With its pristine turquoise clear waters, clean white sandy beaches, and assorted activities and dining options, visiting this 2,400-acre island is sure to be a highlight of your cruise journey. Half Moon Cay features a two-mile stretch of beach that forms a half-moon shape, which gives it its name. The land is covered by green vegetation and dotted with colorful cabanas and beach villas. It is one of 700 islands that make up the archipelago of the Bahamas. The waters at its shores are not deep enough for docking so cruise guests access it by riding tender boats. Hiking is a popular pastime on Half Moon Cay, as only about two percent of the island has been developed, leaving guests with many acres of indigenous flora and fauna to explore. There are paved and sandy nature
trails winding through the island, some of which lead to shore excursion starting points like Stingray Cove, Bonefish Lagoon and Pegasus horse ranch. Excursion activities include horseback riding, snorkeling, kayaking, watercraft adventures, boat rides, stingray adventures, and eco bikerides that double as an island tour. There are more than 40 bird species on the island for bird-watching fans. The most common are waterfowl such as sooty terns, egrets, ruddy ducks, heron and Caribbean coots. Many of these can be seen at the Brackish Lagoon, a Bahamian wild bird preserve. Half Moon Cay has an aqua park with an islandthemed action fun area. While it is designed for kids, the young-at-heart may also enjoy a visit to this fun-filled area. But

There is this woman at my Bingo who I think is absolutely adorable. When she sets up for Bingo, she lays out a little plastic tablecloth (a different color or pattern from week to week), then sets her Bingo paper and markers down very neatly on it, then places her lucky items just so, and finally puts out a small vase
of dried flowers (which change throughout the season) at the corner of her little display. It is all so pretty and neat—it looks like she is preparing to entertain dinner guests. We have all noticed her, and finally I asked her why she brings this setup with her each time she comes to Bingo. She explained to me that she loves Bingo and looks forward to it every time she goes, and decided she wanted to make it more of an event. She said she got the idea from watching Martha Stewart, who she said even makes digging in her garden look stylish. “This is my version of ‘Martha Stewart goes to Bingo,’” she said with a huge grin. I loved her explanation, and beginning next week, I am bringing a little vase of flowers with me, too—as long as I can find one that fits into my Bingo bag. Lola, via e-mail Dear Lola,

They call them “the unbanked,” people who don’t use banks for any reason. At this point there are 250,000 veterans without bank accounts. Without one, they can receive their benefits only through a prepaid debit card or a paper check. Last year, the Department of Veterans Affairs established the Veterans Benefits Banking Program, and 25,000 veterans so far have signed up, mostly because of the convenience, safety and money-saving aspects. Having a bank account can save you a trip to the convenience store to buy a money order... as well as the fee to pay for it. Just sit at home and write a check at your leisure. Pop it in the mail and off it goes. Once a bank knows you for a little while, you’ll be in a better position to apply for a loan or a credit card. Netflix has a new documentary series that explores some very niche competitions. It’s called We Are the Champions, and if you’re not watching it, you’re missing out. Rainn Wilson narrates a collection of weird and wonderful battles in such diverse subject matter as competitive hair design, hot pepper consumption and chasing a wheel of cheese down an impossibly steep hill. It’s all great fun, but I found myself yelling at the TV, completely emotionally invested in someone’s progress. And so much laughing. Of course, like most easily digestible and highly entertaining series, it was over in what felt like a minute—leaving me searching for more. So here are a few movies that satisfy a weirdly competitive itch, some more mainstream than others. Pitch Perfect — Serious musical ambitions almost stop Beca (Anna Kendrick) from joining an all-girl singing group her freshman year at college. Fortunately, a deal with her dad keeps her on the Bellas. Pitted against the winning all-male Treblemakers, who also have aca-aspirations for the
financial institutions, your benefits won’t have to get to you in the mail. You won’t have to pay check-cashing fees either. And paying a bill by check is proof that you paid it. Bring It On — The Rancho Carne Toros’ new cheer captain Torrence (Kirsten Dunst) inherits a national title-winning cheer squad with a dirty little secret: Their routines are stolen from East Compton High’s Clover squad led by Isis (Gabrielle Union). Both teams pull out all the stops to win at nationals. Akeelah and the Bee — Elevenyear-old Akeelah (Keke Palmer) from South LA takes a shot at the national spelling title in this uplifting drama with moving performances from Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett. To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar — Two New York drag queens -- Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) -- take their co-won title on a cross country road trip to LA, to face the fierce competition at Drag Queen Nationals, bringing along Miss Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Alberto Leguizamo), a newbie with a ton of passion. Rocket Science — Hal Hefner (Reece Thompson) is a 15-yearold with a speaking problem: He stutters, so it’s only natural that pert and competitive debater Ginny (Anna Kendrick) seeks him out as a debate partner. Only problem? Hal has a soul-crushing infatuation for Ginny, and Ginny has some questionable motives.

Bingo Winning Besties This month, due to Bingo hall closures in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, we’re sharing a “Best of the Bingo Sisters.” Enjoy and have a safe and happy Valentine’s Day. Jan is one of my all-time favorite Bingo buddies. She is quite unlike me in many ways but is fun and funny and we have a wonderful time when we can get a day off together. On one of those days, we started off for a late breakfast before the early Bingo at the Boys and Girls Club. Jan had a special twinkle in her eye and carried a box into the restaurant with her. It was a blustery day with unexpected rain showers and sharp wind gusts, so we had to clutch our coats as we hurried into the mall. When we had completed our meal and were just finishing

FEBRUARY 2021 our coffee, Jan produced the box she had carried in. “I know you miss Kate, so I thought I would do something she might have done,” said Jan, her eyes dancing. She then opened the box to show a little heart-shaped cake, which we shared. “What a neat thing for you to do,” I said. “And you are right, it is just the sort of thing Kate might do.” It set the tone for the rest of the day and we were in high good humor when we arrived at Bingo, where one of the workers was putting bright red cupids on the walls and getting ready for Valentine’s Day. This year the theme was not “lovers” but rather “best friends appreciated,” which I thought a lovely idea. The first big payout allowed the winner to choose a stuffed animal gift for your best friend. I won and split the big money but was allowed an animal. I chose a dragon and gave it to Jan who said she was delighted with both my win and the dragon. “Are you sure you don’t want to mail this to Kate?” asked Jan. “No, she doesn’t like stuffed animals and besides her living situation is pretty cramped. You keep it. She would like you to have it.” We moved on to Chevron, Kite, Five-Around-the-Corner and the Small Picture Frame which Jan won, delighting us both. “You two are entirely too lucky,” said a gruff voice from the next table. “It is my turn.” “You know it doesn’t work that
way,” I said. “Your day will come.” “I will share it with you,” said Jan, revealing more generosity than I thought she possessed. “Here,” she proffered him $50, which he refused in an embarrassed manner. I turned back to Jan, “I am sorry it wasn’t a big payout,” I said, “but $150 isn’t bad.” “Sure beats a whack on the head with a guitar,” said Jan. “That’s a new expression to me,” I said enjoying her lively conversation. “My kids say that all the time,” she said. “They picked it up from ‘blunt instrument’ that used to be on all the crime shows. They thought it sounded cool.” “It is cool,” I said delightedly. “I’ve got to use it in my column.”

I hope you all are well. And, if you are wondering about the headline for this month’s column, let me explain. Certainly, Bingo, as we know it today, was developed here in the United States. We all know that a toy manufacturer named Edwin Lowe took a game he saw at a travelling carnival, during a trip to the South, and formalized the rules, printed the cards and called it BINGO. But, in many parts of the world, when people think of Bingo, they think of the U.K. Here is the reason: During the Second World War the Red Cross and other groups used Bingo as a morale-boosting idea. It was cheap and easy to print cards on regular paper and simply pass them out with some pencils. GIs could sit on a Jeep and play the game with the help of a caller and some helpers. The memory of the game loomed large in the minds of Brits when the country started putting itself back together in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s. Old buildings were quickly converted into Bingo halls. Even former movie theaters became Bingo palaces. It was at that time that the government in London began to nationally regulate the game. Unlike in the U.S., where we have
state and local restrictions; the game in the U.K. got a “national” image for that reason. Thus, when Bingo started spreading to other parts of Europe, as countries rebuilt, it gained a rather “British” image, even though WE had it first. Today, the game we love the best is played in all corners of the world…though, in some, it has changed slightly. It is popular in Italy. This is ironic, since it was an Italian carnival game that made its way to the U.S. that inspired today’s Bingo. By the way, the original game was called Gioco del Lotto and was developed in the 1500s. There are reports that, even WITHOUT Edwin Lowe, Germany had also discovered the Italian carnival game as early as the 1880s and had imported it and modified it. Germans called the game, “der Lottospiel.” Which, means simply, the lottery. And, instead of yelling “bingo” when the card was covered, they yelled, “Volltreffer!” That translates, loosely, as BULLSEYE! By the way, when the nation of Romania began to dig itself out from under the rule of a cruel dictator, people needed fun. Just as the GIs had discovered in World War Two, Bingo was cheap to play and the cards could be duplicated. Romania remains one of Bingo’s hotspots globally to this day. Hi Guy, When I’m at Bingo and sitting for a long period of time, I like to take my shoes off. For some reason if I leave my shoes on too long my feet and ankles swell and my shoes get tight. It makes it hard to walk afterwards. If I take my shoes off, I don’t have this problem. The problem I do have is that a number of the “ladies” at Bingo have noticed me taking off my shoes and are having a fit about it. One woman has actually walked up to me and said: “That’s

He may be able to solve the issue for you. That said, I’m sure there are many people who think taking off your shoes in public is crass. I can remember going to a comedy show in a large theater and a man two seats away from me took off his shoes and sat through the entire performance in bare feet! I have to admit, I was pretty shocked. If the comedian had seen it, I’m sure he would have done a good ten minutes on this guy and his bare feet. At this stage I’m guessing that these women are making Bingo kind of a drag for you. So, let me suggest a compromise. Why not bring a pair of loose, comfortable slippers to Bingo and slip those on during the games? Your feet won’t bother you, but will still be covered, which should satisfy the ladies. They’ll have no choice but to leave you alone and start picking on some other unsuspecting guy. —Guy

Guide to casino comps What is a Comp? Comp is an abbreviation for complimentary. Comps are the free goods and services provided by the casino to reward players for their play. Comps can range on the low-end from free drinks to free valet parking, all the way up to free room, food, beverage and transportation. What are the requirements to get a comp? The only requirement is that you gamble. Most casinos require that you bet at a certain level and play for a specific period of time in order to qualify for a comp. The more you bet and the longer you play the higher the level of comp you can expect. Aren’t comps just for high rollers? That’s one of the misconceptions about comps. You don’t need to be a high roller to get a comp. Yes, we all know the stories about high rollers that get shuttled to and from Las Vegas on a private jet, picked up in a chauffeured stretch limo, given a luxury suite twice the size of your home, and dine in ultraswank gourmet restaurants “on the house.” But casinos also offer valuable comps to low rollers that include free meals, free or discounted rooms, and free show tickets. Why do casinos give comps? Casinos need steady customers and they know there is a lot of competition for players. Therefore, they offer comps to loyal players as a reward for their business. Comps also

FEBRUARY 2021 have a way of making players rationalize their losses, so they return again to the same property. Comps also stimulate players into betting at higher levels and longer because most players mistakenly believe that when they get a comp that they are getting something for nothing. Do I have to lose to get a comp? This is another misconception. Comps are not based on how much you lose (or win) but on the total amount of money you’ve wagered (known as the amount of “action” you give the casino). All the casinos want is a shot at your money at their tables and machines. How do I get comps if I play machines? You need to sign up for a player’s card and keep it inserted into the machine’s card reader while you play. The casino’s computer will keep track of how much money you play through the machine. Always make sure your card is registering properly so you get credit for your play. Also check when you sign up if you are entitled to any freebies just for joining (casinos often have promotions to entice players to sign up). How long do I have to play a slot to get a comp? Casinos used to be secretive about how they rewarded comps. But nowadays the majority of casinos have brochures that tell their players how many dollars they must play to earn a point and how many points are required to get a specific comp. Nowadays, you can also find this information on most casino websites (you can also sign up for a player’s card and keep track of your points on some casino websites). How do I get comps playing table games? You must ask to be “rated” when you play in the pits in order to be eligible for a comp. Getting rated means the pit boss or floor supervisor will keep track of the hours you play and your average bet size. In some casinos you can use your player’s card to get rated while others issue a different rating card for table players. If unsure just inquire at the player’s club

When you sit down to play just slide the card to the dealer with your buy-in and the dealer will hand it to the floor supervisor, who will begin the rating process (in some casinos the dealer has a device on the table that they use to swipe your card to initiate the rating process). If I’m a table player, how much do I need to bet and for how long to get a comp? Each casino has a different policy when it comes to giving comps for table players. Some casinos that cater to high end players require a minimum of $25 bets to even be considered for comps while other casinos will gladly rate nickel players. My advice is to first call the casino’s marketing department and speak to a casino host about table game playing requirements for rating and comps. This way you’ll know the casino’s requirements and there won’t be any surprises. Are there any downsides to comps? Most players are envious of other players who get “comped.” These players play right into the casino’s hands because by betting more and longer than they intended in the pursuit of a comp, most players will end up losing more than the comp was worth. Never play longer or bet more for the sake of a comp. Just learn how to use the system to get your fair share of comps for your normal play.

Spunky Old Broads When I get old, I won’t be sitting around knitting. I’m going to keep clicking my Life Alert button to see how many firefighters show up. – Anonymous Some of us, myself included, are SOBs—Spunky Old Broads, and it just happens to be that February is Spunky Old Broads month. Dr. Gayle Carson, an author and international speaker came up with this concept to encourage those of us over fifty to stop whining about our age, stop obsessing over past regrets, and to embrace life to its fullest. Dr. King who is over eighty lives what she preaches. My husband is also an SOB. He proudly wears a sweatshirt I bought him which proclaims in large letters SOB…Sweet Old Bob! When we’re out and about, he gets lots of comments and snarky looks and he likes that. Speaking of out and about, as of this writing, Bingo in our area is up and running as it is in Vegas and Laughlin, Nevada. The cash balls aren’t as high as they used to be, but still decent if you’re lucky enough to Bingo on one of them. It’s thrilling to see your number in the monitor and know when it’s called, you’re going to win big. It’s happened to me although not lately. My losing streak continues and includes my daily lottery habit. I like to scratch off a few lottery instants with my morning coffee.
Admittedly, odds of winning anything are low, but my theory is that lucky someone’s do win the big bucks. Hope springs eternal and I continue to think that eventually I will be a lucky someone. My brother jokingly calls me Queen of the Big Losers, but I prefer to think I’m a Winner in Waiting. Combine 12 oz. white chocolate chips, 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1 lb. white chocolate almond bark (or 8 two oz. cubes), and 2 lbs. lightly salted peanuts in a crockpot set on low. Stir after 30 minutes. After another 30 minutes scoop clumps of the peanut mixture onto wax paper and allow to cool. You can refrigerate or freeze, but room temperature is best for eating them. Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes
Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted. Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms
that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing. Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received. Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize. Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month's contest. Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing. By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize. The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check. Please, don't call the Bingo Bugle office to find out who the winner is, we won't tell you. And, if it is you, you will be disqualified.
