Butler Bingo

Bingo Night is returning to the Village of Butler.

This is great news for all area Bingo lovers. Bingo will start January 15, 2022.

They will offer Bingo on the 3rd Saturday in January, February, March, April and May. Doors will open at 5:00 PM with the First Session beginning at 6:00 PM with the Second Session starting approximately 7:30 PM. The games will follow all Wisconsin Charitable Bingo Rules and Regulations. In keeping with Bingo regulations there will be no missed Bingos and you must have the last number called.

Brave the Cold for Bingo!

Dear Aunt Bingo, I love Bingo as much as the next player, but once winter hits I really find it hard to go out into the cold to go to a Bingo hall. What’s the secret? What’s the trick to ignoring the winter and slogging through the slush and mud to play Bingo, knowing that in an hour or two you will have to turn right around and go back out into the cold all over again?

VA Ends Debt Relief The Department of Veterans Affairs called a cease-fire on collection of overpayments between April 2020 and September 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.

Now that debt collection has started up again. The VA will not, however, actually make deductions from our benefits until January 2022. In addition, if you had unpaid medical co-payments before April 2020, they’ll start collecting those again.

That must mean the COVID pandemic is over, right? We’re all doing well, grocery prices haven’t soared, gas prices are still low, rents haven’t increased, we all have jobs or at least enough income if a spouse didn’t lose a job ... right?

If the VA says you owe money, you’ll receive a debt collection letter.

In it will be options for debt relief.

You might be offered extended repayment plans, compromises, waivers or temporary suspensions in payment. If you get a letter,

PICKS OF THE MONTH How to With John Wilson (TVMA) — Director and producer John Wilson spends a lot of time walking around New York trying to find the answers to some of life’s biggest questions. This observational docuseries returns for its second season and continues to enthrall with Wilson’s deadpan sarcasm.

His uncanny ability to start out with a ridiculously boring premise and somehow have it snowball into an utterly bizarre and totally different topic than anyone ever saw coming is fascinating. His lack of polished commentary is hilariously genuine.

(Netflix) The Housewife & the Shah Shocker (NR) — Bravo’s Housewives franchise is always good for some drama; lucky for us, producers are quick to capitalize on the salacious legal entanglements in which some of the women find themselves. From the Salt Lake City team, Jen Shah was arrested by federal agents earlier this year — on camera — after being investigated in a moneylaundering scheme. The castmates were just embarking on a group trip together when Jen received a phone call and quickly exited without explanation. The tip wasn’t enough to escape agents, though.

Jen was arrested along with her assistant, charged, pled not guilty, and awaits trial. This ABC News originals special will delve further into her alleged wrongdoings, the coordinated arrest and what her co-stars might have known about her “business.” (Hulu)

The Long Take We were very surprised when we arrived at Bingo to be asked to be in a movie. Of course, we said yes as it sounded like fun and we’d never been in a movie before! No pay was involved, but we were offered a free lunch if we would show up at the Bingo hall the next Sunday and spend the morning being filmed playing Bingo. We were asked to bring friends if possible, so we immediately recruited Cliff and Rodney, who also thought it was a fine idea.

When we arrived, we were given regular Bingo packs and sat down as if playing an ordinary set of games. The hall’s normal schedule of games was played and we started with a regular followed by a Texas blackout. The film crew encouraged us to be “active players” and wave our hands as well as stand up occasionally as

JANUARY 2022 the game became hot. We were also told to make loud remarks and encourage the caller to give us the number wanted or bear the consequences.

Bingo tends to be a rather sedate game, but the director wanted lots of action and background sound, so we gave it to her. We were told never to look at the camera and not to move across the camera’s line of sight. The director crowded us together at just four tables so it looked like it was a really big group.

“In Hollywood,” the director explained, “when we don’t have enough extras and need to look like a big group, we use crowd squeezers. They stay out of camera range and push the people tight together to make it look like a bigger crowd. I don’t think we’ll have to do that today.”

We thought it would be just a very quick take, but we were wrong.

The director set the scene, which meant she explained the scenario.

“The robber has sneaked in the back door and is hiding among the Bingo players. You ignore him and go on playing. The cops spot him, and he drops to the floor under the tables. A couple of you ladies act surprised and very shocked.”

The director looked us over, “Here,” she said to Kate handing her a cell phone, “You use the phone.” I laughed because Kate hates cell phones and threatens mayhem to anyone who uses one during Bingo.

We had been told to wear bright colors and I was pleased with my

new red sweater.

“Do you have a coat?” the director asked me. “The camera grabs that red.”

“I do have a coat,” I said. “But it’s purple.” I put it on.

“That’s better,” said the director.

“Now be sure you wave your arms and ask the caller to give you the right number.”

She patted Rodney on his bald spot as she walked by, “Need powder over here,” she called to makeup. Rodney did not look pleased.

Soon the cameras were rolling, and we were actively playing, waving arms and calling out comments on the game. I didn’t see the bad guy sneak in, but I soon felt him on the floor under our table.

“Hey, watch it,” I said. he director called, “Cut.” “I like your comment and your reaction,” the director told me, “but say it to him.” She pointed to Rodney. “A little comedy never hurts.”

The first couple of takes were fun and we were really into the swing of it. However, the takes went on and on and on. After the seventeenth take, I was really ready to call it a day, but the director wanted “one more, just in case.”

We had continued to daub our Bingo cards during the filming and now Kate was in a small frenzy.

She threw down her cell phone, stood up and yelled, “I don’t care if you caught the bad guy or not, I’ve got a Bingo!”

Who Invented All Those Patterns!?

Happy New Year to all of you. If there is any good news to report this time around it is that I seem to be seeing more and more younger people, particularly young couples, playing the game we all love best.

This is incredibly refreshing.

For decades, most people have thought of Bingo as an “old folks’ game.” But, as I have written year after year, if Bingo is going to survive and be healthy, more and more young people need to discover how much fun it can really be and join in.

It would seem that it is finally happening. Whoopee!

I’d like to begin the new year by talking about a subject that I first brought up a few years ago. This is: Bingo halls that have too many ways to win/too many patterns. As you know, after years of living on the west coast—some of that time in Las Vegas—I have retired to my hometown in southern Indiana. I

JANUARY 2022 am back at the old Catholic grade school where I first played Bingo in 1957.

Even though it’s a joy to be back in that building, with all of its wonderful memories, there is still one thing that took me a lot of weeks to get used to. There are TOO MANY PATTERNS— too many ways to score a Bingo.

The problem is that I have never been good at numbers. This is very ironic. You see, my dad could add four-digit numbers in his head.

I can’t add two and two. That is why I often find it very difficult to play more than a single “six-on” Bingo card. When you have to concentrate more than you should have to, it’s tough to not only keep up with the caller, but to see if you have actually won.

So, as we begin 2022, let me again make a STRONG PLEA to Bingo managers to re-think the number of patterns that can produce a winner. Even though I LOVE the way Bingo is handled in my old grade school, I think they have far too many possible winning combinations. But, as the weeks have gone by, I have begun to become more adjusted to the various ways to win. So, my plea for fewer combinations is mostly for first-time players. And, after all, if we are going to attract more players, then it’s essential that Bingo be as easy to play as possible, but still be fun. Let me know what you think: bobonbingo@earthlink.net.

JANUARY 2022 Dear Louise, When I began this column, I had no idea how often I’d be called upon to apologize for the behavior of my fellow men. Dirty jokes in a church Bingo hall? That’s just ignorant.

Not to mention disrespectful. I like a good joke as much as the next guy and am not above getting a good laugh from off-color humor.

But there is a time and a place, fellas. And a Bingo hall filled with God-fearing women is not one of them. —Guy

Watch What You Say Dear Guy, The note at the end of your column says it is OK for women to write to you, so I am doing so.

Why? Because I would like to address the unacceptable male habit of telling off-color jokes. It is bad enough that men enjoy telling these jokes to each other. It is worse when they tell these jokes in mixed company. Just last night my girlfriend and I had to get up and move from our table at Bingo because some men sitting near us kept telling sexist and vulgar jokes loud enough for the women around them to hear. Please do not get me wrong—I am not a schoolmarm prude. But there is a time and a place for everything, and a public church Bingo hall is certainly NOT the place for such boyish antics.

Dear Guy, Don’t you think it’s weird to wear bedroom slippers to Bingo?

There’s this couple where I play that either show up wearing slippers or, when the weather is bad, will come in boots and then change into slippers at the hall. I’m waiting for the day they show up in their pajamas!

—F.F.T., Alberta, Canada Dear F.F.T., People wear shoes, boots, sandals, and flip flops out and about. Why not slippers? Actually, I kind of like the idea. Those hard hall floors can be chilly and tough on the feet. A nice, cozy pair of slippers might be just the thing to warm the ol’ cockles. Thanks for the idea! —Guy

Q: I’d like to upgrade my Lab’s collar and leash, because he’s pretty powerful and tugs against his collar all the time until he starts to choke. What do you recommend?— Sara B., via email A: I’m a fan of harnesses, especially for dogs that like to pull at the leash. A harness fits around a dog’s front legs and torso, and has a top strap with a clip ring for the leash located between the dog’s shoulders. It’s secure and sturdy, it stays on your dog, and he won’t injure himself trying to pull away from you. (You can also keep his collar on, mainly so his license tag is always visible.)

Some dog harnesses come with a sturdy handle sewn onto the top strap. It’s not so much for picking up the dog but is an additional point of control if you’re worried about your dog bolting or jumping up on other people.

For the long term, of course, your Lab needs to improve his basic obedience skills. He should never tug at his leash, but should walk next to you. Putting him into a harness will give you more control.

Dogs tend to respond more often to a tug on the harness, which applies pressure at several points rather than just around the neck. Those multiple contact points disperse pressure around the dog’s torso so that he remains comfortable and uninjured, reducing anxiety and hopefully making him more receptive to training commands.

Harnesses are not as cheap as collars, but they’re well worth the investment, especially when dealing with a strong, independent thinker like your Lab. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

Blackjack Quiz I believe if you know some of the most important statistics about the game of blackjack, it can help you better understand the fundamentals of winning blackjack strategies.

However, I also understand that most folks find statistics boring; therefore, I prepared the following fun quiz, which I hope you will find entertaining as well as informative.

1. Ignoring ties, the percentage of hands that you can expect to win when you play blackjack is about: a. 45 percent b. 48 percent c. 50 percent 2. If you are dealt three consecutive hands, what is the chance that they will all lose, excluding ties? a. 1 percent b. 14 percent c. 30 percent 3. How frequently does a player get a blackjack? a. Once every 15 hands b. Once every 21 hands c. Once every 30 hands 4. How frequently does a basic strategy player bust? a. Once every six hands b. Once every eight hands c. Once every ten hands 5. How frequently does the dealer bust? a. One time out of every seven hands b. Two times out of every seven hands c. Three times out of every seven hands.

ANSWERS: 1. Answer: b. When you ignore the 9 percent of the hands that tie, you can expect to win 48 percent of the hands dealt to you and lose 52 percent. Notice that you will lose significantly more hands than you

For starters, the average amount of money that you win on the winning hands is slightly greater than a single betting unit because the latter are sometimes hands where you get a blackjack and are paid at 3-2, or you double down and win double the amount of your bet. Losing hands, on the other hand, often lose only a single betting unit. The result is that monetarily you will be close to, but not quite even when you play (this assumes that you use the basic playing strategy for all your hands).

If you want to go a step further and win much more money on winning hands compared to the amount you will lose on losing hands, so that overall you show a gain, then you’ve got to learn card counting.

2. Answer: b. You have about a 14 percent chance of losing three hands in a row when you play blackjack. Surprised? Most players probably guess 1 percent because they figure the chance of this happening is very low. Well it isn’t, so don’t panic and abandon the basic playing strategy when it happens.

3. Answer: b. The game is 21 and you can expect to get a blackjack once in every 21 hands.

4. Answer. a. A basic strategy player can expect to bust about 16 percent of the time or once every six hands. When a player busts, they always lose. Not so with the dealer (see next question).

5. Answer: b. The dealer busts about 28 percent of the time, or about two times out of every seven hands. Unlike a player bust, the dealer often wins when they bust, because players who act first and bust automatically lose (this is how the house has a built-in edge in blackjack). In fact, the dealer will bust significantly more times when they show a 2-6 upcard (about 42 percent with a 5 or 6 upcard), and much less with a 7 through Ace upcard (with an Ace, it’s only 17 percent after checking for a natural). Because the dealer’s chance of busting is higher when they show a small upcard, you should not risk busting a 12-16 stiff hand and should always stand (with two exceptions—it’s slightly better to hit a 12 against a dealer’s 2 or 3). However, when the dealer shows a strong upcard from 7 though Ace and has a much lower risk of busting, you should be more aggressive and hit your stiff hands until your hand totals 17 or more (even if it means you risk busting).

Jackpot Week After seven-figure slot jackpots were hit at Treasure Island, Circa and Harrah’s in under a week, a lucky Hawaiian woman kept the streak alive at Main Street Station on day seven when she hit a Wheel of Fortune double Diamond jackpot for $1,025,602. She was in Vegas to attend the Raiders-Chiefs game over the weekend and had been playing the WoF machine for seven minutes when the jackpot symbols lined up.

Five Millionth Wedding License According to the Clark County Clerk, the county will issue its five millionth marriage license sometime in mid-February. From a high of 121,000 licenses in 2001, the number has been declining ever since, all the way down to 56,000 last year. The county is currently averaging 6,000 licenses per month, which puts it on a pace to issue the five millionth sometime around Valentine’s Day. The Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority has rolled out a new campaign, “Forever Happens Here,” to market the Las Vegas wedding industry to the “next generation of couples.”

Another Day, Another Jackpot A player from Vancouver, Washington, in town “on business and vacation” hit the Mega Progressive jackpot at Face Up Pai Gow for $1,393,273 at Harrah’s this past fall. He’d just sat down and when he looked at his first hand he was a bit, shall we say, surprised to see that he’d been dealt a sevencard straight flush in clubs (with a joker). He said he planned to put the money in the bank. It was the third million-plus jackpot hit in Las Vegas in four days.

Jonas Brothers Southern Restaurant Nellie’s Southern Kitchen, a restaurant from the pop-group

Jonas Brothers’ family, will be opening soon at the MGM Grand.

It will be run by the Jonas parents, in a joint venture with a New Yorkbased investment firm. Nellie’s will “celebrate the comfort food, hospitality, and Southern charm of the family’s 1760s roots in North Carolina” (though the three Jonas sons, who’ve sold upwards of 20 million albums, grew up in New Jersey). It’s the second location for the brand; the original is in Belmont, North Carolina, where the Jonas Brothers’ greatgrandmother lived. The Jonas Brothers have performed many times in Las Vegas, primarily at MGM properties: the Grand Garden Arena, the Park Theater (now Dolby Live), and Mandalay Bay Events Center (now the Michelob Ultra Arena). Along with live entertainment, the menu will consist of such Southern comfort food as chicken & dumplings, chicken and gravy, chicken and waffles, Southern meat loaf, smoked pulled-pork sandwich, and of course warm biscuits and gravy.

Blake Shelton Announces Bally’s “Country Club” Blake Shelton, the country singer, TV personality (he’s been a judge on The Voice for all 21 seasons), and husband of singer Gwen Stefani is opening an Ole Red country music club at the Grand Bazaar Shops.

The 27,000-square-foot four-story hotspot will boast nearly 700 seats, with a rooftop stage overlooking the Strip, and host up-and-coming country acts “right in the middle of everything,” according to Shelton.

The name “Ole Red” honors a song from Shelton’s 2001 debut album; the venue also has three locations in Tennessee (with a fourth on its way), one in Oklahoma, and one in Florida. The Las Vegas venue is planned to open sometime in 2023 and will occupy an entire corner of the Grand Bazaar Shops in Bally’s front yard.

—Unknown Let’s start 2022 with an attitude adjustment and a positive outlook.

Put 2020 and 2021 on the back burner and count our blessings instead of our woes. And speaking of blessings, a recent one of ours was joining our two daughters on a cruise. We were celebrating their birthdays, and, unlike us, they had never cruised. Robert and I adore cruising because there’s nothing more relaxing than listening to ocean waves while sipping a liquid refreshment in a souvenir glass. The girls, as we refer to our daughters who are ages 50 and 54, had a glorious time. Our oldest was chosen to participate in a Deal or No Deal game show and won a tidy sum. Our youngest cheered her sister on and she won a tidy sum in the casino. As their parents we cheered them both on, then went to bed hours before they even considered hitting the sack.

All four of us played Bingo on the last day, but it was expensive ($48 each) for three games; the blackout game paid a measly $800 although there was a sizable audience. The jackpot was advertised as $2,000, but after everyone bought cards, players were informed the big money was only valid if the Bingo was called in 49 numbers or less. Regular Bingo players know this rarely happens.

My advice is that if you love Bingo,

sign up for the Bingo Bugle Annual World Championship Cruise. The 2022 cruise leaves Port Miami on November 5, 2022, for an 8-day cruise of the Caribbean. The games will pay out over $100,000 in cash! Now that’s what I call prize money. Robert and I did it and loved the experience including the Bingo although we did not win any bucks, big or small.

Here’s some other cruising trivia.

One of the first amenities offered on cruising steamships in the 1840s was an on-board cow to supply passengers with fresh milk, as well as three cats to keep rats away.

Next, you can now book a clothing optional nude cruise. A company called Bare Necessities charters a cruise for around 3,000 nudists once a year on a vessel called The Big Nude Boat. Hm-m-m, seems appropriate. If you sign up, keep in mind the outrageous complaint made by one woman on a nude cruise. She said her cruise was ruined because her husband spent all day staring at other women. Imagine that. Or imagine what a nude cruise Bingo session would be like; not my cup of tea.

However, that reminds me of when some friends, Robert, and I visited a nude beach in St Martins. We were all sitting on the sand, fully clothed like ninnies, when Janet and I decided to get information about excursions from a nearby stand. Much to our chagrin, the young fellow selling tickets was naked as a jaybird. Needless to say, we kept our eyes above board as he explained the costs. We couldn’t remember a thing he said after we returned to our husbands.

They had watched our too close encounter with the nude dude and were laughing so hard tears were rolling down their cheeks.

Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.

Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received.

Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize.

Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month’s contest.

Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing.

By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes.

Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize.

The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.
