CHIEF WELLS BECOMES VICE PRESIDENT OF SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN ASSOCIATION

Of Fire Chiefs

On Thursday, May 11, 2023 Chief Paul Wells was sworn in as the Vice President of the Southeastern Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs (SMAFC). SMAFC has made it their goal to promote the advancement and education of the fire service.

This is Chief Wells’ third year on the executive board which covers the largest region in Michigan – the area east of Lansing and south of Midland. Chief Wells’ goal is to continue to work with local fire chiefs and State officials on fire safety codes, and funding for training, recruitment, and retention of firefighters.

Remembering A Local Hero

On Sunday, May 21, 2023, the Birmingham Fire Department participated in a memorial service with the family members of Thomas M Brown Thomas tragically lost his life 50 years ago while fighting a basement fire on Brown Street on March 6, 1973. At the time of his passing, he was married and had a 3-year-old daughter named Jennifer His family and Birmingham firefighters shared stories and toured both stations, along with visiting the memorial wall of fallen Birmingham firefighters at Fire Station 1.

The City planted two apple trees at Fire Station 2 in Firefighter Brown’s honor. The apples from the trees will be harvested by current Birmingham firefighters and will serve as a remembrance of a fallen hero

Attending the ceremony were: Art Brown, Phil Brown, Jennifer Dugre, Susan Kaza, Pat Locke, Kathy Tasch, Ruth Westrick, Bill Westrick, Marcia Westrick, Paul Westrick, Angelina Brown, Stephanie Brown, Ed Brown, Jeff Brown, and Fran Davenport.
