LATEST NEWS BIRMINGHAM INTRODUCES NEW CITY LOGO
On Monday, April 25, 2022, the Birmingham City Commission unanimously approved a new city logo at the recommendation of the city’s Ad Hoc Wayfinding and Gateway Signage Committee (WGS). McCann Detroit designed the logo, which features an icon inspired by late Birmingham resident Marshall Fredericks’ “Freedom of the Human Spirit” sculpture in Shain Park.
The original “Freedom of the Human Spirit” sculpture was created for the New York World’s Fair in 1964. The sculpture was designed to depict human figures soaring as if in migratory flight with huge swans, an ancient symbol of eternal life, in honor of the New York World’s Fair theme of “Peace
through
Understanding”.
In
1983,
Marshall
Fredericks donated the design for this sculpture to his adopted hometown of Birmingham in honor of the city’s 50th
anniversary,
and
the
bronze
sculpture
was
commissioned by the City of Birmingham and dedicated in 1988. Marshall Fredericks resided in Birmingham with his wife Rosalind Cooke Fredericks until his death in 1998.
The new logo’s distinctive icon captures the essence and energy of a focal point in Shain Park, and when combined with the classic font for the city name, and balanced with the simple tagline, embodies the modern yet timeless nature of Birmingham. Learn more about the new City of Birmingham logo at www.bhamgov.org/logo.

PARKS & RECREATION ADAMS PARK UPDATE: CITY AWARDED $100,000 GRANT! The Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission recently awarded the City of Birmingham a grant of $100,000 for the Adams Park Development Project. Plans for enhancing the park were recently finalized, with construction set to begin this summer. Michael J. Dul & Associates, together and in cooperation with city staff, surrounding neighborhood associations, and Roeper School, developed the final plans and development drawings following extensive planning and public input opportunities. The city received significant public engagement via their public engagement platform, Engage Birmingham, at engage.bhamgov.org. Enhancements include a significant play area, a garden seating plaza, beautiful landscaping improvements with lots of new trees, an open grassy area large enough for a soccer field, a basketball court, shot put, discus, and a long jump area. Adams Park is located directly adjacent to Roeper School, located at 1051 Oakland Avenue. Through the city’s partnership with the school, the city provides maintenance, lawn care and sidewalk snow removal, and the 1.5-acre property serves as a public park. Roeper School is permitted to use the park during the school year for activities undertaken by the school. Current amenities include a soccer field, open space, and a play area. SOUTH OLD WOODWARD RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT Important infrastructure improvements are set to begin in downtown Birmingham. The South Old Woodward Reconstruction project is the third phase of downtown infrastructure improvements addressing aging infrastructure in the core of the downtown area. The project will reconstruct South Old Woodward from Brown Street to Landon Street, and will take place from approximately mid-May through mid-October. The City’s contractor, Warren-based Angelo Iafrate Construction Company, also managed the award-winning Old Woodward Reconstruction Project in 2018 (Phase 1) and the awardwinning Maple Road Reconstruction Project in 2020 (Phase 2). Similar to Phases 1 and 2, the South Old Woodward Reconstruction Phase 3 Project is driven by the need to replace existing water mains and sewer lines. In addition to new underground infrastructure, the project will also enhance the aesthetics and functionality of downtown Birmingham and improve walkability. Key elements in the design of the new streetscape include: Curb bumpouts at each intersection to improve crosswalks for pedestrians, mid-block crosswalks, raised planter beds and landscape features. Exposed aggregate concrete, granite bench seating areas and new street lights. Improved on-street accessible parking spaces, each served with an individual sidewalk ramp to improve conditions for those needing accommodations. Work will begin with the removal of trees in the project area during the week of May 2, and lane closures will begin during the week of May 16. One lane will be maintained south of Hazel for southbound travel during the majority of the project. Businesses will be open during construction, and the Birmingham Shopping District (BSD) will offer a variety of incentives throughout the project. New this year, the BSD will offer a texting service by TextMyGov which will be used to provide frequent updates to businesses within the construction area. Details about the project, shopper incentives and the detour map (coming soon) are available at www.bhamgov.org/oldwoodwardphase3. Residents and businesses are encouraged to sign up for weekly project updates at www.bhamgov.org/enews.

The patriotic program includes addresses of historical interest, popular songs, wreath laying at the monuments and live music provided by the Birmingham Concert Band Entertainers, featuring songstress Patty Ward. Civil War reenactors will assist in the service. In addition, the Friends of the Birmingham Museum will mark

presentation. At 11:30 a.m. they will conduct a tour of historic Greenwood Cemetery with emphasis on local heroes who have served our country. Family attendance is welcomed and veterans’ participation is encouraged.
The origin of Memorial Day dates back to 1868 when the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic (the fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans), General John A. Logan, designated May 30 “for the purpose of strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion (the Civil War).” The first service was held that year at Arlington Cemetery, already the site of over 20,000 burials. From that first “Decoration Day” to today, we honor all who served their country with Memorial Day.

FROM THE BIRMINGHAM FIRE DEPARTMENT IS THERE ANYTHING PARAMEDICS SHOULD KNOW IN AN EMERGENCY? COMPLETE THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL FORM! During a medical emergency, paramedics ask certain questions about previous medical history that could have already been answered. You should not have to waste time or get information that could have already been easily provided. Oftentimes, it’s hard for the patient to answer or communicate because they’re having a medical emergency. A delay could lead to increased time spent on scene instead of continuing quality care and treatment during the transport process. Thankfully, there are free tools available to help the public and paramedics expedite the patient care and transport process! A free website and app is available called Emergency Medical Form (EMF). EMF streamlines any information you choose to share with paramedics in case of an emergency. The form consists of the most common questions asked in case of an emergency. EMF allows you to fill out a form for yourself or family members. You control what information you want to share and can edit or update anytime. In the event of an emergency, local paramedics use a "View Only" version of EMF that allows them to search and access your form from any location. For those who prefer, there is a free magnetic pouch/paper version available at both Birmingham fire stations and located near the front entrances. The completed paper form and magnetic pouch can be placed on your refrigerator once complete. EMF was designed by a local Birmingham paramedic. Visit emergencymedicalform.com to learn more and sign up.
