Welcome to October’s edition of The Felixstowe Magazine Blimey! What a great summer we’ve had. At the time of this writing the sun is still shining giving us a good 20 degrees. Not sure how much longer it’ll last, but I hope you all had the chance to enjoy it!

It’s been a great month and I’d like to personally thank all of you for your support and lovely compliments with our new merged publication with the Town Crier. We continue to share the Town Crier’s news on page 10-13 with Doreen Savage’s, the Felixstowe Family History Society and more, so have a good read. Our What’s On Listings page has also become bigger so check it out. In the not too distant future we will have a new website which will keep you more up-to-date on local goings on, so please do feel free to contact us if you know of an event happening and want to get it promoted. No matter how little or large, if it’s charitable, community oriented or simply just bags of fun, then we’d love to know!

3 Celebrating one hundred years of international service, here is John Gooch, from our local Lions Club right here in Felixstowe...

The Lions Club of Felixstowe

The Felixstowe Lions Club started in 1978, thirty-seven years ago, and is part of Lions Clubs International, which celebrates a hundred years of service next year.

When we mention the Lions Club people in the town normally associate us with putting up the Christmas lights.

Since 1975 the town had no Christmas light display due to shortage of money and so, since 1978, we started a partnership with the Town Council to help with that so people can now enjoy the Christmas lights each year. The motto of the Lions is “We Serve.” All Lions members are unpaid volunteers and all money collected for charity is used solely for that purpose.

The club has several main fund-raising events including a yearly Pig Race, Christmas Raffle, Golf Day, Model Exhibition and Easter Egg Draws. We have a car boot every Saturday on the Sunday Market site during the summer. We also stage sales in the town centre, which are full of wonderful things for you to purchase. During its time, the Felixstowe Lions have helped to form the Woodbridge Lions, since1981, and also a Lioness Club for ladies.

The community side of our club is very active. We have a singer and keyboard player visit the care homes during the month all through the year, we also take a coach load of children and carers to the Great Yarmouth Circus with other Lions Clubs and we also take part in the annual World Wide Peace Poster competition for young people. The Club supports the community with practical and financial help where needed and will continue to do so in the same tenacious spirit we always have.

Local Cause With Christmas not too far away, here is a lovely concept, which you can join in on to spread the festive spirit at a time when others may not have someone to share it all with…

Be a Santa to a Senior

Local at-home care company, Home Instead Senior Care began this brilliant gift-giving where they joined forces with many organisations in Felixstowe including Queen’s Road Day Centre, The Salvation Army, HOPE Trust, The Hand in Hand Club, Parkinson’s Society and Age UK Suffolk, in order to identify local older people who otherwise might not receive a gift at Christmas.

Home Instead also worked in partnership with Marks and Spencer in Felixstowe, who organised a ‘Be a Santa’ Christmas tree in their store last December. The tree was decorated with gift tags and included the types of gifts older people would welcome. Generous members of the community were able to pick a gift tag and donate that particular item. Home Instead then beautifully wrapped the gifts and delivered them to older people across Felixstowe just in time for Christmas.

Owner of Home Instead, Chris Lye, said, “We provide care to older people in their own homes. Our clients are assured of regular company from their caregivers but we are hoping that ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ will allow us to reach out to older people in our community who, perhaps, don’t receive as many visitors as our clients and who would really appreciate knowing that local people are thinking about them this Christmas.”

There’s a brand new restaurant in Felixstowe… and no ordinary one at that!

Eel, Pie and Mash in Felixstowe Did you know that eel, pie and mash shops are bits of living history and very much a London invention.

The famous meal served is pie, mash and liquor eaten in surroundings associated with Victorians’ eating establishments. Traditionally, the shops have white tile walls with mirrors, and marble floors, tables and worktops, all of which are easy to clean. They give the shops - hardly ever called restaurants - a late Victorian appearance. And this is exactly what Sally Jane has done in her traditional Pie Shop on Beach Station Road!

Born and raised in Trimley, Sally has a strong background in catering; her grandfather was a master baker in the area and Sally herself worked in the Ferry Café in Old Felixstowe. At that time, her dream was always to start her own establishment.

With an interest in the history of the industry paired with her partner’s experience in running Pie ‘n’ Mash shops in London and the outer suburbs, Sally’s Pie Shop soon opened its doors and has quickly become known in Felixstowe and afar for the best venue for the famous meal!

And we’re not talking just steaming hot delicious pies served with creamy mash and stewed eels bought fresh from Billingsgate, but also tasty classics like sausage baguettes, bacon rolls and seriously scrummy sticky toffee and spotted dick puddings.

And get this… not only does she offer a local delivery service but she also runs a wedding breakfast menu! So cool!

Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals.

At the time of writing Felixstowe has enjoyed yet another of those ‘special’ annual events with a gloriously sunny Art on the Prom. We’re not sure what the organisers manage to do - but nine times out of ten it’s a lovely sunny day when the event takes place. As usual the prom was packed as residents and visitors alike enjoyed the art, handicrafts and all manner of other items made by local professional and amateur people. We’re so lucky to live in a town where dedicated volunteers allow events like this to happen.

Also during September, BASIC were chosen as the supported charity of the year by local archery group Oakwood Bowmen, who shoot at Rendlesham. They held their charity shoot on September 9th. They raised a total of £400 (see photo). We’d like to publically thank Mel Horne and the team for their amazing support!

Another event to look forward to in October is a Halloween quiz night being held at the Labour Club on (of course) October 31st. Fancy dress is optional, but greatly encouraged and there shall be prizes for the best. Tickets are £5 per person for teams up to 6 and can be purchased from Lucy Ainsley on 0744 6991247. Proceeds are split between Lucy’s ‘Brew for Blake’ and BASIC.

As you can see we have a lot of local support and it’s fantastic to see people choosing to support us in their charity events. With the money we receive we have been able to assist many local residents, most recently with the provision of school uniforms for those in exceptional circumstances.

In addition, we have provided temporary accommodation for a local homeless couple and we continue to provide free breakfasts for the pupils at Langer Academy and Causton Junior School.

As we’re on the verge of the winter months we’re sure requests for food parcels will increase and we’re so grateful to all who support us with donations. Food bank provision may have gone off the news radar recently but we can assure you there are still lots of local people who need support.

One of our new projects is to ‘join the dots’ between the caring and support groups in Felixstowe as we have so many people who can help in almost every situation.

We’ve put together a directory so if you need to be referred to a local group who can help with your particular need, call us on 01394 279400 and we’ll pass on any information we can.

Together we can continue to make Felixstowe, Walton and the Trimley’s the areas known as places of real community.

Here’s news from the Felixstowe Library and their summer reading challenge...

Reading Challenge 2015 for Children The Summer Reading Challenge 2015 was held again this summer at Felixstowe Library. The theme this year was Record Breakers in conjunction with the Guinness Book of Records.

The preparations for The Challenge begin with visits to local schools, the recruitment of volunteers and the setting up of the children’s library.

We have been really fortunate in having a strong, enthusiastic team of twnety-one volunteers ranging in age from fourteen to retirement. These loyal folk gave 292 hours of their time to sign children up for the challenge and then listen to them talk about each of the six books that each child reads to complete the challenge.

We are so pleased to announce that over two hundred children completed the challenge and received their awards and wrist bands, prior to attending the Awards Ceremony.

At the ceremony each child was awarded a personalized Certificate and a medal. Luke, age twelve, Shannon, age nine, Lewis age seven and Kyle age five paid a visit each week along with their mother to read each of their books and here is what they have to say about the challenge.

Luke said, “It was quite ok. I liked the different books.”

Shannon said, “I found it fun and challenging. I liked ‘Room on a Broom.’”

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

Policeman’s Boiled Fruit Cake Named by the lovely Diane Meadows (who you can read about on the following page), as it was a cake she made for a competition at Martlesham Police Headquarters. This was one of her favourite recipes and features on the Stennetts Community Café menu.

This is a super simple cake that anyone can make!

Infact with the McMillan Coffee Morning having just passed, some of you novices may be inspired to put your hand to baking. This is the perfect beginners choice...

Ingredients:

12oz or 350g mixed fruit 4 oz or 100g sugar 4 oz or 100g Butter/Margarine ¼ pt water 1 egg 8oz or 225g self raising flour 1 teaspoon mixed spice

Allow to cool.

Add egg, spice and flour.

Turn into a 6 or 7 inch greased tin.

Bake for 1 ½ hours at 150-160 degrees.

Let the cake sit in the tin for about 10 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack.

Either store in an airtight box, tin or wrap well in cling film.

Alternatively, if you just want to dive in - slice and serve with a splendid cup of tea!

Enjoy!

Method

Put fruit, sugar, butter/margarine and water in a pan.

Simmer slowly for 20 minutes or until puffed up.

Local lady, Lisa Williams set up her social enterprise with the idea to support and welcome those with disabilities into a working environment.

Local Social Enterprise opens

Stennetts Community Pop-Up Café On the July 9th 2015 Lisa from Roseberry Cottage Enterprise Ltd, opened the doors to The Stennetts Community Pop-Up Café. Set in the heart of Trimley St Mary, at the Pavilion of The Trimley Red Devils Football Club, on Stennetts Park. The café is not just any normal pop-up café – it sets the bar for having community at its heart. With free parking and a playground for children this is a perfect place to relax and at the same time, support those with learning difficulties and special needs. We met the lovely Lisa, who tells us more…

Our purpose is to support people to live a fulfilling and independent life. We envisioned creating a pop-up café and lunch club, which serves good food and provides work-based training and opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and people disadvantaged within the workplace, within their local community.

Graham told us, “They are a fantastic additional to the club and we’re delighted to have Lisa and her team with us.”

The model for this cafe works so well - people that come to work with me become very independent and interact and participate with the community. It’s all about presence in the community and to live an ordinary life. It helps people to achieve more respect and have a valued social role.

We teach basic cooking skills like baking The lovely Andrew.. cakes, making Sheppard’s Pie etc. On Tuesdays we help those who have a placement with us to cook the dishes and on Wednesdays At the end of the day, the people and Thursdays we open our doors to the public. We make we work with just want to work everything from light lunches to lovely hot meals and like anyone else. We hone in on and ever smiling, Mot. beautiful cakes. My mum, Diane Meadows, was a big inspiration to me, sadly she recently passed away. She used to run up a local charity called the Felixstowe Friendly Visiting Service. They’d go out once a month from April – December to do something nice, like afternoon tea or nice walks. For the elderly who otherwise are housebound, really rely on such services.

Mum was always very caring and service oriented.

Felixstowe Town and Around News As August bows out on a wave of rain and wind (can you ever remember such awful summer weather) welcome to September and the hope for an improvement and a return of the sun!

August has been relatively quiet but now it’s back to business as usual.

However, August produced some memorable moments and “openings” spring to mind: The refurbished Spa Gardens opened at last and how splendid they look. The weather was atrocious for the official opening with rain and strong winds. The Town Hall gardens will not be completed until the shelter is constructed. The new play equipment in Martello Park has also been opened and when I went down to the park it was teeming with families enjoying everything on offer including the kiosks on Manor Terrace. My mum had a shop on the corner of Manor Terrace for some thirty years and when I mentioned this to Kim from the South Kiosk she told me that many people had spoken to her about my mum and in her words said, “she was a legend.” Well, Kim is hosting a tea and cakes afternoon on the 19th September in memory of my mum, Betty Davey. A lovely gesture and I hope lots of people who remember her, attend.

The Felixstowe Volunteer Coast patrol crew hosted two events on the Triangle, imparting information about their service and allowing the general public to show their support by donating money to help this extremely important and valuable service to continue. The children in attendance loved boarding the Volunteer boat.

I attended the exhibition of memorabilia collated by Jean MacPherson and Bev Boyce of the history of the building in Garrison Lane that has been home in the past to the Felixstowe Grammar School, Deben High School and now Felixstowe International College. About 130 people registered to attend the event and it was wonderful to see people reliving their youth through the photographs and other memorabilia on show – that included me! The building is 85 years old this year and everyone was delighted that its future as an educational establishment is continuing.

Colneis Flower Club Do you ever read my articles about our club and think ‘I would like to go along but don’t want to go on my own’. If you do, please don’t worry about it. You will be given a warm Colneis welcome and introduced to other members whether you are on your own or with friends. We also don’t discriminate about whether you are young or older; whether you come from near or far. Everyone is welcome to come along to one of our meetings to have some fun, make new friends and enjoy watching a qualified National Association of Flower Arrangements demonstrator showing us how to make the best of a bunch of flowers. At the end of the evening tea, coffee and biscuits are available and, if you have bought a winning raffle ticket, you will go home with one of the arrangements made during the evening.

Felixstowe Waves Swimming Club Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for children due to its non-impact nature and low risk of injury.

Chernobyl Children Vast areas of Belarus and the northern Ukraine became heavily contaminated with radioactivity after the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster. On Wednesday 22nd July the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line and the Lions Club of Felixstowe organised a visit to Felixstowe for 19 Chernobyl children with their interpreters and adult helpers. Every year the CCLL organises a four week visit to England for a different group of children to give them respite from having to live in the contaminated environment; which affects every part of Belarusian life. Eating nourishing food and breathing clean air significantly boosts their damaged immune systems and improves their subsequent quality of life.

The children started with a visit to Kirton Light Railway at Fred Last’s house for rides on the miniature train.

The children then had fish and chips at The Hut on the seafront which was kindly donated by The Bounty Fish and Chip Shop, Walton. Whilst at The Hut the children were visited by the Mayor, Cllr Doreen Savage and Lions President John Gooch.

Orwell Decorative and Fine Arts Society Our next meeting and lecture, on October 7th, will feature Stephen Taylor who will talk on ‘Walter Richard Sickert: a biography in painting: a very public and very private painter.’ Stephen Taylor is a professional painter specialising in landscapes. He exhibits extensively and lectures in colleges and universities.

The society began the new season, on Sept 7th, with a topical theme. In this the 200th anniversary year of the Battle of Waterloo, Peter Warwick gave a fascinating talk entitled ‘The Art of Waterloo’. This was a history lesson illustrated by wonderful art. Peter led us through the protagonists and the path of events concluding with the great battle itself. A truly riveting talk and a great start to our season!

We welcome new members. The lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by national and international lecturers. Lioness News Update The number 13 may be unlucky for some, but not for Felixstowe Lionesses, as our 13th member was inducted

by President Val at our recent meeting at the Brook Hotel.

Sponsored by last year’s President, Jill, Sue Wharton was presented with her own badge from when she was a Lioness some years ago. Also joining us at this meeting was Felixstowe Lions President John Gooch, together with Peggy Rose, who will become our 14th member at our meeting in October.

The weather kindly stayed dry for our August social gettogether, which was afternoon tea courtesy of Lynn and her lovely garden. Sandwiches, cakes, scones, tea and gossip were enjoyed by all.

Our next fundraising efforts are the Quiz Night on October 2nd at Broadway House, followed by a Clairvoyant Evening at Trimley Sports and Social Club on October 28th.

FADOS On Friday 28th August we kicked off the Bank Holiday weekend with an entertainment, ploughman’s supper and a quiz. We had a lovely audience and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Then on Mon Sept 3rd we got together for the first read through of our next major production. This is Murdered to Death by Peter Gordon, a completely wacky spoof on the Agatha Christie school of Theatre. This will be performed on November 19th, 20th and 21st at FADOS House. We find mounting productions at our own venue much more fun, but anyone who is interested in buying tickets is welcome to ring any time in advance on 01394 671 306. This is recommended as the seating is limited so put it in your diary.

Felixstowe Recorded Music Society Is there something about autumn in particular that makes us look back? The contemplation of another year’s passing, perhaps? The Gainsborough Club The Craft Group had a very enjoyable break at the Cameo Hotel in Copdock. Many people have augmented their stock of handmade Christmas Cards as well as following up other projects.

The Drama Group are in full rehearsal mode for the special meeting on Tuesday 6th October when we have our Harvest Supper and entertainment, followed in November by a talk by Ann Long on A day in the Life of a Magistrate, plus a Christmas Sales Table and then in December we have our Christmas Lunch.

Gerry Bremner aka ‘Il Tenore’

Felixstowe based Gerry Bremner (aka llTenore) has a rapidly growing reputation as one of the UK’s fastest emerging classical crossover artists. He has appeared in numerous concerts and shows as the principle tenor specialising in operetta and musical theatre and he has also appeared in several international opera festivals at the Buxton Opera House in Derbyshire.

He has played the tenor lead in The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeomen of The Guard, Iolanthe, Princess Ida, The Sorcerer and The Gondoliers.

A previous winner of the first ‘Felixstowe’s Got Talent’ competition, Gerry has appeared at The Regent Theatre in Ipswich in ‘A Star For A Night’ and at The Spa Pavillion with BBC Radio Suffolk.

Gerry has also performed on the Fred Olsen flag ship The Balmoral, in Rhodes, Greece at The Atlantic Imperial Resort and also at the O2 Arena in London. He has recently returned from Australia and is now being featured on Australian radio as a UK classical crossover vocalist. Gerry also appears with the acclaimed classical vocal quartet Quattro Amici as the tenor lead.

He is working with top London vocal coach Prof. Ross Campbell of The Royal Academy of Music and is also working on his first album with Phil Harding and Julian Wiggins.

Phil is an internationally recognised producer and recording engineer based in Bury St Edmunds who helped create the

famous Stock, Aitken and Waterman label and is widely regarded as being responsible for the creation of their famous style and sound. Phil has worked with acts such as The Four Tops, Kyle Minogue, West Life and The Pet Shop Boys.

Julian is an international producer and composer who has recorded the LSO at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

Gerry says, “I used to work with Phil at the legendary Marquee Studios in London where we were both trainee sound engineers. I lost contact with him over the years and had no idea he was living in Suffolk until I read a magazine article about his career. We met up and I am delighted that he is now part of my production team working alongside Julian who is a very respected and talented composer and producer.”

Gerry has also recently achieved success in his first attempt at entering the UK Song writing contest. In collaboration with local songwriter Adrian Ratcliffe of Woodbridge he co-wrote a song called ‘Debut of Intrigue’ which has reached the semi-finals of the competition. It will now be entered into the next stage of the judging competition. It will be included on his debut album.

Spearheading Local Support for Refugee Crisis Gemma Goode and partner, Paul are just an ordinary couple from Felixstowe, but what they’re doing recently is completely extraordinary. Many of you may have wondered how you can help the refugees from Syria, well Gemma and Paul may have just answered this for you. Here is Gemma to tell us how…

With a grassroots organization, CalAid we’re co-ordinating a collection point at The BASIC Life Charity (in their Felixstowe and Walton shops) and in Dexter’s Bar at the Co-op. Here, local folk can donate any unwanted items of clothing and other things that will be of great use to the refugees. On 20th-21st September and fortnightly from then on, we will run the donated items to the CalAid London depot. We are also able to do twice weekly pick ups around Felixstowe and people can contact me on Facebook or via the details below.

We will also be collecting money at various locations throughout town. The money raised will be used to buy the more essential items and our aim is to buy these from local charity shops, which in turn will support more local causes.

We also have a list of items we require but any other items donated such as children’s toys and clothes and women’s clothes will be taken to local charities supporting women and children.

A lot of people have also found it nice to write a note of support, which will be distributed along with the donations and documented so people can really see their donation has made a difference.

We’re desperately seeking extra storage space so if anyone has a garage / workshop / container we could use we urge them to get in touch. Also, if any local businesses / schools / workplaces would be willing to have a collection bucket we would be really keen to hear from them.

So far, I have also been overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness shown by others. Our mission is not a question of who should / shouldn’t be allowed in. It is neither political nor religious; it is not for greed or gain. It is simply people helping people, some may find asylum in our country and some may not. Either way, as human beings we all have a right to food, shelter and safety and when we start to deny people the very basics of a drink of water or a pair of socks, it is a dark day for humanity.

Using a devastating situation for a higher purpose is something we’ve always found inspiring. Eileen is no exception. We met Eileen to find out about an event she’s organising and why…

Eileen Hicks - Fighting Against Dementia

Fifty-six years ago Eileen married the boy next door, Philip Hicks. They have four children together and have lived in Felixstowe for thirty years. Eileen always had her heart set on this town and since moving here she got involved in amateur dramatics and costume making. Here she is to tell you how she’s used her costume making skills to support the fight against dementia...

Once we moved from Essex to Felixstowe I thought of costume making. I started with £6 and a pair of curtains.

It’s amazing what you can do with a beautiful set of Laura Ashley curtains from a charity shop! One year, I made the resolution that I’d make a costume a day. In those days charity shops were just booming so I bought all my materials from there. I made so many costumes that soon our home transformed into a giant dressing room and was filled with ladies trying on costumes in every corner. So my husband and I bought a shop on Gainsborough Road.

Later we moved to what is now known as Chuckles where I continued till I was 65.

In 2013, Philip, my husband, was diagnosed with the beginning stages of dementia. Through the research of the Alzheimer’s Society, it’s almost possible that someone with dementia can lead a half normal life. For a while I’ve wanted to do something that supports the charity by organising a fundraising event, however I don’t have a computer and if I did it would blow up in my hands as I’m no good at using them. But I recently met the lovely Julie Locke, a fellow drama fanatic and singer. She heard about my idea of the event and together we’re making it a reality.

On 16th October at the Orwell Hotel, we will host a fantastic catwalk featuring original vintage costumes from the 30’s – 60’s, with live music featuring six local singers, including Julie, Bill Stoddart providing keyboards (resident pianist from Orwell Hotel) and Neil Saint on guitar.

The whole family is getting involved with the modeling as well as ladies from the FADOS drama group. Even Philip’s carer will be on the catwalk as a sailor. We all recently had a get together to talk about the songs we could sing and trying on the outfits, it was so much fun and I know we’ll have a fantastic event.

Barclays have promised to match any funds we raise from ticket sales and the raffle, which will go to the research department of the Alzheimer’s Society.

We’d like to thank Neil Saint who has printed all our tickets and provided the PA system, and Pierrots for printing our leaflets. Sarah, the latest owner of Chuckles has been a real help in providing costumes for the 1960’s era. The Coop Juniors Theatre Company has provided the catwalk and FADOS have provided most of the vintage costumes.

The Co-operative Society

When I first moved to England, I was quite enchanted with the idea of the Co-operative Society; not just being a customer, but becoming a ‘member’ and getting a ‘divvy’! Of course, the benefit of the co-op goes deeper than just offering a kick back to its customers or being the shop on the corner to pick up your milk on a Sunday afternoon.

I’ve noticed that the East of England Co-op appears to be forerunners in many of the value-based food issues that have become mainstream over the last few years. We’re now able to buy specialist health food and allergen-free products which until recently we were only able to buy the range available in health food shops. At the forefront of the ‘food miles’ issue, the Coop’s commitment to local Foodbanks food producers has supported the local economy and introduced us to many artisan foods that you would have to go hunting around the county to pick up. I have local cold-pressed rapeseed oil, which has a rich, neutral taste that enriches salads. Buying asparagus grown ‘just down the road certainly makes me feel more far more self-righteous than buying it shipped from Peru!

Darren Wash, the manager of the Solar store in Felixstowe town centre, has a particular commitment to the local community, and has a personal interest in nutrition and ensuring that young people have access to good food. I’m aware that Solar have supported local charities and enterprises in surprising and very Collection practical ways.

As a customer I’m quite impressed with how the town centre store is able to change its interior to expand the services offered under their roof. I have to admit to being completely reeled in by the £5 meal deals this summer. Sharon-Denise Taylor

With her own micro studio in Felixstowe, Sharon has been spinning since 2003 but creativity started in her childhood when she learned to knit at the age of seven years.

Sharon has always been making and creating - the creative energy helps to Keep Calm and Carry On! Sharon says that spinning has saved her in so many ways as a tool to combat stress and anxiety and to express myself and her favourite motto is: ‘Let the Yarn tell the Story!”

How long have you lived in Felixstowe and what’s your favourite thing about it?

Twelve years. I love the whole town but the prom and sea is what I love the best!!

What got you into weaving and yarns?

I was a spinner first and weaving was a natural progression to working with unique handspun yarns and being free to create any yarns of any colour and texture of my choice!

What inspires your work?

Colour!!! And the changing seasons!

Tell us about your technique…

I use fleece from local farmers smallholders and specialise in spinning Wensleydale fleece into luxury yarns, using special spinning techniques. All my fleeces are straight off the sheep’s back which I then wash clean, dye and then finally spin.

I sell dyed tops and batts (types of fibre) to other spinners and specialise in dyeing luxury mill spun yarns. I’m also a saori weaver (a Japanese style of weaving). I create my hand spun yarns into luxury shawls and felting fleece into art clothing, from felted boas, to one of a kind art wear!

Have you got any upcoming exhibitions we can attend?

I will be holding an open day at my studio at end of November but I exhibit and sell at all the big wool shows around the UK. Any projects your especially proud of?

Yes my turquoise dye felted Wensleydale boa which is for sale on my website.

Any claims to fame?

I’ve met the queen!!!! When I was seven years old! But I’m about to have my artwork published in the USA with an organisation called Craftsy.
