Wendy has been playing Bingo at St. Joseph Parish for over 30 years. If you ask her what is the best thing about St. Joe’s Bingo she’ll tell you straight away that it is spending time with her mom Lorraine. To us that sounds like a beautiful way to spend some time and her dad Bruce loves to see Lorraine having fun.

Wendy goes on to say that playing Bingo with many of the same people for those many years, her fellow players are like her second family. She sums it up by saying, “When it comes to Bingo, I’m not a newby”.

Well, that says a lot, being surrounded by family and friends gives you a great feeling.

Badgered at Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo, I have been going to Bingo many years and love to play. I live alone and go to be with my friends and make new friends. Now, sorry to say, I need to make a complaint, and hope you can give me an answer that will help.

I’ve never had to complain about anyone from Bingo, so this is hard for me. There is a woman that seems to criticize everybody and everything. I know everybody has a right to their opinions, but if they are hurtful, they should keep them to themselves. She talks all the time about this one lady. This other lady bothers nobody; she sits and plays her Bingo and minds her business. People like her and talk to her at her table during breaks.

She knows and sees what is going on but chooses to ignore it the best she can. She has told me it’s very hard for her to play because of this problem. No matter where she sits, when she goes, this lady points her out; and at other Bingo halls too, it’s not just this one.

Should she confront her? She has already told the lady that runs this hall all about it, and the woman told her to ignore it. I know it is making her upset. I told her to

Dear Jim, You certainly have hit the nail on the head regarding this woman’s options: Either she can continue to put up with this woman’s harassment and do her best to ignore it, or she can confront her and put an end to it.

Your letter does leave us with several unanswered questions, however: Do these women know each other? Did the woman do something that has resulted in this other woman disliking her? Is the critical woman disturbed in some way, choosing a total stranger to dislike and harass for no reason?

I can’t help but wonder if there is a deeper story to all this.

There is something you can do, too. Why not tell the lady that you would prefer not to listen to her criticisms and to keep her comments to herself. You could encourage others to do likewise.

If enough players join in, she will soon find herself isolated and may finally stop with the personal attacks.

Another option would be to come to the defense of the woman being harassed and very loudly scold the woman for her behavior and tell her to stop. If others support you, perhaps adding a bit of applause to your statements, it may get her to stop.

But ultimately, this is neither your problem, the Bingo manager’s, or mine. Extension for Debt Hardship Relief

If you owe benefit debts to the Department of Veterans Affairs, your hardship relief period, previously set to expire on Sept.

30, has been extended to Dec. 31.

Those types of debts can include those for disability compensation and non-service pension, and you might have been approved for either a waiver, a compromise or an extended repayment plan, as well as the hardship suspension of debt.

These debts impact half a million veterans and sometimes can be the result of a clerical error, veteran not being able to understand the paperwork or a letter being lost in the mail. Worse is when the error occurred when the veteran didn’t see the fine print and suddenly started receiving collection bills for debts.

By now you might have received a letter from the VA, if you have been making payments. It’s likely extension information for you.

While the talented de Armas has received praise for her performance, the film itself has received criticism for its excessive nudity. But, with biopics like these, it’s far too tricky to please everyone. Check it out for yourself when Blonde premieres Sept. 28. (Netflix) Hocus Pocus 2 (PG) — The sequel to the 1993 Halloween favorite Hocus Pocus premieres on Sept. 30, right on time for the Halloween season. The Sanderson sisters are back causing mayhem in Salem, as Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker all reprise their roles from the first film. The sisters are conjured

The heist doesn’t go exactly as planned, when LAPD officers swarm the bank to stop the brothers. Will and Danny make a narrow escape on an ambulance, unbeknownst to an EMT (Eiza Gonzalez) onboard treating a police officer. With four people now stuck in an ambulance on the run, it’s hard to tell who will make it out alive. Premiering Sept.

People Make the Game My chief reason for playing Bingo is the other players. I know it’s a gambling game, so I’m supposed to be in it for winning, but somehow the other players capture my attention more than the exchange of money. The playing of Bingo seems to cross most economic and social class lines, although I doubt if I’ve ever seen a mega-rich type playing, even in the high-stakes games. But maybe I wouldn’t necessarily recognize a mega-rich person as such?

There is a big difference between a game where there are hundreds of strangers crammed together and a small neighborhood game where people know each other. For one thing, the collective awareness of nearing the win is very different.

At a large, crowded place, you can feel the players holding their

NOVEMBER 2022 breaths as the win approaches.

Hearing someone call “Bingo” is almost a relief, even when you are not the winner, as the suspense is over.

At a neighborhood place, on the other hand, players can be heard exchanging news or recipes even at the most crucial moments. They keep up with each other and their Bingo buddies who are not present that day. Sometimes it is possible to observe romances flourish or die.

Robin is a very attractive young woman who showed up one day and caught the eye of all the men in the hall. She did not appear to be flirting and was attentive to her cards. The next time I saw her, however, she sat with Larry, who up to that time had always been by himself. It was hard to tell if she was his date, or not.

The next time I saw them, they were definitely together, and he was making decisions for her about what games to play and how many cards to buy. She seemed too independent for that treatment, but what do I know? They are both lucky players and tend to win frequently. Robin did not win that day. They were together again the next week, but I suspected trouble in paradise. Robin did not look happy. Larry was his usual take charge self.

Then Robin showed up with Tim, a young man she works with. Larry arrived by himself, sat nearby and glared. Robin seemed unaffected by his presence, laughed and

enjoyed herself. The couple became the center of a group of spirited young people. Larry scowled and seemed determined to make a big win to show how unaffected he was by Robin’s behavior. He bought ten special cards and was hard put to keep track of all the numbers. He worked to keep up while Robin laughed and daubed her one card.

I won the game and I was a little worried how Larry would react as he seemed to be so determined, but he congratulated me through clenched teeth. “Guess I’m just unlucky tonight,” he said, throwing a glance at the laughing group.

Robin and Tim were together several times, then Robin was alone again. Larry was alone, too, and they carefully sat several tables apart. “What can I say?”

Robin asked me. “I guess I’m just too competitive to be a partner.”

“Or you haven’t found the right one,” I observed. “There are plenty of fish in the sea.”

“Maybe I’ll give Larry another chance. He’s a good Bingo buddy if he just weren’t so bossy.”

And that is how it now stands.

Larry and Robin play Bingo together most of the time and the wins frequently come their way.

Tim is nowhere to be seen.

Getting to Know the Bingo Manager I hope you are well and, because this is a month of Thanksgiving, I am going to dwell on the reasons we should give thanks when it comes to Bingo. I have been joining you every month for more than twenty years in this publication.

During that time, I have gotten a lot of e-mail (reminder, I have a BRAND-NEW e-mail address: bingo@earthlink.net).

So, to the topic at hand. Over the years, I have heard a lot of complaints from people about their Bingo hall. Twenty years ago, the big complaints concerned TOO MUCH SMOKE in the halls. A decade ago, the biggest complaints centered around callers who mumbled. Now, the complaints are

NOVEMBER 2022 from people who find small things wrong, but don’t know what to do about their complaints.

So, here is my advice to you: Find out who the manager of your hall is. And, remember, there will be a big difference if you are playing in a fancy casino, a pay-for-play hall or at a non-profit hall. It is I good idea to get to know the manager BEFORE you have a problem.

In most halls, the manager has the final say, based, of course, on what the rules are for Bingo in that state. In large halls, the manager will likely have an office.

At the smaller non-profits, his or her office is likely at home. But no matter where you play, remember one thing, the manager has an enormous burden to bear. State rules are complex, and managers must “toe the line” when it comes to obeying and enforcing them to the letter. And, there is a huge amount of paperwork involved.

Also remember, if you have a complaint and are playing in a casino or major hall, it is likely that the manager has a couple of managers above them—so it may take a while to get things resolved.

The bottom line is that you are a PAYING CUSTOMER. You deserve a certain level of service.

And, you may need to consult with the manager to determine was you can expect from their hall.

I should point out, though, that in major cities, the problem of MUMBLING CALLERS does continue. I think one reason is that managers know that employees

are hard to find. But, if you are in a hall where you have to consult the TOTE BOARD to figure out what the caller said, it’s time to have a chat with the manager.

So, be thankful that we ARE able to play Bingo. Patronize the halls.

And, have fun. SHOUT when you win. We are not playing Bingo in a library. And, if you think Bingo should be a quiet, no-fun game… stay home!

Hi Lara, I probably should not admit this, but I always play Bingo during the winter holiday season—and usually play more! The reason is because so many people get busy that they skip Bingo, which means better odds of winning for me. All those beautiful empty chairs—my only fear is that the halls will cancel due to poor turn-out, or weather.

Another reason I like to go to Bingo during the holidays is that it gives me a break from all of the holiday hubbub. and restaurants. We have been here for a few months now and are still exploring the area and learning what else is around. One of the nice surprises was that we are near a couple of places that have Bingo. That is where I found the Bingo Bugle newspaper and your column. We have been to play Bingo a few times now (it has to be at least 30 years since either of us has played Bingo) and we are finding it very enjoyable. My wife won $25 this week and dinner was on her! I never thought when I retired that I would bump into Bingo and it would become part of my new “carefree lifestyle.” It is really fun!

Don’t Fear Video Poker I receive many communications from slot players who want to play video poker but don’t know how and don’t even know where to start. Many think the games might be too tough for them to learn. This is not true. Video poker is fun and the games are relatively easy to learn.

A big problem is that many players are indeed confused by the myriad of different video poker games in different denominations that they see on the casino floor.

But don’t panic, video poker is actually a simple game. Following is the general scheme:

TODAY’S

NOVEMBER 2022 The machine will randomly deal you five cards from a 52-card virtual deck (for the moment, let’s ignore Joker Poker, which is dealt from a 53-card deck). You get to hold as many cards from the initial five-card hand that you wish (you could hold one card, two, all five, or even none of them).

Once you decide which cards you want to hold, you hit the draw button and the computer will randomly deal you the appropriate replacement cards to replace the cards you discarded. That’s it, game over. If those cards show that you win, that’s good. If you lose? Well, then just try again!

How much you win (if anything) depends on the rank of your final five-card poker hand.

Usually, you will need at least a pair of jacks through aces to get your bet back (even money payoff).

If you have two pair, you’ll be paid more. Ditto for a three-of-a-kind, a flush, all the way to the highest hand, a royal flush. You must pay full coin/credits in order to get the biggest payout on the royal flush.

Royal flushes are somewhat rare, but they do happen, and they do give you a big monetary boost, so play maximum coins/credits.

The pay schedule for the winning hands are posted on the video screen for each game.

Enchant Winter Wonderland Enchant, the world’s largest Christmas-light maze and holiday market, will be on display at Resorts World this holiday season.

Enchant is usually held at sports stadiums; last year, for example, it took over Las Vegas Ballpark. This year, it will happen again at the Ballpark, but a second location will open at Resorts World, with a 10acre maze consisting of more than four million twinkling lights amongst trees, tunnels, animal sculptures, and other displays all leading to the 100-foot-tall Christmas tree.

There will also be an ice-skating rink, holiday shopping in Enchant Village, Santa and Mrs. Santa photo ops, wine tasting, and more.

Enchant on the Strip opens on November 19 and runs through New Year’s Day. Tickets start at $44 for adults and $23 for children 3-17, with senior and military discounts.

New Year’s Eve Entertainment In the first of any number of entertainment announcements leading up to New Year’s Eve, Bruno Mars will headline two shows at Dolby Live at Park MGM on Saturday Dec. 30 and Sunday the 31st. Park MGM is Mars’ preferred venue; he’s performed regularly in the theater since 2019.

Donny Osmond 2023 Donny Osmond has extended his solo residency in the Harrah’s Showroom through May. The performances include Osmond’s

Auto-rap-ography, a rap song accompanied by photos and videos from his six-decade career, a full Broadway production of his Disney hit from Mulan, I’ll Make A Man Out Of You, and an interactive segment where the audience can request any song he’s ever recorded. The new dates: January 24-28, and 31; February 1-4, 14-18, 21-25, and 28; March 1-4, 7-11, 21-25, 28-31; April 1, 4-8; and May 2-6, 9-13, 1620, 23-27.

Food Hall Coming to Aria MGM Resorts is transforming the shuttered buffet on the second level of Aria into a food hall.

Proper Eats will open with 12 outlets in the 24,000-square-foot space. The Las Vegas ReviewJournal describes four of the counters: Soul Bird for Korean fried chicken, its first location outside London; Wexler’s (Jewish) Deli, its first location outside of southern California; Egghead from Tao Group for breakfasts; and Temaki for sustainably caught seafood and made-to-order sushi. It also lists the other foods: “breakfast doughnuts, salads and other healthy foods, pizza, burgers, ramen, and Mediterranean.” Food halls are the new buffets; when Proper Eats opens in December, it will be the fourth on the Strip, along with Block 16 at the Cosmo, Eataly at Park MGM, and Famous Food Street Eats at Resorts World.

I used to be a heavy gambler, but now I just make mental bets. That’s how I lost my mind. – Comedian, Steve Allen The older I get, the faster time flies. As in that song Sunrise, Sunset…swiftly fly the years, one season following another, laden with happiness and tears. That’s exactly how life is supposed to be, a mixture of joy and tears. Since it’s November and Thanksgiving time, I now offer my annual thanks to my loyal readers. I’ve met a few in Vegas and other places and it’s always special to talk with them. Also, a special shout out to my number one fans, Chris and Caroline; Donna, Arnold, Peggy, and Sandy, and all others who encourage this feisty old lady to keep on writing. Lastly, thank you, Bingo Bugle, for allowing me to write this column for almost twenty years. Believe me, the pleasure has been all mine. That being said, it is now time to share my latest losing adventures. Did I hear you say, oh great, more whining?

Exactly.

First, our annual trip with the Popes, to Vegas. No, not THE POPE; he lives in Rome and speaks Italian. Whereas, THE POPES, live near us and speak southern Ohioan. First up was Laughlin, southeast of Vegas and site of our first financial butt kicking. We stayed at the Aquarius where the rooms and casino are

beautiful. However, the video poker and slot gods were not kind to any of us. We played and lost for three straight days, leaving there with our spirits dampened. Whine, whine.

Next, we checked into The D in downtown Vegas where we hoped to change our luck. Nice room, but the casino as well as Fremont Street itself is extremely noisy.

Knowing this, I came prepared with ear plugs and did I mention a heavy sweater? It was hot as Hades everywhere but where I wanted to play. The machines there would give you frostbite in more ways than one. Whine, whine.

As for bingo, we played at the Plaza, oh yes, we certainly did.

Now, guess who was the only loser of our little group? Yep, yours truly. Our friends did pretty well and bingoed several times as did my hubby. I sat there and seethed for the most part as I repeatedly got set, but never managed to holler bingo. My honey shared his win money with me so that cooled my win envy; but, why do the bingo gods keep denying me any satisfaction? Whine, whine.

We flew home with sad faces and empty pockets, but I’m still not done with my whining. Robert and I recently drove to Windsor Casino across from Detroit. We love that nonsmoking casino where all the rooms are beautiful. This time at the border crossing, Robert was selected for a random covid test; given a test kit; and told to follow the directions after we checked into our hotel room. I’m a retired teacher and can usually follow directions but figuring out what to do with that kit was like first graders trying to decipher the Dead Sea Scrolls. And after all that, we came home losers, AGAIN. Could you pass me some cheese to go with my whine, please? Until next month may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.

Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received.

Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize.

Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month’s contest.

Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing.

By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes.

Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize.

The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.

Please, don’t call the Bingo Bugle office to find out who the winner is, we won’t tell you. And, if it is you, you will be disqualified.
