By Jeffrey Charboneau As many of you are already aware, the Bingo Bugle elected to cancel this year’s World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise. “Due to the Covid-19 virus and low participation for this year, we regret that the Bingo Bugle will be canceling the cruise in November as we believe it is in everyone’s best interest at this time,” organizers posted on the cruise

Now, as a bonus, organizers are adding the first ever Spring Fling Bingo Cruise—a unique and exciting getaway to tide folks over until the World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise returns this fall. Manners Everyone! Dear Aunt Bingo: I know your column is usually about the business of Bingo, but I want to weigh in on the etiquette of Bingo—specifically, the lack of manners by certain players. I am sure there is no place in the Bingo regulations that says it is OK for players to come to Bingo and behave like rude pigs! But they do! Spilling food all over the tables and floor, tossing their used Bingo paper anywhere they like, bumping into people who are either standing in line or sitting in their chairs and not apologizing, wearing enough perfume to kill a swarm of mosquitos—this is just a sample off the top of my head of behaviors I see week after week. Let me add a few more: body odor, soiling the restroom toilets (and floor!); belching and passing gas as if no one notices or minds; loud talking, laughing and arguing, particularly during the games; cell phones vibrating and ringing…I would love to keep going but I do not think there is enough room in your newspaper for the whole list! At this point I am sure you are rolling your eyes and thinking of me as some kind of a prissy prude. I am not! I am a normal person with a family and friends and a busy social, work and church life. But I am also a person who was raised with basic manners and an understanding that when in public situations, a person should behave with a certain level of decorum and expect the same

SEPTEMBER 2020 from those around them. What has triggered the “last straw” and made me write to you? This very afternoon while attending Bingo I was seated with my Bingo friends when a woman walked past us in the aisle behind me and passed gas! It was a pretty full hall and the tables she was walking between had at least eight people seated there and we ALL heard it! Next, of course, we all SMELLED it! I can’t believe someone didn’t vomit! We were all very vocal about the disgusting display and made sure the woman who did it knew it, but she never looked back or even apologized. Who behaves like this? Animals, that’s who! Please publish my letter and wake people up to the fact that all this bad behavior is just unacceptable. —Clean it Up in Colorado Dear Clean: Sorry, girl, but it sounds like you play Bingo in a barn! I’ll admit that over the years I’ve had run-ins with my share of discourteous people—at Bingo and elsewhere—but it has never gotten so bad that I felt the need to begin a list. Still, it never hurts to share a letter like yours as a reminder that we all need to be thoughtful to those around us—particularly during this covid-19 pandemic when courteous social distancing has become so fundamental to our health and wellbeing. Wearing facemasks and keeping six-feet-plus away from others has been a valuable reminder that it isn’t just about you, it’s about everyone. As we slowly and cautiously return to Bingo halls, casinos and other gaming establishments, let’s not just keep social distancing in mind, but all forms of player courtesy as well. —Aunt Bingo Share your views! The American Legion Needs Your Help I came across an unusual confab outside the coffee shop today. What was different this time was the presence of younger veterans. “We’ll help you,” a young vet said to the group. “All you have to do is contact us and we’ll be here. Or there. Or wherever you are.” I pieced together what was going on. The senior veterans were concerned about being able to form a funeral detail. One of their group was in the hospital and it wasn’t looking good, either for the veteran or the local American Legion Post itself. The younger veterans, probably Sandbox era, had come down to offer assistance (and home phone numbers) should they be needed for a funeral. I stepped up next to the one who seemed to be in charge and went
into my spiel. “Join the American Legion here in town,” I suggested. I explained that senior veterans make up the biggest percentage of membership in the American Legion nationwide. And they’re not getting younger. Day by day we lose more of them. Maybe a Post will have 20 members... on paper... but only three are active. They’re physically unable to pull off most of the fundraising events like they used to, and many Posts are likely to lose their meeting facility. Therefore, I finished, if young blood doesn’t come in and beef up declining membership, the groups would disband, gone forever. Is this the situation in your area, Legions closing and disbanding due to declining membership? Here’s a thought: Go to a couple meetings. Find out what the Legion can do for you and your family, and what you can do for the it. It might be more than you ever imagined. Putting My Fat Foot Down When Kate and her new husband came home to live, we were so happy to have them added to our little community that we had a big feast to celebrate. Kate is always happy with a slice of ham and potato salad, but I was determined to get some greens into her, to preserve her life, so to speak. She growled at me, but finally succumbed to my urging and ate some green salad. Her hubby did better, diet wise, and I began to think he would do as an addition to our family. He is a good-looking man and earns a good salary at Microsoft. They quickly found a place to rent and then came the really hard part, Kate moving her things out of the house. We had lived together all our lives and she didn’t want to take many things, but I urged her to, and she did finally take some kitchen stuff to get started, although I doubted it would improve her cooking. Kate would always be Kate and nothing could

SEPTEMBER 2020 change that. “My feet are fat,” I complained, staring down at them accusingly. “So what,” said Kate, “What difference does it make if all of you is fat?” “A whole lot of difference,” I said. “I don’t want to be fat and ugly.” “Pretty on the inside, that’s what matters.” I could tell this was an argument I wasn’t going to win so I changed the subject. “I am going out with Larry again today. What are you up to?” “Larry? Again? He will clumsy you right into oblivion if you aren’t careful.” “Oh well it could be a fun ride.” Larry picked me up then and we whizzed off to a casino. Not the first one. We passed that one by, “A bunch of crooks,” was Larry’s comment. Larry had actually googled the casino to learn the Bingo start time. I was impressed and said so. He went to get our buy-ins and I arranged all of our other stuff so it would be handy. He returned with a big stack of cards and I began taping them together for easier handling. It was hard to keep track of so many, but when Larry erupted with a “Bingo” I was truly surprised. “It’s here,” he said. “I saw it just a minute ago.” At last he found it and turned it over just in time. “Now we are even,” he said. “That win just matched our buy-in.” At intermission we had coffee which I carried to our place being careful not to spill a drop. “What do you do with the rest of your time?” I asked Larry. “I’m a computer theorist,” he replied. “I develop new theories for computers and set them up so
they are usable for the layman.” I’m sure my eyes crossed so lost was I. “Oh,” I said, not having the least idea what he was talking about. Larry won again in the second half with four corners plus the N row. “Now we are ahead,” he proclaimed victoriously, “I’ll beat these guys yet.” I began to realize this was a real competition. Larry against the casino. “You can’t win,” I said. “It’s the casino.” “Oh yes I will,” he said. “It’s a matter of predictability.” Again, I had no idea what he was talking about. “I want to go home,” I said. “I have a headache.” “Not now!” he protested. So, I stomped on his foot with my big fat foot.

This way, there is a ready paper trail that you can refer to. If you have to call a customer service line, ask for an email address that you can correspond with. * If your scallions are growing like crazy, you should know that you can freeze them to use later. Snip into smaller portions and freeze in a single layer for a couple of hours. Transfer to a container and store in freezer. When a recipe calls for scallions, just take what you need and use immediately. * Save energy and heat by using an electric kettle to make hot water for tea. It uses less energy than a stovetop kettle, and it won’t heat up your kitchen. * “You can use dishwasher detergent to clean your bathtub. I moved into a place with a very stained and dirty bathtub. I filled the tub with very hot water, put a cup of detergent into the water (the kind you put in a dishwasher, not soap) and stirred it to dissolve the powder. Q: For the past two years during the summer months, my local ABC affiliate had three fabulous game shows in a row beginning at 8 p.m., starting with Celebrity Family Feud and ending with Match Game. I can’t remember the name of the show, but the one in the 9 p.m. hour was emceed by Michael Strahan with two celebrities each playing with a contestant. Family Feud and Match Game are both back this summer, but the Strahan show is not. Will it be returning before the end of the season? — D.J. A: ABC’s Summer Fun & Games lineup was back again on Sunday nights this summer, but The $100,000 Pyramid seems to be missing. It’s not in the promos, and it looks like it’s been replaced by Press Your Luck, hosted by actress Elizabeth Banks. According to sources like TVSeriesFinale.com, Pyramid was renewed for 2020, so my guess is that unlike the other Fun & Games shows, it hadn’t begun filming before the pandemic shut down production in all of Hollywood. Hopefully it’ll return for next summer’s Fun & Games, if not sooner.

What do all these famous people have in common: Prince William, the Queen, rocker Robbie Williams, actors Russell Crowe and Catherine ZetaJones? Well, they all love to play Bingo and are proud to tell you so. I don’t know about you, but when I think of Bingo I think of wonderful, ordinary people having fun. I don’t usually think of Prince William sitting down for a session of number-calling. I found out about this when Diane E., of Zanesville, Ohio, wrote to bobonbingo@earthlink. net: “Hey, Bob,” she writes. “I can’t believe what I read the other day while standing in line at the grocery. One of the tabloids had a big article about the number of celebrities who enjoy an occasional game of Bingo. “The prince went to one of London’s most-famous Bingo halls and never won a game. But he smiled throughout the evening. So, Bob, if Bingo is good enough for Prince William, it’s good enough for me!” For too many people, the image of Bingo is of an OLD FOLKS GAME. Well, in some ways it is. Of course, none of us–in my age group–can likely go out and play rugby and tackle extreme skateboarding…so, Bingo suits
me fine. Oh, and one other thing. I got an e-mail from Mary Grace, of Garden City, Kansas. She writes, in part: “Bob, I think you do the game of Bingo a big disservice by saying that people should be LOUD when they play. Some of us think your concept of a Bingo hall must be like playing Bingo in a bus station. I prefer more quiet surroundings. Thanks, Mary Grace.” By the way, she works in a library. Let’s wrap up with a poem sent in by Donnie E, of Lockport, New York. He writes: “Bob, I’m not much of a poet, but see if you like it: “There’s a hall I love to go to where good friends fill the chairs. We meet there every Thursday and throw away our cares. Bob Adams calls the numbers and he’s just at the right speed. But he has the knack of calling numbers I simply never need. Twas G-44 I wanted, to complete my coverall. And as the game progressed great excitement filled the hall. Then Bob, he called my number…he called G-44. I shouted out my BINGO…and so did 30 more! Bob Adams smiled and took a pen to that 31-way split. My money came, I counted it, three dollars, that was it. But, that’s OK with me, I say, my face in a great big grin. Cash AND prizes? Hi Guy, Obviously, money is the best Bingo prize there is, but I wonder why Bingos don’t add a few extra games and offer some non-cash prizes. It could add more fun to the games by letting us play more Bingo, and I think this could make for more of a carnival atmosphere knowing that when you go to Bingo you could come home with $500, but you could also walk away with a coffeemaker, a quilt, a set of
towels, or other things. I started thinking about this idea a while ago when I went to the state fair. Our state fair has a big area where you can play games of chance and win prizes. Among these games is one where you compete with other players by tossing rubber balls into individual boxed grids and try to get a row of balls before anyone else. If you are the first one to get a row, you win a ticket which you can take to a large prize display and select a prize. If you win multiple times and collect several tickets, you can choose even bigger prizes. How great would it be to be able to win prizes this way not just once a year during the fair, but every time you went to Bingo? I think it would give Bingo a homier feel, and maybe be like Bingo probably was back in its early days. I think it would change the dynamic of the competition for prizes, too. Cash prize after cash

Minding Your Gambling Manners This is the final installment on my casino manners series, covering Slots & Video Poker. As noted, even if you are a seasoned veteran, it won’t hurt to brush up on your casino manners to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation. --If the casino is crowded, it’s common courtesy to play only one machine. Also, before you drop your first coin into a machine be sure no one else is playing it (when the casino is not crowded players often toss coins into adjacent machines).

SEPTEMBER 2020 --If you hit a hand pay jackpot on a slot machine, after you receive your payoff from the attendant you should play off the winning combination (i.e. play one more spin). It’s also customary to tip a prompt and courteous attendant that brings you the money. --When you need to take a restroom break, you can “hold” your machine by either placing a coin bucket over the handle or on the chair or you can lean the chair against the machine. Likewise, if you are looking for a machine to play, avoid playing those which have been held by players. --If a player mistakenly plays “your machine” while you are on break, don’t get upset or abusive at him/her even if they hit the jackpot. Yes, it’s upsetting if this happens, but the probability that you would have hit the jackpot even if you stayed and played is slim since you would have had to hit the spin button at the exact same split second as the lucky player did (it was only at that split second that the machine’s internal computer generated that specific winning jackpot combination). --Finally, it goes without saying that you should keep your playing area clean. Don’t throw trash into the coin trays, or around the machine you’re playing. This seems trivial but it’s a nasty habit that too many slot and video poker players have developed.

Old Habits in the New Normal Life consists of ups, downs, and other crap. Ignore the crap, up the music, and down the margaritas to enjoy ourselves. Make the most of what life offers. –Anonymous It’s September already. The autumn equinox is September 22 and that marks our traditional transition from summer into fall. How did that sneak up on us in these days of difficulty and vexation? Time has not been flying as we continue to battle the virus, practice social distancing, and wear masks for protection from Covid19. Some schools are opening; others are not. That makes me sad as I shudder at the idea of students staring at computer screens for hours on end with little or no peer interaction and minimum teacher contact. Hubby and I have been cautiously traveling to a couple of our favorite places, Las Vegas and Biloxi, Mississippi. We flew into Vegas and were there for a few days, then drove southeast to Laughlin for a few days. There were no empty seats on the plane as we flew west and none on the plane as we flew home. We wore masks; others did not. All of the casinos were diligent in passing out masks and providing hand sanitizer. Our temps were checked every single time we entered a casino. Some of the
casinos turned off every other slot machine. Some of the casinos had plexiglass dividing players at table games. None of the casinos where we stayed had valet parking service or maid service for the rooms. I missed being pampered by having our room straightened and the bed made ready for our afternoon naps. LOL. Robert and I are not messy pigs, but after a few days our trash did build up and we requested trash bags. We played bingo several times and I continued my unending losing streak, whereas Robert did win a little; very little I might add. At the end of June, we flew to Biloxi on a not so crowded junket. Most days there are full of sunshine and gulf breezes with afternoon rain showers common; but from May to September the humidity is brutal. If you hop from casino to casino on the airconditioned shuttle, aptly named the Casino Hopper, it’s not an issue. Seniors pay seventy-five cents for each stop and day passes can be had for $6.00. That’s a real deal for multiple on and offs. The bad news is that hurricane season is from June –November so keep that in mind. Fun fact: Barq’s Root Beer was invented in Biloxi in 1898 and the Barq’s Building is still located in the downtown district. The casinos, as in Vegas, required masks. Employees walked around and told anyone mask-less to put one on or else. I don’t know what or else meant as we wore ours. There were no temp checks and still no maid or valet service. On another topic, September 13 is National Grandparents Day. Remember to call, write, or visit yours. Celebrate the love that you share. Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes
Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted. Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms
that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing. Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received. Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize. Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month's contest. Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing. By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize. The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check. Please, don't call the Bingo Bugle office to find out who the winner is, we won't tell you. And, if it is you, you will be disqualified.
