She would like to see Debra win the Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes. That is a kind and generous wish. If you play Bingo in the Milwaukee area you just may run into LaSonia, she plays about once a week. She plays at Greendale American Legion Post 416 at 6351 W. Grange Ave for Sunday 6 PM or Tueaday 9:45 AM Bingo. Other places on her list include United Seniors and Elks Lodge #46. Our Sweepstakes Winner is a great example of “Beginner’s Luck”. The first time she picked up the Bingo Bugle and filled out the entry blank for the Sweepstakes, she won. “I’m going to keep reading the Bingo Bugle”, she said. We asked her if she had anything to tell her fellow Bingo players, “Come with an open mind and you just might win”. That sounds like good advice to us and we’re glad to pass it along. We talked to volunteers Cliff Stark and Rolando Flores to catch up on anything new at Legion Post #416. First off, Rolando and Cliff are always busy keeping the Post and their Bingo operation humming along smoothly. Rolando is even one of thier Bingo callers.

They said that in comparison to some other Bingo Halls that they are a smaller operation, “But we try to do something special for our Bingo Players”, that’s how Cliff Stark summed up their Bingo Philosophy. Rolando explained that, “About 4 times a year we have a Gas Card Raffle for our Bingo Players. It’s a great deal for the players and the proceeds go to Veterans Needs and our Scholarship Fund. So it really is a ‘Win - Win’ proposition.” American Legion Post 416 has three Scholarship oportunities, 2 are open to Post member families and one for any Veteran family member. What a great way to help the families of Veterans who have given so much to our country. That’s what this Legion Post is all about. If you want to have a great time playing Bingo and helping out Veteran

causes in the meantime, then Legion Post #416 in Greenfield is the place for you. The Post also takes an active role in Badger Boys /Girls Summer Camp. This week long opportunity for 150 students to learn about government and civics. Badger Boys/Girls gives them hands-on experience so they can learn by doing. They function on city, county and state levels. The Post takes this very seriously, this is a good way to instill a sense of patriotism and love for America through knowledge of how our government works. so that when the next ball finally is called, it is not always easy to hear. What can a player do to get the callers to speed up? —Bingo Napper, via e-mail

A Need for Speed Dear Aunt Bingo, I have noticed that the caller calls too fast for “paper” players. Machine players pay an extra $5 per six-pack for using the machine instead of the paper/dauber method. Paper players are at a disadvantage. They cannot keep up with the caller. Is there a set speed callers must use? Some call at 17 seconds, some 10 seconds. H o w e v e r, s o m e callers don’t wait for the “beep” to signal the time for the next number to be called. They might call in two or three seconds, or irregular sequences, making it difficult if not impossible to keep up. I, and others, have lost our Bingo because of this violation. To complain is useless— management claims that “the machine is set” and no change is allowed. Please advise. Thanks for your help. Love your column. —McC., via e-mail

Dear McC and Napper, Taking a page from the children’s story Goldilocks and the Three Bears, one thing I have learned over the years from writing this column is that some players feel that callers call the numbers too fast, others insist that the callers are too slow, while the rest feel the calling is juuuuuuust right. Typically, there is one reason why Bingo halls choose the particular pace they use for calling numbers: It’s the length of time the majority of players prefer. If they hear from multiple players that the pace between calls is too fast or too slow, they adjust accordingly. This is one of the reasons why it is so great that Bingo blower machines have a timer to help keep the caller on track: There is no guessing involved; every pause between calls is the same length as the one b e f o r e and the one after. And to the best of my knowledge, t h e s e timers are adjustable to the pace the majority of players say they are most comfortable with. Certainly, the introduction of handheld electronic Bingo units has changed things, but their use shouldn’t create a handicap to paper players—unless the hall manager is purposely trying to demonstrate the speed of the electronic devices and encourage more people to use them. If that’s the case, he or she is going about it the wrong way. As long as there are new players and seasoned players, social players and serious players, single-pack players and multi-pack players, not to mention newer and faster technology, it is going to be impossible for a caller to meet the needs and speeds of every player in a Bingo hall. —Aunt Bingo

Dear Aunt Bingo, The callers at several of the Bingo halls I go to insist upon calling the numbers too slowly. They don’t get it that players get bored and restless if they have to sit too long between numbers. When that happens, people begin to talk and laugh and make noise,

Contaminated Drinking Water at U.S. Bases We’ve known for years about the dry-cleaning chemicals and leaking fuel tanks contaminating the water at Camp Lejeune. It went on for decades (1953-1987) with multiple generations being affected before the Department of Veterans Affairs finally allowed claims for disability from all the illnesses caused by the water. But Lejeune isn’t the only one. Last year, word started surfacing about chemicals in the water at the Pease Air Base. Health officials called for people to sign up in a health study by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Then there’s Fort Ord. It was put on the Superfund’s National Priorities List in 1990 due to leaking petroleum tanks underground. Now there’s news from Hawaii,

Heavy Lifting Leads to Wins Our friend Deb broke her foot in a home accident. She was reaching into a high closet shelf, dislodged a boom box and it fell directly onto her foot, breaking a bone. She had been in a bit of a foul mood ever since, alternately blaming herself for being so dumb, and cursing the fates for not protecting her. Our solution to her bad humor was to take her to Bingo whenever possible. Last week she particularly wanted to go to the old Skating Club where, it seems, she has phenomenal good luck. When we arrived, I realized the Bingo game was upstairs while ice-skating went on down below. There is no way Deb could easily or safely climb stairs, so we sat pondering what to do. The workers suggested we get part of the

MAY 2022 waiting hockey team to lift her, in her chair, safely up the small flight of stairs to the second floor. It was quickly accomplished by three strong young men. “Well, that worked out okay,” said Kate while Deb giggled. Deb was certainly right about that place being lucky for her. First, there was a session of Speed Bingo in which everyone places their cash bets into a basket. Deb was fast and focused and won a game. “I just love winning money by the basketful,” she said. Her winnings were a modest stack of one-dollar bills and many coins. After a short break during which several workers brought refreshments to Deb, we swung into our regular game. Again, Deb was a winner. She nailed a Texas blackout for $350. She was giddy by this time and said she would dance a jig or kick her heels up if she weren’t hobbled. Players around us became interested in Deb’s fortunes and misfortunes and she shared a possibly enhanced story of how her foot came to be broken to the amusement of nearby players. During intermission, Deb’s hockey guys came up to see how she was doing. She referred to them as her “foot soldiers” much to everyone’s merriment. “I want to take you out for a treat after the game,” she told them while they protested it was unnecessary. “But I insist, you brought me such good luck,” she said. It seems their practice session

and our Bingo session ended at the same time so they said they would return to carry her downstairs. Kate won a game during the second half, so we were all in a good mood when the foot soldiers reappeared. It seemed going down the stairs was a fair bit harder than going up, but they easily coped. We all went out for burgers and fries and happily toasted Deb’s winnings with sodas.

The Transformation of the Bingo Hall I hope you are well. I have spent some of the last two weeks looking over old e-mail from people, such as yourself, who reached out to me at: bobonbingo@ earthlink.net. One of those e-mails, from JDS, who writes from Washington, Pennsylvania, notes that he: “Once heard that one of the independent Bingo halls in Las Vegas nearly dropped Bingo. Originally, there were only three sessions a night at the hall. It had no other choice. It shared an area with the casino’s Sports & Race Book and had to play ‘musical

chairs’ with that activity.” JDS continues: “Then, in 2002 an addition was made to the casino and a full-sized Bingo room was added. Soon, Bingo was being called from morning until night. I read, though, that the hall has reduced its Bingo games to only four a day, 11am, 1pm, 7pm and 9pm. On weekends, though, two more sessions are added. Bob, can you update this story for us?” Thanks, JDS, well, the closing of Bingo halls and the cutbacks on games is symptomatic of what is happening to Bingo in some areas. Even in the United Kingdom, where Bingo has been an important part of life for many since the Second World War, some halls have closed. One example is the venerable Mecca Bingo Hall in London. Before its recent closing, it was a place of good times, heckling and a lot of kibitzing between players. Sounds like my kind of place.

were converted to Bingo houses. Here in the States, a huge and very popular Bingo venue in Lafayette, Louisiana, held on as long as it could. The hall was called Metro Bingo. For a long time, it was a staple just off Interstate 49 in that city. When the hall closed just before Christmas a couple of years ago, there were rumors that it would be replaced…eventually. I have been told that the new venue for the game we all love best has opened. The owners are planning major renovations to the old facility. So, Bingo IS alive and well in most places, but in some— even Las Vegas—we are seeing cutbacks. In Lafayette, Louisiana, it was “saved, in the nick of time.” There is a temptation to say: “Well, that’s the way it goes. You win some, you lose some.” But, if you really love Bingo, you can’t share in that attitude. It is the customers who keep Bingo alive. And, the customers are US. Centers of Attention Hi Guy, Every so often I will see you discussing Bingo divas—lady Bingo players who enjoy getting attention at Bingo centers. I wanted to write in to let you know that diva behavior is not limited to women. There are plenty of male “divos” to be found at Bingo, too. My experience with Bingo divos is that they differ from divas in how they attract attention. A divo at one Bingo I go to is very loud—cracking jokes all the time then laughing loudly at his own jokes. He thinks he is the life of the party and is chummy with the Bingo workers. (To be honest, the Bingo workers do seem to encourage his antics.) Another Bingo divo I have seen around is a man who is always angry about something—the price of Bingo paper, complaining about the chairs or the sound system, etc., etc.—and does his griping very loudly so that everyone stops

Cash Out to Cash In Have you ever talked with a friend on the telephone and gotten the feeling that something is wrong with them, but they aren’t telling you? This happened to me some time ago. I finally asked my friend point blank, “Is something wrong?” That’s when he opened up and told me what happened when he’d played video poker recently. Before I get into Al’s story (not his real name), let me give you some background. Al is a recreational casino player, who visits casinos about 2-3 times per month. He used to play only slots until he asked me about a year ago to teach him how to be a skillful video poker player, which I did. From that day forward, he played only video poker on his casino trips. Al is a successful businessman, travels a lot, and likes to play dollar-denomination, single-line video poker games for fun and relaxation (he only plays games where he knows the playing strategy well and the Expected Value of the game is greater than 99 percent). Now, let me get back to Al’s story. I’ll summarize what he told me: I was playing a dollardenomination 8/5 Bonus Poker game. I had loaded the machine with $200 and was playing an 8/5 Bonus Poker progressive machine. I was holding my own when “it” happened. Over the course of the next half hour, I won virtually every hand. My heart was racing, and I remember that my last four-of-akind hand was four queens, and I paused for a second and noticed I’d racked up $2,250 in credits. I’d had never won this much money so quickly in a casino in my life! I had thought of quitting with a $2,000 profit but since I had only played an hour or so, I decided to keep playing. Then the tide turned.

MAY 2022 When I finally stopped playing, I cashed out a $700 ticket. Yeah, I was a $500 winner but when I got in my car and started driving home, I started thinking about what I did and how stupid I was for not quitting when I was ahead $2,000. I mean, that’s a lot of cash, the equivalent of half a royal. That night, I couldn’t sleep because all I kept thinking about was that $2k I could have had. It’s been a week, and I’m still kicking myself for giving up that two grand. I consoled Al and told him, “what’s done is done” and that he needed to forget about it. I also offered him the following advice so that if he ever gets in that situation again, he’ll be able to leave the machine (and the casino) with his profits. If you get ahead a relatively large amount of money, but you still want to play some more, do this: hit the cash out button, put that ticket in your wallet, and load the machine with another $200 in cash. It’s easy to get carried away when you’re on a hot streak, and to keep playing with your built-up credits—and cashing out your credits helps you to avoid that temptation. If Al had done this during his big winning streak, he would have cashed out two tickets: the big one for $2,250, and a second ticket with whatever credits he had left after he stopped playing (even if he lost the entire $200 in his “second” playing session, he still would have left the casino with a very nice profit). Al liked my tip, and said he was going to try it if he ever got on another hot streak while playing video poker. I said goodbye and wished him well. Epilogue: A few months afterwards, Al called me again, and I could tell by the sound of his voice that this time he had some good news to tell me. He said he’d had another very good video poker session—not as spectacular as his other one, but after getting a bunch of winning hands in a short period of time, he had $1,150 in built-up credits. This time he followed my advice, cashed out the $1,150, put the ticket in his wallet, loaded up the machine with another $200, and kept playing. When he finally quit for the day, he had about $1,000 in profit between the two tickets. He told me how great it felt having the discipline to quit while he was ahead and drive home with the thousand bucks in his wallet.

New Speakeasy Opens at Flamingo Featuring “vintage vibes with a modern twist and the melodies of swing and funky jazz music,” a new “secret” speakeasy bar called the Count Room Live has opened inside Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at the Flamingo. Eagles in Vegas, James Taylor, Too Legendary L.A. rock band the Eagles will perform the entire Hotel California album at MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 28. The band sold out all three shows in its stop in Vegas in 2019 and is coming back for more. They’ll be accompanied by a full orchestra and choir. And James Taylor will conclude a 20-date U.S. tour with his All-Star Band with a show at T-Mobile on July 30.

The Public Likes Blackjack According to Nevada Gaming Control Board, blackjack is still the most popular table game in the casino. Of the record $13.4 billion won by Nevada’s gaming industry in 2021, the state’s 1,958 blackjack tables accounted for $1.13 billion, just under 10% of the total, with a hold of 14.1%. The second-most popular table game is roulette; the state’s 424 tables won $428 million with a hold of 19.87%. Statewide, the 1,035 nickel slots won $42.4 million with a hold of 5.31%. Penny slots are the most abundant, at nearly 50,000 in the state; they accounted for $3.76 billion (28% of the total win) and held 9.85% of the handle.

Dogs Up Two Bits The rumor that the Vienna All Beef hot dogs at the South Point cart are now 20% more expensive is confirmed. That one’s up a buck from $5.99 to $6.99 (15%). $1 Million Jackpot at the Cromwell A player from Illinois was in town for a meeting and playing at his third Face Up Pai Gow session at the Cromwell recently; and after an hour at the table, he was dealt a 7-card straight flush, 6 through queen with a joker, in clubs. On Monday evenings from May 9 through Sept. 12, they’ll show an assortment of movies ranging from classics, such as Grease and The Breakfast Club, to major blockbusters, such as Aquaman, Dune, and Black Panther. Neon Museum Takes Top Spot The Neon Museum was voted number one Pop Culture Museum in the 2022 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice travel-award contest. The Neon Museum was nominated by a panel of travel experts and received the most votes from 10Best.com readers. It was the only Nevada museum nominated. “As a museum, we’re grateful to be seen as a reflection of pop culture,” said Aaron Berger, executive director of the museum. The list of nominees in the category included the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and Rancho Obi-Wan, to name a few.

Vegas Misadventures When you fall down, pick yourself up and ask, “Who pushed me?” (In my case, no one: the floor attacked me, and I did not bounce.) —NLP Robert and I were recently in Vegas and you betcha’ we played Bingo. Neither of us won a dime, but we had fun anyway because it’s Vegas, baby. This visit was special because our daughter and granddaughter joined us for several days. Emily, our red headed cyclone of a g’daughter, practiced playing blackjack before she arrived, and luck was with her. She won a chunk of money at the tables so for better or worse, she’s hooked on the game. She and her mother tore around the Strip like tornadoes visiting the Ice Bar, riding the roller coaster, and seeing Burlesque at Harrah’s. They made us tired just watching so we didn’t try to keep up. We enjoyed their company for breakfast and supper and did our own thing in between which, thanks to limited energy and bad knees, included afternoon naps. That brings me to my first misadventure. I lost hearing in my left ear which led to an ER visit. I was having trouble the week before we flew out, but I ignored Robert’s advice to get it checked out. Why do men always think they’re right? In this case, I should have listened, pun intended, because I ended up

having my ear washed out and paying mightily for the experience. Boy, did I ever hear, pun intended, about that. After the family left, Robert and I drove southeast to Laughlin. The second night there I fell off a chair and almost knocked myself out. In my defense, it was not my fault as I was sober as a judge when my chair rolled one way and I another. The chair had large rollers on the bottom and I had never encountered this in a casino. This chubby little old lady did not bounce, but the noise of my head hitting the floor brought security running. The room was spinning and stars were dancing across the ceiling when I looked up. Robert was staring at me with a dumbfounded look as he had been facing the other way when I tumbled. One icepack later and after a visit from the EMTs, I was upright. Even though I know that a blow to the back of the head can be deadly, I declined going for a Cat Scan as I was not thinking clearly. In retrospect, I should have, so don’t do as I did if it happens to you. Get checked out. Teacher Appreciation Week is May 1-7 and Wear Two Different Colored Shoes Day is on May 3. As a former teacher, I remember a shout out on the intercom from principals and little gifts from students. Nice, but what I appreciated more were notes and drawings from current and former students who remembered me fondly. It touched my heart knowing that maybe I had made a difference in the lives of some of my students. On Wear Two Different Colored Shoes Day, don’t be a fuddy-duddy. Wear different shoes and encourage others to do the same. I’ve been known to do this unintentionally, but if we all did this at Bingo on May 3rd that would be a hoot. Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you.
