|1| Dear Friends, As we look back on the 2025 season, we are filled with gratitude for our community that continues to make the Bowdoin International Music Festival a place of inspiration, discovery, and artistic excellence. Each summer, music emanates from student residences and faculty studios along the quad, audiences gather in Studzinski Hall, and we experience the shared joy of hearing extraordinary performances together.

This season brought unforgettable artistry from renowned pianist Richard Goode and the Takács Quartet, thrilling Festival debuts by the Attacca Quartet and Simone Porter, and captivating collaborations between our artist-faculty. Our students — 274 from 16 countries and 40 states — brought remarkable talent, curiosity, and passion to their study, performing in 45 concerts across Brunswick and Midcoast Maine.

Our mission to nurture the next generation of musicians while enriching the cultural life of our community has never felt more vital. Thank you for your dedicated support and partnership.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Collaborative Spotlight One of our favorite annual collaborations is with the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. In addition to hosting several Music at the Museum concerts in the Bowdoin Gallery each summer, the Museum partners with our Composition Program on its signature project: tasking students with creating new pieces inspired by works from the Museum’s collection. At the start of each Festival, Museum Co-Directors Anne and Frank Goodyear lead a private tour for the student composers and Festival composers-in-residence Derek Bermel and Andreia Pinto Correia. Each student then selects a work of art, composes a piece in response, and rehearses with Festival instrumentalists. The project culminates in a public Museum tour highlighting the selected artworks, followed by a concert in Studzinski Hall premiering the nine new compositions.

This year, artist Ann Craven — whose exhibition Painted Time: Moons (Laboratory) inspired several student works — joined both the tour and concert. After hearing Rory Bricca’s Temporal Paint (Four Moons), Xinzhi Guo’s The Resonance of Anxiety and Uncertainty, and Xingyue Song’s Chasing the Moon, Craven took the stage to share her reflections:

“I am blown away. I can’t believe what I’ve just experienced here — listening to your minds, your ideas, your head, your eyes, your brain, your hands, and heart.

When I’m out painting under the night sky in silence, I just hear the night. After the music I heard tonight, I will never be the same.

It’s so inspiring to be here, and I can’t thank you enough.”

We are grateful to Ann Craven for her moving words, to the Bowdoin College Museum of Art for its continued partnership, and to our composition students for their creativity and commitment. Together, they remind us of the profound exchange that arises when one form of art gives life to another.
