Bingo Meanies Dear Aunt Bingo, I know you get lots of letters from people who say that cheating is going on at their Bingo halls.

Have you ever gotten a letter from someone who has been accused of cheating? Because that’s what is happening to me right now.

I have had some good luck lately.

I also have a handful of friends and one relative that work at the Bingo where I have been winning. Two times now people have muttered sarcastic things just loud enough for me to hear suggesting that my bingo wins are suspicious and I have someone “helping” me win.

It is stupid and upsetting and is ruining my good luck and love of Bingo. I stand in line just like everyone else, I pay my money just like everyone else, I am handed my Bingo paper pads just like everyone else—I am doing nothing out of the ordinary that people could observe and say is suspicious and cheating. What would you do?

Dear M.R.M., My advice? Ignore it.

Hopefully you have Bingo buddies there who support you and know that you are an honest person who is having a lucky streak. And isn’t that what we are all there for? To win!?

These people who are accusing you are simply mean-spirited and jealous and are doing what they can to diminish your enjoyment at winning. If you give in to them, then they have achieved their goal.

If you ignore them—safe in the knowledge that you are winning fair and square—then you have won, again, and they have failed.

There will always be unhappy people who can only feel good about themselves by dragging down those around them. They do not deserve a moment of our attention. —Aunt Bingo Share your views! For These Vets, Haircuts Are LifeChanging I pushed through the coffee shop’s back door and found the attic dormitory crowd in the kitchen. Sarge had arranged for the lady who gave free haircuts at the senior center to come in and “neaten up” the homeless veterans before they went on job interviews. She breezed through the door with a plastic tarp for the floor, fancy salon wraps for their shoulders, a hand mirror, and a bag of scissors, combs, razors, sprays and gels, plus a stack of cosmetology magazines from which each veteran could choose his preferred hairstyle. All just opted for “something shorter.”

For one of the veterans, the one with long, tangled hair past his shoulders and a full bushy beard and mustache that covered half of his face, the “something shorter” turned into “more, please” as she

THE

Mr. Melvin Kaminsky, the Brooklyn-born, 93-year-old comedy mastermind better known as Mel Brooks, really knows his satire. As a writer and director, he’s shepherded several movies to the top of the American Film Institute’s list of best comedies, holds a coveted EGOT status (meaning, he has won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards) and boasts multiple films in the National Film Registry, a list of culturally significant films that are worthy of preservation by the Library of Congress. In the business of making a darn good movie that’s making fun of another movie, he has no equal.

Blazing Saddles — A 1974 masterpiece of black comedy, this film stars Cleavon Little as Bart, a Black sheriff installed as a patsy to offend townspeople seeking protection from a group of ne’erdo-wells sicced on them by an underhanded government official looking to get rich off their land.

Gene Wilder backs up Bart as a boozy gunslinger named Jim, aka “The Waco Kid.” Hijinks ensue, as you’d expect.

Young Frankenstein — Also in 1974 — and done on a promise to

cut.

“Hello again,” he quietly said to his image in the small mirror.

“Haven’t seen you in a long time.”

He handed the lady a few bills, even though he didn’t need to pay, and then trotted up the street to the drug store, where he bought a pack of disposable razors and shave cream.

Standing outside under the streetlight after the haircuts, Sarge was subdued. “Did you see how his eyes lit up, seeing himself in the mirror like that? All trimmed and shaved? And all of them confident now about finding jobs?”

He quietly muttered an uncharacteristic string of profanities, then spun to face me.

The VA has to do better. Towns have to do better.”

As he stared off across the parking lot, I pointed out that he’d singlehandedly changed the lives of these four men by opening the dormitory.

He faced me again and said, “Well, I’m not done yet.”

Gene Wilder for his involvement in Blazing Saddles — Brooks parodies the Universal monster franchise with Wilder in the title role and Peter Boyle playing his monster.

High Anxiety — Brooks, as Dr. Richard Harpo Thorndyke, takes on the full lead, supported by Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman and more in this 1977 sendup of Hitchcockian suspense.

History of the World — Historical retelling gets its own Brooks treatment in 1981’s History of the World: Part 1, which skewers the Stone Age to the French Revolution. Brooks’ roles range from Moses (who brings God’s 15 ... I mean 10 Commandments to the people), to Torquemada in a musical salute to the Spanish Inquisition.

Spaceballs — This 1987 “Star Wars” spoof has Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, hired to track down Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), whose planet is in the crosshairs of Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis).

Lone Starr and his sidekick Barf (John Candy) launch a renegade rescue effort in their Winnebago spaceship. Mel Brooks holds dual roles as President Skroob and Yogurt (can you guess who he’s parodying there?).

Robin Hood: Men in Tights — Cary Elwes is behind the bow as do-gooder Robin of Loxley, who returns from the Crusades to find that the local sheriff (of “Rottingham,” played by Roger Rees) has plunged his home into a hot mess. He takes to the forest with a band of merry men while pursuing justice and the lovely Amy Yasbeck as Maid Marian, with her Everlast chastity belt.

There’s the Rub Rodney invited me to an Early Early Bird session that started at ten-thirty in the morning. A bit too early for me, I thought, but what the heck, I knew we’d have fun.

We had arranged our daubers and papers when I suddenly got a cramp in my hand. Rodney gently took hold of the painful paw and began giving me a great hand massage. Now this is really super, I thought. Imagine my not knowing Rodney could give massages like that.

He had just finished my nonaching hand when Kate and Clifford blew in. They each had to have a hand massage and then it was time to start playing. Carla called over from the next table, “Hey, Rodney, what do I have to do to get in on the massage?”

“See me at intermission,” Rodney called back laughing. We played

JUNE 2021 earnestly but unsuccessfully until the break and then women were lined up waiting for the magic hand rub.

“Be careful,” warned Kate. “I think he may rub off your Bingo wins to improve his own chances.

He’s a sly ole fox.”

“I’ll risk it,” said Carla wiggling her fingers. “Man, that feels good.

Besides, I’ve been on five or six times. I’ll hit soon. Thanks, Rod.” She took her soothed hands back to her table and Rod started in on the next in line.

“You could make a business out of this,” I quipped.

“Now don’t always be thinking of profit,” said Rodney sternly. “I like to make people feel better.

Especially ladies.” There was a wicked gleam in his eyes that I knew to be a signal that he wants a little extra pampering.

“Look,” I said, digging in my bag.

“I brought you some of those little cream puffs you like so well.”

“Mini profiteroles,” he murmured.

“My very favorite.” He chewed rapturously. “Next time bring some chocolate sauce to dip them in.” I poked him in the ribs.

We had a good bit of excitement when Cliff was on for the Wheel game. That meant he might get a chance to spin the wheel and maybe win a new car. He did, in fact, win the game, but one number too many for the wheel spin. He won $150, so none of us complained.

Suddenly there was a commotion at the door of our section as a

young man argued his way past the attendant. He rushed over to Rodney and yelled, “You’ve got to come right now. Did you forget the parade?”

“Darned if I didn’t,” said Rod. “I got so involved with the ladies and their hands that I forgot all about it.”

“You’ve got to come NOW,” insisted the young man. “They’re lining up and you are the leader in your section and they’re all waiting.”

“Sorry, Love,” Rod said to me. “I gotta go. Here, play mine. I’ll call you.” He shoved his papers at me and rushed out, the young man following and nearly pushing him.

I was on for the final blackout and was very excited. Warm energy flowed through my newly massaged hand. I felt confident and lucky. That hand wanted to daub G-48 worse than anything.

Finally, the number came up in the screen and I held my breath waiting to see if anyone Bingoed.

No one called out so it was my win and I was delighted.

“Good for you,” said Kate, “I think you get the big $500 prize.”

They verified the card and I did win the big money. I didn’t tell anyone it was on one of Rodney’s cards.

Remembering Someone Special Over the years I have played Bingo in a lot of different kinds of halls in a lot of different cities.

Because of that, when I got an e-mail last week asking about my favorite memory of Bingo, I was ready to respond.

Marjorie M., from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, wrote to ask: “Bob, could you share with us your favorite memory of Bingo or some favorite person you met over the years?” Well, that’s easy: Many years ago, while visiting a friend in Portland, Oregon, it was suggested that we go to the local Elks Lodge Bingo that night. I was very surprised when one of the people in our party noted that he had never played Bingo before.

Hasn’t EVERYONE played Bingo?

I knew the evening was going to be interesting. Even though this person hadn’t played before, I assumed he would be a quick

learner. After all, he had been in the U.S. military most of his life and was assigned to duty with Air Force One for decades.

He had a house full of citations and photographs of himself with world leaders and important dignitaries. If ANYONE would be able to understand the simple rules of Bingo, it would be this person. I was completely wrong.

The evening was a disaster.

The first thing I noticed was that our visiting friend seemed to be in some kind of daze. I will admit that the session was not easy even for a seasoned veteran. It was one of those halls where it was possible to Bingo in about ten different patterns. As you know, I have never liked that concept. I think it should be banned.

Anyway, I abandoned my own cards and started helping the guy with his. He just didn’t seem to be catching on at all. It was getting more and more frustrating as the night progressed. I kept trying to help him, but the harder I tried the more he seemed to get upset.

At one point he said: “What kind of silly, CHILDISH GAME is this, anyhow?”

Well, the session finally finished.

He had never had a Bingo–at least as far as I could tell–and I stopped playing my cards after the first game. Nonetheless, it WAS a night to remember.

So, I ask: What’s wrong with Bingo being a “childish game?”

Q: We have a fenced backyard and have no problem letting our dog “Ace” out to roam. However, for the first time, Ace ran into a skunk! Now I’m trying to get rid of that horrible skunk odor. What can I use to clean his fur? And how do I keep skunks off my property? — Suzie H., via email A: Skunk encounters are pretty awful. And when a dog gets a good soaking from the skunk’s defensive spray, it can be tough to get out of its hair. The American Kennel Club’s website (www.akc.org) has some expert advice on getting rid of the skunk smell on dogs. Rule No. 1: Do not bring the dog in the house if you can avoid it.

They recommend a homemade solution to break up and remove the odiferous oil that makes up skunk spray: Mix a quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (available over the counter at the local pharmacy) with two teaspoons of mild dish

soap and a quarter cup of baking soda. This mixture will start foaming immediately, so have Ace ready. Rub the foamy solution into his coat, soaking it completely.

(Avoiding his eyes or ears.) Leave it on for five minutes, then rinse.

Discard any unused solution.

To keep the skunk from coming back, determine where it’s getting into your yard and when. Open trash cans or compost piles are attractive foraging spots. Skunks are most active after sundown or in the early morning hours. Ace may be fine in the yard during the day, but you should accompany him on potty breaks before sunrise or after sundown to prevent another stinky encounter.

A Wren I Saw Yesterday

Only a breath of time he stayed then spread his wings and lo! was gone.

The snow will melt and prints will fade no trace or record will there be Of this sweet visit that he paid to me alone as I watch for spring but this memory will be oft replayed.

Bingo Basics Hi Guy, I see that they call smaller Bingos “Charity Bingos.” What does that mean, exactly? The money players spend is donated to charity? Do you know what these charities are and how they are picked? —Jerome, via email Hi Jerome, Put simply, charity Bingos operate in order to generate funds for charitable work. Some charities have their own licenses and offer their own games. Others are part of a “pool” of charities that may receive a portion of Bingo winnings from a particular organization. For example, a Knights of Columbus Bingo will direct some of the funds to KofC activities and the rest is shared among other not-for-profits the Knights have chosen to help.

I do not know the specific process an organization goes through to

Polish Fest Bingo

Dear Guy, The Bingo where I attend is frequented by several groups of teenage boys. They occasionally get a bit loud, but otherwise are not a problem. But I have to be honest, I am not sure how I feel about such young guys playing Bingo. Casinos keep underage players out. They can get big fines if they are caught letting underage players play. Yet here in a community Bingo hall it seems to be OK. Brendan B., Michigan

Dear Brendan, I see your point, Bingo is gambling, and perhaps youngsters should not be exposed to it. Some folks say no one under 18 should be allowed into a Bingo hall, regardless of how low the stakes are. Others say they would rather see teens enjoying a quiet evening of Bingo than running around bored and getting into trouble.

As youngsters, my brother and I would go to Bingo on occasion with a parent or friends, and never thought it was that big of a deal. It was just a game and we had a shot at winning some money. Based on that experience, I would have to say that I still feel the same way and have no real problem with teens playing Bingo.

I certainly welcome other opinions from readers. —Guy

Don’t Make These Mistakes Do you want to improve your blackjack game? You can by avoiding these common mistakes made by blackjack players.

Playing 6-5 Games Unfortunately, many casinos offer blackjack games where a player blackjack pays only 6-5 (instead of the traditional 3-2).

This is a horrible game for players even when it’s offered on a singledeck game. Stay away from any blackjack game that doesn’t pay 3-2 for a blackjack. (If you are unsure what a blackjack pays, before you sit down and buy-in ask the dealer. If they say “6-5,” tell them adios.)

Playing with a Continuous Shuffling Machine (CSM) A CSM is an automatic shuffling device used by many casinos.

It’s different from the traditional automatic shufflers that have been in use for many years. With a CSM, the dealer takes the discards from each round (or several rounds) and puts them back into the CSM where they are randomly mixed with the rest of the cards (usually a CSM holds 4-5 decks).

Every round with a CSM is like playing a round from a freshly shuffled deck of cards. Because there is no pause in the action for a dealer hand-shuffle, the casino can deal roughly 20% more hands per hour with a CSM. This

JUNE 2021 increases a player’s exposure to the house edge and the average player’s theoretical hourly loss will correspondingly increase.

Therefore, CSMs will put a hurt on your bankroll. Don’t play on tables that have them!

Using a Progressive Betting System If I’ve said this once, I’ve said it a hundred times—progressive betting systems will not change your odds of winning one iota.

Some of them are dangerous; others will have you betting more than you normally would and, therefore, your theoretical loss will increase. Whether or not your previous hand just won (or lost) has no bearing on whether your next hand will win (or lose). The only variable that affects your chances of winning in blackjack is the ratio of high cards to low cards in the un-played deck(s) of cards.

Therefore, the only time it makes mathematical sense to increase your bets is when the un-played cards contains more high cards than low cards. Therefore, you should be watching the cards on the layout on each round. If you don’t see many picture cards or aces in the early rounds that would be a good time to increase your bets (or better yet, learn a simple card counting system like Speed Count).

Not Using Basic Strategy Playing by hunches is the biggest mistake I see players make at blackjack. In this day and age, the correct basic playing strategy for blackjack is readily available in books and on the Internet. Why, you can even take a strategy card with you when you play. You’ll face a 1% or higher house edge if you play by hunches and only a half a percent house edge if you play by the basic strategy. Enough said.

Making Side Bets Players can make numerous side bets while they play blackjack.

Match Pair, Lucky Ladies, you name it, you’ll probably see it on the table the next time you play.

But the billion-dollar win is solid evidence of how much demand had been pent up during the closures and subsequent capacity restrictions; the casino occupancy limit was raised from 25% to 50% of total capacity on March 15. In addition, March Madness and stimulus money drove visitation and revenue. In fact, five jurisdictions set all-time gambling-revenue records in March: downtown Las Vegas, the Boulder Strip, and Clark County along with Elko County in eastern Nevada and Carson Valley in the north.

MEGA HIT This past Spring, an early morning visitor from New Mexico hit the largest Megabucks jackpot since Christmas Eve for $10.5 million at

TRIP TO MARS? It looks like Bruno Mars will be the first headliner to relaunch Strip residencies when he appears at the Park Theater at Park MGM over the July Fourth weekend. Mars will perform July 3, 4, 9, 10, 23, and 24.

Tickets start at $99.50, plus fees, available through Ticketmaster. If all goes according to plan, Mars will bump Usher from the first spot; Usher is scheduled to open at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on July 16.

Doughnuts and Onion Breath I have no plants in my house.

They won’t live for me. Some of them don’t even wait to die, they commit suicide.

—Jerry Seinfeld I grew up on a farm in rural Ohio, but I am not a typical farmer’s daughter in that I hate gardens, gardening, and everything associated with them. Like most families did in those days, our garden was huge and all family members participated in its upkeep. My siblings and I were roused out of bed early before it got too hot so we could weed, hoe, and spray for bugs. Later in the season we gathered the vegetables and helped with the canning; my job being to wash the jars which were inevitably full of bugs because of their winter storage. Yes, you can call me an ungrateful hypocrite and I will freely admit to it because I ate with gusto the produce of our labor, but that didn’t change the fact that I loathed all the hard work involved.

I mention this because June 6th is Gardening Exercise Day and I’m told that mind, body, and soul benefit as calories are burnt, yadda, yadda, yadda. A farmer’s daughter I am, but a lover of gardening, I definitely am not. I guess it’s a good thing I no longer have to grow my own food

to survive, because truth be told, I can’t even keep potted flowers alive. I have two and my friend, Sandy, regularly takes them to her home for rescue and resuscitation.

I can literally hear them scream no, no when she returns them to me; so sad.

On the other hand, two other holidays this month honor two of my favorite foods, doughnuts and onions. National Doughnut Day is June 4th and some of the national chains offer a free doughnut to solicit donations to the Salvation Army or other worthy cause.

My other favorite food, onions, are celebrated on June 27th, National Onion Day. Everyone I know loves onions; that is, except my neighbor who wouldn’t eat them if a tiger was biting her butt and she could save herself by eating an onion slice. Besides hating everything about them, Margaret also has two dogs to whom onions can be toxic. That’s because onions carry a compound poison that can easily be absorbed by a dog’s digestive system, cause anemia, and lead to death. As for me, I grew up eating mustard and onion on biscuits and to this day, I still love them. What’s this got to do with Bingo? Well, I’m thinking instead of gardening which I hate, I can exercise by going to Bingo which I love. I can walk around before Bingo starts and get my exercise steps in by visiting my buddies; then I can visit the snack bar where I can order a big old hamburger with a slice of onion. In this age of Covid, my onion breath will reinforce social distancing from other players. Fortunately, this does not apply to my husband who loves onions as much as I. When we both have onion breath, neither of us can complain. Until next month, may Lady Luck, hopefully without onion breath, blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.

Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize.

Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month’s contest.

Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing.
