LOCK YOUR VEHICLES AND TAKE VALUABLES INSIDE TIPS FROM COMMUNITY RESOURCE OFFICER, GINA MOODY The Birmingham Police Department works hard to keep our community safe. With the summer months in full swing, we have seen an increase in crimes of opportunity, specifically stolen vehicles and stolen property from vehicles. In 1736, one of our nation’s founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, famously stated, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” His words could not ring more true to this day. These crimes can be easily prevented if residents and guests of the City took the simple step of locking their vehicle's doors. Since January 2022, the police department has taken 40 reports of property stolen from vehicles. Of those 40 reports, 39 involved an unlocked vehicle or the open bed of a pickup truck or trailer. In other words, 97.5% of stolen property situations could have been avoided had residents simply locked their car doors. Along with property being stolen, 24 stolen vehicle reports have been taken since January, 18 of which since the beginning of June. Of the 24 stolen vehicles, 19 were taken with the key or key fob that had been left inside the vehicle. Help us eliminate opportunistic crimes by keeping valuables out of sight, locking vehicle doors and taking your keys with you. Our best asset in fighting crime is an informed, engaged public that works with the police department. If you see anything or anyone suspicious, please call Birmingham Dispatch immediately at (248) 530-1870.

GENEROSITY LEADS 1924 AMERICAN LaFRANCE FIRE ENGINE BACK TO BIRMINGHAM THANK YOU, BILL OLSEN & FAMILY Sometimes things find their way back home in interesting ways. In this instance, the 1924 American LaFrance Fire Engine that belonged to the City of Birmingham from 1924 through 1960, found its way back to the city thanks to the generosity of Birmingham resident Bill Olsen and his family. Bill's grandfather, Birmingham Fire Chief William G. Olsen ordered the LaFrance following a devastating fire in 1923. Bill's father, Merritt W. Olsen, purchased the engine for $435 in 1960, and restored it back to its original condition. After being in the family for many years, with a member of the Olsen family driving the engine during the annual Celebrate Birmingham Hometown parade each year, the Olsen family chose to donate the engine to the city. Watch the video below and hear Bill Olsen discuss the truck's restoration and his decision to donate it back to the city, hear Birmingham Museum Director Leslie Pielack discuss the history of the truck and the Birmingham Fire Department, and finally, Fire Chief Paul Wells discusses what this truck means to him and the entire department. Thank you, Bill Olsen and family!

"The truck needed to stay in Birmingham. To be here in Station 2 at Maple and Chesterfield, on display in this beautiful picture window, is a very fitting tribute for the truck, the fire department and all of the many fire fighters through the years." ~ Bill Olsen

BY NICHOLAS J. DUPUIS, PLANNING DIRECTOR BENEFITS OF ENERGY SAVING PRACTICES IN YOUR HOME While saving money is usually the most obvious and appreciated aspect of energy saving practices in the home, protecting the environment is an important positive by-product. According to research by Michigan State University: ·113 million residences account for approximately 22 percent of the energy used in the U.S. ·The average U.S. home heating and cooling system emits more than one-half billion tons of carbon dioxide, which contributes to air pollution and global warming. ·Electricity generated from fossil fuels for one home puts more carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air than two average cars. ·The average family spends more than $2,000/year on utility bills and wastes 30-50 percent of the energy it purchases. To get an idea of energy use at a home, an energy assessment or audit can be completed, which will pinpoint some key areas where energy is being lost in a home. One key area is insulation. Thirty-one percent of a home’s heat loss is through floors, walls and ceilings. Additional

Payments must be received by the City by August 31 in order to avoid penalty, so please plan ahead. When using online banking, please make sure you are using the correct address on the top of the bill. Also, make sure that the transaction will actually be a next-day ACH transaction. You will find a lot of valuable information on your property tax bill. Please take time to read the front and back of your bill. Many of the questions you may have can be answered by reading this content. The City provides many options for paying your tax bill. A payment drop box is located on the south side of City Hall near the back entrance. There is also a drive-up drop box located at the Henrietta entrance to the back lot behind City Hall.

Where do Native Americans fit into Birmingham’s story? Who are the people at the heart of Birmingham’s early Black history? SAVE THE DATE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD COMMEMORATION CEREMONY SATURDAY, SEPT. 17 AT 11 A.M. CEREMONY AT QUARTON LAKE PARK WITH TOUR OF GREENWOOD CEMETERY TO FOLLOW

Did you know the Greenwood Cemetery gravesites of Elijah Fish and George Taylor are now recognized on the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom? Please join us as we formally acknowledge the National Park Service’s listing with a commemorative event on Saturday, September 17, 2022. A brief program will take place at 11 a.m. at the north end of Baldwin Park at Quarton Lake (the corner of Oak and Lakeside), just one block from Greenwood Cemetery. A tour of the gravesites will take place immediately following the program. This important designation was approved following hard work and research by Birmingham Museum staff and volunteers, who were able to show the two men had direct connections to local anti-slavery efforts leading up the Civil War. Pioneer settler Fish was an active abolitionist, and Taylor himself escaped enslavement and followed the Underground Railroad through Michigan to freedom, becoming the first African American to own property in Birmingham. We look forward to seeing you on September 17th! Keep an eye on the museum’s webpage for event updates.
