Wonder and Familiarity

Page 1

Wonder & Familiarity Winter 2024 This project began with the 1972 Blue Marble photograph—the first complete image of Earth—whose perfect spherical form embodies both wonder and familiarity. This image served as the beginning of a narrative, prompting an exploration into how scaled-down objects like marbles help us comprehend complex forms. The marble’s material qualities—glossy, smooth, translucent surfaces with swirling color patterns—became key formal and textural references. Inspired by the surrealist distortions in Salvador Dalí’s paintings, particularly his manipulation of familiar forms, the project investigates how to abstract and distort the spherical form of the Earth while maintaining its recognizable essence. Using references such as oysters and asteroids, I developed a series of iterative studies that merge familiar planetary forms with organic, imperfect geometries. These digital explorations examined multiplicity, color gradients, and fluid marbling patterns. The most successful iterations evoke the essence of a marble while diverging from its perfect symmetry. These ideas were further developed into a spatial proposal by colliding spherical forms and casting them in resin. The interior was defined using an algae-based bio yarn, developed through material experimentation, to create a translucent, flexible structure— transforming the conceptual qualities of the marble into architectural form.
