Ron Kruszka used to enjoy playing the “Slots” at the casinos, but he says, “The winnings weren’t there. So I decided to give Bingo a try. I stopped in here at the Moose Lodge #49. My father-in-law was a member of the Moose Lodge and I knew that they do good work for the community. I like playing Bingo at places like the Moose and the KC’s because the money stays in-house and they use it to do good for people.”

Yes, Ron is right. The Moose Lodge #49 at 5476 S. 13th Street (The corner of S. 13th and W. Grange Ave.) is a great place to play Bingo. They play every Sunday. They feature All Paper Sheets, Progressive Bingo, TV Monitors and ample parking as well as being Handicap Accessible. The Moose Lodge even provides FREE COFFEE for their Bingo Players. Sales begin at 11:30 AM with the first session starting at 12:30 PM, second session to follow.

When we visited the Moose Lodge #49 to talk with our Sweepstakes Winner we were lucky to run into Walter J. Kohnke who told us he is a Bingo Volunteer at the Moose and also a Past Prelate at the Lodge, a member since 2010. He told us that they run a Raffle during the 1st and 2nd Session of Bingo and that the Bingo Hall is Open to the Public.

The bottom line is Moose Lodge #49 is a worthwhile place to play Bingo for a multitude of reasons. They will keep you happy as a Bingo Player while doing good work for the community. You won’t go hungry playing Bingo there because they operate a full snack bar with fresh cooked food.

on the table. Afterward, my friend turned to me and said, “Do you believe that? And I saw almost the exact same thing happen just he other day at a restaurant. It’s a little scary.”

You would like to think that Bingo is a place to go to have fun and get away from all the upsets of the day. Now it’s getting to be another place where angry people yell at each other. Isn’t there anyplace left where folks will keep their opinions to themselves?

Toxic Politics Poison Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo: Like most Americans, I understand that politics right now is very “divisive” (a word I had never heard until our most recent presidential election, and one that I think I hear every day now.)

In some ways I think it is a good thing because it is making people, including myself, really think about what they want this country to be and what kind of national leaders they feel should be representing us. But there has been a real down side to how angry so many people seem to be when it comes to politics and political opinion.

Although I am not particularly politically active, I come from a family that has been for generations.

Dinner table conversations—especially during the holidays when family members came from far and wide to be together—were particularly lively when it came to the political issues of the day. It could get quite loud, but it was never nasty; everybody had a chance to state their beliefs and challenge one another on those beliefs. I doubted any minds were ever changed, but at least people listened, and I’m confident we were better citizens for it.

This current atmosphere of anger and intolerance really troubles me, especially because it has all gotten so divisive (there’s that word again) and public. Now it’s even snuck into our Bingo halls.

Just tonight there was a big row at the start of Bingo after a woman who apparently complained to a Bingo buddy about some politician she hoped would be voted out, was overheard by another player at another table. That player basically called the woman ignorant and said she should keep quiet. The first woman got angry and replied with a few colorful words of her own. From that, the argument escalated until the two were standing facing each other and basically screaming insults.

In the middle of a Bingo hall! On a Sunday!!

This went on for several minutes until the two were interrupted by the caller who told them to stop at once or they’d be thrown out.

It worked, but the tension in the hall lingered for the rest of the afternoon.

And this was not an isolated occurrence. Just days earlier I was at a different Bingo when two “players” had words over some social issue that had both shouting and one pounding his open hand

Dear Barbara: No one needs me to tell them that political discourse has turned toxic—across the political spectrum. Rage seems to be the great motivator these days, and we have only ourselves to blame by following along blindly while the people in charge point fingers and tell us whom to hate.

These feuds have gotten incredibly public, with people screaming at each other on sidewalks, in restaurants, at traffic stops and, as you point out, even in Bingo halls. I’m just waiting for the first fistfight to break out at Sunday services. It’s only a matter of time.

In the meantime, I think Bingo hall managers need to update their hall policies, stating, “There Shall Be No Political Debates on the Premises.” Once a few of these people are evicted, you can be sure there will be a marked change in behavior. —Aunt Bingo Share your views! As Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) prepares to reopen her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) renovated boutique hotel, we time-travel back to 1979, when Donna (played in flashback by Lily James) graduated Oxford and swags through Europe, romancing three lovely suitors along the way — one of whom is Sophie’s dad. If you were charmed by the original, you’ll love this follow-up, which includes all of the original cast plus young versions, too.

And then things get crazy. The film marries subversively thoughtprovoking issues with bellyaching

High Demand vacations are just that, and come with a higher price, but they’re still discounted for veterans. The available dates might not be specifically at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but trips to Florida, Texas, and Williamsburg, Virginia can be enjoyable anytime, especially if you want warmer weather for the golf, tennis and hiking.

I AM VENGEANCE (R) — Stu Bennett, perhaps better known as the WWE’s Wade Barrett, headlines this muddled British military mystery/action flick as John Gold. After learning that his best friend and his family were murdered, Gold heads on down to his home town of Devotion to unmask the perpetrator. It’s like the director took a deck of cards, each card labeled with a genre trope — Special Forces hero, bad guy in a well-defended compound, war profiteers who get their comeuppance — and drew as many cards as he needed to complete this movie. It rings so many bells that you can’t enjoy it for all the noise. Despite that, Vengeance 2 is filming as we speak.

PATIENT ZERO (R) — It’s the zombie apocalypse you’ve been warned about: a supervirus that changes poor, tragic humans into aggressive, highly intelligent, voracious killers. A group of untainted people live underground in a nuclear silo, their scientists searching for patient zero, whom they need in order to reverseengineer a cure that will make the world safe again. The searchers are headed up by Dr. Rose (Natalie Dormer) and Morgan (Matt Smith), who was bitten but not zombiefied — so, he can communicate with the infectious ragers. When an infected professor (Stanley Tucci) is brought in for interrogation, he posits the theory that this is cleansing evolution, not regression.

Christmas Party Bingo Our small town has a decorating contest for Christmas. You must register your house to enter the contest, which means the front of your house and yard will compete for a free Christmas d i n n e r provided by our local grocer.

We drove around looking at all the contestants and one gave me a terrific idea for our usual holiday party. It was a huge Bingo card spelled out in lights on the front yard. I decided that we should have a Bingo party and give parts of Christmas dinner as prizes.

I cut out pictures of a turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, dressing—well, you get the idea.

I made arrangements with the grocer to have dinner parts wrapped and ready for delivery to

We usually have ten people at our holiday party, but this year added a new couple we had just met and who were Bingo fans also.

Everybody brought little house gifts, which was also a tradition.

I love the new salt and pepper shakers in the shape of Bingo players.

After unwrapping the house gifts we swung right into Bingo and our guests loved the idea of winning parts of dinner. Our first winner was the female half of our new couple, Deanna, and she won a box of dressing.

“We may not have anything else,” she said, laughing. “I’m a terrible cook.”

We laughed our way through the evening until we came to the final game, the prize of which was a turkey, cooked to perfection.

To everyone’s delight, the turkey was won by Dwayne, Deanna’s husband. “ N o w you can have a real dinner,” said Kate.

“You can make a salad, can’t you?”

“Or you could come to our house,” said Jo Ann. “I’m a pretty good cook.”

“Or you could come to us,” said Miriam. “We’d love to have you.”

Deanna’s eyes filled with tears.

“Oh,” she said. “I feel so welcome.

Thank you all so much. We’ll work out the details of all your kind invitations.”

It turned out to be paper Bingo cards—a lot of them. Plus another box which contained markers—a lot of them.

“Ooooh, how great,” said Kate while I just looked on in wonder.

“I keep driving by this place that sells Bingo supplies, so we put our heads together and decided you deserved some help with your parties.”

“This is just marvelous,” I said.

“It will make our parties so much easier.”

“And our Christmas merry and bright,” added Kate.

Holiday Memories Bring Smiles I have reached that stage in life where I find it relaxing to sit back and smile as I remember my childhood and our little family customs.

With eight children, there was a birthday to celebrate every month or two and for a Mom during the great depression it was hard to bake a good cake without eggs and butter, but Mom made do with the white oleo and a bag of flour from the welfare. It wasn’t the greatest cake, but that was okay with us.

It was the candles burning on top and the whole clan singing Happy Birthday to You that made our celebrations special. Mom knew that and she always kept plenty of birthday candles on hand.

When Christmas rolled around each year we wondered where the little boxes of hard candy came from. There was a string handle on

DECEMBER 2018 the box and we carried it around with us long after the candy was gone. We had no radio or television then to build up the false hopes of receiving toys at Christmas, so what we didn’t know didn’t hurt us. Mom had us draw pictures for each other and for the Baby Jesus to wish Him a Happy Birthday. Of course we had a cake for Him with candles on it to celebrate. Before the season was over Dad picked up a tree at someone’s curbside and hauled it home.

Mom had married at 16 and by the time she was twenty she had five babies, ages three, two, one, and newborn twins. As the oldest I was Mom’s little helper. By the time the last three babies were born I had become a little mama and was very proud of my status. It was when Mom started confiding in me a little that I came to realize that we were poor. I noticed how Mom and a neighbor often loaned a dollar to each other so each of them had a chance to go to “BEANO” once in a while. The church had ten games of cover-all for ten cents a game and the prize was always a bushel basket of food. I guess that would be the beginning of Bingo as we know it today.

Over the years, life changed for Mom. Those eight children grew up. She got better and better at Bingo and baking cakes and we always got one. And we taught our kids and grand kids to celebrate the birthday of the Baby Jesus on December 25, even if we were poor.

I wish each of my readers a happy, holy Christmas, filled with peace and love.

Bingo is a Great Christmas Present As you know, I am worried that in some areas Bingo is dying. In many ways, that is why it is no longer fun. Going to some Bingo halls is like going to a funeral. I still don’t know what the answer is.

As I mentioned some time ago, the people who manage and work at large Bingo parlors are often hamstrung by rules and regulations that make it tough to have fun anymore.

An increasing number of halls now have fully automatic machines that pick a ball, bring it up, put it on camera and display the number on the tote board. The poor caller is limited to simply stating what the number is. I wonder if there are any places where the caller is a synthetic voice?

A lot of us will be going home for the holidays; others of us will have company come to visit. I have a suggestion. When the company comes in from out of town, take them to Bingo. And, if you are going out of town, find out on the Internet if there is Bingo in the city you are visiting. While you are there, take your hosts to Bingo in their own city.

It is our duty, as lovers of Bingo, to make sure that Bingo survives.

In large halls where Bingo is as dull as a library, the point of no return may have been passed.

When the game gets boring, fewer and fewer go; some large halls are closing down.

But, in many cities, Bingo is still surviving. However, it could die there. It is our job to make sure that Bingo—from Roswell, New Mexico, to Washington, Indiana and Key West, Florida—survives.

Remember my old saying: “You don’t play Bingo to win.

You play Bingo to have f u n … t o be able to be among friends, to yell at them and call them names and joke about the game.” Yes, Bingo has come a long way since it was called BEANO and was played in carnivals, first in Europe, then in the US. Remember, it was only in the 1930s that Bingo, as we know it today, was first organized.

So, Bingo IS our Christmas present. It is a present that lasts all year. Make yourself a resolution that you are going to play more often and take friends along.

Remember, it only takes one card to win. But, if we don’t all decide to support our favorite game, it might not be around much longer in some areas.

Loud and Proud Hi Guy, I need to complain. If the rules say that you won’t get paid if you don’t yell loud enough to be heard, then you shouldn’t be paid.

This player couldn’t be heard on a Bingo and others yelled Bingo for her. The announcer had said at the start of the game that we should yell loudly and not act like a church mouse when we Bingo. Rules are rules. Either follow them or don’t make announcements like that before the game. We all need to hear them yell it, not just the caller or the people sitting right next to her.

We continued to play on, then they stopped the game and paid the church mouse. We were not happy. It’s plain and simple. Follow the rules that you say before the start of the game.

Not a Church Mouse in Indianapolis Hi Not a Church Mouse, I’m with you 100 percent on this one. Few things bug me more than being in a Bingo hall that claims to have rules and either doesn’t enforce them or enforces them intermittently, making it seem like

the rules only apply to some.

Your story is particularly interesting because you say the caller stated this rule at the start of the game. It’s not like it was a policy printed on a sheet of paper and pasted to the wall in some obscure spot. If that was the case, the church mouse could have claimed that she was unaware of the rule. But as a public announcement made minutes before the infraction? I see no excuse.

I’m curious why players just went along with it. Didn’t anyone object or call for the manager to voice a complaint? If not, then the caller may have assumed no one minded and did what he decided was the right thing to do.

To me it’s like someone jaywalking and almost causing a car accident while a police officer looks on. If the officer does nothing, then there is no ticket issued and no crime. But if someone points it out to the officer and says it was illegal and dangerous, it’s likely the officer will enforce the law and punish the jaywalker. —Guy Hi Guy, No joke…we had a woman show up to Bingo who brought a ferret with her. She was told that animals weren’t permitted in the hall, and she said it was an emotional care pet and she had a letter from a doctor that said it was a requirement for her health.

The hall staff debated for a few minutes and finally said it was OK but that if the animal was disruptive she would have to leave.

She agreed, the animal stayed in her lap all night (it was on a leash

and there was also a carrier box) and there weren’t any problems.

We actually found the whole thing pretty entertaining.

Mike G., California Hi Mike, The actual term is Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) which make the news mostly when a person shows up at an airport with an unusual animal like a bird, pig or some-such.

People who qualify for ESAs have verifiable psychological disabilities that substantially interfere with major life activities such as anxiety, depression or panic attacks. They are protected

by U.S. disability law so long as they can provide documentation of the disability and need for the ESA. My understanding, however, is that ESAs must be a “usual” animal type, like a dog or cat, at least for exemptions like housing and transportation regulations, and would not include animals like reptiles and rodents.

It was certainly kind, though may not necessarily have been legally required, for hall staff to permit the ferret in. What do the “suits” do?

I received an interesting question from a blackjack player who wanted to know “what do all those people in suits do that work in the pit?”

Most of the time a blackjack player interacts with only one casino employee, namely the dealer, whose job is to ensure that the game is run by established procedures, and to provide customers with a pleasant gaming experience. And for the most part, blackjack dealers work hard and do a good job. But what about those folks who are standing behind the dealer in an area known as the “pit.” I’ll explain what they do, and how they help make your playing experience a pleasant one.

Dealers report to floor persons, who are supervisors responsible for the operation of a group of tables within the pit. The number of tables that they supervisor varies depending upon the policy of each casino (I’ve seen a floor person supervise up to eight blackjack tables in the main pit, and as few as only one table in a high roller pit). The main responsibilities of the floor person are to ensure that each dealer is in compliance with house rules, government regulations, and game protection (i.e., cheating); to intervene and be the final arbiter if a dealer makes a mistake in either dealing cards or paying a winning wager; to be sure a table doesn’t run out of chips; to do the table accounting (count chips); and to rate players.

A floor person can be your ally when it comes to receiving comps.

When you first sit down to play blackjack, you should place your Player’s Card in front of you.

The dealer will either input your information into the casino’s player tracking system or set the

DECEMBER 2018 card aside for the floor person to do so. The floor person will usually record the amount of your buy-in, and then periodically record how much they see you wager. When you are done playing, you should get the floor person’s attention and ask politely if you can have a comp (for the buffet, or restaurant, or show theater, etc.). Nowadays most casinos have strict rules that determine how much a floor person can give a player in comps (usually the computer will calculate the amount based on your average wager, and duration of play).

However, in many casinos, floor persons can still give discretionary comps to players. Just remember that a floor person usually will not give you a comp unless you ask for one…and when you do so, ask nicely.

If you establish a good rapport with a floor person who treats you well (i.e., rates your play liberally), ask for their business card and then reward them with a token of appreciation on their birthday or at Christmas. It’s the policy in most casinos that floor persons cannot accept cash from players, but they can accept gifts (as long as they are nominal, usually $100 or less). Here are some suggestions on gifts: if your floor person is a golfer, a set of golf balls or gift certificate for a round of golf; a gift certificate to a local restaurant; or a gift certificate to a local spa. I think you get the picture.

Next up in the chain of command is the Pit Manager (sometimes called the Pit Boss). This manager is responsible for overseeing the operation of all the table games in a specific pit. He or she supervises the floor persons and the dealers in the pit. Their main responsibilities include supervising the floor persons and dealers to achieve an efficient operation. If a particular table hasn’t won what it should, upper level managers expect an answer from the Pit Boss.

Nowadays, the responsibility of a Pit Boss has been expanded to include spending more time with players (customer relations) to ensure that they are having a good time (i.e., to be less of a policeman and more like a goodwill ambassador).

Pit Bosses report to Shift Managers, who are responsible for the overall operation of all the table games and personnel during a particular shift. Pit Bosses also report to the Casino Manager or V.P. of Casino Operations (who has the all responsibility for the table games and slots).

operations are the surveillance employees. These folks monitor and record the activity that goes on at each table to be sure that proper procedures are being followed, that all employees are in compliance with gaming regulations, and they watch for any suspicious activity (i.e. cheating by either a player or dealer or both).

I hope I’ve given you a clear overview of the hierarchy of the “suits” that manage the table games in casinos. If you ever have an issue with any casino employee, I suggest that you take your complaint directly to the Casino Manager or V.P. of Casino Operations (you can call the casino to get their name, phone number, and email address).

What's News in Nevada . . .

BIG ‘WIN’ FOR CELINE DION Las Vegas number crunchers say that Celine Dion’s appearances in that city have totaled more than the revenues taken in by the blockbuster movie, Titanic. Dion has appeared at two Vegas venues and garnered over $700-million in ticket sales. Compare that to the just under $600-million taken in on Titanic ticket sales. By the way, her rendition of the movie’s big song, My Heart Will Go On, has sold more than 18-million copies.

WEST WENDOVER REMEMBERS The history of gaming in West Wendover, Nevada, is actually a short one. Gaming halls in the area are remembering that it only goes back to the legalization of gambling in Nevada in the early 1930s. At that time, a lone gas station just inside Nevada from the border with Utah was the “only game in town.”

The expansion of the air base in Wendover, Utah, was a big shot in the arm. Meanwhile, revenues at a variety of Wendover (Nevada) casinos continue to rise.

RENO’S RANCHARRAH Area-known chef Colin Smith, one of the owners of the Roundabout Grill at the Whitney Peak Hotel in Reno, has been named the new consulting chef and food and beverage director of the Club at Rancharrah. That complex is a master-planned community, boasting more than 140 acres, being built on the south side of Reno. The facility is in the 30-thousand square foot former Harrah Mansion. It is set to open sometime next year.

GOLDEN INKS DEAL The company Golden Entertainment says it has entered into a long-term agreement with the William Hill Company. Hill is the biggest bookmaker in America.

Hill already operates the race and sports book at the Nugget Hotel and Gambling Hall in Pahrump. Hill and Golden are already involved in contracts at The Stratosphere and both Arizona Charlie’s locations in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS BUFFET RE-OPENS It used to be called the Dishes Buffet at the Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas. Now, it’s been renovated and has re-opened as the Corner Market Buffet. The re-launch of the eatery was several months late, according to media reports. The eating area has been greatly expanded; it now boasts about 13-thousand square feet of space. The menu has also been expanded.

MGM LOSES LAWSUIT BID Court records show that a U.S. judicial panel has turned down MGM Resorts’ attempt to combine separate lawsuits in court; these stem from last year’s mass shooting. MGM wants to combine the court actions into one federal proceeding. Their case, according to published reports, was based on the possibility of thousands of lawsuits being filed by victims and their families. The panel said that only 38 suits for negligence have been filed, 34 of which have been voluntarily dismissed.

Why is National Bingo Month in December? Probably because Edwin Lowe discovered Beano in December 1929. He renamed it Bingo and started a national craze that continues to this day. Another entrepreneur, though, who also deserves credit for spreading the popularity of bingo is Roger Snowden, founder of Bingo Bugle.

Mr. Snowden saw a marketing opportunity for churches, Native Americans, and commercial venues to increase their bingo player bases. Subsequently, the first edition of the Bugle was published in 1980 in the Tacoma, Washington area. Today his foresight has led to Bingo Bugle being produced and printed in over 50 markets throughout the U.S. and Canada with a readership of over 1.5 million. It is North America’s leading bingo and gaming publication and I am proud to be one of their columnists.

Recently, I read an article that said to improve your chances of winning at bingo you should play more cards at bingo halls where there are fewer people.

Well, duh; not exactly earthshattering information. Who can’t figure that out if you think about it…less competition plus more opportunities equals a greater likelihood that you will get to holler

bingo. That is, unless you happen to be a consistent loser girl as I am. Recently Robert and I were in Vegas along with our longtime friends, Arnold and Donna. Now Arnold is a lucky duck and wins quite often wherever he goes and Donna wins her share also. But, lo and behold, and much to my elated surprise, I got to holler bingo not once but twice. Thank you, Laughlin Tropicana Bingo and Lady Luck since those were my first wins in almost a year. It wasn’t a lot, but what the heck, it felt so good for a change to walk out of there with more money than I invested.

And now, since two bingo wins equals a winning streak for me, I think I’ll invest in a few lottery tickets. I’m going to try this strategy (www.quora.com/ Hans Adh) to choose winning Pick 3 numbers. Use a calculator and enter the last winning draw numbers, then add 21. Continue adding 21 to generate new 3-digit sets until you have spent your allotted amount per draw. Play these numbers for 7 days. This system increases the odds of winning, or so I read, because this method is mathematically based.

Since math is not my strong point, I won’t even try to figure out why this is so. I would end up with headache and still be clueless.

In the meantime, I hope you and yours enjoy a blessed holiday season with family and friends.

The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you.
