Janet hails from Caledonia and she’s played in Milwaukee, St. Francis and throughout the suburbs. But now she’s found her favourite place, Roma Lodge in Racine. Jim is an 18 year veteran of Bingo operations. He used to work with the late Russ Missurilli who managed their Bingo for 40 years.

The Arguments Continue!

Dear Readers: Letters continue to come in about arguments between players at Bingo, including some juicy ones not related to politics! Some examples follow. —Aunt Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo: While recent letters in your column have focused on people getting into political debates at Bingo, that is not the only topic that can get folks stirred up.

There was a shocker of an argument that happened where I play Bingo between two women who apparently live in the same senior complex and are both interested in the same man.

One of them kept insisting that this man was her boyfriend, while the other kept saying she was imagining things and that this man was interested in her.

Apparently these two had fought at the residence too and had been warned to stay away from each other or face a disciplinary hearing.

(Did you know they had hearings like that in senior complexes? It was news to me!)

These women had obeyed the residence warning but then found themselves at Bingo on the same night and immediately started to fight. I mean, it was LOUD! It was also quite a surprise because these women had to be in their 70s or older, but they sure had a lot of energy. One of them was actually screaming at the other and it really looked like it was going to get physical.

A couple of players got between them along with some of the workers, so it never got beyond shouting. The Bingo manager is a no-nonsense type and he threw them both out and banned them from coming back.

It was so crazy—and something those of us who witnessed it talked about for weeks!

APRIL 2019 Dear Lisa: Your email was the one that triggered my running one more column of letters about arguments at Bingo because, first, I got quite a few emails on the topic and second, I received two submissions on this same incident. The other letter was unsigned and included some details about shoving and possibly one woman spitting at the other, but otherwise it was obviously the same altercation—and clearly quite a show!

Seeing as some time has passed, I can’t help but be curious about how this situation resolved itself.

Have these women remained banned from Bingo? Did the man at the center of the controversy make a choice between the two feuding females? Did one of them run the other over with her car in the Bingo hall parking lot? Let us know! —Aunt Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo: I co-direct a Bingo hall and to be honest am typically too busy to take time to read your newspaper or write in to anyone about anything. But this topic of arguments at Bingo caught my attention because it happens more often than you would think and for all kinds of reasons.

I have broken up fights between: * A husband and wife over where to go to dinner after Bingo; * Two sisters over sharing Bingo winnings; * Two “friends” about local politics; * Two “friends” about national politics; * Two more “friends” over football; …and that’s just for starters.

Maybe it’s because of the tension of coming close to winning and being beaten by someone else, but there is something about the atmosphere in a Bingo hall that seems to foster arguments between Bingo buddies.

I don’t like it and have a strict “shut up or get out” policy that ends these arguments quickly. But some psychologist should check into this because it’s very weird.

Fake Blood Pressure Readings A Department of Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic in Virginia has been recording fake, incorrect blood pressure readings of veterans who came in for care.

A 139/89 reading was routinely entered during blood pressure rechecks. Why that number?

Because a higher number would have triggered follow-up care.

Once again, it was the VA’s Office of the Inspector General that caught the pattern. Eight weeks later, the OIG discovered that nothing had been done to correct the problem. They stepped in again and wrote five recommendations for improved care, and more than 800 veterans have been notified to return for blood pressure screenings.

It’s not the first time this has happened. Last fall it was a VA clinic in Kentucky, and the blood pressure reading was 128/78. In that case the OIG discovered that

by entering that particular reading, it would turn off the automatic note to physicians about whether or not the patient needed lab work, referrals or medication. It was a ploy to save work on the part of the medical staff. The OIG discovered, by calling veterans, that often no blood pressure reading had even been taken. What made it worse was that the fake readings triggered staff performance bonuses.

We need to step up and manage our health care. Take a pad and pen with you to appointments and take notes: your weight, any medications you’re to take, the results of any lab work ... and your blood pressure reading. Keep these notes in a file. Compare them to previous appointment notes. If you see a pattern -- in this case, if your blood pressure is the same from visit to visit -- ask questions.

Get a message to your doctor and let him know.

High blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and more. Take care of yourself.

Cecil and David Tennant as the cleric John Knox. The (slightly inaccurate, highly dramatized) historical lesson starts off slowly, but builds to some action in the second half. The period styling — dress, location — is stunning.

Ralph Breaks the Internet (PG) — John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman return as Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope Van Schweetz in Ralph Breaks the Internet, the Oscar-nominated animated sequel to the 2012 film about a bad guy with a heart of gold who showed a whole arcade that you don’t have to be who people say you are.

Flash-forward to now, the best friends must face an adventure through the Internet in order to find a part that will fix Vanellope’s game Sugar Rush. There are a crazy number of references in this movie, both overt and hidden. The DVD will keep you busy checking out the small stuff, while the story line, core players and cameos (original Disney princesses) are top-notch.

Mary Queen of Scots (R) — Saoirse Ronan takes a turn as the Scottish Queen Mary, detailing her tense power struggle with the English Queen Elizabeth, played deftly by Margot Robbie. As the two women manage their respective kingdoms, they are subject to the powerful influence of jealousy and competitiveness as well as the political machinations of the men at court. Guy Pearce also stars as royal adviser Sir William

The Possession of Hannah Grace (R) — Megan Reed (Shay Mitchell) takes a graveyard shift at the county hospital morgue as a part of her new life of sobriety.

It’s the perfect place for an ex-cop carrying a ton of guilt to get a little quiet time. Unfortunately for her, one of her first intakes is a corpse of an unknowingly slightly undead young woman (Kirby Johnson) who was picked up mid-ritual in an exorcism gone awry. As it’s explained, that demon has to go somewhere, so the possessed slowly awakens, each kill bringing her strength. Megan must fight both her inner demons and the literal creepy dead girl demon in a hospital that apparently cannot afford proper lighting.

Between Worlds (R) — Nicolas Cage is at his B-movie best as Joe, a down and out big-rig driver who lost his family in a tragic accident.

He forms a tenuous relationship with a psychic named Julie (Franka Potente), who is seeking the soul of her daughter Billie (Penelope Mitchell), near-drowned and lying comatose in a hospital bed. When her daughter wakes up, the result is not quite what she’d hoped — it’s not Billie in the body.

This supernatural thriller is for a very limited fan group — those who already have an established “crazy Nic Cage” drinking game.

Everyone else can skip it.

George’s Lucky Session George is absolutely adorable and he is crazy about Bingo. He is also a superb cook and does all the meal planning and cooking in his household, which is just he and his wife, Sandy.

Last Sunday he invited Kate and me over for dinner and Bingo to follow. We had a great meal of roasted, smoked pork, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables and salad and then all piled into his van to go to the Bingo hall.

When we got there, George pulled a bright yellow cross-eyed duck from a pocket and said it was his good luck charm. And good luck it proved to be. George was on right away and won the first game handily. He jumped up and danced a little jig of happiness.

APRIL 2019 Sandy is very quiet, as of course she would be, married to such a dynamo, but this time she spoke up. “Settle down, George,” she said. “You’ll wear yourself out or get us evicted from the games.”

“Okay, Honey,” said George.

“But I’m having such a great time, it’s hard to be still, and besides, who am I hurting?”

“Me,” said Sandy. “I can’t believe I came with such a goof.”

Now Kate got into it. “He’s not a goof,” said Kate. “He’s just having fun.”

Fortunately the next game kept us from continuing this chatter.

The next three games went by with no winners even near us, but when the next game arrived, George was really excited. He said he felt a win in his bones, and true to his word, he was quickly on.

The game dragged on but finally George won with two others to share the prize. The next game was the double box or double squares. They could be adjacent but not overlapping and is a pretty hard game to win. George loves it.

He is noisy by nature and makes all kind of noises whether he is winning or losing. He also bounces around while playing, leaving the rest of us wondering what he will do next.

At intermission he bought drinks for all of us, refusing to be reimbursed. “After all,” he said, “I won and you haven’t yet.”

When he won again, the worker said, “You again. When are you gonna give somebody else a chance?” Then they both laughed,

“He’s not a goof,”

feeling friendly.

George also has favorite sayings, which he blurts out regularly. “Oh, Baby,” is one of them, followed closely by, “Dammit, dammit, dammit, my fault.”

The next was a blackout with the big cross as an on-the-way game.

This time Kate was the excited one and was quickly on for the big cross. George demanded to know what number she needed and when she said G47, he began chanting it. He was so focused on her near win that he almost missed his own, and then he was very apologetic, seeming to think it his fault for winning.

“That’s Ok,” said Kate. “What would I have done with all that money anyway?”

“Spent it in riotous living, I hope” said George. “After all, what else is there in life?”

Unsolved mysteries of Jack & Jill It was one of those precious evenings when I had my first grandchild all to myself. We had done the Three Pigs, Three Bears and Georgie Porgy and Jack Be Nimble when all of the sudden little Stevie started asking questions, which is a sure sign of superior intelligence for a three year old.

“Grandma, I was wondering.

Why did Jack and Jill go up the hill?”

“Well there was well water up there, I guess they were thirsty.”

“We could give them some of ours,” he said, as he opened the fridge and pointed to our jug of ice water. I was so proud of his concern for others. The questions continued.

“Have I ever had plum pudding?”

“Grandma, are you afraid of spiders?”

“Why did Jack fall down, Grandma?”

“Did he trip on a stone?”

“What’s a crown grandma?”

To which I answered, “Maybe he was a prince, honey.”

It was all so cute, and Stevie was so inquisitive, that I shared it with my friends at Bingo last night. Bingo players always share the antics of their little ones. They also were very inquisitive and their comments forced me to take another look at the saga of Jack and Jill, which has been passed down for over a hundred years as a fine piece of early literature. Their questions were fast and furious.

“Where did this happen?”

“Who owned the property?”

“Did they file a lawsuit’?”

“Well Jack did break his crown.

I suppose he was royalty,” I responded.

“You can’t suppose anything, Bev. Your grandson needs facts on this story. Fairy tales need to be based on reality for kids these days.”

“For example, everyone knows you don’t drill a well at the top of a hill. Any kid can tell you that if you drill from low land you don’t have to drill so deep.”

I let it all pass. Three is too young and innocent for every little detail.

But a few weeks later Stevie and I were having a peanut butter sandwich one afternoon.

“Gram, I’ve been wondering about Jack and Jill,” he said.

“What were those teenagers doing on that hill at that hour of the night?”

BOB ON BINGO

By Bob Whittmore A Near-Miss For Old Bob

Since you and I got together the last time, Old “Bingo” Bob has suffered a mild heart attack. I bring this up, NOT to depress you or deviate from talking about Bingo, but I wanted to take a second to tell you that it can happen to anyone…at any time.

My attack didn’t have me writhing in pain. The symptoms i n c l u d e d e x t r e m e shortness of breath. I ignored the discomfort for nearly three days before I decided to go to the emergency room. That was a mistake. I AM better, but still short of breath. I have been told that my attack damaged one of the valves of my heart and that I need to drop some weight and take it easy. Currently, just walking from my apartment to the car to go to Bingo takes the wind out of my sails.

So, I don’t want to sound like a medical crusader, but I want to take just a few more lines to tell you what I have learned about doing the things we all should be doing to prevent a heart attack: First: Stop smoking. I am eternally grateful that I never smoked. Therefore, I am asking all Bingo halls that have NONSMOKING sections to check the

airflow and the ventilation systems in their hall. I know of at least one Bingo hall in Las Vegas where the smoke from the SMOKING section actually is sucked into the NONSMOKING section by the A-C system.

Secondly: Watch what you eat.

Start adding plenty of fruits and veggies, grains, and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as tuna and other fish, to your diet.

Cut down on salt, saturated fats, sweets, and red meats.

Thirdly: Take it easy. Take up yoga or another form of meditation.

Stop and smell the roses. Makes sure that YOU have some private time.

Life is too short to waste it.

Enough said.

Now, as you say, many Bingo halls are turning into libraries.”

I couldn’t tell you the last time I saw a suggestion box. And if you think about it, that’s pretty strange. When did businesses and organizations stop being interested in input that could make their operations better? Is it like the Bingo worker said? People in charge hate suggestions?

After that, little else was said about the suggestion box. Over the next few months it was moved to places of less and less prominence, until finally it disappeared— which I’m sure was at someone’s anonymous suggestion.

Keep in mind, though, that while the physical suggestion box may have faded into history, it still is very much alive in the virtual world of email and toll free 800 numbers.

Email can be sent with much the same anonymity as the suggestion box once promised; all you need is the recipient’s address.

My suggestion is to poke around a little until you find an email address for the Bingo hall you attend and fire off a brief but constructive message with your observations. Scouting the blackjack tables I’m amazed at how many players I see enter a casino and plop themselves down at the first empty seat at any blackjack table. What they should be doing instead is scouting the blackjack tables. The reason is the blackjack playing rules, the number of decks of cards, the payoffs for a blackjack, the table limits, and even how the dealer shuffles the cards, are not always the same from one table to the next. What follows are some tips on what you should be looking for when you scout the tables so that you can play the best blackjack game available in whichever casino you visit.

6-5 payoff for blackjack Always make sure that the table pays 3-2 for a blackjack, not 6-5 (or worse, even money). In some casinos, the cloth layout will specify if blackjack pays 3-2 or 6-5 or there may be signage on the table that specifies what the payoff is. Here is something to keep in mind: You do NOT want to play any blackjack game, even a singledeck game, if a blackjack pays 6-5.

(Reason: The house edge increases by 1.4% when the casino pays 6-5 instead of 3-2. This is a rip-off and you should avoid playing all 6-5 games.) If you are not sure what the payoff is for a blackjack, ask the dealer before you sit down and play.

However, on some tables, the rules may specify that the dealer must hit soft 17, and on other tables, stand on soft 17. You are better off (by roughly 0.2%) playing on a table where the

APRIL 2019 dealer stands on soft 17 (rather than hit). Check the layout or table signage for the soft 17 rule and if you have a choice, play on a table where the dealer stands on soft 17. (Again, if you are not sure if the rule is stand or hit soft 17, ask the dealer.)

Continuous Shuffling Machine In the old days, the dealer hand shuffled the cards, or automatic shufflers would shuffle multiple decks of cards after the dealer dealt roughly 70% of them. Nowadays many casinos have reverted to Continuous Shuffling Machines (CSM).

The CSM is a combination auto shuffler and dealing device. After every round (or sometimes two), the dealer will place the discards back into the CSM where they will be automatically shuffled with the unplayed cards in the CSM (usually a CSM holds four to six decks of cards). You can tell if a table is using a CSM by watching what the dealer does with the discards after each round. If she isn’t stacking them in the discard tray, she probably is placing them into the CSM. And that’s not good for players. Why? Because when a casino uses a CSM, there is never a pause in the action and, therefore, the casino can deal roughly 20% more hands per hour. That increases the number of hands that a player’s bankroll is exposed to the house edge. It is better to avoid all CSMs and instead play on tables where the dealer manually shuffles the cards, or uses a traditional auto shuffler that shuffles all the cards.

Betting Limits If you are a low roller, you shouldn’t be betting $25 a hand.

Every table has a sign that specifies what the table minimum and maximum betting limits are.

Therefore, check out the tables to find betting limits you feel comfortable playing. If all the lowlimit tables are crowded, it is best to wait until a seat opens rather than take a seat at a $25 minimum table.

Number of Decks In general, the fewer the number of decks of cards, the better the game is for players. However, you have to check all the rules. For example, a single-deck game that pays 6-5 for a blackjack is a terrible game, whereas if it paid 3-2 for a blackjack, it’s a very good game.

being allowed to re-split pairs, being allowed to surrender your hand, and, of course, the dealer standing, rather than hitting, soft 17.

What's News in Nevada . . .

ROCK GROUP IN RESIDENCE Although the gig is only scheduled to last for nine shows, Steely Dan is slated to be in what is being called a “mini-residency” at the Venetian Theater in Las Vegas. Even though the group’s co-founder, Walter Becker, died several years ago, the group is still going strong. Tickets for the April-May performances range from $142 to $321. The dates are from April 25th through May 11th.

NOT SO SUPER BOWL The recent Super Bowl may have been a TV ratings and on-thefield disaster. So are the numbers coming from gaming regulators.

According to the bean counters, gamblers in Nevada bet a lot less on this year’s game. When all the numbers are in, the totals will likely show that about $13-million LESS was bet this time around than last year. Nevada has over 200 sportsbook locations. It should be pointed out, though, that this was the first Super Bowl on which fans in other states could legally place bets.

SKYWALK AT THE ‘STRAT’ There are published reports that the soaring Stratosphere in Las Vegas has filed for a permit to build a new attraction atop the 1,149-foot tall hotel/casino. The new attraction will be a skywalk, similar to the one built by the Hualapai Tribe at the Grand Canyon. The permit seems to indicate that the skywalk will afford incredible-but-scary views of Las Vegas through a glass floor that will hang out from the tower.

By the way, the Stratosphere has

changed its name to simply The Strat.

HIDEAWAY AT THE PALMS According to at least one media report, the Las Vegas attraction The Palms has a new cozy meeting place. It’s tucked away on the third floor of the Fantasy Tower. The “hideaway” is an upscale piano bar called Mr. Coco. It describes the fare as being “trendy” and served on small plates. The menu includes caviar and was created by chef Steve Benjamin. The dresscode includes a prohibition on swimwear, athletic gear, muscle shirts, shorts, flip-flops and baseball caps.

NATIVE BORN NEVADANS New national statistics show that Nevada has the smallest percentage of people born within the state of any in the union. Only about 26% of the citizens of the Silver State were born in Nevada.

One reason for the numbers is that for the past few years, Nevada has been the fastest-growing state in the Union. By the way, most of the people who left Nevada in the last decade moved to California.

SNOW BUSINESS The winter snows may have caused a lot of smiles in the Reno/ Tahoe ski areas, but in some cases the snows have been so heavy that they caused damage. For example, in early February, the Donner Pass area got more than four feet of fresh white stuff during just one weekend. There was extensive damage to the trees in the region.

Lucky Balls and Snow Birds Robert and I spent the winter in Bullhead City, Arizona. Oh, the joy of being retired and able to relocate to a no snow zone for three months. Well, almost a no snow zone. Several years ago, we arrived in Bullhead the day before New Year’s Eve and awoke the next morning to find it was snowing!

It hadn’t snowed in Bullhead for years, as this is a desert area south of Las Vegas. The citizens were over joyed as some of the kids had never seen the white stuff. We snowbirds, as winter visitors to Bullhead are called, were astounded also. We were looking forward to sunshine and warm temps and found our cars covered in snow. Mother Nature showed us who was boss lady that year.

While in Bullhead, we play bingo at four nearby casinos…Avi, Lodge, Tropicana, and Riverside.

They are a short drive across the nearby bridge to Laughlin, Nevada.

The lovely ladies at the Tropicana know us now and aggravate the heck out of my husband. Imagine that; not that he doesn’t deserve everything they dish out. On Tuesday and Wednesday at the Trop, besides the regular lucky ball, the games include a lava ball.

A bingo on the lava ball is worth a thousand dollars. We keep trying.

We also keep an eye on the lucky cash balls at the Station casinos in Vegas, about an hour and a half away. The drive to get there winds

through mountains and desert scenery, plus, we always stop at Railroad Pass Casino. The Pass is an older smaller casino, but we like the atmosphere and their inexpensive food that includes luscious strawberry shortcake.

The various Station casino lucky balls are often at ten thousand dollars and higher. The first game played at each is a video linked Jumbo Coverall. If anyone hits the jumbo jackpot, then the rest of the games that session pay a thousand dollars each. To win you must bingo at 48 numbers or less, but that number increases each week to a max of 53 numbers with a hundred thousand dollars or more for the overall payout. One sunny morning Robert and I decided to try our luck at Green Valley Ranch as the cash ball there was $110,000 plus. That’s right…$110,000 plus.

I knew it would be crowded and wanted to get there super early.

Robert thought it would be sufficient if we got there an hour beforehand.

Well, we did that and arrived to find the line of players out the door with the entire bingo lobby area packed. We had no hope of getting inside, so we left and drove to Sunset Station nearby. The cash ball there was a mere eleven thousand and there were plenty of seats. Good thing we switched casinos because woo, woo. We hit the cash ball! No, we didn’t. April Fool! We didn’t win a darn thing because it was another lucky player’s turn to yell bingo on the cash ball. Oh well.

Hope springs eternal and we will patiently wait until it’s our turn to hit it big. April Fool again! Patience is not something we practice. LOL. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big.

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you.
