AD HOC ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

On January 23, 2023, the City Commission unanimously passed a resolution declaring a climate emergency and enabling the Ad Hoc Environmental Sustainability Committee (the “ESC”) The city received 16 applications from residents wishing to serve on the ESC, all of whom possessed a wealth of knowledge in environmental sustainability with expertise in the following areas: energy, equity, civil/construction engineering, water quality, environmental engineering/consulting/law, recycling and solid waste.

City Commissioners and staff members were impressed with the skill set of each applicant, and grateful for the community’s support surrounding this important initiative During the City Commission meeting on Monday, March 27, 2023, the following residents were appointed to the Ad Hoc Environmental Sustainability Committee:
“This is an exciting time for the city," said Mayor Therese Longe. "The Ad Hoc Environmental Sustainability Committee will help formulate the city’s goals as it relates to developing a sustainability and climate action plan, and give input into the possible formation of a permanent board going forward.”
The work of the ESC will include a greenhouse gas emissions inventory to set a baseline and develop greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for 2030 and 2050, and the creation of a sustainability plan over a period of 18 months. Learn more about the committee at www bhamgov org/sustainability
