Welcome to the March edition of The Felixstowe Magazine Isn’t it crazy how 2015 is ticking by at a furious rate? In fact, with our very first birthday coming up next month, the past year has zipped by like a train on white hot rails!

Not only do we have the chance to really celebrate our marvelous mums on Sunday 15th March, but there a great many more celebrations to be had...Peanut Butter Lovers Day, National Pig Day (both on 1st March), Girl Scout Day (12th March), Ear Muff Day (13th March) and of course, St Patrick’s Day (17th March).

Now, we’re not usually a political or serious bunch at all, but we thought we’d host a meeting with our local political party members, where you get the opportunity to do a bit of pre-election questioning. This hustings (official lingo for this type of get together) is open to all. You are all invited and we’ll make sure you’re kept warm with teas and coffees during the event. Cancer Care & Information Following from Eileen’s incredible story of her fight with cancer in the October 2014 issue, we received this lovely email from Gina Cooper who tells us a bit more about the cancer support centre, founded by Dr, John Le Vay...

John Le Vay Cancer Information Centre I cannot tell you how moved I was to read Eileen’s story in The Felixstowe Magazine and especially about her appreciation of the John Le Vay Cancer Information Centre at Ipswich Hospital.

The centre was the brainchild of Dr. John Le Vay, an oncologist at the Hospital following a conversation that he had with one of his patients, Ipswich Town footballer Jason Cundy who had been diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Jason had asked if there was a central point from which he could obtain all the information he needed about his disease and its treatment. From this conversation John came up with the idea of building a purpose-built Centre to provide not only information from leaflets, specialists and access to the Internet, but also encompassing three private interview rooms for specialists and doctors to talk to their patients about their diagnoses, and talk to them about their treatment, one of these rooms would also include facilities for complementary therapy.

John and Radiotherapy Manager Barbara Hercliffe contacted me in 1997 and asked for my help in setting up a charity to raise funds not only for a Centre, but also to provide a source of funding within the county for cancer patients and cancer projects in Suffolk. Cancer Campaign in Suffolk was launched in 1998 and fundraising

The Duke of Kent, John Le Vay and Jonathan Ripman who is chairman of the charity

for the Centre began. The project was finished in 2004 and opened by HRH Duke of Kent. It has now helped thousands of cancer patients. The Complementary Therapy team are very busy, sometimes using 2 of the private rooms and you can usually find one or two taking advantage of the comfortable seats and refreshments there.

I ran the office from my home in Old Felixstowe for many years before we moved to an office in Hamilton Road above the café formally known as Froffee Coffee. I was helped in the office by many volunteers from Felixstowe all of whom played a part in helping to maintain the services offered by the Centre. Lesley, also from Felixstowe, joined us officially in 2007 as fundraising assistant.

Dr John Le Vay sadly passed away shortly after the Centre was opened and the facility was renamed as a memorial to him. I retired in 2008 but was able to see for myself how invaluable the service offered by the Centre is when I had my own battle against the disease last year!!

A Little History about Lent

Hi, I’m Caroline the new Vicar at St Mary’s Walton and St Martin’s & St Mary’s Trimley and I would like to share with you something about Lent.

On the 17th February I am sure many of you made pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. For many Christians this marks the beginning of Lent, a pivotal point in the history of the Church.

Traditionally we mark Lent by giving up something, chocolate or alcohol are quite common, but what if it could be more than that? What if Lent was the beginning of a lifetime of big heartedness?

Can you imagine if everyone in Felixstowe did a small act of generosity each day during lent and what a difference it would make to our community.

So what do I mean? What about sending a text to a friend saying how much you value their friendship and how you appreciate them being in your life.

are brilliant. So why not smile and say hello as you walk down the road and await the response.

Have a car-free day, think of all those people you will meet.

Spend some time listening to someone…

The list is endless.

War Recollections

The Asiago Plateau, WWI

Have you seen the film ‘Testament of Youth’? Or perhaps you have read the book? The story fills me with some emotion because my uncle, with whom I watched the battles raging in Cassino crouched behind a low wall, as mentioned in my previous article, fought in the same Battle of The Piave in WW1 to which Captain Edward Brittain was sent from France.

When my uncle died some thirty years ago, my auntie was asked by the Italian Veteran Association if they could bedeck his coffin with the Italian flag. She thought it strange, but reasoned that perhaps it was normal for members of the association. Some days later,when they were sorting through his personal belongings, they discovered the reason why. My uncle had been awarded The Gold Medal for Military Valour, the highest Italian military medal. Yet, he never, ever mentioned a word about it to his family, friends, nor me.

So when I think of him, I also think of the brave young British lads who fought in the same battle, and who are very seldom mentioned. Our knowledge and ideas of WW1, seems limited to the terrible trench warfare in the muddy fields of the Western Front against the Germans. British forces also fought in the Southern Front against the Central Powers in battles that may not seem big compared with those in France, but which were perhaps the most decisive battles of WW1 because seven days after the defeat of the

Captain Edward Brittain’s grave Austrian-Hungarian army, Germany surrendered.

The film makes no reference to the Asiago Plateau, other than the death of Captain Brittain, but briefly, two British Divisions with one in reserve were positioned on the plateau, in the foothills of the Italian Alps. The Austrian – Hungarians launched a major offensive in June 1918 with the intention of surrounding the allied forces on the Piave and finally defeating them. One of their major thrusts was to be via the Asiago Plateau.

The British forces on the plateau were inexperienced in that kind of warfare. Furthermore, 1500 were in hospital suffering from altitude sickness and other illnesses. They were greatly outnumbered by the attacking enemy, well experienced in mountain warfare. Inevitably, the line was breached after 24 hours of fierce fighting. All seemed lost when suddenly, as written in the diary of Fusilier Norman Gladden, a Captain Stirling appeared on the parados and called for volunteers (did not order them) to counter-attack.

Electrified by his example, the men clambered up after him, and after another 24 hours of hand-to-hand fighting, regained lost ground and completely thwarted the Austrian offensive on the plateau. A fantastic, glorious feat against experienced Alpine troops. Cooks, orderlies, clerks and all other non combatants also took up arms and joined in the fight, for which it is also called ‘The Battle of the Cooks’ and also known as ‘The Battle in the Clouds.’ Sadly Captain Stirling was killed in late October when the Allies launched their final offensive against the Austrian-Hungarians.

A medal was struck to be issued to British officers. The accompanying letter read: ‘Herewith silver medal presented

by Gen. Montuori, commanding 6th Army, to British Officers in commemoration of the defeat of the Austrian attack on the Asiago Plateau June 1918.” The inscription on the medal read ‘In faith brothers and in Victory.’ I can picture my uncle, whose silence spoke volumes, heartily approving that gesture towards the British band of brothers, many of whom lie there, in silence.

Mother’s Day Mango Crunch Cookies syrup and mango. Whizz to blend in and chop the mango a little more finely. Add the flour and briefly blitz to form a soft dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and shape into a ball. Chill for 20 mins.

Ingredients

140g butter, at room temperature 50g golden caster sugar 1 egg yolk 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp maple syrup 100g dried mango, roughly chopped 175g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

Using a rolling pin, roll the cookie dough to the thickness of a £1 coin on a lightly floured surface, then cut out biscuit shapes with a 10cm cutter for large, or a 5cm cutter for smaller cookies.

Transfer to a baking tray lined with baking parchment, and cook for 12-15 mins or until lightly golden and firm. Remove and leave to cool on a wire rack.

Method

Heat the oven to 180C/ 160C fan/ gas 4. Place the butter and sugar in a food blender and blitz until smooth and creamy. Add the egg yolk, vanilla, maple

If decorating, mix the icing sugar with the mango juice to make a runny icing. Drizzle or spoon the icing over the biscuits, then add the sprinkles if using, and leave to set.

Will keep in a biscuit tin for up to 1 week.

Now, I would never dispute the importance of good dental hygiene. My mouth is no stranger to stringent flossing, being prodded with interdental brushes (and the big blue ones too – although that does feel like ramming a feather duster between my teeth – not that I’ve tried that you understand) and a 30 second gargle with Jeyes Fluid each night.

Well not Jeyes Fluid exactly but the stuff the dentist insists on me using resembles it pretty closely!

But please, what are hygienists all about?

It used to be the dentist that everyone was nervous about visiting. These days however my doctor-of-the-pearlywhites enters my cake hole with finesse and decorum and tickles the old fangs without me feeling a thing. Job done, no tears no tantrums. And sadly no lollipop either these days, the receptionists keeps insisting I’m too old. What?!

I’m only 44 for Pete’s sake...although I do manage to wangle a ‘Brave Little Soldier’ sticker just to prove the point to my colleagues upon my return. Oh yes, respect!

But the idea of visiting Cruella De Vil, I beg your pardon, I mean my hygienist fills me with genuine dread.

It takes everything I have not to break out in a cold sweat (or indeed break wind) when my name is called by her dental nurse.

I peel myself from the waiting room chair – which is slightly damp by then – and reluctantly lumber up the stairs to her lair, sorry, I mean her treatment room.

I enter, and there she is, breathing like Darth Vadar (or it may just be her asthma) but just a little scarier to look at.

“Sit” she bellows!

I do. She cranks my chair down to the horizontal position.

She readjusts her face mask (which I’ve convinced myself at this point is made from the flesh of baby chinchillas) and she goes in, lightsaber in hand.

Then she asks the question that hygienist’s patients always dread, “Have you flossed?”

“Yes” I reply, “Err no, well yes, yes, well I did…yesterday, this morning…I mean.”

“You haven’t, have you?” she snorts. “No” says I. Aaagh, definitely no lollipop now.

A flossing lesson and 20 minutes later, I’m scraped, polished and feeling amazing.

What is the problem? I just don’t understand why you’re so afraid of the hygienist. You big baby you!

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals.

In Felixstowe March is always the month when we begin to prepare for the start of spring and the new season ahead.

While the beach huts are being revamped and the amusements checked out, BASIC are also getting ready.

We have changed our stock and now have a vast range of clothes, shoes and other items more suitable to this time of year and, as usual, we think we have the cheapest items in town by a long way. So why not pop into one of our shops and get a REAL bargain!

One of our strengths is that we are not ‘money-driven’ and we don’t have a ‘head office’ miles away – we are Felixstowe people and we never forget that the items we sell have been donated to us. So it is very possible to get really good items for a lot less than normal.

As local people we can also identify the needs in the communities of Felixstowe, Walton and the Trimley villages and can act quickly to assist when needs arise.

At the same time we are supportive of all the other charities in the town and often donate raffle prizes and sometimes

excess stock to them. We’re always happy to advertise their events and we know that the town has such a fantastic group of caring people working to make life better.

Last month we got together with Mandeep, founder of the Felixstowe Magazine and we all decided to hold a joint charity event.

Mandeep is supporting a school in India via a Just Giving page (www.justgiving.com/EducationisFreedom) and we are also trying to raise more funds, so we have arranged a charity meal at the excellent Bombay Nite restaurant in Walton for Monday 30th March at 6.00pm.

Tickets are £25 a head and will include a full meal, games and a raffle. It’s bound to be a really fun evening so please purchase your tickets now and be sure to bring the family!

Hullo readers! I am absolutely chuffed to bits to be able to invite you all to this lovely dinner that Graham at BASIC Life Charity and I are organising.

Many of you who read Graham’s regular update in our magazine see the amazing things he and his staff are able to do with the contribution of the generous people of Felixstowe. Seeing the united efforts of such people got me thinking about a new free school in the village of Saidpur, in India where part of my family are from. With a population of 2000 and where dirt roads wind around fields as far as the eye can see, the closest free school is miles away. And so, the Tej Rasila International School is a beacon of hope and a foothold for all the children of the area.

Where education and learning are not available to all due to proverty, this school has been built to accommodate a large number of children from the age of 5 -18, with the purpose to provide free education to any child who wishes to study.

Dean’s at it Again

At The Felixstowe Magazine office Dean smashed yet another world record for the most beer mats flipped one at a time in 30 seconds. The record was 30 held by another record breaker but Dean managed 35, well done to our Dean.

Record Breaker’s Cup Competition

Dean is representing Great Britain at this summer’s World Record Cup, against USA and India. On a point system for beating records. India are the favourite’s to lift the cup but Dean said “We have a strong team which includes Paddy Doyle from Birmingham who can win us the cup as long as he is on form. I can also do some damage with my own beer mat flipping.”

Dean recently smashed 3 Beer Mat Flipping world records on television and he now holds 40 world records. He celebrated 30 year’s of record breaking last year when he did a special record achievement billed as his best record ever. Dean caught a single pile of 215 beer mats which were balanced on his elbow and caught in the Back Of His Hand using the same arm. This was covered by The Felixstowe Magazine and can be seen on their facebook page.

Dean who appeared on the famous, Record Breakers TV Show many times in the 1980’s and 90’s is still in contact with Co Presenter Cheryl Baker (Bucks Fizz Singer) and Cheryl is still supporting Dean and encouraging him with his latest records. “It is amazing how many celebrities I am still in contact with after all these years,” said Dean.

The Little Fabric Shop

A couple of years ago a friend at work told me about a new fabric shop opening in Felixstowe. It has taken me this long to get there, but I am glad I did.

We got a warm welcome and a quick tour of the shop starting with the bargain bin at the door! There is a good selection of polycotton on one wall and quilting cotton on the other. I love quilting fabric and if I were to admit to a vice this would be it, so to see all the colours and patterns lined up was a joy to behold. The centre of the shop is filled with a lovely collection of fat quarter quilting fabric on a table and I could not resist buying some for my daughter.

You will also find a good selection of sewing equipment and a lovely little dog named Queenie stationed behind the counter keeping her favourite person company. We had a chat to the owner who told us that she started two and a half years ago starting with her own sewn goods and a fabric stockpile and has been building up the business

slowly ever since. A testament to independent business – a little bit of resources and a lot of passion and patience! Did I mention the cute babushka and owl buttons?

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

I’m really enjoying my time in the conveyancing department at our Ipswich office and I’m starting to get to grips with the wide range of matters that the team deals with on a daily basis.

A lot of what we do is, of course, helping our clients to buy or sell houses but no two homes are the same and you never know what surprises each may hold in store.

Whilst the vast majority of the transactions that we assist with progress without any problems, thorough searches are essential; even the most innocuous-looking house could turn out to have been constructed on potentially contaminated land, for example, which may result in the new owner having to pay out for remedying a problem that was nothing to do with them in the first place. Then there’s the risk of flooding, subsidence, action by local authorities with regards to planning permissions or building consents… we’ve seen them all. It’s this variety in the properties that we deal with that makes conveyancing such an interesting department to be working in.

I’ve also been involved in lots of other matters where clients need assistance in their current properties. Boundary

disputes, be it high hedges blocking out the light, fences deviating off the boundary line or establishing who has to maintain watercourses, can be stressful for all concerned and I’ve seen how important it is to resolve issues before neighbourly relationships break down. I have also seen how important it is to ensure that when couples purchase a house together the declaration of ownership protects everyone’s interests, including say parental contributions in the unfortunate event of separation.

Every day brings something new here in the conveyancing department, and I still have lots to learn!

Inner Wheel

International Inner Wheel day was celebrated at our first meeting of 2015.The occasion was marked by a collection of groceries which we presented to the local Salvation Army for their food bank.

Hustings on 21st April With Election Day coming up in May, we're hearing a lot of nonsense as well as a lot of common sense from various political folks...

A very successful and enjoyable fundraising evening was held at Broadway House on Jan 23rd.This was arranged by our overseas organiser Jackie who was raising funds for “School in a Box.” The talk was about the Thomas Coram Institute. The foundling hospital was established in 18th century to look after abandoned and destitute babies. It had the support from some well known people of the time particularly William Hogarth and Frederick Handel.

An amazing £385 was raised, so well done Jackie and everyone else who helped to make the evening a success.
