Doloris Welbes won the Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes and that’s a great thing because we got the chance to meet her so we could write this article. And Boy-O-Boy is she sumthin’.

She earned her education degree in the 1950’s, she taught 3rd grade children’s classes and she also taught adult education. She taught for M.P.S. for over 20 years.

Doloris has written articles for national and international professional technical magazines, got married in the blizzard of 1947 and had three children, Therese, Janie and David in 1948, ‘49 and ‘58.

In 1954 she was selected to represent Milwaukee on the Campbell Soup Double or Nothing Show in California hosted by the famous Walter O’Keefe. She says, “That was exciting”.

She lived in Appleton from 1958 to 1962 when she returned to the Milwaukee area. In 1982, Doloris’ mom died and her dad moved in with her.

Back in 1968 her mom and dad started HARMONY SINGERS. Since younger people were too busy with their families and didn’t have much extra time, they thought it made sense for a group of Seniors to get together and sing for their fellow seniors in churches, hospitals and healhcare centers. Doloris still sings with HARMONY SINGERS to this day.

Doloris can only play Bingo on alternate Sundays because she bowls every other Sunday. Her average is higher than some staff members in the Bingo Bugle Newsroom.

Bye-Bye Bingo Hall Dear Aunt Bingo, Something happened that I think should NEVER happen again.

One of the Bingo attendants made me feel bad because I didn’t tip enough ($20).

I had just hit the coverall Bingo for $800. I was in seventh heaven.

I play there a lot and have never hit such a large Bingo.

I did not even know what I hit; I was just so excited that I had won.

I have spent so much money on Bingo but have only hit once in a while. I am 88 years old, live on Social Security and lost my husband last year, and still owe so much on his debts. I was so excited that I would be able to pay some money on his debts.

Now why am I criticized when I tip? And how do we know how much to tip…if we decide to tip at all? I wish they had a No Tipping policy, and no flack from the attendants when we don’t tip what they think we should tip.

Right now I love to play Bingo but will never play Bingo at this hall again. Instead of making me feel how lucky I am, I now feel badly.

No one has ever made me feel this way before. Is there anything I should do? Someone should be told how badly they made me feel and that they have lost me as a

Winning any jackpot is fun, but winning a big pot truly is heaven.

The last thing you want is for someone to come along and spoil the moment.

The fact that there is tipping tells me this is a for-profit hall. As such, this means that it is being operated not by volunteers, but by Bingo professionals. And browbeating a player to me is not being professional.

That said, you have to remember that tipping is an established part of the service profession, and most establishments have an accepted tipping rate. If you go to dinner, you are expected to tip your server 1520% of the cost of the meal. So, a $100 meal would have a tip of $20. When you have your hair done, you typically tip the stylist at the same rate.

Assuming that tipping at this gaming hall is similar, and you won $800, then a tip of 10% would be $80 and 5% would be $40. You tipped $20, or 2.5%, which might seem pretty low to the attendant.

I know how hard it can be to suddenly win a lot of money and have someone there expecting to get a piece of it. But, like dining out, you have to have the mindset that tipping is going to be part of the “winning experience.” Look at it as sharing the joy! —Aunt Bingo

As of now, so many employees are sick with COVID-19 and unable to work that the rollout has been moved from March 5 to April 30.

That particular system, with multiple VA locations in 15 counties, currently has a COVID positivity rate of over 30% with one county seeing an increase of 150% in the past two weeks.

In a Tizzy My friend Jo suffers from vertigo.

I explain that there are these little things in back of the ears that get stuck together and it takes special exercises to loosen them, but she keeps going to therapy with little results. Vertigo affects every part of her life. She can’t drive her car or walk upstairs. But we decided to give Bingo a try.

“Kate will drive, and we will both help you with your cards as long as you don’t buy too many,” I said. “You can get out of the house and have some fun for a change.”

We drove to the casino for Bingo, Jo saying it would be better in a bigger place with people she didn’t know. Besides they have good floor help and that makes the playing better.

APRIL 2022 We were having a good time.

Jo’s dizziness wasn’t bothering her, and we were getting along fine when up popped a new game none of us had encountered before. It was called The Skyscraper and consisted of the entire N row, the bottom three G’s, the bottom three I’s and a cute little jagged foursome somewhere else on the card that was supposed to be a bolt of lightning.

This one took real concentration and before long Jo began to have trouble. “I’m getting dizzy trying to keep up with this one,” she said.

Then she realized what she had said and began to giggle. “I don’t really mean I’m dizzy. I’m just in a tizzy. It keeps me too busy.”

Someone soon won that game,

organize ourselves for the second half of play. Jo didn’t seem to be affected by the vertigo today and daubed and giggled happily.

Then the lightning rod came up, which was also a new game for us. It consisted of six daubs one above the other, the middle two overlapping. It is not as easy as you would think, but Jo was on right away and won it, although she had to share with two other winners.

The next game I was on right away and soon was able to say to the floor helper something I had always wanted to say, “Bingo on the next number.” She took my card, called “Bingo” for me and validated my win. It was a great moment and I only had to share with one other player.

Next was Bonanza and Jo began to have vertigo.

Kate and I had a terrible time trying to keep up with all our cards and watch out for Jo at the same time. A floor worker brought Jo a glass of water as she could see she was not feeling well, while Kate and I kept up with the cards. Soon there was a Bingo and I could relax. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to lose,” I said, and we gathered our stuff for the ride home.

Vertigo affects every part of her life. but the rhyming continued. At intermission, Kate went to take a whizzy, while I got a drink that we pronounced a fizzy. “It’s intermission,” said Jo, “so we are in mizzy.”

We thought we were so funny and kept giggling as we tried to

The Joy of Bingo Glad to have you along here. During the past several months I have had several medical interruptions in my life—procedures and trips to the hospital that prevented me from playing Bingo when I wanted to.

During much of that time I began to realize just how much I depended on going to Bingo (on Friday and Sunday nights) for my morale and for having something to look forward to. I can tell you, in all honesty, during the weeks when I was NOT able to join my friends I nearly went nuts.

It is possible, perhaps, to become too dependent on going to Bingo; but I have reached the point in my life that I don’t really have much else to occupy my mind. Thank goodness for you joining me each

APRIL 2022 month to talk about the game that we all love best.

Do you have any thoughts about times when you weren’t able to play Bingo? I would welcome your comments: bobonbingo@ earthlink.net. I would be interested to hear of your experiences when it came to medical problems that kept you from playing. Additionally, I always welcome your e-mail and love to print your comments. So, before closing out this month’s edition, here is an e-mail I received from KDT in Southern Illinois.

“Bob, thanks for being here month after month. I want to tell you that I think I have been reading your column for more than 20 years. I remember that for much of that time you lived in Vegas and were able to play Bingo nearly every night. Again, thanks for your monthly comments and for giving the average reader—such as myself—a chance to speak my mind. KDT.” KDT, it’s my pleasure. I love hearing from you and others. I know a lot of people who write Bingo columns love to have fun, and so do I, but sometimes there are serious things to talk about… including callers who mumble. In the old days the problems often involved poor ventilation and bad air in halls.

Next month, I will check my e-mail again and we can start looking forward to better weather (vacation weather) for many of us.

* If your dog likes a treat of moistened dry food from time to time, use the water from cooking vegetables. It has a bit of flavor and some vitamins, too! * Do you have a screw loose ... in your eyeglasses? This is an easy fix. Paint the screw with a dab of clear nail polish and quickly rescrew. It works like glue. Dab the top of the screw for a little extra insurance. * Wrap the metal collar of your paintbrush with masking tape before painting. Then you can peel it off and there’s no stuck-on paint. * Here’s an old tip, but a good one: Before going away on vacation, put a couple of ice cubes in a plastic baggie, and set it at the front of the freezer. When you return, if there is any evidence of melting, you will know you lost power while you were gone. If the bag is one big, flat cube, you lost power long enough to suspect all your refrigerator items of being spoiled. * Cut your kitchen sponge in half, or even thirds. You can clean just as well with a smaller sponge, and you will extend its life, saving you money. A smaller sponge dries out more quickly, too.

Q: I was disappointed to hear that William Petersen and Jorja Fox will not be returning to “CSI: Vegas.” Was the plan for them to leave after just one season, or is the show not coming back at all?

— T.R. A: According to William Peterson, who also is a producer of CSI: Vegas, he only committed to playing Grissom for 10 episodes. Fox won’t be returning as Sara either, explaining that she doesn’t want the duo split up, that “wherever they go, they belong together.”

Fortunately, Marg Helgenberger recently signed a contract with CBS to return as Catherine Willows after missing out on the first season of Vegas due to a prior commitment.

Helgenberger starred in the first 12 seasons of the original CSI series and has been greatly missed in the Vegas spinoff.

Dear Guy, What are your feelings about Bingo machines? I’ve been curious to try one, but I also like dabbing on paper Bingo cards and the machines look like they might be boring— they do all the work for you while you sit there twiddling your thumbs waiting for the machine to go beep.

Dear Len, The machines are as fun as you make them: You punch in the number and the machines tracks your cards, so you’ll never miss a Bingo. Obviously, the big attraction is that they allow a slow player to play more cards. They also give people with disabilities, who might not be physically able to dab paper cards, the opportunity to play along with the best.

I’ve tried Bingo machines and definitely see their merits. And that’s saying something, because I’m not a big fan of most technology.

(I find it pushy.) And it definitely cuts down on missed numbers.

But, bottom line—I prefer my good ol’ ink dabber and paper. If I didn’t have something in front of me to thunk, I’d get way bored way fast.

What Type are You? Part II Last month we looked at personality types and which games suit those types. In addition to budget, and educating yourself on how to play correctly, your personality has a lot to do with choosing the right game. Following are more types and the games that do, and do not, suit those types.

Have you found your type yet?

Innovative, imaginative, original: If you always like to try something new and different, you’ve got several choices in the casino. For starters there are the poker-based table games, Let It Ride, Caribbean Stud Poker and Three-Card Poker.

There are also the multi-line video poker machines. If slots are your thing, you’ve got a slew of choices as new slot machines keep hitting the casino floor almost weekly.

Tightwad, frugal, hate to part with a nickel: Hey, you might think that being frugal and gambling in a casino is an oxymoron, but it isn’t. In fact, Jean Scott has written several best-selling books about this (The Frugal Gambler and More Frugal Gambling). Her tips include learning how to play video poker smartly and then take advantage of the comp and slot club promotions.

Emotional, quiet, readily gets upset, hates controversy: Forget craps or blackjack. Your best bet is to play the slot or video poker machines where you can play in solitude and not have to worry about anyone or anything.

APRIL 2022 Your cup of tea might be playing the comp game in a casino. That’s where you try to get as many freebies from the casino as you can to offset the mathematical advantage they have when you play. If you play the comp game correctly, you can actually enjoy a monetary edge over the casino.

If you are analytical besides, you’ve got another option. Learn blackjack card counting. It’s another way to beat the casinos at their own game. Frank Scoblete’s Beat Blackjack Now! has the easiest card counting system ever developed, Speed Count. You can learn it in 15 minutes!

Are you right brained or left brained?

There is a questionnaire used in the business world to profile individuals’ thinking style. It’s called the Hermann Brain Dominance Profile. Based on how you answer the multiple-choice questions in the survey, you are classified as either being conservative, controlled, emotional (called a ‘right brainer’) as opposed to someone that is more analytical, technical, logical, and detailed (“left brainer”). When it comes to casino gambling, “left brainers” do well with games like blackjack, video poker, and table poker that require analytical, sometimes quantitative thinking.

For example, I’m an educated chemist with a strong mathematical background and I scored high as a left brainer. Not surprisingly, my casino game of choice has always been blackjack and video poker.

A friend of mine scored as a right brainer and not too surprisingly, he likes to play the slot machines.

Extravagant, flamboyant, ostentatious, flashy: If you have a lot of money and want everyone else to know it, then baccarat, blackjack, or craps could be your game. Nothing turns heads more in a casino than the well-dressed man or woman sitting at the baccarat table and betting hundreds of dollars on each round. Except maybe reserving a blackjack table in the middle of the casino floor and playing all the spots with black or purple chips.

Bet big enough and the casino may even post a few guards near the table to shush away the tourists as they gawk at your extravagant playing style. Of course, you and your money are always welcome at the craps table, where anything goes.

What's News in Nevada . . .

New Cirque’s Show Cirque du Soleil has a new show set to open at New York-New York on May 26. Mad Apple will be “a cocktail of music, comedy, magic, and mayhem that puts NYC nightlife under the Las Vegas lights. Each act will reflect a different side of New York, brought to life by underground stars, highflying acrobats, street performers, up-and-coming entertainers, and the biggest musical hits to come out of the City.” The show features comedian Brad Williams, marking the first time a standup comic will headline a Cirque production, along with freestyle rapper Chris Turner, musical director and lead vocalist Xharlie Black, and a cast of thirty-nine performers.

Lucky Hit at Caesars A lucky Utah man playing Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em at Caesars Palace wound up with a royal flush in clubs to hit the Mega Progressive Jackpot for $779,148.50. The player said he was a veteran at UTH and will use the winnings to pay off his house.

Kevin Hart at Cosmo Stand-up comic, actor, and founder of the digital comedy production company and network Laugh Out Loud Kevin Hart will do four shows at the Cosmopolitan at 7 and 10 p.m. on July 2 and July 3. Tickets start at $399 and rise to $1,250 and were going fast at press time. Note that the use of phones will not be permitted in the performance space; phones will be secured in pouches that can be opened only at the end of the event.

Vegas Vegan News Sometime in May or June, the Los Angeles-based vegan restaurant Crossroads Kitchen will open at Resorts World. When it does, it

will be the first vegan fine-dining restaurant on the Strip, serving the likes of artichoke oysters topped with kelp caviar, roasted truffle potatoes, beet tartare, stuffed zucchini blossoms, and housemade pasta. A second Resorts World location, CB/Crossroads Burgers, will purvey vegan burgers, sausage, fries, and milkshakes.

Crossroads’ founder Tal Ronnen is no stranger to Vegas; he worked with the Wynn’s culinary team a decade ago to introduce vegan options on all the Wynn’s menus.

He’s also the author of two vegan cookbooks, was Oprah Winfrey’s personal chef, and catered Ellen DeGeneres’ 2008 wedding.

Vegas Pizza Spots Make Top 100 The online review site, Yelp.com, created a list of the Top Places for Pizza in the U.S., based on the all-time total number and ratings of reviews. Seasonal Woes and Wows Dear Mother Nature, get back on your meds, crack open a bottle of wine, and start thinking warm Spring thoughts.

— Comedy Club 24/7 Has Spring sprung yet? Yes, Spring started Sunday, March 20; ends June 21. Well, la dee da, some would say. Personally, I like all the seasons as each comes with its own beauty. Summer heat, oh yeah, as long as I can cool my heels in air conditioning while watching others burn in the sun.

Then comes fall, with crisp breezes and lovely leaves; and seasonal allergies that invade my nostrils like ants attacking a candy bar. My red nose, coughing, and sneezing make me a delight to behold. How about winter? Snow is sinfully beautiful to watch as it drifts and blows across the lawn; and I can watch someone else shovel my walks and driveway. Which brings us back to spring, full circle, with tornado season, more allergies, spring cleanups, and shoveling the winter debris out of my house as well as my driveway. Somehow over winter, my clutter multiplies, and I ponder from whence came myriad boxes, junk mail, and crap of unknown origin.

Yes, flowers are blooming, gardens are being planted, and I love watching others dig, hoe, and mow knowing I can buy flowers, veggies, and fruit at the local supermarket with much less

effort. My husband says he doesn’t understand how a girl like me, who grew up on a farm, can not wish to enjoy all that Mother Nature offers.

Well, Mother Nature can flick ice pellets with abandon at my wrinkly butt for all I care. I love being indoors and reading; working on my laptop; venturing outside to play bingo and visit casinos. As I pointed out, all seasons are beautiful and all have drawbacks, but my climatecontrolled home and my husband who chauffeurs me around are what I most appreciate and love.

That brings me to April 12, D.E.A.R Day which means Drop Everything and Read and April 17, Husband Appreciation Day. I frequently read when I should be doing other things like chores, and I truly appreciate Robert who often does chores while I am reading.

He’s the best.

Reminder. April 6 is New Beer’s Eve. In 1920 the 18th amendment went into effect and all intoxicating liquors including beer were banned.

This continued until April 7, 1933, when President Roosevelt ended Prohibition. Thus, April 6, became New Beer’s Eve when we can all toast our freedom to enjoy a beer with our pizza; or a margarita or two. And that’s what I frequently do while playing bingo in Vegas. I buy cards, sit down facing the caller, then order a margarita. If I holler bingo, I toast my luck. If I don’t get to holler bingo, I drown out my sorrow and whining about bad luck by ordering another margarita.

Rules for The Bingo Bugle Monthly Cash Sweepstakes

Each month the Bingo Bugle of Wisconsin conducts a monthly “Sweepstakes” featuring a $100.00 prize for the winner.

What follows are the rules of the contest.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted.

Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing.

Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received.

Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize.

Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month’s contest.

Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing.

By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes.

Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize.

The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check.
