Organic at the heart of the circular economy Transitioning to a circular economy is not optional. It represents the only way to reduce the pressure placed on the earth by human activity. Doing a U-turn, switching from the old linear and extractive model to a new circular and regenerative approach, is the overarching theme of Vetrina Bio Bank 2023, in which the megatrend is “Towards a circular economy”. And organic and biodynamic practices, with their capacity to regenerate soil, biodiversity and landscape, have a central role to play in this process. Many aspects of this new economy can be found in the 20 Bio Bank Trends that, in turn, emerge clearly from the overview of over 100 organic food and cosmetics products. Finally, on the occasion of our 30th anniversary, 14 Ambassadors recognise the informative role of Bio Bank Media and what it means to be able to rely on these informative tools every day. The megatrend: towards a circular economy Take, make, use and dispose. These four actions are the pillars of the linear economy, based on a notion of infinite growth in a finite world. Without taking into account that natural resources are limited. Without taking account of the limited capacity of the planet to absorb increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which cause global warming. The climate crisis, which affects us all, is the product of this unsustainable economy. And so the time has come to do a U-turn, switching from the old linear and extractive model to a new, circular, regenerative approach. Transitioning to a circular economy is not optional. It represents the only way to reduce the pressure placed on the earth by human activity. But this new journey is just beginning if, indeed, only 7.2% of the global economy can be considered circular, as reported by the Circle Economy's The Circularity Gap Report 2023. The guiding principles of the circular economy, on the other hand, are to reduce,

regenerate and redistribute, giving rise to the 16 solutions outlined in the Report, including: putting healthier foods first; choosing local, seasonal and organic food; avoiding waste; increasing energy efficiency; prioritising circular materials and approaches; reusing waste; only buying what is really needed; and extending the lifetime of products. The Bio Bank Trends of 2023 show that organic, and #Biodynamic, are already at the heart of this process, alongside the rediscovery of #AncientVarieties. A #Veg diet reduces the ecological footprint of food, and we have already entered the #TotalVeg phase, with vegan versions of all products now available. #GreenPackaging and #AntiWaste are increasingly influencing purchasing decisions. A return to #Basic food and #Multifunction cosmetics embrace the "less is more" philosophy.#WaterlessCosmetics and #WaterlessCleaning, with little or no water, are the new allies of the environment, our skin and our pockets.

#Veg vegan for all

Fewer vegetarians, more vegans in Italy. The 2023 Eurispes Report reveals vegetarians have fallen to 4.2% (5.4% in 2022), and vegans have risen to 2.4% (1.3% in 2022), for a total of 6.6%. Those choosing vegetarian or vegan products do so for ethical, environmental and health reasons. But plant-based consumption is also on the rise among the rest of the population, to reduce or eliminate animal products, with a focus on plant-based food and cosmetic.

#GreenPackaging plastic-free, recyclable

As we emerge from the disposable era, one thing remains certain: on a planet with limited resources, the best waste is no waste. Maximum attention therefore to the packaging, guided by the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The 2023 Nomisma Packaging Observatory identified the three most sought-after features in packaging: no overpackaging (58%), fully recyclable (56%), with minimal plastic (47%). The same is true for cosmetics.

trends Across the board #AntiWaste zero rubbish

Times of economic crisis and inflation bring heightened attention to waste: more frequent fresh food purchases, singleportion packs to prevent leftovers, smaller sized cosmetics that can be finished before their use-by date, with greater focus on pantry, fridge, and freezer management. According to the 2023 Waste Watcher Report, food waste is in decline: we throw away 524 grams of food per head per week (-12% compared to 2022).

#Local producers & regions

Against a backdrop of raw material shortages and escalating prices, local products are an increasingly strategic choice. At the heart of this lies the short supply chain, organic districts, and product chains involving small producers working together. An example of this is the innovative Italian organic quinoa supply chain. And it goes beyond food; there is growing appreciation for Italian or regionally-specific raw materials in the cosmetics sector too.

#Fermented live, active

Fermentation continues to play a key role, to nourish body and skin. Fermented foods aid digestion, promote gut health, strengthen the immune system and boost the metabolism. Cosmetics featuring fermented fruit, plants and herbs have a symbiotic relationship with the skin, moisturising and protecting it, strengthening its metabolism and improving its texture. Prebiotics and probiotics are also growing in popularity, both in food and cosmetics.

#Hyperprotein pulses and nuts

Plant-based, protein-rich foods are in growing demand year after year. Among the foods that are a source of plant-based protein we can find pulses, grains, nuts, seeds, and seaweed, which now feature across all different product categories: from pasta to baked goods, bars to snacks, but not only. They are used as diet supplements by athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and those seeking to replace animal protein, and for a greater feeling of fullness.

#TotalVeg vegan everything

Not just meat, milk and cheese, but even fish and egg. There are now vegan versions of everything. And these foods are no longer just for vegetarians and vegans, but rather enjoyed by all. An innovation led by the organic companies that succeed in inventing new foods, going beyond the barrier of imitation. Consumers prefer them not only for their nutritional value, flavour and consistency similar to the original, but also for their very small environmental footprint.

#Basic simple, essential

A decisive turn away from ultraprocessed foods, the enemies of cardiovascular health, among other things. Now, consumers are embracing foods with fewer, simple, recognisable ingredients, processed using natural and innovative techniques, which respect the many nutritional properties of organic ingredients. Increasingly conscious consumers are seeking "clean" recipes, "gentle" processes and transparent information.

#FreeFrom sugar, gluten, lactose

The list of "free from" foods remains long, a reflection of both necessity – in response to allergies, food intolerances, and specific medical conditions – and dietary and lifestyle choices. And so labels and packaging highlight what is missing. According to Osservatorio Immagino 2022-1, the most common products for intolerances are those free from gluten, then lactose, milk, yeast, and egg. "Free from" products include those without palm oil, sugars, and salt.

#RichIn fibre & vitamins

Aside from the protein-rich products covered separately above, among foods naturally rich in a particular nutrient, or fortified, those most in demand include, in order of importance, those rich in fibre, vitamins, calcium, Omega 3, probiotics, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc and iodine, as identified by the first edition of Immagino Osservatorio 2023. An underlying trend, in which the details may change each year, but the demand remains the same.

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food" advised Hippocrates. As society grapples with the long-term effects of Covid, there is a greater focus than ever on the crucial role played by the immune system, and the relationship between the effectiveness of its response to external attacks and the health of the gut microbiota. This has led to more and more health-conscious shopping baskets, with a demand for foods that stimulate, strengthen, and build immune defences.

#AncientVarieties a common good

Ancient, local, and forgotten varieties are a true common good. They are more rustic and resistant, are better adapted to our local area, and represent a source of biodiversity, a trove of tastes and traditions, and a wealth of nutritional properties. Hence their rediscovery and promotion: from vegetables like Jerusalem artichoke, purple carrots and yellow "datterini" tomatoes, to fruit like quince, jujube and carob, and grains like spelt, Khorasan, Cappelli and Timilìa.

#Biodiversity nature's capital

Biodiversity – in terms of genetics, species and ecosystems – is key to variety of life on earth in its various forms, and is part of nature's capital, together with air, water and soil. Biodiversity loss means food and energy insecurity, more natural disasters and a decrease in social health. Each of us protects biodiversity when we choose a plant-based diet, local and seasonal products, and foods that re-embrace and promote ancient varieties and autochthonous species.

#Biodynamic beyond organic

Despite attacks aimed at discrediting biodynamic, like those initially levelled at organic, these products are in ever greater demand in Italy and abroad. Now that many conventional companies have branched out into organic, numerous organic operators are shifting to biodynamic as a mark of higher quality. The Associazione per l’Agricoltura Biodinamica estimates 4,800 biodynamic operators in Italy. But only 640 companies have achieved the Demeter certification.

#Ethical global & local

In seeking to strike a new balance between local and imported foods, decisions are increasingly guided by their local availability. The future of fair trade is not limited to the global south, with its millions of small producers. Italy, too, is seeing new prospects and opportunities involving the pioneers of the organic world, the cooperatives working on land confiscated from the mafia, those rejecting the gangmaster system, and those of the social and prison economy.

#WaterlessCosmetics eco-friendly

Little or no water, no plastic packaging, easier to preserve, longer lasting, more concentrated active ingredients, antiwaste dosing, handy everywhere, less transport-related impact. Introducing the innovative cosmetics with new textures for face, body and hair, made from natural and organic raw materials. In solid form or powders to rehydrate, concentrated liquids to dilute, butters, unguents, concentrated oils and pressed serums. All in recyclable packaging.

#PureActives targeted, high-performing

High-performing and effective, pure actives have become key players in the facial skincare routine: hyaluronic acid, plant-based collagen, phytoretinol, vitamin C, co-enzyme Q10 and others. They are popular for their super-fine texture and targeted action: anti-wrinkle, antioxidant, lifting effect, firming, and pigment control. But above all for their versatility of use: pure, combined with each other or mixed into serums and face creams, to meet the needs of the skin.

#Multifunction all-in-one

Minimalism gains ground in cosmetics too. The appeal of all-in-one products is rising. A perfect time and money saver, they simplify the beauty routine from skincare to make-up. Ranging from concentrated products with multiple functions to those that can be used on multiple areas of the body. Fewer products, but always featuring natural and organic ingredients. This trend also extends to the home, with detergents that also soften or brighten.

#Multivitamins caring for skin

Multi-vitamin creams and serums, in which vitamin C plays a key role, offer a true skin care solution, with a range of beneficial effects: helping to maintain skin tone and elasticity, preserve the lipid barrier, protect against damage caused by exposure to the sun and prevent premature ageing, as well as performing moisturising, antioxidant and seboregulating action. Vitamins give skin a rested appearance and have a clarifying and illuminating effect.

#WaterlessCleaning concentrated, effective

Organic, biodegradable detergents with little or no water for laundry, dishes, and more are good for the environment, our skin and our pockets. Using plant-based, mineral ingredients, they are free from optical brighteners and preservatives. Powders, solid products to dissolve in water, or concentrates to dilute in reusable containers, are just as effective, longer lasting, and sustainable, right down to their packaging, and also reduce transport and pollution.

30 years of Bio Bank: tribute to the spark

Bio Bank has taught us loyalty. Loyalty to a project, requiring infinite flexibility to come to fruition. Loyalty when things go to plan, but especially when they do not. Loyalty to lessons learned through trial and error. But above all, loyalty to the initial intuition, the spark that gave rise to it all. The idea of producing an organic yearbook for Italy first emerged in 1993. The project would involve gathering data on existing organic businesses. And a database was required to store the data. The first modest edition of the Tutto Bio hard copy yearbook was published after a year and a half of work, featuring data from 1,200 businesses. Over the years, this would grow to 13,000 businesses, with 25 editions produced up to 2019. The Italian organic portal biobank.it was launched in 1999. The first Rapporto Bio Bank was published in Tutto Bio in 2007, before becoming a standalone publication in 2015; 16 editions have since been published.

Focus Bio Bank - Supermercati & Specializzati (Supermarket chains and organic shops) was published on the two key organic distribution channels in 2017; 6 editions have since been published. This was followed in 2018 by Focus Bio Bank Mense scolastiche (School canteens), the only edition of its kind to date. 2019 saw the launch of Vetrina Bio Bank, a digital and hard copy review sent to 2,500 organic businesses across Italy; 5 editions have since been published. Over the past thirty years, Bio Bank has contributed to creating a shared map of Italy's organic landscape. A communal asset, available to all. It is now time to hand over to the 14 Ambassadors for the 30th Bio Bank, who discuss what it means to be able to rely on these informative tools and how they use the data in their daily work, and recognise the informative role of Bio Bank Media in the organic world. The portal and digital publications allow us to have a quick overview of the market, particularly in the cosmetics and natural and organic cleaning sector, where systematic information can be hard to come by nowadays. We particularly appreciate the digital reports, with their time series data, which provide an insight into market performance and allow us to assess our positioning. We hope that these publications continue in future years, offering increasingly representative reference data, while potentially also analysing the links between organic and sustainability in the food and cosmetics supply chains.

Above all, Bio Bank's digital publications provide an annual look at up-to-date data on the sector. Always a valuable source of information on organic

Starting point and guiding star for organic evolution

In order to operate effectively in the market, every company needs indispensable data and information, and Bio Bank is a valuable tool that has always provided such. I began working with and for the organic world in 1996, when consumption was decidedly lower than it is today. We have come a long way together, but there is a lot still to do. In terms of information, it remains important to clarify the concept and significance of organic, because many consumers still have little clear understanding of it. In a changing world, I think organic should be given increasing space, and recognised as the best agricultural and livestock practice that protects the health of humans, animals, and the whole planet.

Bio Bank is proof that, despite the nearutopian vision that inspired it, the organic scene has grown over the years to become organised and professional. Bio Bank is the guiding star of this evolution. As a child, I saw the Tutto Bio annual publication grow from year to year, and understood it was important to my parents. Then, after university, I began working at the cooperative. I was tasked with relaunching the Italian market, and the first day, the general manager pointed to Tutto Bio and said: "Start by studying this!" And this is what we still do with new workers of the cooperative today, pointing them towards the Bio Bank publications as soon as they arrive. Bio Bank is the starting point and guiding star.

A reliable information service in the organic world

Bio Bank has been, and continues to be, of great value to us with its informational tools that have supported us and evolved over time. We have used the Tutto Bio annual for many years, with its clear overview of the organic world in Italy. Now the data is available online via the database of organic businesses, from shops to restaurants and online retailers. The digital publications feature interesting data on the evolution of the market and various specialist channels, particularly now that organic lines are readily available in large-scale retail outlets and online. Bio Bank is also a great window onto to the trends in the sector and new products from the key players, an important observation point.

We use Bio Bank for its database and market analyses. As coordinator of the Italian sales division, the databases in the portal are extremely useful to help me identify new clients, especially specialist stores and dedicated online retailers. The procurement office uses the organic food company database to identify potential suppliers. The digital reports and other publications are indispensable to the marketing department, to understand the direction of the market. Overall, it is a good and reliable information service. 2023 represents an anniversary year for Valdibella too: 25 years in business, and 30 for Bio Bank. A sort of older sister that has supported us over the years. Particularly at the beginning, introducing us to this world and its key players. But whereas, at the beginning, the organic world embodied the deepest sense of rustic farming, embracing human and environmental values, the advent of large-scale industry and largescale retail means today's organic scene is very different, with profit skewing matters. The support of Bio Bank and those who believe in the value of organic practices – both to grow crops and as a tool to build a fairer society – has been fundamental to navigating this situation.

It owes its smoothness, complexity and body to the historic "ripasso" wine-making technique which involves the Valpolicella wine being infused with the pomaces used to make Amarone or Recioto.

Certification What is set out in the European regulations, which are constantly being updated to keep pace with the ongoing evolution of the sector? And how to recognise an organic product from the label. by Rosa Maria Bertino

From pioneers to law

The pioneers of organic farming in Europe, beginning in the early 1970s, were fuelled by a great ideological drive, but had no regulatory guarantees. Indeed, it would be another twenty years before the first European regulation on organic farming was introduced in 1991 with European Council Regulation 2092/91, later replaced in 2009 by Regulation 834/2007 and on 1 January 2022 by Regulation 848/2018, which provides for group certification for small-scale producers or new products such as salt. A regulatory framework that is constantly being updated, including the extensive national legislation. The final pieces in the puzzle take the form of Italian Law 23 of 9 March 2022, awaited for over 15 years, which regulates and incentivises organic practices in Italy, together with the subsequent ministerial decrees setting out operating procedures for the fund for development of organic production (Italian Ministerial Decree 658282/2022), establishing organic districts (Italian Ministerial Decree 663273/2022), and reorganising the control system (Italian Ministerial Decree 148/2023). Additionally, on 6 December 2023, the State-Region Conference finally approved the 2024-2026 National Action Plan, a fundamental step towards development in the sector. Still waiting to be addressed, however, are the longstanding and serious issues of bureaucratic simplification and digitalisation.

Control bodies and standards

There are 19 active control bodies in Italy, plus two solely dedicated to the Bolzano province. They are recognised by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies, based on the criteria of independence, impartiality, effectiveness, competency and reliability. Accreditation in accordance with the ISO 17065 technical standard, on the other hand, is entrusted to Accredia, who oversees their work, monitoring their performance over time. There are also a number of private specifications, overseen by national associations and issued to companies that satisfy more restrictive criteria than those provided for in the regulations. These include Demeter, which identifies biodynamically grown products.

Euroleaf guarantee

Consumers can identify whether a food is organic by checking the label, i.e. the product's identity card. The first thing to check for on the label is the Euroleaf, the European organic mark. Mandatory since 1 July 2010, it consists of twelve white stars on a bright green background, with a comet in the centre. To use the Euroleaf, organic products must: • contain at least 95% organic ingredients • comply with the control and certification system rules • specify whether or not the product was grown/reared within the Eu • specify the code of the control body.

food Certification Naturally, the specific information required for organic products is in addition to the mandatory information for all food products. Aside from hunting and fishing products, water, certain additives, vitamins and mineral salts, all agriculture, livestock and acquaculture products (including those obtained through foraging) can be certified, if they comply with organic regulations. These are based on respect for the fertility of the soil, the plants, the animals and the ecosystem that they form together, without the use of GMOs, fertilisers, weed killers, pesticides and synthetic veterinary drugs.

How to read labels

In order to read labels properly, it is important to know the various categories of products provided for by the European regulation: • unprocessed organic products Euroleaf mandatory products consisting 100% of exclusively organic ingredients of agricultural origin (e.g. apples or pulses). The term "organic" appears in the product sales description and list of ingredients, if provided. • 95% organic products Euroleaf mandatory organic ingredients make up at least 95% of the weight of the ingredients of agricultural origin (e.g. vegetable sauce). The term "organic" appears in the product sales description and list of ingredients. Any non-organic ingredients of agricultural origin must be among those listed in annex IX of Reg. EC 889/08. • products with organic ingredients Euroleaf not permitted containing one or more organic ingredients. The term "organic" only appears in the ingredients list, and the label specifies the total percentage of organic products in the overall ingredients of agricultural origin.

• hunting or fishing products with organic ingredients Euroleaf not permitted the main ingredient is a hunting or fishing product and as such it cannot be certified as organic. All other ingredients of farming origin must, however, be organic (e.g. tuna in extra virgin olive oil). The term "organic" can appear in the sales description, but only with reference to the organic ingredients (such as the oil in the above example). • in-conversion products Euroleaf not permitted products made up of a single plant-based ingredient grown according to an organic method for at least twelve months. The term "in conversion to organic farming" can appear in the product sales description. When the European organic logo appears, the place of farming of agricultural raw materials also appears, formulated as follows: • Eu Agriculture, where the agricultural raw material has been farmed in the European Union; • Non-Eu Agriculture, where the agricultural raw material has been farmed outside the European Union; • Eu/non-Eu Agriculture, where part of the agricultural raw material has been farmed in the Eu and part outside the Eu. The Eu Agriculture or non-Eu Agriculture indication may be replaced or supplemented by indication of a country or a region in the case where all agricultural raw materials have been farmed in that country or in that region. Finally, since 2009, use of the term "organic" in the agriculture and food industry - and its abbreviations, such as "eco" and "bio", in the Italian context - is exclusively restricted to organic products, putting a stop to organic cheats, who were using such terms incorrectly.

The growth of organic cosmetics

Long available in health food and herbal stores, and historically popular via e-commerce, natural and organic cosmetics are experiencing a significant growth. Sold through organic perfumeries, the numbers of which are growing year on year, they're also increasingly available in hypermarkets and supermarkets, discount stores, specialist beauty and personal care chains and in the perfumery section of pharmacies. In the absence of European regulations, it is very difficult for consumers to differentiate between pseudo-natural products, with small amounts of organic ingredients, and truly organic products. Herein lies the importance and role of voluntary certification, based on private or international standards, certified by accredited control bodies. While they may involve very different specifications, they represent the current benchmark.

Long live transparency!

According to the Bio Bank 2022 census, over 500 companies have taken this challenging step towards transparency, obtaining certification for over 14,000 natural or organic cosmetics products and 1,000 eco-friendly cleaning products. There are eight Italian control bodies with their own cosmetics standards, who also perform certification in accordance with other private Italian or international standards, such as Cosmos and Natrue. Seven of these also

oversee eco-friendly cleaning products. There are other cosmetics industry standards that are applied in other European countries, some of which are also internationally recognised. The only European certification system for eco-friendly cleaning products, meanwhile, is Ecolabel, which focuses on the environmental impact of products, as Nordic Swan, the official Scandinavian certification system.

Natural, organic and eco-friendly

The guidelines contained in the various specifications can be simplified to offer the following definitions: • natural cosmetics contains ingredients of plant-based, animal and/or mineral origin, not harmful to health • organic cosmetics contains a variable percentage (which can be specified on the label) of certified organic ingredients of plant-based and/or animal origin • eco-friendly cleaning products contains ingredients of plant-based and/or mineral origin that are effective and safe for humans and the environment, and organic ingredients. The very welcome result is that conventional producers have been encouraged to move towards formulas that are free from unpleasant ingredients. Labels are proudly declaring these missing ingredients, resulting in cosmetics that are not yet organic, but increasingly "green".
