For the first time in memory, there is no inperson Bingo available.

The COVID19 virus can spread easily when people assemble in groups. It appears that this virus can be 10 times as dangerous as the seasonal flu. This fact alone would make it prudent to suspend playing Bingo. The Governor of the State of Wisconsin, Tony Evers has issued Emergency Order #12, Safer at Home Order which has the force of law. This order in effect prohibits the playing of Bingo as we know it.

Quoting from the language of the Emergency Order, we find the following: “2. Non-essential business and operations must cease. All for-profit and non-profit businesses with a facility in Wisconsin, except Essential Businesses and Operations as

defined below, are required to cease all activities at facilities located within Wisconsin.”

According to the order, Bingo is considered a Prohibited Activity. Again quoting from the Governor’s Order,”3. Prohibited activities. All public and private gatherings of any number of people that are not part of a single household or living unit are prohibited, except for the limited purposes expressly permitted in this Order. “ As you can see, when we take together the medical guidance from the federal government above, 15 Days to Slow the Spread, the common sense of what we know about the risks of this Corona Virus Disease, especially to the population of Bingo Players which contains many seniors and the legal order of the

Governor of Wisconsin, your favorite Bingo Operators had no choice, but to suspend Bingo until the danger is over.

Since Bingo Halls are closed and the other businesses that help distribute the Bingo Bugle Newspaper have evolved to delivery and curb side take-out only, there are no locations to distribute the hard copy of the newspaper. Therefore, as long as necessary, the Bingo Bugle will appear as an on-line edition only.

We hope and pray for everyone’s good health and safety during this difficult time. Please join us in following all of the safe practices shown above and give your relatives and friends a call to make sure they are safe.

Too Many Packs can be a Pain Dear Aunt Bingo: This past year I decided I was going to make a change in how many packs I play at Bingo.

The obvious logic (which you have covered many times in your excellent column) is that the more cards you play, the better your odds.

I generally agree with this up to a point—that point being that there are only so many packs a person can handle, and if they go beyond that number they will (1) make mistakes by dabbing the wrong numbers or missing called numbers altogether, and/ or (2) be able to keep up but be so stressed out in doing so that they are a bundle of nerves and have absolutely no fun at the Bingo tables.

For some time I was playing with a large number of packs and could keep up with the caller no problem, but on the following day found that my body ached and I would sometimes have a headache—I assumed from the position in which I sat and all the fast eye movement.

Eventually I decided it was too much; I reduced the number of packs I play and took the extra time I used to spend scanning and dabbing to rest my arms, stretch my back and neck, and relax my eyes. It made a huge difference in how I felt while I played and especially the next day.

It wasn’t easy making this change, especially when I saw other players around me with two, three or more packs than I had.

And on occasion (usually when I feel extra lucky) I still will bump up the number of packs without any physical trouble the next day,

APRIL 2020 but not push it.

Also, because I am now avoiding the aches and pains, I don’t need as much time to “rest up” between Bingo trips and actually play more often and spend about the same amount of money. This has given me the opportunity to try some other, new Bingo halls I’ve seen in your newspaper, which has been fun.

Another part of my thinking on this is that I noticed that when I have a good night, the winning seems to come from one or two of the packs, while the others are weak losers for the entire session.

It got me wondering if the “more packs = better odds” theory really is true, when in fact you are investing in several packs which turn out to be a complete waste of time, money and energy.

Alise J., New York Dear Alise: If you found yourself with a host of aches and pains after a Bingo outing, you were wise to examine what might be causing your discomfort and make the necessary adjustments to your “Bingo Lifestyle.”

Over the years I’ve done the same thing—like bringing a seat cushion as protection against unfriendly folding chairs and getting up and walking around between sessions to stretch my muscles and get the blood flowing.

I learned long ago what my limit is with Bingo packs and play accordingly. Sometimes I’ll go with one or two more or less, depending on how I feel that particular day. I never want Bingo-playing to be a chore.

I understand what you are saying about one or two packs getting more action than the others and that it might make sense to play fewer because of it. But there may be a hitch in that logic.

Some players could argue that the only way to get the strong packs is by buying more total packs. If you only buy one or two, they both could be stinkers. Navigating the Medical Care Maze It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of medical care. When something is wrong, you need to know what it is, and quickly. That didn’t happen with a veteran in New York.

For that veteran there was a delay in finding out about abnormal test results. Policies say that if the results require intervention or action, the patient needs to hear from the ordering provider in seven days. If that provider isn’t available, each medical facility must have a surrogate, someone charged with handling the test results. In other words, the results just don’t get lost somewhere and forgotten.

For the veteran above, there was a 36-day delay. The person who ran the tests quickly passed along the results to the surrogate provider... who sat on them for 28 days. After handing them off to the next in line in the hierarchy (the chief of staff), the veteran was

finally notified eight additional days later.

In another case there was a problem with ambulance transport.

A provider told paramedics to transport a veteran to a certain civilian hospital because the closest civilian hospital didn’t have the proper equipment. The doctor personally called the hospital and verified that information. The paramedics, however, decided to take the patient to the closest civilian hospital. They later had to pick up the veteran and take him to the correct hospital.

This leaves it to you, the patient, to ask questions. Specifically you want to know: When will the medical test results be ready?

Who will have those results? Get the name and phone number. If you’re transported by ambulance and can communicate, ask where you’re being taken.

The more medical people you query along the way, the better your chances of being listened to and finding the one with the information you need. Be persistent. bridges into and out of Manhattan are shut down for the night. But before dawn, blurred lines between right and wrong may have trapped a different villain.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (PG) — Inspired by real life and written about a real-life inspiration, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a loving biopic of Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks). His story is told through the eyes of an emotional skeptic, Esquire magazine writer Lloyd (Matthew Rhys), who is assigned to write a short article on Rogers as a hero. His graciousness and empathy, kindness and love are on unapologetic display in everything he does, so it’s no surprise that interviewing Rogers — who touched so many people’s hearts, both young and old — changes Lloyd.

21 Bridges (R) — Chadwick Boseman stars as a detective with a reputation for tracking down and dealing with cop killers in a gripping drama set in New York City. Two low-level crooks attempt to pinch what they think is a small amount of cocaine when they are interrupted by couple of cops, whom they kill in a shootout. Enter Det. Andre Davis, NYPD’s finest bad guy catcher. The manhunt is on, and there’s no escape as the 21

Jojo Rabbit (PG-13) — Young Jojo is a Hitler Youth believer. He believes it so hard that Adolf Hitler is his imaginary friend (played hilariously by Taika Waititi, who also writes and directs), the one who gives him a bucking up when the boys at camp come down on him. He has a perennially positive and optimistic single mother (Scarlett Johansson) who is hiding a Jewish former classmate of his late sister in the attic. His discovery of Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) leads Jojo to reflect on his own nationalistic beliefs and racism while the makeshift family confronts the last days of World War II. Also stars Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson as youth camp administrators.

Midway (PG-13) — Director Roland Emmerich revives an aerial World War II drama in his remake of the 1976 classic. It’s not the wartime story told in microcosm through the personal drama of a single soldier, it’s as sweeping as the sky and as vast as the Pacific. In fact, the story unfolds quickly and it’s rife with heroic and dramatic acts sandwiched between tense moments of furious contemplation. If all this seems like I’m laying it on thick, that’s the vibe. It’s a classic war story told by and about good-looking, clean-shaven men in uniform doing their best for America, and some of them tragically dying in service of our nation.

Battle of the Would Be Brother-In-Laws Paul’s mother was as sweet and charming as anyone could ask and it turned out she loved Bingo!

“I don’t get to play that often,” she said, “we have to alternate Bingo with several other games and it never seems enough to me.”

“Well you can have your fill today,” I said, moving over to make room for her.

In the meantime, Paul had gone to get cards for her and one extra for me.

“For luck,” he said, handing me the extra card. “I’ll bet this is the winner today.”

And it turned out he was right.

The extra card won the game, but then we didn’t know what to do with the winnings. Who did they belong to? We decided to just make a pile in the center of the table of all our winnings and decide later who owned what.

Next we played a game that was

APRIL 2020 new to me. It was called Babylon 5 and consisted of three straight lines of Bingo. I could not see how the name bore any resemblance to the game and said so, rather loudly I’m afraid. A worker came over and stood by me and I was quiet.

Paul’s mother was not quiet, however and shouted out the number she needed. And it appeared in the screen, as if by magic. She won the game and I said to her. “I can’t keep calling you, ‘Paul’s Mother,” give me something else.”

“My name is Rosalee,” she said, “And you may call me Rosalee or Rose or Lee or make up a new name for me.”

“You are such a bonny lass, I’d like to call you Bonny,” I said.

“That’s great,” she said. “I like that.”

Next we played four corners and a diagonal and our lucky extra card won again. We were beginning to have quite a little cash in the middle of our table. Then of course came the inevitable slow down. We won no more until the break, at which point Paul took drink orders and the rest of us stretched.

“I’m having such a good time,” said Bonny. “I’m so glad Paul brought me here. I don’t even care about all your romantic entanglements.”

“They aren’t mine,” I protested.

“I’m just along for the ride.”

Then I realized Paul and Cliff were having an argument and Kate sat grinning at them both.

“I want Kate to get acquainted with my mother, she’s very

important to me.”

“All right,” said Cliff, “You can have this evening, but tomorrow is mine!”

He sounded really angry.

“Okay. After breakfast—that’s when my mom leaves.”

Nobody was interested in taking me out. I had to make do. I decided the pile of money belonged to me, however, and I gathered it up and tucked it in my purse.

We left the Bingo hall, having had a super time with all the entanglements.

“Come to breakfast tomorrow,” Bonny called to me as we were leaving. I knew I would. This whole drama was too good to miss and besides I had a stake in who, exactly, my new brother-in-law was to be.

Q: Whatever happened to Heather Graham?

She was everywhere about 20 years ago, but I haven’t seen her in anything in quite some time. — C.T. A: Heather Graham first made it big as a teen actress in the ‘80s comedy film License to Drive, but it was her serious role in Drugstore Cowboy with Matt Dillon that really got her noticed. She later starred in an Austin Powers movie, but got the most attention for playing Rollergirl in the movie Boogie Nights.

She’s actually worked steadily for the past three decades, including another blockbuster comedy, The Hangover, and she’s had regular roles on TV series like Californication, Angie Tribeca and Get Shorty.

Now, at 50 years old, Graham is no longer considered an ingenue, but fortunately her career is still thriving. She stars in the independent film The Rest of Us, and she can be seen in the upcoming CBS All Access limited series The Stand. Yes, it’s based on the Stephen King novel of the same name that also was made into a miniseries in the ‘90s.

First of all, let me thank all of you who have written me during the past nearly two decades at: bobonbingo@earthlink.net.

Recently, I got an email from an old friend whom I had not heard from for a long time. His letter brought back a lot of memories. His name is Robert A. He lives in a small town in Southern Indiana, very close to where I grew up. Here is what he had to say: “Bob, I was going through an old desk the other day and I found one of your columns from more than ten years ago. I think it has great content. In case you can’t find it, here is the gist of what you said. You noted that there are TOO MANY COMPLICATED Bingo PATTERNS at many halls. And, you were right then. And, you are right now.

“A lot of halls forget two things.

First, not everyone plays ever session, week-after-week. And, secondly, there are many new people at Bingo each week. Most halls are filled with really nice people who work very hard to make Bingo happen—at every session.

At the smaller halls, most are unpaid volunteers. Many work for

their church or a special charity.

But, nice guys and gals that they may be, they also can get into a rut.

“And, when people get into a rut, they fail to realize that the rut may be comfortable for them, but it can be a not-so-nice place for many of the players. So, based on this, I have some suggestions: “First, no hall should have more than four patterns for which you can win. A lot of people have such a problem visualizing ALL the many ways they can Bingo, that they are so busy checking things out that they can’t follow the game. I am sure many of them have had a Bingo and didn’t know it. This happens all the time when there are too many patterns to follow.

“Additionally, when there ARE certain rules that may apply ONLY to that hall, such as adding “four corners” to game four, those rules should be announced at the beginning of the session, slowly and in a clear voice. New people will only keep coming back if they understand what is going on and feel as though the hall is making them feel at home. There are few things worse than playing Bingo in a hall where you feel like an outsider because of all the odd rules that are never explained.

Bingo Conspiracy Theorists Weigh In Hi Guy, A few months back, I started going to Bingo again. On the first day back, I noticed a lady a couple of tables from me that won on a Bingo machine. The following week, the same lady won two Bingos in the same session and the third time a week later, she won again on the Bingo machine.

It is possible that she was having a stroke of good luck, but I must admit that it raised my suspicions.

During a break on the third week, I mentioned to the members of the Bingo staff that I was a little suspicious about the woman winning that often.

One of the members of the staff appeared to me to get a little nervous when I explained why I thought the lady was winning so often.

I explained to the staff that I was in information technology (IT) for over 40 years and would frequently connect to a

worker’s computer remotely using their Internet protocol (IP) address and would take control of that machine to work on it. (The IP identifies your specific computer/machine just like your home address.)

I have done this on computers across the states and even into Canada.

I am not saying that these Bingo machines are being controlled remotely, I am just pointing out that it is possible.

Mama, via email Hi Mama, I’m afraid I don’t quite follow your explanation. Are you saying that someone has “cracked” the IP address of this one handheld device—which the woman somehow always makes sure to get her hands on when she’s at Bingo? And that once she has it, the hacker is able to invade the digital Bingo card series, listen to the numbers the caller calls, change the cards loaded onto her handheld so that they match, and then program the console so that it verifies the woman’s winning Bingo?

Oh sure, that make a lot more sense than her just being lucky. —Guy Hi Guy, Here is one way to cheat at Bingo.

three games to a sheet, are sold separately from the regular games, and they pay the biggest prizes. At least one cheat number, e.g. B-12, I-24, N-32, G-49 or O-70, is printed on each game, except for the games reserved for the favorites, which have none of the cheat numbers.

Before the Bingo session begins, the caller may invite a couple of witnesses to verify that all 75 numbers are on the board before depositing them into the hopper. Of course, they are all there. As soon as the witnesses turn their backs, the caller picks the cheat numbers off the board and deposits the rest into the hopper.

I’ve seen it happen.

When the Specials are played, all the caller has to do is keep calling the numbers that come up from the hopper until the favorite shouts “Bingo.”

Guy, you just weren’t thinking outside the hopper.

IM, via email Hi IM, So, in this scenario, the Bingo hall has purchased and sold stacks and stacks of Specials, most of which contain select numbers that the caller is tipped off to, plus a handful that do not contain the “cheat” numbers.

The bad cards are sold to all the suckers in the hall that management hates and wants to steal from. The good cards go to insiders who also want to rip off the other players.

The caller even has some of the idiot players verify that all the balls are present, then just before releasing them into the chamber, manages— unobserved—to snatch up the designated “cheat” balls and stash them away somewhere.

The caller then goes through the motions of calling Bingo that the dummies in the hall can’t possibly win—only the handful of designated “favorites” who are also in on the scam. What fun!

Wow, that is an awful lot of work by an awful lot of criminals just so that one of them gets a $100 jackpot—which I assume everyone involved splits between them when they meet up at their lair later on. And to think, no one has ever been caught doing this!

It’s particularly interesting when you claim: “I’ve seen it happen.” So, you’ve witnessed this elaborate scam in action and just sat idly by and did nothing? No report to the gaming commission? No police?

What Would You Do? Several years ago, I appeared on a TV gambling show on which scenarios were created and players were asked “What would you do if ?” For example, what you would do if you found a $100 casino chip on the casino floor. After the players gave their response to each scenario, several gambling experts were asked what they would do. I thought it would be fun to create a couple blackjack-related scenarios for you to ponder, and then decide what you do? (Answers are at end of the article.)

1. You’ve made it to the final round of a million-dollar blackjack tournament and there are only two players left, you and tournament pro Kenneth Smith. It’s the last hand and you have a commanding lead over Ken with a $49,000 bankroll to his $20,000. There are no maximum betting limits in this tournament and the minimum bet is only $5. Surrender isn’t offered.

First place prize is a million bucks; second place wins $50,000. You are on the button (meaning, you must bet first, before Ken does), and you have 30 seconds to decide how much you are going to bet.

What would you do? Would you: (1) Go all in with a $49,000 bet (2) Make a minimum $5 bet (3) Bet at least $1,005 but no more than $8,995 2. With the million bucks you just won in the blackjack tournament by beating Ken, you decide to play in a one-day blackjack promotion at your local casino. It’s a special single-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17, blackjacks are paid at 3-2 (rather than the deplorable 6-5), and doubling down after pair splitting is not permitted. (A basic strategy player

APRIL 2020 has a very tiny two thousands of a percent edge against the casino in this game.) The maximum betting limit is $10,000. The casino also guarantees that two rounds will be dealt before the cards are shuffled. You join the game with five other players, and start firing away with $10,000 bets on each round. Luckily, you win your first six hands and are up sixty grand.

The dealer shuffles the cards, you make another $10,000 wager, and low-and-behold, you and three other table players get blackjacks.

There’s a lot of whooping and hollering going on at the table as the dealer starts paying off all the blackjacks. When the round is over, the floor supervisor comes over and announces that the betting limit is being raised to $25,000, beginning with the next round. How lucky can you get!

You’re on a hot streak and the casino is letting you increase your bet to $25,000. What would do?

Would you make a $25,000 bet in the next round? (Yes or no?)

in and wins. However, you’ll also be successful if Ken gets lucky and hits a blackjack. (According to Ken, you’ll have more than a 97% chance of winning the million if you bet at least $1,005.)

2. Increasing your bet to $25,000 in the next round isn’t a smart bet.

Why? The fact that four players got blackjacks (in the first round after the shuffle) means that all four aces were removed from the deck and on the next round, there is no possibility of getting a blackjack (and the juicy 3-2 payoff). The fact that you were on a “hot streak” is also immaterial because previous wins (or losses) have no effect on the odds of winning the next hand.

(Actually, the smartest bet you can make in the next round is the table minimum.)

Answers 1. Because there is such a large spread between the million-dollar first-place prize and the $50,000 second-place prize, it’s clear that you should do whatever it takes to wind up with more chips than Ken after the last hand is played.

What you definitely want to avoid is a swing, meaning if you lose the last hand and Ken wins his last hand he winds up with more chips than you do. Therefore, going all in and betting $49,000 would be a big mistake. If you assume that Ken will go all in and bet $20,000, he could wind up with $40,000 if he wins his last hand.

Betting the minimum $5 seems OK (even if you lost your hand, you’d wind up with $48,995, which would beat Ken’s $40,000).

However, making the minimum $5 bet is another big mistake. That’s because you haven’t covered the possibility that Ken could get lucky and get a blackjack on the last hand (a one in roughly 21 possibility). If that happens, he’d get paid $30,000 for his $20,000 bet and wind up with $50,000, which would be greater than your $49,005 (assuming you won your $5 bet).

The optimum bet to make is at least $1,005 but no more than $8,995. The reason is you will hold back more un-bet chips than Ken can attain even if he goes all

B-AND-B’s THRIVE IN VEGAS AREA A new report shows more than 882,000 home-share rentals in Clark County last year. The people who rented out their homes earned more than $138 million.

That’s up 38% over the $100 million in 2018. All this comes at the same time as a concerted crackdown on short-term rentals in unincorporated Clark County and some restrictions in the cities of Las Vegas and Henderson. According to published reports, the county has six staff members dedicated to cracking down on illegal short-term rentals. It is estimated that each year B-and-B’s drain away about $150-million from Strip properties.

ISN’T IT ROMANTIC? A report from Open Table, the world’s leading provider of online restaurant reservations, recently publishes a list of the 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America. The list is devised from more than 80-million diner reviews of more than 30,000 restaurants across all 50 states and Washington, DC. Only one on the 100-list is in Las Vegas: Sinatra at the Wynn.

IF THAT DOESN’T TAKE THE CAKE! Popular reality star Buddy Valastro–best known for Cake Boss—and owner of the Carlo’s Bakery chain says that he’s working on a cake vending machine for a future grand opening. Valastro tells media he is opening a place called PizzaCake at Harrah’s. The eatery will offer the best bakery goods along with pizza. AND, he promises that the shop will have a vending machine that will dispense his best cakes.

SUPER BOWL NUMBERS According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, the first set of figures released on the most recent Super Bowl shows that nearly $155-million was wagered in the Silver state. There are 190 sports books in the state that participated in this year’s wagering. According to the board, the organization’s chairwoman, Becky Harris, noted, “Unaudited figures show a sports book win of $18,774,148 was recorded on wagers totaling $154,679,241.”

NEON FREEWAY The people who manage traffic patterns in and around Las Vegas recently turned on a series of digital traffic signs on a busy tourist interstate, between Valley View and Las Vegas Boulevard. The signs are part of a one-billion-dollar project called the Neon Freeway. When finished, the plan is to use the signs to regulate speeds and lanes when something goes wrong.

No word yet on whether motorists understand what’s going on.

SAHARA GETS NEW POKER ROOM A brand-spanking-new poker room has opened at the Las Vegas Sahara.

According to a press release, the poker room will open daily at 10 a.m. The new room boasts seven tables, a 16-foot by nine-foot LED video wall, and five additional screens throughout the room, along with 24/7 food options provided

by Northside Café. The room offers an extensive game list, including No-Limit Texas Hold’em, Limit Hold’em and 7-Card Stud.

Nothing except they were both born in April. April is the only month with the letter I in its name and the only month where outrageous pranks are expected and tolerated on April Fool’s Day, April 1st. I admit I’m a gullible turkey. I’ve fallen for everything from rivers flowing the wrong way to fake pregnancies.

And admittedly, I’ve included a few of my own pranks in this column, all in good fun of course.

For this April column however, relax. I couldn’t think of anything to write about. April Fool! Yours truly is never at a loss for words, or so says my husband, Robert.

April showers bring flowers and our winter clothes can be discarded for shorts and t-shirts.

Warmer weather means we can play bingo often without fear of snowy roads and iced over windshields. We can take our favorite lucky charms as over seventy-five percent of us bingo players do, spread them out in front of us, and signal Lady Luck we are ready to win. One lucky charm, the rabbit’s foot, is one of the oldest charms in recorded history. Beware though of the rules attached to it because the foot must be a rabbit’s left hind foot. Plus, the poor rabbit that

loses a foot must be found in a cemetery. I think I’ll stick to horseshoes, trolls, and lucky red daubers.

Bingo players are creatures of habit. Just like in church, we claim a seat, deem it our lucky seat, and sit there week after week. Woe unto newcomers who don’t understand this unwritten rule of most bingo halls. Don’t take a regular player’s usual seat. On the other hand, how is the newcomer to know about this rule or what constitutes a saved seat? My suggestion is that regular players go early. Or have someone else buy your seat and put the receipt where you sit.

I go early, as I can’t stand running in at the last minute. I buy my computer and cards; spread out my charms; check out the snack bar; chat with my friends who are there. And sometimes if I spot a newcomer who seems unsure, I strike up a conversation and offer my help getting situated. It’s a great way to make a new friend. What’s important is that we respect the beliefs and rituals of other players, however silly they seem. My rule is that your rights end where my nose begins. In other words, if what you are doing to entice a win from the bingo caller works for you, then so be it, as long as it doesn’t affect my concentration and enjoyment of the games.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you.
