Connie Thill has volunteered at The Knights of Columbus Council #1709 in South Milwaukee for over a quarter century.

If you haven’t seen him around for a while, he had a good reason for being away. “I’ve been on a sabatical for over a month.

I had a hip replacement May 24th at the Clement Zablocki Medical Center.

I missed doing my volunteer work at Knights of Columbus Bingo and I’m happy to be back writing the winning checks to all of our lucky winning Bingo Players.” If you ask him how he was treated at the V.A. Medical Center he’ll tell you, “They treated me like royalty. As you might expect with any other hospital some food selections were very good and some were not so good, but with a 4 page menue you could definitely find something to enjoy. Fortunately, I’m a veteran and I am able to receive medical treament at the V.A.” Connie will be celebrating his 89th Birthday this month (“Good Lord willing”, he says). He’s done every job imaginable at Bingo, he’s worked the floor, sold Bingo Cards, worked the back room and the bar. The only job he hasn’t done is calling Bingo. “That’s either because I have a case of stage fright or maybe I’m afraid of having rotten tomatoes thrown at me if I’d make a mistake calling the number. I don’t know which.” The Knights of Columbus isn’t the first place he’s volunteered at Bingo. “I worked Bingo at St. Mary’s Church base-

A Knights of Columbus member named Al Berezinski was there and asked me if I wanted to join the Knights. I told him I’d join after I retired, and I did. I was married to my wife Margo 1 month shy of 64 years. She died in October of 2020.”

Connie worked at Line Material Co. in Cudahy and met his future wife Margo at the company Christmas Party in 1955. He asked her for her phone number and she said, “It’s in the book”. In conversation he found out that she bowled on Wednesday nights at the same bowling alley where he bowled most of the rest of the week. He met up with her there, they started dating and were married the following year.

He was drafted into the Army in 1953 and went to Infantry Basic Training to go to Korea. Instead, the Army sent him to Germany where he was trained at

Radio Repair School and worked repairing radios in Germany until his discharge at Fort Sheridan in Illinois. He was discharged in December and considers it was a nice Christmas present from Uncle Sam. Connie’s in the Bowling Hall of Fame. While serving in Germany he was picked to bowl against professional bowlers to entertain the troops. When all was said and done, he bowled the highest score of all. That was surely entertaining for the troops.

He’s got some wise words for us all. “Work hard, play hard and enjoy our life because you don’t know how long it will be. I’ve been fortunate with a good long life and wish the same for you.”

Connie believes that If you really like Bingo, you should come and play where he volunteers, the South Milwaukee Knights of Columbus 732 Badger Ave. They play every Monday at 6:00 PM, doors open at 4:00 PM. Ad on Page 6.

The Belles of Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo, One of the funnier things that goes on at my Bingo hall is that there is this clique of about ten players who think they own the place. They are all chummy with the caller and other workers and sit at a couple of special tables where no one else is welcome and where people have actually been forced to get up and move from. It makes for quite a show. Recently it dawned on me that all of us who play Bingo here are reliving the high school cafeteria experience: A handful of cool, popular girls are running the show and everyone else just operates invisibly around them. The funny part is that this clique is made up of white-haired ladies wearing pilled sweaters and polyester stretch pants.

I am curious if other halls out there have similar player cliques.

Still Waiting on Records?

The Department of Veterans Affairs is now going to work with the National Archives and Records Administration to get COVID-19 vaccines to on-site staff so that they can return to work to process compensation claims. The VA is going to provide enrollment specialists and medical staff with vaccines provided by the Department of Health and Human Services.

The short list of requests the NPRC is able to handle are true emergencies: records information so veterans can get medical treatment, burials and homeless veterans trying to get into homeless shelters.

And, no, in answer to one Missouri veteran who asked if he could just show up in St. Louis and do his own research. All National Archives research rooms are closed. All museums are closed.

Those wonderful souls we call Mom — the givers of warm hugs, whose kisses cure ouchies and who are always there with love, a shoulder to cry on and maybe a sandwich. Ain’t she grand? Well, not always.

Here are eight more actresses and the decidedly nonmaternal characters they played: Rhea Perlman in Matilda: A precocious child with telekinetic powers? You’d think mom would be thrilled, but Zinnia Wormword, Matilda’s mother, is obsessed with television, bingo and not understanding the special qualities of her daughter.

involving the public strolling in.

Unfortunately, at this point, all records digitizing has come to a halt.

One has to wonder about the true size of the records request backlog. A letter signed by 185 members of Congress gave the number as 480,000. It also mentions the $15 million given to NPRC to help get the backlog cleared, the emergency number that isn’t answered and the call center that isn’t staffed.

What did we get for that $15 million? behavior doled out by a mentally ill Joan Crawford, including a beating for the use of wire hangers to hang pricey dresses.

Kathleen Turner in Serial Mom — Speaking of rigid expectations, how about a woman who, despite coming off as the perfect housewife and mother, exacts the worst of consequences for what she deems bad behavior: She’ll kill ya.

Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate — Some mothers are bossy, but Eleanor Iselin uses her brainwashed son as an assassin to further her own diabolical plan to have her husband nominated for the presidency.

Mo’Nique in Precious — The ways in which Mary are cruel know no bounds — her abuse is physical, emotional, mental, raw, and it’s a miracle that Precious survives it.

Anne Bancroft in The Graduate — What to do when your mom has better lingerie and won’t share her lover who is more age-appropriate for you? This is the dilemma of Elaine, whose mother seduces a new college grad to distract from her loveless marriage.

Shirley MacLaine in Postcards from the Edge — A drug-addicted actress finishes up rehab and must live with a responsible adult in order to avoid further consequences. Too bad Mom is competitive, loud and sucks all the air out of the room.

Based on a semi-autobiographic screenplay by actress Carrie Fisher about her relationship with Debbie Reynolds.

Jennifer Coolidge in American Pie — Best known as Stifler’s mom, this buxom beauty makes a man out of one of her son’s friends, who have made a pledge to lose their virginity by the prom.

The Skinny on Daubers It’s time we settled some issues about daubers. First of all, new daubers should be started by tapping the felt end several times against a piece of paper, not hammering forcefully like trying to drive a rusty nail as Kate does, irritating everyone in hearing range. Having watched a dauber explode, I don’t ever want to be around when that happens again.

Granted, it was a very hot day and the dauber had been out in the sun and undoubtedly could not be blamed for exploding, still, it made a colossal mess.

It could be that the exploding dauber had been refilled and was not as tightly sealed as a regulation, straight-from-the-factory dauber.

JULY 2021 There are many places where you can buy the dauber ink and do the refills yourself. I, personally, prefer to discard my daubers when empty because I enjoy having new ones. Goodness knows, that is infrequently enough as they seem to last forever. I suppose this attitude is politically incorrect as we are supposed to recycle everything. I can just imagine the earth disappearing under a pile of used Bingo daubers!

The very best thing about having a new dauber is finding unusual ones like animal shapes. I told you in an earlier column about Kate’s having one that was in the shape of a black eight ball. I had one shaped like a dog which I gave to my friend, Carol, because she couldn’t bear not having it. She confided to me just this week that she loves it, but never wins when she uses it, so she carries it along in her Bingo bag to look at occasionally.

Kate’s favorite is a fat pink elephant head that she transfers from dauber to dauber as they become empty. He looks better on pink daubers than on green ones if you care about color coordination.

I like to park the elephant head on top of Barney, my lucky Bingo dragon. Barney enjoys wearing any dauber top as a hat while I am playing a game and thinks the elephant head is elegant even though it dwarfs him.

I had a dauber shaped like a giraffe and liked it so well I tried to refill it. The top broke as I was prying it off and I had to discard

the whole colorful mess. I have to admit it was hard to grip and had a tendency to fall over.

Kate got several round daubers, but I don’t like them. They are hard to grip and tend to make you daub with a fist instead of your fingers—which destroys the lightheartedness of Bingo.

Once Kate got me a whole set of daubers with my name imprinted on them. They are all right, but I don’t really enjoy sitting there looking at a whole row of REVA in front of me. They cause a lot of comment and people often ask, “Is that your name?” To which I am tempted to give a smart-mouth answer like, “No, my name is Bernadette, but that wouldn’t fit in the space.”

Last week I talked to a man who had an aluminum case with felt lining fitted out for his daubers. I asked him if he’d had it specially made and he said, “No, I found it at Home Depot. It’s a tool case but I thought it would be great for my Bingo supplies and I was right. I even carry a sandwich right here.”

I admired his case but wouldn’t want one for myself. It’s a little industrial for my tastes.

One thing I occasionally run across is daubers that daub marks other than round daubs. I have one that daubs a star, but it either doesn’t like to flow, or dumps a whole lot of ink at once—which is a nuisance and means you’d better have a napkin handy. I am looking for one that daubs a dollar sign— wouldn’t that be neat? I’d keep it forever.

Sister Takes a Spin Hi, my name is Diane. I’m Bob’s sister. The other day Bob and I were talking about his monthly column, here in the Bingo Bugle; he thanked me for a lot of story ideas I have suggested during the past twenty years. He asked me how he could properly “thank me.”

I quickly replied: “Let me write your column for one month.” He said “OK.” So, here goes.

I want to relay to you something that happened to me the other day at a Bingo session at a local nonprofit group. It was the final game of the night…the coverall. About 100 people were playing. Some bought tons of cards and had them pasted together all over the table.

How they were able to keep up, I have no idea!

The game dragged on. No one had a Bingo: 55 numbers, 60 numbers, 65 numbers. FINALLY, on the 68th number…BINGO! Now, with the Bingo coming that late, there had to be multiple

winners. And, yes there were: 14.

The pot was so sliced up (14 ways) that the jackpot seemed too small for a coverall.

But, odds for Bingo have always fascinated me. In regular Bingo, someone could win on the 4th number, or it could go as high as 35 to 40 calls. I think that is part of the real fun. You just never know. The odds really come into play when you need just one number to win.

For example, suppose you need only G-47 to win a coverall. They have already called 50 numbers.

That means that your chances of them calling G-47 are 1-in-25. They could call 24 numbers WITHOUT calling G-47. And, that is usually what happens.

My brother Bob tells me that a “numbers expert” actually went crazy trying to figure out Bingo patterns. Here is that story, if I remember it: When toymaker Edwin Lowe took a carnival game he had seen–BEANO—and standardized it as BINGO, he created too few cards. Finally, the pastor of a church in New Jersey that had been using Bingo as fundraisers asked Lowe to come up with more different patterns.

Lowe hired a statistician to help.

The man got so obsessed with finding new patterns that he eventually lost his mind.

I hope that story is true. I feel sorry for the statistician, but “going out of your mind” can happen easily when you play Bingo. Just ask me. Just ask my brother.

Q: I see no reason to pick up my dog’s poop, and I’m tired of being told that it’s my responsibility. I’m a taxpayer, and part of those taxes go toward cleaning the streets. If my dog poops on the curb or the sidewalk, the city should clean it up. That’s what I pay for. I also don’t see why my neighbor gets so upset when my dog poops on her front lawn. It’s all fertilizer. It’s time for big government to do its job and stop making us pick up after our dogs. — Bill in Burlington A: Well, that’s a poopy attitude.

Here’s the simple fact: You are responsible for your dog. Not the city, not your neighbor. Where your dog’s actions impact other people, animals or the environment, it’s your responsibility to minimize or prevent that impact.

Dog poop left on the sidewalk, curb or street eventually breaks down, right? Wrong. It gets

stepped on by other animals or people, who track fecal bacteria all over the place. It washes into the wastewater system and introduces new bacteria into natural waterways, sickening wildlife.

The neighbor’s yard is a no-go zone because it’s their yard, plain and simple. Dog poop or urine can discolor or even burn their grass.

Your dog is trespassing. And if you think that letting your dog poop in a park is OK, think again. Would you want a little kid running barefoot in the park to step in that poop?

All those problems are minimized when you take along a little baggie, pick up that poop and dispose of it properly. There’s no need to debate this. Pick it up.

How to Find a Bingo Buddy Dear Guy, I keep seeing stories in the Bingo Bugle about people talking with their Bingo buddies or splitting prize money with their Bingo buddy or whatever. My question is: How do you find a Bingo buddy?

I have been playing Bingo about six months and go by myself a couple times a week. I don’t know any other players and my few friends say they aren’t interested in playing. I would like to have one or two friends that like Bingo the same as me and we could sit together and enjoy playing together. But I am lost trying to figure out how to find even one Bingo buddy.

I would appreciate any advice you have.

With that challenge out of the way, the next step is to look for other players like yourself who are playing alone and sit near them.

Chat with them a little (but not too much; most players don’t like to talk much—or at all—when a game is in session) and see what kind of response you get. If they seem amiable, you could be on your way. If they are dismissive, move on to someone else.

This process will take months, so don’t give up. If you are patient, I am confident that you will find a player or two (or three!) who will grow into Bingo buddies. Just assume that there are others just like you who would like a friend to sit and play Bingo with—you are simply making the first move!

A side note: You do not mention if you are married or have a girlfriend, nor do you say whether you care if your Bingo buddy ends up being male or female. Be careful there…a single lady might misunderstand your friendliness, and a spouse could get pretty upset to find out you have a regular female buddy or two (or three!) whom you meet up with on your Bingo outings.

All this said, I wish you the best of luck in your search for Bingo buddies. It really can make Bingo more fun when you have a buddy to laugh with, cheer on…and commiserate with when you lose that rotten coverall Bingo jackpot because of one lousy number! — Guy

Slots vs. Video Poker If you are a die-hard slot player, you know very well that today’s slot machines come in all different shapes, sizes, and flavors. However, there is one undeniable fact about a slot machine.

The ones that have the highest payback will pay 9 coins for a full house and 6 coins for a flush per coin played (these machines will return 99.54% when you play every hand perfectly and are known as full-pay machines).

Ditto for Bonus Poker. A full pay Bonus Poker pays 8 coins for full house and 5 coins for the flush (99.17% return). It’s up to you to learn what the full pay schedule is for whatever video poker game you want to play and then search out that pay table in the casino. (Don’t settle for playing short-pay video poker games!)

Cool Nights in July Every time I unpacked one box, three more full boxes appeared.

This would have been fun if it happened every time I opened a wine bottle. —NLP My oh my, I’m so physically and mentally exhausted I may fall asleep as I type this column. After forty plus years in the same house, my husband and I recently moved into a condo. It was clear that we needed to downsize because we could no longer keep up with the demands of home ownership, but what an undertaking. A friend used to say owning a home is feeding a money monster that gobbles your money faster than a cat covering up poo. It’s always something from a leaky roof to a crumbling driveway; the list is endless. Since it is a seller’s market right now we decided the timing was right.

Thankfully we had already rented the condo, or we would have been homeless in short order since we listed our home on one day and it was under contract the next. My bingo daubers and luckies were among the first things to be moved as some things are more important than others.

And speaking of important things, July’s heat reminds me of how much I love air conditioning. I grew up in a two-story farmhouse that

became an oven in the heat of the day. We had window fans in every window but that served mostly to circulate the hot air. Sweating in a hot bedroom did not make me happy, but air conditioning was a luxury most families including mine could not afford. I mention this because July 3 to August 15 is Air Conditioning Appreciation Days and I not only appreciate it, I love it unconditionally.

Before air conditioning and fans, what did people do besides sweat profusely? In 1881 President James Garfield cooled his room by using a combination of air and sheets soaked in cool water. Don’t know exactly how that worked. Did he sleep on wet sheets or did he put wet sheets on top of ice buckets placed in front of the windows? The modern-day version of this method is to place a bucket of ice in front of a fan, same process just easier than dealing with soggy sheets. As someone who needs a very cool bedroom in which to sleep, I’ve been known to open a window in the dead of winter. Thankfully, my husband feels the same way and we have enjoyed years of marital bliss in near bone chilling airconditioned comfort.

On another topic July 11 is Cheer Up the Lonely Day. What better way to do that than by noticing those around you who fit the category and then taking them to bingo?

Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.

Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received.

Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize.

Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month’s contest.

Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing.

By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes.

Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize.

The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.
