The Bio-Europe Spring, held this year from 10-12 March in Turin (Italy) will raise the curtain on a pharmaceutical industry that is expected to begin spending an increasing amount of money on external projects. Some 3,000 delegates will meet in the event’s notoriously small partnering cubes for negotiations on some 10,000 opportunities, kick-starting partnerships involving companies across the life science value chain – from large biotech and pharma companies to financiers and innovative start-ups. This year’s DIA annual EuroMeeting will focus on facilitating debate on key issues in the life sciences industry, from how to involve and inform patients and citizens in the whole life-cycle of health products, to the opportunities and challenges of bringing personalised medicines to market. Leading biopharma experts from industry, academic research, regulatory agencies and health ministries will meet from 2527 March in Vienna (Austria) to put patient rights at the center of the discussion under the theme “Different perspectives – one vision: Better healthcare for patients“. The 2nd Austrian Biomarker Symposium 2014 on Early Diagnostics, held from 31 March-1 April in Vienna, provides a unique overview on biomarkers and technologies for a variety of diseases and diagnostic applications. Biomarkers herald a new age in the field of personalised medicine, and the field of molecular markers, imaging technologies and novel point-ofcare diagnostic technologies is rapidly evolving. The symposium offers a unique

source of information to those interested in biomarkers, with a focus on early diagnostics and market access. In 2014, analytica will focus on three topics: food analysis, plastics analysis and genetic/bioanalysis. The trade fair will take place from 1-4 April in the Bavarian capital Munich. More than 1,000 exhibitors from around the world will take the opportunity there to present their products and equipment for labs in research and industry. For the first time ever, the event will also offer a special show on occupational health and safety in the workplace. The Swiss Biotech Day (8 April, Kongresshaus Zurich), the country’s leading biotech conference, brings together more than 300 senior executives from Swiss biotech companies and senior scientists from leading academic institutions. Organised jointly by German BIOCOM AG and the Swiss Biotech Association (SBA), the event’s 2014 programme highlights will include the presentation of the Swiss biotech report and keynote lectures by renowned industry leaders and scientists. And Asia’s largest bio event, BIOtech Japan 2014, will for the first time ever feature a partner country, India, as well as a completely new concurrent show – IVD Japan 2014. Some 600 exhibitors from 20 countries will be at the fair showcasing products and technologies to 15,000 visitors. Getting an early start The 2nd Austrian Biomarker Symposium 2014 on Early Diagnostics provides a unique overview of biomarkers and technologies for a variety of diseases and diagnostic applications. At the event in Vienna, speakers from academia, clinical departments and industry will cover topics ranging from molecular markers for early diagnostics, prevention programmes, imaging technologies, novel POC diagnostic sensor and system technologies to markets for early diagnostics. During the two-day symposium, international experts from academia and industry will address not only the discovery and validation of early diagnosis biomarkers but also their use in clinical practice, including novel point-of-care sensor and system technologies. The conference brings together innovative and forward-thinking members of the biotech and medical community, including leading biomark-
er researchers and technology leaders. A pioneer in the use of saliva as a diagnostic medium, keynote speaker David Wong (University of California, L.A.), will be giving a lecture on detecting and monitoring diseases using molecules found in spit samples. A second keynote speech held by Anthony Turner (Linköping University) will focus on printed biosensor devices for mhealth. Its target audience includes those

Technology at its best From 1–4 April 2014, Munich will once again be the centre of the international laboratorytechnology, analysis and biotechnology industry. When this year’s analytica opens its gates, more than 1,000 exhibitors from around the world will be on hand to present their products and equipment for labs in research and industry. For the first time ever, the trade fair will also include a special show on occupational health and safety in the laboratory.
On the first three days of the fair, the international scientific elite will meet at the analytica conference to exchange information on the current state of the analysis sector, as well as its development prospects. Among others, the topics up for discussion include: Biological Timekeeping by Circadian Clocks, Bio Metallomics, Bioimaging of Tissues and Proteomics in Biomedical Research Drug Testing, and Metabolism in Samples Beyond Conventional Matrices. The analytica forums are perfect for anyone interested in tips that pertain to specific applications. The latest applications and marketable products from the laboratory and analysis market will be presented in lectures and panel discussions in the Forum Laboratory & Analytics, while experts in the Biotech Forum will explain how to meet the latest challenges in bioanalysis. Modern analysis techniques and innovative biological methods have become indispensible in most branches of industry – for everything from controlling the quality of drinking water to testing functional materials. In 2014, analytica will focus on three areas: food analysis, plastics analysis and genetic/bioanalysis. These topics will also be reflected in the programme of related events and in the Live Labs, where visitors can expect lectures and product
presentations three times a day. As part of the Live Labs, for the first time ever, the fair will also feature a special show on occupational safety and health and safety in the workplace. It will include experimental presentations in German and English on how to avoid fires and explosions in laboratories. Experts will also break down the measures that ensure the best possible health and safety standards for laboratory workers.
