The “Energizer Bunny” Turns 91 Years Young

We met Alice Berezinski at the Grobschmidt Senior Citizen Center in South Milwaukee. She didn’t have time to talk right away because she had kitchen duties waiting for her. Instead of just enjoying the food, people and facilities at the Center, she spends her time serving her fellow senior citizens.

Serving others is nothing new for Alice, she’s done it her whole life. When I asked her if I could interview her for this Bingo Bugle article she told me she had to start writing down all of her volunteer activities or she might forget some. I thought that it can’t be that hard to remember until she gave me her list. It was two pages, single spaced, chock full of activities that would put a much younger per son to shame. Her ambition and enthusiasm are contageous. Before lunch at the Senior Center the Food Service Supervisor announced Alice’s upcoming birthday and the room erupted in song, “Happy Birthday dear Alice”. The supervisor commented, “I wish I had 10 more volunteers like Alice”.

After serving lunch the volunteers sat down to eat at their table. Alice was joined by Bonnie, Sandy, Harold and Audry. They referred to her as an “EnergizerBunny”, and said,

Lodged Balls and Blower Bugs

Aunt Bingo: There have been a few frustrating situations at Bingo recently that I tried to ignore at first but now think need to be addressed.

There seems to be a carelessness in how some Bingo halls are operating these days and I feel that it is spoiling what is otherwise an enjoyable game.

What triggered me to write to you about it was an experience I, and a large number of others, had when toward the end of the second Bingo session of the night it was discovered that there were duplicate balls in the blower. That meant that anyone playing who had the duplicate numbers had unfair/increased odds of winning over players who did not have those numbers. Plus, how in the world did the extra balls get in there? And had they been there for weeks? Months? Longer?

Another time, at a different hall, operators had to be told several times that balls were getting lodged and not falling into the mixing area. (It seemed to be some kind of blower malfunction where the air was pinning some of the Bingo balls and not letting them tumble with the rest.) I began to wonder: Has this been going on for a while but only now has someone noticed and spoken up?

They “solved” the problem by turning the blower off and on, but the problem kept repeating. Needless to say, the audience was not happy with this nonsense.

I also should bring up the oldest complaint of all—the fact that at many games, certain numbers come out of the chute early and regularly and get called all the time, while others seem to be rare as hen’s teeth. I am guessing that the balls need to be cleaned and aren’t, or they are just old/damaged which is causing them to not behave in a uniform way. Whatever the reason, I have watched people in line trying to “select” their Bingo paper and increase their odds by doing a quick scan of the numbers on the sheets, especially if they see that the seller is a friend or someone new.

Obviously, this is not something that Bingo regulations can control; it is up to the Bingo operators to pay attention to such issues and fix problems when they occur.

Dear Critical: You certainly have been having a rough time at Bingo lately!

The duplicate balls is a stunner: I can only imagine that the extra ones got in there while the Bingo hall was trying to do a GOOD thing—replace an old set of balls with a new one.

Regardless of how it happened, try and keep in mind that the error was not intentional, it was discovered and corrected, and likely had no significant impact on the games that night. (Although I’m sure if I’d been one of the players in the room that night, I’d have been as steamed as everyone else.)

Multiple balls getting hung up in the blower due to some kind of malfunction is more serious. Now you have numbers that are basically being taken out of play and not permitted to mix with the other balls or drawn up the chute for the caller to retrieve. On the plus side, switching the blower on and off to keep all the balls moving was a smart temporary fix.

But I hope the console was taken to the shop for corrective action ASAP. Had an individual ball been hung up or gone missing, now that’s whole other story.

I remember a game I attended years ago where it was discovered that a ball had somehow gotten wedged into the corner of the mixer and no one was sure how long it had been stuck there.

When it was revealed what the number was, there was an uproar from every player in the room who had that number on their Bingo paper.

It was a real mess. The manager ended up refunding the money to everyone who had the number— which was just about everybody.

Decision-Ready Claims Eligibility Expanded The Department of Veterans Affairs is expanding its list of categories eligible for submission under Decision Ready Claims. The new group will include surviving spouses, certain veterans and some service members.

Presumptive service connections, direct service connections and secondary service connections will be eligible in many cases, as well as surviving spouses and families. Service members who are transitioning out of the service will be able to file pre-discharge claims less than 90 days from separation. They’ll hear back within 30 days.

Step one for veterans is to work with a rep from a Veteran Service Organization. Your VSO rep will know how to assemble all your supporting documents and make sure they’re included in your

claim. If you’re scheduled for a medical exam for your claim, go.

It’s part of the evidence. Having all your information (including service records, exams and other items) is the whole point of a DRC: Once everything is packaged together, there’s no reason for the VA to stall, drag its feet or otherwise delay your claim.

This true-life World War II tale is told from the perspective of air, land and sea by an ensemble cast including Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy. It’s moving and inspirational, and it’s no wonder that it’s garnering such awards attention.

THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE (PG) — The island city of Ninjago is under constant attack from the evil and nefarious Garmadon (an incendiary performance by Justin Theroux). Luckily, a group of high schoolers also are undercover ninjas to, you know, sort this out.

One of them — unfortunately, or perhaps predictably — is Lloyd (Dave Franco), the son of said villain. The kids must combine forces with the guidance of Master Wu (Jackie Chan), a wise and wise-cracking mentor. The franchise is a little worn, not as bright and shiny at the original Lego Movie or even the Batman offshoot, but still quite serviceable.

STRONGER (R) — Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Jeff Baumann, who lost both legs in the Boston Marathon bombing.

This is based on the survivor’s memoirs, which was a New York Times bestselling book coauthored with Bret Witter.

Gyllenhaal gives a moving and memorable performance as a man who struggles both physically and emotionally. The story chronicles Jake’s presence and injury at the bombing site, his double amputation, the subsequent fame and the PTSD he faces, as well as his physical recovery and perseverance. Well worth watching.

Nobody seems to be quite clear about how St. Valentine’s Day first came to be celebrated, but it is now celebrated in many countries in the world. It has become a lover’s holiday with hearts and candy and flowers. It is also one of the biggest restaurant happenings of the year. This year Kate and I decided to buy a “Sweetheart’s Retreat� for Cliff and Rodney at a mountain villa not too far away.

This package included two lovely rooms, dinner for four, and a casino where we could play Bingo.

The manager was a charming Dutchman named Raleigh—short, rotund and cheerful. He commented on the fact of the “ladies paying� and said he would be kind to us and not expect tips. We laughed and continued tipping.

Then we asked about his English name and he said his mother was a big fan of the English and Sir Walter Raleigh in particular, hence his name.

Our windows had a spectacular view of the snow-covered mountains where hardier folk were skiing. We, however, were content to stay indoors and watch.

We had a marvelous dinner of steak and lobster and then went to the casino to play Bingo. We had just got settled when our manager, Raleigh, showed up with his dauber, ready to play. He had a huge smile and settled at our table. “I love Bingo,� he said, “and they let me play as much as I want.�

We played the first game rather quietly which was four corners plus a diagonal and none of our group was lucky. “I’m buying an extra Bonanza for every game I don’t win,� declared Rod. Raleigh was on for the next game and had a fit of the giggles. “I just love this game,� he declared. Then I noticed his number in the screen, but Raleigh said nothing. “You are winning,� I said loudly enough for the whole room to hear. Again Raleigh said nothing. “Bingo!� I shouted for him while he made shushing motions with his hands. “I don’t understand,� I said. “It’s this way,� he said. “They let me play as much as I want but they don’t let me win. It would be against the rules of the casino. I

just get to have the fun of playing, and I win surprisingly often.�

Rod won Bonanza, which made us all very happy and we went to the bar for a nightcap before calling it a day well done. Cliff settled into his chair and said, “This is the nicest Valentine’s Day I can remember.� Then he dug in his inner pocket and produced a small jeweler’s box that he handed to Kate. “This is for you. Just a little something to help you remember today.�

Kate opened it happily and it turned out to be an “I love you� pendant with diamonds around the outer curve. It was lovely and Kate was delighted.

Just as I was beginning to feel a bit left out, Rod leaned toward me and whispered, “You will get your present upstairs.�

I could hardly wait to go upstairs to see what my gift was, but once in the room, he took me in his arms and said, “I am giving you something very special tonight.�

It’s A Wonder ful (Real) Life

It came to light the other night at Bingo, when the conversation in our little clique was about the state of education. Teachers having to buy their own tools, over loaded classrooms, poor salary, those are problems I never had to deal with.

“I enjoyed my fifteen years in the classroom,” I said proudly.

“You’re saying you were a school teacher? I thought you said you were a ballet teacher.”

“I was,” I replied, “For almost twenty years. There’s nothing more exciting than waiting for the curtain to open for the annual recital and beautiful little girls in their tutus, dreaming of being a star.”

“That’s strange. You told me you were a nun once.”

“Oh I didn’t stay long in the

They don’t play Bingo and they wouldn’t let me be mother superior.”

I began to feel uncomfortable when I noticed some of the girls were whispering to each other with their hands over their mouths.

“What ya whispering bout?” I asked innocently.

“Oh nothing. I’ll tell you about it later,” said Ethel.

“I remember one time, when I worked at a Homeless Shelter, two guys were whispering like that.

They were planning to steal some cigarettes.”

“Oh sure. You worked at a homeless Shelter,” said one.

“Actually, my husband and I were co-founders of this one.”

I am not too bright I guess. It took me a while to figure out that my friends didn’t exactly believe I have had such an interesting and eclectic life. I felt better when I saw them talking with my mother and sisters during the break. Good old Mom. I knew she would set them straight.

When play resumed, Marge smiled sweetly and said, “My, you certainly have had an interesting life.”

“Yup,” I replied. “I’m only going through life once and I want to do it all.

“And by the way, that column in the Bingo Bugle that you were laughing about a few minutes ago…”

“Yeah, what about it?”

“I wrote it.”

A Nation of Real Bingo Players

Today, here in 2018, Bingo is still alive and thriving. And some of the game’s most rabid fans are in the United Kingdom. As a matter of fact, there is a small hotel chain based in this country that has Bingo on Monday nights at only two of its hotels—one in Palm Springs, CA, and the other in London.

I recently saw a marvelous television documentary about the British people’s fascination with the game we love so much. I thought I’d share some of it with you.

First, it seems that Bingo became a major source of enter tainment for British fighting men and women during the Second World War. It was easy to print sets of Bingo cards and make sets of numbers for the “caller.”

And, since the military personnel marked the cards with a pencil, pen or crayon, the game could be played just about everywhere, even on long trips on troop trains.

After the war, Bingo suddenly emerged as an inexpensive form of entertainment. England had rationing of many foods and items way into the 50s. Bingo, played in pubs and clubs and private halls, became a bright spot for many war-weary Brits.

As the 1960s approached, there began to be a lot of empty real estate in the downtown sections of British cities that had escaped the aerial bombing. Movie theaters were closing by the hundreds as the new medium of television became the latest entertainment draw. Entrepreneurs soon found that abandoned theaters were ideal “halls” for the emergence of “commercial” Bingo in England.

These halls attracted mostly British women who found they were great places to meet friends, bet a little money and possibly win a little money, while their hubbies were off at work. About this same time it became fashionable in the halls for the callers to give each number a poetic nickname: 39, Rise and Shine. 27, Next door to Heaven, and so on.

But that all changed quickly when the British government began to strictly regulate Bingo, beginning in the 1970s. Stricter rules translated to “no clowning around.” Read the number clearly and concisely.

By the way, if you ever go to the UK, be prepared for a differ ent kind of Bingo experience. In many of the halls up to 90 different numbers are used; the cards are often strips and not the traditional 5x5 grid that is so familiar here. But, the object is the same: Have the right numbers in the right places.

Next time, we’ll go out on a search for aliens and play Bingo at the same time.

In the wind across the mountain comes, “Whatever.”

It’s Friday night and we’ve fled the city.

Beside me is the weekend cat Come down from the barn.

Over and over she jumps across The mountain and races through the valley.

She throws herself against my outstretched Hand, and gnaws my thumb. She’s not a gentle Cat, her purr a manic squeal.

In the wind across the mountain comes, “She’ll settle down if you stop playing with her.”

And I wonder if he’s talking to me or to the cat.

Hey Big Spender

Hi Guy, There are a number of “big spender” Bingo players in my area who visit different Bingo halls and are famous for dropping $50, $75, $100 or more practically every time they play. They are not all friends and do not all play together, but everyone knows who they are because of their behavior and attitude and how they think they “run the show” because they spend so much on Bingo.

I have stood in line and watched as these high-spender people are permitted to flip through the packs and choose whichever ones they want. (Would love to know what they see in some packs and don’t see in others!) I’ve also sat by and watched them treat the workers like servants and have them run and get them new daubers or snacks from the kitchen.

They also have their special seating areas where they spread out their belongings and Bingo paper and make it look like others are sitting there so that they can hog an entire table. And they are unfriendly and antisocial like you wouldn’t believe—like this is their professional job and they cannot be disturbed.

It is perplexing. Where is the joy in this? OK, good for them, they spend 3-4 times as much money on Bingo as the rest of us. Must be they can afford it: they show up night after night after night and lay out their cash like everybody else.

(And SO MUCH cash!)

But truthfully, it is not about the money they spend. It is about the rude behavior…like, “We spend more, we’re better than you, and we deserve better service.”

It is kind of surprising that the Bingo staff put up with it. Who wants to volunteer to be some diva’s servant? But the workers and the people in charge don’t do a single thing about the behavior and as a

Hi Fed Up, I have definitely seen these types of players in my rounds at the Bingo halls, and I’m confident there are people reading your letter right now who are nodding their heads in agreement.

Frankly, these types of players don’t phase me much; they aren’t hurting anyone beyond being annoying, and apparently it makes them feel important to be Bingo big shots.

Not long after receiving your letter, I posed the question to a couple of Bingo hall managers. Were they troubled by the behavior of highmaintenance players who spend a lot of money at Bingo and expect special treatment? Almost all them said that as long as these players were not being disruptive, the answer was, no.

As they explained it, first off, there are only a handful of such players. Secondly, the hundreds of dollars they spend means hundreds of dollars more for the charities and activities Bingo helps fund.

(Apparently there is also a friendly rivalry between Bingo halls for players, and if a manager takes issue with a big spender they risk all that money going elsewhere.)

Be aware that not all the Bingo bosses felt this way. Two of the managers I asked said that under no circumstances does any player get better treatment than another—no matter how much money they spend. One of them put it like this: “Why bend over backward for someone spending $100 if it is going to alienate 10 players spending $25?”

Puppy Is No Gift for Baby Boy

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As a special gift, I’d like to get our baby boy a puppy that can grow along with him. Any suggestions? — Ted L., Tennessee DEAR TED: How about a stuffed animal? Seriously, while your son might love the puppy, and you’ll probably get some wonderful, cute pictures with them playing together, once the “new” wears off, that cute puppy may become a rambunctious nuisance.

Think about it: You’ve got your hands full keeping your new baby happy. Bringing a puppy into the house would mean taking care of two babies, both of whom need lots of attention. Just training a puppy can be time-consuming — try doing it with a 1-year-old underfoot!

Wait a few years until your son is old enough to both appreciate and care for a dog. He’ll still have a friend to grow up with, and he’ll learn responsibility. And even then, make sure to ask your son’s opinion first. He may want a fish instead.

Are Video Poker Machines Rigged?

Many players, especially those that play slots, have an uneasy feeling about playing video poker machines. They believe that casinos can somehow rig the cards in a video poker machine to make it harder to get a winning hand. If you believe that casinos can do this, you definitely need to read what I’m about to say about this.

First, let me ask you this question. If we were to play a game of video poker on a kitchen table with a deck of playing cards, how would we do it so that the game is honest? Suppose you make a bet and I take a standard 52-card deck, shuffle them, and then randomly select five cards from the shuffled deck and place them face up on the table. While you are looking at your five-card hand to determine which cards you want to hold, I’ll continue to shuffle the remaining 47 cards. Lets suppose you tell me that you want to hold the first three cards in your hand.

I would remove the two cards in your hand that you want to discard and place them aside, stop shuffling, and give you the top card from the 47-card shuffled deck and place it face up in position four in your hand and the next card would be face up in position five in your hand. The hand is over. If your five-card hand contains a pair of jacks or higher, I’d pay you an amount based upon a pay schedule of winning hands that I would have shown you before we started playing the game.

After I paid you (assuming you had a winning hand), I would collect all the cards, put them in one 52-card stack, and start shuffling them again for the next hand.

I think you would agree that the above procedure results in a fair game because each card in the deck has the same probability of being picked. Furthermore, if you discarded, say, a two of clubs, there is no way for you to get the two of clubs again on the subsequent draw. In other words, I haven’t rigged the game in any way.

The way I dealt the cards above is exactly the way the cards are shuffled and dealt in a video poker machine in a casino. In order to emulate the procedure I used above, video poker machines have a computer chip that is pro-

FEBRUARY 2018 grammed to simulate the process of shuffling a standard deck of 52virtual cards, and then randomly select the cards for each hand so that each card has the same probability of being selected. (For techno geeks reading this, video poker machines have a random number generator program on the computer chip that does all this.)

The computer chips that are in the video poker machines are tested and certified by an independent testing lab to be certain they will do exactly what I described above. Furthermore, state gaming regulations mandate that the programs in video poker machines must operate per the above, and if they don’t, a casino can be fined, or worse, lose their gaming license.

Here’s another fact about video poker machines that is important to understand. The odds of getting any of the winning hands in a video poker game can be calculated with great accuracy since every card must have the same probability of being selected. WORLD POKER AGENDA ANNOUNCED Plans have been finalized for the next World Series of Poker tournament. The tourney, regularly held in Las Vegas, will feature nearly 80 events this time around. According to press announcements, the first competitions will begin on the 19th of May and run through the 17th of July. Tens of thousands of players and fans attend each year’s events. The tourneys are always a shot in the arm for Vegas.

MOVEMENT IN SPORTS BETTING There are three companies that have now joined together to try to end a legal battle over the proposed acquisition of XYN Gaming by Scientific Games. According to published reports, the trio of companies has sent signals that it hopes to be in the wings if-and-when national sports-betting becomes a full-scale reality. The entire future of the enterprise is based on hopes that the U.S. Supreme Court will legalize across-state-lines sports betting.

RENO GAMING FANS MULL OVER REPORT The organization Gaming Research of Las Vegas saw its shares upgraded recently in its Monarch Casino and Resort di-

vision. That group is the parent company of Reno’s Atlantis facility. Because of that, some analysts say that Reno is now officially on the upswing. One expert at Union Gaming told media that the entire Reno area should see better days ahead. On the positive side are said to be an increase in business at convention sites and the possibility of long-term investments.

STATE GAMING BOARD LOSING CHAIRMAN A.G. Burnett, the chairman of Nevada State Gaming Control for the past five years, is leaving to take a private sector job. According to a release, Burnett, who is an attorney, is moving to a law firm in Reno. Burnett told media, in a telephone interview, that he is ready for a new challenge and has been checking out alternatives for some time.

REDO CONTINUES AT LAUGHLIN AQUARIUS After months of anticipation, the switchover is nearly complete for the takeover of the Aquarius Casino Resort in Laughlin by Golden Entertainment. The acquisition was only one-fourth of a multi-pronged strategy by Golden.

When the announcement was made several months ago, Golden also announced plans to buy casinos in Pahrump and in Montana and Maryland. Golden already owned PT’s Pubs in Las Vegas.

Love, Love, Love

Ahh February, the month to celebrate love and there is much to love if you take time to think about it. Sure, there are spouses, romantic partners, family, and friends.

But, we should make sure those people know they are loved every day of the year, not just in February; or Valentine’s Day specifically.

How about things we love that make us, and others, feel good? For example, hot chocolate on a freezing cold day. Or an electric blanket that warms our beds so we don’t have to curl up in misery from cold sheets. Growing up, my upstairs bedroom having no heat was so cold a glass of water would freeze solid on my nightstand. I didn’t worry about it with the solution being to run up the stairs, jump into my bed piled high with blankets and quilts, and shiver until the bed warmed up from my body heat. In case you’re ever on Jeopardy and they ask who invented electric blankets, the answer is Sidney Russell in 1912. The first ones were bulky and went under the mattress. A few years later in 1921 the blankets came into widespread use to keep TB patients warm when they slept outdoors for the health benefits of fresh air.

Let’s see. What else do I love that makes me or others feel good.

Hugs. Hugs are always good unless you’re germaphobic. Christmas, birthdays, and family reunions also make the list.

Margaritas, on any given day at any time, are comfort food. By that I mean potatoes, meatloaf, cornbread, bacon, the list is endless. That’s why I’m as they say a little chunky. I admit I love to eat, so what. Life is short and when you’re my age, even shorter. I say go for it and indulge when you feel like it. My doctors would disagree, but some of them also look like they never skip dessert, so there.

FEBRUARY 2018 That brings me to video poker and bingo. I have played bingo since the early 1970s and video poker since the 1980s. Each has changed in so many ways I can’t begin to list them all. Over the years my addiction to these games has only increased. I love to sit down at a poker machine and lose myself in the computerized cards I’m dealt; the same for bingo, although the atmosphere is a little different in a casino from a bingo hall. Video poker is more or less impersonal, with little or no human interaction—just me and the game on my machine. That is, unless my husband chooses to sit beside me and complain about how he’s not winning on his machine. My solution is to tune Robert out as I did my 5th graders when I was a teacher and they were being annoying. On the other hand, bingo is a social game. Sure, we’re playing to win money and prizes, but interaction with the other players is part of the fun. Whether playing with friends or strangers, conversation is normal and so is complaining about missing a bingo win by one number or congratulating a fellow player for a big win.
