Finding new partners and technologies An impressive number of life sciences events are scheduled for Europe’s 2013 conference season. From partnering to scientific congresses, from product shows to technology offerings – this autumn is one long series of highlights that could impact your business. Whether you are looking for a licensing partner, need financing or just want to find out more about the latest developments in R&D equipment and services, you’ll find everything you need to know about what each event provides in this issue of the EuroBiotechNews. With its International Pharma Licensing Symposia (IPLS) the European Pharma ceutical Licensing Group network offers unrivalled access to the business devel opment community in Europe. This year’s event, which will be held from the 18-20 September (see p. 34) in the Irish capital Dublin will bring together some 250 dele gates who work in business development for networking and discussion of the lat est trends in the field. The latest trends in lab equipment and biotech applications will be showcased in

Hanover, where the biennial BIOTECHNICA conference and trade fair will take place from 8-10 October. There four conference streams called ’marketplaces’ will reflect the latest industry and funding trends, among them Personalised Medicine Tech nologies, Innovation in Food, Industrial Biotechnology (or bioeconomy, the main topic at the fair) and BioServices (for biopharmaceutical drug development). This year, the Swiss biotech sector – one of the most productive in Europe – will be at the centre of focus.

Huge fairs and highly specific events – Europe’s biotech sector now has them all.

33_EBSIN8_12_SPECIAL_intro1_tg.indd 33

And this autumn the Polish city of Gda´nsk will also become a meeting point for entre preneurs, young scientists, Big Pharma and funding experts. Formerly two events, the ScanBalt Forum and Bioinnovation Inter national Summit have now merged to pro duce the Bioinnovation ScanBalt Forum, taking place on the 16-18 October in the halls of the Polish Baltic Frédéric Chopin Philharmonic. The conference is dedicated to rapid scientific change, grant opportuni ties and collaborations, biotechnology, life science and bio-business in Poland, Europe and the US. The Bioinnovation ScanBalt Fo rum is designed to meet the needs of am bitious young PhD students and scientists looking for investors and partners for their ideas. The event also targets biotech and life sciences companies, as well as anyone who is interested in trends in biotechnology and innovations for a healthy life.

New partners and new markets Europe’s largest partnering conference serving the global biotechnology indus try – the BIO-Europe – will take place in Austria’s vibrant biocluster Vienna this year from the 4-6 November (see p. 40). In 2012, the EBD Group’s networking system partneringOne® scheduled 15,276 one-toone meetings there. The BIO-Europe is where the continent’s biopharmaceutical scene comes to negotiate new licensing agreements. And in early December, when Europe is setting in for the long, dark winter, it makes sense to head for warmer climes. That’s when the Colombian capital Bo gotá will host the BIOLATAM 2013 part nering event and conference for the very first time. Its aim is to grow into the pre mier event focussed on Latin American biotechnology by combining conferences, business meetings and networking events to facilitate contacts between international companies, investors, entrepreneurs and research centres in the life sciences field. Attendance at the first event is expected to exceed 500 delegates from 20 countries. Following a session on VC, agricultural products will be in the limelight, along with business opportunities in the fields of bio fuels and bioplastics. B

XI International Pharma Licensing Symposium

IPLS: Maith thú! With its International Pharma Licensing Symposia, the Pharmaceutical Licensing Group network offers unrivalled access to the business development community in Europe. This year’s event, held in Ireland’s capital city Dublin, will once again bring together some 250 delegates who work in the field. If the 11th IPLS delivers on its promise, delegates will sum it up as they did the first 10 events: Maith thú – “well done!”

The programme will be split into sections, with each section featuring three presentations from experts in the relevant field focusing on a particular theme. With sessions on the Financing of Deals, Personalised Medicine as well as Mid- to Late-Stage Licensing, IPLS has put three of the hot topics in business development on the agenda. In addition, there will be six workshops spread over two days on a range of subjects that will offer further insight and debate through interactive sessions. Among others, topics will include a session on emerging markets, deal issues like spin-outs and valuation forecasting, as well as case studies of recent successful deals. A feature that distinguishes IPLS from other congresses is the informal and relaxed nature of the networking opportunities throughout the event. Extended breaks, a Welcome Drinks Reception, and an opulent Gala Dinner leave plenty of space for delegates to make contact with both new acquaintances and old friends. B

The IPLS meetings have proven to be valuable symposia for all those involved in business development and licensing throughout Europe and the world. Licenses are the lubricants that keep the pharmaceuticals business up and running. Pharma giants in-license new active ingredients to fill clinical pipelines, while young start-ups out-license products to generate milestone payments and royalties to fuel business.

Themed “Business Development: From Molecule to Market... and Beyond!”, this year’s IPLS will once again address major topics in the healthcare licensing area. The three-day conference programme has been put together by senior industry professionals from across Europe to ensure that the presentations are both topical and varied, with key industry speakers providing their views and opinions.

programme “From Molecule to Market… and Beyond”, will explore all aspects of the industry, through presentations and workshops delivered by respected industry figures. With delegates from across Europe, China and the US, networking is a key part of the symposium. One-to-one meetings can be arranged via the preevent online contact system, as well as during the event.

Jubilee in Hanover

Europe’s central biotech hub

The BIOTECHNICA is celebrating its 20th jubilee this year – a good occasion to make a few changes to the traditional biotech meeting. Visitors to the three-day trade fair can look forward to numerous innovations. Switzerland is the first official partner country of the BIOTECHNICA. Additionally, the organisers have enhanced the exhibition with four marketplaces. In previous years, Switzerland has been one of the largest national exhibitors at the fair, and this year it will be the first official partner country of the traditional biotech meeting. Many of Switzerland’s 240 biotech companies – as well as ma jor Swiss regions – will be presented in the Swiss Pavilion. Director of the Swiss Biotech Association Domenico Alexakis explains why the country became a part ner: “We want to use our presence as a

partner country to demonstrate the great potential and innovative strength of the Swiss biotech industry.” Another innovation at this year’s BIO TECHNICA is four themed marketplaces: Personalised Medicine Technologies, Innovation in Food, Industrial Biotech nology and BioServices. The Personal ised Medicine Technologies marketplace covers molecular diagnostics and relat ed individualised therapeutic approach es. Under the motto ’Innovation in Food’, the BIOTECHNICA will continue to ex pand the choice on offer in the category of Food Biotechnology. Here, as with the Industrial Biotechnology marketplace, the thematic emphasis is on the bioecono my – also this year’s official main subject area. This includes a showcase of inno vative products, as well as the Biobased World, which aims to connect key stake holders in the biobased economy across various sectors and disciplines. The fourth area of BioServices will bring to gether pharma and biotech companies with highly specialised services for biopharmaceutical drug development. B

With an attractive array of new top ic s and inno v a tive marketplaces, BIOTECHNICA 2013 in Hanover, Germany, will host the European bio tech community and its clientele from 8-10 October 2013. For the twentieth time, the trade fair will serve as Europe’s cen tral hub for biotech networking, business and collaboration. The upcoming event will highlight all the latest R&D innovations and advances, as well as the many products and applica tions for biotechnology in medicine, agri culture, food production, industry and en vironmental protection. Attendees can also acquaint themselves with a wide range of related services for biotech and pharmaceutical requirements. Among the keynote themes to be featured at the 2013 show is bio-economics. We very much look forward to seeing you in Hanover next October. Please come and join us as we explore the future of biotech nology together! Have an impact in Latin America

In early December – when Europe is suffering from cold, damp weather – it’s a great time to head for warmer climes! With temperatures averaging over 20 degrees Celsius and three times as many hours of sun as central Europe, Bogotá is preparing to welcome guests from all over the world to the BIOLATAM 2013 partnering event and conference. Organised for the first time, the event is aiming to become the global event for biotechnology in Latin America. BIOLATAM 2013 will combine conferences, business meetings and networking events to facilitate contacts between international companies, investors, entrepreneurs and research centres in the field of biotechnology and related areas. At this first edition, attendance is expected to exceed 500 participants. International delegations from more than 20 different countries are expected to come to Bogotá.

The conference will start off with a seminar on corporate venture capital in the Latin American entrepreneur ecosystem. That will be followed up by a section of special importance to Latin American countries, which are heavily focussed on agricultural products – the advent of a biobased economy and the chances emerging for the region in the fields of biofuels and bioplastics. Conference streams on medical biotechnology will focus on personalised medicine, biosimilars, advanced therapies, and in-vitro diagnostics for infectious diseases. Other topics will include food biotechnology, agrobiotechnology, health products, cosmetics, biodiversity and animal health. At the conference there will be always opportunities for face-to-face meetings. Partnering is the key to promoting business between biotechnology companies, as well as between them and the consumer sectors (pharmaceutical, sanitation products, foodstuffs, energy, etc.) from all over the world that have specific interests in Latin America. B

Biolatam is a partnering forum with a global reach and a Latin American focus that will be held biennially in oddnumbered years. We are seeking to become the leading event for the biotechnology sector in Latin America, as well as for the promotion of business opportunities among biotechnology companies from all over the world whose specific interests are aimed at this region. The forum would also like to be the meeting point for the Latino community with relevant positions in the industry around the world. Biolatam welcomes companies, public institutions and venture capital (VC). The conference programme will cover different areas of biotechnology, especially those with the greatest potential to create an economic and social impact in Latin America. The event is also the perfect place to promote and strengthen relationships between investors and VC funds with origins or an interest in the Latin American market. It’s a major event you can´t afford to miss. We look forward to meeting you in Bogotá! Regina Revilla Pedreira President of Spanish Bioindustry Association (ASEBIO)
