Bingo is Back With Safety Precautions - Hurray!

Wisconsin Bingo Operators have worked hard implementing safety plans to keep their Bingo Players and Volunteer Workers safe from the danger of contracting Covid-19.

Bingo games have been a favorite way of socializing for many people. The quarantines, lock downs and “Safer at Home” orders interrupted their regular recreation. Now, after months of postponed Bingo - Bingo is Back. Many of your preferred Bingo Halls are back up and Running.

Some examples of the precautions taken are: Tables placed at prudent distances with limited seating per table. Some Bingo Halls have provisions for players living in the same household to sit together without the limitations of social distancing.

All Bingo Workers wear masks or face coverings.

Bingo Sheet sellers, Bar Tenders and Food Service Workers may even operate from behind plexiglass barriers for the safety of the buying public. All food is dispensed by workers to stop cross contamination of serving utensils.

We have also noticed that hand sanitizer is plentiful at Bingo Halls, disposable face masks are available for sale or given away and workers use their spare time to clean and sanitize surfaces.

With all of these new procedures and safety practices in use, the level of safety from disease is enhanced at our Bingo Halls in the State of Wisconsin.

If you are so inclined, visit your Bingo Hall for yourself and observe how they have gone the extra mile to keep you safe.

One downside of the precautions is the capacity of many Bingo establishments is now limited due to the social distancing.

The Bingo Operators ask for your patience and indulgence. It may be a good idea to arrive a little earlier to make sure you get a seat.

FAREWELL TO A PUBLISHING ICON

Robert Raymond Lee 1950 - 2020 West Allis - Robert (Bob) Raymond Lee, the former editor-in-chief of this newspaper, The Bingo Bugle and owner of the parent company Paper Trails Inc. passed away at home on Saturday, August 15, 2020 with his wife at his side. Bob was 70 years old and is survived by his wife Christine (nee Ramthun); two daughters, Erin Lee and Heather Lee; his granddaughter, Rhaeanne Lee; and his stepsister/ sister-in-law Cathleen Ramthun. He is also survived by other relatives and great friends. Bob served in the US Air Force, Worked as a machinist salesman and publisher for 25 years. Without him, the Bingo Bugle may not have survived to serve Wisconsin Bingo Players and Operators. Robert had a great sense of humor, a strong character was helpful to others and honest in all respects. Services were held. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Arthritis Foundation or Gilda’s Club - Madison are appreciated

Bingo Adapts to Changing World Dear Aunt Bingo: When the Covid-19 pandemic was in full swing and at its scariest, no one had to lecture me twice on wearing a facemask, practicing social distancing and, the smartest and simplest move of all, staying home.

Luckily, as a retiree, it was easy for me to stay close to home much of the time. It also got pretty boring pretty quickly, but I hung in there and followed the rules as every intelligent American did and should.

As my community moved from phase one to phase two to phase three, I actually felt myself relaxing a little, being less fearful of going for a walk around the neighborhood, taking a drive to the grocery store or touching the handle of a self-serve gas pump.

But my social life stayed mostly unchanged, consisting of phone calls with family and friends and not much else.

Activities, like my beloved Bingo, remained in limbo. That is, until one afternoon when I got a phone call from my friend Elaine, who said that her community center was having an outdoor Bingo session. “Bring a folding chair and something to rest your Bingo paper on and you’re good to go,” she said.

I grabbed my Bingo bag, a clipboard from my desk and a folding chair from the garage and met Elaine, appropriately masked, in the community center parking lot. It was a beautiful late summer afternoon and the crowd wasn’t too large, so it was easy to place our chairs a safe distance away from each other and the rest of the players in the center’s big side

Workers brought us our Bingo paper (no lines!) and handed it to us using long-handled pinchers.

When Bingo started, hearing the first number called was absolute heaven! It had been so long, and I really, really missed Bingo so much!

Neither Elaine nor I won anything, but it hardly mattered.

We got to get out and do something social, play Bingo again, and visit for a while.

After our outing we both scoured the Internet for other outdoor Bingos and found two more—one at a library and one at another community center. We attended both and had a few friends join us.

Each one was just as careful about seating and social distancing as the first and made for very enjoyable outings.

I strongly encourage people who feel that they have been spending too much time isolated at home to look for Bingo and other activities like these that are occurring outside and are managed safely.

They are a dream come true!

—Janice J., Florida Dear Janice: Your letter was perfectly timed. It arrived just a day after I attended my second of two very different outdoor community Bingos.

The first was a neighborhood Bingo a friend invited me to. No cash prizes, but a lot of jovial competition and candy bar prizes.

The second was an official charity Bingo that was moved down the street from an indoor auditorium to a park. Early birds got the picnic tables; everyone else contended with sitting in their own folding chairs or on the ground. It was a little breezy and a little buggy, and the player turnout wasn’t great, which translated into smaller prizes. But the determination of everyone to have some semblance of a “normal” Bingo outing was clear, if not 100-percent realized.

And I won $20!

Caught in the Act The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General has been extremely busy.

What’s astonishing is the criminals who actually think they’re going to get away with their crimes.

A gun store thief claimed, in court in front of a judge, that he had been awarded two Purple Hearts. He was trying to get a lower sentence on a couple of other firearms offenses, including stealing 87 guns from a store and then being a felon in possession of guns. Among other things, he claimed Iraq service and said he got the medals for saving another soldier. He showed photos of his (fake) Purple Heart certificates.

Nobody was fooled.

Then there was the idiot who defrauded cemetery services customers out of a half million dollars by taking the payments and using them for personal gain and gambling.

We are at the end of the coronavirus theater movie releases, and what is being released now are direct-to-DVD titles or garbage titles with little to no information. As a result, we will offer themed columns like this one when reviewable movies are not available.

Sometimes, though, the OIG handles emotionally tough cases, like the VA hospital nursing assistant that murdered seven hospitalized veterans and was planning to kill an eighth by injecting them all with lethal doses of insulin. In one case medical staff discovered the patient’s blood sugar level and were able to revive him... until the nursing assistant came back and injected him again, killing him. Nursing assistants are not allowed (or trained to) administer medication.

Multiple law enforcement agencies cooperated, leaving no stone unturned to rein in the killer, conducting 350 interviews, serving 60 subpoenas and so much more. Still, there are many unanswered questions, such as why wasn’t the insulin locked up to keep unauthorized people out of it? Why didn’t anyone notice a pattern that went on for over a year? But the biggest question might never be answered: Why? Why on earth did she do this?

Beauty Shop (2005) — Part of the Barbershop comedy series, this gem features Gina (Queen Latifa), who is such a dedicated mom that she moves from Chicago to Atlanta so her daughter can attend a special music school. There, she takes a chance on opening up a salon to spite her former boss, with hilarious results.

Mamma Mia! (2008) — On the eve of Sophie’s (Amanda Seyfried) wedding, she interacts with three special guests — the three men who could potentially be her father.

All were lovers of her free-spirited single mom, Donna (Meryl Streep), who runs a bed and breakfast on a gorgeous Greek island. It’s a musical, using only the songs of the Swedish superpop group ABBA.

Erin Brockovich (2000) — Facing a desperate situation, an unemployed single mom of three uses her feminine wiles and dogged determination to land a job in a legal office. Then she adds in her big brain and some serious grit to unearth a massive coverup of an energy company’s dumping toxic waste and poisoning a whole town.

Julia Roberts stars as Brockovich.

Where the Heart Is (2000) — Pregnant and abandoned, Novalee Nation (Natalie Portman) gives birth in a Walmart. Aided by the kindness of strangers, she sets out to raise her baby daughter Americus with love. Bonus single mom: Ashley Judd plays nurse Lexie, who befriends Novalee and has three kids of her own.

Baby Boom (1987) — Diane Keaton headlines as JC, a corporate executive turned surprise single mom when a relative names her as guardian and unexpectedly dies.

Maternal duties pull her focus from her high-stakes advertising job, and she moves to the countryside to regroup, emerging as a baby food magnate.

Little Man Tate (1991) — Jodie Foster directs and also stars as Dede, whose 7-year-old son Fred is a blossoming genius in academics and a gifted musician, but alienated in the company of other children. Being a single mother, she walks a tightrope between supporting Fred’s intellectual and emotional growth.

Yappy Days Our friend, Janis, has this very cute little dog that she takes everywhere with her. She has a specially fitted carrying case and he goes with her to her job selling real estate as well as any other place she has to go, including Bingo.

No one objects to her having a case along with her and I have only once heard the little dog make noise, but that was a doozy.

It was at a Saturday night Bingo and Janis, with Pappy (short for Papillion) in his pet-case, shared a table with us. Kate was having a bout with allergies and sometime into the games, she began sneezing. Every time she sneezed, Pappy barked, a

short sharp woof. The caller called another number, Kate sneezed, and Pappy barked, twice this time.

Everyone stretched their necks looking for the dog.

I opened a soft drink for Kate as that frequently stops the sneezing and Janis spoke reassuringly to the puppy case. Kate sneezed again and Pappy yapped his disapproval. The caller frowned in our direction and I had visions of us all being asked to leave.

“Could we give him something to eat?” I asked Janis.

“No,” she replied.

“Pappy eats and drinks on a very strict schedule. Obviously, because of his elimination, I can’t afford to let him get off it. I am in real estate sales,” she said with pride. She thought about it for a minute and then undid the case and stroked Pappy.

All was quiet for a few minutes while we finished the caller’s choice game and moved into the final blackout.

I began to relax, thinking the crisis had passed. Then Kate sneezed, again, and Pappy let out a bark, followed by Kate sneezing again and Pappy barking—well, you get the picture.

I thanked the stars it was the last game, as I wanted to be out of there, but we had one more

scene. This time it was my fault.

When I get nervous, I frequently get the hiccups and this was no exception. Kate sneezed, Pappy barked, I hiccupped, and Pappy barked even louder. Through all this it was just not possible to be calm and hear the numbers.

“Hush, all of you,” hissed Janis.

Then Kate got the giggles between sneezes and I hiccupped and giggled right along with her. Pappy took this as an invitation to bark even longer and louder. Janis tossed her dauber onto the table and proclaimed, “I give up!”

“I’m sorry, you’ll have to take the dog out,” said the caller.

“All right, I know!” said Janis.

She rose, picked up the puppy case and left me to play her cards.

Kate sneezed and Pappy gave one final bark on the way out the door.

Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. I was really surprised this week when I got an e-mail from a woman who claims to have every back issue of this column. She signed off on the letter as simply, Silly Sally. There was no mention of where she lives. But, nonetheless, the letter is very interesting: “Dear Bob,” she writes. “I am likely your only fan who actually saves all your columns. I know you have been doing your column in the BINGO BUGLE for nearly two decades.

During that time, you have been a strong crusader for non-smoking areas in Bingo halls...for small halls in small towns...and for the rights of Bingo players to complain when they find something wrong. “‘You pay for the game,’ you always say. But, here is why I am writing. I was looking at one of your columns from around two years ago. I don’t know if you remember what you wrote, or whether you have the old columns...but you were living in Palm Springs, California, at the time and played Bingo in a place that was literally across the street from your apartment.

“You wrote that the Bingo session was conducted by an 89-year-old former showgirl and actress. The

funniest part was that you didn’t know whether the session was a concert for the showgirl with some Bingo thrown in, or a Bingo game with entertainment. But there was one thing you mentioned in the column that I found most interesting. You stated that the place where the Bingo game took place was in a hotel/restaurant complex that drew in visitors from all parts of the world.

“What fascinated me was the fact that you said that only once had someone come in to play Bingo who had never played before.

That person was from a small Asian country. I began to realize just how universal Bingo really is. To be honest, I have NEVER met anyone who has never played Bingo. Do you remember that woman who sang and called the games? — Silly Sally.”

Sally, I certainly do.

I miss those old times in Palm Springs. But, time moves on and situations change. During the past two years I have been living Las Vegas, playing the game we all love as often as I can. Alas, I am moving on again. My plan is to go back to my roots, to that small town in Indiana where I first played Bingo in the basement cafeteria of my brand-new grade school. As I have noted in earlier columns, they STILL play Bingo there. I hope to join them again soon.

Cruising into Spring Hi Guy, I am one of those lucky people who has been on several of the Bingo Tournament Cruises and was looking forward to going again this year. But, as you surely are aware of the terrible Covid-19 situation, my friend and I decided to cancel our trip this year and see how things looked in 2021.

Well, it appears like many other travelers had the same concerns we did because it was less than one month later that we saw the announcement that the entire 2020 cruise had been cancelled

due to pandemic worries and so many other people also cancelling.

Having never cancelled on such a vacation before, I was worried about how difficult that might be, even though I had been assured during previous trips that if there was a reason to cancel and it was done in a timely way, anyone could do so. Well, I am happy to report that getting a refund was very simple and uncomplicated and showed me yet another way in which the Bingo Tournament Cruise is well run and very professional.

With my cancellation complete, I pretty much put the cruise out of my mind because I assumed there would be no other Bingo cruise until next fall/winter. Then a Bingo buddy told me there was an ad in your paper for a spring Bingo cruise and I ran for a copy of the paper to see what she was talking about.

Well, I can happily say that I am sure that many people are thrilled that your paper was able to put together this special springtime Mexico Bingo cruise. The Bingo cruise is the only one I go on and

I was sad that it would take more than a year before I would have another chance to take it and play in the Bingo tournament. By having a spring cruise, you have given us players a chance to go much sooner than expected, at a very different time of the year, right after the end of winter, to a place many of us may not have visited before. How exciting!

I also think it was smart of the organizers to make this an added cruise, and that we can still sign up for the big tournament cruise in fall 2021. My friends and I have been taking about the two cruises a lot and I’m sure we will try and go on both.

Again, so sad that this year’s cruise was cancelled, but a big thank you for giving us two options for next year!

As I understand it, even before the pandemic, the Bingo Bugle had been in discussions with Carnival Cruise Line about the possibility of one day having a spring cruise.

When it looked like the 2020 trip was in jeopardy, apparently those discussions started up again and the Spring Fling Cruise was the result.

Will Ed’s Money Last?

I received an unusual question from an 82-year-old blackjack player, whom I’ll call Ed. He sent me a letter that said in summary: “I’ve been playing blackjack for 40 years and I enjoy the camaraderie of playing. I’m OK financially, and what I’d like to do is to set aside $75,000 to play blackjack more frequently (four days a week). How long will my money last?”

It turns out that Ed was married for 55 years and his spouse recently passed away after a long illness. To combat his loneliness, he started to play blackjack regularly at a local casino. Now he wants to play more frequently to stay “active and mentally alert.”

He mentioned in his letter that his local casino offers double-deck ($10 minimum) and six-deck ($5 minimum) games. Ed would like to play “about 3-hour sessions,” and he made it a point to tell me that he “knows his basic playing strategy cold.”

If Ed sticks to his plan, he will be playing a lot of blackjack every year: 62,400 hands to be exact.

This assumes that he plays 100 hands per hour for three hours on each visit, four days a week for 52 weeks.

In Ed’s local casino, the rules specify that the dealer hits soft 17 (h17) in all games, meaning the house edge that he will face is 0.40 percent in the $10 doubledeck game and 0.56 percent in the $5 minimum six-deck game. (Also, re-splitting of Aces allowed in six deck game.)

To answer Ed’s question, I calculated how much of his bankroll would be consumed if he played for 10 years, and also 15 years, and how much (if any) of his

OCTOBER 2020 bankroll would be left. The results may surprise you.

Ten Years Over the course of 10 years, Ed will play 624,000 hands of blackjack. If he plays solely the double-deck game with $10 minimum bets, here’s what will happen: --He will make over 6-million dollars in bets ($6,240,000 to be exact).

--His theoretical loss is $24,960 (based on the house edge of 0.40 percent).

--His actual loss with 95.4 percent probability will fall in the range of -$6,792 to -$43,128.

The above calculations show that Ed has more than enough bankroll to last him 10 years even if he lost $43,128, which is the lower end of the range. At age 92, he would still have at least $31,872 left of his original $75,000 bankroll.

And get this: the chance that Ed would lose more than $43,128 over 10 years is only 2.3 percent (or 1 in 43), giving him even more reassurance that his bankroll will last.

Fifteen Years Here are the results if Ed played the double-deck game for 15 years.

--He will make $9,360,000 worth of bets.

--His theoretical loss is $37,440 (based on the house edge of 0.40 percent).

--He has a 95.4 percent probability that his actual loss will fall in the range of -$15,188 to -$59,692.

Even after 15 years of playing, at age 97, Ed’s bankroll will have lasted, and, in fact, he would still probably have at least $15,308 left. (And he has only a slim 2.3 percent chance of losing more than $59,692.)

What if Ed decides to play the six-deck game with $5-minimum bets? The data shows that no matter which game Ed plays, as long as he sticks to the basic playing strategy and makes only minimum bets, his $75,000 bankroll is sufficient to allow him to play four days per week with three-hour playing sessions for 10 or 15 years.

I sent Ed the above information, and also suggested that he obtain a Player’s Card and always get rated when he plays. I don’t know the specifics of his local casino’s comping policy but, if it’s like most casinos, he will get comps worth about 25 percent of what the casino expects to win from him (and more than likely they will rate him as

losing one percent of everything he bets). This means Ed can expect to get roughly $23,400 worth of comps over 15 years of playing the double-deck game (or roughly half as much if he instead plays the six-deck game). The comps are a nice perk that will cover about 40 percent of his loss.

I also cautioned Ed to avoid using a betting progression because his average bet will increase, as will the standard deviation (or how much he will stray from his expected loss). This will result in a wider range for his actual loss and a greater worst-case loss over 10 (and 15) years. I also suggested that if he gets the urge to bet more than the minimum, he should do so only when the remaining undealt cards are richer in tens, picture cards, and aces. (I told him to play the double-deck game, watch the cards that were played, and if he didn’t see many of these cards played after the first two or three rounds after the shuffle, then and only then should he consider to modestly increase his bet.) Note: I also summarized for him the pros and cons of learning and using a simple card counting system, but at his age Ed decided for now that he wanted to stick with the basic strategy.

I wished Ed a long and healthy life and “good cards” at the blackjack table. He thanked me for the information and said he felt good knowing that his $75,000 bankroll will “probably last me for the rest of my life.”

That’s a lot of pumpkin pies, pumpkin lattes, and pumpkin everything else. Pumpkin pies did not exist when the colonists first settled in America. Their version involved cutting off the pumpkin tops, removing seeds, and filling the pumpkins with milk, spices, and honey before baking them in hot ashes. The Guinness Book of World Records states the largest pumpkin pie in the U.S.A was baked at the 2010 New Bremen, Ohio, Pumpkinfest. At twenty feet across with 440 sheets of dough crust, it was eventually cut into 3,000 pieces (someone counted them?) that were then eaten by hungry pie lovers. I’ve never cared for pumpkin pie and I hate Trick or Treat night and dressing up in ridiculous costumes. How ironic that Robert and I chose to be married in October, my least favorite month. We wanted to be married on Sweetest Day because we were sweet on each other. We still are and will celebrate 43 years of marriage on October 15th.

Where the concept of Sweetest Day came from is unknown, although some say it began

in Cleveland in 1921 when twelve candy makers delivered 20,000 boxes of candy to the underprivileged. Others say it is a devious plan created by the candy industry solely to increase their sales. Either way, it’s a win-win for candy lovers.

October 27 is Black Cat Day and in America a black cat crossing your path signals bad luck. In Ireland or Japan though, black cats that dart in front of you are lucky omens. In Germany, either bad or good luck will strike you depending on which direction the cat is walking; that is, whether left to right or vice versa. As someone who has to stop and think about which is my right or left hand, I would be totally confused trying to figure out if Lady Luck was with me, or if I should go hide under my bed.

And speaking of Lady Luck, she is still being mean to me gambling wise so I’ve been told I need to do two things. First, I should negotiate with the universe.

That means I should stop being so negative and stop saying I’m not lucky. What I put out to the universe will return to me because I am creating negative energy. I should change my attitude and let the universe know I deserve good things by being more positive.

Second, I should surround myself with good karma by doing random good deeds such as dropping coins in parking meters or sticking a dollar bill under a windshield wiper to surprise some unknown person. Afterwards, I should not expect payback and if the universe does notice and reward me, I should be thankful and express my gratitude.

Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.

Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received.

Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize.

Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month's contest.

Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing.

By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize.

The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.
