe'en Masquerade at June Hoteling's. A good time was had at each of these parties as was shown by the large attendance.

Our class, which is exceptionally bright, predicts a great future for uur champions. Lloyd Smith, Merritt and Merrill Schlaack and Wes1ey Groves are all on the first team in Base Ball, Basket Ball and Foot Ball. Russell McGorey and Ernest Yeager, two promising young men, are on the second team in Basket Ball.

The girls should also be mentioned as they are doing splendid work m practicing for the team next year. The most promising are: Florence Wendorph, Florence McKinney, Herma Reynolds, Orlou Schlaack and Henrietta Field.

The artists of the class are few and far between, However, we have one good one, Orlou Schlaack.

There are quite a few musicians. Katherine Trumbull and Florence Wendorph, the leading ones, play for Junior High School.

In Elocution, Herma Reynolds stands first.

As an Orator Samuel Hayes certainly deserves credit, Russell McGorey and Russell Berger are the violinists.

As a poet Edwin Bunyon will surely make himself famous.

The only artist our class lacks is a soloist. However our already famous sextette which rendered several selections in chapel expects to go before the public sooner-or later.

Amy sat nodding in her chair before the fire-place while the snow softly caressed the outside world.

It was a crispy, starry night and Amy had just come in from a brisk walk in the co~d, clear air, hence her drowsiness. Presently she ceased to nod and the wings of sleep, laden with sweet dreams lovingly enfolded her.

She found herself in a tiny fairy wood and Mother Nature was standing by her side. She gently put an arm about the little girl.

"Dear Child," she said. "You are one of Nature's true children and I have had you come here to this wood so that you may choose your best loved £earnn and then, because you have so well followed my teachings, I am going tc> allow you to live forever with that favorite season.''

"Sweet Mother Nature! but how can I choose?"

"Tut! Tut! Child, it will be easy.''

A very warm breeze fluttered through the room just then.

"Ah!" breathed Mother Nature, "Summer is coming," and then Summer with all her glory, flowers and ferns, was before them. She was a dark, gracc>ful maiden and very beautiful. There was a languid beauty in her every movement, but Amy shrank from her, "No! beautiful Summer!" she cried, "I cannot love you! You are so sad to me. My dear Sister, the only one I ever had, died while you were here. ludeed, I cannot love you!"

Summer di:::appeared without seeming to go and a wreath of lovely golden and red leaves fell at Amy's feet, Autumn's messenger.

Summer had been beautiful but Autumn was radiant. She was older than Summer and her cheeks were very pink. Her gown was wonderful in its golJen glory. Amy took a step towards her in silence.

At length she said, "You are very, very beautiful, Autumn, and I really like you. I am sure I cannot like you best of all."

Autumn vanished and in her place stood a hoary white bearded old man.

"Oh! Winter!" cried Amy, "I really love you because you're so jolly and our Merry Christmas comes while you are here. Still I cannot love even you the best of all!"

Then Winter was gone. Suddenly the sweetest strains of music were heard and, amid showers of dear, dainty violets, Spring came dancing. So graceful was she that she seemed to be simply floating along in her gauzy white gown and the breeze playfully toyed with her golden hair. No words can describe Spring as she then came in all her airy, graceful loveliness.

Amy ran toward her and fell at her feet, gazing at Spring with eyes full of love and admiration.

"Dear lovely Spring," she cried, "I love you best of all! You are so wonderful and sweet and you bring the dear little violets Your season is one of music and laughter While you are here the whole earth is a veritable fairy-

land My greatest joys have come w:th you Dear, dear Spring, I love you so. I want always to stay with you."

Mother Nature smiled and Spring, sweet Spring, kissed the little girl, the11 carried her away amid clouds of airy indefinable filminess.

®ur lrihrary The library is one of the pleasant rooms in the building with its dark green steel shelves around the walls, the light oak tables and chairs in t!Je center of the room, a magazine rack in one corner well supplied with the latest magazines, the card catalogue near the door and the librarian's desk opyosite by the windows.

The book shelves contain over 1900 books at the present time and many new ones are being purchased every year, this year principally biographies and histories. There are also good books of reference, poetry and fiction.

The library is open all day and used by students and teachers alike. At any hour of the day one coming in might see the tables crowded with pupils poring over magazines, or others at the shelves doing reference work.

Wqe ialbwin i;igq ~rqnnl If you were a visitor in Birmingham today, the first building that would be shown you would be the Baldwin High School.

Several years ago when Birmingham began to be a rapidly growing town, an::!. it was e ident that it would so:m be without adequate schools, Miss Martha Baldwin, a progressive resident, who had the good of the community very much at heart, saw this condition and devoted the remainder of her life to awakening the people to the needs of another school. When she died, she ldt a sum of money for a new school building which was to be called the Baldwin High School.

This school was to be located in the center of town, have an auditorium large enough for any local gathering; and free public shower baths for bo~h men and women. After much di:;:cussion, a site was purchased on Maple Avenue and Chester and Martin Streets, directly opposite the Hill School. The town was bonded for two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars to pay for the schoo:, building lot, and equipment.

The school was completed and cccupied in the latter part of nineteen hundred and seventeen. Owing to the European War, building materials became scarce and very high, as did all equipment. However it was at last finisheu and the total cost o~ the school equipment and site was two hundred and forty thousand dollars. Today the Baldwin High School is rated as the most com-

plete school, for the size of the town, in the whole state of Michigan. Miss Martha Baldwin's vision has indeed come true!

When one, standing at Maple Avenue and Chester Street, first gazes upon the Baldwin High School, it impresses one as being a red-brick palace containing innumerable windows.

The High School is built in the shape: of a 1etter "L," having been p1anned in this way to a11ow for future growth, when more rooms are needed.

The building has three entrances, two on Map1e and one on Chestr.r.

Broad cement walks lead from Maple Avenue and Martin Street to the mam entrance on Chester.

When the High School was being built, the ground floor was placed at the street level and the yard was terraced to the lower windows. All of the windows on the lower floor have iron grating over them for general security.

As one enters the building, he stands for a moment in the entrance way, to get a general view of the school. On the wa11 at the r ight is a bronze tablet which gives the name of the school, the date of its completion and various other interesting facts.

One observes that the entrance is rather like a landing, for steps lead from it to the ground floor and up to the first floor. A wide corridor, running the entire length of the building is found on a11 floors. Numerous dark green lor•kers are provided along the walls on the first and second floors for the pupils' wraps, books, and so forth. The floors in the classrooms are of maple while those in the corridors are terrazzo. The fact that the corridors are made of terrazzo and are cleaned with a vacuum cleaner is an aid in sanitation.

The Domestic Science, Domestic Art, Manual Training, Physics and Chemistry rooms are on the ground floor; the Library, the office of the Superintendent, Junior High Session Room, the Gymnasium, which is also the Auditorium, are on the first floor; the Senior High Session Room, entrance to the Running Track which forms the balcony of the Auditorium, and the Horticulture Room are on the second floor. Classrooms as well are found on all floo!'S. You climb the stairs leading to the first floor and find the office of che Superintendent at the right. The pneumatic clock which controls the movements of the clocks in all the rooms and ha11s of the building and rings the gongs for assembling the classes, the switch-board for the telephone system which connects all the rooms to the office and to each other and the fire-proof vault for the preservation of records are all found in the officer The library opens into the office and also into the main ha11. It has fire-proof shelves for the books and is we11 equipped with reference books.

It is in the library that one perhaps notices the system of indirect lighting which is in all the other rooms as well.

The Junior High Session room, three class rooms, the clock room, and the Auditorium or Gymnasium are all on the first floor.

The Auditorium is equipped with a splendid stage and seats about one

thousand people. The balcony above and around the sides of the Auditorium is used as a running track for the Gymnasium and a gallery when the Auditorium is crowded. The gymnasium apparatus is suspended on ropes and 2an be pulled up near the ceiling when not in use.

Half-way up the stairs coming from the Maple Avenue entrance is seen the Teachers' Room, while at the head of the stairs, on the left is the Hospital, a room similar in size to the Teachers· Room below.

At the right on the second floor is the Agricultural Room with an iron stairway to the greenhouse on the roof. A moving picture machine is in the booth opening from it.

All floors are furnished with the most up to date lavatories, drinking fountains, etc. It is estimated that the plumbing alone in the building cost over $10,000.

The Senior High Room, entrance to the running track, the Drawing Roo'11 and five class rooms are also on the second floor.

On the ground floor at the south end of the corridor are the Physics and Chemistry Laboratories and the science recitation room.

This recitation room has raised seats, a lantern for the showing of slides, and a large lecture table with every convenience for demonstration work.

The Physics Room joins this. Each table, of which there are six or more, has e'.ectricity and gas. A dark room for the development of pictures, and a storage room open from the laboratory. It is said that this Physics Laboratory is one of the best in the state.

Across the hall is the Chemistry Laboratory. It has four large electrically ccntrolled hoods which take the poisonous vapors from the room and discharg·<'s them on the roof. Most schools do not have such equipment. Each table llds hot and cold water. Like the Physics Room there is also a developing room and a storage room.

The Cafeteria, kitchen, and Domestic Science Laboratories are all on the left. Hot, wholesome lunches are served daily in the Cafeteria at cost. It is interesting to note that the average price for luncheon last year was 17c. l'he Cafeteria seats about eighty and is self-supporting.

The locker and shower rooms for both boys and girls and the room for the swimming pool are beyond the Domestic Science Laboratory.

Just across the hall is the fine Manual Training Room, with the well outfitted Domestic Art Room around the corner. There are also three class rooms on the ground floor.

With a thoroughly satisfied air one leaves this building, feeling it is perfectly adapted to the uses for which it was constructed.

14istnry nf t4r 1Birmiu9qa1u ~rqnnls Piety Hill or what is better known as Birmingham is one hundred years old. The name was changed by an early settler who founded a factory and thought that in time it would be as great as Birmingham, England, his old home.

From the very first Birmingham has had very good schools with gra<les higher than the eighth, but no one graduated from the twelfth grade until 1880. That year the superintendent arranged the subjects for Edward Bo(hne who received the first diploma of graduation from the Birmingham High School.

After that there were six or seven in each class who took the full course. fhe pupils came from Royal Oak, Walnut Lake, Troy, Big Beaver, Southfield, Clawson, Warren and Pontiac.

The first public school was in a rented log house on Woodward Avenue near the place where the theater now stands. It was organized in 1834. Lerr1uel Partridge was the first teacher. A private school for boys, called anAcatlemy, was started by a minister of the United Presbyterian Church and a select private school was also opened.

The second public school of which we have record was in a frame builclin~ north of the Baldwin High on the corner of Maple and Chester. The tuition here for the students out of town was half a cord of good wood cut just ri ~l1t for the stove and corded in the school house. The third school was the little yellow brick house at the top of the hill on West Maple. It was built in 18fi5.

School was held here for fourteen years.

In 1867 Mr. Roland Trowbridge helped to raise twelve thousand dollars to erect a new school building which was finished in 1869 and is now part of the Hill School. The only entrance then was at the east side. There was a wing at the west but it was not as large as the present west wing. When the school was but a few years old a great cyclone went through Birmingham and tore the northeast corner from the building. This was during the summer vacation and the building was soon repaired.

Mr. Bemis was the first superintendent of the new school, The tuition at that time was a fee of five dollars a term and there were three terms in one year. The bell which we hear every morning has been ringing from the belfry of the Hill School since it was built forty years ago. Chapel exercises were started about 1880. At that time the High School would assemble in one room every morning to hear a chapter from the Bible read, sing a couple of hymns and repeat the Lord's Prayer.

There were two grades in each room until 19()3 when on account of t.h{' increase in number of students the west wing was torn down and the building rebuilt as we now see it. At that time the High School occupied a large room at the west, as the session room, and all but two other rooms on the t:>p

floor and had two laboratories in the basement. There were four courses offered to students: Latin, which included four years study of the classical subjects; Scientific,, which emphasized modern languages and sciences; Engiish, with no foreign language, and Engineering which made a specialty of work in mathematics. AU students were required to study English and certa~n other courses prescribed by the Board of Education.

In 1913 on account of the increased enro11ment of students the Barnum School was built for part of the lower grades. Thus there was more room f)r the High School and more attention could be given to each grade.

In 1917 the Baldwin School was planned and built for the Senior and Junior High. Martha Baldwin donated the residue of her estate toward building the new school. Enough money was raised in addition by bond issues to build it as it now stands. The tuition was raised to $50 a year,. Tr.is was caused by many new improvements and advantages which are found in the school.

The Baldwin High School is on the approved list of North Central Schools and its graduates are received on diploma by a11 colleges and universities in the North Central Association. The school offers courses in Eng:ish, History, Languages, Mathematics and Science, and Vocation work in Manual Training, Domestic Science, Domestic Art, Drawing and Music. Gymnasium work 1s required from all students in the Junior High.

It was a warm day in September when we, the class of June, 1919, first surveyed that long, steep hill which seemed to be the only path by which we might attain our greatest desires. But then the ascent did not seem so difficult. There seemed to be many resting places, many by-paths of pleasure which might be taken.

We could not see those large rocks and rough stones known as "English" t:.'1d "Algebra" strewn in our path. All we perceived were the grassy plains called ·'class parties" and the dignity we were to enjoy as Freshmen.

Not quite as green as the average "Freshie", yet each one thought he was Somebody, with a big S, and expected to be treated as such. Imagine our disappointment and chagrin when we were not even noticed by the higher classmen, except as the subjects of many old and a few new jokes.

In October of our Freshman year, our class was organized and we were really something besides a crowd of boys and girls totally uninterested in the doings of any except our intimate friends. During this first year we raised a good amount of class spirit and "pep" and held many lively, noisy class meetings, all of which were for the purpose of planning class parties. Will anyone forget that Freshman sleigh ride?

We also came upon the first rocks, over which we had to climb. We later learned that these were by far the worst. Many of our members slipped and fell and it was with our ranks sadly depleted that we entered our Sophomore year.

This year the remaining members struggled on, still trying to live up to their past record and avoid "flunks." But try as you may, the inevitable will happen. Still more received beautifully colored slips, pink or blue, and dropped behind to join the oncoming class.

It was in our Junior year that we entered the new Baldwin High School, a building modern in every respect. How proud we were! We no longer had to have the Freshmen in Assembly with us. They were in Junior High.

The Junior play was the next subject of interest. "The Spark of Life"' was given and the acting was unparalleled. In fact, it was the best class play ever produced.

The last event of the year was the Junior-Senior reception. This was a most enjoyable and memorable occasion.

Last September we returned to school and assumed our position as Seniors.

We found, to our amazement and joy that some of our old-time classmates were proudly displaying hard-earned credits which proclaimed them to be eligible Seniors. We soon had a class meeting and elected our officers. They were: President, Claude Morrow; Vice President, Margaret Boss; Secretary, Bonar Vanzandt; and Treasurer, Linton Carter.

The Annual was also started in a short time. Many preceding classes had started one, but never brought it to completion. So the class of 1919 had a chance to prove that, unlike other classes, they finished whatever they starte,l.

trophe. Miss Stauch, our principal and Senior advisor, was going to leave.

We were filled with dismay. It seemed as though it would be impossible to find anyone to take her place. We know now that our fears were ungrounded.

Miss Schlaack admirably fills the position which Miss Stauch held. But in later years I know we'll all look back with loving remembrance on that teacher who helped us over the "stepping-stones" of our first years of High School, and with her broad views consoled us when our feet slipped on their mossy backs.

The Senior play was next considered, and after many alterations and discussions was finally decided upon. "The Private Secretary" will certainly show what our former training and natural ability along dramatic lines has done for the class.

The class colors, maize and blue; the flower, a daffodil; and the motto, "Impossible is Un-American," have finally been decided upon. We realize now, that in all our past years of school life we have unconsciously lived up to that motto which we have at last chosen.

We are now finishing the last chapter of our high school life and when we have become successful in years to come, we will look back with thanks to our instructors, who have done their utmost to put us where we now stand--0n the top of the long, steep hill; and in the years to come we will forget the cobblestones and our only thought will be loyalty to our B. H. S. D. Weaver.

the exclusive shadowing of all the would-be skippers from school. This agency has outposts stationed at various points around the mill pond and Quarton Subdivision as a measure of precaution.

Arthur Tuggy is a E:cientific farmer with a wonderful model farm located a mile from Birmingham with special delivery to town of all fresh things Art driving, of course.

Bang!! and another of Margaret Boss's chemica1 factories went up in smoke. But what's a little thing like a factory or two blown up in the life of a budding chemist.

In the far Arctic Circle the list of Christian converts is growing daily, largely due to the persuasive smile of the charming missionary, Edith Burnett, who is stationed there.

"Della's Delight" is the market name for the gum of Della's invention that will dissolve instantly upon a teacher's discovery.

Mary Manchester is a famous criminal lawyer, and according to th€' g-old lettering on her office door she is fully capable of freeing the most crooked of crooks.

The Physiography class of Monroe High School pays strict attention to their studies- being under the surveillance of Gladys Rockwell. Gladys chose physiography to teach because of her fondness for nature. You remember her habit of falling down to meet Mother Earth in basket ball.

Claude Morrow is the handsome floorwalker at "Wanamakers Women's Clothes" store at Philadelphia. Since his connection with this firm its numuer of customers has increas::!d ten per cent. Poor Claude is slightly deaf now.

This affliction is caused by the numerous, needless questions with which the charming man is pestered.

Martha Baynes, an old pupil of Miss Martini, is an interior decorator with a studio in the Field Building. Her first commission was to redecorate the Johnston-Shaw dance hall.

"Only a nickel, a half a dime, five cents, the twentieth part of a dollar," cries "Nick" Carter, the famous "barker" at Hagenback and Wallace's notorious circus. It was largely due to "Nick's" early training as the high school yellmaster that led to his taking up this time honored career.

Howard McKinley and James Baynes, in order to flee the abundant attentions with which the high school girls inflicted them,. have established a monastery for bachelors on the Waterford Hill near Clarkston.

Dorothy Tracy is an authoress, and has lately added to the world's literature by publishing a book entitled "Bluffing Through Blue Books." This book is especially recommended to all high school libraries.

Rolland Reynolds is the inventor and sole distributor of Reynold's Reliable Tonic," containing fifty per cent hot air. Rolland insists that it was due to this tonic that he was so successful in acquiring ads for the Baldwinian back in 1919.

"Reddick and Parks" is the name of the most popular vaudeville team on the present day circuit. The S. R. 0. sign is always in evidence at the theat~r that books their act

Ida Skrine is teaching school near Big Beaver. Ida felt the call of the little red school house and answered it nobly.

Qtalruhar nf 1£uruta Peace Day was a great day! It came just after the harassing· midsemester exams, so we were doubly jubilant. The big Baldwin Auditorium, that had never before been used as an assembly place for all of the schools because no appropriate time has presented itself, was filled with the pupils and teachers of all three schools, and such a gala time as we had, singing, yelling and gi,1ing thanks for the great victory. Then the schools, in a body, marched down town and performed a snake dance on the corner. Of course you know how the bells rang and the whistles blew. It was the same everywhere. How glad we are to have been alive to witness that clay of all days!

The footba~l dance, given in the gym just before Christmas, was a grand success. The gym was beautifully decorated and Stone's popular orchestra furnished the best dance music ever! The football boys and their guests all spent a most enjoyable evening.

On the fiftenth of January the School Board gave the teachers of all the Birmingham schools a delicious dinner in the school cafeteria. The members of the School Board with their wives and the teachers were present. Mr. Vliet, the Superintendent of Schools, Miss Stauch, our Session Room teacher and Principal, who was about to leave us at that time, and Mr. Toothacker, who is our new principal, were called upon to deliver brief but delightful speeches.

Mr. Harris, the President of the School Board, also spoke a few moments.

'The teachers wish the Board would "do it again."

During the small stretch of skating weather which was perfect while it lasted, the classes rejoiced, threw dull care to the winds, and skated!

The Juniors opened this gay season by giving the Seniors a chicken dinner skating party, which was needless to say, an immense success. The dinner was served in the Cafeteria at school and Norman Schlaack and Claude Morrow produced after dinner speeches. Skating took place on the pond after dinner and gay revelry held sway till the "wee sma' hours."

The Sophomores closed this season with a skating party at Wing Lake about four miles from town. A truck was used to convey the laughing, smging crowd to the lake. There, a fire was built and delicious, "juicy dogs" were roasted (and disposed of). The lake was in ideal condition and we skated till we could skate no more.

Miss Neva Greene, the director of music in the schools, presented a wonderfully pretty and successful operetta, "The Land of Sometime," in the auditorium Thursday evening, March 20. About four hundred children from Barnum and Hill schools took part in the play which consisted of about twenty choruses, as many dances and drills, some speaking and three solos. It wac.: a grand success from beginning· to end and the twelve hundred people who

packed the room received full value for their money, while the unfortunates who were turned away went mourning from the place. A goodly sum of one> hundred and ten dollars was netted. We wish to highly commend the children for their unusually good performance and we feel that Miss Greene is worthy of more praise than we can ever express.

We are looking forward to an interesting Art Exhibit next month on the eighteenth. Mrs. Fontaine of the Fontaine Co. is furnishing the pictures whicli are to be reproductions of the Old Masters. Miss Martini has charge of the exhibit and Miss Greene has charge of the musical part of the program that is to follow. Some Art tableaux are to be presented also and Miss Fontaine is planning to deliver a speech upon Art. We know we shall enjoy this exhibit and program.

The chorus under Miss Greene's direction is planning to give a Patriotic Pageant, "To Arms For Liberty," later in the spring. At present we are unable to announce the date of the Pageant but we are sure that a rare musical treat is in store for us .

The Senior class will present "The Private Secretary" for its annual play, and the Junior class a play to be selected later.

The lecture course given in the auditorium under the direction of the Board of Education was very successful. The first number was Irvin Cobb, who gave a vivid word picture of his recent trip to the battlefields of France.

The Means-Anderson Concert Company and the Chicago Saxophone Sextette pleased everyone. Packard, the cartoonist, closed the course.

AN "S" LESS WORLD How important is the letter "S" without which we could have neither school nor sundaes. There would be neither sadness nor sorrow and a lacK of skating, sharks and scholars. There would be an utter absence of sense and satisfaction. Society would disappear. Water would remain but the sea would be no more. War would seem strange without soldiers, sailors, submarmes, superdreadnoughts and searchlights. The disappearance of science would be compensated by the riddance of silliness, sneakiness and snobbery. We would go without steak, salad, spaghetti and would have no supper. We would lack spoons, saucers, shakers, although knives, forks and plates would be tail-lcsc::.

Stuttering and stammering would not exist as would be the case with sparrows, sweets, smoking and sickness. Shows, but not theaters or "movie;:;" would become extinct while silence and soup would become defunct. Even the U. S. A. would be hit hard in the center. Seals and straps, salesmen, sewers and saloons would vanish. No one would be annoyed by sandwiches, steering gear, savages or sausages. Silver, sulphur, stone, stores, sleet, snow, sunstroke and simplicity would be obsolete. We would undergo many hardships, such ::is doing without salt, syrups, sugar and sodas. Last but not least we would not have our teachers, Miss Schlaack, Miss Isherwood, Miss Sharpe, Miss Blakeslee, Miss Higgins and Miss Densmore. These are but a few of the perils which the removal of only one twenty-sixth of the alphabet would cause.

LITERARY The first Literary meeting of this season was held December 5th, 1918.

At this meeting we elected the following officers: Margaret Boss- Secretary.

Linton Carter President.

Stewart Johnson Treasurer.

Sallie Brennan- Vice-President.

Max Purdy and Russell McGorey- Sergeants at Arms.

Since the election of officers there have been only two meetings.

On February thirteen we had our first progTam. We had several interesting papers read: among them were, The Life of Guynemeyer, by Mary Manchester and The Life of Thomas Edison by Edith Burnett. Beulah King read us a very interesting story of Bret Harte's. The Senior Enterprize was also a feature of the evening. A very delightful piano solo was rendered by Elsie Doying, a treat of which we never tire. At the close of the meeting t:,e entire audience rose and sang the "Maroon and White."

March seventeen the second meeting took place. It was largely a musical program. Among the numbers were, a duet by Orlou Schlaack and Katherine Trumbull, piano solos by Mildred Kemp and Katherine Trumbull. Two very fine papers were read by Helen Walker and Elsie Doying. Mr. Toothacker gave us an illustrated lecture on the Southwest Wonderland. The crowning feature of the evening was the Junior Outcast wh ich everyone greatly enjoyP,l.

We are planning on more meetings and hope to have larger crowds than on the preceding nights.

SENIOR Y. M. C. A. GROUP The Senior Y. M. C. A. Group held its first meeting· of the year on Monday, October 29, 1918, at 7:30. A large number of members were present. Mr. J. H. McBride, our leader for the year, was t~ere to start us off with a rush.

At this meeting the following officers were elected: President- Linton Carter.

Secretary Norman Parks.

Vice President- Leonard Fyfe.

Treasurer- Grover Cook.

Chairman Athletic Committee Lloyd Smith.

We also decided to hold our meetings on Tuesdays.

On Friday, November 29, our President and Secretary, r epresenting the group, left for the Sixteenth Annual Older Boys' State Conference held November 29th to December 1st at Jackson. They returned on Monday with a broader vision of life and the spirit to do things, the spirit of the Conference.

On Friday evening, December 6th, the entire group went to Highland Park for supper as the gue:,.ts of the Highland Park High School Discussion Group. We had a fine supper and afterwards captured the large side of the score in a game of basket ball.

Tuesday evening, February 25th, we acted as hosts to the Highland Park Group, at a supper in our High School Cafeteria. After supper Highland Park won the basket ball game.

Class Work MANUAL TRAINING

•

Courses in Manual Training and Mechanical Drawing were organized both in the grades and high school two years ago.

The elementary Manual Training starts in the sixth and continues through the eighth grade. In the high school two courses are offered., Manual Training 9 and 10. The one year in Mechanical Drawing consists of five forty-five minute periods each week.

The course in Mechanical Drawing treats of practical problems used in drafting rooms, and is closely related to the first year college elementary engineering courses.

All Manual Training courses aim to teach the boys how to read drawings as well as to develop their handicraft.

A course in Pattern Making was organized this year which treats of elementary problems and aids in clarifying our Mechanical Drawing.

"Projects for Beginning Woodwork and Mechanical Drawing" has proven of exceptional value in introducing, in a systematic manner, the subject matter of woodworkin g. Before each project is built, a Mechanical Drawing of the object must be drawn, including a bill of material, which greatly aids in forcing the boy to interpret his drawing.

MATHEMATICS The mathematics required for graduation consists of a year and a half of Algebra, and one year of Plane Geometry. In addition the following elective courses are offered: Solid Geometry, Advanced Algebra, and Trigonometry.

There have been forty enrolled in these three courses during the year.

Room 212 is a large, airy, well-lighted room with ample board space, offering the best conditions under which to work.

DOMESTIC ART (SEWING) The aim of this work is to develop the artistic sense, appropriateness m dress, good judgment· in the purchasing of materials, and technical skill in the planning and construction of garments. Emphasis is placed on simplicity, artistic lines and color combinations. The work is intended to meet two needs: home use ancf _preparation for further study.

LATIN The aim of all the Latin courses is to make the Latin language liked for itself, at the same time showing how much the modern world owes the ancient.

Special attention is given to the real meaning of the many English derivatives from Latin. Caesar has been especially interesting the past few years, Eince the battleground of the Great War is, in great part, the same as that of Ca~sar's campaigns. Names of Gallic tribes and rivers are names of modern French cities and rivers today. Ancient and modern methods of warfare have oeen compared, and charts, showing the relation of Latin to practical life, made. Cicero affords excellent opportunities for comparisons between ancient and modern customs, laws and politics.

• PHYSICAL SCIENCE The Physical Science department is supplied with two general laboratories, a lecture room, two stock rooms and two dark rooms, The equipment is complete for offering courses in Physics and Chemistry. In Physics a year's work is offered supplemented by liberal experiments in mechanics, heat, light, sound, and electricity. The equipment for work in electricity is particularly complete. In the physical laboratory courses, much interest has been shown in the manufacture of apparatus, among the most notable pieces being a fireless cooker made by Claribell Carson, a trolley car system by Hugh Purdy and Rolland Reynolds, a variable pendulum with range from two meters down, with electrical contact operating a telegraph sounder. This was made by Bonar Vanzandt and Margaret Boss. An apparatus for study comparison of densities of solutions made by Ruth Parks and a switch boarcV made by Claude Morrow, Lester Looney and Floyd Lucas. On this board are mounted a volt-meter and ammeter for A. C. and similar D. C. instruments and switches, a transformer, and an electrolytic rectifier.

The chemical laboratory has the usual equipment and is supplied with five hoods ventilated by forced draft controlled by an electric motor. Two years of work in Chemistry are offered.

The lecture room has raised seats for students and a splendid lecture table supplied with gas, water and electricity. A special table for the stereopticon is mounted in the rear of this room and an 18-inch hanging globe and other apparatus are found here.

PHYSICAL TRAINING- GIRLS The Physical Training work for girls in the high school includes Swedish gymnastics, fo1k dancing, apparatus work and games. Before beginning the work each girl is given a physical examination and in some cases a medical examination.

We have a fine shower room in connection with a splendid locker room, and after strenuous exercise it is a benefit as well as a delight to mo"t g-'irls to avail themselves of the privileges of the showers.

DOMESTIC SCIENCE Domestic S"ience was introduced into the curriculum of the Baldwin School last year. It is available for girls in all grades included in the Junior and the Senior High Schools. This year a course has been arranged for boys and ten boys have taken this opportunity to learn some of the elements of cookery.

The aim of the course is to teach the girls the principles of food and its proper preparation, its care and its cost. Besides the study of foods, the girls are taught marketing, general care of the home and household management.

FRENCH DEPARTMENT French was introduced only three years ago in Birmingham and now there are about 50 studying it. We have two years of it effective for Juniors and Seniors. In the first year we emphasize pronunciation, conversation, arnl grammar and usually read some short stories or plays near the end of the year.

In the second year the composition and conversation are more advanced. We read selections from various types of French literature such as comedies or tragedies either in the form of a play or a novel.

THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT It is the desire of the English department to offer to the student of the B. H. S. the opportunity to obtain such a knowledge of correct English that he will be able to meet the demands of business life, and such a foundation in the study of the classics that he will be able to enjoy what is greatest and best among our literary treasures.

Letter writing, spelling, written themes and oral compositions are emphasized and pupils are encouraged to master every detail that enters into perfection a:ong each of these lines, as far as his age and development will permit.

Two days each week are devoted to the study of the classics. The purpose of this work is not only to help the pupil know' the selection read but also to inspire in him the desire to read other writings and study other masterpieces.

English is required through the Junior year and an elective course is offered in the Senior year,- the first semester devoted to drill in Oratory and Argument, the second to American Literature.

CHORUS AND GLEE CLUB The Junior High School Chorus has seventy-six members. The war pageant, "To Arms For Liberty," by Catherine Bryce is to be produced in June at the time of graduation. The twenty characters are to be selected from the ninth grade class which graduates from the Junior High School and the mus;:: is to be furnished by the chorus.

There are twenty girls in the Senior High Girls' Glee Club. The members have been working on such music as "The Little Tin So1dier" by Molloy, "The Boat Song" by Offenbach, "Japanese Love Song" by Thomas, "When Twilight Weaves" (Minuet) by Beethoven an:! "Croon, Croon" by Rich.

HISTORY The history department offers courses in World History and American History to students in the Junior High School and courses in Ancient, Mediaeval, Modern and American History to students in the Senior High School.

There are in all one hundred and forty students enrolled in the various classes.

A cork bulletin board has been built this year which has added to the appearance of the history room and has been very convenient for displaying interesting pictures, news items, maps, etc.

PHYSICAL TRAINING- BOYS Classes in boys' Physical Training starting with the seventh grade have been offered and are in session throughout the year.

The work is selected with the purpose in view of increasing health, improving bodily form, and dexterity, and the formation of character. To this end a physical and medical examination of each boy is given. Swedish gy01nastic exercises are used in part, together with light and heavy apparatus work including dumb-bells, Indian clubs, wands and the mat, horse, rings and bars.

Athletics are carried on under this department and Foot ball, Basket ball and Base ball teams are organized. To these games is left t'he all important character building. Good clean sportsmanship with the elements of teamwork and loyalty are the results.

AGRICULTURE In no part of the world's activities has greater progress been made in the last quarter of a century, than in the science and art of agriculture. Farming of today has become a complex as well as a profitable business. It may well be called a profession and the farmer of today should be as well prepared for his work as the doctor or teacher. If the boy on the farm could learn all that is necessary to be a successful farmer., there would be little need to attempt to teach agriculture in the school. To meet the demand of those interested in agriculture a year's course is offered.

In connection with the agriculture work there is a green house in which many profitable and interesting experiments are carried out, which emphasize the various points brought out in the clas!;'.-room. The course is preceded by a semester's work in botany and a semester's work in biology wh"ch give the student an excellent basis for the agricultural work. It is contemplated that the course shall be lengthened and eventually a four year course in agriculture will be offered.

A high school Agricultural Society has been organized. There seems to be a great deal of interest manifested which will develop as the association grows. lt is composed of all high E:chool people interested in agriculture and meetings are he:d every two weeks. Timely topics are discussed which often give the person ideas that perhaps were not quite clear in the class-rooms The Agriculture work has a very promising future.

BOYS BASKET BALL The basket ball season of 1919 has been a very successful one.

For the first game the boys played Holly. Holly was leading until the last quarter, when Birmingham rallied and won 24-23.

The game with St. Mary's college was a 10-26 victory for them. Pontiac's Second was then walked over by a 24-8 score. Wyandotte came here and won 14-22. Then the Birmingham A. C. game was on. How the men had boasted!

The score was 34• 7 and the men had the 7. The next game Birmingham gave H. S. of Commerce the 11 out of the 21-11 score. Royal Oak appeared on February 14. Their valentine was 19 points, but the joy was taken out because Birmingham's was 40. H. S. of Commerce came for revenge but forgot and let Birmingham get the big end of the 36-19 score. The Nordstrum game was won by that school 19-29. The team lost to the Wyandotte veterans 6-17. In the M. S. N. C. tournament Birmingham won third place. On March 25, the Royal Oak boys led until the last few minutes. Then Birmingham rallied and won 16-13. The last game was played on March 27. The first quarter Holly led 4-9, but as usual Birmingham soon warmed up and were victorious 31-19.

GIRLS BASKET BALL Birmingham girls started the basket ball season by journeying to Holly where besides being royally entertained they won, 13-5, an easy victory.

The next game was against a professional team, the Wandersees, of Detroit. Birmingham lost 21-16, after a hard fought game.

Wyandotte came next playing here. The score was 19-14 and Wyandotte was not in the lead.

Next came the journey to Monroe and we lost by one point 20-19, but we forgot our disappointment in the festivities which followed the game.

Royal Oak Independents came to Birmingham expecting an easy victory, but were doomed to disappointment as we won 23-20.

Monroe came next and Birmingham having a new "star" forward, Dorothy Cornell, were certain of being revenged for their former defeat. The score was 26-11, thus spoiling Monroe's hopes for State Championship.

When we went to Wyandotte a "Special" carried the teams and about one hundred and fifty "fans." We were defeated 17-16 after a l].ard, rough game.

At last the 25th of March arrived, the day of the game at Royal Oak. We again defeated the Independents 20-16.

The last game of the season was played on the Birmingham floor with Holly. But although we expected a hard game, the first few minutes were the only exciting part, as Birmingham had a big lead the remainder of the time, fina:ly winning 48-6.

Birmingham's total score was 200; their opponents' total score wa::; 131.

When the call for candidates for the football team was sounded it w.1s answered by about twenty-five fellows all eager to uphold the honor of the team of 1919. Seven veterans had been lost through graduation and the green material had to be given a thorough sifting. After a couple of weeks of practice under Coach Crowe the team was in training to meet Cass Tech., our first opponents.

The Detroiters were easily defeated by Birmingham whose weight and speed were dominant. Score 21-0.

Windsor Collegiate was the second team on the schedule. The prophecies for a hard game were answered when the Maroon and White came out on top by the score of 14-7.

After a short rest B. H. S. met Pontiac on the Barnum Field. It proved to be the best game of the season. Pontiac drew first blood when a drop kick netted three points. Birmingham, not content with this state of affairs, ran the ball over the goal line for- a touchdown, the score ending the first half 7-3 in our favor. The last half was a continual back and forth maneuver on the gridiron until an unavoidable fumble left the ball on Pontiac's thirty yard line.

Then by a clever trick Pontiac ran the ball down the field across the goal line winning the game 9-7.

The next two games were easy. Plymouth fell before us by the score of 64-0, and Northeastern was vanquished 46-0.

The final game of the season was played on Thanksgiving Day on Barnum Field during a steady drizzle. Royal Oak came with her usual "pep", which grew inaudible toward the end of the game. Our strong team easily defeated them 26-0. The only feature of the game was an eighty yard run by Lloyd Smith.

Although three veterans will be lost to the team, yet we expect it to make a good showing next year as there is much material available on the ,C'con<l team.
