We’re home!

I’m absolutely delighted to be able to share our re-opening season with you.

Since starting as Artistic Director during our centenary year, I have been inspired by the legacy of Sir Barry Jackson, founder of The REP. It’s his founding principles of giving Birmingham the opportunity to see the world’s greatest plays alongside gambling on future talent that has guided me in putting together this season With this in mind, we are re-opening the theatre with a breadth and range of work that covers well-loved classics, greatest hits, familiar faces, and looking to the future with new plays, new companies and some brilliant collaborative and contemporary theatre-making across our three very distinct spaces. It’s particularly exciting to be launching the new 300-seat studio with a season of work spear-headed by a local artist with an international profile: Soweto Kinch. We continue our commitment to inspiring new regional voices and on REP Foundry and REP Pilot nights you’ll be the first to witness their works in progress.

Behind the scenes we continue our work with young people, and there’s work across the whole season for all ages.

The theatre has been refurbished and the auditoriums refreshed but it’s an empty shell without an audience. So, we very much look forward to welcoming you, not only to the shows, but to the public spaces where you will find a new bar and restaurant, places to sit and read or meet friends and gorgeous exhibitions.

We’re heralding a new beginning and we can’t wait to show you around.

Backstage Tours Have a Peek!

On selected Saturdays you can delve behind the scenes on our guided backstage tours. Visit the wig-room, wardrobe, workshop and wings; see the dressing rooms and maybe rub shoulders with an actor or stage manager for just £5 & £3 concessions.

Or have a Peek, A Pie & A Pint! After wandering the corridors of creativity and sharing our interesting anecdotes you may be ready for a pie and a pint in our new restaurant. For just £12 & £10 concessions you can tour and then tuck in!

All tours take place at 11.00am on selected Saturdays and last approximately 90 minutes. Look out for the BT symbol in the diary pages of this brochure for precise dates.

The STUDIO New to The REP for 2013 is a modern, accessible, flexible 300-seat studio theatre, shared with the Library of Birmingham.

The STUDIO helps us realise a long-held ambition to programme mid-scale works within our building. This creates exciting possibilities to produce and present a wide range of new plays and classics that benefit from an intimate relationship with the audience.

12 to 28 September Award-winning jazz and hip hop star Soweto Kinch opens our first ever show in The REP’s newest space, The STUDIO, with an incredible staged performance of his latest album. With jazz improvisation, a driving hip hop score and choreography from a pioneer of British Hip Hop culture, Jonzi D. Inspired by The Seven Deadly Sins and Dante’s Inferno, Soweto performs the story of Mike Smith, a young, aspiring MC caught in a world of temptation where the boundaries of reality and fantasy collide.

An alto-saxophonist and MC, Soweto Kinch is one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians in both the British jazz and hip hop scenes. He has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and a MOBO for best Jazz Act in 2003 and 2007.

The Legend of Mike Smith promises to be an absorbing combination of music, animation and dance with long awaited, brand new material played live by Soweto and his band every night .

1 to 16 November When the seemingly perfect Tartuffe ingratiates himself with the wealthy Orgon and his mother Madame Pernelle, he is soon welcomed into their home and into their lives.

His combination of charm, respectability and religious authority proves so irresistible that he is eventually promised the hand of Orgon’s daughter in marriage.

But the rest of Orgon’s family have grave doubts – is there more to Tartuffe than meets the eye? When the threat of eviction for the family and imprisonment for Orgon become apparent, is it all too late to find out?

This hilarious and irreverent whirlwind of lies, religious hypocrisy and family feuds features one of theatre’s most perfect comedy creations, the beguiling Tartuffe.

This new production of Molière’s famous comedy is directed by The REP’s Artistic Director, Roxana Silbert.

Bedlam A Festival Of Mad Ideas

The Anatomy Of Melancholy The Anatomy Of Melancholy has been described as “the greatest book ever written”. Nearly 400 years old, it is an fascinating attempt to identify the causes, symptoms and cures for all kinds of melancholy. Written by vicar and librarian, Robert Burton, it contains all the wisdom of its age – arcane, outlandish and hilarious. Yet, amidst all the wild stories and suppositions, much of its advice remains as urgent and profound now as it did then.

Ten years ago a Serbian festival director challenged Stan’s Cafe to adapt this, his favourite book, for the stage, stating that they were the only company he could imagine pulling it off. So this is their attempt to bring The Anatomy Of Melancholy, perhaps the world’s most extraordinary self-help manual, to the stage.

366 Days Of Kindness

In response to the riots of August 2011, Bernadette Russell committed to be kind to a stranger every single day for a year.

This show tells the heartbreaking, surprising and challenging stories of that year, which began with burning buildings and ended with the flame of the Olympic torch, against a global backdrop of social unrest and economic crisis.

Part storytelling, part stand-up, part live documentary, featuring a dinner party with surprise guests including the Dalai Lama, Aristotle and Princess Diana, this show attempts to answer the question: is it possible to change the world just by being kind?

On a cold, bleak, biting Christmas Eve seven years after the death of his business partner, Jacob Marley, London’s meanest miser Ebenezer Scrooge is his usual grumpy old self.

Scrooge hates Christmas, calling it ‘humbug!’. His only act of seasonal generosity is to offer his poor overworked clerk Bob Cratchit, Christmas day off.

But as the clock strikes midnight his world will be turned upside down. Three ghosts are visiting him to offer visions of a happy past, a harsh present and a horrific future.

REP Foundry Artist Development Programme Offers a new, year-long development programme which supports emerging artists through a combination of workshops, making and sharing work and professional mentoring. As The REP moves into the next phase of a remarkable history it is looking for emerging directors, writers, theatre-makers and companies from across the West Midlands to make the journey with us.

REP Foundry Nights Foundry Nights are scratch nights of work-in-progress. They are a resource for theatre-makers and offer audiences a unique opportunity to see the first outing of an idea and lend an insight into how new theatre is made. There will be Foundry Nights in The Door on 31 October and 28 November 2013.

Speakeasy Theatre-Maker's Network Speakeasy is a networking forum for West Midlands based theatre artists and other practitioners who are interested in knowing more about each other and the local scene.

Speakeasy events are hosted by The REP and provide a lively debate on current issues, an opportunity to test out new ideas and practical advice from people in the know. Speakers have included theatre producers, independent artists and representatives from funding bodies.

Come Heavy Sleep

13 and 14 December Come Heavy Sleep is a passion-fuelled murder story that takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s Othello.

This work-in-progress performance tests ideas that will eventually develop into a large-scale ensemble spectacle, fronted by the band The Come Heavies with bold choreography, chopped-up narrative and stunning visuals.

She will invite children to listen, watch and take part in an interactive theatre experience which brings the story of Hansel and Gretel to life.

They will meet and take the role of different characters from within the story, eventually helping make a decision that pushes sibling rivalry to its limits.

15 year old Harriet is wrestling with an essay on Hamlet while her alcoholic father, Frank, is dying upstairs. In the aftermath of his death, Harriet’s tale is drawn into a strangely familiar story: a suburban Hamlet.

In different guises here come Claudius, Gertrude, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Polonius and Ophelia. Even the travelling players take a part.

The reading will be followed by a Q&A with director Tristram Powell in conversation with Marilyn Imrie.

Our Access Register is a service for people with disabilities and those people who book tickets on behalf of people with disabilities. You are advised to become an Access Register Member to enable us to get to know your preferences, send you appropriate information and ensure that our services are allocated fairly amongst those who need them most.

Tickets reserved by telephone, email or in person must be paid for within three working days of the reservation. If your reservation is made within three days before the performance, you have until one hour before the start of the performance to pay in full.

We are gradually relocating The BOX, our box office service, to our home in Centenary Square.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Broad Street. We now share a main entrance with our new neighbours, the Library of Birmingham. This can be found opposite the open-air amphitheatre in Centenary Square. Once through the revolving doors take a sharp left and head towards our familiar arched doorways.

You’ll pass The STUDIO Theatre on your right and a little further along, The TREATS, our ice cream & confectionery kiosk, before reaching our box office, The BOX.

As you move into our refurbished 1970’s building you’ll see that we’ve opened up our restaurant and foyer spaces, added a lift to all floors and improved our toilet facilities. Access to the cloakroom, The DOOR and to our largest theatre space, now renamed The HOUSE, remains as it was but if you visit the first floor you’ll find a new banqueting suite and more space to enjoy a drink from our interval bars.

The Access Register also provides you with a personal log-in giving you the freedom to book the access services referenced below, online through our website.

Physical Access The REP aims to be accessible and welcoming to everyone.

Bookings paid for by credit card or debit card will incur a card-handling fee of £1.00 per transaction (regardless of the number of tickets booked).

On occasion, exchanges may be available up to 48 hours before the performance.

Exchanges are only possible for the same production and will incur a fee of £2.00 per ticket exchanged.

A £1.00 postage charge will be added to your ticket order.

Please note:

All three of our theatre spaces have wheelchair spaces and assisting companion tickets can be booked by people with disabilities who require support.

Concessions are not available for all performances. They are limited and are therefore subject to availability. Only one discount per ticket applies. Not all concessions are available online.

Captioning and BSL Interpreted performances

Standby:

We offer a Captioning and BSL Interpreted performances on many of our productions. When booking, remember to request seats with the best view.

Audio Described and Touch Tours To help visually impaired people to fully enjoy theatre, we offer Audio Described and pre-show Touch Tours of props and costumes on stage.

Assistance Dogs Assistance dogs are welcome across the theatre. Please mention that you have an assistance dog when making your booking.

Available to under 16s, people with disabilities, unwaged and students, after 1pm on day of performance.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s definition of unwaged discount is a person who is in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance or Income Support. Proof of eligibility is required.
