Her loving fiance Daniel, who is a hard working business owner, her three great children, her future father-in-law Mike, other family members and friends are all a source of joy for her. Stephanie has been playing Bingo for at least 5 years. in-laws Mike and Brenda Albert introduced her to the game and she’s been an avid player ever since. Sadly, Brenda died back in June of 2020. Online Cliques Dear Aunt Bingo, The management of some of the online Bingo games let certain people be rude and they act like they own the site. They get their little crew together and act like children! I feel like a coward, as the last time I stood up for myself I got banned for a week, while they continue to play as usual. I had some great comebacks to them, but not over the line to get myself banned. They are just so rude. Sweet Teresa, via e-mail Dear Teresa, Who would have guessed that something as anonymous as

online Bingo would turn out to have many of the same cliquey, insider/ outsider issues as traditional Bingo game. But I’ve heard from many readers just like you that this is exactly the case. What’s happening is that many online Bingo games have individual “hosts” who develop a following of players who seek each other out to play together, chat, and enjoy each other’s company. In some cases, however, the result has been that some of these Bingo players have become territorial about their rooms and will gang up on a player who says or does something that the group does not like. It’s the downfall of that anonymity—they can sit safely in their homes and go after someone they feel is unwelcome, and there isn’t much the “victim” of the attack can do about it. The upside of all this is that there are many Bingo rooms on these sites, and many sites to choose from. Can VA Puppy Program Help Combat PTSD? The Department of Veterans Affairs has published its plan for starting up a pilot program for the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers for Veterans Therapy Act. In the PAWS Act, the VA will do a five-year pilot program to train dogs as a means of assisting veterans with PTSD, with the veterans doing the training. Five VA medical centers will be part of the pilot program: San Antonio; West Palm Beach, Florida; Anchorage; Asheville, North Carolina; and Palo Alto, California. There are three requirements for veterans to be eligible to join the pilot program: be enrolled in VA health care, be diagnosed with PTSD and get a recommendation from a VA mental health-care provider. Veterans getting care from a nonVA provider will need to contact the VA facility to get authorization

The Batman (PG-13) — It’s finally time to watch this long-awaited film at home! Directed by Matt Reeves, the legendary superhero Batman is darkly portrayed by Robert Pattinson in a tone that’s never been seen before. Batman’s gloom extends to his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, whose persona is far from the suave billionaire we’ve come to know in other films. Bruce has outcasted himself, pouring every fiber into being the Batman, and the heaviness weighs him down greatly. Only when a series of murders, committed by the morbidly comical Riddler, start to unravel the pent-up pain and trauma long hidden within Bruce does the Batman earn the title of being a superhero. Zoe Kravitz stars opposite Pattinson as the alluring Selina Kyle, who doubles as Catwoman. (HBO Max) Crush (PG-13) — High-school student Paige (Rowan Blanchard) dreams of getting into art school, but finds she’s lacking the inspiration to make something worthy of getting accepted. Those closest to her advise her to loosen

for the non-VA care and ask about taking part in the pilot. Also, the veteran must have had an appointment for some type of care within 3 months of asking to join the program, and then continue with appointments every 3 months. The VA would be required to provide the dogs to veterans with mental illnesses who do not have mobility problems with training provided by certified trainers. Veterans would not be allowed to be around the dogs unless the trainer is present. At the end of training, the veteran can adopt the dog if the trainer believes it’s in the veteran’s best interest, and additional training will continue for the life of the dog. However, some of the training involves getting a dog ready to be a service animal for someone else, so a veteran might work with multiple dogs. (Hulu) Silverton Siege (TV-MA) — Based on true events that occurred in South Africa in 1980, this nailbiting action thriller focuses on three anti-apartheid freedom fighters whose mission ends in failure, which forces them into the standoff of their lives. The fighters enter a bank and keep several hostages, but realize once they’re in the standoff that it will only yield two results for them: prison or death. So, they decide to use this highrisk situation as an opportunity for the launch of a global movement. The three fighters agree to release the hostages and end the standoff in exchange for the release of antiapartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela, who is being held in prison. (Netflix)

Kid Bingo is a Blast Our local Bingo hall saves one day of the late spring for kids. They come in a group of about thirty from the elementary school accompanied by five mothers to keep the peace. We were asked to attend to help with the play and prize distribution. The kids, who are nine and ten, cannot play for money, but they do get nice prizes such as movie tickets, free meals, and store gift certificates. They are as excited as if their prizes were in the millions. We had arranged for the balloon lady to come also and each of the kids got to choose a balloon with a Bingo pattern imprinted on it. If any of the kids won with the pattern they had selected they got a double prize. The games were kept relatively simple, such as regular Bingo, chevron or four corners, but I think those kids could have figured out the most complicated of patterns.

JUNE 2022 When one of them was on the excitement and encouragement ran rampant. I especially liked the way they gave encouragement to each other or to someone who didn’t win anything last time. We used our supply of hard cards and each child got two. They could swap with each other or with the reserve supply, but no games were held up for the swapping and the kids quickly learned to be ready. Bryan, a Downs Syndrome child, was in the group this year and I had thought he would require a lot of supervision. This, however, proved not to be true as he was very selfsufficient. He also seemed to help quiet the noisy, excited children while they unobtrusively kept an eye on his cards and made sure he didn’t miss any numbers. Marva, a bright-eyed beauty with carroty red hair was the first child to have a chance of winning with her balloon imprinted pattern. She had chosen a diagonal and bounced on her chair with excitement as each number was called. At last her number was called and she won not one, but two free meals at the local Mexican restaurant. Several of her table mates volunteered to go to dinner with her, but she just grinned and said we’d have to wait and see. We had a few bad moments while Josh crammed too big a bite of hot dog into his mouth, choked and coughed it into his hand. Ben, a small, dark-eyed charmer was the only one in the group to win twice and he was loudly

berated for his stupid luck. “I’m always lucky,” he told me with a heart-melting smile. “I won a diving contest at camp last month and Mom says she’s maybe gonna let me pick her lotto numbers.” When Bryan got “on” for a double Hollywood, the whole room rooted for him. He said, “I just need G-50. That’s how old my Dad is and it’s my best number.” We all rooted for him and when it came up, there were shouts of joy. I happened to be looking at Marva’s cards when Bryan won and noticed she had been “on” for the same number. She quietly cleared her card without claiming a win, then looked up to see me watching. “I already won,” she said. “Nobody needs to be greedy.”

This month, we start with a question: what do all these famous people have in common: Prince William, the Queen, rocker Robbie Williams, actors Russell Crowe and Catherine ZetaJones? Well, they all love to play Bingo and are proud to tell you so. I don’t know about you, but when I think of Bingo I think of wonderful, ordinary people having fun. I don’t usually think of Prince William sitting down for a session of number-calling. I

found out about this when Diane E., of Zanesville, Ohio, wrote to bobonbingo@earthlink.net: “Hey, Bob,” she writes. “I can’t believe what I read the other day while standing in line at the grocery. One of the tabloids had a big article about the number of celebrities who enjoy an occasional game of Bingo. “The prince went to one of London’s most-famous Bingo halls and never won a game. But he smiled throughout the evening. So, Bob, if Bingo is good enough for Prince William, it’s good enough for me!” For too many people, the image of Bingo is of an OLD FOLKS GAME. Well, in some ways it is. Of course, none of us–in my age group–can go out and play Rugby and tackle Extreme Skateboarding…so, Bingo suits me fine. Oh, and one other thing. I got an e-mail from Mary Grace, of Garden

I prefer more quiet surroundings. Thanks, Mary Grace.” By the way, she works in a library. Let’s wrap up with a poem sent in by Donnie E, of Lockport, New York. He writes: “Bob, I’m not much of a poet, but see if you like it: There’s a hall I love to go to where good friends fill the chairs. We meet there every Thursday and throw away our cares. Bob Adams calls the numbers and he’s just at the right speed. But he has the knack of calling numbers I simply never need. Twas G-44 I wanted, to complete my cover-all. And as the game progressed great excitement filled the hall. Then Bob, he called my number… he called G-44. I shouted out my BINGO…and so did 30 more! Bob Adams smiled and took a pen to that 31-way split. My money came, I counted it…three dollars…that was it. But, that’s OK with me, I say…my face in a great big grin. I came here just to have some fun and didn’t plan to win.”

Proper Blackjack Conduct The casino game of blackjack has its proper procedures and codes of conduct. The procedures are essential to ensure the security and integrity of the game. The codes of conduct encompass the playing etiquette, so you don’t attract the ire of your fellow players, or the dealer. Here are some common blunders made by players; now, don’t you make them. --Handing money directly to the dealer. All cash transactions must be visible to the security cameras, so always place your cash on the layout outside of your betting spot, and then tell the dealer what denomination chips you want. --Touching the cards when they are dealt face up. When four or more decks of cards are used, they are dealt face up to each player from a dealing shoe. The reason the cards are dealt face up is two-fold. First, it eliminates the potential for player cheating (by either marking or switching the cards), and secondly, it speeds up the game, because the dealer can quickly announce the total of each player’s hand. There is no reason to touch the cards, so don’t do it. --Holding the cards with two hands. In games where the cards are dealt face down (usually single- and two-deck games), pick the cards up with one hand please, not two. --Removing the cards from the table. Your cards must always be in full view of the dealer and the security cameras. Therefore, you should never, for example, hold them in your lap. --Placing objects on the table. Purses, wallets, bags, and other items should be placed on your

JUNE 2022 person or next to you (except handbags, which should be held in the lap). It’s OK to have a drink on the table but use the drink holders provided by the casino to avoid spilling anything on the layout. --Telling the dealer that you want a “hit.” Saying, “Hit me” might be OK when you play blackjack with friends back home, but in the casinos, it won’t fly. For security reasons, you must always use hand signals to signify whether you want to hit or stand. --Touching your chips after you’ve made your bet and the cards are dealt. Your original bet must stay on the layout untouched until it either wins, loses, or ties. Once the dealer starts dealing the cards, that’s your cue to not touch your wager. --Placing a higher denomination chip on top of a lower denomination chip in your betting spot. If you are wagering two or more different denomination chips, always place the higher denomination chip on the bottom of the stack. --Taking your bad luck out on the dealer or fellow players. They are not the reason why you are losing; most likely it’s just a bad run of cards, which happens to all blackjack players. --Telling your fellow players how to play their hands. It’s their money and they have the right to play their hand any way they want to. However, if a fellow player asks you for advice, then it’s OK to offer it. --Sitting down and making a bet in the middle of a shoe. In some casinos, this is forbidden and there will be a “No Mid-Shoe Entry” sign posted on the table. If you are not sure, ask the dealer. --Asking arrogantly for a comp. While playing recently, I overheard a fellow player, after less than 30 minutes of play, say to the floor supervisor, “Can you gimme a comp for four to the buffet.” This isn’t the way to ask for a comp. First off, comps are not a God-given right to players. You must earn a comp by meeting a casino’s play requirements (average bet and time of play). Check with a casino host or the Marketing Department to obtain this information, and then only after you’ve met their play requirements, ask the floor supervisor, “Have I played enough for a dinner comp?” You’ll be surprised how often you’ll receive a no-hassle comp when you politely ask for one.

Interestingly, the top five involved only three performers, with Elton John occupying rankings 5 and 3 and Celine Dion taking numbers 1 and 2. Over the seven years of his “Million Dollar Piano” residency (2011-2018), Elton grossed $131.2 million, while over the five years of his “Red Piano” stint (2004-2009), it was $166.4 million. “Celine,” which ran from 2011 to 2019, earned $292.2 million, while appropriately, the original “A New Day” (20032007), which launched all the residencies that followed, took in $385.1 million. It’s all I could think about on my jog to Dunkin’ Donuts. — Jimmy Fallon Do you have a choice between small hometown Bingo and much larger ones, and if so, which do you prefer? It’s a great feeling to walk into a familiar Bingo hall and be greeted by name. You know their routine, have a favorite seat, arrive early, indulge at the snack bar. It used to be that way in my hometown. I could play every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Sadly, those days are over and currently there are just two weekly games near me. The payouts aren’t great compared to the cost of play, so Robert and I have been driving thirty miles away to a larger town that has numerous Bingo choices, our current favorite being USEP Bingo, Reynoldsburg. We love the fact that they play on three days at 11a.m. since oldies like us prefer not to drive at night. Besides great games, it has coney dogs, doughnuts, and popcorn which maybe aren’t so great for our aging bodies. As I always say though, the women on the Titanic missed out on dessert, so go for it. I often mention in this column my long losing streaks and I’m elated to reveal that the last time we attended USEP Bingo, I actually

And speaking of doughnuts, June 1st is National Doughnut Day. This hole-iest of sweet treat days was started in 1938 to honor the Salvation Army Doughnut Dollies of WW1 who distributed doughnuts to soldiers. Sadly, I have to let you know that June 21st is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. After that, daylight and sunshine will be lessening as autumn approaches, followed by the dark days of winter. I don’t know about you, but sunshine makes me feel better and energizes me to be out and about in our community. Now, if you live at the North Pole, June 21st will be a blessing as the sun does not set there on that day, meaning twentyfour hours of sunlight. However, don’t try nude sunbathing as you will freeze your toenails, tonsils, tootsie, and every other body part because the average temp in Alaska is 4 degrees above zero. What’s Bingo like in Alaska? Casinos and slots are not permitted, also gasp, no video poker, be still my heart. However, Bingo and pull tabs are legal for charitable causes if you’re 19-years-old for Bingo or age 21 to buy pull tabs. Prizes may not exceed $20,000 a month or $240,000 a year. Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted. Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing. Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received. Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize. Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month’s contest. Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing. By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize. The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.
