Velvet Yarn 100g x 4 (4-5-5) balls
NEEDLES AND EXTRAS
• 1 pair 5mm knitting needles, or size that gives correct tension.
• A yarn needle.
TENSION
13 sts and 19 rows to 10 cm over stocking st, using 5mm needles.
BACK
Using 5mm needles, cast on 39 (43-45-49) sts loosely.
Knit 5 rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Work in purl fabric (1 row P, 1 row K) until work measures 26 (29-32-34) cm from beg, ending with a knit row.
Shape Armholes – 1st row - Cast off 2 (3-3-3) sts, purl to end.
2nd row – Cast off 2 (3-3-3) sts, knit to end = 35 (37-39-43) sts. ** 3rd row – P2tog, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog. 4th row – Knit.
5th row – As 3rd row = 31 (33-35-39) sts.
Cont without shaping until armholes measure 14 (15-16-18) cm, working last row on WS.
Shape Shoulders – Cast off 5 (5-5-6) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 4 (4-5-5) sts at beg of foll 2 rows. Cast off rem 13 (15-15-17) sts loosely.
FRONT
Work as for Back to **.
Divide For Front Opening – Next row – P2tog, P8 (9-10-12), K3 (front band), turn.
Cont on these 16 (17-18-20) sts.
Next row – K3 (front band), knit to end. Next row – P2tog, purl to last 3 sts, K3 = 15 (16-17-19) sts. Keeping garter st edging correct at front edge, cont without shaping until armhole measures 9 (9-10-12) cm, working last row on WS.
Work 1 row.
Shape Neck – Next row (WS) – Cast off 3 (3-3-4) sts, knit to end. Dec one st at neck edge in every row until 9 (9-10-11) sts rem. Cont without shaping until armhole measures same as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, working last row on WS.
Shape Shoulder – Cast off 5 (5-5-6) sts at beg of next row.
Work 1 row. Cast off rem 4 (4-5-5) sts. With RS facing, join yarn to rem sts, K2tog, K2, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog.
Next row – Knit to last 3 sts, K3 (front band).
Next row – K3, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog = 15 (16-17-19) sts. Keeping garter st edging correct at front edge, cont without shaping until armhole measures 9 (9-10-12) cm, working last row on WS.
Shape Neck – Next row (RS) – Cast off 3 (3-3-4) sts, purl to end.
Dec one st at neck edge in every row until 9 (9-10-11) sts rem.
Cont without shaping until armhole measures same as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, working last row on WS.
Work 1 row.
Shape Shoulder – Complete as for other shoulder.
SLEEVES
Using 5mm needles, cast on 23 (25-25-27) sts loosely.
Knit 5 rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Work 4 rows purl fabric.
Cont in purl fabric, inc one st at each end of next row, then in every foll 6th (8th-10th-12th) row until there are 31 (33-35-37) sts.
Cont without shaping until work measures 23 (28-33-38) cm from beg, ending with a knit row.
Shape Top – Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows = 27 (29-31-33) sts.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until 13 sts rem, then in every row until 7 sts rem. Cast off loosely.
HOOD (beg at face end)
Using 5mm needles, cast on 64 (66-68-72) sts loosely. Knit 5 rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Work in purl fabric until work measures 18 (19-20-21) cm from beg, ending with a knit row.
Shape Back – 1st row - P30 (31-32-34), (P2tog) twice, P30 (31-32-34). 2nd row – Knit.
3rd row – P29 (30-31-33), (P2tog) twice, P29 (30-31-33). 4th row – Knit.
5th row – P28 (29-30-32), (P2tog) twice, P28 (29-30-32). 6th row – Knit.
7th row – P27 (28-29-31), (P2tog) twice, P27 (28-29-31) = 56 (58-60-64) sts. 8th row – Knit. Cast off loosely.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Darn in all ends. Using half mattress st seam, join shoulder and side seams. Join sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Fold cast off edge of hood in half and join back seam. Sew hood to neck edge, beg and ending at front edges. Make a buttonloop and attach to neck edge as pictured. Sew on button to correspond with buttonloop.
