Lottie Curry plays Bingo 4 times a week. If you play Bingo anywhere in Southeastern Wisconsin, chances are pretty good that you’ve seen her around here or there. We asked Lottie what is the secret to staying young and active? She said, “I’m 95 and I’ve been playing Bingo at least 50 years. I love it because I’m able to get out with other people and have fun”. We think that’s great. We met up with Lottie at the Knights of Columbus at 732 Badger Ave. in South Milwauee where they play Bingo every Monday. The doors open at 4PM, they start selling at 5PM and Bingo starts at 6PM. Prize money totals $3,300 for Bingo plus they have the Lucky Duck Raffle that has been paying out over $400 Grand Prize, over $200 Second Prize and a handful of $25 consolation prizes. The last two Bingo Games of the night are Guaranteed $500 Jackpots. Add it all up and that’s a great payday every Monday night for area Bingo players. They have a great Bingo Kitchen for Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Sausages, etc, the bar serves beer and soda too. They have pull tabs and other charity raffles. What would you have done in this situation? I didn’t have any personal marks (like initials) on the stolen sheet, other than the purple-ink dauber marks. In the future I guess I’ll have to turn every sheet over and put my initials on it to protect my sheets from future theft. —JG, Mesa, Arizona
The Case of the Missing Paper Dear Aunt Bingo, Recently a group of my Bingo buddies and I were at a Bingo game. We had bought our game sheets and were doing our “homework” prior to play starting—daubing free spaces, marking complex patterns, and marking the odd/even game sheets. I’d finished marking my 9-on odd/even sheet and laid it aside to do something else. I then reached for the odd/even sheet I’d set aside…and it wasn’t there! I looked around the table and on the vacant chair to my right. One of my buddies was seated to my left and the others also were toward the left. Beyond the vacant chair to my right was another player and right across from her was her partner. I looked at the right-hand lady’s game sheets and on top of them I saw my even/odds! (I used a purple dauber; the thief had a green dauber in her hand.) “Excuse me, that’s my odd/even sheet,” I said to her. “Oh, no, that’s mine,” she replied. Rather than make a scene, I let it go. The partner said nothing. My feeling is that the thief is a kleptomaniac, has memory trouble, or inadvertently stole my game sheet. Anyway, I’m glad to report that she did not win! I hurried back to the counter and bought more odd/even games before play started. I had to daub quickly as there was not much time left.

Dear JG, That is really strange—that a person sitting right next to you would take your paper, and with it sitting right in front of her where both of you could see it, would then deny that it was yours! It is so brazen, in fact, that I am inclined to guess that this person really did not realize she had taken it. If she were colorblind, then the dauber ink would all look the same to her. And if she were a bit feeble, she might have forgotten to buy her own odd/even, thought that she had, and when she was doing her own “homework” in preparation for the games, simply scooped up your paper with hers without a second thought. Now the flip side: This is a horrible woman who stole your paper and dared you to claim otherwise by sitting it right on top of her other Bingo paper and waiting for you to notice. When you did, she simply denied it to see what you would do next. When you did nothing, she just kept it and played it. What would I have done in this instance? I think I would have gone one more round with her, pointing out that the dauber ink on the sheet did not match her dauber and giving her one last chance to come clean. If she didn’t, and I was still convinced it was mine, I might have gotten up and looked for a Bingo worker to come over and settle it. Yes, it would have resulted in a bit of a scene, but I could always apologize afterward if I was mistaken…and choke down my embarrassment if she produced a purple dauber from her pocket. The Department of Veterans Affairs ran into a big snag with a printing vendor and a lot of notification letters to veterans were delayed. But fear not — the VA is extending your response time. The Government Printing Office, which provides printing services via contracted vendors, couldn’t get out the notification letters dated from July 13, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2021. Some of those letters, which required a response from veterans, could have dealt with required exams for compensation and pension, or for making an election about services or benefits, or more. Typically, there are problems if you don’t respond in time. However, at this point, because of the delayed mailings, the VA isn’t going to terminate, reduce or deny services and benefits unless you’ve been contacted and there’s documentation about your right to respond; or the information it
The Afterparty — High-school reunions are often anxiety-inducing events, but rarely do they involve drama as serious as an actual murder. Little Boy Bingo Bonanza Bob calls for our local Bingo about once a month. This time he brought his fouryear-old son along and he entertained us throughout the evening. The balls bouncing in a glass-fronted container fascinated him. He helped his daddy call and was pleased with himself that he knew the numbers. He came to our table and made friends. “I can play Bingo,” he said, “I know my numbers.” “Do you know what a Bingo is?” asked Kate. “It’s just a line, isn’t it?” “Sometimes,” said Kate, “and
sometimes it is in a different shape. I could help you.” “Okay,” said the child, but as soon as the balls started bouncing, he was off to watch them, giggling with pleasure. “I think he’s a little young,” I said. “I don’t know,” said Kate. “Let’s try him out on something simple. How about the Bonanza?” “Might be okay,” I said. “That will be a simple blackout. He can play one of mine.” We arranged him at the table with a Bonanza card. This time the bouncing balls did not call him away as a different machine was used. He was thoroughly caught up in the game and was soon on for B4. “That’s how old I am,” he said. “I bet I get it.” He bounced on his chair and
he waited. But then the number came up and he jumped up and cheered. “Bingo, Daddy. I’ve got a Bingo.” He was not eligible for the win, as he had not purchased a buy-in. He was so ecstatic over winning that I could not even consider taking the card back and claiming it as my own. The whole Bingo Hall went into “pause” mode. The final decision rested with the caller, but the caller was the child’s father. The little boy looked hopeful. Bob just looked confused. “I don’t know what to do,” he said. “What do you think?” I thought furiously and came up with an idea. “Could we donate the winnings to the Children’s Hospital?” I asked. “That would seem to take care of who wins.” “That’s a great idea,” said Bob. “The winnings will be donated to Children’s Hospital.” K a t e unobtrusively pulled a tendollar bill from her purse. “This is for you,” she said to the expectant child. “For being such a good sport.” “Oh,” said the little boy. “Does this mean I can come back and play Bingo again?”

I’ve Got Mail First of all, thanks again to everyone who has written to me at my email addy bobonbingo@ earthlink.net. Eileen Reimers of Aberdeen, Maryland, wrote recently: “Bob, I remember a long time ago you recounted the history of Bingo. Can you remind us again?” Thanks, Eileen, here goes. Most historians think that what we know today as Bingo started about 500 years ago in Italy. At that time there was a nationwide lottery. It was called “Il Gioco del Lotto d’Italia.” By the 18th century (the 1700s) the concept had made its way to parts of Europe, including England and France. By this time, the idea of picking out numbered squares had changed from “a chance to make a lot of money” to simply a chance to have a lot of fun.
MARCH 2022 As European society crossed the Atlantic, so did the spread of the game. Over the years, some of the players of the game began to mark their squares with dried beans. Soon, everyone was calling the game “Beano.” Now, here is a name to remember: Edwin S. Lowe. He was a toy manufacturer who traveled the country peddling his ideas for toys. One night, with too much time on his hands, he stopped into a carnival on the outskirts of a small town in Georgia. He noticed that nearly all the booths and attractions had closed, all but one— a small stand where people were laughing and shouting. They were playing Beano. He took the concept back to his offices on Long Island and in late 1926 he began to produce a kind of “home version” of the game. At a dinner party, he had his guests play. When one woman won, she didn’t yell “Beano,” however, instead she yelled BINGO. The rest is history. Lowe began to merchandise the game, but soon found that his Bingo game had a major flaw: he had only twenty-four card combinations (this was before the age of computers). Soon after he began his merchandising efforts, he got a call from a Catholic priest on the east coast. The priest said that his parish was using Bingo as a fundraiser, but there were too few combinations to really make the evening exciting. Lowe understood religion, and the need

Lowe hired a mathematical expert and increased the combinations to 6,000. By the way, Lowe used his profits from Bingo to invent and sell another famous game: Yahtzee. So, now you know. Put in the dryer on low heat for 20 minutes, then remove and brush out the fur, if necessary, while still warm. * As tax time draws ever closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all tax-related forms and receipts in the envelope as they come in. This way, when you are ready to start your taxes, all items will be together and easy to find. * File this one under safety AND energy smarts: Clean the dryer vent after every load. Clean the dryer vent screen monthly with a gentle soap and water bath. Rinse well and dry thoroughly before inserting back into your dryer. * Store an apple or two with your potatoes to keep them from sprouting. Be sure to check them often.

Too Loud and Proud? Dear Guy, I have had an amazing run of good luck at Bingo recently. Unfortunately, I think it has caused a little friction between me and my Bingo buddies. At first I was all “Woo-hoo!” and “Eat my dust!” when I won two pots in one night. They laughed and were pretty cool about it. Then a couple weeks later I won a big pull tab and split another pot. I did my “Woo-hoo!” thing again, but this time they all kind of just half smiled and didn’t say too much. So now I’m stumped. Are they mad because I made too big of a deal about winning? Are they jealous because I won and they didn’t? Shouldn’t I be able to be as excited as I want to when I win at Bingo? Or am I supposed to be all ho-hum and pretend like it’s no big
Dear Big Bucks, It’s a tricky business when you hit a winning streak at Bingo and your buddies have to sit there and watch it happen. If these guys are truly buddies, then they should be happy you’re winning. If they act otherwise, it’s either because they may not be the friends you thought they were, or—and I’m leaning toward this second observation as the right one—you may have celebrated your winnings just a little too forcefully and ticked them off. Did you simply act happy at your good fortune, or did you rub their noses in it? Was it really just a generic “Woo-hoo!” or was it more of a “Woo-hoo, check it out losers, I rule and you drool!” If the latter was the case, then what you did was squander their opportunity to be happy for you by making them annoyed by your behavior. Put simply, you were a poor winner. In a group competition like Bingo, where there is typically only one winner, it’s very important to be gracious when you win. Remember, in the process of your winning, 150 other people lost. Of course, it’s OK to be excited— you know how funny it is to watch someone lose control of themselves and scream or laugh or do their version of the happy dance when something exciting happens to them. But you should also know how annoying it is when

someone turns a win into some kind of victory and everyone else’s defeat. I believe the phrase you used was “Eat my dust.” You’re basically kicking dirt in their faces and expecting them to enjoy it. Not gonna happen. And so, Big Bucks, my advice is to enjoy your winning streak, and encourage your Bingo buddies to enjoy it WITH you, by letting them be part of the excitement of your win and not victims of it. What's News in Nevada . . . Rockabilly Weekend 25th Anniversary The four-day Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly music festival returns to the Orleans on April 14-17. This year is its 25th anniversary, making it Vegas’ longest-running festival. It’s also the largest rockabilly event anywhere, featuring 80 bands (the Blasters, Rhythm Shakers, and Big Sandy & the Flyrite Boys headline), 30 DJs, a burlesque showcase and competition hosted by filmmaker John Waters, burlesque bingo, vintage fashion show, dance lessons and competition, tiki pool parties, swimsuit and pinup contests, 120 vendors, all-night record hops, and a classic-car show with 1,000 cars on display. Tickets start at $40 for single events and go up to $230 for the full four-day admission; they’re available now on the VLV website. Hawaiian Hits Big A Hawaii resident hit a Wheel of Fortune progressive jackpot for $1.1 million at the Fremont this past winter. She was staying at the California and switched casinos to change her luck. She’d been playing the $5 machine for about 10 minutes when her luck definitely changed. Please Don’t Sit on the Tongue The Kiss museum is set to open at the Rio this month. The museum, comprising “three tractor-trailer loads” of memorabilia collected by Kiss front man Gene Simmons, is an expansion of the Rio’s fiveyear-old glow-in-the-dark Kiss by Monster Mini Golf. Outdoor Dining at Oscar’s The Plaza has announced an expansion of Oscar’s Steakhouse, which last month celebrated its 10th anniversary in the iconic dome
on the second floor in front of the hotel. A new rooftop patio will be built next to Oscar’s Lounge that will seat up to 60 people who can order off the food and beverage menus. Construction is expected to begin sometime this spring and be completed by October; the restaurant will remain open during construction. In other Oscar’s news, a life-sized bronze statue of Goodman with Tony Spilotro has been installed at the entrance. The statue, titled Good Counsel, was donated by sculptor Brian Hanlon, who also created the statue of Jerry Tarkanian at the Thomas & Mack Center and former President Barack Obama at the Historic Westside Legacy Park. More About Martha’s Restaurant A few months ago, it was announced that Martha Stewart was opening a restaurant at Paris. And that was the extent of the info. Caesars Entertainment has recently released a few more details. The restaurant, described as Martha’s “first ever” (which regards the Martha Stewart Cafe in Manhattan’s West Chelsea neighborhood that ran for four years as less than a restaurant), will be called The Bedford, a “fully immersive concept designed to bring Martha’s famed country farmhouse in Bedford, New York, to life.” The 194-seat eatery, with an opening date in “the spring,” will serve “delicious seasonal dinner, weekend brunch, and holiday menus that feature exceptional quality and creativity sourced from local purveyors and Martha’s personal favorites.” So, we know the name, the size, the season of opening, and the buzzwords; now we’ll wait for the opening date, menu, and prices.

Mardi Gras in March For me, every Tuesday is Fat Tuesday. That’s when I blow whatever diet I started on Monday. —Anonymous March 1st is Fat Tuesday, aka Mardi Gras Day. That’s the day when we can eat all we want of everything and anything because the next day begins a long period of fasting for Christians during Lent. I do feel it necessary to insert a disclaimer here that I pretty much eat way too much of whatever, every day, but nonetheless, Fat Tuesday is my kind of day. In New Orleans, Fat Tuesday is celebrated in a big way, pun intended, with beads, parades, and rowdy revelers. In other words, laissez les bon temps rouler, let the good times roll. It is rumored that shop owners on Bourbon Street coat poles and columns with Vaseline to stop party goers from climbing them and injuring themselves or others. I have never been there during Mardi Gras since climbing greased poles is not my cup of tea, but we have visited numerous times otherwise. There is much to see and do, but the National WW2 Museum is one of the favorites of my husband and me. It features first person oral histories and artifacts that recount the experiences of those who sacrificed so much to make sure our freedoms were secured. Louisiana both for charity and for commercial purposes. If you have transportation while you’re in New Orleans, check out Gretna Bingo Palace in Gretna, about five miles from New Orleans. Large jackpots are offered and every session features a payout of $4,500. There are also so-called super games held monthly with total giveaways of as much as $25,000. Their website is gretabingopalace.com. This location also has a spacious enclosed non-smoking area; always a bonus in my opinion. Another option is to play bingo online as it’s legal in this state. You can relax in a nice hotel room and play bingo on your laptop, tablet, or phone. One of the more popular on-line sites is called Bingo Billy. Lastly, I can’t write a column about New Orleans without mentioning Harrah’s Casino. It has 3,800 gaming machines and 105 gaming tables. It is non-smoking, but has three climate-controlled smoking courtyards. Their hotel offers newly renovated rooms that border the popular Fulton Street with its trendy nightspots, shopping, and restaurants. The French Quarter is less than half a mile away; well within walking distance for those who are physically fit. About ninety miles east of New Orleans is Biloxi, Mississippi, another gambling mecca. Robert and I enjoy its smaller casino ambiance. That means my hubby can easily find me and drag me kicking and screaming to our room although I try to hide in a dark corner, just me and my video poker machine. We eat at the Mix and Mingle restaurant as well as at another venue called The Blind Tiger. It was here in Biloxi that I qualified for the Harrah’s Millionaire Slot Tournament held in Atlantic City last November. Suffice it to say, I am not a millionaire, but hey, I had a shot at it. Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you.
