By Jeffrey Charboneau As many of you are already aware, the Bingo Bugle elected to cancel this year’s World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise. “Due to the Covid-19 virus and low participation for this year, we regret that the Bingo Bugle will be canceling the cruise in November as we believe it is in everyone’s best interest at this time,” organizers posted on the cruise

Now, as a bonus, organizers are adding the first ever Spring Fling Bingo Cruise—a unique and exciting getaway to tide folks over until the World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise returns this fall. Card Hogs and Bingo Bloopers Dear Aunty Bingo, At a Station Casino Bingo room in Henderson, Nevada, at a 9 a.m. session, people are buying $200 worth of Bingo cards. Of course, they are winning 4 or 5 games. When I asked the gaming Commission how many cards are legal in one machine they refuse to answer. Is this fair to the rest of us? Certain people buy their cards and add to them during first game as a very small crowd is there— many times just twenty people. I prefer you not show my name as I have friends that work there. —JM, Nevada Dear JM, Your letter has me a bit puzzled. According to the information online for the game you mention, they are currently playing only paper packs, however, your letter mentions a “machine.” Is this in reference to games they offer now, or earlier visits? Feel free to drop me a line to let me know. I read through the Bingo regulations for Nevada (also available online) and there does not appear to be a limit on how many packs a player can purchase, though if it’s paper, you will be restricted by how many faces you can actually keep up with and mark correctly, and with electronic machines, the price for all those packs is probably the regulating factor. I know it can be upsetting to watch other people who can afford more cards win, especially with a small crowd. Try to focus on your cards, so you don’t miss a number, and maybe reward yourself with a coffee and pastry afterward if you’ve managed not to scowl at that high roller with all their packs (and remember, they may win, but they spent an awful lot to get that win–that might cheer you a bit as well). —Aunt Bingo Dear Readers: With the pandemic still in swing at press time, not as many folks are out playing Bingo and running into the types of situations they need
Dear Aunt Bingo, I wanted to share with you some funny Bingo bloopers I’ve overheard at Bingo halls I go to: 1. A Bingo caller became very embarrassed when she accidentally said the following: “We have a Bingo in Section three, please hold your balls…I mean your CARDS!” 2. A different caller one time said the following: “We are looking for a block of 9 anywhere on your card. You may use the free space.” After someone pointed out to her that you HAVE to use your free space in order to get a block of 9, she laughed about her mistake. 3. The game was a diagonal Bingo. The caller pulled 10 Bs, 8 Is, and 12 Os prior to pulling the first G number. The 31st number was G-57, and there were 96 Bingos. Upon seeing how many Bingos there were, the caller tried to make things easier for the floor workers by announcing: “If you DON’T have a Bingo, please raise your hand.” 4. One Bingo player was trying to describe the Reverse Blackout game to a new player. The number on the monitor was I-18, and I overheard this exchange: “Now, you will want to daub out both I-18 and its reverse number O-81.” The new player was quite confused and actually tried to locate O-81 before realizing that there are only 75 numbers in Bingo and O-81 doesn’t exist. —Jim Metzger, Portland, Oregon Dear Jim, You have some pretty funny stuff here! After reading your letter I began thinking that there have been many situations at Bingo that gave me a chuckle—like the woman who played an entire evening of Bingo with a sock stuck to the back of her sweatshirt—that I wish I’d written down and have long since forgotten. Now you have given me an idea. Many years ago, I carried a journal everywhere I went in which I jotted down ideas and observations throughout the day. I think I will start doing that again with my trips to Bingo by carrying a small notepad in my Bingo bag in which I’ll jot down interesting things when they occur. In the meantime, I encourage readers to send in their own funny and interesting observations from Bingo just as Jim did. Coffee Shop Vets Are One Man Short I didn’t know if they’d be there, what with the weather snapping cold like it has, but there they were, the elderly veteran crew, arrayed in a wide half circle on the sidewalk outside the coffee shop. Or at least most of them were. I did a head count after I placed my coffee order at the pickup window. One appeared to be missing, and it seemed that I’d arrived in the middle of a conversation. “They kept him overnight, worried about his chest. Coughing, but no fever.” “Can’t be the virus if there’s no fever.” “It could be the virus with no symptoms whatsoever.” The retired sergeant, in charge of physical spacing, tapped his 6-foot measuring stick on the pavement. “You need to keep up.” They batted it back and forth, taking bets about which of

There are those who would argue that today’s world is going to heck in a handbasket. I’ve always found it interesting when people complain about the breakdown of our world as we know it — I attempt to imagine their criteria for this dystopian future. Does it involve a computer takeover? Genetic tinkering? Just all-out trash human behavior? Here are several iconic dystopian fantasies to choose from, and a few lesserknown morsels of impending doom. May the odds be ever in your favor. The Matrix — Keanu Reeves stars as Neo, a hacker who is liberated from a simulated reality by the elusive Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and learns the secret and terrible truth that the world is not what it seems. Dystopian cause: computers. Death Race 2000 — For camp, I prefer Roger Corman’s 1975 version with Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine as some of the competitors in a transcontinental race where points are clocked both by speed and the number and type of pedestrian kills. Dystopian cause: totalitarianism.

He listened and hung up, sliding the phone back in his fatigue jacket pocket. “It’s not the virus,” he said. “Common cold. But the grandkid tested positive, so now the whole house is in lockdown. Our good buddy has to go elsewhere.” “Bet he’s not happy about that.” “His other daughter is coming from upstate. Plans to take him with her tomorrow.” “He’ll be even less happy about that. Poor guy. He’s a news junkie. She lives in a cabin on a lake, no cable. Just basic channels.” By the time I finished my coffee, hovering at the edge of the group, the general consensus was that their pal, to be trapped for a few weeks in a lakeside cabin in the woods with no cable television, was actually the lucky one. As long as he remembered his fishing pole. Divergent — A worldwide war wipes out humanity, except in Chicago, where the remaining residents separate themselves into factions — the smart, the honest, the kind, the generous and the daring. Things get dicey when Tris (Shailene Woodley) tries to be more than one thing. Dystopian cause: war. The Hunger Games — The winner of a 13-district war subjugates the rest of the districts by culling two young people from each yearly to fight to the death in a reality show that is too real. They get more than they bargained for when Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take the place of her little sister. Dystopian cause: political machinations of terrible people. The Running Man — In the not too distant future, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a contestant in America’s most popular game show, where convicted criminals enter a gladiator-style arena to battle against mercenaries and other bloodthirsty killers to attempt to win their freedom. This film, made in 1987, takes place in 2019. Dystopian cause: economic collapse. Idiocracy — In this cult classic Mike Judge comedy, the military places an “Average Joe” and a duped prostitute in suspended animation, and they are accidentally abandoned until they wake up 500 years later in a seriously dumbed down future where they appear to be the smartest people on the planet. Dystopian cause: antiintellectualism run amok. Never Let Me Go — A romantic tragedy based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 novel, three friends from boarding school navigate love and the future knowing that they are clones, alive only to be harvested for their organs. Dystopian cause: medical tinkering.

Bossed at Bingo I think I am known for being an affable person of easy-going disposition, so it was with a real shock when I totally lost my temper at a Bingo game of all places. We had come in, sat down at a table and I was arranging my bits and baubles when Margaret plunked herself down across the table from me. I do not like Margaret. She is bossy, opinionated and thinks much too highly of herself, but I put up with her and try to stay out of her orbit as much as possible. It seems I could not avoid her today. I was arranging my Bonanza cards. “Oh, don’t do it that way,” said Margaret. I looked up at her dumbly. “It is so much better to put them together like this.” With that, she took my cards and put them together vertically. “This way you can do a whole row without moving your eyes. It is much faster, and you won’t make mistakes. You do tend to

DECEMBER 2020 make mistakes, you know.” She smiled slyly and added a small bit of sticky tape to keep them all together. I found myself getting angry, especially since what she said made sense. I had never thought of it before. However, the crack about making mistakes was unnecessary. I retreated into play and before long was “on.” I took special notice of that card and pulled it closer to me to be more watchful. I began to chant “B-52” quietly under my breath. “Oh, don’t do that,” said Margaret. “You will bring about bad luck. Just keep the number you want in your head.” She flustered me. I admit it. I was absolutely unable to hear the caller until he went on to the next number. “Wasn’t that the one you were waiting for?” asked Margaret with a sly and triumphant grin and I realized I had missed the Bingo I had been anticipating. I sat ready to explode when the next game started and Margaret reached over to point to a number I had missed. “Stop that!” I cried out. “Just mind your own business and let me play my cards. Let me make my own mistakes!” The floor worker came to our table. “What’s the problem?” he asked. “No problem,” said Margaret airily. She pointed at me. “She missed a number and I pointed it out.” The floor worker moved away, and I mumbled, “Just mind your own beeswax,” recollecting
a phrase from my childhood. I actually felt like I was five years old and being attacked by the class bully. The rest of the day was uneventful. Neither Margaret nor I won and as we were packing up to go, she said, “I will let you know next time I am coming to Bingo. I do so enjoy sitting across from you. Give me your phone number.” I couldn’t decide whether to give her the number of the local IRS agency hoping they might haul her away or my own number so that I could avoid any game to which she might be coming. Then I decided it would be easier just to give her my phone number which I did, “making a mistake” by reversing the last two digits.

In a column or two ago I mentioned that I would be moving back to “my roots,” going back to the small town in Southern Indiana where I grew up and where I first played Bingo in my childhood. During the past few weeks I have gotten really mistyeyed about the move home. I have begun to realize that I am turning another page in life. Although I technically retired from my job as a network radio newscaster a decade ago, moving back home is making me realize that I need to start behaving like an older retired person. I need to realize that I DID have a heart valve replacement in the past two years…that I DID lose my longtime roommate several months ago…that time marches on. I am a lot slower and tottering than I was when I wrote my first BOB ON BINGO column twenty years ago. And, I am CERTAINLY a very different guy than I was when I first played Bingo in my old grade school cafeteria back in 1956. But, through all of that, there has been one constant—BINGO. It’s the same game now as it was back then, except the equipment has become more sophisticated and many of the facilities brighter
and more high-tech. However, as we end this year, gather with friends and exchange gifts, and plan for next year, allow me to close my eyes for a second and picture that old cafeteria in the basement of the brand new St. Simon’s Grade School. My great-uncle Joe Dant is there, calling the games. I am sitting behind my grandmother (Joe’s sister) and my mom. The building is fresh and new and it’s the first time I ever played Bingo. We use stiff cardboard playing cards and cover the squares with little colored, round chips. The pastor of our church, Fr. Lautner, had decided that having Bingo each week in the brandnew building would not only bring people together from all across the community, it would show off the new facility. I can still smell the floor wax and the cafeteria smells. The only aspect missing during those sessions was our teachers—you see, nuns (back then) weren’t allowed to be seen playing Bingo. How many years ago was that…63 years? How can memories stay that fresh over all those years? Well, Bingo can create some strong memories. Holiday Reflections Christmas Memory by Judy Podlesney As a child, Christmas was a magical time. There was an air of anticipation over and above Christmas lights, Santa, and the holiday bustle. I was told Christmas is the season when angels are closest to the Earth. At age ten I attended my first mid-night mass at Our Lady of Victory church. My mother thought I was now old enough to stay awake and not fidget. Mother, grandmother and I walked the three blocks to church, while my father (a Baptist) stayed home with my younger brother. We arrived half an hour early, as the church was standing room only on Christmas eve. It was a relief to enter the warm church after the cold walk where Long Island chill stung my bare legs and reached under my coat. I sat between my mother and grandmother. I counted the rows from the altar to our pew, so I wouldn’t get lost going back to my seat after receiving communion. I breathed the mingled aroma of candle wax, furniture polish, heady remains of incense and wool coats of parishioners. The church was silent except for echoing creaks of wood as people knelt to pray. I had my children’s missal, so I could follow the order of the mass. The rhythm of Latin words held an air of mystery. Red poinsettias decorated the church. The wooden pews were polished to a shine. Finally, mass began. The priest entered in white vestments followed by two altar boys in long dresses, their sneakers peeking out when they knelt to ring the bells at communion. An usher directed us to the altar row by row to receive communion. Only the wafer was offered. I was conscious of letting it melt on my tongue; one does not chew the body of Christ. The choir sang carols accompanied by a large pipe organ. With the celebration of the mass and the singing of Joy to the World, Adeste Fidelis and Silent Night, I felt the peace and joy of the season. Following mass, my mother, grandmother and I went to a side altar where the nativity scene was on display. There we witnessed a tableau of shepherds, wise men, sheep, cows and, in the center, the holy family with the baby Jesus lying in a manger. It was then I made the connection that the Christ child was the first Christmas gift to the world.

Tales of Bingo Hi Guy, File this one under: You never know what you’re going to see when you go out for an afternoon of Bingo. My girlfriend, Tina, and I play Bingo several times a week and we enjoy traveling to different halls at home and in other towns just for the variety. By variety I mean different atmospheres, different food, and most importantly, different people. Some games we go to are slow, others so quick we can barely keep up. Some are very quiet; others are so noisy we can’t believe the players don’t mind. At one of these noisier Bingos we ended up sitting one table away from a young couple who clearly were unhappy with each other. Between calls they would criticize each other about everything you could imagine—clothing, friends, manners…it just went on and on. Finally, the argument got so
heated that the young man stood up, banged his hand on the table and said: “I’m sick of this (bleep)! And I’m sick of you! We’re done!” The whole section gasped at the realization that we had just witnessed the end of a relationship. It was shocking. But what was even more surprising was what the man did after this. I assumed he would storm out of the Bingo hall. But instead, he scooped up his Bingo paper, stomped across the room to another table and sat down—to finish the rest of the Bingo session! Tina and I turned and just stared at each other in amazement. Sure enough, for the next 45 minutes the ex-couple played Bingo right along with the rest of us, then left separately when the games were over. Even though the hall was quite a distance from home, we went back the next week at the same time to see if the couple showed up. The woman was there—alone. And believe me, plenty of eyes were on her all afternoon, but I don’t think anyone had the guts to ask her where the guy was. —GL, via email Hi GL, That’s a heck of a story. I’ve seen a few arguments at Bingo but can’t say that in all my years of play I’ve ever witnessed a relationship actually come to an end in the middle of a session. Then again, I also can’t remember the last time I was in a Bingo hall that was noisy enough that a couple could have a fight during the games and not get in trouble for it. Fried Carp for Christmas Ugly Christmas sweaters have made a comeback these last few years. Everyone should wear one to Bingo, then, whoever yells Bingo gets an extra ten bucks if they parade around the hall with a toilet plunger on their head and sing Jingle Bells. I would totally do that. —Yours Truly December is the most wonderful month of the year and not just because it’s my birthday month. I love mistletoe kisses, ugly Christmas sweaters, and holiday decorations reminding us to shop early. The holiday tunes playing in the stores reinforce my Christmas spirit and put me in the mood for hot buttered rum or eggnog by our Christmas tree. This year we will be having our family Christmas for the first time at our granddaughter’s home. There’s nothing better than family time, potluck food, and love generously shared among the generations who are present for the festivities. We will all wear brightly colored pajamas and I’ll take tons of photos, one of which will end up on next year’s Christmas cards. As we look back this holiday season, we are reminded it’s been a difficult year for most of us. The holidays won’t be the same with some family members missing; others never to be present again. We should mourn their absence while remembering the good times of years past. This year our family will be playing Christmas Bingo. I
bought a game set which features Christmas pictures so all ages can play. I wrap little gifts for prizes so winners can enjoy unwrapping the unexpected. If only adults are present, this can lead to some hilarious reveals e.g. once a prize was a fart cushion. Not for everyone, but our little group had tons of fun with it the rest of the night. Other suggestions are lottery tickets and tiny bottles of booze. If children are present, best stick to candy bars and everyone’s favorite, cash. Two-dollar bills, legal currency, are available from our banks and they make unique prizes. Besides those suggestions, homemade baked goodies are always appreciated and who doesn’t love to eat while playing Bingo. And speaking of food, if you live in the Czech Republic, the traditional Christmas Eve feast is fried carp. Glad I don’t live there as I do not love fish except in aquariums where I can enjoy their serene beauty. Another Czech tradition involves young women who are looking for romance. Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes
Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted. Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms
that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing. Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received. Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize. Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month's contest. Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing. By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize. The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.
