The effect of wind on cropsUntitled Article

The wind is invisible and untouchable in our lives, yet it is present all the time. We can always feel the wind in our daily lives, but do you know how it affects agriculture?

1. The beneficial effects of wind on agriculture

The wind keeps the air in the fields constantly updated and regulates the microclimate of the farmland, which not only helps to disperse and spread crop pollen, but also attracts insects to pollinate, increasing the fruit set and improving yields.

2. Adverse effects of wind on agriculture

The direct adverse effects of wind on agriculture are mainly mechanical damage to plants and physiological hazards, soil erosion and sanding, and the disruption of agricultural activities and damage to agricultural production facilities.

3. Wind protection measures

(1) Select wind-resistant crops and varieties: for crops, generally short, stout, thick internodes, not easy to drop grain cereal crops than tall, weak, easy to drop grain crops or varieties of wind resistance is stronger.

(2) Improve cultivation practices: moderately deep ploughing deepens the active layer of the root system and helps to support the above-ground part of the plant. Cultivating the soil lowers the centre of gravity of the plant and strengthens the soil at the roots to enhance wind resistance. Reasonably dense planting ensures that the plants lean on each other, which is conducive to wind resistance.

(3) Strengthen weather monitoring: choose precise instruments such as weather stations and wind sensors to achieve accurate monitoring and forecasting and early warning services for catastrophic weather, so as to buy time for defending against wind damage and formulating emergency plans.
