We are happy to report that Jayne Zaleski, a familiar face at Knights of Columbus Council 1709 at 732 Badger Avenue in South Milwaukee, is our featured winner of the Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes.

The Bingo Bugle Crew was happy to be back on the beat at the Knights of Columbus to record the presentation. Conrad Thill (Knights of Columbus Bingo Manager) awarded the Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes check to Jayne. It was fun to be there because the volunteers at the KC hall are top notch when it comes to serving their customers and making them feel right at home. The Ladies Auxiliary serves fine food from the Bingo Kitchen at great prices. We can’t figure out how they do it and their desserts are delicious.

We asked Conrad Thill, the Knights of Columbus Bingo Administrator to fill us in about the Knights.

He said, “The Knights of Columbus is one of the finest organizations I have ever been affiliated with.

We volunteer our time and efforts to help those less fortunate. Our signature fund raising event is the Tootsie Roll Patrol. All of the money collected goes to help fund educational programs for intellectually challenged individuals, especially those who are students in our local schools.

Another important fundraiser is Life Savers for Life. We are unapologetically Pro Life. We help Vet-

I have played Bingo there for quite some time. I pick up the Bingo Bugle every month, not just for all the information it holds, but to check to see who won the Monthly Cash Contest Drawing. Maybe somebody I know. In May’s Bingo Bugle to my surprise was me. I know of some people that say,” I don’t fill those forms out, I never win.”

Well I just tell them, if you don’t play, you can’t win!!!

They will have Bands, Food, Beer, Soda, a HUGE Rummage Sale and more FUN than you can shake a stick at. It is a Mission Festival with a real country feel. Don’t miss this festival! You can read all about it in their ad on Page 12 of this Bingo Bugle Newspaper.

You may play Bingo at The Polish Community Center. Don’t miss their annual event on Milwaukee’s Lake Front at Henry Meier Festival Park. Polish Fest 2018 will take place June 15 - 17. Music, ethnic food, cultural exploration, Polish Dogs, beautiful arts and crafts and a lot more are all on tap at Polish Fest. Don’t miss it.

Later this summer is St. Sava’s Annual Servian Days Festival August 24 - 26 at 3201 S. 51st St. (51st and Oklahoma).

Now, every week, either I or another worker steps in to help this lady play. By the way, I found out her name is Elizabeth, she’s 91 years old, she is a retired high school math teacher, and she bakes killer macaroons.

Bingo Hall Hero Dear Aunt Bingo: There is an elderly woman who plays Bingo at a Bingo game where I volunteer. She has been coming here for years because the Bingo is a short walking distance from her home and she has known many friends here over the years.

My guess was that she was in her late 80s or maybe even older.

Due to her advanced age, this past year she had really begun to struggle to play Bingo—the caller, the monitors, the paper, everything seemed to be giving her trouble.

Unintentionally, she started to disrupt the games by calling out when she didn’t hear a number or had some other difficulty. This became bothersome for a growing number of players who felt, understandably, that this lady’s behavior was intruding more and more on their wish to have an enjoyable evening of Bingo.

There were a number of conversations between our manager, some workers and some players on what to do about this woman. Finally, one night I saw firsthand what had been decided: The manager met the woman at the front door, basically told her that Bingo was closed to her, and sent her on her way.

It broke my heart. All I could think was that this lady, who was probably already isolated, was losing yet another opportunity for social interaction. I ran over to the manager and asked if it was OK for me to sit with the lady and help her play. His relieved smile told me he felt just as bad about sending the lady away as I did witnessing it. He agreed to give it a try.

I ran outside and invited the lady back. Without the slightest hint of anger or hurt feelings, she thanked me, returned to the Bingo hall, bought her Bingo paper and settled into a seat. When Bingo started, I took the seat next to her and told her I’d sit with her to help with any difficulties.

It worked like a charm. At first, whenever she missed hearing a number, she would lean in and quietly ask me what it was and I’d tell her. Eventually I stopped waiting for her to ask and simply repeated each number to her as it was called. It was the only help she needed. She was quite able to search and daub the correct numbers on her own.

There was also an unexpected side benefit to helping the woman play. I received a lot of smiles from appreciative players, a few pats on the back, and someone even brought me a soda. I couldn’t get over how many people my small deed was affecting.

Dear WT: Congratulations! You are my new favorite person!

Stepping in to help Elizabeth was such kind gesture. Thank heavens you were at the right place at the right time to witness this wrong of sending her away and make it right. Plus, it was so touching to see the positive effect your kindness had on so many people around you. Hopefully, they all paid it forward with good deeds of their own.

Research has shown that Bingo is great for seniors not only for socialization but also for enhancing hand-eye coordination, boosting cognitive abilities, accelerating healing and recuperation, and improving overall physical health.

Bingo sponsors would be smart to market their games to seniors for all these reasons, and to have folks like you on hand to assist players like Elizabeth who want to play Bingo, are able to do so, but have some challenge—such as hearing the caller clearly or seeing the ball monitors—that requires minor assistance.

Again, kudos for stepping up and being a Bingo hall super hero!

* Here’s fun for kids. Secure slivers of bar soap in a small mesh bag (we use a cut piece of the bag onions come in). Tie it to the bath tap, and when you draw a bath, let the water run over the soap. It’s a bubble bath! * Don’t throw toads out of your garden! There’s hardly a better pest-control method than these good old-fashioned bug eaters.

Toads can eat hundreds of bugs a week, and they don’t cost a dime.

They are a gardener’s good luck! * Peeling a boiled potato? Drop it quickly in an ice bath, and the skin may just slip right off! If you prep peeled potatoes, be sure to keep them submerged in water and add a tablespoon of white vinegar to keep them from browning. * It’s hard to measure out sticky substances like honey or molasses when you’re using a measuring cup. They cling to the inside, and you’re never sure that you added the right amount. The next time you’re cooking with something sticky, spray the inside of the measuring cup with cooking oil. It will slide right out.

Vets Helping Vets If you’re a veteran and you’re doing OK, consider stepping up to help other veterans who aren’t.

There are quite a few ways you can help. Here are some ideas to get you started: * Do a fundraiser to send a few veterans on vacation. There are a number of resorts where vets and their families can stay for free, but the airfare to get there isn’t covered. * Take over the yardwork this summer for a disabled veteran.

Ask if anything else is needed.

Paint the porch? Lay a new kitchen floor? Gather other veterans with skills to do that, and get it done. * Don’t leave the kids out. If one needs new soccer cleats or rides to practice, ask the parents if you can make that happen. * At the next local job fair, see if

your company can set up a booth dedicated to veterans. * Volunteer at a few Stand Downs in your area. Same goes for any local veterans wheelchair, adaptive sports or senior games. * Start now to collect toys for children of veterans for the holiday season. Then take a veteran’s family under your wing and have your company or church group sponsor them with food and gifts. * Can you drive a vet getting treatment to the nearest veterans medical center? Call Volunteer Services at the center and ask if you can help.

If you’re not in a veterans group such as American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars because there’s no group near you, go online and search “veterans helping veterans.” You’ll find something you can do by yourself or with a few other veteran buddies. love story, one part celebration of triumphing over our differences, with a sprinkling of super-cute song and dance numbers that will have you bopping along.

THE

HOSTILES (R) — It’s 1892, and an unsympathetic Army captain (Christian Bale) is ordered to trek from New Mexico to Montana to return a Cheyenne chief (Wes Studi) to his lands to die. The party includes the chief’s son (Adam Beach) and other family members.

They encounter a young widow (Rosamund Pike) whose family has been slaughtered by Comanches.

Hostiles offers an unforgiving look at settler life and Indian relations, and we are not spared the gore or strife along the way. Although it’s set on the plains, this is no cowboys and Indians Western. It’s a violent film about violent times.

The characters are damaged goods, raw and shaken by the tragic consequences of war.

ZOMBIES (TV-G) — The Disney Channel continues its string of hits with the original movie Zombies, starring Milo Manheim as Zed, an ebullient Zombie kid, and Meg Donnelly as Addison, a cheerleading charmer. “What could go so wrong with a girl and a Zombie?” you ask. In the postapocalypse town of Seabrook, Zombies are segregated and regulated for the safety of the suburbanite residents, but this happens to be the year that Zombies are allowed to attend the local preptastic high school.

It’s one part Romeo and Juliet

PADDINGTON 2 (PG) — Now that Paddington bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) is comfortably installed with the Brown family (Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins), he has his eye on a delightful popup book in a local antiques store, meant as a present for Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday. Paddington takes a series of odd jobs in a hilarious attempt to earn money to buy the book, but it is stolen and he is framed. The cast of characters is rich: Hugh Grant as Phoenix Buchanan, an aging actor in desperate straits, for starters, plus Brendan Gleeson, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Michael Gambon, Joanna Lumley and director Paul King. What you end up with is a heartwarming classic that’s as sweet as a marmalade sandwich.

MAZE RUNNER: DEATH CURE (PG-13) — We first met Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) in The Maze Runner, where he was dropped in the middle of a fortress of a maze and, along with a group of compatriots, battled to make it out. Two films later, the situation is reversed, and to save their friends, those same young men must fight to make it into the Last City, home of the evil WCKD organization that mazed them in the first place. Civilization is infected with a virus known as Flare, and their immunity to this virus makes them both targets and potential saviors. Many reprised roles in this finale film (Ki Hong Lee, Kaya Scodelario, Dexter Darden, Thomas Brodie-Sangster) will thrill fans of the series, but it’s a lot to take on for someone unfamiliar with the backstory.

To Google, or Not to Google…

My good friend, Hazel, had gone through two husbands and had three daughters by the time I met her at a Bingo game. Her daughters were dating, varying in age from sixteen to nineteen, and had yet to bring home a boy that Hazel liked. Finally, the youngest, Lisa found one that her mother quickly became very fond of. Greg was clean-shaven, had short hair, dressed nicely and was polite and courteous. He stood when Hazel entered the room and always brought Lisa home when he said he would. “I know she’s too young, but I hope she marries him,” said Hazel one day when we were preparing for Bingo. “I know he doesn’t have a job right now, but he will have.”

Something didn’t sit well with me, so I typed Greg’s name into Google, and what I discovered made my eyes pop. It appeared that Greg was a convicted felon,

JUNE 2018 and his felonies made quite a list— all the way from jewelry to grand theft auto. I was reluctant to show this to Hazel, and finally decided to tell Lisa to Google Greg which she did, and then was mad at me!

She wanted her perfect romance to continue and I had spoiled it.

Much as I know better than to get mixed up in the affairs of others, there I was and with no simple way out that I could see.

When Wednesday came around and it was our regular day to visit the library, I waited in vain for Hazel to call and when she did not, I decided I must do something or I would lose my good friend. So I took her to Bingo.

It was a good thing I did because it was her lucky day. She won one of the warm up games and was right away on for another. She also won that one, but had to split with two others. By intermission she was already up by almost three hundred dollars and was as excited as I had ever seen her.

“Now maybe I can trade my rotten car in for the Camry I’ve been coveting,” she said happily.

She went on to win once more and by this time had apparently forgotten about Greg and Lisa. By the time we got home, Hazel was humming happily and quickly learned that Lisa had met a new boy by the name of Craig and had already Googled him and found nothing bad. I breathed a huge sigh of relief as our friendship seemed secure once again. We made plans for another Bingo outing so Hazel could drive her almost new car and show it off.

This time she was not so lucky and neither was I, but we had a great time anyway. I liked one game in particular that was called “Bingo Mania.” To win you had to

have two regular Bingos and be on for a third. That made the game pretty crazy, but we had a great time with it. One of our tablemates won and we were delighted.

After Bingo we went for a drive in the hills with Hazel showing off the great pick up and in general how much she loved her new car. “Tell me truthfully,” I said, needing to get it off my chest. “How sorry are you that Greg turned out to be a jerk?”

“Oh, I’m not sorry at all,” replied Hazel. “If you hadn’t Googled him and then taken me to Bingo where I won so big, I wouldn’t have my new car which I have decided to name ‘Betsy’ by the way. It’s a play on bestie—I just love her.”

“I can tell,” I said, “Now maybe you can stay out of your daughters’ love lives?”

“Not on your life,” she said seriously. “It’s my job.”

Honoring a Bubbly Bingo Buddy It was one of those days. I just didn’t feel like the “ha, ha, ha” that goes with an evening of Bingo with my girls. I was looking for a quiet spot in a small hall where I wasn’t expected to talk to anyone. I just wanted to be alone.

I found my perfect seat on the aisle in the rear of the hall, switched the plastic chair for a metal one, lined up my cups of ice chips, daubers, markers, scotch tape, waiters and magnetic wand and my photo of my grandchildren. I no longer carry peashooters, popcorn flippers, or little elephants with the trunk in the air. So there was plenty of room for all my cards, especially when I spread them out so no one would sit near me.

Just as the caller was ready to start a young girl rushed in and headed straight for the chair beside me. That might have been okay with me—except that she held in her hand more cards than there was space for and she began

JUNE 2018 slowly moving my stuff around.

Grudgingly I set my Bingo bag on the floor, but I was frustrated and angry. My hopes for solitude were dashed.

In situations like this it usually takes me a while to set my thinking straight. After all, I only paid for one seat and my stuff WAS in her space. Looking around the room I saw that there was really no seat she could have found three minutes before the game. As my attitude softened, I tried to think of something nice to say to break the ice, but before I could come up with something she was looking at the photo of my grandchildren.

“Those must be your grand kids.

How many do you have?”

That did it. If anyone wants to be my friend they have to be willing to talk about my grandchildren.

Before the evening was over I had a friend in this bubbly young woman who returned from the concession stand with a coffee and donut for me and refused my offer to pay.

She shared with me about her struggles raising a child alone while working in a restaurant, and how much she looked forward to an occasional quiet evening of Bingo, when she had a good “tip day” and a good sitter for her child.

When she was ready to leave she hugged me and asked if we could meet here next week. I promised to spread my stuff out and save her a seat.

That was twenty years ago.

Marge is still my best friend and Bingo Buddy. Over the years I have shared with you our antics and adventures, and I wanted to honor and thank her on this Bingo Buddy Day. Don’t forget to honor your Bingo Buddy on June 3rd.

My Column Is Getting Hijacked The other day I got an email from a Dennis, in California. He wrote: “Bob, I very much enjoy your column and have been reading it, I think, since you started writing it. But, I am troubled with the bad responses many of your suggestions have gotten. Maybe, if you let me write one of your columns, I can do a better job.”

So, I turn the typewriter over to Dennis. He wrote: “I am particularly angry at the fact that the callers are required to read statements that are grammatically incorrect…BUT, they are repeated week after week.

I agree with you that the concern should NOT be that the person has the winning number on his or her card, but whether the person actually gets a Bingo on that number.

If only they would say, ‘you must Bingo on the LAST number called,’ rather than, ‘you must have the last number on your card to Bingo,’ it would make more sense.

Then there is the issue of using the word ‘less’ rather than ‘fewer.’

I once told a friendly caller in my hall that she should not say, ‘if you Bingo on 52 numbers or LESS… the wording is, of course, ‘if you Bingo on 52 numbers of FEWER.’ I felt gratified when she started saying it properly.

Bob, I have never called Bingo, but I know it is not an easy job.

I have talked to many callers who say they appreciate the fact that you go to bat for them.

Oh, and one more thing, Bob. I agree that all halls should have at least one night a year where everyone gets ONE card. Not a six-on or a nine-on, but a ONEON. Now, purchasers could pay a different price for that card and that would regulate their winnings.

But, is it fair for a person who can only afford to buy ONE six-on at the lowest buy-in price (say $5) to have to compete against people who have paid $120 for hundreds and hundreds of cards? I don’t think so. It’s the highrollers who pay the freight, though. Bob, keep up the good work.”

Thanks, Dennis, I don’t think I could have said it better myself.

So how about this? One, have fun playing Bingo. Two, explain the difference between LESS and FEWER and the need to re-word their statement about “having the last number called on your card.”

Finally, if the caller mumbles and no one has fun and you feel as if you are in a Zombie Bingo parlor, do something about it. You are the PAYING customer. If that doesn’t work, play somewhere where Bingo is still fun. Send your comments to: bobonbingo@ earthlink.net.

Is Winning to Blame for Bad Vibes at Bingo?

Hi Guy, One of the best things about Bingo (aside from winning sweet, sweet jackpots!) for me is the group of guys I play with. There are seven of us in total and on any given Bingo night there are at least four of us sitting together playing Bingo and enjoying each other’s company.

Occasionally it will be all seven of us there, although that’s getting rarer since, surprisingly, our lives have gotten busier since retirement (grandkids, travel, etc.).

We have known each other a dozen years or more, depending on which one of us you’re pointing at. We generally all live in the same neighborhood or did at one time, and a local Elks Lodge Bingo is the place we mostly get together and play. Sometimes there is a lot to talk about; sometimes we’re quiet.

Whatever the mood is, we enjoy sharing it.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t friction. We know each other’s weak spots, we bicker on occasion (especially when it comes to sports and politics), and we tend to be competitive with just about anything. But whatever the touchy topic of the moment is, we get past it and stay tight. Usually.

Which brings me to why I’m writing to you. In the past couple of months, one of the guys in our group has been on a pretty good winning streak at Bingo. Between pulltabs and jackpots he has to have won close to $1,000—which is pretty impressive considering that this is an average charity Bingo with a good size player turnout.

When my friend has won, he’s been a comic about it, flapping his winnings around and calling the rest of us “the losers circle” and such. It doesn’t bother me, but it seems to have upset a couple of the other guys in our group.

At first I didn’t really give much attention to it, but after several

JUNE 2018 weeks you can tell that there are still bad feelings. I’m not sure if it’s just a matter of this being a group of grumpy old men, if there is jealousy or hurt feelings, or if there is something else going on. We’ve all won at Bingo at some point and we’re always happy when one of us wins. Now, one of us has won four in a row and it is a problem?

I don’t get it, and I hope we can fix it. Any ideas?

Worried in New York Hi Worried, It definitely sounds like something is up.

It’s doubtful this has anything to do with the winner’s behavior; you guys have been friends for years, you are all competitive, and you frequently spar over sports, politics, and other subjects.

Therefore, his joking about you guys being “losers” doesn’t seem like it would affect anyone particularly personally or deeply.

Which leads me to the question: Is it the entire group that is upset with this guy, or is it just one or two of you and the rest are sitting back wondering what’s going on?

If that’s the case, this tension may not really be about the winning streak, but something that more broadly has to do with the money.

Has he borrowed money from one of the group and not paid it back? Could someone be strapped for cash possibly have asked him for a loan after his winning streak and he declined? Did the last winner treat the group to a free Bingo night or dinner or whatever, and this guy has yet to share a single dime of his winnings?

These are, of course, all guesses, but offer you a little something to consider. In the meantime, here is another thought: Why don’t you just ask one of the guys? You’ve been friends for years. Is it really that difficult to simply take one of them aside, explain that you’ve been sensing some tension, and ask what’s going on?

Is Microchipping Worth the Cost?

Q: I take my two cats, to a local shot clinic that is held every spring. This year, the tech asked if I wanted my cats microchipped. I said no, because they’re indoor cats and it seems like an unnecessary expense. He looked at me like I was almost a criminal for not saying yes! What do you think?

A: It’s entirely your decision whether to microchip your pets, so there was no need for the tech to get all judgmental about it.

Since I have your attention, allow me to throw some statistics your way. A 2009 study cited by the American Veterinary Medical Association found that dogs without microchips were returned to their owners 22 percent of the time, whereas microchipped dogs were returned 52 percent of the time. Cats without microchips were reunited with their owners less than 2 percent of the time, whereas microchipped cats went back home 38 percent of the time.

Your cats probably have collars and tags — and that’s great — but accidents happen. Doors get left ajar. Thunderstorms roll in. And indoor cats... get outside. Cats are notorious for slipping their collars.

While a microchip doesn’t guarantee your cats will be found and reunited with you, it does greatly improve the odds.

Microchips have been standardized and data networks greatly improved over the past decade. So, while it is always your choice to microchip your cats, I do think it’s worth the extra cost to do so.

Classic Roasted Chicken Breasts You can’t go wrong with a classic, right?

2 1/2 teaspoons olive oil 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 4-ounce boneless skinless chicken breasts 2 rosemary sprigs 1. Heat oven to 425 F. Line a baking pan with foil. Brush foil with 1 teaspoon olive oil.

2. Stir lime juice with minced garlic, 1 1/2 teaspoon oil, coarse salt and pepper.

3. On sheet, spoon lime-garlic oil over two 4-ounce boneless skinless chicken breasts. Top with rosemary sprigs.

4. Roast until cooked through, 12 to 14 minutes. Let cool. Discard rosemary.

Seven playing tips Here are seven tips to help you play smarter in the casino.

(1) Since the casino has the mathematical edge on all bets, it’s best to play games s-l-o-wl-y to reduce the total amount of money wagered. You can do this at blackjack by playing on full tables rather than alone against the dealer (fewer hands played per hour). At craps, use the Five Count method of play (eliminates about half the shooters). When playing mini-baccarat, wait for a player to win on the bank hand before wagering. At slots, pause briefly between each spin and take frequent breaks. The slower you play, the less you expose your bankroll to the house edge.

(2) Never play a progressive slot machine with less than max coins wagered. The only reason to play a progressive slot machine is to chase the big jackpot. If you aren’t going to play maximum coins, then you should play a different slot machine. Otherwise, you might be in a state of shock if you hit the jackpot symbols on a progressive machine and instead of winning the 6 or 7 figure jackpot, you end up winning hundreds or thousands instead because you didn’t play the maximum coins. Likewise, you should always play max coins on a buy-a-pay machine where the jackpot symbols are only activated with the third coin played.

(3) You can always tell if a video poker machine is worth playing by looking at the payoff schedule on the machine. For example, for a jacks-or-better (draw poker) game, ideally the single coin payoff for the full house and flush should be 9/6 respectively (these machines

JUNE 2018 return 99.54% with perfect play).

Every decrease by one in either the full house or flush single coin payoff decreases the return by roughly 1.1%. So an 8/6 pay schedule would return only 97.3%. Be smart and check the pay schedules before you play.

(4) You are playing blackjack and you have a 16 against a dealer upcard of 10. You say under your breath, “Ahh, shoot,” but you’ve still got to make a play. But what’s best, to stand or hit? Depends. If the casino offers surrender, then surrender is your best play. If surrender is not available then you are slightly better off hitting rather than standing. One exception: If your 16 is made up of 3 (or more) cards, then standing is the better play.

(5) Many novice craps players like to wager on the Big 6 and 8.

The rules for winning are simple.

If you bet on the Big 6, you win if 6 is rolled and lose if instead a 7 is rolled (same rules for Big 8). You can make the same bet in craps that pays more! Where? Make a Place bet on 6 or 8. A winning 6 or 8 Place bet pays 7-6, whereas a winning Big 6 or 8 bet pays only 1-1 (or even money).

(6) There are two ways to lower the house edge against you at roulette. The first way is to play roulette on wheels that have only a single 0 number as opposed to the single and double zero. The second way is to play roulette where the rules specify that if the ball lands on zero or double zero the player loses only half his wager on any even-money wager (e.g., odd/even; red/black/ or high/low). The house edge is reduced about 50% in both cases, which in the long run will save you a considerable amount of money.

(7) Blackjack players will gladly accept the casino’s offer for “even money” when they have a blackjack and the dealer shows an ace. That’s because they figure the even money payout is a sure thing especially if the dealer winds up with blackjack.

However, accepting even money is a big mistake. In the long run you will earn slightly more than even money when you decline the even money proposition. This is a case where a bird in the hand is not worth more than two in a bush.

Play smart and never take even money.

What's News in Nevada . . .

The Fate of SLS Las Vegas Alex Meruelo, a Reno-based entrepreneur says he will invest up to $100 million to try to bring back to life the flagging SLS Las Vegas.

He made the announcement to media shortly after the state gaming commission approved his acquisition of the struggling Strip property. Reports from his group say that Meruelo will “ make the property profitable by investing in the upgrades and redesign.” There are rumors that he may revive the old “Sahara” name, which is currently owned by another company.

Chinese New Year Boost Records keepers say that because the Chinese New Year fell in February this year and not in January, as was the case last year, for two months in a row Nevada’s statewide gaming win was over the billion-dollar mark. Amid all of this, sportsbooks continue to be the big winners. For a four-year period, success in that sector has been on the upswing on a monthto-month basis.

Nye County On A Roll Nye County, Nevada—a large county to the north and west of Las Vegas (it’s largest city is Pahrump)—seems to be riding a hot streak as far as gaming revenues are concerned. The numbers have been on a general upswing since last summer. As this year began, gaming wins rose by 1.85 percent over the same time last year.

Small Bet, Big Money Local media in Las Vegas recently reported that a woman placed a $3.75 bet on a slot machine at the Orleans Hotel and Casino and won a jackpot valued at $620,000.

The payoff came in the middle of the night on a machine called Aristocrat’s Buffalo Grand. The lucky winner was a “local,” but her identity was not announced.

Reno Eatery Name Change A restaurant in downtown Reno must change the name of its buffet—a deal with Station Casinos means that the Feast Buffet can no longer be called Feast. Stations already operates buffets under that name and the name is federally registered as a recognized trademark. The dispute over the name had been going on for several years.

Silver Sevens Goes Eco The Las Vegas property Silver Sevens, according to published reports, is going “whole hog” into recycling and waste management.

During a recent six-month period, the property recycled more than 110 tons of waste. In doing so, Silver Sevens saves about $25,000 a year in trash collection fees.

More than 26-hundred gallons of cooking oil have been captured for re-use so far in the project. It is reported that other properties many begin the process.

I want someone to steal a doughnut truck and go on a highspeed chase. It would be so funny watching cops chase a doughnut truck on the news. —Anonymous Summer officially arrives this month on Thursday, June 21.

It is the longest day of this year and after its passage, fall and winter loom on the horizon. It’s time for barbecues, picnics, family reunions, hot sunshine, and nights gazing upward at the starry skies. A reminder: every time Old Mr. Sun beckons you outside, don’t forget your sunscreen and hat. That’s because more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. In fact, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. That would be me as I’ve had several bouts with this condition even though I am definitely not a sun bunny.

Bright sunlight makes me squint and the glare gives me a headache.

On the other hand, I abhor the air conditioning in restaurants. I always keep a sweater in my car for that reason. I can’t enjoy eating when it’s so cold I can see globs of ice in my soup. My husband, Robert, calls me picky, but after forty years he should be used to my quirks by now.

The month of June has a plethora of holidays. I love that word plethora. It means an abundance of something. Anyway, the first Friday of June is National Doughnut Day. It started in 1938 as a fundraiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army to help those in need due to the Great Depression.

It also honored Salvation Army women who served doughnuts

to the soldiers of World War I. Whatever its origin, I love this holiday because it gives me an excuse to indulge in my favorite treat, not that I need an excuse.

Once in Vegas we visited a place where the doughnuts resembled cheeseburgers. Our eyes deceived us as we bit into them with our brains thinking meat and cheese, but our taste buds confirming yeasty sweetness. One of the casino bingos I attend offers free doughnuts at the early sessions.

With a doughnut in one hand and a coffee with Baileys and whipped cream in the other, I’m a happy camper. Some of you might say yuck, but quirky Nancy likes what she likes.

That brings me to June 8th, which is Best Friends Day. At my age, the old axiom that our best friends are our oldest friends is true in more ways than one. Some of my besties started teaching when I did back in the 60s; others I met later. The glue that holds us together is our shared memories of good times and bad. These are the ties that bind us one to the other as the years pass and we cling closer to those we love.

Lastly, you might not know that June 23rd is National Columnist Day and I are one, thanks to the Bingo Bugle. Plus, June 29th is designated as Hug Holiday. Since I can’t get real ones from most of my loyal readers, how about sending me cyber hugs by emailing me at homemailbox@roadrunner.com?
