Bingo Buddy System Dear Aunt Bingo: I love Bingo, play weekly, wish I were luckier, but win or lose, really enjoy the whole Bingo experience. My one problem is that in recent years I have been unable to get any of my friends or family to go to Bingo with me. Do not misread my point—I am not a needy person. But I know from experience that it is far more fun to do an activity when you have someone along enjoying it with you. In the past I have had several Bingo buddies who I would go to Bingo with, but for various reasons they stopped going to Bingo which is why I am now making these trips on my own. My husband has “consented” to go with me one or two times. Unfortunately, it was only after I pestered him into it and from beginning to end it was clear that he couldn’t stand being there. This is the one scenario where I would absolutely rather go alone than have him along as a Bingo buddy! Which leaves me with the same dilemma—not having Bingo friends to play Bingo with. So, I thought I would email you and see if you had any suggestions on how I might team up with a Bingo buddy or two. I’m not the kind of person that is going to walk up to a stranger in a Bingo hall and ask them if they’d like to be my Bingo buddy. But except for that, I can’t really think

Dear Solo: As kids, it was so easy for us to fall into friendships. The classroom, the playground, the neighborhood—daily opportunities abounded for crossing paths with kid by the dozen. Unfortunately, as adults, especially older adults, striking up new friendships can be a real challenge. No one likes being a recipient of the suspicious, narrow-eyed glare of someone you’re trying to chat with who clearly wants you to go away. So, we avoid the risk by keeping our distance—being polite but aloof— when we’d really like to reach out and make a deeper human connection. In your case, you have a big leg up: You share an interest in Bingo with a room full of people who have the same interest. The next time you visit a Bingo hall, why not look for someone who is also solo and sit at their table. Before Bingo starts, you can chat with them casually and see if they respond positively. If they are short with their responses, drop it. If they are pleasant, then you’ve succeeded with your first step. From there you can try a little more chatting during breaks and perhaps exchange names. At the end of the games, joke about winning or losing, wish them a nice evening and be on your way. You have now established a basic connection. From there all you have to do is look for the person again, sit at their table, chat a little more, maybe bring a tempting snack to share, and wait and see if the two of you are heading down Bingo Buddy Boulevard. If you do not see the person, look for someone else and repeat step one. Eventually you will click with someone, or even several people, and develop a whole Bingo entourage! —Aunt Bingo
Bugles Across America There is no piece of music that elicits as much emotion as the 24 notes of “Taps,” the bugle call played at military funerals and ceremonies. In 2000, Congress passed legislation saying that the funerals of veterans should have two members of the military present, one to fold the flag and one to play “Taps.” The problem has been that in too many places there aren’t enough buglers. Funeral directors turned to “Taps” played on CD in a mechanical device that’s inserted into a bugle. That’s not quite the same thing. Bugles Across America was started in 2000 by Tom Day as a means of gathering buglers who would attend the funerals of veterans and play real “Taps.” Since he started, Day has signed up 4,000 buglers. Sounds like a lot, but it’s not, considering the number of veterans who pass away each day.
Even during this lockdown the BAA is receiving 20-30 requests for buglers every day. You can help. All you have to do is play “Taps.” The steps: Check the website at buglesacrossamerica.org. If you already play, brush up. You’ll need to audition, in person, with your state’s director or another designated person from the organization. You can be male or female. You can play a bugle with none, one, two or three valves; a trumpet; a cornet or a flugelhorn. The instrument doesn’t matter, but your playing does. You’ll learn, among other things, that Tom Day is out there each evening at 7 p.m. to sound “Taps” in honor of all our fallen brothers and sisters. The Julie Andrews/Christopher Plummer sensation that’s based on a Broadway musical that’s based on a memoir of a girl named Maria. The hills are alive, I tell you, in this sticky-sweet but catchy last of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.

A new month means new material available for streaming, and there are typically a few gems each month for savers. My appetite for distraction sometimes means these “new to free” are not “new to me,” but I treat them like new releases just the same — popcorn on my lap and the lights turned down for a maximum Couch Theater experience. Today, I was streaming Rocketman, the Taron Egerton-led Elton John musical, and it got me thinking up a set list of some of my favorite biopics about music makers. In no particular order: Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) — Sissy Spacek’s iconic, unforgettable turn as Loretta Lynn. This film had legions of us gals affecting a Kentucky accent and rooting for the famous country musician. Bird (1988) — Clint Eastwood directed Forest Whitaker to moody perfection as Charlie Parker, the jazz phenom nicknamed “Bird” who pioneered new styles and techniques. Sound

La Bamba (1987) — Lou Diamond Phillips pulls off a sincere and heartwarming rendition of California’s Mexican-American phenomenon Richie Valens, whose songs — especially the titular “La Bamba” — will make you want to “bailar” the night way. Esai Morales plays Richie’s halfbrother, and Los Lobos provides the music. Funny Girl (1968) — “Hello, gorgeous!” Fanny Brice (Barbra Streisand), famous singer and comedian, brings humor and delight to the big stage while dealing with a rocky personal life. Full of snappy songs and memorable lines, this film will never rain on your parade! Amadeus (1984) — With eight Oscar wins, Amadeus was a critical success, but Tom Hulce’s over the top turn as the 16th century composer and F. Murray Abraham as his archrival Antonio Salieri stands the test of time. My dad still quotes this movie. What’s Love Got to Do With It? (1993) — Tina Turner, all 12 miles of leg packed into a 5-foot4 frame, is perfectly embodied by Angela Bassett. Bonus: soulsearing R&B, plus the scenestealing performance by Laurence Fishburne as the aggressively jealous Ike Turner.

Kate Takes Off Cliff and Kate have been a couple for a number of years, happy to spend time together, but not devastated if they cannot do so. Cliff works for Microsoft and one day announced to us that his company was sending him to New Orleans to work. “I want to go, but,” he turned to Kate, “I don’t want to leave you behind.” He turned serious eyes on her. “Come with me. Let’s get married and shake the raindrops of Puget Sound off our boots.” “Oh, that is so poetic,” I said. Kate seemed incapable of speech. She stared at him without saying a word. “Don’t you want to, Baby?” he asked. “We’ll have a lot of fun in New Orleans. The company has a house for us.” He looked at me. “Reva can come to visit whenever she wants, and I think they play Bingo in The Big Easy.” Kate picked up her coffee cup, then set it down again. “Well, okay,” she said. “When do we have to be there?” Just like that, the deed was decided. They had a simple

AUGUST 2020 wedding in the chapel of our big church, with Rodney and me, cousins Bill, Irene and Joyce and nobody else. Afterward we all went out for a late lunch and one last Bingo session. It was a time of giggles as our group had imbibed champagne after the ceremony and were all feeling silly. We thought the Bingo patterns were hilarious. We devised new names for the games; for instance, the small picture frame became the “eyeball of Squaresville.” Five around the corner became “drizzle.” The reverse chevron became “our checkbook.” The Hollywood became “snuggles.” There was no rhyme or reason behind our names, we were just having fun. Between and during games, we sang. When B4 was called, we all sang, “Before the parade passes by.” When I22 was called, we sang “Oh to be 22 again and on my own.” For some reason, The Old Oaken Bucket appealed to us and we kept singing it over and over. The caller was very tired of us by the time we had to leave for the airport. By this time, of course, the champagne had totally worn off and the reality of what was happening began to hit me. I had a moment alone with Kate. “I will send you whatever you want from the house,” I promised. “I will call every day or two,” said Kate. “There will be a million things to do, but I won’t forget to call.” We hugged, then they were gone. The cousins left. Rod said he had to get home as he had an early appointment and I was suddenly completely alone. The house had never seemed so big and silent. The reality of having Kate go was so much bigger than the anticipation
of the event. I wandered from room to room, noting the mess she had left here and there. Her scent lingered in her bedroom and bath. I picked up a damp towel and dropped it in the clothes hamper. “This is not fair,” I shouted into the emptiness. “We are Bingo Sisters forever and ever and one of us does not get to move away!” The sound vibrations quivered in the air as I went about tidying the house mechanically, aware of doing busy work, but unable to stop myself. “It will never be the same,” I said aloud to no one, hating the truth I had uncovered. “No matter how many phone calls or e-mails or visits, it will never be the same.” Maybe that is good, I thought. A little change never hurt anyone and perhaps I will find a new Bingo partner. In the meantime, I will be The Bingo Sister.

Q: I was looking through my old CDs and found one by Jewel. I used to play it over and over. I realized that I haven’t heard anything new from her in a long time. Is she still recording albums? — S.T. A: Jewel is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter (and fantastic yodeler) from Alaska whose 1995 debut album, Pieces of You, has gone multi-platinum. She’s still recording, with her most recent album, Picking Up the Pieces, released in 2015. During the pandemic Jewel performed in an online concert called Live From San Quarantine. She was recently profiled on CBS Sunday Morning, where she said something quite profound: “One thing I’ve really learned in my life is the darkest of times are the most fertile opportunities.” She’s done a lot to raise money for troubled youth through InspiringChildren.net and her “Never Broken” organization, JewelNeverBroken.com. To answer your question, certainly during all this time in isolation her creativity has been sparked, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she released a new album in the near future.

I get a lot of e-mail at bobonbingo@earthlink. net asking about the history of Bingo. So, every year-and-ahalf in this column I present a look back at how we got here. The common feeling is that what we know today as Bingo started about 500 years ago in Italy. At that time there was a nationwide lottery. It was called “Il Gioco del Lotto d’Italia. By the 18th century (the 1700s) the concept had made its way to parts of Europe, including England and France. By this time, the idea of picking out numbered squares had changed from “a chance to make a lot of money” to simply a chance to have a lot of fun… while your companions laughed at you. As European society crossed the Atlantic, so did the spread of the game. Over the years, some of the players of the game began to mark their squares with dried beans. Soon, everyone was calling the game “Beano.” Now, here is a name to remember…Edwin S. Lowe. He was a toy manufacturer. He traveled the country peddling his ideas for toys. One night, with too much time on his hands,
he stopped into a carnival on the outskirts of a small town in Georgia. He noticed that nearly all the booths and attractions had closed, all but one. It was a small stand where people were laughing and shouting. They were playing Beano. He took the concept back to his offices on Long Island and in late 1926 he began to produce a kind of “home version” of the game. At a dinner party, he had his guests play. When one woman won, she didn’t yell “Beano,” instead she yelled BINGO. And, as they say, the rest is history. Lowe began to merchandise the game. But, HIS version of Bingo had a major flaw. He had a very limited number of combinations of cards (24), and this was before the age of computers. He soon got a call from a Catholic priest on the east coast. The priest said that his parish was using Bingo as a fundraiser, but there were too few combinations to really make the evening exciting. Lowe understood religion, and the need for fundraisers. He had been born in Poland. His father was a rabbi. He studied in the Holy Land. Certainly, he’d love to help the priest. So, Lowe hired an expert and increased the combinations to 6,000. By the way, Lowe used his profits from Bingo to invent and sell another famous game...Yahtzee. So, now you know. More next time.

How did we know at 6 and 8 what hypnosis was all about in those Sputnik-crazed, duck-and-cover days? Maybe from the Ed Sullivan Show, The Three Stooges, or Little Rascals, when TV cabinets were huge and the screens were small; when all three channels signed off at midnight with the National Anthem, the flag waving, Blue Angels in formation, and officers in salute; followed by the stern allnight gaze of an Indian in full warrior head dress. Charlie mashed the cat down--while I swung a pocket watch. “You’re getting very sleepy,” I intoned. The cat blinked slowly and turned its head side to side in rhythm with the watch.. “When we let go, you will run down the stairs.” We took a breath and Charlie let go. The cat raced down the stairs, skittered on the landing, ran left, and out the front door! Before we could savor our success Charlie and I were struck with fear: “How can we catch the cat and say ‘1-2-3 Wake-up’?” We made a solemn vow: “Don’t tell Mom.” “Don’t you tell Mom.” Charlie told. It was a moment that defines our relationship to this day. I don’t know what happened to the cat. Maybe it lived out its lives forever driven to run down stairs. Maybe another child dabbling in dark science saw the problem and knew to say, “1-2-3-Wake-up!”

Campaign For Higher Bingo Prizes Hi Guy, What is the deal with prize money at Bingo? When you go to casinos and Indian games many times the jackpots are in the thousands of dollars. Meanwhile, when you are home and go to local Bingo the top prizes are only in the hundreds and most of the time are much less. It seems to me that the charity Bingos would do a lot better if they would give out more prize money. I know, I know…this is where you
tell us that charity Bingo is for supporting worthy causes and that’s where most of the money should go. Of course, I am not going to disagree with that. But isn’t it logical that the more prize money there is, the more people will come to charity Bingo to play, which means the more money there will be for needy causes as well? To me that results in a total win-win-win. Higher prizes (and more of them) means more players spending more money (on games, food, etc.) which means more income for the charity Bingo to support the hall itself and the worthy causes they help. Just think: A fresh coat of paint, new furniture (for players and workers), a better sound system, better heat and AC— improvements like that would make our dinky little Bingo halls so much more comfortable and inviting. Awarding charities thousands of dollars to help their good deeds instead of hundreds would obviously be a good thing. And it goes without saying that awarding lots more players lots more prize money would be very

exciting and fun. Win-win-win! I hope that Bingo games everywhere will see this letter and think about these ideas. It could be the start of a Bingo revolution! Carlos L., via email Hi Carlos, It’s unclear whether you are aware of the regulations most charity Bingo games fall under, particularly with regard to the money passing through them. Regulations vary from state to state and are considerably different for smaller charity Bingos versus large Indian and other casino games. But the bottom line is this: States regulate (and in some cases, prohibit) Bingo because it is considered gambling; a key part of that regulation is keeping the amount of money collected and awarded (whether as prize money or charitable giving) relatively low. The reason behind it is simple: Whenever there is money changing hands, there is the potential for criminal elements to step in and corrupt the process. The best way to avoid that? Don’t allow the amount the money involved to ever get so high that it catches the eye

of money-grubbing lowlifes. I would encourage you to search the Internet for the regulations that govern Bingo in your state. If you can stand wading through the legalese—and trust me, there’s a lot of it—you might find it interesting to see just how much “in as much as,” “whereto” and “wherefor” there is pertaining to something as seemingly simple as Bingo. After all that, if you are still determined to do something to increase Bingo prize limits, I encourage you to begin a petition, get some Bingo game sponsors involved, approach your favorite state lawmaker and see if you can make it happen. Minding Your Gambling Manners Following is the fourth installment on my casino manners series focusing on Roulette (next month, the last in the series, will cover Slots & Video Poker). As noted, even if you are a seasoned veteran, it won’t hurt to brush up on your casino manners to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation.
Roulette
--Space is limited around a roulette table so don’t try to muscle your way in. Do not lean over another player to make your bets. If you can’t reach the felt ask the dealer to make the bet for you. (Note: if you are at the far end of the table and want to wager on the popular split bet on 0 and 00, just place your chip/s on the line that separates the “second 12” from the “third 12” on the outside bottom area of the layout.) --Special roulette chips are used at each roulette table. You must purchase them when you buy-in. They are color coded so that each player has their own set of colored chips (that makes it easy for the dealer to know whose bet belongs to whom).

AUGUST 2020 Roulette chips cannot be used anywhere else in the casino and they can’t be converted to cash at the cashier so do not leave the table with them (i.e. they must be cashed in and converted to casino chips at the table where you are playing). Also, do not use roulette chips to tip a cocktail waitress. --Do not pick up winning chips from the layout or start to make bets on the next spin until the dealer has cleared the table of losing bets, paid off the winning bets, and removed the marker off the winning number (this is the number one faux pas in roulette). --Try to avoid waiting until the roulette ball is ready to drop into the bowl to place your bets. If you need help making bets, especially for those out of reach, ask the dealer. --Be very careful how you position your chips on the layout so there is no confusion what bet you are making (this is particularly the case for bets straight up on a number where your chip/s should be placed in the center of the number’s square). --When you are finished playing, tell the dealer you want to color up. Stack your roulette chips neatly (in stacks of 20 chips) and let the dealer drag them across the layout (I once tried pushing them over to the dealer–they are probably still looking for some of those chips that I scattered all over the casino floor). The dealer will count the chips and then give you an equivalent amount in casino chips, which you can use at other table games or take to the cashier.

Dog Days and Cat Nights Cats are smarter than dogs. You can’t get eight cats to pull a sled through snow. —Anonymous Woof, woof, the Dog Days of Summer (July 3- August 11) are upon us. They are named that because this is when Sirius, the dog star, appears in the night sky. Ancient people believed that drought, disease, and discomfort occurred at this time due to the combined heat of Sirius and our own sun. Regardless, most of us accept that August is indeed a scorcher month. Fun fact, the name Sirius means scorcher in Greek. On the other hand, Cat Nights begin on August 17. This makes sense because nights start getting longer during August and cats are nocturnal hunters with superior night vision. Therefore, their yowling and prowling becomes more prevalent and obvious. August signals the start of another school year. Before retiring, I loved planning for my new students; thinking of ways to present old material after summer break. Before the Civil War, schools did not have summer vacation. In rural communities, kids had school off during spring planting and fall harvest while urban schools were essentially year-round. The long summer holiday didn’t occur until the early 20th century and who knows why. This may be a moot point in the future
since in-house schooling, on-line schooling, and home schooling have all evolved in ways many of us didn’t anticipate. I loved the student interaction and the dynamics of molding young minds while they stared me in the face. In today’s world, that option may soon become obsolete and all students will face a computer with limited access to human feedback. That makes me sad. On a happier note, my husband and I are flying to Vegas. There’s a lot going on right now so we will be spending most of our time in Laughlin, Nevada, about ninety miles from Sin City. Not that Robert and I sin very much unless you call going to late night bingo, playing the slots, or eating way more than we should a sin. If so, then we’re indeed guilty as sin. A daily margarita or two doesn’t count either because the salt on the rim of the glasses will sanitize our mouths. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I am anticipating playing bingo once again for big bucks since our local ones have been closed for months. The self-quarantine and social distancing make me realize how much I have taken for granted and is now forever changed in this wonderful country in which we live. Summer ends, fall begins. In yesteryears this was celebrated with bonfires. The belief was that crops would grow as high as a couple could jump across the fire. If Robert and I were that couple we would surely burn our tootsies and toast our buns thus foretelling our crops would wither on the vine. However, if crop growth depended on our consumption of watermelons, hot dogs, and ice cream, we could insure bumper crops. The average American each consumes fifteen pounds of watermelon and twenty quarts of ice cream annually; not to mention a combined seven billion hot dogs between Memorial and Labor Day. Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes
Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner. What follows are the rules of the contest. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted. Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms
that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing. Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received. Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize. Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month's contest. Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing. By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize. The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.
