2023 Annual Report

Celebrating 60 Years IN SUMMER 2024 As we approach a milestone year for our Festival, we take this opportunity to reflect on the past and look ahead to the future. Our first 60 years have seen wonderful growth for the Festival. Nineteen students attended in that first summer of 1965 and now we enroll 275 students annually. This past season we reached 32,500 audience members through our subscription series, community concerts, other performance events, and online streaming. As an organization driven by our mission, even more important to us than numbers is the individual musical growth made possible by our 60 year history. In total, more than 7,000 students from around the world have attended the Festival to work with our world-class faculty and to have their lives transformed by the power and the gift of music. We can now boast of generations of young musicians as we regularly welcome participants who are students or even children of alumni! At the same time, it has been a privilege to share our love of chamber music and build audiences throughout our greater community of Midcoast and Southern Maine. We look ahead with excitement as we stay true to our mission and set goals and vision for the years to come. We are embarking on a new five-year strategic plan to ensure that we have the resources for our students, faculty, and audiences to thrive and flourish. We hope you will join us now and into the future as we celebrate the continued opportunity for the Bowdoin International Music Festival to play a pivotal role in the lives of all our talented young musicians.

“ I loved my chamber group dearly and I have never had

more fun in a performance ever. The memories I have made at this festival are among my most treasured. It was a beautiful experience.”

Honoring Pat Brown Pat Brown was the 2023 Scholarship Gala’s honoree in recognition of her dedication to the Festival and support of student scholarship. “Seldom does one find a person as dedicated to education and the arts as Pat Brown. Pat has continually given her time, talent, and treasure to the Festival and its students. As founder of the annual Gala, a regular student scholarship sponsor, a board member since 2008, an Encore Society member, and one who never misses a performance during each six-week season, Pat’s influence on, and presence at, the Festival is ubiquitous. Pat has done more to support the student scholarship program at the Festival than many of us realize. As part of her dogged determination to create and develop this Gala, our scholarship program now provides financial aid to 70% of enrolled students. We and all of “her students” are grateful to Pat for her quiet, focused devotion to the Festival, thus enabling so many talented musical scholars to study here. Bravo, collective huzzahs, and our heartfelt gratitude to you, Pat.” — Margy Burroughs, former Festival trustee

“ The Tchaikovsky

Piano Concerto was unbelievable! Joyce Yang is an artist of the first order.” Guest artist Joyce Yang playing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 alongside conductor Jayce Ogren and the Festival Orchestra was an inspiring and fitting finale to our season! Joyce is a Festival alum and attended for five summers, from 1998 to 2002. Before her encore, Joyce spoke to the audience: “It has been a joy and an honor to return to Bowdoin as a guest artist after spending so many summers here as a student. It is such a special moment.”

Family Series “ My season highlight —

bringing my 4.5-year-old son to the Family Day concert. Just the other day he asked if we could go listen to the classical music again.”

It was so much fun to welcome kids to our first series of dedicated Family Concerts. These performances were held on Saturday mornings at Curtis Memorial Library, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Studzinski Recital Hall, and the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine. At Curtis Library, kids responded to prompts such as “what animal did that piece sound like?” Of the many entertaining responses, one child demonstrated her Maine roots by exclaiming “like a moose arguing with a turtle!” At Studzinski, kids got to see up-close demonstrations of a variety of percussion instruments at the end of the concert.
