High School Reunion Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo, I thought I’d pass along this story about a Bingo game idea I came up with for my 25th high school reunion.

Some high school classmates and I made up the planning committee for the reunion.

Because the 25th is such a “big one,” We wanted to come up with some activities that were fun and unusual—something more than the typical music and dancing in the gym.

As a group we settled on a casino night theme, which we knew would fit in well with the party atmosphere of the reunion.

Because I am a Bingo fan, I suggested that we add Bingo to the casino games. The suggestion got a half-hearted vote of approval from the committee, but I felt it would be a hit and really pushed hard to get it added. Everyone got a lot more supportive after I assured them I would take on all the responsibility of arranging it, and they finally okayed it as part of the reunion.

We hired a company that did casino-style events, and I found a place where you could rent Bingo equipment and get Bingo supplies.

One of the teachers at the school was a caller at one of the local Bingos and she volunteered to call for us and bring a couple of helpers.

Our 25th reunion got a very good turnout for a school our size—close to 250 people. Quite a few said that the casino-night theme was what finally convinced them to attend, which made all of us on the planning committee feel very good.

The gym was set up for the main music/dancing/socializing part of the reunion; a couple of other rooms were used as lounges and for a silent auction and some other activities; and the cafeteria was split between the casino games and the Bingo.

For the first hour or so we were a little worried because everyone was hanging out in the gym and not visiting any of the other rooms. Eventually people began to spread out and a handful of guys showed up at the casino room. They got pretty loud at the roulette wheel, which caught others’ attention and drew more folks to the games. Pretty soon we had a really good crowd in the casino room.

JANUARY 2021 at the Bingo tables and I hurried over to give them Bingo paper and daubers. They were polite and said thank you, then kind of pushed the Bingo stuff to the side. I realized they weren’t sitting down to play Bingo, they were simply there to chat with friends.

I spotted another group and tried to give them Bingo paper, but they wouldn’t even take it. I was in a panic—my Bingo event was bombing.

I ran down the hallway and spotted a bunch of my old high school friends, and asked (actually, begged) them to come play Bingo and get things going.

They agreed, and followed me to the Bingo games. There were maybe 12 of us total.

The caller fired up the machine and announced that Bingo was starting. Nobody else came over.

She announced two more times, and a handful of people sat down. The caller gave me a look and shrugged, then she started calling the numbers (for a total of maybe 20 players). That’s when it dawned on me that once the game began, nobody else could join in.

Not good.

My friends and I made the best of it and broke the cardinal rule of no talking at Bingo and wound up laughing and talking and having a great time. When my friend, Kim, finally Bingoed, she screamed it really loud and we all shouted and laughed and made a big deal out of it, and the caller did the same when she gave Kim a wrapped prize—which Kim tore open to reveal was a mini crock pot.

Our noisy fun (thanks, girls!) and that prize (who doesn’t love appliances?) caught the attention of a lot of people, and a small crowd sat down for the next game.

The Bingo helpers and I scrambled to pass out Bingo paper and daubers and keep the games moving, which they did for quite some time. I’ll admit that there were a lot of empty seats— apparently live music, dancing, and casino games trump Bingo— but enough classmates told me that the Bingo was a fun addition that I have no regrets about making it part of the reunion. — Meg P., New York, via email Dear Meg, As I was reading your letter I got a bit of a knot in my stomach as I realized that this story had the potential for a wonderful, or very embarrassing, ending.

911 Partnering With VA Crisis Link We know to call 911 for an emergency, but we’ll soon be getting an additional number.

Starting in the summer of 2022, we’ll also have 988 as a direct line for suicide prevention and mental health crises.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Department of Veteran Affairs and the North American Numbering Council all have been working together, and this summer the FCC adopted rules to designate this number — 988.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will still be working at 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273TALK). As different parts of the country come online, those calling the new number will be transferred over to the crisis line, but the old number will continue to work.

A Sweet New Year’s Eve This month, due to Bingo hall closures in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, I’m sharing a “Best of the Bingo Sisters” from a New Year’s past. Enjoy and have a safe and happy New Year.

After such a wonderful Christmas I did not expect much from New Year’s Eve, but that’s where I was wrong. Once more Cliff and Rod spirited us away, only much later in the day, and we ended up going to a different casino where not only Bingo was played, but the new Bingo machines were up and running.

I had to try one immediately and was distressed at how fast I lost my money. There was no big build-up to the win, and I got dumped very quickly.

“We have to find a real Bingo game,” I said. “One where I don’t lose in the first few seconds.”

“Aha,” said Rod. “I have that

JANUARY 2021 all set up for you. Come with me.” And he hauled me off to the Bingo game room, bought us in and urged me to find a place to sit.

I was delighted. The room was colorfully decorated for New Year’s Eve. Cliff and Kate joined us, and we settled in for the play.

We played unremarkably until the New Year’s Eve Special was announced.

“Tonight is very special,” said the caller. “We are playing a game of ‘R’ for a very special lady who is in the audience.”

Rod looked sweet and rather bashful, “Yes, it’s for you,” he said quietly.

The caller said, “It’s the entire I row, the top N, the top three G’s, then the next to last N and the last G. With the free space, it makes a perfect R. No B’s or O’s.

The pattern is showing in all the monitors.”

I was so excited I could scarcely sit still. My own game. Rodney had arranged this just for me.

I leaned over and kissed him lightly on the cheek.

“What a lovely New Year’s gift,” I said.

Kate suddenly leaped up and came around the table to give Rod a kiss on the cheek.

“What a neat thing to do for my favorite sister,” she said. Of course, I knew I was her only sister, but that didn’t detract from her gesture.

We launched into play and it proved to be difficult but very exciting. Soon Cliff and I were both on and for the same number, G-57. I don’t think that has ever

happened before. That is, for two people in the same party to be on for the same number. We both chanted away for our number, but sadly it did not come up.

Someone else won my coveted R. Oh well, it had been fun and very exciting.

Rod and I walked up to the caller to thank him for the good evening and for my game.

“Happy to do it,” he said cheerfully. “And the contribution to the cause didn’t hurt either.”

He dropped a wink at Rod. “I hope you have a great New Year’s Eve.” I put my arm around Rod’s waist.

“It’s time for dinner, don’t you think?” I asked playfully. “And this time, I’m buying.”

I hope you all had as good a holiday season as was possible.

During the past few months, I moved, from Las Vegas, where I had been for a few years (after moving from Palm Springs), to a small hamlet in southern Indiana. The tiny town is about fifteen minutes from my hometown and just thirty-five minutes from my sole sibling— my sister.

It was quite a change moving from Vegas—where I was able to play Bingo as often as I wished— to a city where the closest Bingo is half-an-hour away and infrequent. But I’ll make the best of it. At least I have some great memories of Bingo games in the past. This time around I’d like to go back to a wonderful-smelling, tiny hall on the outskirts of New Orleans, where I played a decade ago.

I don’t remember the name of the place, but I DO remember that the proceeds went to a local charity. I like playing in those kinds of halls the best. The first thing I noticed when I walked into the place was a swirling combination of amazing cooking odors. The hall had the usual caller’s stand, the rows of tables, but, along one side were two long tables filled with a huge array of foods. It was a combination food

court and Bingo hall.

Among the foods was a huge selection of—you guessed it— CAJUN cooking. Everything from boiled crawfish and shrimp, to jambalaya, gumbo, Po’ Boy sandwiches and something called Marque Choux. One of the locals told me it was pronounced “Mock Shoe.” It was a sloppy dish made with onions and peppers, cooked down in butter. The cooks then added garlic, corn, tomatoes and a generous splash of heavy cream.

It’s a thick kind of goo that was served in paper “buckets.”

Just as I was about to quickly order, since I was nearly late for the Early Bird Games, I noticed that at the table next to the Cajun cooking was a display of Chinese foods. What kind of combination was that? When I mentioned to someone in line with me that I didn’t expect that kind of array in one place, I was told that it was common.

Near the airport was a Chineseand-Cajun restaurant. Only in Louisiana!

So, Bob, what did you eat?

Well, glad you asked. I got a little of everything and made my way through the hall and found the seat where I had left my purchased Bingo cards. I ate as slowly as I could. After all, who needs the Early Birds when you’ve got jambalaya and AND egg rolls? Oh, and don’t forget the Marque Choux.

I’m a recovering stand-up comic.

My story is typical. I had a great job, great friends, a relationship with a future. Then I did an open mike night on a bet. I thought I was smarter than comedy. I thought I couldn’t get hooked. But soon I was doing comedy 2, 3 4, 5 nights a week. In no time, my life became unmanageable. I couldn’t get through a day without a few lines, some gag. I wasn’t proud of it.

I lost my job because I couldn’t “be serious.”

I drove my cats away with my incessant teasing.

Finally, even my boyfriend left. I was devastated. He wasn’t just my boyfriend… he was really great material.

Back then there wasn’t rehab for comics, so I tried to heal myself. I tried a lot of things. Instead of being onstage at open mikes, I sat in the audience and listened to countless amateur comics. That was an eye opener, but not even the 2-drink minimum could erase the specter of what I had become.

Then in a flash of inspiration I created Comics Anonymous to help comics get their lives back.

Comics Anonymous has partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to get comics off the road. So if a policeman pulls you over for driving funny, you’ll be asked to get out of your car and give a straight line.

Yes, on my road to recovery.

Bingo is a Family Affair With the novel corona virus continuing to effect Bingo operations across North America at press time, we decided to reach back into the mailbag this month to re-visit some reader stories about our favorite game.

Hi Guy, This week when I was at Bingo, I was hit with one of my biggest dreads—a woman with two small kids arrived at Bingo late after I was all settled in and sat at my table.

I could just imagine how the evening would go, with these two little squirmers fussing and complaining and being bored while I tried to ignore them and concentrate on the numbers.

So, I was surprised and a little ashamed when they sat quietly in their chairs and did coloring books and drawings and minded their manners for the entire night.

When the games ended and we were all packing up to leave, I made a point of telling the kids how impressed I was with their good behavior and complimented their Mom for the good job she was doing raising them. The woman positively lit up when I said this and said that as a single Mom, she did worry about how good of a job she was doing.

It gave me a second pang of shame that it had not occurred to me that this woman brought her kids to Bingo because she clearly had no other option. I decided from that moment that I would not be so quick to look negatively on a single parent and his or her kids in social situations. —Henry, via email Hi Henry, I’m a total sucker for kids— except for the ones you feared you might be confronted with— noisy, misbehaving brats who should not be allowed in public.

I’m glad you realized that we should never assume the worst when it comes to kids at Bingo.

While some folks argue that Bingo is gambling and children should not be “exposed” to it, others, like me, see it as a game and have no problem with kids playing or simply being in the hall with an adult. Well behaved kids, that is. —Guy

Changing video poker machines One of the most controversial topics amongst video poker players is changing machines.

I’m going to throw my two cents in and share with you my perspective on this topic. Many video poker players will change machines when they are losing.

They believe that their machine is “cold” and by switching to another machine, they, hopefully, will land on a “hot machine.”

There are some perfectly good reasons for switching but doing it “to change your luck” isn’t one of them. The cards on a video poker machine are selected randomly.

The cards don’t know (and don’t care) whether you are on a cold (or hot) steak. Therefore, from a strictly mathematical viewpoint, changing machines from a game you are currently playing to another machine to play the same game with the same pay table isn’t a guarantee that your luck will change. You will get most likely, different results in the short term

JANUARY 2021 on your new machine, but you don’t know beforehand whether it will better or worse.

However, there are some other reasons why you might consider switching machines.

They include a “sticking” button on the machine, a blurry screen, cold air blowing on you from an overhead air conditioner vent, smoke being blown in your direction from a smoker, or having an “overly chatty” player next to you.

However, the bottom line is this: If the expected return (ER) for the game you are playing on machine A is the same as machine B, from a mathematical viewpoint, it doesn’t make any difference which machine you play.

I often add this caveat: If you don’t have an expected return (ER) over 100% when you play, changing machines could lower your hourly loss because it will decrease the number of hands you play per hour (this assumes you would hop around from one machine to another several times during a session). In addition, by pausing from the action and giving your brain a rest when you switch machines, it could help you avoid making playing mistakes, which often occurs when players play video poker machines non-stop for long periods.

As you can see, I take a rather hardline, scientific view on the topic of switching machines. (I am a trained scientist, after all.)

Enter Frank Kneeland, author of the book The Secret World of Video Poker Progressives, and who also wrote an article about changing machines as a strategy in my Blackjack Insider Newsletter. I’ve summarized below a few points that he made on this topic.

When a player is sure he will do

better after changing machines, they really have no data to compare with simply because they can’t clone themselves and continue playing on the first machine, and then compare the results with the second machine.

If a player happens to get “better” results after changing machines, he will point to this fact as proof that changing machines makes a difference. This is a natural human tendency to overrate how much control a player thinks he has over an event, such as the output of the results of the random number generator (RNG) in a video poker machine (this is known in psychological circles as Illusionary Control).

Our less-than-perfect human minds are primed to look for patterns. Suppose instead of changing machines, you changed underwear.

Some of your underwear will result in a “hot session” while other result in a “cold session.” You might start favoring your “lucky” underwear when you play video poker. I hope you realize that your choice of underwear doesn’t affect what hands you are dealt or what draw cards you get when you play video poker. Neither does changing machines.

Bottom line: Changing machines as a playing strategy won’t work in the long run.

And so, a new year begins.

Amid the doom and gloom of the CO-19 pandemic, hope springs eternal that 2021 will see the end of this plague; that we are able to crawl out of our caves and into a joyous future. And speaking of the future, what about the future of bingo? I can’t believe I’ve been playing bingo for over fifty years.

From bean markers to magnetic plastic markers, to bingo daubers, to the bingo computers of today, bingo players have evolved and adapted to new technology as bingo’s popularity grew.

Although the game itself remains mostly the same since Edwin Lowe discovered the beano version in 1929, the how and where we play are constantly changing. The how means playing more cards and more complicated games on computers; whereas, the where refers to playing online at any time of the day or night from wherever you are.

Bingo is no longer an old person’s game with the advent of online gaming on laptops and cell phones. Speaking of which, everyone seems to be attached to a cell phone even during meals.

Some families lock up all phones at mealtime in order for them to

eat and be able to carry on lucid conversations. I know first-hand about this as our granddaughters and daughters are guilty as charged. Robert and I hate it, but we haven’t resorted to confiscation as yet. Instead, we request they put their phones away. If ignored, we yell like demented monkeys. As a last resort, we threaten to yank phones from clammy hands and toss them in the fireplace where they will burn brightly as we dance around singing burn, baby, burn. A little extreme—but call us old fashioned in that we want our loved ones to interact with us instead of with tiny screens that cannot hug them back.

Moving on, January is National Soup Month. My favorite is chili with a cold glass of milk. Mine is basic with tomato juice, kidney beans, hamburger, onions, and spices. When we were wintering in Laughlin, Nevada, we loved their chili cook-off. I never entered, but we appreciated tasting all the varieties. Each cook had secret ingredients, never to be shared, with one exception.

Whoever won the cookoff was to share the winning recipe in the local paper. Each did, but truth be told, following the shared recipe did not produce the same taste as the chili prepared for the cookoff. I’m not saying that certain ingredients were omitted on purpose, but that’s what I’m thinking. It reminds me of when I asked my sister-in- law for her brownie recipe. I made a batch following her directions and ended up with a gooey concoction that resembled thick fudge. I called her and she laughed. She had forgotten to list flour. But you know what? That batch of goo was delicious on ice cream. I know how to adapt when the need calls for it.

Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.

Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received.

Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize.

Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month's contest.

Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing.

By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize.

The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.

Please, don't call the Bingo Bugle office to find out who the winner is, we won't tell you. And, if it is you, you will be disqualified.
