Seasonal Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo, Oh no! It’s nearing the end of summer! And with it comes the end of my wonderful Bingo season! Unlike a lot of your readers, apparently, I do not play Bingo from fall through spring and less during the summer. I do the reverse: I am a very busy teacher and only get the chance to really enjoy Bingo during the summer school break. It appears to work in my favor. I’m told the attendance at some of the halls drops up to 50% in June, July and August, which means less competition. Of course, it also sometimes means fewer games and smaller jackpots, so, like everything in life, seasonal Bingo, too, has its trade-offs. So, as the sunsets over my Bingo summer, I wish you and all your Bingo fans a wonderful rest of the year playing Bingo. Think of me fondly as I trade my dauber for a red pen and my Bingo paper for 5th grade e-book reports. I’ll miss you!
Dear Carol, I feel bad for busy folks like you who have to cram their Bingo into pockets of time during the year and then give it up during others. I’ve heard from people who only play during vacations, others who only play when they visit family out of town, and some who only play when they participate in the Bingo Bugle’s World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise. (Although to be honest, if I could only play one week a year, I would definitely want to do it aboard a cruise ship sailing the Caribbean Sea!) One benefit to only being able to play Bingo at certain times of the year is that it makes it even more special to you. As the saying goes: Eat chocolate cake every day and eventually you will get sick of it. Eat it sparingly and you will love it for a lifetime. OIG Holds the VA Accountable
The Office of Inspector General for the Department of Veterans Affairs has been busy. Despite COVID, the OIG managed to keep working, and it has checked in with its congressionally required six-month report. The eye automatically zips to the bottom line: The dollar impact from its efforts during the past six months amounts to $1,923,417,054. You don’t need to count the commas; that’s 1.9 billion dollars it identified in one way or another. For every dollar in the OIG budget, it got back $21 in return. During the six months, the OIG made 109 arrests, issued 652 administrative sanctions, put out 124 publications, talked to 14,129 hotline contacts and made 389 recommendations to the VA. The biggest category in that $1.9 billion is “Fines, Penalties, Forfeitures, Restitution and Civil Judgments,” which brought in a cool $755 million.
PICKS OF THE MONTH Dragging the Classics: The Brady Bunch — When producers randomly pull actor names and potential situations out of a hat and mash them together, here is the result. Three original cast members of the classic 1970s sitcom teamed up with drag queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race to precisely re-create a Brady Bunch episode. Yes, it’s corny. Yes, the actors are long in the tooth to be playing teenagers, and their acting is a little stiff. But for lifelong Bunch fans, this is guilty pleasure. Costumes are accurate, set design is perfect, and drag queens Kylie Sonique Love and Kandy Muse provide hilarious yet sincere perspectives to playing Jan and Cindy Brady. (Paramount+) The Artist (PG-13) — New this week to Hulu’s current offerings is the 2012 Academy Award-winner for Best Picture. Starring Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo, this French comedy-drama is a tribute to the magic of the silent-film era of Hollywood. Set from 1927-1932, the plot revolves around an older silent-film star who has a chance meeting with an up-and-coming starlet whose career he then helps propel. Filmed in black-and-white, and largely silent except for the musical score, The Artist also won
The OIG put out some excellent reports during that time as well. Here are two: — The VBA (Veterans Benefits Admin) didn’t test the skills of claims processors from 2016 to 2019, even though it’s a congressionally mandated requirement. Not only did the VBA not provide additional training to many of those who failed the tests, it didn’t even bother to give skills tests to 4,700 of the 10,800 people who are processing claims. — VA health care had no way to track patients who had received various medical implants, such as cornea or dental. That means if there was a problem or a recall, there was no system in place to find those veterans. Of 10,000 purchases of implant material, 2,900 purchases were either miscategorized or not even put in the system, making them impossible to track. For 18 months, 45% weren’t tracked and $1.1 million in material (714 items) could not be located. Nearly 300 unrecorded items were found in storage.
Oscars for costume design and original score. It is a throwback to an almost forgotten style of movie, and a welcome change from the modern. (Hulu) Fresh Fried and Crispy — Food critic Daym Drops visits eight cities across the U.S. to highlight unique and decadent fried foods. Focusing less on the recipes and more on the final dishes, the show uses a lot of slow-motion effects and up-close camera angles to draw out the indulgence of that first incredible bite. It’s so visually enticing, you’ll find yourself desperately craving a mile-high Maryland blue crab sandwich or a San Diego-style cast iron-fried ribeye steak. (Netflix) Critter Country Vets (Season 2) — The popularity of animal-focused shows continues in this docuseries based in rural Georgia. Friends since childhood, Dr. Terrence Ferguson and Dr. Bernard Hodges own and operate two Critter Fixer vet clinics, whose motto is “We Treat ‘Em All.” So don’t expect the usual cat-fight injuries or dogs that ate the car keys. These docs tend to everything from an alligator with a lung infection to a lethargic chinchilla, without ever losing their sense of humor or love for the job. (Disney+)

Tai Chi Bingo We had a hot game going at our local Bingo hall when my pal Shawn grabbed at his back and uttered a moan. “What’s up?” I asked. “Oh, I don’t know. My back just keeps seizing up at odd times. I never know when to expect it.” He rubbed at a spot on his back and grimaced. “Usually Bingo will divert me, so I don’t feel anything, but it is not working tonight.” “I’ve got some pain killers if that will help,” I offered. “Thanks,” he replied “but I don’t like to take palliatives. I like to get at whatever is causing the pain. I go to an acupuncturist if it gets too bad.” Someone Bingoed and we moved to a new game. “I can give you a rub if that will help.”

SEPTEMBER 2021 “I think winning might help,” he laughed. “But don’t worry about it.” Wendy wandered over at intermission and offered raw veggies, her personal cure-all. We crunched and Wendy observed, “Wouldn’t it be neat if we could do something as much fun as Bingo and it could be healthy at the same time.” I agreed and we decided to figure out a way for Bingo to help your back feel better. We could advertise this new benefit. My friend Harry was the one who came up with the idea of stretching during intermission. And he just stood right up and started leading everyone in stretches! He had us put our hands on our hips and lean gently from side to side. Then he had us lean our arms over in front and roll gently forward to where we were almost touching our toes. After that he had us reach and reach, rise up on our toes, roll our heads and shoulders, raise our knees; I could not imagine easier or more rewarding exercise and we all started to feel energized. “Wait,” I said, struck with a new idea. “We could name these stretches like Bingo game patterns.” “Yes,” agreed Wendy, “Like the diagonal could be called the Long Stretch.” “Or the big X could be the Double Stretch” someone added. “The double Hollywood could be the Shoulder Roll,” Wendy chimed in. “And we could advertise them in our program and promotions” she
added. “How come you started leading the stretches, Harry?” I asked. Harry said these stretches always helped him, so he decided he might as well stand up and get others to stretch along with him. “You performed a great service,” I told him. “Where did you learn these exercises?” “They are some of the warm-up stretches for Tai Chi,” he said. “It is a wonderful form of exercise. You really should try it. Some folks, even old folks, do it every day.” I’m not big on discipline of any sort, but I think I’ll give it a try just for fun. Meanwhile Bingo started up again and was is even more fun after those head and shoulder rolls!

I Love to Hear from You As you know, I can be easily reached at this e-mail: bobonbingo@ earthlink.net. Recently I got a letter from Jim in Lincoln, Nebraska. In part, he writes: “Dear Bob, as much as I love Bingo, I hate the fact that two of the halls in which I play have so many patterns (ways of winning) that I never know if I have a winner or not. I remember, a year or so ago, you wrote a column pleading with Bingo managers to make it easier to play the game. Could you please repeat part of that column? Thanks, Jim in Lincoln.” Well, Jim I’d love to. Here is the heart of what I wrote: “My dad could add four-digit numbers in his head. I can’t add two and two. That is why I find it very difficult to play more than a six-on Bingo card or to remember all the possible winning combinations. I really feel that Bingo managers should re-think the kinds of patterns they use. Even the old hall in Indiana where I first played in 1957 has too many patterns.
“So, there is a temptation to assume that in Bingo halls where you can either buy paper or an electronic machine, the hall makes the games so confusing that people opt to spend more money than they planned in order to buy a machine. There is one hall in southern California where the numbers are called so quickly and the winning patterns so complicated that few CAN successfully play paper. I mentioned that to the Bingo manager there. His reply was: ‘Buy a machine!’ I got the message. I never went back. I do, though, love the addition of FOUR CORNERS as a winning combination. “I would think there are a lot of other people who, like me, have trouble keeping track of anything but SIMPLE Bingo patterns. I would assume that I likely have won several times in the past but didn’t realize it. This all reminds me of a woman who used to play five six-on cards at a hall in Las Vegas and never daubed any card, until she had a winner. She kept all the patterns in her head. I nearly fainted the first time I saw her do that.” I really think no one ever reads this column. I have made so many suggestions during the past twenty years and seen so few changes made. I have long said that we PAY for Bingo and should not fear telling the Manager about changes we want. But, so few of us have the guts to do that…and, so few managers have any power to change anything. See you next month. Bob.

Q: I love my two fluffy cats, “Jake” and “Manny,” even though I am allergic to the dander in their fur. Antihistamines help, but not completely. Would an air purifier help keep the air clear? — Jemma G. in Kansas City, Missouri A: An allergy to pet dander can be tough to keep under control — so much so that some pet owners give up their pets. I’m so glad you’ve kept your family together. Pet dander is generally underneath a dog or cat’s coat, near the skin. They shed fluffy bits of fur almost constantly, and dander is carried off with that fluff. Because dander can be tiny, it’s hard to isolate and get rid of. An air purifier may help, but only
if it’s the right one to trap dander. Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter — one that can be changed easily. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters trap particles as small as 0.5 microns. Avoid “ionizing” air purifiers as these don’t trap as many dander particles; plus they can be expensive. The size depends on how much of your home you’d like the air purifier to work in; for example, desktopsized units have a range of less than 200 square feet, which makes them ideal for desks or next to your bed. No single strategy will reduce dander or other allergens. Tackle the issue from multiple angles. Dusting and vacuuming the house frequently can reduce dander, and brushing your cats’ hair daily will reduce extra shedding. My advice? Bring your own collapsible canvas chair or a couple of nice cushions. It will make a world of difference. —Guy
Torture Chairs? Hi Guy, What is with the crappy chairs at Bingo? They kill my back! And it doesn’t seem to matter where I play—they all have the exact same clangy rickety metal folding torture chairs ranging from 20 to 50 years old!! Seems to me they would do a lot more business if they’d get rid of them and buy new. My back would sure appreciate it. —Brian L., California Hi Brian, I think many readers understand just what you’re talking about. Recently I went to Bingo in the town where I grew up and hadn’t been back to in years. The Bingo was in the church basement, and I was shocked to see that the tables and chairs were the exact same ones I used at lunch time when I attended the church’s school. That made them at least 40 years old! And trust me, after a couple hours sitting in one of those old chairs, you felt every one of those 40 years.
Hi Guy, This doesn’t really have anything to do with Bingo except that a man I saw at Bingo finally made me decide to write to someone about something that really bothers me. What is with this fashion of men wearing a two or three days worth of beard stubble? Don’t they know it looks sloppy and ridiculous? On young men it shows that they’re still not old enough to grow a full beard, and on older men it makes them look slovenly. A friend told me that this style started with young guys when it became fashionable to look like they’ve been partying for days. (What’s attractive about this?) She said older men began picking it up, and that some older guys also do it to try and hide a double chin. (An unshaved man with a double chin. That’s hot?) Last night I was at Bingo and a roughly middle-aged man came in with his three-day stubble. He wasn’t dressed poorly and he wasn’t bad looking (only one chin), but the stubble really detracted

from his appearance. I was really tempted to say something to him but chickened out. I decided to write to you instead. Will join me in trying to put an end to this fashion mistake? —Ellen, via e-mail Dear Ellen, Oh boy—fashion advice! Here’s my two cents. First off, shaving is a pain. Every day a man must take sharpened steel and scrape it across his face. It’s rough stuff! So, you can see why men young and old would embrace any opportunity to dispense with shaving, particularly if they could use fashion as an excuse. That said, the three-day growth look definitely is not for everyone— me included. I look like I just came off a two-week bender. It can also be kind of itchy. But on the weekend, when there are no pressing social engagements, I often will go without shaving. I’m told it’s actually recommended by dermatologists, who say shaved skin needs to rest now and then. And again, if there’s a medical excuse not to shave, we guys are all over it. In the end, one man’s scruff is another’s eyesore. However, what my fellow Golden Touch dice controllers and I do is influence which dice faces come up by setting the dice a certain way and throwing them our special way. We change the probabilities by reducing the number of sevens or increasing the appearance of other numbers.
Dice Dominator Dom LoRiggio, known in craps circles as the “The Dice Dominator,” has turned the craps world upside down with his uncanny ability of being able to control the dice when he throws them. He was featured on the History Channel’s Dice Dominator and co-authored the book (with Frank Scoblete), Casino Craps: Shooting to Win. Here are excerpts from a Q&A I did with Dom. When and how did you get started playing craps? Throughout the late 1980s and early 90s I was an advantage blackjack player. I got interested in craps after reading several dice books by Frank Scoblete about the Captain and the Arm and I was intrigued by the idea of getting the edge at craps using a controlled throw. In the late 90s I started to practice a controlled throw and then I took a poorly designed course in controlled shooting and that got me started. I worked on the throw for six months before I really had it down. A couple of years later I met Frank Scoblete who was researching a book and we went to the craps tables where he wanted to see me roll. Well, I wanted to see him roll, too. I had a half hour roll. Scoblete was impressed. Then he came right back with a half hour roll himself. Boy was I impressed. Can you explain to readers how you can control the outcome of your rolls? The game of craps is a game of probabilities inherent in two
What are the steps in a controlled throw? In dice control, you have to set the dice properly, stand at the right distance from the back wall, grab the dice properly, grip them properly, and throw them softly with the proper amount of backswing so they land softly on the layout, and then hit the back wall and die. It takes practice and discipline. It is a skill that most people can achieve if they work at it. The casinos require that you hit the back wall so doesn’t that make dice control impossible? Not at all. The Golden Touch throw that Frank Scoblete and I teach and that is the subject of our book, Casino Craps: Shooting to Win, must hit the back wall to be successful. If we miss the back wall the throw is usually random, as one die is doing something completely different from the other die. When we miss the back wall, we grimace because now we must rely on luck for the seven not to show. How long would it take an average person to learn the Golden Touch dice control technique? How does a person practice? I am an average person; so is Frank. It took me six months of practice before I knew I had an edge and was comfortable going into the casinos to play. I practiced almost every day on a craps station that I built. You don’t have to buy a craps table, but you do have to simulate one so that you can practice your throw. How does a player know he is influencing the dice? There are two methods that we

use to ascertain and then calculate what our edge is. For new dice controllers, we recommend using the SRR formula–known as Sevens to Rolls Ratio. This is a way to show in an easy formula if we are actually able to change the probabilities of the game. Using the hardway set, which shows hardway numbers all around the dice set with the end pips being the 1 and the 6, we can see if we are reducing the appearance of the seven. The seven usually appears once every six rolls on average. If you do about five thousand rolls using the Hardway set and you find that the seven is appearing once every 6.5 rolls, then you are probably changing the game. At that point you then use the powerful software program, Smart Craps, to prove with statistical certainty that you are influencing the dice outcomes and how much of an edge you have over the casino.

What's News in Nevada . . . New Vegetarian Restaurant in Chinatown One-hundred percent vegetarian restaurants in Las Vegas are few and far between (and generally don’t last too long) and dedicated vegetarian Asian restaurants are even rarer, but one has opened at the southwest corner of Decatur and Spring Mountain, in the former Bund Shanghai space. Saffron features “a fusion of traditional East Asian cuisine and approachable Western vegetarian” with such dishes as fern-root Singapore noodles, traditional clay pot rice, fried banana flowers with tamarind sauce, umami eggplant with tofu, mushroom dumplings, exotic-mushroom tempura, and vegetarian curries, with vegan cheesecake for dessert and Asian beer and sake. The 90-seat restaurant is overseen by chef Louross Edralin, a contestant on Season 4 of Hell’s Kitchen who ranked in 7th place. Sand Dollar Opens New Location A longtime Las Vegas venue for live music and craft cocktails, the Sand Dollar Lounge, will open a second location at the Plaza, bringing a late-night live music downtown. The Sand Dollar Blues Bar opened in 1976 on Spring Mountain Road at Polaris and quickly became one of the top blues bars in the country. It closed in 2007, reopening a couple of years later as the Sand Dollar Lounge. Sand Dollar Downtown will occupy 5,000 square feet next to the casino, with live music Thursdays through Saturdays, a full menu of craft cocktails, and pizza by Pop Up Pizza. The opening date hasn’t been announced, but it’s expected to be sometime this fall. Just Walk Out from Amazon When the Fred Segal Market opens at Resorts World on Monday, it will be the first retail location in Las Vegas to deploy Amazon’s
Just Walk Out technology. The Market, a sundries and souvenir shop next to Fred Segal’s men’s store, will offer shoppers the effortless checkout that Amazon pioneered to use at its Amazon Go convenience stores and is now rolling out at its Amazon Fresh supermarkets. When customers enter the store, they pass through automated gates where they select Just Walk Out or the regular checkout process. To Just Walk Out, they can scan a QR code in the Amazon app, their palm on the Amazon One palm-reading device, or a credit/debit card linked to their Amazon account. The Just Walk Out system uses computer-vision cameras, weight sensors, and deep-learning algorithms to detect merchandise that shoppers take from or return to shelves; the items are tracked in a virtual cart. When shoppers exit the store through the gates, the system automatically debits the customers’ Amazon account and sends a receipt to the app. The system has been used successfully for several years at nearly three dozen Amazon Go stores. Vickie’s Diner Reopens White Cross Drugs, which operated on Las Vegas Blvd. South near Oakey for 48 years, had a landmark diner, first named Tiffany’s Cafe, then renamed Vickie’s Diner after it was sold to Vickie Kelesis. Even after White Cross closed in 2012, Vickie’s remained open until August of last year, when the building was sold. Now, Vickie’s has reopened as of July 28 in a storefront at the venerable Commercial Center at 953 E. Sahara Avenue. The new location is double the size with twice as much capacity, but the look, reportedly, will be as close to the original Vickie’s as possible. So will the menu.

Road Tripping RoadTRIPoPHOBIA: the fear of not having any road trips currently booked. —Unknown Road trip, road trip! Every chance we get, Robert and I take off on road trips far and near. Casinos are our destination of choice and so recently we ventured to three different locations. Our first stop was Harrah’s in Metropolis, Illinois. In case you don’t know, the fictional Metropolis was the home of Superman from the planet Krypton. In my youth I spent many an afternoon reading about his adventures in comic books and watching the old TV series starring George Reeves. The real Metropolis, the one we visited, declared itself the Hometown of Superman on June 9, 1972, and erected a fifteen-foot painted bronze statue of the man of steel. It’s an attention getter and a great photo op. There is also the Super Museum located at 517 Market Street. It has over 70,000 items of Superman memorabilia from the iconic superhero’s 75+ year history. As for the casino, it’s small but has newer machines and a dedicated video poker area which I love. After leaving Metropolis, our destination was Tunica, Mississippi. On our route near Memphis is Bonanza Bingo, 2888 Gwynn Road, Nesbit, MS. Located in the DeSoto Shrine Club, Bingo Bonanza offers traditional paper bingo as well as electronic daubers, and pull-tabs. SEPTEMBER 2021 Next up was Harrah’s Tunica. The Horseshoe Tunica is known for catering to serious gamblers, particularly table players, and is recognized for its liberal, playerfavorable rules and its comp policies. The casino is open 24/7 but unfortunately only the sportsbook and the poker room are non-smoking. As a nonsmoker, boo to that, but otherwise this casino is a winner although we were not. Our last stop was Harrah’s, Gulfport. This scenic spot is a wonderful place to relax and unwind after a long drive, or even a short one. At Harrah’s we sampled the Mix and Mingle Restaurant for breakfast and lunch and had a leisurely dinner at Magnolia House. Other dining options include Steak and Shake, Starbucks, and Blind Tiger. Starbucks closed really early while we were there, 2pm, which seemed odd to us. Blind Tiger is connected via a bridge over the road and has a wonderful water view but their menu offerings are a little pricy. As for the casino, their video poker included newer machines although there weren’t many of them. Slots were plentiful and newer varieties were included. Other than Harrah’s, there are multiple other casinos in this beautiful area, Palace Casino being our favorite. It’s all nonsmoking so we could breathe while playing, always a bonus. If you don’t feel like driving to the different options, there is a casino shuttle available. Alas, for the overall trip we were not monetary winners except for our enjoyment, good food, and relaxation. Winning is the goal, but at our ages, having a good time is just as important. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big, and for all you grandchildren out there, don’t forget Grandparent’s Day is September 12. Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you.
