Wisconsin Edition Lydia Plays Bingo at Knights of Columbus in We’re Sad to South Milwaukee. She won the Sweepstakes! Report - United The best part of being a Seniors Bingo reporter for the Bingo Buis Closing gle is interviewing interesting and wonderful Bingo players. This month, our Sweepstakes Winner is Lydia Kaczmarek and she plays Bingo in South Milwaukee at the Knights of Columbus Council 1709 at 732 Badger Ave. We asked Lydia what was her favorite thing about Bingo, she said,”Winning of course”, then she gave us a little laugh and continued, “Most of all I enjoy being with all these nice people. Every week, I look for them and we all sit together and play Bingo, I just love that.” Getting back to talk about winning, Lydia told us about an exciting big win that she had. “Once I won a big pot at Saint Franciis Lions Club. It was $3,500 and boy-o-boy was that exciting.” We were interested to find out how often she’s able to play Bingo. She said,”Too often” and gave us another little chuckle. “I play Bingo at the Knights of Columbus every week and I have my reasons, I like the games that they play here and the place is bright and clean. They serve good food at a great price. A very important aspect is they have great callers who are happy people with a clear voice and you can easily understand the numbers they call. They call at an even rythm, not too fast, not too slow. Everybody is happy and friendly here and I just love it”. That’s quite a rousing endorsement of Knights of Columbus Bingo. We are sad to report that after many years of great Bingo and support to the community and veterans groups, United Seniors of Wisconsin has found it necessary to discontinue Bingo. Share and Share Alike? Dear Aunt Bingo, I have a dear friend who is also a Bingo buddy. Every so often she will bring up the topic of people who play Bingo together and have an agreement that whatever prize money they win, they share. It is pretty obvious to me that she would like us to do the same thing. But to be honest, she isn’t very lucky—I win more often than she does and would be on the losing end of the stick if I agreed to share our winnings. I do not believe for a minute that she is trying to dip into my winnings because she does not win a lot. I truly believe that it is a Bingo buddy friendship thing and that she likes the idea of “partnering” because we are friends. But I simply do not want to do it. So far, I’ve just kind of listened and nodded and changed the subject whenever the topic of prize splitting has come up. Do you have any suggestions about how

Dear Single, The reason the topic keeps coming up is because you have never clearly stated your feelings about sharing winnings. My suggestion would be that the next time the subject is introduced, don’t dodge it or change the topic. Simply respond that yes, you’ve heard about people doing this, but that it is something you do not understand and would never do yourself. This way you are rejecting the “idea” and not your friend, which I believe is your number one concern. Personally, I would not wait until my friend mentioned it again; I would bring it up myself so that I am in charge of the conversation, and tell some kind of story about how sharing the pot caused a problem for you or someone else—which is why you wouldn’t do it. Your friend might disagree, but in the end, you can state flatly that it is simply something you would never do. Case closed. Here is a little something else to consider. You say you have been lucky, and your friend has not. You know that luck has a way of shifting. Perhaps your winning streak is about to fade, and your friend’s is about to start. 10-Foot Stack of Mail Sits Unopened at VA

Imagine a pile of mail heaped 10 feet high sitting unopened for 10 months. That’s what was found in the basement of a rented Department of Veterans Affairs facility in Atlanta. When investigated, the stack was determined to contain 17,660 pieces of mail that included claims, correspondence, 10,020 medical records and $207,000 in checks, some of which had already expired. The problems began when a health care arm of the VA wanted to commandeer the basement space being used by a VA payments group. They came to a verbal agreement that the new group would take over dealing with the mail if the payment group left. Except nobody asked the new group if they even knew how to process correspondence, records and checks. Apparently, nobody did. So, although the new people

took a stab at dealing with the mail, for the most part the pile sat and grew as more mail came in. The new group asked the old group for help. The old group said no. Enterprising souls in the new group sent off some of the mail to other facilities — 14 boxes to one facility alone — which sent it right back. They tried again, sending another 13 boxes. What happens when payment requests are ignored? Veterans can’t go to that outside provider and treatment is delayed or denied. Appeals can be denied if not received in time. Veterans with bad test results may not be notified. Within a short period of time after the report came out, the VA acted and got the backlog cleared up. The worrisome part of this is that with a coming consolidation of 82 claims processing groups at the VA, this can happen again if steps aren’t taken to ensure that mail is handled correctly. The Matrix Resurrections (R) — The fourth installment of The Matrix film franchise is available once again on streaming for those who missed its original premiere in December. Resurrections takes place 60 years after the last film, following the beloved duo of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (CarrieAnne Moss), whose memories, since their resurrections, have been suppressed. Outside of the Matrix, Bugs, captain of a hovercraft called the Mnemosyne, recognizes Neo in his suppressed form and is able to extract him from the Matrix’s grip, awakening his true memories and identity. Now, with the help of Bugs and her crew, Neo can help to free Trinity and once again overcome the mind-bending Matrix. Overall, this installment maintains the essence of the previous films while adding interesting new characters and plotlines, but it also has a lot of lighthearted, comedic moments that, at times, feel quite Marvelesque. (HBO Max) Eternals (PG-13) — Speaking of Marvel-esque! As the 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Eternals takes place in Phase Four of the MCU, after the Avengers succeeded in bringing back the missing half of the

population that Thanos snapped away. Because of the population’s return, the energy on Earth brought on an apocalyptic astronomical event called the emergence. The only ones with knowledge of it are 10 superheroes, the Eternals, who were brought to Earth in 5,000 B.C. to ensure that the emergence happens. After so many years on Earth that fostered a great love for humankind, the Eternals as a team now face great inner conflict about doing what’s right versus doing what they were told. Hopefully, they’ll prevail in time to save our planet! (Disney+) Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (R) — Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson) is a middle-aged widow who finally feels ready to take the leap and kickstart her love life, so she decides to hire a young sex worker named Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) to assist her. Nancy makes it clear to Leo beforehand that her late husband didn’t really take her pleasure into account during their marriage, so this is the time for her to ... take advantage and figure herself out. Described as a comedy-drama, this sex-positive film is a bit of an eccentric watch, but Thompson and McCormack are both so charming that you can’t go wrong. Now streaming on Hulu.

The Mystery of the Good Luck Owl Most Bingo players are great believers in luck. They have lucky chairs, they have lucky numbers, and most have a good luck charm of some sort. As I have told you before, mine is a small pewter dragon named Barney, who sometimes seems to help and sometimes just sits there, looking smug. Nan uses a small rubber ball, about an inch in diameter, which has been painted to look like an eyeball. She rolls it ceremoniously between her hands and then sets it to look in whatever direction will help her most. Sometimes she aims the eyeball at the caller to ensure that her numbers will be called. Sometimes she aims it at her cards, making sure the correct numbers are present. Sometimes she even eyeballs another player who, according to Nan, is winning too often. Frances carries a green troll

AUGUST 2022 named Fred whose tummy she rubs absentmindedly. The troll seems to do well as Frances wins more often than the rest of us. She named him after an old boyfriend who did not pan out as husband material but was lots of fun while the relationship lasted. Kathy has a little man on stilts who is a circus acrobat. He is perched on a small stand and can be removed for consultation. He can also be set to perform small acrobatics, such as flips, if the stilts are manipulated properly. His name is Armando Garcia Luis Ramon Montenegro although he does not look Castilian. I dump my little dragon in with my daubers, but Armando has a special carrying case to protect him from damage. He goes many places with Kathy as he is not just a Bingo good luck charm, but is used for job interviews, auditions and even times when she must find the exact article of clothing for a performance. Needless to say, Kathy is an actor. Jordan uses a small Kewpie Doll as his good luck piece. He got the doll on eBay and I think he paid an outrageous price, and just couldn’t bear to leave her sitting in a cupboard. Her name is Dolly and I think she must be good luck as Jordan wins pretty often. He lets others touch her tummy for luck if they need it. She comes with her own velvet carrying pouch. The best story I have of a good luck piece being used is Janine and her little brown owl, casually

called Hooty. One night when Janine was having terrible luck at Bingo, she brought the little owl’s body close to her nose and said, “Now you get busy and bring me some good luck! I’m tired of being on whenever someone else Bingos. It is my turn!” There was a small, clicking noise, so slight as to be easily ignored. “That’s Hooty’s fear-induced hiccups,” explained Janine. “He makes some odd noises when he gets started.” I could think of no reply to such an astonishing statement. Still, the noises did seem to be coming from Hooty. Janine was on early in the next game and I could hear the clicking coming from the tiny owl. “You get me G49. You hear me, owl? You bring me that number,” Janine hissed over and over. And sure enough, the next number was the one she wanted. Janine danced around her chair, proclaiming her win. She held Hooty in her hands and swung him up high. “You are such a good baby owl,” she said to the small object. “You can stop with the hiccups now.” She held the little owl close to my ear and, sure enough, the clicking was heard no more. Not wishing to perform investigative surgery on the clearly lucky charm, I decided it to see it as a Bingo miracle, and not the more likely result of toy mechanics gone awry. “Who” knows for certain the key to the mystery of the Good Luck Owl? Not I.

Love Those Daubers I have always thought that one of the really fun things about playing Bingo are daubers. We take them for granted, you know. Most daubers are all nearly the same size. There are, though, some that are much larger, and some are what you might call “tiny.” The ink used in the daubers is generally nonstaining and nontoxic. All this reminds me of a woman named Gloria whom I used to see at Bingo in Las Vegas. She had a

AUGUST 2022 special bag in which she brought her daubers. She must have had thirty or more of them. One night I noticed that some of her daubers had ink that looked really strange. I had never seen such odd colors. I eventually found out that she was actually mixing the inks. She had a small pair of pliers in her bag and would keep topping-off her daubers by filling some with others that were running out. Although her cards were daubed with some really odd colors, her system seemed to work well…until one night. While she had the tops off two of her daubers, someone came by and accidentally bumped into her chair. Suddenly, she had dauber ink all over her dress and the table and, worse still, she had it all over her hands and face and…her Bingo cards were TOTALLY covered. It took a good week for her to finally

and then went on as if nothing had happened. She was a real BINGO TROUPER. It is people like Gloria who provide the kind of memories that allow all of us to have wonderful stories to tell about the game we love the best. If you have a minute, take a deep breath and close your eyes and think of all the special people you have met over the years at Bingo. Sadly, many of them aren’t around anymore. But they entered our lives and made them better and more fun and gave us wonderful memories. My most vivid memory is of my Grandmother. She was my dad’s mother and the only grandparent I knew. The other three had died before I was born. It was she who brought me to Bingo back in 1957, back BEFORE daubers, when we marked our cards with kernels of corn. She had survived the Great Depression on a bottom-land farm in rural Indiana. She had raised four sons and seen them go on to better lives. She deserved a little rest and relaxation. Enforcing a Ridiculous Rule Hi Guy, I get that Bingo needs to have regulations because it counts as wagering, but I don’t see why regulations that are just as strict need to be enforced for the Bingo halls themselves. Two months ago, I ran into this regarding bringing food into a Bingo hall I play at. I already knew

AUGUST 2022 that they had a policy against players bringing in their own foods and beverages. But I am on a new diet and cannot eat the burgers and fries they sell. I brought in some fruit, and one of the workers spotted me removing the fruit from my backpack and placing it on the table. The worker came over and admonished me and told me to remove the food. I explained to her about the diet and that I don’t eat the kinds of foods they sell, and the worker said I should go to the kitchen and request that they sell fruit. Right then and there I got up from my seat and went to the kitchen and made my request that they provide fresh fruit. The woman at the counter said that they used to have fruit but that no one bought it, so they stopped having it. I told her of my conversation with the floor worker, and the woman said that the worker was correct. I again asked if they would provide

fruit in the future, and she said no. I responded that if they wouldn’t provide it, I should be able to bring my own—she said that I couldn’t and that it was against hall policy. She then turned and walked away from me. It seems to me that this is an unfair deal—I can’t bring fruit because of the no-food policy, but they will not provide fruit for me. The Worst Payoff Odds It seems obvious that a player should get paid 3-2 when they have an untied blackjack. I mean, that’s the way it has been in casinos for over fifty years. Bet $10 and get a blackjack, and if the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack, bingo, you are immediately paid $15. (That’s a 3-2 payoff or one and a half times your bet). Casino owners (way back when) initiated the bonus payoff for a blackjack to encourage players to try the game. The bonus payoff also helped to offset the big edge that the casino had over players when the rules of the game specify that a player must act on their hand before the dealer, and if they bust (i.e., hand exceeds 21), they will automatically lose even if the dealer subsequently busts. (Socalled “double bust” rule.) Nowadays, things have changed in casinos and that includes the 3-2 payoff for a blackjack. It’s quite common nowadays for casinos to pay only 7-6 or 6-5 or heaven forbid, only even money for a blackjack. Even if you never got a passing grade in basic math, you ought to be able to grasp the following logic as why 6-5 is not better than 3-2. A 3-2 payoff is the same as a 15-10 payoff. (I just multiplied the 3 and the 2 by 5.) Therefore, a 6-5 payoff is the same as a 12-10 payoff (this time I multiplied by 2). Now we have an apple to apples comparison between the two payoff odds. Do you agree that a 15-10 payoff is greater than a 12-10 payoff? Just suppose you bet $10 in a 6-5 game and got a blackjack. How much would you be paid? A 12-10 payoff (in the 6-5 game) would get you $12 (bet $10 and are paid $12, which is what 12-10 means). Get

AUGUST 2022 the same blackjack in a 3-2 game, and you’ll be paid $15 (that’s $3 more you’ll get in the 6-5 game). Now do you see that 6-5 is not a better payoff than 3-2? In fact, it’s a much lousier payoff. So, what’s the big deal over a measly $3 difference in blackjack payoffs between a 3-2 vs. 6-5 game? It so happens that statistically you can expect to get four blackjacks per hour when you play. Suppose you play a threehour session at a 6-5 blackjack game. That means you can expect to get 12 blackjacks. If you are short-changed three bucks for every blackjack, you will have donated a total of $36 to the casino coffers over the course of three hours. (If you are a $25 bettor, you’ll be giving them, gulp $180.) Trust me, blackjack is a tough game to beat even using the best strategies so don’t make it harder on yourself by playing 6-5 games. You can go through the same simple math to compare a 7-5 payoff to a 3-2 payoff, but I’ll spare you the trouble. Bottom line: For a $10 bettor, it will cost you an extra buck on every blackjack compared to a 3-2 payoff. That may not seem like much, but if you add up all the blackjacks you’ll get in your lifetime—that would amount to a lot of moola going to the casinos for no reason. Sorry, but a 7-5 payoff, although slightly better than 6-5, is still not good if you are serious about winning. And especially be wary of the “Party Pit,” where scantily clad ladies dance while you play blackjack. To pay for the entertainment, casinos have brazenly decreased the blackjack payoffs to, are you ready for this— even money. Listen up: if you think that this is free entertainment while you play, think again. For a $10 bettor, that even money payoff on every blackjack hand costs you to the tune of about $60 per hour for a $10 bettor. The bottom line is: before you plop yourself down at any blackjack table, make sure you look at the layout (or the placard that sits on the table) to be sure that the game you are about to play pays 3-2 for a blackjack. If it doesn’t, find another game (or casino) where they offer a much fairer 3-2 blackjack payoff. What's News in Nevada . . . Super Bingo Coming to the Plaza The Super Bingo tournament at the Plaza is a major event for bingo players from Toronto to Hawaii, typically drawing upwards of 1,000 people vying for the $50,000 super coverall and $160,000 in total prize money. The event will be held Sunday July 31 to Tuesday August 2 in downtown’s only bingo parlor. Bingo-only registration is $160 per person; the four-night bingo-hotel package is $300 (no resort fee). All Super Bingo players receive one 6-on paper pack for both days, two daubers, free drinks via an open bar at all sessions, two box lunches, and $10 in free slot play after the first day’s session. Jigsaw Puzzle Convention Apparently the “first-ever” event of its kind, the International Jigsaw Convention will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center July 8-10. The festivities will include a puzzle display, collaborative mural, puzzle exchange, kids’ playground, puzzle-completion lounge, various speed competitions with a grand prize of $10,000, and an “ultimate challenge” to set a new world’s record for the largest jigsaw. Going Commando Passwords are like underwear. We shouldn’t leave them out where others can see them, and for heaven’s sake, change them regularly. —Unknown I often think about the good old days. In my mind that was when our nation wasn’t in turmoil and the lazy days of summer meant just that. My brothers and I had a secret cave and trails that led to the swamp behind our home. We were forbidden to go there, but that never stopped us. Our house had no air conditioning so during hot afternoons we’d find a shady spot under a tree and read comic books. I relive those innocent times in my dreams until I awaken to realize that those are just sweet memories. Don’t get me wrong. I now have a wonderful life in which Robert and I travel a lot, gamble a lot, and play bingo frequently. We have love of family and friends, minus those who died too soon in our estimation. But still, those memories of days gone by come frequently and unbidden as I reflect on how time passes quickly. In the blink of an eye, I go from child to young adult to crazed old coot who begins her Bingo Bugle column with a reminder to enjoy your moments. Life is short. Now, on to other topics, like underwear! Underwear? Yes, because August 5th is National Underwear Day. This celebration promotes

wearing your underwear in public. Normally, I wouldn’t do it, but on August 5th, it’s encouraged. This day of flaunting your undies was started in 2003 by Freshpair, a men’s underwear/women’s apparel company. They did it for advertising purposes, but the idea caught on quickly. I try to imagine a room full of bingo players who are all exposing their underwear, but ack! It’s a scary thought, while at the same time so hilarious. As for me, after a few seconds considering it, rest assured that my granny panties will never see the light of day in public. Here’s a few fun facts about our underpants. Wearing no underwear is called going commando, but in Thailand this is illegal. The average American woman has more than 20 pairs of underwear, while about 10% of men have underwear that is older than a decade. Last, it’s considered lucky to wear red underwear on New Year’s Day. If that will summon Lady Luck, I will definitely do that, but you better believe it will be underneath my clothes. A few other holidays this month are August 7, National Friendship Day; August 9, National Book Lovers Day; August 10, National Lazy Day; and August 12, National Middle Child Day. I plan to celebrate all of these because I love books, my husband but not me says I tend to be lazy at times, and I am a middle child. As for Friendship Day, it’s a good day to enjoy bingo with all your friends. Enjoy the moments as I’ve already told you. Life is short. Until next month may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. Finally, another shout out to my local bingo, USEP, for posting my column on their bulletin board. USEP was founded in the 1970s to nurture Ohio’s children by developing financial and other resources to that end. Other bingos across the country do the same, so kudos to you all.

Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you.
