Evelyn Fayne was reading the April Bingo Bugle from cover to cover like she does every month when she got to page 11 to check the trivia answers and was surprised to see her name as April’s Sweepstakes winner. Evelyn has been playing bingo since the late 1970’s when she would go with her mother Ethel and that was all it took. She fell in love with Bingo! Evelyn plays weekly sometimes at St Bernadette also at Elk’s 46. She likes playing the progressive jackpot games and says if she wins, she just might use those winnings to go on the Bingo Bugle Cruise. People watching is one of her favorite things to do at the bingo hall, the different hats, clothing as well as the lucky mementoes people have around them bring a smile to her face. Evelyn’s words of wisdom “If you didn’t win today there’s always tomorrow!“
St. Bernadette, 8200 West Denver Avenue in Milwaukee, has a long tradition of hosting bingo. In fact, they were issued one of the first 200 licenses
in the State of Wisconsin. First run as a fundraiser for St. Bernadette School, the parish took over running bingo after our school merged with St. Catherine of Alexandria and Our Lady of Good Hope’s schools. Since then, the money raised has helped St. Bernadette Parish with extraordinary expenses, including improvements and repairs to their building
and HVAC systems, parking lot repairs, roof repairs, and new tables in the parish hall. Their bingo volunteers and the players have made a difference at their parish, and they are grateful for each and every one of them!
On most Sundays of the year (other than holiday weekends), St. Bernadette offers bingo players two bingo sessions with
prizes totaling $1,250 for each session, as well as a progressive bingo session. The doors open at 3:30pm, and the first ball is called at 5:00pm. It’s a good idea to arrive early to take advantage of the variety of concessions offered for sale. A typical menu includes hot dogs, burgers, and brats, and we will sometimes offer a special menu item which can vary. Desserts and non-alcoholic beverages are also available for purchase. While you are waiting for the games to begin, you can participate in their money raffle, purchase pull tabs, and get to know the great community of players and volunteers.
Sunday nights at St. Bernadette are fun-filled evenings for everyone. Other parish events and activities include faithbased book reads, bible study, a holiday fair, rummage sale, health classes and fish fries. Check out our website at www.nwmcp.org for Mass times and other events. They look forward to seeing you soon.

More Dough for Bingo!
Dear Aunt Bingo,
Last evening, I was arriving to Bingo with my friends and began to see that a lot of cars pulling into the parking lot had only one occupant: the driver.
My friends went on ahead while I stayed in the parking lot to see how many more cars would drive in with just one passenger. I was startled to see that more than half of the cars arrived that way.
When I went inside the hall, there were very few people sitting and playing Bingo alone. Almost everyone was sitting with one or more Bingo buddies, which meant
that although these people played Bingo together, it didn’t occur to them to travel to Bingo together as well.
This is a terrible waste of fuel and has a bad impact on the environment. Would you please ask your readers to consider carpooling with their Bingo buddies in the future? It will save them money, and also help the planet. —California Tree Girl, via e-mail
Dear Tree Girl,
I’m glad you wrote in on this subject, and I am more than happy to share your concerns with readers. With gasoline costing more than ever, it is really a wise fiscal move for players to think about carpooling to Bingo—not to mention to work, shopping, or any other outing that requires travel by car.
Online, you can find a calculator that shows how much money you save by traveling with others instead of alone when motoring around town at https://www. rideshare.com/easy-commute/ commuter-savings-calculator/. Depending on distance, you could save $1,000 or more per year in gas and auto maintenance by carpooling. Just imagine all the extra Bingo you could be playing with that spare cash! —Aunt Bingo
Small Punishments for Scammers
What always stands out, at least to me, are the low penalties for the criminals who steal from veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The number of scams seems to grow, and one wonders if it’s because thieves don’t perceive there to be much punishment if they should be caught.
An example: A veteran threatened to blow up a VA medical facility. He verbally told the crisis line and even identified the person he specifically wanted to kill and when. He was found and arrested for making threats and even made additional threats after the arrest. Now, he hasn’t gone to court yet, but the evidence is pretty strong. Why, one wonders, would he only be in line for five short years in the slammer? Yes, there could be a hefty fine, but it’s the time behind bars that would keep society safe.
Another example: There was the VA employee who stole prescription drugs that were mailed to VA patients. He knew
where they were going, of course, since the drugs were shipped from the VA pharmacy and he therefore had the addresses. He and his pals would break into the mailboxes to steal the drugs, which he would sell for big profits. I think about cancer patients when I learn of something like this, cancer patients who need their drugs on time, not to mention the likely pain medications. The main thief in this scam only received a sentence of 42 months in prison; his scammer pals got sentences of 12 and 35 months. Not long enough, not nearly long enough.
Then there was the guy who convinced everyone that he was blind and therefore 100% disabled and needed some benefits. Turned out he had both a drivers license and a gun carry permit and could see well enough for those activities. Not so blind after all, but his punishment was a few years of probation and some cash restitution.
So where is the deterrence to thieves and scammers when the punishment is so light?
PICKS OF THE MONTH
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (PG-13) — Is it the end of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman? In December 2023, Momoa told Entertainment Tonight that if the audience loves the sequel, “there’s a possibility” of a third film getting greenlit. But after negative reviews and the film only making $434 million against a budget of $215 million, it doesn’t look too good. In the sequel, Momoa stars as Arthur Curry four years after the events of the first movie. Now a married family man, Arthur splits his life between the land and sea, while Black Manta still seeks revenge in the shadows. When he learns of Manta’s plans, Arthur breaks Orm, his half-brother, out of prison to join him in the fight against Manta. Amber Heard, Yahya AbdulMateen II and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles from the first film. Out now. (Max)
We Were the Lucky Ones (TVMA) — After starring in the 2022 film Bullet Train together, Joey King and Logan Lerman reunite to lead this new eight-episode series based on the historical novel written by Georgia Hunter. King and Lerman respectively portray Halina and Addy Kurc, two siblings in a Jewish family of seven who live in Poland at the start of World War II. The large family inevitably gets separated as the war carries on, taking them
far away from home and spreading them across continents. Amid the tragic circumstances they’re forced to endure, the Kurc family is determined to keep their resilience and reunite with each other once the war ends. (Hulu)
Road House (R) — Almost 35 years after the 1989 film Road House starring Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliot released, a reimagining starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor has made its way to streaming. Gyllenhaal takes on the lead role as Dalton, a former UFC fighter who gets hired to work as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys. The joint attracts a great number of rowdy customers, but none are a match for Dalton’s fists. However, when news of Dalton’s immaculate butt-kicking hits the ears of Ben Brandt (Billy Magnussen), the heir of a criminal empire, Ben will stop at nothing to shut Dalton and the roadhouse down. For anyone who loves nonstop action, this one’s for you! Out now. (Prime Video)

Best Birthday Ever
May is my birthday month and I am very happy with it. Lilacs, my favorite flower, are always in bloom for my birthday as are dogwood and many others. I did not expect or want anything different for my birthday this year. A meal out and a whole day of Bingo. That’s enough for me.
First, we went to breakfast and I had my favorite: one blueberry pancake, one egg and one slice of bacon. Cliff and Rod were with us and we were a happy group, finding fun in everything. Then we were off to Bingo.
near parking at our favorite Bingo place and I noticed a sign reading, “Spectacular Events Today.” That was good news to me. I was ready to have some fun.
The very first game was a “spectacular” as after the winner was called, a second chance was announced for a second winner. This could be a very exciting day. The third game was another “spectacular,” It was a double Bingo, but a first Bingo was paid half the winnings, while the second Bingo got the full amount. I was on for that game, so it got super exciting.
During the game before intermission, Rod got so excited he got hiccups and we were all nearly hysterical with laughter. Someone else won and his hiccups promptly stopped, and we were still in a great mood.
After intermission Kate was hot.
happy.
“It’s my birthday,” I said, loud enough for many people to hear. “It’s time I won one,” then giggled for my rhyming phrase. But no more wins came our way but we still went away happy, knowing I’d had about the best birthday ever. We went on to dinner and everyone had a gift for me! Cliff had gotten me a book I’d been wanting—a new Harlen Coben novel. His novels are so complicated I am tempted to write things down in a notebook!
Kate gave me gift certificate for the local movie theater, which I will treasure and use wisely.
Rod came last and he presented me with a jeweler’s black velvet box that I was reluctant to open so I could prolong the surprise. But they all told me to “open it, open it!” so I did—discovering the most beautiful bracelet I had ever seen. It was studded with little rubies and diamonds and it slipped on my arm like it had been made exactly for me.
A meal out and a whole day of Bingo.
We were lucky enough to find
She won the first game, which got us really going and was on for the second. Then Cliff won an on-theway game, which made us really
“It’s so beautiful, I can’t thank you enough! But how did you know it’s exactly what I’ve been wanting?”
He put his arm around my shoulders, gave me a peck on the cheek and said, “I guess I know my girl. Happy, happy birthday.”

Bye-Bye Biddies?
Here I am, a guy in his late 70s, the product of great parents, Catholic schools, wonderful nuns and adults who treated me with kindness. I bring this up because, until recently, I always had a genuine respect for older women— you know, “grandmother types”— women in the mold of Jane Darwell, the actress who played Ma Joad in The Grapes of Wrath
Alas, the more I go to my local Bingo here in Southern Indiana, the more my attitude is changing. I have begun to think of many of these matrons in another light— and as far as I am concerned many are simply “biddies.” And, I DO mean that in the worst possible way. Many have become loud, money-hungry, back-stabbing resentful players. As far as I am concerned, they represent everything that Bingo ISN’T.
The hall where I play at on Fridays and Sundays is the same hall I played at with my Grandmother when I was ten years old (back then kids could actually play along with adults). It was exciting—from day one I was hooked and I still am. But these lovely memories of my kind and gracious grandmother have been marred by a host of negative experiences playing with this new crop of Bingo matrons. And, it is very sad.
I never anticipated the way many of these older women would act, or
the crafty ways they have wrangled themselves into front row seats; demanding that, even though the caller always puts the next ball to be announced in view of a small camera so we can all see it, that they also take the extra step of holding it up so a select few can see the color of the ball before it is shared with the rest of us. They shout at the caller, complain, groan and act as though only THEY matter.
Now, to the defense of these women—many of them have probably led lousy lives—with abusive husbands and children who never visit. They endured hardships...including childbirth. But enduring a tough life is not enough of a reason to assume, when it comes to Bingo, they are beyond being courteous.
And, from the letters I have received over the years I have learned that this problem is not just in MY Bingo hall…it is nationwide. So, bless the many fine, wonderful
“grandmother types” that play Bingo, abide by the rules and love the game. Treat them with the respect they so richly deserve. But the “biddies”? Tell them to enjoy the game, stop all the needless griping—or get lost! Life is too short to act like that, and spoil everyone else’s time at Bingo!
And, if I have offended anyone this month? I urge you to ask yourself if YOU are the one acting like this at Bingo, or whether “biddies” are spoiling the fun at your favorite hall.
(Editor’s Note: Personally, I have found th at people of all ages can be “biddies” at Bingo. Though age may certainly lead some individuals to assume they’ve earned the right to be disruptive, I’ve seen younger women get horrifyingly out of hand at Bingo. It falls upon all of us, both players and managers, to guide “biddies” of all ages and genders toward an understanding that their behavior will not be tolerated.)

Unfair fit?
Dear Guy, I play Bingo with three friends pretty much every Thursday night. We like to talk and crack jokes and bust on each other, because it makes it more fun for us than just sitting there playing Bingo. But there’s a group of these women players there that hate us. They want us to clam up and sit there like zombies marking our Bingo cards and not say a single word. They’ve told us to “shut up” and I think they may even have complained about us to the people that run the Bingo. We sit way off in the corner and nobody else seems to mind us, but this one group has a fit the minute we walk into the hall. Do you think this is fair?
—Bernie
G., Illinois
Dear Bernie,
When it comes to Bingo, different people have different idea about what constitutes appropriate hall behavior. Some of them want the hall so quiet that you can hear an ant sneeze. Others like to be social and talk with friends while they play. As a result, there often will be clashes between the different groups.
What I tell people is that it is perfectly fine to have fun and socialize at Bingo no matter what your definition of that may be. But you also have to keep in mind that you are in a room full of people, and you must take others’ feelings into consideration. Are you guys being too loud? Are you cracking jokes or talking at the same time a ball is being called? If you are, then I am afraid that you are asking for trouble—and that trouble will certainly come in the shape of people scolding you and lodging complaints about you to the folks in charge.
* “Collect small bits of soap into a cup or jar. When you have several, add a tablespoon or two of water to the cup to soften the soap pieces. When they are moderately soft, pour out the contents on a washcloth, fold it over and press into a bar shape with your hands. Peel away the cloth to reveal what should be a reasonably solid new bar of soap.” — C.T. in Pennsylvania
On the other hand, if you are being thoughtful to other players and attentive to the game, and these people who are complaining about you are simply grouches who have singled you out just to be difficult, then you have every right to complain about THEM to the manager and ask that they be told to get off your back. —Guy BINGO BINGO BINGO BINGO BINGO
* Save power with this tip: Use cold water to wash towels and jeans. Then hang them to dry — preferably outside, but on an inside line is OK, too. When they are mostly dry, pop them in the dryer on air dry to fluff up. Towels and jeans take the longest to dry in the clothes dryer, and use a lot of electricity.
* Take soap scum right off your shower curtain — spray with vinegar and water mixture, then throw it in the washer. Hang it right back up, and those mildew stains are gone!
* “When canning or doing another job, always do the thing you hate first, then the rest will be easier.” — L.D.W. in Illinois

VP Playing Options
Many video poker players think they know their playing strategy cold. However, where they miss the boat is not recognizing all the playing options in a hand before they decide which cards to hold. For example, suppose you are playing 9/6 Jacks or Better and are dealt the following hand. Which cards would you hold?
When players initially see this hand pop up on their screen, they will invariably focus on the three high cards (A-K-J). The correct hold when you have three unsuited high cards that includes an Ace is to drop the Ace and hold the other two unsuited cards (i.e., hold the unsuited J-K with a 2.42 EV). However, look closely at the hand again because there is a better hold that is not so obvious: the three-card straight flush A-2-5 (2.69 EV).
The above hand is an example of how players tend to focus only on the high cards in their hand. They immediately make a decision on which high cards to hold and then hit the draw button. In addition, many players view the Ace as a high card only, when, in fact, it could be used as a low card (and part of an Ace low, three-card straight flush).
Here are two tips that could help you avoid the costly mistake of not recognizing all the options in your hand.
What's News in Nevada . . .
All Coin Machines at Slots A Fun
To go with the new table games, the refurbished Slots A Fun next to (and owned by) Circus Circus has installed upwards of 75 vintage token-operated slots in 25-cent, $1, and $5 denominations. All the coin machines from Circus Circus were relocated to Slots A Fun and a few dozen more were bought from Vegas vendors to fill out the floor. In addition, the small joint is offering $5 table minimums and $2 shrimp cocktails
Tortazo Coming to Caesars Caesars Entertainment announced that Rick Bayless, Michelin-starred celebrity chef, author, and longtime host of the food show on PBS, Mexico: One Plate at a Time, will open “his acclaimed restaurant” Tortazo at Caesars Palace. Tortazo has two locations in Manhattan and one in Chicago and is considered fast-casual, with prices for tortas, tacos, quesadillas, and tlayudas ranging from $13 to $18 (could be higher in Vegas). The Chicago restaurant serves three meals, New York brunch and dinner. Tortazo is scheduled to open in late summer and will be Bayless’ first restaurant in Vegas.
Peppermill Honored
Most players will recognize two playing options; the suited J-K of hearts (i.e., two-card royal flush) and the consecutive three-card straight flush 8-9-10 (spades). Of the two options, the three-card straight flush (8-9-10) has a higher expected value (3.00 ER) than the two suited high cards (2.98 ER). It’s a close call, but holding the suited 8-9-10 is slightly better than holding the suited J-K. Nevertheless, if you look closely at the hand there is an even better option that most players miss. That’s holding the four card-straight 8-9-10-J. The EV for the latter is 3.72, making this the preferred hold of the three options.
Here’s another example (Jacks or Better). Which cards would you hold?
1) When you initially look at the cards in your hand and hit the hold buttons under the cards that you believe are the best playing option, train yourself to look at the hand one more time to be sure you haven’t missed another playing option.
2) Practice playing video poker at home on your computer, using a video poker training software. The program will alert you when you make an incorrect play (that includes “missing” a playing option). This type of training will help you recognize all the playing options in each hand. (The two software programs that I recommend are Video Poker for Winners, and Optimum Video Poker.)
Lastly, if you slow down your play and, in addition, take frequent breaks (at least stand and stretch once an hour), this will help keep your mind fresh and focused on recognizing all the playing options in every hand.

Meanwhile, the New York Post is reporting that the Eagles “have agreed to a residency at Sphere” after they finish their “Long Goodbye” tour on June 15 in the Netherlands. Million Dollar Jackpot at Palazzo

Summerlin Movie Studio
Approved
The iconic and beloved Peppermill Restaurant and Fireside Lounge on the north Strip was one of six restaurants singled out last week by the James Beard Foundation for an America’s Classics Award. The Foundation cited the Peppermill’s “welcoming atmosphere” and the long-time waitresses who know customers’ names. Indeed, the general manager started as a waitress in her teens and has been there for nearly 50 years (her son is the executive chef).
Lady Gaga Returns
Lady Gaga will return to Dolby
Yesterday, the Clark County Commission approved an $1.8 billion (!) movie studio and mixeduse development in Summerlin. The joint venture, between Howard Hughes Holdings (the landlord) and Sony Entertainment (the Hollywood connection), will be called Summerlin Production Studios and located on Town Center Drive just off the 215 Beltway. Encompassing ten buildings with approximately 500,000 square feet, 100,000 of which will be retail, restaurants, and offices. No timeline has been divulged at press time and this is the first step in a long process, but the end result will be: movie stars all over the west valley.

Pricey Purses
When your mother asks if you want a piece of advice, it doesn’t’ matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway. —
Erma Bombeck
It’s the merry month of May and time to look forward to the sultry days of summer; unless you’re like me and hate to sweat. Daylight savings time is allowing an extra hour of daylight in the evening so we’re no longer driving to bingo in the dark and cold. Recently, my friends and I attended a Purse Bingo for a charity event. I thought my luck might change since I was not playing for money, but for something in which I could hide any future winnings from my loving, but nosy, husband who would never look in a purse. Every female should have a stash of hidden cash for whatever, no questions asked. It was a wonderful bingo for a modest amount of money and for a worthy charity, the music program at a local school district. Dinner was included as well as an auction for various gift certificates which went to the highest bidder on each item. Now, full disclosure, I am not a big purse carrying kind of gal, and most of the bingo prize purses were fairly large. Included in the group were Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, and other pricy purses retailing from $250 to over $700. I had my eye on a small beige crossbody bag that eventually went to another lucky player, so what else is new? I’ve
adjusted to my long losing streaks somewhat, but I still bemoan the loss of that little cutie that cost way too much for what amounted to a designer’s name on a bag to carry essentials. So, the question is why do these purses carry such exorbitant price tags?
The oldest known surviving handbag is inlaid with gold and silver and was made in Iraq around 1300 A.D. From there, we skip to the 16th century when historical evidence shows that both sexes carried purses attached to their belts. In the next century handbags became a status symbol for wealthy women who commissioned skilled craftsmen to make purses and thus display their social status.
During the next century mass production of purses as we know them began and they became affordable to most women. In the 1900s iconic designers came forward to once again fulfill the desire from affluential women to flaunt their standings in polite society and this caused their prices to skyrocket. Louis Vuitton, renowned for monogrammed canvas bags, was founded in 1854. Fast forward to 1955 when Chanel introduced the quilted leather handbag with a chain strap; followed in 1960 by those made by Valentino. FYI, the best known and most coveted luxury handbags in the world are made by Hermes. The company released the Kelly, named after Princess Grace Kelly in the 1950s. However, by far the most expensive designer handbag currently available is the Hermes Birkin bag, and it can be yours for a mere $220,000. To go cheaper, the brass and gold Balenciaga Hourglass Metal Handbag, extra small, can be purchased for the bargain price of $22,800. Sound good? Buy two and send me one. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. Don’t forget to take all the moms in your life to bingo on May 24th, Mother’s Day.
