Tichigan Lake Lions Club Bingo is back on March 7th, 2019. They play Bingo on the 1st, 3rd & 5th Thursdays of the month. Door open at 4:30 PM, Early Bird Bingo begins at 6:30 PM with regular session Bingo starting at 7:00 PM. They give away $1,250 in prizes at every night of Bingo. If that’s not enough for you, they also play a Progressive Bingo Game every night they play. Tichigan Lions also serves food, beverages and they have Pull Tabs for sale. We can’t wait to get back there this Spring to see the progress.

We caught up with Pam Saddy, our Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes winner at the Tichigan Civic Center, the home of Tichigan Lake Lions Club Bingo. Pam was happy to talk to us about her Bingo experience at Tichigan Lions.

Pam told us that she started playing Bingo when she was 19 years old with her mom. Her mom always told her, “Put your name in the Bingo Bugle, you could be a winner”.

and told them to stop. One of them did, but the other one just kept on barking at her all red faced and wild. She was practically spitting!

Political Debate at Bingo Dear Readers: A few months ago, a letter appeared in this column from a reader who was alarmed by a disagreement that took place between two players while she was attending Bingo. The argument was political in nature, grew quite heated, and eventually required the caller to step in and end it.

Apparently, this was not an isolated incident; a number of readers wrote in to say that they have witnessed similar disagreements at Bingo and elsewhere. Some of these letters follow. —Aunt Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo: I literally just got home from Bingo with my copy of the latest issue of your Bingo paper and was very interested to read the letter from Barbara M. who wrote in to you about witnessing people getting into a political argument while at Bingo.

I was surprised to see the letter because not two hours earlier the exact same thing happened at my Bingo hall. Several people got into a shouting match over some issue related to President Donald Trump. And I am not exaggerating when I call it a shouting match: These people were yelling at the top of their lungs at each other— one criticizing the president and the other defending him—and I thought for sure someone was going to get punched before the argument was over.

Players sitting near the commotion began gathering their things and moving to other seats.

Dear Aunt Bingo: It is interesting that somebody wrote you a letter about people fighting at Bingo. I have seen this happen twice not too long ago… one time in the parking lot of the Bingo where two people actually grabbed each other and wrestled while they shouted at each other (both women), and the other time inside the Bingo center where a couple of men got into it during a break between sessions.

Just like with the case of the person who wrote in to you, both times it was about the political situation in the United States today. And both times it started with someone expressing an opinion to a companion and being overheard by a third party who had to jump in and turn the conversation into an argument.

To me it is amazing that, regardless of what side of the political spectrum you are on, today the atmosphere is so tense that expressing an opinion can suddenly find you being attacked by a complete stranger who overheard something you said and didn’t like it.

Eye Witness, Texas, via email Dear Aunt Bingo: Just FYI…I am a patriot. If I hear someone talking smack about this country or our leaders, I sure as hell am going to speak up. And I have done so: at Bingo, at the grocery store, on the street, wherever.

Sure, they have the right to say whatever they want. That’s what freedom of speech is all about.

But I have that same right. And I am not going to sit by silent when someone is spouting off against this great nation.

The VA Is All Ears Between the fall of 2017 and September 2018, 1.6 million of us were surveyed about our trust in Department of Veterans Affairs health care after we’d had an outpatient appointment for anything from physical therapy and primary care to cardiology and mental health. A VA press release says that our trust level in VA health care rose 2.4 percent during that period. The trust number now is at 88 percent, with a VA target goal of 90 percent by September 2019.

There’s another number, however, buried in the actual survey results, that might be even more important. Respondents were asked to reply on a scale of 1-5 (Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree) to the following statement: “I trust VA to fulfill our country’s commitment to Veterans.” The

THE

First Man (PG-13) — The controversial Neil Armstrong biopic First Man does two things: First, it does a commendable job of putting the viewer inside the rocket — the successes and the disasters.

Second, it takes a deep dive into the personal life of Armstrong, played stoic and restrained by Ryan Gosling. Armstrong had a rocky road to the moon, from test pilot crashes and personal tragedy, and director Damien Chazelle (who paired with Gosling on La La Land) highlights his perseverance through the perilous space race — lost personnel and failed missions that might have sent less enduring astronauts reeling. Although I don’t feel like I know Armstrong any better, the film is worthwhile if only for the NASA history lessons it imparts.

The Hate U Give (PG-13) — Weighty topics are explored in The Hate U Give, based on the YA novel by Angie Thomas. Amandla Stenberg plays Starr, a young black woman caught between two worlds: her neighborhood, a poor to working-class area rife with gang activity; and her school, packed with peers who are predominantly white and privileged. When her best friend — a young black man from the neighborhood named

Your best bet: If you receive a non-medical VA benefit or service and you get one of those surveys, respond. Fill it out. Be honest. A typical VA survey might get only a 20 percent response rate. If there’s space to leave comments, do that.

If you’re a veteran, caregiver, dependent or service provider (for example, a funeral home), and if you have an email address on record with the VA, you’ll likely get an email invitation to participate within the quarter. If you’re a veteran and you receive a healthcare service, you’ll likely get your email invitation to fill out the survey within two weeks.

Right now, they’re listening.

Don’t let them set policy or rules (or budget) based on the opinion of only 20 percent of those surveyed.

Make sure your voice is heard.

Khalil — is shot at a traffic stop, Starr becomes an unwitting witness to injustice. The story makes national news, and Starr must navigate gang violence, neighborhood politics, class inequality, police and community relations, racial tension and youth activism, all while finding a way to heal.

Johnny English Strikes Again (PG) — Rowan Atkinson returns as the titular Johnny English, the surprise spy who’s wholly and perhaps delightfully unaware that he’s ridiculously out of his element.

A cyberattack has revealed the identities of all the British operatives, so Agent English is called up to investigate and find the cyberbrains behind the attack.

The gag is that Johnny English is a rotary phone in a cellular world, and gag after gag after pratfall and awkward situation reminds us of it. I feel like you either get Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) or you don’t.

If you do, you’ll like this movie.

American Renegades (R) — Navy Seal Matt Barnes (Sullivan Stapleton) leads a ragtag but surprisingly good-looking group of soldiers on an off-the-books mission to recover a pile of Nazi gold. As the story goes, the noble townspeople, rather than have one put over on them, flooded the WHOLE TOWN. So that bullion is at the bottom of a big old lake.

Take that, Nazis. Fast-forward to the now, and our cowboys aim to take it back — because Navy Seals can dive. Get it? The story is good (Luc Besson wrote the script), but this movie is so bad that not even J.K. Simmons as the commander can save it.

Heigh-ho and off to Bingo we go We have three Jo Ann’s in our small group of happy Bingo players. One goes by Jo Ann, one

by Joanie, and the third by Jo. Jo Ann is tall, very thin and elegant, Joanie is stocky with red hair and Jo is just round. Once in awhile they are all able to come to Bingo at the same time and that is guaranteed to be hilarious.

The five of us started off in great good humor for a big lunch and a great Bingo game. Kate and I were in the front seat and our three passengers in the back. I turned to speak to them and simultaneously they burst into song, “Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to Bingo we go.”

We laughed so hard Kate almost drove off the road. She pulled into a wayside stop, wiped her eyes and then went in for a brief rest stop.

Things were calmer until we got to the gaming hall. When the

MARCH 2019 three got out of the back seat, they linked arms at the elbows and began singing “Zip-a-dee-doodah, zip-a-dee-ay, we are gonna play Bingo today.” And they sang it all the way in to the lunch buffet where hunger and greed overcame the need to show off.

The three J’s are so much fun to be with, it was Bingo time in what seemed to be seconds. They sat around the end of a table and I noticed for the first time that they changed positions at the end of every second game.

“Just superstition,” explained Joanie. “We switch to let the good luck in.”

It seemed their theory was working as first one, two, then all three of them were on for the next game. It didn’t seem possible, but none of them won and we moved cheerfully on to the next game.

This time it was three around three corners (no N’s) and before long, Jo was on and ready for a big win. It seemed as if fate were against them because she didn’t win once again.

They changed positions and were ready when the caller announced there had been a mistake in the previous game and it was to go on until someone else won. The three J’s were very excited, especially when Jo won. She carefully split the money into three piles, sharing it with her cohorts. There was one dollar left over and she gave it to Kate saying, “For driving us safely and comfortably.”

“That doesn’t seem like much,” mumbled Kate, accepting the tip.

When it came time for Bonanza, Joanie was more than a little excited. “I just know I’m going to

win this one,” she said. “I have a feeling.”

She was on very soon and we all chanted her number to bring it up, but once again we were disappointed when a player at the next table got the win.

When the final blackout came around, we were all anxious to play, but this time it was Kate who was lucky. She won the on-theway game but not the big blackout.

She was philosophical, however, saying she had had a really good time and was looking forward to doing it again.

“With us three?” asked Jo Ann. “Of course,” said Kate. “Who else knows such great songs?” and we exited all singing, “Zip-a-deedoo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay, we had fun playing Bingo today!”

My How Things Have Changed It all started during the great depression in the late twenties.

It was a simple little recreational game. The clientele consisted mostly of women and well-behaved children who met in the parish church basement. The cards were one per person and they came with a few dried beans to cover the numbers. The prize was a ham, or a turkey, or a basket of food. The call was Beano. When the economy got better the ladies didn’t want to stop playing Beano. So the games continued but the prizes became cash and we gradually began to play two or more cards. There was no limit as long as you could keep up with the caller and had enough dimes or quarters to pay for them.

It was simple, clean, innocent fun.

It wasn’t long till someone figured out that with a little finesse Beano could become a source of income for clubs, schools and churches.

That’s when a little song about a dog by the name of Bingo became famous and the games sprung up everywhere.

Beano became Bingo and

eventually men joined their wives at the table. We began to notice some suspicious little irregularities, like an unusual number of wins by one person, or there were house players who got free cards with the understanding that the winnings would go back to the club.

Sometimes players showed up early and spread out cards right up front for their friends. At this point there were two rules usually decided by the house. No saving seats, and if you leave you must turn in your cards. Until the late sixties Bingo equipment was the equivalent of toys, which had become old and not very accurate. There were plenty of opportunities for questionable practices. The crowds became unruly and it turned into one big night of nonsense. It was common to flip popcorn at other patrons or point a peashooter at the caller, who protested loudly that he had no control over the numbers.

Then things changed. Lighted display boards, and air blown bouncing balls, and video monitors began to appear, and the houses that installed them captured the bulk of players. It was just a matter of time till the State stepped in and expensive licenses were required.

Several States followed with a long list of rules. Tennessee held out the longest. Bingo became illegal there.

Players carried the Bible in and if the Feds showed up they quickly stuck the cards in the Bible. Then they closed their eyes and with hands in the air weaved from left to right singing Amazing Grace. It wasn’t long till Tennessee got the privilege of buying a license.

We’re right on the edge of going all computers. You just show up, order your meal and stare at the monitor if you care to. Or you can join in the poker games. You don’t have to worry about missing a Bingo. The computer will holler for you.

You know, it’s funny. My dad could add four-digit numbers in his head. I can’t add two and two.

That is why I find it very difficult to play more than a six-on Bingo card or to remember all the possible winning combinations.

I would like to take this month’s column to make a STRONG PLEA to Bingo managers to re-think the number of patterns that can produce a winner. Even though I LOVE the way Bingo is handled in my old grade school in Indiana– you remember, the place where I first played Bingo in 1957–I think they have far too many possible winning combinations.

So, my point is that there is a temptation to assume that in Bingo halls where you can either buy paper or an electronic machine, that the hall makes the games so confusing that people opt to spend more money than they planned in order to buy a machine. There is one hall in southern California where the numbers are called so quickly and the winning patterns so complicated that few CAN successfully play paper.

I mentioned that to the Bingo manager. His reply was: “Buy a machine!” I got the message. I

never went back.

I do, though, love the addition of FOUR CORNERS as a winning combination. Far too few halls, though, have that as a winning pattern. So, the bottom line is: Unless your hall’s management dictates that the winning combinations on paper be so complicated that people are forced to buy a machine, then…lighten up!

I would think there are a lot of other people who, like me, have trouble keeping track of anything but simple Bingo patterns. I would assume that I likely have won several times in the past, but didn’t realize it.

This all reminds me of a woman who used to play five six-on cards at a hall in Las Vegas and never daubed any card, until she had a winner. She kept all the patterns in her head. I nearly fainted the first time I saw her do that.

Now, I know that some of you reading this are saying: “Hey, Bob, you are simply a player. I am a Bingo expert. I know how to design the games.” My answer to that is: “When was the last time you sat and talked to the average player?

How often do you get feedback?”

A Rift over Splitting Hi Guy, I am seriously steamed!

My cousin and I started going to Bingo regularly together (one or two times a week) a little over a year ago. The Bingo was her idea, but I went along with it because it was something to do while we spent time together. As it turns out, I fell in love with Bingo after not playing for years and years, so it ended up being a really fun outing for both of us.

Early on, we made the agreement to split our winnings because our thinking was that this doubled our chances of getting part of a jackpot.

The first person to Bingo was me.

It was super exciting even though it was a multiple win and I ended up only getting $25, but per our agreement we split it for $12.50 each. I won a second time and got $50, which again I split with my cousin.

The third win was my cousin’s and she won $100, which she split with me. But it was a little weird.

When I won and we split the pot we laughed and had fun with it.

But now that she was the winner, she didn’t act like it was fun at all and seemed almost reluctant to

give me my share. But she did, so I shrugged it off and didn’t give it another thought.

Our next Bingo win was again mine, also for $100, and we split the money and everything was fun and laughs again. Then, that same week, my cousin won our first super jackpot at Bingo of $850, which was obviously very exciting.

The worker paid her, and that was when the excitement came to an end.

My cousin looked at me and said that she had been thinking about this for a while and decided that we shouldn’t split our pots anymore. She then handed me $50—the amount of her share of the pot I had previously won and split with her—and told me I could have her share back and from now on our pot-sharing was over.

I was stunned. I didn’t care that she didn’t want to share our winnings anymore. But I was upset that she waited until she got her first sizable win to drop the axe. And I told her so. Firmly.

We played the rest of the session in silence and parted ways in the hall parking lot. It was the first time in ages we didn’t hug goodbye.

Right now I’m still mad, and hurt, and do not plan on going to Bingo with her again anytime soon.

As far as I’m concerned, a deal is a deal. While your cousin certainly has every right to end your agreement to share Bingo

winnings, it was wrong of her to wait until she hit a big payout to decide not to split your prize money anymore.

What she should have done was divide the jackpot with you, then said it was hard for her to do it and maybe the pot-splitting agreement should come to an end.

But to pocket $425 that should have been yours and hand you $50 from a previous split and act like that made things even, well, that’s just bad manners. (And from family, no less!)

Frankly, I’m not sure how you come back from this situation.

Obviously, the two of you are tight and it would be a shame to end your relationship over a few hundred dollars. My hope is that your cousin realizes that what she did was wrong and forks over the money. Short of that, I guess you are left with the decision of whether or not you can forgive, let it go and move on. —Guy Readers: How would you handle this situation if you were in this person’s shoes? Insuring a Good Hand A friend of mine was watching me play blackjack in a casino. I was playing heads-up against the dealer in a double-deck game. He didn’t say much to me while I was playing other than to give me an “atta boy” when I beat the dealer, or offer condolences when the dealer pulled a miracle draw to beat me.

After about forty-five minutes of playing, we broke for lunch. My friend is a typical casual blackjack player and he queried me about some of the insurance bets that I made. “How come you sometimes insured your 20s and other times you didn’t, and why did you insure your 7? I always thought you’re supposed to insure your good hands and not your bad hands?”

I proceeded to explain to him the following.

When you make the insurance bet, you are betting on the dealer’s hand, not your hand. Specifically, you are betting that the dealer has a ten-value card in the hole for a

MARCH 2019 blackjack. Insurance is a bad bet, I told him, but it’s an even worse bet when you are holding a pair of 10s rather than a weak hand that contains no tens. I asked him, “Can you see why?”

He still had a confused look on his face, so I continued. If your hand contains two 10s, you’ve taken out of play two of the very cards that you are betting that the dealer has, making the odds worse compared to your holding a hand that contained no 10s. The light bulb finally went on in his hand.

“OK,” he said, “Now I understand why it’s worse to insure a 20 rather than a 7 but how come you sometimes insured your 20?”

I went on to explain that the reason the insurance bet, per se, is a bad bet for non-counters is because you’re getting paid 2-1 on a bet that has greater than 2-1 odds against winning. But, if you were tracking the cards as they were played, which I was, insurance becomes a profitable play when the number of 10s in the remaining decks is greater than half the number of non-10s.

Card-counting systems will alert you when this situation occurs, which is why the insurance bet can be profitable for card counters regardless of what hand they happen to be holding.

“Oh,” he said, “So it’s not whether you have a good hand like 20 that determines whether you make the insurance bet, but rather if the remaining cards are loaded with 10s. I guess I should stop insuring my good hands until I learn card counting.” I finally smiled and said, “Now you’ve got it!”

What's News in Nevada . . .

Ground Broken on “Garage Mahal” Construction can now start on a planned 1.25-million square foot “mega-resort” in the “Old Town” section of Las Vegas. The facility will boast 777 rooms and a 44-story tower. A massive parking structure will serve the hotel/ casino and neighboring downtown venues. The structure has already been nicknamed the “Garage Mahal.” The sports book will be on three levels. The theme of the huge complex will reflect past decades in Las Vegas. The neon cowgirl, Vegas Vickie, will be incorporated into the lobby design. The new facility could open in time for Christmas of next year.

Crab Lovers Scammed What almost seemed too good to be true turned out that way. Lured by an ad on a Website, people in and around Las Vegas pre-paid either $10 for a “one-pound crab dinner” or $50 for a unbelievable, unlimited crab and gourmet buffet that featured champagne. When they arrived with their tickets at the address listed they found a high-rise office building and NO restaurant or buffet. The incident could serve as a warning about come-ons and gimmicks in any tourist city that ARE too good to be true.

AMEX Lounge Closes American Express tells media that its popular Centurion Lounge at McCarran International Airport has been closed for renovations, until further notice. Under the rules

of the lounge, American Express cardholders with Platinum, Business Platinum, and Centurion cards get complimentary access to any Centurion Lounge. There are seven other such lounges at U.S. airports and one at the Hong Kong International Airport.

World Series of Darts A press release indicates that the Professional Darts Corporation World Series of Darts North American championship and the US Darts Masters finals are returning to Las Vegas for the third year in a row. The competitions, to be held in July, will be at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

After qualifications, eight players will vie for the North American title and a place in the 2019-2020 World Darts Championship on July 4. The same eight players will compete in the US Darts Masters along with eight top PDC stars in the main World Series of Darts event on July 4 and 5. Some U.S. bars feature dartboards, but the sport is huge in Europe.

Manzo Coming to Vegas Creators of a new restaurant in the 24-hour food court at the Park MGM have named their project Manzo, the Italian word for “beef.”

The new facility is being described as a “formal sit-down Italian restaurant.” There is an existing Manzo in New York City. It’s been billed as a “casual butcher’s restaurant.” There are indications that the new Vegas restaurant will have a similar motif.

Oh, Poo! May those who love us, love us; and may God turn the hearts of those who don’t love us. And if he doesn’t, then may He turn their ankles so we will know them by their limping. —Irish Prayer Ah, March. Watch out for leprechauns and don’t forget to wear green. Unless you’re my husband who perversely wears orange because he says green is for Irish Catholics and orange is for Irish Protestants. He also says if I don’t inform my readers of this in every March column, he will pinch me; a common practice in March for those not wearing the specified color. Ha, as if he’d dare do that because I’d just pinch him harder in return.

I always feel lucky in March. Maybe it’s because I see leprechauns depicted everywhere and they know where the pots of gold are buried. According to legend leprechauns are always males.

Since they are mostly portrayed as grouchy, untrusting, and generally irritating creatures, maybe that’s understandable. Hee hee hee.

So, since I’m feeling lucky this month, how can I follow through on that feeling and improve my chances of winning at bingo?

One way is to step in cacca, that is, poo. Years ago, poo was considered important since it was used as crop fertilizer, in making buildings, and even in medicine.

Today in other parts of the world, people buy poo shaped key chains and poo shaped smart phone battery chargers to summon good

luck. Whether it does or not, I can assure you of one thing. If you don’t thoroughly clean and wipe your shoes afterwards, both strangers and acquaintances will keep their distance. Years ago, at bingo there was an obvious stench at our table. Everyone kept looking at me while I was looking at them.

Finally, we all checked our shoes and phew! I had a big gob of dog poo on my shoe. I scurried to the bathroom and my tablemates literally breathed a sigh of relief.

It’s funnier now than it was then.

I’ve often written in this column about my love of the color red. My closet bulges with red clothes and I always use a red dauber at bingo. I feel lucky in red and I’ve found out why. I read that those of us born on December 18th, my birthday, are ruled by the planet Mars, the red planet; therefore, we can rightfully be called Martians. On another topic, one final thing I want to mention is that the first week of March is National Write A Letter of Appreciation Week.

Mostly people text and email these days, but there’s something about a handwritten letter that is warm and special.

I treasure my handwritten letters from Shirley Mason (www.sybilsfriend.com), my friend with multiple personalities, as I treasure those from my #1 fan, Carolyn. Letters can be reread and savored long after the person who wrote them is gone.
