Historically, Grand Turk is believed by some to be the landfall island of Christopher Columbus during his 15th-century discovery of the New World. Today, Grand Turk is a tropical island gem visited by tourists from around the globe. The island offers many activities. Here is just a sample: Shopping: The ship docks at the Grand Turk Carnival Cruise Terminal which includes a tourism village packed with shops and restaurants, one of the largest pools in the Caribbean, and an 800 ft. span of beach. There are also plenty of shopping opportunities in the town itself. Scuba Diving: Grand Turk has one of the most breathtaking ocean biosystems in the world. Lush corals, diverse marine life and water visibility to depths of more than 100 feet lure swimmers and divers from around the world. Amazing diving can be found after a 10-minute boat ride from the beach.
You can also dive or snorkel at the many nearby uninhabited cays. Horseback Riding: Enjoy a leisurely horseback ride along the beach while taking in the views of the crystal blue Atlantic. Bingo cards and splattered with sequins and glitter, they certainly seem to. And how can a loving grandparent not wear such a gift from a wide-eyed grandchild, if only to be able to boast to their friends about what wonderful grandchildren they have? —Aunt Bingo
Outfitted for Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo, I was in Bingo the other night and was struck by how many players were wearing Bingo “outfits” and not just the usual Bingo sweatshirts, but sweaters, scarves, hats, purses, you name it. For a moment I thought a Bingo clothing factory must have exploded somewhere and everything had landed in this one Bingo hall! What’s going on? James, Texas, via e-mail Dear James, I suspect what you are seeing is all the holiday gifts these players received and are now happily wearing to Bingo. And trust me, this scene is not just playing out at your Bingo hall, but at halls and casinos throughout North America. As a writer of a Bingo column and a Bingo player myself, I know that come Christmas I am guaranteed to receive at least one (and usually several) Bingo-related presents. While I am not quite sure why people assume that Bingo players love oversized sweatshirts decorated with giant silk-screened
Dear Aunt Bingo, I hear an awful lot of people say that they win more money at Bingo and casino games than they lose. This is kind of hard to believe when you see hundreds of people playing and only of handful of them are winners. Don’t you think that a lot of them are just telling fibs? Suspicious in Colorado, via e-mail Dear Suspicious, There are a number of answers to your question. The first is, as you say, these folks are simply not telling the truth, which is, of course, a possibility. But they may be fibbing for one of two reasons: either it is intentional, or they honestly believe they are ahead of the game whether they really are or not. There is also the possibility that the people who have had a losing year simply keep quiet about it, while the winners can’t help but brag—which is why you get the impression that “everyone” is saying they are winners. Keep in mind, too, there is a LOT of money to be won in Bingo halls and on casino gaming floors. With Bingo alone, if you go once a week, that’s 52 weeks of opportunities to win. Go three times a week and that climbs to 156 opportunities. If you play 10 games at each of those 156 outings, that’s 1,560 chances. And if you play 10 cards during each of those 10 games at all 156 of those trips to the Bingo hall, that’s 15,600 chances to win— not including pull tabs and other Bingo hall extras. —Aunt Bingo

Get the VA Welcome Kit It doesn’t matter if you’ve been out for years or are just now separating from the service, the Department of Veterans Affairs has a gift for you: the VA Welcome Kit. It’s something every veteran needs to have on hand for current information you need now or things that can come up over the years. It’s all about your VA benefits and the services it offers for the veteran, families, survivors and caregivers. Each kit has over a dozen quick-start guides for a wide array of topics, including health services for women, accessing urgent care, mental health services, getting caregiver benefits, home loans, explanation of disability ratings, applying for burial in a VA cemetery and getting educational benefits. They give step-by-step instructions, as well as listing the documents

Shame, shame, shame? A few years back on Facebook, I outed myself for a movie faux pas — I had never seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It’s one of those films that are quoted and referenced in all manner of ways, assuming much of the time that it’s been universally viewed. And it turns out there are a great many of these films and just as many people out there who have never seen them — in the dark about their plots, not in on the joke and never intending to be. My post became a completely unofficial survey, with several titles popping up again and again. Have you seen them? What’s your guilty little movie secret? Star Wars — George Lucas’ space saga has many chapters, and very opinionated fans. There are those who have seen the first three films from 1977-1983 (episodes 4, 5 and 6), but not the prequel trilogy from 1999-2005 (episodes 1, 2 and 3). Or those who have seen 1-6 (all by Lucas), but not the subsequent trilogy

I give this kit an A grade. The VA put a lot of thought into it, and it’s well done. Take a look. So far there have been over 1 million downloads. Suggestion: Print it out (42 pages) and put it in a folder so it’s handy. As a final note: Are you still doing the full minute hand washing? Never mind the 20 second wash, go for the full minute. Keep your nails short and scrubbed. Wash often. It doesn’t matter that the vaccine is now being given. Don’t slack off. For a long time we’ll still need to do the distancing and mask wearing... and hand washing.

So, too, did several people in my survey, who admitted that an almost four-hour running time was no enticement to view this 1939 classic. The Goonies — This mid-’80s adventure starring Sean Astin as a little kid who chases the legend of One-Eyed Willie was pure gold to me, but not to many of my younger friends, who admit to not having made time to “Never Say Die!” The Godfather — Marlon Brando and Al Pacino shepherd the Corleone family through good times and bad, but you have to see it to know what offer the Don makes that can’t be refused or what it means when someone “sleeps with the fishes.” The Wizard of Oz — “Follow the yellow brick road” to a place that’s “not in Kansas anymore.” Many of my respondents admitted that even if they hadn’t seen the film start to finish, they feel like they’ve seen it as ubiquitously as the film is referenced. The Sound of Music — Julie Andrews plays Maria, governess to seven children, who sparks a love of music and joy that lead to a family band. Today’s teenyboppers may be surprised to find that one of this musical’s numbers is the source of Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” riff. Pulp Fiction — Quentin Tarantino turned the moviemaking industry on its head with this super-cool and eminently quotable flick that weaves together the stories of criminals and criminal adjacents.

Hot Seat Dean Sometimes, when I sit quietly before a Bingo session begins, I think about what an excellent place the Bingo purveyors provide. It is always warm in winter and pleasantly cool in summer. The tables are plentiful, the chairs comfortable, the surroundings agreeable. The staff is unfailingly friendly and usually the food is enjoyable. It’s always a small thrill to risk a little and all in all, it is a fine way to spend some time with friendly, like-minded people. However, there are people who do not find it so. Dean became friendly with us, but never lost his hostility toward “the powers that be,” “those in charge” and the “unfriendly fates” guiding our destiny. Dean is bossy at any opportunity and is very likely to tell the caller what she did wrong or to suggest a different game. So, we were delighted when he was asked to

MARCH 2021 fill in for the regular caller one night. Dean is better at telling others what to do than doing it himself. He was soon experiencing the torment of doing everything correctly and quickly. Right away he put G-51 into the slot for G-52 and had a very difficult time getting the ball out and into the right niche. He was embarrassed to appear inept, fumbled along and appeared hassled. Several times he called Ns when none were needed for the game, and a wag suggested he start a special jar for his mistakes. He confessed to not understanding a four corners Bingo. He was becoming increasingly unpopular. When he dropped the balls after an on-the-way game before a blackout, I thought he had reached his all-time low, but his worst mistake was not hearing a Bingo called. Others heard it and he made the error of listening to the opinion of the crowd. He had already called another number and there was a second Bingo on that number. Dean had to make a judgment call. He knew he would offend someone and did not know which way to go. He ended by deciding to allow both wins, which pleased nobody. Then he tried to justify himself, leading to greater argument. It looked as if a real rhubarb was developing when Dean got very adamant and said the two winners would split the prize and that was an end to it.
“Is that even legal?” asked Kate. I looked at Dean. His face was red, and he was not his same old cold, clear and dominating self. I felt a bit sorry for the man even though I still thought him a pain. After the session was over, he came up to Kate and me to discuss his stressful evening. “I didn’t realize calling was so difficult,” he said. “You have to be on top of everything all the time.” “Maybe you won’t be so quick to criticize now,” observed Kate. “You made practically every mistake in the book.” “Oh, I don’t know,” said Dean, “I still think I did better than a lot of them and I didn’t even get paid.”

In January’s column I mentioned that after decades of living on both the east and west coast—but not at the same time—I returned to the part of southern Indiana where I was born and spent the first thirty years of my life. I have made a lot of quiet drives around my old hometown, past the house where I grew up, past all the things that I remember. And, one of the best and most-bittersweet moments was again playing Bingo in the hall where I was introduced to the game when I was ten. As I have reported before, the building where I went to the first four grades of school was actually an old convent. It had been about to fall down since 1900. The new grade school that replaced it had a full cafeteria in a spacious basement. The basement formed a kind of hall where a lot of meetings have taken place over the years. And, in the 1980s, during the renovation of the nearby church, Sunday masses were held there. Something else has been held there since Day One…Bingo. It was in that hall that as a tenyear-old boy, my grandmother
and mother first took me to Bingo. We didn’t have daubers back then or tear-off disposable sheets of Bingo cards. We used one card and marked it with CORN. Don’t laugh. Corn is cheap and in my part of southern Indiana it’s everywhere…even in this column. Every time I have gone home over the past years I have gone there to play Bingo. I sit in the same area where my grandmother and my mother and I sat, all those decades ago. I can still hear my grandmother ALMOST utter a profanity when she didn’t win. I can see my mother’s smile when anyone yelled, BINGO! It didn’t matter to her if she won or lost. Maybe that is why I feel that way. I love winning, don’t get me wrong, but, I still love hearing OTHERS yell, Bingo! They don’t use corn and hard cards anymore. There are now sheets of Bingo cards and there is a tote-board at the front and a huge elevated area for the callers. But, it’s still old-fashioned BINGO. It’s still old people and young people gathered together to play a game that is very much a part of all of us. My grandmother and mom are long gone, but Bingo is still there. The hall is still there. It smells the same. It looks the same. Thank God some things never change. So, remember, down some side street is a Bingo hall. Inside it are nice people. Some are there to win. Blackjack True and False Quiz How much do you really know about blackjack? Try answering these true/false questions and find out. Blackjack is blackjack. It’s the same game played everywhere. True or false. False. The playing rules are often different from one casino to the next and even within the same casino. Some tables use single decks, others use 2 to 8 decks of cards. In some games the dealers must stand on soft 17, in others they hit. Some games allow the players to surrender and double down after pair splitting, and others do not. There are other rules, some which favor the casino more than the player and vice versa. The point is that not all blackjack games are the same. The number of decks of cards being

MARCH 2021 used and the rules determine how much of an edge the casino has. The third base player can cause other players to lose if he makes a bad play. True or false. False. Dumb plays by third base players have just as much chance of “helping” everyone at the table as “hurting” everyone. While dumb plays can and usually do upset the smart players, they have no longterm effect on a player’s expected outcome. Never hit a 12 against a dealer’s 2 or 3 upcard because you will invariably draw a 10 or picture card and bust. True or false. False. If you hit you will win 37% of the time and lose 63%. If you stand because you are afraid to bust you will win 35% of the time and lose 65%. It’s much better to win 37% of the hands than 35% of them, therefore, even though a 12 is a lousy hand, you’ll win more and lose less in the long run when you hit. I just lost 5 hands in a row so I’m due to win. True or false. False. The cards don’t care that you lost the previous five hands. The chance of you winning the sixth hand is completely independent of whether you won, lost or tied the previous 5 hands. Do not bet based on the misconception you are due to win. The object of blackjack is to get as close as possible to 21. True or false. False. The objective is to beat the dealer by either 1) having your hand total higher than the dealer’s hand or 2) not busting or going over 21 when the dealer busts.
You will win 50% of the hands at blackjack. True or false. False. On average you will win 43%, lose 48% and tie 9%. If you discount ties, you will win on average 47% of your hands and lose 53%. I can overcome the casino’s edge in blackjack by using a progressive betting system. True or false. False. Progressive betting systems will not alter your long-term expectations in blackjack. Blackjack games that pay 6 to 5 are a rip off. The house edge is about 800% greater than an equivalent game that pays 3 to 2. Stay away from any blackjack game that pays 6 to 5 on blackjacks. The casino has the edge in blackjack because players go first and if they bust they automatically lose. True or false. True. That’s why basic strategy tells us to stand on small totals and not risk busting when the dealer shows a small card and a higher probability of busting. If you had trouble getting the right answers, you may want to invest in a good blackjack book before you risk any money playing the game.

Goofing Off Along with voting, jury duty, and paying taxes, goofing off is one of the central obligations of American citizenship. —Sarah Vowell (greatsayings.net) Ancient English called the month of March HLYD MONATH, the stormy month. While severe weather can occur any time, March is typically when arctic fronts roar across the northern parts of the U.S. bringing snow and ice storms. The old saying, in like a lion and out like a lamb, or vice versa came about because March straddles winter and spring bringing a mix of nice and nasty weather in no particular order. Or as my old granny used to say, March blows the stink of winter away. Amen to that. Anyway, once again, t’is time to wear green and orange according to the years old tradition of honoring all things Irish on March 17th. As my husband preaches, dress in green if you’re Irish Catholic or orange if you’re Protestant Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Or as I say, wear both, drink green beer, eat Irish stew, and be happy we’ve still around to celebrate. And speaking of green beer, if you’re lucky enough to be visiting Ireland on St Patrick’s Day, few of their bars serve green beer. In fact, until the late 70s, it was illegal for pubs in Ireland to even be open because
March 17th was considered a religious holiday. As I write this column, I’m hoping most hometown bingos are back in business. Therefore, here are a few Irish superstitions to bring you good luck. If a black cat crosses your path, it portends bad luck. But, according to the Irish you can change bad luck into good by making a triangle with your thumbs and pointer fingers and spitting in the general direction of the cat. Try to miss the cat if it’s still around because some cats might take offense at your action and retaliate. Beware of a ticked off cat’s claws. Next, if you find a horseshoe, nail it to your door. Buying yourself a horseshoe or receiving one as a gift will not work as good luck comes only if the horseshoe is found by you. If you find a four-leaf clover, expect good luck; but keep the clover a secret. The luck will last as long as you don’t show the clover to anyone. Lastly, on March 17th, go to bingo and on the way throw a shoe out your car window. This will summon good luck and cast away the bad. Hmmm-m. If you do this, take care not to hit anyone as your good luck might be offset with a lawsuit. Not good for you or the person who was hit with your shoe. Another holiday this month that bears mentioning is Monday, March 22. It’s National Goof Off Day, not that I need a specific day to goof off. I’m good at that every day since I retired. I have no problem sitting on my butt, binge watching serial killer movies, and sipping the beverage of my choice. The movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off might have been the impetus for this holiday, or maybe not. No one cares as it’s a day to kick back with no worries about doing something useful. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted. Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms
that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing. Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received. Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize. Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month's contest. Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing. By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize. The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check. Please, don't call the Bingo Bugle office to find out who the winner is, we won't tell you. And, if it is you, you will be disqualified.
