2024 Annual Report

A Celebratory Season

On a picture-perfect, mid-July afternoon this past summer, we gathered on the Brunswick green with 650 of our closest friends to celebrate the 60th anniversary of our Festival. The party included cupcakes and gelato, and of course, music performed exquisitely and exuberantly by our students. It was a fitting event to recognize the decades of engagement of the Brunswick and Midcoast Maine communities, the hospitality of our Bowdoin College hosts, and the sustaining commitment of our audiences and patrons.

Throughout the season, we presented soloists Alexi Kenney and Sergei Babayan in performance with our students, featured the Brentano, Jupiter, Miró, Pacifica, Turtle Island, and Ying Quartets in our Monday evening ensemble series, hosted masterclasses given by Roberto Díaz, Anne Epperson, Miriam Fried, Paul Katz, Jon Nakamatsu, and our visiting ensembles, and welcomed Tania León, Dai Fujikura, and six alumni composers to campus. Audience attendance was strong, with ten sold-out subscription concerts and record engagement at our Young Artist and Community Concerts Series, both of which featured our extraordinarily talented students.

The swell of positive energy around our 60th anniversary has been a time for reflection and an opportunity to appreciate everyone who has brought us to this point. Our forward momentum and optimism for the future is reflected in our application numbers hitting an all-time high this year. We see this as a sign that young people are still falling in love with music, and the Festival continues to be a place of high-level and life-changing musical study. Thank you for being an integral part of our past and future.

Concerts & Audiences

Thank you for joining us in Studzinski Recital Hall, Crooker Theater, and at Community Concerts throughout the Midcoast. The connection and dialogue between performers and listeners is an essential part of live performances. One of this year’s Fellowship students said it best: “The audiences at Bowdoin might be my

favorite audiences ever. They have loyalty, excitement, engagement, and readiness to hear any kind of music from Beethoven to a student composer. That’s really exciting for us. I think we all wish that we could bring an audience like this back to wherever we go during the rest of the year.”

It was a privilege to attend such stellar concerts. Access to exquisite classical music was an enormous treat that we highly appreciated and prized.”

Young Artists

We aim to provide both a rigorous and supportive musical experience for our students that fosters growth, collaboration, and reflection. It’s gratifying when these sentiments are expressed by our Young Artists. One pianist shared: “I was fortunate to have a wonderful roommate who was interesting, thoughtful, and genuinely

kind. We spent three weeks exchanging ideas, having deep conversations, and reflecting together.” A violinist wrote: “I made such good connections with many other students — friendships that are going to last for a very long time. I felt very comfortable talking

about my weak points and got a lot of honesty and support from my new friends.” And a composer noted: “The personal growth is incredible. I built confidence and resilience. My composition work matured, and I learned what I was capable of.”

Artists & Teaching

Our faculty and artists are the heart of the Festival and we are immensely grateful for their dedication to outstanding performance and teaching. One student described their experience:

“My classes with my private teacher were outstanding. I really appreciated how clearly he explained everything and how his advice could instantly solve any difficulties I was having with a specific passage. We also exchanged ideas, which made our lessons even more engaging. Listening to his insights was always interesting and thought-provoking. Moreover, his tone was always encouraging, and his playing was truly magnificent and deeply inspiring.”

ALUMNI RETURN

It was an honor to welcome talented alumni back to Brunswick to inspire our audiences and work with our students.

Alumni in our guest ensembles included violinist Serena Canin of the Brentano Quartet, violinist Simin Ganatra and cellist Brandon Vamos of the Pacifica Quartet, and Daniel Ching and William Fedkenheuer of the Miró Quartet. Each quartet gave a masterclass in addition to their performance.

Our Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music featured works by Festival alumni composers, six of whom returned to campus to discuss their works and give presentations to this year’s cohort of composition students. In the bottom right photos, alumni Melissa Hui, Michael Fiday, Nina Shekhar, Tyler Taylor, Sid Richardson, and Mandy Fang chat with composer-in-residence Derek Bermel (also a Festival alum!) in a series of pre-concert talks.

60th Birthday Party

We were absolutely blown away by the attendance at our 60th Birthday Party on the Brunswick Mall. Thank you for being part of this celebratory day. Community members, faculty, and students took in the lively wind music selections, Brandenburg Concerto, and Bach Double; the Gelato Fiasco line was unwaveringly popular while Wild Oats cupcakes were devoured; and kids and adults alike had the thrill of trying out instruments at the musical petting zoo. It was exciting to see the seeds of inspiration planted for the next generation of musicians. One community parent shared: “Introducing kids to musical instruments at the event on the Brunswick mall was a highlight. My 5-year-old loved seeing new instruments and inspired us to sign him up for piano lessons!”

Our thanks to Frost Gully Violins for providing the string demo instruments, Festival students for performing and leading the instrument petting zoo, and our summer staff, trustees, and the town of Brunswick for their help and support producing this special event.

Strategic Plan 2023–2028

In 2023, on the eve of the Bowdoin International Music Festival’s 60th anniversary, trustees and staff set out to renew the organization’s five-year strategic plan. Our process began by evaluating the former strategic plan adopted in 2018. Despite the challenges presented by the COVID pandemic, we made considerable progress towards several of our goals, setting organizational records for student applications, ticket revenue, and contributed income. However, during this same period, increases in operating expenses and housing costs significantly offset the effect of growth in donations, scholarships, and faculty support.

We then gathered feedback from students, faculty, audiences, trustees, supporters, staff, and community partners. The responses overwhelmingly highlighted our strong present position; 100% of survey respondents said they were satisfied with the organization’s direction. This feedback reinforced our confidence in the core components of our programs, such as our educational approach, student-to-faculty ratio, and concert programming. After combining public input with internal data analysis and a peer comparison study, we identified three strategic opportunities to better serve our mission and pursue our vision.

Strategic Opportunities

& Your Participation

Ensure that all admitted students regardless of financial need can enroll in the Festival

The Festival is considered by many to be one of the most desirable educational opportunities for students of classical music. However, many highly qualified applicants do not receive the scholarship awards they need to enroll. This funding gap diminishes our ability to sustain and improve the standards of our student body, especially when other festivals provide greater scholarships to the same students. In addition, our inability to enroll all the most qualified applicants imperils the diversity of our students, success of our educational programs, caliber of our faculty, and quality of public performances. More scholarships are critical to sustaining our artistic excellence, creating an inclusive community, and affirming our belief that a lack of funding should not prevent young musicians from pursuing their artistic aspirations at our Festival.

Make a gift to the scholarship fund or sponsor a student.

Retain and recruit exceptional faculty

Faculty are at the heart of our organization. Their reputation and ability drive student applications and audience attendance. Currently, many of our faculty live in rentals where costs often exceed their housing stipend. Despite this, faculty return to the Festival year after year for the supportive culture and inspiring environment generated by the Festival and Maine. We must match the faculty’s extremely high quality and commitment with commensurate compensation.

Make a gift in support of faculty or offer free or discounted local housing.

Increase our audience

Audiences are necessary for live music; their participation creates the community, sense of purpose, and critical funding that nurtures great art. Audiences have fueled our growth for 60 years, and continuing audience growth is critical to maximizing our donor support and mission to provide music to the community.

Attend concerts, bring friends to events, get involved as a volunteer.

A Musical Legacy

This year, the Festival received a $3.7 million bequest from Patricia Crawford Brown, an ardent supporter and Trustee. This gift marks the largest in the Festival’s 60-year history and has established a fund to support student scholarship — a cause Pat cherished and championed throughout her involvement with the Festival. The earnings from this endowed fund will enhance the annual scholarship budget and increase accessibility for students.

Pat chose to make arts education her legacy, building opportunities for future generations of young musicians. Her steadfast belief that everyone deserves a quality education, regardless of finances, inspires us all.

Bequests like Pat’s provide a meaningful way to create a lasting impact and ensure a vibrant future for both the Festival and classical music. We are deeply grateful for Pat’s generosity and passion, and for the powerful example she set. Her legacy will resonate in the lives of countless musicians to come.

Thank You for Your Support!
