The megatrend? Less is more!

With his "less is more" philosophy, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the brilliant 20th century German architect, revolutionised the world of architecture and design and inspired a return to basics in other fields too, from technology to fashion. If we wanted to sum up the twenty organic trends discussed here in a single trend, we would adopt that same motto for food, cosmetics and cleaning products. For some time now, the impetus has been to remove. Remove additives, preservatives, colourants, artificial fragrances, GMOs, pesticide residues, herbicides, hormones and thousands of other harmful substances from our plates. Remove parabens, petroleum products, silicone and other unpleasant ingredients

from cosmetics. Remove synthetic fragrances, colourants, optical brighteners and other potentially risky additives from detergents. An unstoppable pruning process, driven by greater focus on our health and the environment. And now the ingredient lists in organic and eco-friendly products are also getting shorter. Those making excellent, highquality and innovative products with the shortest lists of ingredients are considered the most virtuous. Not to mention the current evolution in terms of packaging: recycled, recyclable, reusable, refillable, biodegradable, anti-waste, plastic-free or with new materials that reflect the philosophy of the contents. #Origin Italian, regional, local

The more global the market becomes, the greater the demand for provenance: the phrase "100% Italian" on a product boosts its sales by 9%, according to the Rapporto Coop 2018. "Made in Italy" is gaining increasing ground, and not just abroad: be it the country (100% Italian), the region (100% Tuscan), a particular area (the Dop and Igp quality marks, with Italy excelling in Europe), short supply chain, local, farmto-table or closed-cycle business.

#Veg vegan & vegetarian

The growth in consumption of vegetarian and vegan products for ethical, health and environmental reasons is unstoppable (+7.4% between June 2017 and June 2018, according to Osservatorio Immagino data), while consumption of products of animal origin continues to fall. Plant-based alternatives and offerings have multiplied over time, with increasingly innovative products made from grains, pulses, fruit and vegetables. And not just in food.

#BabyKids babies & children

The Nomisma survey carried out as part of Osservatorio Sana 2018 reveals that families with children under 12 years of age account for 43% of specialist shops' typical clientele. The birth of a child often coincides with the introduction of organic products into the household, which then extends to other members of the family. And the range of organic foodstuffs and products on offer to help look after little ones continues to grow, both in specialist stores and supermarkets.

#DeGustibus tastes & needs

Consumers' tastes and needs have changed over time, becoming more varied and multifaceted. The market has responded by offering an increasingly vast and comprehensive selection. Like pasta, which today takes up entire shelves: wholewheat, egg, fresh, special grain, ancient grain, made with pulses, enriched with superfoods, functional, gluten-free. The same is true of cosmetics, with increasingly specific and innovative products.

#Sustainable 360 degrees

Sustainability is not just about the product, but rather its entire life cycle, to best reduce the environmental impact. And so recycled, recyclable, biodegradable, eco-compatible, plasticfree, refillable, reusable, anti-waste etc. become distinctive features that can make the difference. The most focus now is on packaging, and the pursuit of innovative and eco-friendly materials that perfectly reflect the philosophy of the contents.

#FreeFrom gluten & lactose

A significant proportion of consumption both in terms of number of items (18.6% of foods on the market) and value of sales (6.8 billion) - involves products free from certain ingredients, although the growth rate observed by Osservatorio Immagino was just 1% between June 2017 and June 2018. Leading the pack in terms of sales are gluten-free and lactose-free products. These are followed by products free from soya, egg, added sugars, salt, yeast, peanuts, palm oil, etc.

#Richin long live fibre

Also on the increase are foods rich in elements that are beneficial to health, with a growth of 5.2% between June 2017 and June 2018, according to Osservatorio Immagino. Among the most popular: "rich in fibre", "whole", "source of plant-based protein" as well as those containing vitamins, calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, Omega 3s and antioxidants. While certainly not wishing to forego the pleasure of food, the goal is to improve or maintain wellbeing while eating.

#Superfood turmeric & ginger

Riding the crest of the wave for many years, superfoods have become key ingredients in many recipes: exotic fruit such as coconut and mango in yogurts, nuts such as almonds and cashews in plant-based specialities, seeds such as linseed and hemp in pasta and baked goods, grains such as oats and quinoa in drinks, berries such as blueberries and goji berries in energy bars and, above all, spices such as turmeric and ginger in everything!

#AncientGrains a common good

The use of ancient grain varieties in pasta, bread, pizza and baked goods has risen by 250% over the last twenty years across the world, and particularly in Italy, as confirmed by Firab, the Italian Foundation for Research in Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture. There are many reasons for this: they're Gmo-free, contain less gluten and have greater nutritional content, they protect biodiversity, promote a short supply chain and are stone-ground, making them less refined.

#FermentedFoods gut-friendly

The most ancient food preservation system is now trendier than ever. This is thanks to an increasing awareness of the link between gut health and general wellbeing. In fact, fermented foods aid digestion, promote gut health, strengthen the immune system and help the metabolism. From classic examples like yogurt, kefir, tempeh, miso, kombucha and cider, to innovative plant-based alternatives to cheese, made using fermented nuts.

#Biodynamic standing out

The standout products of the organic world, biodynamic goods are becoming increasingly popular in Italy and are in super-high demand internationally. Now that many conventional companies have diversified with an organic line, numerous organic farmers are shifting to biodynamic principles as a mark of quality. There are 4,500 biodynamic farms in Italy, according to Biodynamic Association estimates, but just over 400 have the prestigious Demeter certification.

#Ethical fair & just

Consumers are increasingly conscious of the values embodied by the overall history of a product. Respect for the environment is necessary, but no longer enough. Respect for people is also required, represented by social and economic justice. This means fair earnings and dignified work, adherence to fair trade principles, inclusion through social farming, standing up against the mafia and opportunities for redemption through prison work programmes.

#AntiWaste zero rubbish

The Italian Food Bank Network since 1989, the Last minute Market since 1998, Stop Food Waste Day since 2014, the anti-waste law since 2016. A few dates that show that it has taken too many years, and an economic crisis, to take account of waste. Starting with domestic rubbish, with 15 billion euro worth of food being thrown away each year in Italy (Waste Watchers and Last minute Market 2019 Report). Anti-waste is gaining ground as a key word in consumption.

#Homemade back to the kitchen

Cooking means taking time for yourself and others. But also eating healthier, saving and spending time together. You can begin with simple, quality ingredients or make use of ready-made components. There's a whole universe of special flours, yeasts and seeds to make bread, pizza or sweets, mixes to make burgers and seitan and cultures to make yogurt and kefir. Not to mention plants that you can grow on the balcony to have aromatic plants and edible flowers at your fingertips.

#ReadyMeals food is served!

The perfect solution when time is scarce, or for a quick lunch break, without compromising on flavour and goodness. Skin care, and face care in particular, dominates the cosmetics industry, including in the organic sector. Antiageing products don't promise eternal youth, but rather more toned, brighter skin with improved elasticity, using absolutely natural ingredients. These treatments are highly effective as they're formulated with active ingredients that protect, hydrate and deeply nourish skin and stimulate cell renewal, slowing down the natural ageing process.

#Urban multi-use & multi-function

The beauty routines typical of conventional cosmetics are the order of the day in the organic world too. Cream, serums and versatile, multi-use and multi-functional liquids abound, perfect for those who live in the city and want to achieve a lot in very little time. They offer anti-ageing and anti-pollution actions in a foundation, or can be used on the face, body and hair, and perhaps they're also suitable for men, or they cleanse and nourish skin while removing makeup.

#Detox anti-stress & anti-smog

Tiredness, stress and atmospheric pollution in big cities all put a serious strain on skin and hair. These masks, peels, scrubs, creams and serums deeply cleanse and revitalise tired and stressed skin, using plant-based active ingredients with antioxidant properties. The top ingredients include: mud, seaweed and plant-based carbon.

#FairExotic organic & fair

Exotic ingredients, conjuring up faraway and mysterious lands, have long been a feature of beauty products. But natural synergy has led organic cosmetics producers to choose raw materials from fair trade supply chains, drawing together environmental and social values. Precious oils rich in active ingredients such as argan, coconut, baobab, jojoba and rosa mosqueta oils, or super-vitamin and antioxidant butters such as shea and cocoa butter.

#Hypoallergenic skin sos

There has also been an increase in hypoallergenic cosmetics and detergents, responding to an increase in sensitive skin, or rather sensitive skin syndrome (SSS), a disorder affecting 80% of the world's population. There has also been a rise in rarer, quite harmful syndromes, such as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), caused by the cocktail of chemical substances contained in personal care and home cleaning products. The main target is the face and hands.

Certification What is set out in the European regulations, which are constantly being updated to keep pace with the ongoing evolution of the sector? And how to recognise an organic product from the label. by Rosa Maria Bertino

From pioneers to law

The pioneers of organic farming in Europe, beginning in the early 1970s, were fuelled by a great ideological drive, but had no regulatory guarantees. It took twenty years for organic products to be regulated at a European level. Legislation was only introduced in 1991 with European Regulation 2092. This was replaced in 2007 with Regulation 834, which came into force two years later, setting out specific rules for the production, control and labelling of organic products. A regulatory framework that is constantly being updated. A new regulation that will come into force in 2021 has, in fact, already been approved. Not to mention national legislation, including the Italian 2018 control decree.

Bodies and specifications

There are 16 active control bodies in Italy, plus two solely dedicated to the Bolzano province. They are recognised by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies, based on the criteria of independence, impartiality, effectiveness, competency and reliability. Accreditation in accordance with the ISO 17065 technical standard, on the other hand, is entrusted to Accredia, who over-

sees their work, monitoring their performance over time. There are also a number of private specifications, overseen by national associations and issued to companies that satisfy more restrictive criteria than those provided for in the regulations. These include Demeter, which identifies biodynamically grown products.

Euroleaf guarantee

Consumers can identify whether a food is organic by checking the label, i.e. the product's identity card. The first thing to check for on the label is the Euroleaf, the European organic mark. Mandatory since 1 July 2010, it consists of twelve white stars on a bright green background, with a comet in the centre. To use the Euroleaf, organic products must: • contain at least 95% organic ingredients • comply with the control and certification system rules • specify whether or not the product was grown/reared within the Eu • provide the company name and address of the producer, preparer or vendor and the relevant code • specify the code of the control body. Naturally, the specific information required for organic products is in addition to the mandatory information for all food products.

Certification

Aside from hunting and fishing products, water, salt, certain additives, vitamins and mineral salts, all agriculture, livestock and acquaculture products (including those obtained through foraging) can be certified, if they comply with organic regulations. These are based on respect for the fertility of the soil, the plants, the animals and the ecosystem that they form together, without the use of GMOs, fertilisers, weed killers, pesticides and synthetic veterinary drugs.

How to read labels

In order to read labels properly, it is important to know the various categories of products provided for by the European regulation: • unprocessed organic products products consisting 100% of exclusively organic ingredients of agricultural origin (e.g. apples or pulses). The term "organic" appears in the product sales description and list of ingredients, if provided.

• hunting or fishing products the main ingredient is a hunting or fishing product (e.g. tuna in extra virgin olive oil). The term "organic" can appear in the sales description, but only with reference to the organic ingredients (such as the oil in the above example). • in-conversion products consisting of a single plant-based ingredient grown according to an organic method for at least twelve months. The term "in conversion to organic farming" can appear in the product sales description. When specifying the place where the agricultural raw materials were farmed, the following wording must be used: • Eu Agriculture, where the agricultural raw material has been farmed in the European Union; • non-Eu Agriculture, where the agricultural raw material has been farmed in third countries;

• 95% organic products organic ingredients make up at least 95% of the weight of the ingredients of agricultural origin (e.g. vegetable sauce). The term "organic" appears in the product sales description and list of ingredients. Any non-organic ingredients of agricultural origin must be among those listed in annex IX of Reg. EC 889/08 or temporarily authorised by the Member State.

• Eu/non-Eu Agriculture, where part of the agricultural raw materials has been farmed in the Eu and a part of it has been farmed in a third country. The Eu/non-Eu indication may be replaced or supplemented by indication of a country in the case where all agricultural raw materials have been farmed in that country.

• products with organic ingredients containing one or more organic ingredients. The term "organic" only appears in the ingredients list, and the label specifies the total percentage of organic products in the overall ingredients of agricultural origin.

Finally, since 2009, use of the term "organic" in the agriculture and food industry - and its abbreviations, such as "eco" and "bio", in the Italian context - is exclusively restricted to organic products, putting a stop to organic cheats, who were using such terms incorrectly.

The growth of organic cosmetics

Long available in health food and herbal stores, and historically popular via e-commerce, natural and organic cosmetics are experiencing a significant growth. Sold through organic perfumeries, the numbers of which are growing year on year, they're also increasingly available in hypermarkets and supermarkets, discount stores, specialist beauty and personal care chains and in the perfumery section of pharmacies. In the absence of European regulations, it is very difficult for consumers to differentiate between pseudo-natural products, with small amounts of organic ingredients, and truly organic products. Herein lies the importance and role of voluntary certification, based on private or international standards, certified by accredited control bodies. While they may involve very different specifications, they represent the current benchmark.

Long live transparency!

According to the Bio Bank 2018 survey, almost 500 companies have taken this challenging step towards transparency, obtaining certification for over 11,000 cosmetics products and approximately 600 eco-friendly cleaning products. There are seven Italian control bodies with their own cosmetics standards, who also perform certification in accordance with other private Italian or international standards, such as Cosmos and Natrue. Six of these also over-

see eco-friendly cleaning products. There are other cosmetics industry standards that are applied in other European countries, some of which are also internationally recognised. The only European certification system for eco-friendly cleaning products, meanwhile, is Ecolabel, which focuses on the environmental impact of products, as Nordic Swan, the official Scandinavian certification system.

Natural, organic and eco-friendly

The guidelines contained in the various specifications can be simplified to offer the following definitions: â&#x20AC;˘ natural cosmetics contains ingredients of plant-based and/or animal origin, not harmful to human health â&#x20AC;˘ organic cosmetics contains a variable percentage (specified on the label) of certified organic ingredients of plant-based and/or animal original â&#x20AC;˘ eco-friendly cleaning products contains ingredients that are effective and safe for humans and the environment made from raw materials of plant-based or mineral origin and organic and/or fair trade raw materials. The very welcome result is that conventional producers have been encouraged to move towards formulas that are free from unpleasant ingredients. Labels are proudly declaring these missing ingredients, resulting in cosmetics that are not yet organic, but increasingly "green".
