Bingo Night has returned to the Village of Butler. This is great news. They offer Bingo on the 3rd Saturday in February, March, April and May. Weather Frightful; Bingo Delightful Story reporting by Aunt Bingo It was a glorious, sunny winter’s day, but try as he might, Brad Fielding could not convince his three sons, their four friends, or the two Fielding labs to get out from in front of the TV or computer or iPad and go outdoors and enjoy the snow. “I can remember as a kid being outdoors for hours; only the dark of night could drag us into the house on a winter weekend,” Brad says. “It drove me nuts standing t h e r e looking at seven p u d g y boys laying around. I had to get them outside d o i n g something!” Sledding, skating, and skiing had all been tried, but failed to capture the boys’ interest. Brad knew he needed a game of some sort. His eyes scanned the stacks of board games on the family room shelf until one in particular caught his eye. “It was Bingo,” Brad says. “Simple, competitive, with some kind of prize at the end—it was just the thing.” Brad pulled the Bingo game box from the shelf and rifled through the contents. He pulled a handful of cards out of the box as models, then headed to the kitchen and

got to work. “I came up with what I called ‘Snow Bank Bingo,’” he says. He used paint to make the Bingo card grid and paper plates for the numbers, which he laid out in the two-foot deep snow. “The boys would be the daubers,” he says. “I was just finishing the last card and was getting ready to go inside and get the boys, when I turned around to see all of them in their coats and boots coming out to see what I was up to. They must have seen me from the window.” At the foot of each “card” Brad had placed a plastic outdoor armchair. He instructed each of the boys to choose one of the chairs and stand on it. “I began calling numbers, and when I called one that was on their card, they would jump off the chair and land on the paper plate that had the same number,” he says. “Part of the game was that they would have to struggle out of the snow and get back up on their chair without disturbing the rest of the numbers on the grid, if they did, they lost a turn. You never saw seven boys work so hard to get a Bingo and not lose a turn.” Brad said the boys were pretty worn out by the end of the first game, but begged him to call a second, and a third. “The whole thing was hilarious,” Brad says, “especially after my wife let our labs out. The boys were frantic that the dogs would ruin their Bingo cards and spent as much time chasing them away as they did playing the game.” Eventually the skies grew dark and Brad had to call an end to Snow Bank Bingo. “You should have seen them; they were crushed,” he laughs. “But I promised them we’d play again, which we have. “I’m pretty proud of myself for coming up with the idea.” Brad says. “If other people read this story, maybe they’ll try it, too. Trust me, the kids will love it.”

Buddy Check 22

Buddy Check 22 is an American Legion program that reaches out to possibly at-risk veterans. The “22” in the name is most significant: it is the average number of veteran suicides per day. On the 22nd of each month, veterans in Buddy Check will call (or text or email or drop by) another veteran to let them know they’re not alone. Whether it’s PTSD, suicidal thoughts, difficulty coping or anything else, BC22 veterans will be there to help. Do you have a Buddy Check program in your area? Do you participate in either the national or a local group? Some local groups go beyond the phone calls and host monthly meetings and events. By providing a venue for making social connections and getting suicide prevention information, veterans come to know they’re not alone. Get there through the WarriorNOW Nightly Buddy Check at warriornow.org/buddycheck. WarriorNOW is a nonprofit committed to veteran mental health and suicide prevention. If you or someone you know is struggling, call Veteran’s Crisis Line 1-800-273-8255 and press 1. Recently the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan bill to designate one week per year as “Buddy Check Week.” During that week, veteran mentors will learn how to do buddy checks and to access the support their buddies need. The bill would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to pitch in with education and materials for mentors to help their buddies. The House of Representatives, however, went home for the year without addressing the Buddy Check bill. They referred it to a subcommittee, where it now sits.

PICKS OF THE MONTH Cobra Kai (TV-14) — One of the most popular binge-watch selections of the entire pandemic time arrives at its final season. When Season 3 left off, the students of dueling dojos MiyagiDo, Eagle Fang and Cobra Kai had an epic group fight at the LaRusso house, with one of the biggest feuds being that between Sam LaRusso and instigator Tory. No doubt this ongoing animosity will elevate in Season 4. We also know Jon Kreese’s old buddy Terry Silver (from Karate Kid III) shows up to lend a heavy hand toward Kreese’s plot to raise Cobra Kai dojo back to champion level at the All-Valley Karate Tournament. What remains to be seen is whether Daniel and Johnny will finally work together to defeat Kreese once and for all. So pop a cold Coors Banquet and pick your team; this series will no doubt end with a bang. (Netflix) Sergio Mendes in the Key of Joy (NR) — This documentary about Brazilian musical legend Sergio Mendes debuted at the 2020 Santa Barbara International Film Festival but bears another mention. Fellow musicians including John Legend and Quincy Jones honor Mendes’ achievements and catalog of work over the past 60 years. The composer, vocalist

and musical pioneer credited with bringing Brazilian music to the world is heralded and honored for his creative contributions and inspiration to musicians everywhere. (Peacock) Lady of the Manor (R) — Starring Melanie Lynskey (who will always be to me the one who had “a baby ... in a bar” in “Sweet Home Alabama”), this movie is cleverly original. Lynskey plays Hannah, an unenthusiastic, costumed docent at a historical estate. When she begins seeing and conversing with the ghost of the woman whom she portrays on her tours, she gains a new motivation to change her act. Judy Greer as the spirit Lady Wadsworth is both charming and snarky, ping-ponging between instructing Hannah on the proper history of the manor and being mystified by present-day technology. (Prime Video) The ‘80s: Top Ten — I don’t even care what he’s counting down; if Rob Lowe is hosting, I’m watching. In each of six episodes, Lowe will count down a different top 10 list about various 1980s pop culture topics, with input from celebrities of “the decade that we just can’t quit,” including Jon Lovitz and Joan Collins. After debuting Dec. 31 on Disney+, the series will switch over to NatGeo. (Disney+)

Beginner’s Luck Our good friend, Shannon, brought a new player to the Saturday night game. This was an older woman named Esther who walked with the aid of a speedy wheeled walker. Much fuss was made over making sure Esther had the right game cards. Shannon assured the workers she would help, but still they watched over her with care. I even caught myself looking to make sure she was on the right game. Once she was on—I could tell by the way Shannon behaved, alternately watching Esther’s cards and glancing at the monitor, paying little attention to her own cards. I had to tell Shannon she had a

FEBRUARY 2022 Bingo, and even then, I thought she called her win rather reluctantly. It became apparent that Esther wanted to win rather badly and resented anyone around her winning. Shannon wanted to give the win to Esther, but there was no way she could do that, nor would Esther have let her do so. Esther wanted to win on her own with no help from anyone, thank you. The games went on with Kate and Shannon splitting a win, which drew a furious look from our newcomer. At intermission I walked over to Esther and said, “Well, are you having a good time?” “No, I am not,” came the instant reply. “The only time Bingo is fun is when you win.”

I offered a drink out of my thermos of lemonade. Esther looked away. Shannon just shrugged and worked harder at the cards. As we played the special game of the arrow in any corner, Esther became frustrated with the confusing pattern. She missed a Bingo when the next number was called and pounded the table in frustration. We all felt guilty. By the time of the final blackout, Kate and I were not even looking in Esther’s direction. We worked busily on our own cards. I won the onthe-way game and was very excited. Shannon kept checking the cards against the lighted game board to make double and triple sure she hadn’t missed a number. Then finally, on the sixty-first number, Esther won. She did not erupt into delight but sat back with a satisfied smile on her face. “Now that’s more like it,” she said. We waited to walk out with them after Esther collected her winnings and Kate observed, “It’s such a beautiful night, I feel like giving thanks for just being able to enjoy it.” “And for winning,” added Esther.

Let’s Go Behind the Scenes First of all, let me thank everyone who has written to me at the e-mail address: bobonbingo@earthlink. net. I always love to hear your thoughts about the game we all love the best. This time around, I answer a request from CWS, of Vancouver, WA: “Bob, would you take us behind the scenes at an average, non-casino Bingo hall and let us know what goes on to make sure everything comes off OK each week?” Sure, CWS, here goes. This is the timeline for a 6 p.m. Bingo session at an average small-town charity hall. 3:30: The first workers arrive. Because the session will be played in a large hall used as a school cafeteria, a few things need to be

FEBRUARY 2022 changed for the session. First of all, the Bingo caller’s podium and the microphones need to be brought out from a nearby storage closet. Additionally, all four of the wallmounted TV monitors need to be turned on and the system tested. The balls need to be counted and checked and the tote board needs to be fully checked. Meanwhile, others are making sure all the tables and chairs are arranged. In addition to this, all the Bingo cards must be gotten out of storage and arranged on one of the tables in the sales area. The cash box is retrieved and checked. Necessary state paperwork is taken care of. The final thing is to get out the boxes of pull-tabs and inventory them. More state paperwork. 5:30: The doors open and the first players file in. Between now and the Early-Early Birds (slated for 6:00) the first Bingo cards (and daubers) are sold and runners begin to walk about selling pulltabs. 6:00: The first Early-Early Bird games begin. Then, at 6:30, the regular Early Bird games start. 7:00: The caller officially welcomes everyone and takes care of any special business that might proceed the regular games. This might include special promotions or gimmicks that are peculiar to that hall. In many halls the first Regular Game is the “Letter X.” This is a slow, longer game that allows for latecomers to catch up. 8:10: The first half of the Regular Session ends and there is a

Then, the workers clean, do the paperwork, lock up the equipment and return the cafeteria to its intended purpose. The final workers leave about 10:30. For we players, it looks so easy. For the workers it’s been a long night. Next time, your letters.

Clean, chop, slice and otherwise prepare all your produce choices for the week on the day you shop. When it’s ready and waiting, you’re less likely to skip it in favor of something more convenient (and likely less nutritious). * To prevent candle wax from sticking to a candleholder, swipe the inside with a little olive oil. It’ll do the trick!

Budgeting Bingo Hi Guy, Do you have an idea of how much is OK to spend on Bingo or cards or whatever and how much is too much? I spend maybe $200 a month, not counting any winnings, which my wife says is too much and constantly upsets her. Our retirement income is over $60,000 a year, so $200 a month for a year is less than 5 percent of that, which I don’t think is extravagant. And Bingo and cards are something I enjoy doing. It seems to me that people spend more than that on hobbies. I have the $200 budget and I stick to it. I also have my winnings—which I also will use. It’s good that you did the math and know fairly closely the percentage of your income you are using for Bingo and other gaming. You are pretty vague, however, when you discuss the winnings that you say you “also will use.” This is a gray area if you do not keep close track of exactly how much you have won as well. If you don’t, you may “use” the $500 you won in December as an excuse for additional gambling and end up spending two or three times as much in the belief that you are still only spending that original $500. If you keep tabs on both of those numbers—budget and winnings— and show your wife that you are doing so and exactly what those figures are, I think it will go a long way in reassuring her that you are not gambling away your retirement income. —Guy Hi Guy, I am running into a problem with the Bingo monitors at Bingo. They are getting harder for me to see. If I get a seat closer it helps, but lots of times those seats are taken by the time I get to Bingo. I rely on the monitors to help keep up with the pace of the game and so I can play multiple packs. Any advice? —Bill R., Florida

There are a number of things you should consider. First, get your butt to Bingo earlier so that you get a seat close to a monitor. Why do you think all the seats are taken? Because they all get there before you! Next, you may have to face the reality that it’s time for you to play less packs. If you need to rely more on the caller and less on the monitor, having less cards to play will help even out the pace of the games. Finally, have you considered electronic Bingo? Lots of folks who want to play multiple packs but don’t have the speed to keep up with the caller and worry they are making mistakes turn to electronic Bingo as a backup. I would bet dollars to doughnuts the majority of video poker players would play the game with the pay schedule listed in the first column. Why? Because most players are attracted to the video poker games that have bigger payoffs for fourof-a-kind hands (which is the case for the game in column one vs. column two). Let’s take a closer look at the two pay schedules. Besides the game in column one paying more for fourof-a-kind hands it also pays more

FEBRUARY 2022 for a paying straight (5 coins vs. 4 coins). Thus far, it looks like column one has the better pay schedule, but hold off just a second. Glance down to the payoffs for two pair and what do you see? A one-coin payoff for column one and two coin payoff for column two. No big deal you say, well, guess what? It is a big deal. Deciding which video poker game to play based on how much four-of-a-kind hands pay is not the right way to go about selecting a video poker game. What ultimately determines which game you should play is the game’s expected return (or ER). The ER is a percentage that tells you what the expected theoretical return is for a game (if you play every hand correctly over millions of hands). You won’t find the ER listed on video poker machines. However, it is readily available in books, strategy cards, and video poker sites on the internet. If you don’t know what the ER is of the game you are playing in a casino, you shouldn’t be playing it. Generally, the greater the ER, the better the game is for the player. I won’t keep you in suspense any longer…the game in column one is Double Bonus Poker and the game in column two is Jacks-or-Better (or sometimes called Draw Poker). Both are popular games that you’ll find on video poker machines. The ER for the Double Bonus game in column one is 97.8% whereas for the Jacks-or-Better game in column two, it’s 99.5% (assuming the royal flush pays 1,000 coins for max coins played). You might think that difference in percent is not a big deal but it really is if you’re serious about winning. Your goal should be to play only video poker games that have the highest ER in a casino (and the casino manager isn’t going to tell you where these games are located…it’s up to you to find them and play them). Using strategy cards and video poker training software are two tools that can help any player (even a beginner) play video poker like a pro. You shouldn’t even think about playing video poker unless you use these tools to optimize your game.

Adele Could Earn $2 Million a Show As Anthony Curtis says in the latest LVA YouTube video, pop superstar Adele is being treated like the biggest entertainer ever to grace a Las Vegas stage. Billboard and a number of UK gossip papers report that Adele could rake in $50 million from her 24-show residency at the Colosseum at Caesars this year. The $2 million or more per show would double Lady Gaga’s guaranteed million per. Billboard also reported that $50 million worth of tickets sold out on in six hours. That’s amazing enough, but especially given the ticket prices, which started at $315 for nosebleed seats, then rose to $450 for the third- and secondto-the-back sections, $600 for the front upper balcony, $860 for the front of the theater, and $4,500 in the orchestra. According to the press release, Emmitt’s will be located “within walking distance from numerous Las Vegas hot spots and have access to some of the heaviest foot traffic in the city, as it will be accessible via a unique pedestrian footbridge that spans high above the Las Vegas Strip.” Emmitt’s will take over the former Sugar Factory space at the Fashion Show Mall. Station Proposes New Casino Station Casinos’ proposal for a one-story, 21,000-square-foot Wildfire Casino, situated on five acres on Fremont Street just south of Charleston Boulevard, was discussed by the Las Vegas Planning Commission recently. If approved and built, it would probably be similar to Stations other Wildfire casinos, with slots, a sports book, and a restaurant. John Legend Residency Singer John Legend, a 12-time Grammy winner, will play 24 dates at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood this year: April 22, 23, 27, 29, and 30; May 4, 6, and 7, August 5, 6, 10, 12, 13, 17, 19, and 20; and October 14, 15, 19, 21, 22, 26, 28, and 29. “Love in Las Vegas” will showcase Legend’s greatest hits. New Bridge across the Colorado Preliminary work has begun on the $52 million construction project that will add a second bridge across the Colorado River between Laughlin and Bullhead City, Arizona. The bridge is a joint venture between Bullhead City and Clark County, which share a local economy, as many Arizona residents cross the river to work in Laughlin. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

This salute is so appropriate because Best Friends Day is the 19th and he has been mine for forty-four plus years. He shares the cooking and cleaning; does all the laundry; grocery shops with coupons and babies me when I’m sick. I’m a lucky gal and I know it, but, speaking of gals, February 1st is Spunky Old Broads (S.O.B.) Day. This idea was originated by Dr. Gayle Carson. She believed that all women, and especially women after fifty and older, should be celebrated for their accomplishments and for the fabulous women they have become. For younger ladies looking forward to being future spunky old broads, read Dr. Carson’s book, How to Be an S.O.B-A Spunky Old Broad Who Kicks Butt. You can find it on Amazon. I like to think I’m included in that groovy group of SOBs; not to be confused with my Robert who’s also an SOB, Sweet Old Bob. Years ago, I would scurry off to Bingo alone and Robert would stay home and do what husbands do when their wives aren’t around

to entertain them. Scary thought. Afterwards I would update him on the gossip and share how I won, lost, or had near misses on one game or another. Over time he decided to go with me now and then, and before you can say avid Bingo player, he was hooked. We don’t play as much as I used to do because we like to play during the day. Night driving and old people like us who go to bed early aren’t compatible with late night Bingo sessions. Besides that, our snoring if we accidentally doze off between games would irritate the other players; not that Bingo isn’t exciting, because it surely is. It’s just that we have a habit of nodding off at home while watching TV and often miss the endings of our favorite programs. However, we’ve found out the hard way that Bingo is not the place to catch a quick nap at intermission as you might end up with dauber ink decorating your face. Don’t ask how we know that. On another topic, bet you didn’t know that February 22 is National Margarita Day. Oh yes, one of my favorite drinks. I read that on the average, Americans consume 185,000 margaritas per hour and that makes the United States the number one tequila market. I also bet you didn’t know that the world’s largest margarita ever was made in Las Vegas. It was 8,500 gallons and served in a seventeen-foottall tank with sixty people working three hundred hours to create it. Called the Lucky Rita, it celebrated the opening of the Flamingo Hotel’s Margaritaville Casino in 2011. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle.
