We visited the Elks Club #400 in Waukesha at 2301 Springdale Rd. to meet up with this month’s winner. Yes, the headline is 100% true, our Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes Winner surely does love Bingo. She doesn’t care if she wins or not, she loves to play Bingo. This month’s Winner, Jean Cochenet had a lot to tell us about her Bingo experience. She said, “I’ve made many friends at Bingo and I love playing Bingo with all of them, especially my 2 Bingo Besties Gloria and Darlene.“ Bingo is a special activity for Jean as it is for many people. Jean worked in the Home Heathcare Field taking care of people in their own homes. She really loved the work and loved helping people. At times she assisted as many as 4 people at one time. Jean worked in that capacity until she retire at age 80. Everyone needs a way to relax after a day’s work, she’s no different. Jean sums it up this way, “Bingo is Relaxing”. Our winner enjoys the occasional casino trip too. A while back, while visiting in Minnesota she played in a Bingo Bonanza and won. As relaxing as she finds Bingo, that was relaxing and exciting at the very same time. Jean is a “People Person”. She is an Avon Representative and has sold Avon Products for 40 years. With her pleasant personality it stands to reason that she has had a successful Avon career. We learned a little about her life and her appreciation of family, friends and

Waukesha Elks #400 Bingo. Jean told us, “I live with my daughter now and I just love it. My daughter Jodi is the most wonderful daughter anyone could ever have. She is great, there are not enough words to discribe her qualities or how much I love her.” This was a most heartfelt expressions of love and gratitude we have heard in our years of Bingo Bugle reporting. Jean gave us a snapshot into what Bingo players can expect from Elks #400 Bingo. “Waukesha Elks #400 Bingo is a fantastic place to play Bingo. The food is great and Ben, the man who runs it does a fine job. Everyone is so friendly and helpful to one another. Sometimes my friend Gloria even bakes cakes and brings them to Bingo. I’ve met many lasting friends through Bingo. Bingo is so exciting - If I ever hit a Big Jackpot I’d have trouble getting off my chair!” Wow. In the midst of delivering food for the players, Jill Gorski took time out to talk to us.
Now Jill is Leading Knight at Elks #400 and in September she takes over as the first female Exaulted Ruler of the lodge. That is exciting. She wanted us to know that Waukesha Elks #400 Lodge loves hosting Bingo on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Jill is happy to report that the attendance numbers are slowly going up after the easing of Covid restrictions. She said, “We want everyone to know that our full service bar is open and serving during Bingo and our kitchen is fantastic, all the food is cooked to order. Kudos to our great volunteers, the backbone of our operation. It requires as many as 20 volunteers to insure that our players are properly served. We really appreciate our loyal Bingo Players. Our players make our charity efforts possible. We devote our energy to provide scholarships and our programs to honor our veterans.” Their ad is on Page 7 of this Bingo Bugle Newspaper so play at Waukesha Elks.
It’s official, our good friends at American Legion Post #1 will resume Bingo activities on August 12, 2021. Germantown American Legion Post #1 is located at N120 W15932 Freistadt Rd. Germantown, Phone (262) 2515470. Post #1 is prepared to pick up where they left off and provide great Bingo in Washington County. The doors will open at 5:00 PM, Early Bird Bingo at 7:00 PM and Regular Session at 8:15 PM EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT. $2,000 in Bingo prize money plus PROGRESSIVE BINGO and a $1,000 Raffle the Last Thursday of the month. Cover Up for the Coverall? Dear Aunt Bingo, With the weather at its warmest this time of year I can understand why Bingo players want to dress comfortably in light blouses and shorts and sandals when they come to Bingo. But considering that two of the halls I play at are church Bingos, I have to say I have been very shocked on a number of occasions by the revealing clothing some female players have been wearing. Several not-so-young women have shown up at Bingo with shorts and skirts that are so short they might as well have come in their underwear. But that is nothing compared to the ones who arrive bra-less with tops that leave very little to the imagination. Bingo may not be the same as a religious service, but it is still held at a church! It seems to me that a

Head to the grocery store, fastfood restaurant or just walk on the street and you will see more skin exposed in more revealing outfits than ever before. I’m torn on this topic. I understand your desire for proper decorum, but we are talking about the human body. It’s beautiful, it’s natural, it’s made in God’s image and likeness. When did we decide it was shameful and needed to be strapped in and covered up? (Oh, yeah…when God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden!) In the end, I think this is a matter of to each her own. If these ladies come to Bingo dressed this way and are comfortable with it, who are we to judge? Light clothing is keeping them cool and relaxed— and sharp for Bingo. Perhaps it is their secret weapon. —Aunt Bingo

Volunteering at the VA
The Department of Veterans Affairs just celebrated its 75th year of using volunteers to run programs for veterans. Last year alone, 46,000 volunteers worked 4.4 million service hours and gave $108 million worth of gifts and donations. That’s huge, and it’s a credit to all those volunteers that they found ways to support veterans despite COVID and all the restrictions it brought to our lives. We can make this year even better. Go to Voluntary Services at www. volunteer.va.gov and see how you can help. On the left side look at Volunteer or Donate Now. Pick your state and the facility you want to support. If you want to donate money, you can do that online with a credit card. Be sure to identify the facility you’d like the money to go to. If you want to volunteer in person, select the facility and check the list

If the facility has a hospice unit, look at the list and consider the families that are staying there. If you’re a member of a service organization such as the American Legion and want to make a group donation, look at the list of wish items they need. Right now at my medical facility, they’re looking for store gift cards, sneakers, underwear, canteen coupon books and gas cards. Other facility lists are more specific, down to the actual size of pants and shoes that are needed or the type of paperback books that are preferred. If there is a large homeless population in your area, facilities often try to put together care packages for those veterans or apartment start-up kits for those moving into housing. Call the Voluntary Services department at a facility near you and ask how you can help.

PICKS OF THE MONTH In the Heights (PG-13) — If you pick just one movie to see in 2021, this much-anticipated musical is THE highlight of summer films. Its high-energy music-and-dance numbers tell stories of love, family, community and dreams in the predominantly Dominican New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights. With music and lyrics written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (of Hamilton fame), every number is impassioned and exuberant. Brooklyn native and Broadway star Anthony Ramos is dreamy in the lead role of Usnavi, but the real delight of this movie is the relatability of the stories across cultures. This is a new generation of musical, and it is spectacular. (Theaters and HBO Max) Good on Paper (R) — For those who like best-friend shenanigans, Good on Paper is a familiar story that speaks to any woman who’s ever second-guessed a new love interest. Main character Andrea Singer, played by comedian and writer Iliza Schlesinger, meets a nice, smart, charming, nerdy guy,
Dennis. They date. He says the right things. He’s funny. Seems nice. Something must be wrong with him, right? Enter Andrea’s best friend Margot — the always perfect Margaret Cho -- who plants the seeds of doubt and then helps investigate who Dennis really is. Ryan Hansen smoothly portrays the boyfriend in question, keeping audiences guessing if he is legit or just another smooth talker. (Netflix) Rebel Hearts (NR) — This 2021 Sundance Film Festival documentary tells the story of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Labeled “blasphemous” and “uppity,” these nuns chose to become unlikely social activists pushing for equality and modernism within an organization based on antiquated, sexist norms. Attending freedom marches and placing themselves in harm’s way for justice, they ignite much criticism from the church and risk their own livelihoods in the process. But their continued legacy of selfless servitude is inspiring to both Catholics and non-religious viewers alike. (Theaters and discovery+)

Newbie Nerves Kim is a fiendish Bingo player who doesn’t have a good time unless she wins at least once, preferably several times. She brought her new daughter-in-law to the Saturday night game with her and we got to meet her for the first time. Eileen was very shy and seemed too young to be married and she was having her first introduction to Bingo. We shared a table, and I tried to befriend Eileen to make her more comfortable. Kate took on Kim and distracted her as much as possible. Eileen confided that she really wanted to please her new motherin-law but was at a loss as to how best to do that. Kim seemed to expect something of her, but she didn’t know what. “I think she expects me to know

AUGUST 2021 all about Bingo,” she whispered. “But I’ve never played before. How can I fake it?” “I’ll help,” I promised. “Just follow my lead.” We got through the warm-ups with Kim announcing when she was on or even just close. She was certainly a noisy person—no wonder Eileen was intimidated. When we got to the mid-way blackout, I noticed Eileen had a really good card, but didn’t say anything for fear of spooking her. I tried to keep an eye on her card without letting her know I was watching her. When I could stand it no longer, I hissed, “Look, Eileen, you’re on!” She said nothing at all. At last somebody called a Bingo. Eileen nudged Kim and whispered, “I’ve got one, too.” “What?” yelled Kim. “Well, call Bingo.” Eileen just shook her head and said nothing. She sat nestled under Kim’s arm as if seeking and fearing protection. “Yell Bingo,” commanded Kim. Eileen said nothing. “Oh, for heaven’s sake,” said Kim exasperated. “BINGO! We have a Bingo over here.” “Sorry, too late,” said the caller. “I’ve already closed the game.” “You can’t,” said Kim. “She had it, but she didn’t get the word out. She’s a new player. You’ve got to let her have her Bingo. I insist!” But insisting with this caller got Kim nowhere. She finally gave up in defeat, and was angry with
Eileen for losing the win. I was ready to give her the money to shut her up. Again, in the Bonanza game, Eileen was on. I kept my eye on her card and was ready to nudge her to life when her number came up in the screen. “Oh,” yelled Eileen. “I have a-a-a KIM!” The caller looked at her patiently. “Do you mean you have a Bingo?” she asked. Eileen nodded, too embarrassed to speak. “It’s a simple word. Try it. Bingo!” But Eileen could not get the word out. “Okay, just for you, we’ll call it a Kimbo.”

Play as You Travel First of all, thanks to my sister Diane for writing last month’s column. She has always been a great contributor to this column (for 20 years) but I never really gave her much credit. She loves Bingo as much as I do. So, again, Diane, thanks and I’ll let you do it again, sometime. Now, down to this month’s column. Although summer is drawing to a close, I know that a lot of my fellow “older Americans” like to travel in the fall when the kids have gone back to school and the crowds have died down. And, as we slowly come out from under the cloud of Covid, things ARE loosening up. Every year I remind my readers that it is sometimes fun to play Bingo as you travel across the country. The thing to do is to get an old-fashioned HIGHWAY MAP. Remember MAPS? You unfold them and can’t get them folded back up again! Well, take a map
and plot out the route you will be traveling. Just for fun, let’s pretend we live in Portland, Oregon. We are going to visit relatives in Roswell, New Mexico. (Which is said to be a rather “Out of This World” kind of place). According to the Internet, it’s about 1,600 miles from Portland to Roswell. Younger drivers could make it all the way in three long days of driving. But, trust me, my back couldn’t do that anymore. So, I’m breaking up the trip into four days on the road. The stops would be: Boise, Idaho; Salt Lake City, Utah; Cortez, Colorado and then Roswell. Before making motel reservations, I would then go to any search engine on the Internet (such as Yahoo or Google) and type in: “Boise Idaho Bingo.” I would substitute Cortez into the other searches (gambling is not legal in Utah). After finding where you can play Bingo and on what nights, then try to coordinate your travel dates and the location of the motels with your Bingo choices. I can tell you that some of the best sessions of Bingo I have ever attended have been while on the road. I constantly talk about a Bingo hall near the New Orleans Airport. I loved it, especially the Cajun food. Additionally, you might not find

Q: I have an opportunity to adopt a wonderful three-legged, overweight, 4-year-old Shepherd. I’m happy to help him lose the weight, as I already walk 2 to 4 miles almost every day. However, I’m not sure if he can walk those distances. Can he be trained to walk with me that far? Your potential new family member may be able to train up to walking a couple of miles, eventually. He’s young enough, and Shepherds are certainly energetic enough. His extra weight will make it difficult to manage on three legs. You can best control his weight through a diet prescribed by a
veterinarian, rather than relying on exercise alone. Don’t just cut calories without guidance, as he will need to eat good-quality food to put on muscle and get strong enough to walk with you. Swimming, if he is comfortable doing it, can be a great option to keep him exercising while putting much less stress on his joints. Introduce him to this activity gradually, and don’t force him into the water. Some dogs leap right in (I’m lookin’ at you, Labradors), while others are hesitant. If you’re still on the fence about adopting this wonderful boy, talk to a veterinarian to find out what challenges you will face in getting him to a healthy weight. Bingo Drama Hi Guy, I make it a point to get to Bingo early for all the obvious reasons… to get my paper before there’s a long line, to get a seat at a table I want, and to have time to spread out and set up my drink, my lucky doodads, and get my Bingo paper laid out. The last time I was at Bingo it was a busy night and the hall was crowded, which again made me glad I had gotten there early to set up. As it got closer and closer to the start of the games, people were still arriving and rushing around to find seats. My table filled up fast, and the only chair left was next to me. That is when a rather large, loud woman came charging into the hall shouting, “Oh dear, don’t start, don’t start, wait for me…” and made her way through the hall to buy her Bingo paper. She then began walking through the hall, pushing through the aisles looking for a seat. Lucky me, she saw the chair next
AUGUST 2021 to me and bolted for it. When she reached the table, she dumped all her Bingo junk with a thud, bumped me and the woman on the other side of her several times, then plopped her big butt into the chair. Right then the caller turned on the Bingo machine and began making announcements. “Oh no, oh no, I’m not ready!” the woman shouted, and she began flailing her Bingo paper around and digging into her bag for daubers. I finally got sick of her antics and spoke up. “Do you mind?” I asked her. “We were all here on time and are ready to play and really don’t appreciate this scene you’re making.” The obnoxious woman went nuts. “How dare you speak to me like that!” she said. “I have just as much right to be here as you!” She then began flailing around again, this time even more, until she found a dauber. She then banged her Bingo bag on the table and spread her Bingo paper across the table, making sure it overlapped my paper as well as the paper of the player across from her and the woman next to her. I shoved her paper back at her and told her to keep it off my paper. (I admit this was not the smartest move.) The woman threw a fit, shouting at me for “harassing” her and calling for the manager. The start of the games was brought to a stop and a couple of volunteers and the Bingo manager came to our table to find out what the problem was.

The woman was practically spitting as she ranted about how the players at her table were giving her trouble and that the workers needed to do something about it. After what seemed like a very long time, they found another place for her and invited her to move there. “I’m not moving!” she snapped. “Move HIM!” She of course was pointing and glaring at me. At first, I was embarrassed, but then I realized that moving was better than sitting next to this obnoxious cow for two hours. “My pleasure,” I said as I stood up and casually gathered up my belongings and moved to my new seat. I am still astonished when I think of all the drama this woman caused, right up to the point of holding several hundred people hostage by delaying the games for almost half an hour. I get angry every time I think of it. I haven’t been back to that hall since that night. And to add insult to injury, the obnoxious woman won a $500 jackpot. —DD, California, via email Hi DD, What a nightmare. You do everything right in order to prepare for a pleasant evening of Bingo, then a diva shows up and spoils everything. To be honest, however, if you look back at how the incident evolved, the trigger moment was not when this woman showed up at

your table, but when you scolded her for her tardiness. Up to that point, she was just a silly woman enjoying her selfinduced dramatic moment. Had you stayed silent, she would likely have settled down and Bingo would have proceeded without incident. But because you chose to admonish her, you fueled her fire, empowering her to create an even bigger scene—which is just what this type of person lives for. I would like to know if other readers agree with me. Did DD in fact trigger the woman’s outburst? Or am I being unfair by blaming him for this woman’s behavior? To Switch or Not to Switch? One of the most controversial topics amongst video poker players is changing machines. I’m going to throw my two cents into this issue and share with you a slightly different perspective from Frank Kneeland, who is the author of the book The Secret World of Video Poker Progressives. Many video poker players will change machines when they are losing. They believe that their machine is “cold” and by switching to another machine, they, hopefully, will land on a “hot machine.” Here’s my two cents on switching machines. There are some perfectly good reasons for switching but doing it “to change your luck” isn’t one of them. The cards on a video poker machine are selected randomly. The cards don’t know (and don’t care) whether you are on a cold (or hot) streak. Therefore, from a strictly mathematical viewpoint, changing machines from a game you are currently playing to another machine to play the same game with the same pay table isn’t a guarantee that your luck will change. You will get, most likely, different results in the short term on your new machine, but you don’t know beforehand whether it will be better or worse. However, there are some other reasons why you might consider switching machines. They include a “sticking” button on the machine, a blurry screen, cold air blowing
AUGUST 2021 on you from an overhead air conditioner vent, smoke being blown in your direction from a smoker, or having an “overly chatty” player next to you. However, the bottom line is this: If the expected return (ER) for the game you are playing on machine A is the same as machine B, from a mathematical viewpoint, it doesn’t make any difference which machine you play. I often add this caveat: If you don’t have an expected return (ER) over 100%, changing machines could lower your hourly loss because it will decrease the number of hands you play per hour (this assumes you would hop around from one machine to another several times during a session). In addition, by pausing from the action and giving your brain a rest when you switch machines, it could help you avoid making playing mistakes, which often occurs when playing video poker machines non-stop for long periods. As you can see, I take a rather hardline, scientific view on the topic of switching machines. (I am a trained scientist, after all.) Enter Frank Kneeland, who wrote an article about changing machines as a strategy in Blackjack Insider titled The Lucky Underwear Phenomena. I’ve summarized below what he had to say on this topic. When a player is sure he will do better after changing machines, they really have no data to compare with simply because they can’t clone themselves and continue playing on the first machine, and then compare the results with the second machine. If a player happens to get “better” results after changing machines, he will point to this fact as proof that changing machines makes a difference. This is a natural human tendency to overrate how much control a player thinks he has over an event, such as the output of the results of the random number generator (RNG) in a video poker machine (this is known in psychological circles as Illusionary Control). Toss in Hindsight Bias, which is the tendency to see past events as more predictable than they

really were, and you have a nearly complete picture of why players, in retrospect, believe changing machines is anything other than a waste of time. The common advice to players goes something like this: “It doesn’t matter if you change machines or not, because the machines each hand is a random and independent event. Furthermore, it is neither good nor bad, so do it if you like.” I disagree for this reason. According to Dr. William G. McCown, who is the author of a book on gambling psychology, cognitive distortions are a risk factor for problem gambling. Therefore, knowing this, there is simply no reason to tempt fate. Our less-than-perfect human minds are primed to look for patterns. Suppose instead

Some of your underwear will result in a “hot session” while other result in a “cold session.” You might start favoring your “lucky” underwear when you play video poker. I hope you realize that your choice of underwear doesn’t affect what hands you are dealt or what draw cards you get when you play video poker. Neither does changing machines. So, there you have two views on changing machines with a similar recommendation: Changing machines as a playing strategy won’t work in the long run. Skyline Shrimp Cocktail is Back The Skyline’s best-in-town shrimp cocktail was put on ice during the pandemic, but it’s back and it’s one of the few deals that has returned better than it was. Served 24/7 at the bar and in the restaurant, the price has been dropped from $2.25 to $1.50. That’s a pretty big deal, but the cocktail is also better than it was. Previously patterned after the Golden Gate’s famous shrimp cocktail—a Fisherman’s Wharf-style with baby shrimp—the new version has medium-sized shrimp with the tails on. There were ten in our serving, filling up the plastic tulip glass with almost no filler at the bottom. It’s served with cocktail sauce on the side and crackers (ask the bartender for a lemon). Grab a Bud for $3.50 or get it comped while playing some quarter 9/6 Jacks or Better at the bar. iHeart Festival Lineup Announced The iHeart Radio Music Festival will be held at T-Mobile Arena on September 17 and 18. And with headliners like Coldplay, Maroon 5, Cheap Trick, Journey, and Florida Georgia Line, the event should be rockin’. Also appearing on the main nighttime stage will be Dua Lipa, Billie Ellish, Khalid, Lil Baby, Nelly, Sam Hunt and Weezer. In addition, a daytime stage, on the grounds of Area15, will host Olivia Rodrigo, Russell Dickerson, Saweetie, and Gabby Barrett. Ryan Seacrest will emcee the festival and iHeartMedia stations will simulcast the headliners on both nights. Cannabis Lounges Legalized Governor Steve Sisolak has signed a bill that authorizes the Cannabis Compliance Board to license and
regulate cannabis consumption lounges throughout the state. Two types of lounges were approved: attached or directly adjacent to an existing dispensary; and separate and independent. Twenty licenses will be issued after the new law goes into effect on October 1; it could take another month or two after that for the first lounges to open. Cirque Returns Cirque du Soleil’s first Las Vegas show since the pandemic, Mystère, opened late June at Treasure Island. Mystère was the Cirque’s first show in Las Vegas, debuting with Treasure Island in 1993. O reopened at Bellagio shortly after; and will be followed by Michael Jackson One at Mandalay Bay on August 19 and Love at the Mirage a week later. All of Cirque’s shows will reportedly return “by the fall.” Tickets for Mystère start at $75 for shows nightly at 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 9:30 p.m. as well. MGM Goes Solar MGM Resorts International actuated a 100-megawatt solar array that will power as much as 90% of the electrical needs for the company’s 13 Las Vegas hotel-resorts in early summer. The Mega Solar Array, located on 640 acres northeast of Las Vegas near the I-15/US 93 interchange, consists of 323,000 solar panels and generates enough electricity to sustain 27,000 houses. First, Last, Middle We all grow old, but siblings know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts, jokes, secrets, griefs, and joys. We live outside the touch of time. — Unknown I adore my two brothers. I’m the middle child and only daughter whose parents loved her the most. Oops! My brothers disagree, but I’m convinced I was indeed the beloved one. Some research shows that certain personality traits are associated with one’s birth order. First born are leaders and protective of others. My older brother, David, led me into trouble many times as he talked us into exploring the swamp behind our home. Off limits said our parents. Follow me said David and that’s exactly what my brother and I did. Swing on grapevines over the swampy water, sure. Build a fire in our secret cave, okay. Jump out of a barn loft and almost break my ankle? That was me following David who jumped first. However, this was the same brother who helped a tiny first grader, me, climb on the school bus. He also gave me lunch money numerous times when I forgot mine. Did I mention I adore him? Then, there is Richard, my younger brother and baby of the family. Last born children are outgoing and attention seekers, but also charming in an evil way. That describes him perfectly as he certainly gathered attention when he chased butterflies behind our farmhouse or hunted bumblebees with his BB gun. AUGUST 2021 first, and then gleefully revealed the endings. Did I mention I adore him? Middle children are supposed to be better adjusted, more competitive, people pleasers, and peacemakers. You would have to ask my family and friends as to the truth of that because, in my mind, I do have all those traits. I want to win in all competitions; make people around me happy; and settle all disputes so that everyone gets along. Middle children are quickly becoming extinct though, as most modern women have two children or fewer. August 12 is National Middle Child Day. I plan to call my brothers and remind them I’m special. They will laugh and remind me I can get lost in a paper bag, can’t remember squat, and take frequent naps. They’re just jealous because our parents loved me more. Recently, my husband and I were in Vegas/Laughlin. For the most part we were mask-less as we’ve been vaccinated. On the plane we were told to wear masks or else wave goodbye in the terminal while the other passengers flew away. We did not argue. It was 112 in Laughlin but cool to the point of chilly inside the casinos. In downtown Vegas, it was so cold playing slots inside casinos I bought a jacket to wear over my two blouses and a sweater. I received strange looks when I ventured onto Fremont Street dressed like a little old Eskimo looking for an igloo. While downtown we enjoyed playing Bingo at the Plaza. The workers (Allyce, Kimmy, Haku, Larry, Weldon) are so nice, except Kimmy. Robert, who enjoys tormenting her, made me write that, but he doesn’t mean it. Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you.
