The Bingo Bugle team visited The Danish Brotherhood of Kenosha Lodge #14 Bingo, 2206 63rd St. Kenosha, WI 53143 (262)647-9781. They play Bingo on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. The doors and bar open at 3:30PM, they start selling Bingo Cards at 5:30 PM and the first ball is called at 6:15PM. When we were there, the Progressive Jackpot was approximately $1,345.

We talked to Robert Nelson II who was in charge of managing Bingo that night. He told us all about the Danish Brotherhood of Kenosha, their Bingo and the other activities and events that they do.

The Danish Brotherhood is open to all male members of the community.

In addition to Bingo they have a Monthly Supper Club with a varied menu each time. BBQ Ribs and Prime Rib are two examples of the meals they offer for a reasonable price.

They are preparing for their 125th Anniversary Party scheduled for May 12th. The party is open to the public. You can call (262)657-9781 Mon., Wed., or Fri. from 9AM till Noon for reservations.

It sounds like a good way to learn about the Danish Brotherhood and eat a great meal consisting of Beef and Pork, Fruit and Vegetables, Red Cabbage and Mashed Potatoes.

Player says: OMG Lighten Up! Dear Aunt Bingo: Hello! Hello!! Hello!!!

OMG! Would you please run a note asking the uptight ladies and gentlemen at Bingo (I refer to the players, not the workers… the Bingo workers ROCK!) to lighten up and remember that Bingo is a game and games are supposed to be fun.

When I go to Bingo I’m there to have a good time and hopefully win some money. I’m out with friends who are also fun and like to have fun. To us, fun means that we chat and laugh and share jokes and tell stories.

We are of course serious about our Bingo and watch our cards and want to win. But that doesn’t mean sitting there like statues staring at the cards and the monitor and having a bitch-fit any time someone sniffs or sneezes.

God grief! Life is too short.

The last time me and my girls were at Bingo we were being silly and giggling quietly about something when some “lady” mumbles under her breath “how rude” or “how crude” or some other words along those lines.

I stopped and turned in the direction of whoever said this and asked: “Excuse me?” Silence. Then I said: “Was someone speaking to us?” Again, dead quiet.

Bingo continued and my friends and I continued to play and chat— quietly—but some of the fun had been taken out of our evening because of the comment directed at us. It got worse during the first break, when one of the workers came over and said that there had been a complaint about us being “disruptive.”

One of my friends asked: “Disruptive in what way?” and the volunteer said that we were being too noisy and it was distracting the players around us. My friend then said: “If you want us to leave, you can refund our money (well over $150 between us) and we will be happy to go and spend our money at another Bingo.” The worker said no, that would not be necessary, we were welcome to stay, but he would appreciate it if we were just a little quieter.

It was ridiculous. Some cranky, uptight cow was apparently incapable of hearing the numbers from the caller or seeing them on the monitors, on the Bingo board or on their Bingo paper because a group of players was talking among themselves? OMG!!!

At the start of the second session we were still pretty mad, but that

MAY 2018 ended during the postage stamp game in round three, which one of my friends won as a single winner.

The jackpot was $150. “Woohoo!

Winner! Winner!” she said as they counted out her money. “How’s that for ‘Disruptive?’”

When she said that, our whole group burst out laughing, as did a number of other players sitting near us, which made us feel better that at least some people in the hall didn’t think we were so terrible.

But I am still bothered all these days later that some people at Bingo are so rigid and intolerant that practically any kind of sound—especially the “disruptive” sound of friends quietly talking or joking—sets them off to say disrespectful things and complain to management. Now that’s rude!

Lighten up, people!!

T.C.C., Nevada Dear T.C.C.: Unfortunately, the tension, suspense and frustration that accompany being so close, and not winning, a Bingo prize can manifest itself in players getting irritated by virtually anything around them: A voice, a laugh, a cough, a sneeze, a nose whistle— you name it, they will get annoyed by it. (Interestingly, the exact same thing can happen to a player staring at a sheet of Bingo cards that barely get a number called.)

I think your primary point is spot-on: Bingo is a game and should be fun. But, Bingo is also a social game with money at stake.

Every player should be thoughtful of all the players around them.

Being too noisy is bound to irritate someone eventually. Refresh your dried-out washable markers with a little marker therapy — something that your kids can do! Dip a dried marker into a very small amount of water — just enough that it takes up the water rather than coloring it. Then wrap the tip with a small piece of plastic wrap, and recap. Let set for an hour or so, then repeat until refreshed. You can do the same with permanent markers using alcohol rather than water.

Looking Out for #1 All across the country there are veterans who might be ill and not know it. The reason: They don’t have the results of their medical tests.

If you have medical tests done at a veterans’ facility, before you leave, ask when the results will be ready. You’ll likely be told, “Someone will call you.”

Get a name and write it down. Later if you start getting anxious because you haven’t gotten a call, give it one more day ... then go on the hunt.

Leave messages for your care manager, if you have one, and your doctor. Give it another day. If you don’t hear back, try again. Call the medical facility and ask for the lab. They’re not likely to give you the results, but ask when the results were ready, and get that person’s name. That’s

part of your ammo ... knowing that results were ready and when. Then call the care manager or doctor back and state that the results were ready at a certain time.

See how this works? Be proactive.

Through all these steps, your name gets out there as someone who’s hunting for test results. The same is true if you have a My HealtheVet account.

Once you get the results over the phone, ask that a copy be mailed to you (or print it from your online account), which you’ll then put in your file at home.

If you have a condition that is regularly monitored, there’s a possibility that you can make pals with someone in the lab who will just read the results to you.

The bottom line is that you don’t stop until you have the results. Stand up for yourself and guard your health. Don’t assume that no news is good news. Be sure. best bud. This movie is confusing.

It mixes real-life Burt Reynolds references and the fantasy actor Vic Edwards. The relationship between Vic and Lil, which I am guessing is supposed to be significant, was uninteresting.

PICKS OF MONTH

THE

LAST MAN IN ALEPPO (NR) — Feras Fayyad’s poignant documentary mixes devastation with the last vestiges of hope in a war-torn wasteland. The White Helmets are the men of the Syrian Civil Defense, unarmed volunteers who rush in when bombs reduce their cities to rubble. They’re the difference between life and death for a staggering number of victims that they pull from the wreckage.

The film follows three of these men — founders Khaled, Subhi and Mahmoud — through the dangerous landscape of Aleppo, the decisions that keep them there, and how the remaining citizens — families, children — manage the anxiety of living from moment to moment. It’s a gripping look into a life of heroes and humans.

THE LAST MOVIE STAR (R) — Burt Reynolds stars as Vic Edwards, a financially unstable, has-been legend who is minorly duped into accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award in person at what turns out to be, basically, a Nashville bar. In response, he diverts his young driver Lil (Ariel Winter) on a tour through Knoxville, where he was born and raised before the flood of celebrity and its aftermath. Chevy Chase guest stars briefly as Reynolds’ ... I mean Edwards’, Hollywood

ROXANNE ROXANNE (NR) — The Duchess of Dis, Roxanne Shante, was the breakthrough female rapper who preceded today’s Cardi B and Nicki Minaj by decades, clawing her way to the top of the New York rap battle scene in the early 1980s. She finally finds the respect she deserves in her very own biopic, streaming exclusively on Netflix. Shante (played by amazing newcomer Chante Adams) was barely out of middle school when she was vaulted to notoriety. This film shows the personal adversity of Shante’s life, the struggle alongside the swagger.

Nia Long is raw as her alcoholic mother, and Mahershala Ali plays the much older, abusive boyfriend who would father her first child.

ACTS OF VIOLENCE (R) — Detective James Avery (Bruce Willis) has been trying to pin an unpinnable crime king whose goons snatch a pretty girl at her bachelorette party. When the police offer no real recourse, the girl’s brothers — military trained Declan (Cole Hauser, notably), Brandon (Shawn Ashmore) and Roman (Ashton Holmes) — pick up where the detective is unable to move ahead. This is a case of truth in advertising: a lot of bullets, brooding and vengeance.

Is it winning Academy Awards?

No. Is it do-able for a pizza and movie night? Absolutely, especially because Bruce Willis plays a stymied, underdog cop.

Memorial For Mom For Mother’s Day this year I decided we should have a small memorial to our mother who died twenty years ago, before I got to know her very well. She was a small woman, barely five feet tall and small in her body parts except for her breasts, which in my small mind were huge. She had brown hair, which she said was curly until she had scarlet fever when it all went straight. She grew up on a horse ranch in Colorado and was forever resentful that her stepfather would let her go to only the second grade, insisting that she drop out and help him with the horses.

She met my father when she went to cook on a big ranch where he worked. They had a lovely sweet romance until he went off to war and they married when he returned. Then they moved to Oregon where Dad went to work for the Williams lumber company.

Eventually they moved to the small

So we went back to this small town and to the cemetery where both our parents are buried and performed a tiny ceremony. I asked for Kate’s earliest memory and she said, “I can remember Mother carrying me to school for what I thought was to be my first day only the teacher wouldn’t let me stay saying I was too much of a baby yet to be in school. I was five but didn’t express an opinion.”

“I remember that,” I said. “I walked even though I was only three, while she carried you. It seemed a long way to the school.”

“Mom was always pretty tough on you,” continued Kate. “I think she was getting you ready to face the world.”

“One of my earliest memories is of falling into Mom’s mop bucket that she had left on the kitchen floor and of holding the fudge dish above my head so it wouldn’t get wet.”

We both laughed and cried a little. “I remember my red straw hat,” I said. “It was shaped like a little bucket and just fit neatly over my head. I don’t know why Mom bought it for me. Maybe she hated my hair.”

“I recall the first Bingo game I took her to,” said Kate. “It was in the old Grange Hall and about half the town showed up to try this new game. I remember how thrilled she was when she won a five-dollar prize. You would have thought it was a hundred. She was hooked on Bingo after that and played whenever we came around to take her. I remember one time I took her to a game in a church basement and her biggest worry was that she was not a member of that church

and didn’t know if she should be taking their money. Of course the buy in was more than she won but we didn’t mention that.”

I added, “The best time I ever had with her at Bingo was one time in the mountains. It was snowing fiercely and we had nothing at all to do so I was really thankful we found this Bingo game right in our hotel.”

“I was with you,” Kate chimed in. “I remember it well. They were practically giving away extras so we had a whole bunch of Bonanzas.

Mom couldn’t quite keep up with the calling so I kept checking her cards. ‘I think you Bingo on the next number,’ I remember whispering. And she did, and we collected $300 to splurge with in the gift shop.”

And so went our memorial to our mother from the Bingo Sisters.

Small Talk, Big Sacrifice When is Bingo small talk NOT small talk? I think in my case, it is when my Bingo buddy decides to give up Bingo for Lent. The very words that were humorous and interesting before Lent, suddenly become dull, boring, monotonous and after six weeks start to drive me up a wall.

I usually play Bingo with the same five or six people every time and if Marge wasn’t so holy, this is what an exciting conversation would sound like.

“I’m set.”

“I’m in. I need 36.”

“They never call that here.”

“I only need six for a cover-all.”

“That’s the last thing I want to hear while I sit here with two cards untouched.”

“Who cares? And besides, you lie. You need seven.”

Evelyn makes the call and we all moan. Someone reminds us: that’s the third time she won tonight.

MAY 2018 “She’s the caller’s wife you know.”

“Oh, I only needed two.”

“Two is too many.”

New game!

“Oh look I only need one right here. See it?”

“Good for you. There are only 70 more numbers to call from. Your chances are pretty good.”

And Myrtle finally gets all excited and asks, “Is this a Bingo?” at which point we all yell bingo for her.

Myrtle is shy. If she had called it she would have felt all the eyes in the hall on her and that would ruin her evening, the money notwithstanding.

I’ve about had it with bingo small talk without Marge by my side—somehow she manages to sit there all evening and concentrate on her cards—about the only time she speaks is when she asks if I would like something from the concession stand.

A few weeks later, when Lent was over and Marge came back to Bingo, I was telling her how agitated I was with all the useless chatter among the others while she was gone.

Marge looked at me with raised quizzical eyebrows, “That’s strange,” she said. “I really missed it.”

I Love It When People Yell!

As you know, if you are a regular reader of this column, I detest quiet Bingo halls. I fully realize that for some of us it takes concentration to hear the numbers. But, I also realize, that too many Bingo facilities— partly because of existing state laws and the fact that too many people only play Bingo to win—are more like a library than a place to have fun.

There are two ways to play Bingo. First, go to a big hall with big payouts. Things there are likely to be cut-and-dried. Sadly, most employees find themselves in a boring job calmly calling out numbers with no jokes, no laughs, nothing but monotonous recitations of numbers.

My heart really goes out to those employees who are forced to act as if they are zombies. Hey, I have an idea; I will begin to call that type of ultra-boring, keep quiet and shut up, “Zombie Bingo.”

On the other hand, REAL Bingo is being played at Elks Lodges, parochial schools and small venues. These are the places where everyone knows everyone. These are the kinds of halls where people shout at each other in the spirit of fun. It’s not uncommon to hear someone yell, when someone has just won a game: “Congratulations, darn it!”

OK, Bob, where is all of this going? Glad you asked. The other

night someone asked me why I shout, “FORTY!!” when that number is called. Decades ago a group of senior citizens was playing in a hall in Fontana, California.

Their evening consisted of having dinner together in the hall, ending up just as the games began. This particular evening they had been talking about comedian Jack Benny. Someone mentioned that no matter how old Benny got, he always claimed to be 39. “Wow, if a person were 40 that would REALLY be old!” one of the players quipped. Within a minute, dinner was over and Game One was starting. The first number out of the cage was 40. Remembering the fact that someone had just said how horribly old 40 would be, one of the people in the group shouted out, “FORTY!” Now, I can’t vouch for how true that is, but yelling “FORTY!” when the number is called is still something that some people do.

Unless I am playing in a hall were the demeanor is Zombie Bingo, I love yelling, “FORTY.” Saying that, I think I’ll head out for some Zombie Bingo this week. I’ll sit and wait for the number 40 to be called. When it is … watch out!

Mother’s Day the Ray Way Hi Guy, Not sure if you’ve covered this topic or if this an obvious thing, but thought you might want to write about taking Mom to Bingo on Mother’s Day. I’ve been taking my Mom to Bingo on Mother’s Day for at least eight years now, possibly longer.

We started one year when she and I were talking on the phone and discussing plans for her special day. Apparently I was a little late in bringing up the subject because she already had plans for church with my eldest sister Sunday morning and brunch with my brother and her family that afternoon. I proposed we have dinner together, which wasn’t very original but at least would close out her Mother’s Day. She agreed and our plans were set.

As we continued to chat, she mentioned that a friend of hers, who also was her Bingo buddy, had been sick and that they had not been to Bingo in several weeks because her friend was the one who drove them to Bingo games.

A light went off in my head and I suggested that along with dinner on Mother’s Day, afterward we could go out for an evening of Bingo. Mom got very excited about this idea, which made me chuckle to myself about how unexcited she had been when the plan was for plain old dinner with plain old me.

Typically Mom is a church hall/ charity Bingo player, so I decided to throw her an extra curve and take her to a casino that was about a twenty-minute thruway drive from her condo. The casino also had several restaurants of different styles and sizes, so that became our dinner destination as well.

The minute we got on the thruway she guessed where we were headed, and her excitement tripled. We chatted about food options during the drive and quickly settled on Asian which was her favorite and which had been the original destination for her brunch earlier in the day but was changed due to the long lines at the Chinese buffet my brother had chosen. (This was an unexpected bonus: I could easily imagine the look on my brother’s face the next time he and my Mother talked and she filled him in our Bingo outing and the Asian dinner we enjoyed and he had failed to provide.)

The casino ended up being fairly busy but not overly crowded and we were able to get into the restaurant right away and had a very nice meal. From there it was straight to the Bingo hall which was also pretty busy but still had plenty of seating for us to spread out.

There were no jackpot wins for either of us that Mother’s Day, but plenty of other Moms in the

MAY 2018 room did well that night. On the drive home I suggest that we should think about making this our Mother’s Day tradition, which Mom agreed to before I’d even got out all the words.

We’ve done exactly that every year since, and have expanded to include her birthday and one or two floating Bingo outings when her friends are busy and I am free.

Bingo is a great way for my Mom and I to share time together with an activity she truly enjoys.

Plus, my brother and sister are incredibly jealous that they didn’t think of it first. Whenever they’ve suggested it, Mom politely says no…that Bingo is just between the two of us.

Many people have clued in to the fact that Bingo is a fantastic outing for birthdays, Mother’s Days, Father’s Days and other holidays, even for people who are not regular players. After all, it’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s social, it’s novel, and someone could walk away with a nice big jackpot besides!

I’m super happy you and your mother came up with this special way to celebrate her special days. And as someone with three sisters and a brother, all of whom are extremely competitive, I can appreciate what a kick you must get out of this shared experience with your mother that your sibling are stuck on the sidelines for.

I hope this year’s Mother’s Day will be another great one for the two of you.

A Little Too Much Q: I had animals all my life until my wife and dog died seven years ago. I got a cat two years ago when a neighbor moved. Last year, another neighbor gave us her cat after having a baby. The two cats — both fixed females — got along fine from start. What’s curious is, one jumps up on my bed every night and walks up to my face.

When I put my hand out to pat her, she starts licking my arm, wrist to elbow, with her sandpaper tongue!

Seems she is checking that I have not deserted her! Do I taste that good? What’s so tempting about my arm? — Dr. William H., Central Falls, Rhode Island A: You may taste pretty good to your cat, but I think you’re on the right track when you say she seems to be checking that you have not deserted her. Many experts believe that cats groom their housemates — both felines and humans — as a way of showing they accept you as family, that they trust you and that they are caring for you.

Sometimes excessive licking is a sign that a cat wants more attention. It can also be a sign of anxiety or stress. However, that seems unlikely since your cat does this routinely and seems calm.

So the only question that remains is: Does it annoy you? If so, try gently redirecting the cat from your arm, maybe to snuggle against your shoulder. If it’s really annoying or she doesn’t stop after a few redirects, get up and walk away for a few minutes. She may eventually get the message.

Of course, it’s not without its problems. Take, for instance, the case of the 23-year-old Canadian woman driving through the Ontario town of Tobermory.

She was a stranger there, so — as most of us would — she was using her GPS. Evidently, she was so intent on following the directions provided to her that she wasn’t paying attention to where those directions were taking her -- that is, until she ended up in Georgian Bay. She made it to shore safely, but her car didn’t. * It seems that artist Leonardo da Vinci pioneered the paint-bynumbers style of art. He would sketch a piece, then number certain sections for his assistants to paint.

Martingale System Many players use the Martingale betting system for blackjack (and other casino games). The reason is the betting system is easy to use and seems logical. You just double your bet after every loss until you finally win, at which point you will be ahead by one betting unit.

For example, suppose you wager $10 and the results of the next three hands are loss, loss, and win (L-L-W). Using the Martingale system, you lost $10 on the first hand, $20 on the second hand, and won $40 on the third hand.

You wind up with a net win of $10, which is the goal of the progression, to win an amount equal to your starting wager.

How can there be anything wrong with the logic of the Martingale?

Just leave the table after a win and you always walk away with a profit. Right? Well, yes and no.

Long streaks of consecutive losses will doom the Martingale player, but pundits will always counter with “the chance that this will happen is slim.” Really? Let’s take a look.

You have about a 52 percent chance of losing a hand in blackjack (excluding ties). The chance that you will lose, say, ten consecutive (resolved) hands is 0.145 percent, meaning you will average one sequence of ten losing hands (excluding ties) in about every 692 sequences of ten hands, and so, this losing streak will occur about once in every seven hours of play (assuming you play 100 resolved hands per hour). And get this… you don’t know when that string of ten consecutive losses will occur in the seven hours (of course, it may not occur at all). The math says that you have roughly a 12 percent

MAY 2018 chance of losing ten in a row in the first hour; a 24 percent in the first two hours; and a whopping 51 percent chance after only five hours (i.e., you are the favorite to have had at least one losing streak of 10 resolved hands!). Sadly for Martingale bettors, a streak of ten consecutive losses is not such a rare event after all.

What about all those frequent winning sessions that Martingale players (and system sellers) always tout about this system? The fact is this: although most players will walk away a small winner most of the time, the money you will lose in that one catastrophic losing session will more than completely wipe out all the money that you will win in your more frequent winning sessions. In the long run, your wins and losses will add up to the casino’s edge, and the amount of money that you will lose using the Martingale betting system will be close to the casino’s theoretical edge in the game, times the total amount of money that you wagered, the same as it is for every other player who plays blackjack (except card counters). In other words, mathematically speaking, you can’t, and you won’t, gain the advantage over the casino using a Martingale betting system.

There is another more practical issue with the Martingale that also dooms most players who use it, and it’s this: on an extended losing streak, you may not be able to double-up your bets because you will bump up against the maximum betting limit imposed by casinos. For example, suppose you are a $5 bettor and you lose eight (resolved) hands in a row.

Your losses at this point total $1,275 (gulp!). Assuming you have the bankroll (and the guts) to double up again, your next wager according to the Martingale is $1,280, which exceeds the $1,000 table-betting limit (that you’ll find in most casinos on low-limit tables). Unfortunately, there is no way for the progressive bettor to bet enough to recoup his losses when this occurs (other than to move to a higher-limit table).

What's News in Nevada . . .

NO PARACHUTE FOR WYNN Company records show that the termination agreement between embattled casino mogul Steve Wynn and the company bearing his name means that Wynn won’t receive any compensation and can’t be involved in any competing gambling business for two years.

The terms of the agreement were released by Wynn Resorts. Wynn resigned as CEO earlier this year amid sexual misconduct allegations.

CRUISE EXEC AT MGM Gaming giant MGM Resorts International says that it has named Jan Swartz to its board.

Swartz is an experienced cruise ship executive. One of her first jobs, according to a media release, will be working to secure one of the first casino licenses in Japan. This comes in the wake of that country’s ratification of the so-called Integrated Resort Implementation Bill. Swartz comes to the board from Princess Cruises and Carnival Corporation.

DRINK MONITOR The Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino is the latest venue in the area to introduce a new system that checks complimentary drink orders. Early reports are that even though gaming houses seem to be happy with the technology, many players say they are not. Some report that it will affect the process of free drink-giving which, to this point, has drawn in gamblers.

LUCKY DRAGON NOT SO LUCKY Reports are showing that the first purpose-built gaming project in Las Vegas since the recession of 2008 is in bankruptcy after being served with a foreclosure notice this year. It took five years to complete the Lucky Dragon. It first opened in the winter of 2016.

According to local publications, the hotel›s management stated the movement toward bankruptcy would, «preserve jobs, make it possible to pay creditors and provide certainty to the market.»

The Lucky Dragon was appraised at more than $140-million.

REVENUE REPORTS Nevada regulators report that the state’s gambling revenues crossed the psychologically important $1-billion threshold earlier this year, despite a 2.1 percent decline compared to last year. Data show that casinos statewide earned about $1.02 billion from gamblers.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas Strip casinos saw their winnings decline 8.9 percent to about $554.8 million.

GAMING ALLIANCE According to published reports, the Las Vegas-based independent gaming testing laboratory BMM International has announced a partnership with the American Gaming Association. BMM said that the multi-year strategic alliance will allow for the sharing of its expertise on regulatory and gaming issues. BMM has been involved in independent testing since the early 1980s.

Invariably I am in a small room packed with students who aren’t listening to a word I say. Spit balls fly at my head as I try to gain control and establish order in a situation beyond chaos. In thirtyfive years of real life teaching, I never experienced anything even close to what is portrayed in my dreams. My classroom was always quiet and the students were mostly respectful. No spitballs flew, although once while on recess duty, I did accidentally get hit in the face with a basketball. At Christmas and on the last day of school I would allow my students to play bingo for small prizes with everyone eventually getting something as a reward. To say my students loved the game was putting it mildly. I probably hooked several generations of children on the fun of playing bingo and I picture them gleefully continuing to play as adults.

My dreaming about teaching usually occurs in September and May, the beginning and end of the school year, so it’s logical that I would be thinking about my past career. Besides that, National Teacher Day, also called National Teacher Appreciation Day, is in May. This year it’s Tuesday, May 8th. Mattye Woodridge first proposed such a day in 1944 and in 1953 former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt convinced Congress to make it official. In 1985, the day was moved from March to the first

week in May. Therefore, a big shout out and thank you to all teachers, retired or active. They value our children and strive to teach them not only textbook lessons, but also lessons for daily living. They are counselors, nurses, problem solvers, and sometimes substitute parents. I have to confess though that my dreams about teaching freak me out. I wake up in a cold sweat because of the lack of control and then I remember that I’m retired. “It’s all good,” I say, as I roll over and go back to sleep.

Memorial Day, May 28, is just around the corner. As in the past I encourage you to take a moment to recognize the sacrifices of those who serve in our military.

My Uncle John was a WW 2 vet.

He rests in a peaceful hillside cemetery alongside my aunt. She did her part in the war effort as a shipyard worker. We have a few pics of Uncle John in uniform, but he never talked about what he endured. Neither did my cousin Gene, a Viet Nam vet, who lies in a different peaceful cemetery. The Gene who left for duty was not the Gene who returned. These vets like many others suffered in silence; unwilling or unable to share their pain with those who loved them. I encourage you to reach out to vets you know. Give them a hug. Buy them dinner. Take them to bingo.
