Building Community with Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo: I enjoy going to Bingo on occasion with friends and consider myself lucky to be in my 80s and still able to get out and do things like this.

There are many people in my senior community who do not have the luxury of getting out as easily as I do to go shopping, see a movie or play Bingo. They still wish to be active, but for various physical/ health reasons must stay close to home.

I was thinking it would be fun to start a Bingo for these people.

It’s a fairly large community and I think it would be easy to get enough players. People could buy into the games by paying for their cards (just a few dollars) and that money would be for prizes and any equipment we needed to purchase.

Do you know of other senior groups that have done this? How difficult is it to get a community Bingo going?

Anna R., Ohio Dear Anna, I applaud you for wanting to do something to enhance the lives of those who live in your community.

You have a very good heart.

Your idea of hosting a community Bingo sounds like a simple one, but what you are proposing is actually a version of the kinds of Bingo you currently attend, and

MAY 2020 those Bingos require local/state approval and ongoing supervision.

The minute you involve money in Bingo it becomes wagering, a.k.a. gambling, which gaming authorities take quite seriously.

It may sound like a fun little community activity, which it certainly can be, but the money component, no matter how small, changes the entire dynamic of your games.

Just last year in California, for example, the Los Angeles Police Department closed down a Bingo in a senior center that was charging players 25 cents per card and giving dollar store items as prizes. No matter how small the buy-in was, it was still a buy-in, which made the games illegal.

Although the Bingo had been offered for years, all it took was a phone call from one disgruntled resident to halt everything. On a brighter note, the community center eventually got a license and resumed its Bingo.

My advice is that if you decide to further explore offering Bingo in your community, keep money out of it. Let players play for free; hopefully there is an activity fund where you can get money to buy prizes.

On the other hand, if you want to offer full-fledged Bingo with buy-ins and cash prizes, the Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Law Section—which regulates Bingo and licenses nonprofit organizations eligible to use Bingo as a fundraising mechanism— will determine if you qualify as a nonprofit organization and can guide you through the steps necessary to launch a Bingo. The Ohio AG Help Center may be reached at 800-282-0515.

Other readers considering the idea of starting a Bingo should look online for the local entity that regulates Bingo in their state, contact them and go from there.

New VA Patient Advocate System The Department of Veterans Affairs has trained 8,300 employees to serve as patient advocates. The Patient Advocate Tracking System Replacement (PATS-R) program is now up and running in all facilities around the country. What this new more hands-on system offers veterans is more immediate care and sometimes immediate answers.

In the past, either you or someone on your medical team would speak to your advocate, who would research the problem, sending emails to the various departments involved. Eventually an answer would come back.

Now, after a lot of research into what is really needed, you’ll talk to one of the 8,300 medical staff who have been trained to get a faster resolution to your problem. Even better, this advocate can often solve your problem right then and there, without even asking anyone

1917 (R) — This riveting firstperson war story by celebrated director Sam Mendes centers around two British lance corporals, Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay), who are sent across enemy territory to halt the advance of a division of British soldiers after it’s discovered that a German retreat is a ruse. With communication lines cut, the division is almost certainly marching into oblivion if they don’t get through. In the thick of war, through the dead of night and with almost no time in which to complete this impossible feat, the two soldiers set out with singular, unwavering focus, most especially because one of the advancing soldiers is Blake’s brother. Filmed as one continuous take, the action never relents and feels very personal, almost as if you are the third member of the team.

DOG OF THE MONTH The Grudge (R) — A sidecar sequel in the Grudge family of films, 2020’s offering is a string of stories connected to 44 Reyburn Drive, which is possessed by the ghost of Kayako Saeki (a character originating in the Japanese Juon franchise). A young mother kills her family. A woman with dementia relies on her unrealistic but adoring husband. A police officer winds up in a sanitarium with half a face just for setting foot inside the house. A real estate agent ends up taking his work home with him. There’s a lot to work with, but somehow, this is nothing more than ho-hum horror with terrible writing.

Beach Bingo We will now leave Kate and Cliff and Paul for the moment and tune in to Barb and her problems.

Barb had always wanted to play Beach Bingo so when she saw an ad for it, she contacted me for the drive to Ocean Shores for the day. She was so excited to play outside in the sunshine where she could see the waves rolling in even though we all had to be back from the actual ocean in order to hear.

Barb was playing an inordinate number of cards and using a machine to help. The first game was four corners and Barb was quickly on. Her machine told her what numbers she needed on three cards and I almost forgot to daub my own cards so fascinated was I with her arrangements.

She did not win that game and we moved on to the next which was three in a corner. I thought the corners are getting a workout today. A gust of wind came up and I struggled with my cards,

MAY 2020 but Barb was secure with her machine.

We next played the small cross and as I wrestled with my cards, Barb serenely let her machine do the work. And she won. I was very pleased with her $125 but she seemed quite nonchalant. We moved on to the small diamond which was new to me and I was eager to try. It is two numbers on top of each other and two numbers side by side adjacent.

Barb was quickly on again and I thought I could get tired of this pretty fast. But someone else won and we moved on to the next game which was called Ocean Waves. It consisted of the middle B, the second I, the third N, the second G and the third O. I thought this rather ingenious and was happily daubing away when someone else won.

“That’s a game I will remember,” I thought.

We came up to intermission and Barb was hungry so we each got a sandwich and I giggled as I thought, “A sandwich in the sand playing Bingo.” I must be losing it, whatever it is.

Next we played Beach Ball, which was the third B, the second and fourth I, the top and bottom Ns, the second and fourth G’s and the third O. It was not at all complicated once you got it down. Barb was on a couple of times but someone else won.

Next came a standard hard way which was a relief after all the new games. Barb was getting tired I could tell and knew the games would shortly be over.

When Bonanza came along, the machine adjusted itself which impressed me, but I would rather daub my own cards. I think it is more fun that way. I was on twice when someone else won and I was just disgusted.

“It’s not my day, I guess,” I grumbled.

Barb disagreed, “You’ve had a very good day and so have I. Now let’s go see if we can find some clam strips for dinner. My treat.”

And, thus ended our first “Beach Bingo” day. As we ate our clam strips, I realized my ears were ringing from the sound of the ocean and that I was an inlander at heart. We agreed we would like to do it again. “But not too soon, right?” said Barb with a smile.

Q: I’ve been watching American Idol since the very beginning and loved Kelly Clarkson. I’m so happy for her success. Whatever happened to Justin, the first runner-up with the curly hair? For the past nearly twenty years I have been expressing my feelings in this column and also reading some of the mail sent to me at bobonbingo@earthlink. net. I constantly read stories about really nice people who are Bingo callers or who work at Bingo establishments. I have been quick to say, “Thanks!” to them, but I think it’s about time for an official award. I haven’t had much time to talk about this with my boss, but I wanted to leak some of the details now.

The contest to find BOB’S BINGO BESTS will be held sometime in the fall. I need the next few months to get some ideas together and to figure out what might be the best prize I can award to the winner.

I envision two winners: BEST Bingo Caller and MOST FRIENDLY Bingo hall.

But, in the meantime, I am enlisting your help in designing the contest. I personally have several criteria that I think should be part of the judging.

And, it’s rather difficult for me to mention the first one, because I know I will be stepping on some peoples’ toes.

You see, some of the nicest, sweetest, most-wonderful Bingo callers MUMBLE. I know they don’t do it on purpose, but

there does not seem to be any quality control in Bingo halls.

I know it would be a delicate thing for a manager to go up to a caller and say, “You know, I can’t understand a word you’re saying.”

Again, the rule should be: “If you have to look at the tote board to see which number has been called …something is wrong.”

Anyway, that issue aside, there has to be a way to reward the best Bingo callers in the country with some kind of special prize…or something.

I really wish I could say more about the contest, but the idea just came into my mind about ten minutes before I had to send off this column.

Before signing off this month, I’d like to relay a short comment I got in an e-mail recently from someone who also grew up in Indiana…as did I. I’ll call her Betty S. She dropped me a short note to say, “I saw your Bob on bingo item. I was surprised how our childhood history is nearly the same. I am from Thorntown, Indiana and I lived there in 1957.” Thanks, Betty. It would appear that we both have very similar memories of Bingo from our childhood.

Finally, my thanks to the Bingo people at The Eureka in Mesquite, Nevada, for such a warm welcome when I visited them recently.

Reader Tips on Tipping Hi Guy, Here in Las Vegas tipping is expected at all Bingo rooms and most people do.

Personally, I tip 10%; if I win $100, the worker gets ten bucks. With a $1,000 jackpot, I deduct what I spent, usually $150 per session, and tip on $850.

Now…when getting up into the tens of thousands— such as with some big Vegas cashballs—I will not tip $4,700 on a $47,000 payout because that’s a bit much for people you really don’t know.

Recently a lady won that much at a Vegas Bingo and she tipped $500.

Regarding caller tipping: The callers here are part of all tips because they change places with floor workers and sell at windows before Bingo.

Hi Bobby, I will assume until I hear otherwise that your 10% is the going rate. But, to be honest, I expected this to be a higher number.

As the following letter mentions, you are tipping on service the same way as you would a server in a restaurant.

That being the case, I don’t think I’ve tipped a server less than 20% in twenty years.

Doesn’t that make 10% a little miserly?

Can you imagine if the percentage rule held no matter how high the jackpot?

The look on the workers’ faces when you hand them a $4,700 tip would be priceless.

Sovereign Nation games, Vegas-style (houses privately owned), etc., I would tip at if I ever won. Any amount greater than $20, 10% tip.

At churches, firehalls and other not-for-profit houses with volunteers, I do not tip.

it and it ends up in the till anyhow. So, you may as well parlay that tip and blow it on pull tabs, more pizza or a fresh sparkly house dabber.

That way, the 10% still goes to the house and you get an extra treat.

Tennessee Jed Hi Jed, As I said in my response to the previous letter, 10% seems low to me if you are comparing a tip for Bingo workers to one for restaurant servers. In my world, servers get 20%.

As far as tipping at charity Bingo, that’s always been a no-no. The workers are there as volunteers; if I’m not mistake, it is illegal for them to accept any type of payment for their service. —Guy Hi Guy, I loved your response to MBB regarding cell phones in the Bingo hall. Yours was a balanced answer, taking to task those who are rude but graciously making exceptions for those who need to have the phones on for family or personal reasons.

I just wanted to add that, mathematically, those cell phone rings are an absolute inevitability. If a Bingo hall usually holds, say, 150 players, and each one of those players just one time a year

forgets to turn their phone off and it rings, that works out to an average of three cell phone rings every week in the hall.

No rudeness. Just us being human. So, let’s be human to each other in return.

As far as the “inevitability” of phones ringing at inappropriate times, I think you are being a little too generous. At the movies you have messages on the screen asking people to silence their phones. At Bingo the caller typically asks players to mute their phones before the start of the games. Mind Your Gambling Manners Most novice players are very self-conscious about saying or doing the wrong thing when they gamble. It probably stems from an embarrassing situation they once had like being admonished by a blackjack dealer for touching the cards or receiving icy glares from fellow craps players when the dice touched their dangling hand. Even slot players come under scrutiny from other players especially when they try to play “their” machine. Although most of the codes of casino behavior are covered by rules and regulations, there are still plenty of unwritten ones that you won’t find in casino pamphlets or books for casino players. For example, take a simple thing like talking to or jostling a hot craps shooter. There is no casino rule that says you can’t, but if do, you will be committing a major faux pas in craps.

In the next several columns we’ll cover general and game specific casino manners for novice players. And for you seasoned veterans out there, it doesn’t hurt to brush up on your casino manners to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation.

General --Before you sit down and play any table game, always check the placard located somewhere on the table that tells you the table minimum and maximum bets. Nothing can be more embarrassing, and annoying to other players, as when a player buys into a game and makes a first bet of $5 only to be told by the dealer pointing to the placard, “The minimum bet is

--You must convert cash to casino chips when you play table games.

--When you buy-in keep in mind that dealers are not allowed to take cash directly from your hand. Always place your money on the table and ask the dealer for chips.

--When you are finished playing and want to convert your smaller denomination chips to larger ones, wait for a pause in the action before you ask the dealer to color you up.

--Don’t place any objects such as purses, wallets, or bags, anywhere on the playing table.

Drinks are OK as long as you use the drink holders that are provided to players (spilling a drink on a table will cause chaos, a hold up in play, disgruntled players and employees, and embarrassment, so be extra careful with drinks).

--As a general rule, do not touch the chips that you have wagered once the playing round has started. Likewise, don’t touch your winning chips until after the dealer collects all losing bets and pays off winners.

--Loud abusive language and temper tantrums when you are losing are verboten. And don’t blame the dealer for your bad luck or accuse them of cheating.

Most likely you are just having a bad run which happens when you gamble.

--Yes, drinks are free for all players in a casino but it’s common courtesy to tip the cocktail waitress that brings your free drink. Likewise, if your dealer has been friendly and helpful and made your playing experience enjoyable, thank him/her by leaving a tip (or make a bet for the dealer).

--Don’t take your children into a casino to watch the action.

This is most annoying to serious players. Plus, in most gaming jurisdictions you are not allowed to bring children into the casino (they don’t belong there anyway).

If you have teenagers, be mindful of the minimum age requirements for players (usually 21 years old). And if you disobey the rules and junior gets lucky and hits a big slot jackpot, don’t be too surprised if the casino doesn’t payoff (they are not obliged to pay underage players).

What's News in Nevada . . .

WILL VIRUS SHUT DOWN CONVENTIONS? As of this writing–and things can change by the minute–promotors of several up-coming conventions and expos planned for Las Vegas and Reno are on “pins and needles,” monitoring the spread of the Corona Virus. The first major national event to decide NOT to open its doors was to have been held in Texas, in Austin. If you are thinking about this only in terms of what a disappointment it would be to have your Vegas or Reno trip cancelled, think in terms of the wages lost in those two cities when any major event is canceled.

MOBILE MGM BETTING MGM Resorts International tells media that its nine venues in Las Vegas had begun rolling out the new mobile-friendly BetMGM sports betting service. The protocol gives aficionados the ability to place wagers on a wide range of professional and collegiate sporting events. MGM says that it has simply rebranded PlayMGM, which it started in 2017. That service has been operated in partnership with the Roar Digital LLC joint venture.

RENO’S MAJOR CHEERLEADER A man whose name became synonymous with Reno, Bob Cashell, has died. Cashell served as mayor of Reno for three terms.

He was a life-long civic booster and casino owner. He was remembered as a major driving force in the commercial development of this area for half a century. He moved to Reno in the late 1960s from

Longview, Texas, buying a truck stop that eventually became Boomtown Casino. Bob Cashell was 81.

TRIBE GIFTS UNIVERSITY GAMING SCHOOL The California-based San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has just awarded a $9-million gift to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in support of the Harrah College of Hospitality and Boyd School of Law. Of the total gift, $6 million will go toward course development, including the addition of new online and on-campus tribal gaming courses, and an endowed chair at the Harrah College. Another $3 million will provide tribal gamingfocused curricular, faculty and program support at the law school, including funding for a professor-inresidence and a visiting professor.

CASINO’S CORKSCREW DRIVEWAY It isn’t that the Railroad Pass Casino, south of Las Vegas on the road to Boulder City, has such a serpentine entrance driveway, it’s just that the Nevada State Highway Department nearly left it high-anddry when it redesigned the highway some time ago. However, it didn’t take long for the crowds to get back, once they figured out how to navigate the state’s new exit ramp at the casino. The casino is one of the oldest in the area. It opened its doors in 1931 to cash in on a sudden need for entertainment for a large number of men working at the nearby Hoover Dam site.

Snakes, not Rodents?

In my youth on one memorable Memorial Day in May, it snowed!

I sat in our family car at New Zion Cemetery and everyone else wore heavy coats as the cemetery association held their annual meeting.

Each season has plusses and minuses. Spring is renewal of life with budding trees and blooming flowers. Summer is hot days with scant clothing, barbecues, and family reunions. Fall is harvesting crops and myriad colored trees.

Winter is snuggling up by the fireplace, hot chocolate with amaretto, and watching snow pile up outside our homes.

Right now, we are enjoying spring and the merry month of May. I hope you remembered to get up at dawn on May 1st and wash your face in the morning dew. This will aid in removing freckles and pimples, enhance our complexions, and purify our hearts. I’m on board with that as I have numerous freckles and also moles, some of which might be precursors to skin cancer. I

watch mine carefully and see a dermatologist regularly as skin cancer is the most common of all human cancers. Over one million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with it each year.

Are you, like our daughter, a cat person? If so, then you should know that cats born in May will not catch rodents, but instead bring home snakes. Yikes. My husband, Robert is deathly afraid of snakes.

One April Fool’s Day I put a rubber snake under the gas pedal of our family car. It stayed there about five minutes before it dawned on me what I had done. Robert upon seeing the snake would likely drive through the back of our garage.

Oops, not good, so I moved the snake to our shower stall. His reaction was not nearly as funny as it could have been, but it left our garage intact.

A few other May superstitions to be aware of include to never buy a broom, wash blankets, or plan a wedding during this month.

Robert would probably laugh and say witches like me can never have enough brooms, but I don’t see the humor.

So, that brings me to May bingo.

For those of us who washed our faces in the morning dew on the first day of this month, it’s a chance to play bingo with a fresh face along with a fresh attitude. Boy, do I ever need that. Yes, dear readers, call me a loser and stamp it on my forehead because that I am for sure. My losing streak continues as does Robert’s. He was ready for the $12,000 cash ball at a Station casino in Vegas in March, but alas, it was not to be. To say he had a sunny attitude after someone else bingoed would be a big fat lie. He blamed it on me because I was sitting beside him. Maybe he was right. Until next month, may Lady Luck treat you better than she’s been treating me. Email me at nlpvzw6172@gmail.com. Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.

Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received.

Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize.

Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month's contest.

Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing.
